  1. Introduction
====================

So, I was on my way to unlocking Keiji Maeda when I came across this warrior and
strategist named Kanetsugu Naoe. To write about him was not among my plans, but
alas, he caught my attention and made me like him enough to dedicate this FAQ to
him. Those who have played Dynasty Warriors 5 will find his moveset similar to
that of Zuo Ci (though not as powerful), and it is, in a way, but there is more
to Kanetsugu than just that. In fact, although he is not immensely powerful like
Tadakatsu Honda or Keiji Maeda, he is much fun to play, and at high levels he is
capable of performing rather impressive combos. Not to mention that he has a
great personality and an unusual sense of honor that I find very appealing. But
enough of that.

This FAQ intends to cover the most important aspects of gameplay as Kanetsugu
Naoe in Samurai Warriors 2. Since there is no official strategy guide for the
American version of the game, the majority of the information provided here is
based on my own experience, so bear with me. As usual, thanks to EChang for his
Fourth Weapons Guide, which I used as an aid for the corresponding section of my
FAQ.

  2. About Kanetsugu Naoe
===========================

Kanetsugu Naoe (1560-1619), son of Higuchi Soemon Kanetoyo, was a notable
retainer of the japanese clan of Uesugi following the Sengoku period to the Edo
period of the 17th century of Japan. He served Uesugi Kagekatsu and was largely
responsible for the Uesugi manuevers against Tokugawa's allies in the north. He
captured Hataya Castle, but suffered defeat at Hasedo Castle. After the Uesugi
were transferred to Yonezawa in 1601, Kanetsugu received an income of 60,000
koku, shortly before he retired.

  4. Kanetsugu's Tale
=======================

This section is dedicated to a detailed explanation of Kanetsugu's Tale, stage
by stage. For the sake of making the guide as helpful as possible, I have
included a walkthrough for each battle; however, walkthroughs are based solely
on my experience and are by no means the only way to get things done. The
proposed strategies have been deviced in Hard difficulty setting.


4.1 Battle of Kawanakajima

     Kenshin Uesugi and Shingen Takeda were two of the strongest lords during
     Japan's feudal era. Bitter enemies, the two had fought each other three
     times but were still unable to determine who was superior. In the year
     1561, they brought their armies to the fields of Kawanakajima.

     A young warrior named Kanetsugu Naoe, who was fond of Kenshin's tactics
     and code of honor, came to join the Uesugi Army...

Defeat Condition: Kenshin is defeated, or Main Camp is captured.

Walkthrough:

     Thus begins another battle between the quarreling lords of Kai and Echigo.
     Speed is essential in order to keep up with Lord Shingen's clever tactics.
     Head for Hachimanbara and engage the enemy, but be on guard, as it is all
     part of Lord Shingen's plan: soon after the first enemy officers are
     defeated, a detached unit of the Takeda army approaches the allied main
     camp from the northwest, closing a pincer attack. Quickly move to intercept
     this unit, led by Nobushige Oyamada and Nobufusa Baba, and prevent it from
     entering the main camp [Mission]; upon success, the Uesugi army's own
     detached unit appears from Zenkoji, advancing towards the Takeda main camp.

     The next major task is to perform a joint attack with the detached unit,
     but there are a few things to take care of along the way. Return to
     Hachimanbara and defeat the enemy officers in the area; also, occupy the
     west garrison, protected by Yoshinobu Takeda [Mission], and then the
     southeast garrison, guarded by Masakage Yamagata [Mission]. Continue west
     from the garrison, where a thick fog (the mini-map is unavailable in this
     area) provides the perfect setting for an enemy ambush. Indeed, Masakiyo
     Morozumi, Masatsugu Tsuchiya and Nobutoyo Takeda lie there in wait, and
     must be eliminated in order to protect the unit [Mission].

     Now proceed towards the Takeda main camp. Initially, the gates are closed,
     but Lord Shingen soon opens them, revealing the presence of Sakon Shima by
     his side. Eliminate him, and finally bring victory to the Uesugi by
     defeating Lord Shingen.

Note: Failure to join the Uesugi army's detached unit on time causes Lord
     Shingen to use a different ploy: he moves his main camp to the central
     south area and enemy reinforcements arrive, including Sakon Shima in hyper
     mode, who advances towards the allied main camp from the southeast and must
     be defeated [Mission].


4.2 Battle of Tedorigawa

     The Uesugi army was victorious at Kawanakajima. However, neither Shingen
     nor Kenshin was satisfied with the battle, so the two men decided to save
     their conflicts for another day. Meanwhile, Nobunaga Oda had begun to
     expand his territory while Kenshin and Shingen were busy fighting one
     another.

     Kenshin was furious when he learned that a lord of lesser influence than
     himself was growing so powerful. He quickly readied his army to attack the
     Oda where they were positioned at Tedorigawa. However, recent heavy rains
     had separated the main Oda forces from their commander. Nobunaga was
     nowhere to be seen. As a result, Nobunaga's retainers Katsuie and Hideyoshi
     were left to fend off Kenshin's assault by themselves...

Victory Condition: Defeat Katsuie.
Defeat Condition: Kenshin is defeated.

Walkthrough:

     Start by clearing the east area of enemy officers. Lord Kenshin soon
     announces his intention of flooding the area where the Oda army is
     positioned, as an allied unit heads for Funaoka Castle in order to execute
     this plan. As usual, the unit requires assitance; however, know beforehand
     that the flooding causes enemy officers on the central area of the map, as
     well as Hideyoshi, to retreat, so if you wish to defeat them personally,
     now is the time to do so. If Hideyoshi is encountered before the flooding,
     there is a [Mission] to defeat him; the same applies for Katsuie Shibata if
     encountered before he crosses the sandbar, but I do not recommend defeating
     Katsuie without the ploy, as this makes the battle more difficult.

     Whenever ready, seize control of Funaoka Castle [Mission] by defeating
     Mitsuhide Akechi and Morinari Ando. Katsuie Shibata should be south from
     the allied main camp by now, so go there and eliminate him. The condition
     for victory has been met, right? Wrong. Now it is Nobunaga that must be
     defeated. If Hideyoshi was still on the battlefield at the time of the
     flooding, he returns upon the fall of Katsuie and advances from the south
     towards the allied main camp. If not, the Oda's main force, commanded by
     Nobunaga, arrives.

     Head west to meet Lady No before she crosses the sandbar [Mission]; then
     encounter Oichi and prevent her from entering the main camp [Mission].
     Defeat any remaining enemy officers and proceed southwest, to the enemy
     main camp, where Ranmaru Mori guards the entrance. Eliminate him and then
     Nobunaga to win the battle.


4.3 Siege of Odawara Castle

     The battle of Tedorigawa ended in victory for the Uesugi. However, they
     were unable to pursue their enemy, as Kenshin died of illness soon after
     the battle ended.

     Time passed, and Nobunaga was assassinated by Mitsuhide Akechi in a
     rebellion at the temple of Honnoji. Hideyoshi then killed Mitsuhide,
     becoming Nobunaga's successor and amassing great power. Masamune Date saw
     that he was no match against Hideyoshi's capability to wage war and
     surrendered. This left the Hojo clan, who occupied the eastern Kanto region
     as Hideyoshi's only remaining enemy.

     To overtake the Hojo stronghold of Odawara Castle, Hideyoshi divided his
     army and attacked their position from two sides. Kanetsugu was among the
     warriors who advanced from the west...

Defeat Condition: Hideyoshi is defeated

Walkthrough:

     The Toyotomi army is attacking Odawara Castle, and Mitsunari Ishida
     determines that it would be of great help if Hideyoshi and his allies had a
     castle of their own. Mt. Ishigaki seems like a good construction site, but
     it is currently occupied by the enemy; seize control of it [Mission] so
     that Mitsunari may carry out his project. This causes the Hojo officers
     positioned inside the north garrison to advance towards the allied main
     camp, but Yukimura Sanada and Sakon Shima are nearby, so let them handle
     the situation for now. The most immediate concern is that Ujimitsu Hojo and
     Ujinori Uesugi, who are positioned inside the south garrison, become
     suspicious as Mt. Ishigaki is taken, and decide to investigate; stop them
     before they reach Mt. Ishigaki [Mission] and use this chance to close the
     two enemy entry points to the south as well.

     Also around this time, Kanbei Kuroda and his group of engineers arrive at
     the southwest, with the intention of building the castle; however, they are
     trapped inside a garrison with enemy officer Ujitada Hojo, so hurry to
     assist them and clear the path to Mt. Ishigaki so that they may begin their
     task (note that Kanbei will stop and fight whatever enemy units he finds
     along the way, so the area must be entirely clear for him to advance).

     Once Kanbei and his engineers are on their way to Mt. Ishigaki, go north
     and get rid of Ujitaka Hojo and Norisada Ueda before they enter the allied
     main camp [Mission]. From here, head southeast to eliminate Yasusato
     Matsuda (he enjoys destroying the siege ramp that Kanbei sends to Odawara
     upon finishing the construction of the castle), as well as the other enemy
     officers outside the walls of Odawara Castle.

     Mitsunari and Kanbei should be done with their work by now, which greatly
     lowers the Hojo army's morale. Kotaro Fuuma closes the gate of Odawara, but
     it is possible to enter the castle either via siege ramp if it is there, or
     through the northeast after defeating the enemy officers that guard the
     corresponding gate. Whichever the case, setting foot inside the castle
     causes Norihide Matsuda, who has betrayed the Hojo and joined Hideyoshi's
     forces, to be discovered; find this treacherous man and rescue him
     [Mission]; he is inside a room to the south, within the castle walls.

     After the battlefield has been cleared of enemy officers, the next part
     begins: enter Odawara Castle itself, in order to search for the enemy
     commander. It can be accessed through the center of the walled area. The 
     castle is relatively small, but on the first two floors there are doors
     that must be opened through a mechanism; a ninja explains that the
     mechanism to open the door on the first floor is on the second floor, and
     the mechanism to open the door on the second floor is on the first floor.
     Here are some very basic maps of the castle:

     The idea is simple: go to Floor 2 and activate the mechanism to open the
     door on Floor 1, which grants access to the area where the mechanism to
     open the door on Floor 2 is. Activate said mechanism, return to Floor 2 and
     continue to Floor 3, where Ujimasa Hojo can be found and defeated... Or so
     it seemed. Upon his defeat, Kotaro Fuuma appears (in hyper mode) and says
     that the man inside the castle was not the real Ujimasa Hojo, who, by the
     way, is now heading for the allied main camp with three of his officers.
     Defeat Kotaro Fuuma, quickly exit the castle and eliminate what remains of
     the Hojo clan, and finally Ujimasa. Thus Hideyoshi's last powerful enemy
     vanishes into oblivion.


4.4 Battle of Hasedo

     Odawara Castle fell and Japan was finally unified by Hideyoshi. However,
     after Hideyoshi's death, Ieyasu Tokugawa stood up to claim control of the
     land. He was opposed by Kanetsugu's friend and Hideyoshi's former retainer,
     Mitsunari Ishida.

     Kanetsugu was angered by Ieyasu's lust for power and sent him a letter
     expressing that such actions were disdained by the Uesugi code of honor. He
     then joined Mitsunari's forces to oppose Ieyasu.

     The two friends decided to attack Ieyasu separately, one from the east and
     the other from the west, thus effectively surrounding him. It was a clever
     tactic that they hoped would do away with him completely...

Victory Condition: The allied officers arrive at the Escape Point.
Defeat Condition: All allied officers other than Kanetsugu are defeated.

Walkthrough:

     The main goal in this battle is to aid the escape of three officers of the
     Uesugi Army. Head north and clear the first and second gates by eliminating
     all enemy officers that stand in the way (note that once an officer is
     defeated his troops generally retreat). When the group reaches the third
     gate, enemies arrive at the south, and "uncle Keiji" (he said it, not I)
     volunteers to hold them off while allied officers continue their escape. At
     this point, either move forward and let Keiji deal with three enemy
     officers by himself, or turn back and show him some gratitude by getting
     rid of them. Whichever the case, he closes the third gate once all allies,
     including Kanetsugu, have gone past it.

     Back to the main task, escort the three allied officers to the escape point
     [Mission]. An ambush awaits past the third gate; eliminate the four enemy
     officers in the area, clear the fourth gate and prepare for yet another
     ambush. As always, defeat all enemy officers, but note that troops continue
     to come from the enemy entry point to the west even after the ambush has
     been eliminated, and it cannot be closed. Also, Masamune Date arrives at
     the south with his main force around this time, and the victory condition
     changes: Masamune must be defeated. For now, however, let the allied
     officers fight to their hearts' content and clear the fifth and last gate,
     where the last ambush comes up. After taking care of it, turn back and slay
     remaining enemy troops so that the allied officers will move on to the
     escape point. Turn back once they are on their way, and defeat the Date
     army and Masamune himself to win the battle.


4.5 Siege of Edo Castle

     Kanetsugu's prowess brought victory for the Uesugi army at Hasedo. They had
     defeated the lord of Oshu, Masamune. To prove that Mitsunari had not died
     in vain, Kanetsugu swore revenge on the Tokugawa. With Yukimura Sanada, he
     marched for Edo Castle, the Tokugawa's main base and residence of Hidetada,
     son of Ieyasu.

     Their unexpected strike on Edo castle caught Hidetada off guard, giving the
     Uesugi an initial advantage. However, Ieyasu himself was also heading for
     the city, with his enormous army in tow...

Victory Condition: Defeat Hidetada.
Defeat Condition: Kagekatsu, Kanetsugu or Keiji is defeated.

Walkthrough:

     The first objective in this battle is to occupy Edo Castle's main keep.
     Enter the walled area through the west and head for the small keep,
     defeating enemy officers along the way. Once inside the small keep, go to
     the second floor and seize control of it [Mission], which causes the door
     that connects with the main keep to open. Continue to the main keep, defeat
     Ina and move on to the next floor to slay Hidetada Ieyasu. Edo Castle now
     belongs to the Uesugi Coalition, but in order to achieve victory it is
     necessary to eliminate Ieyasu himself, whose army has already begun to show
     up by now.

     Exit the castle and head straight for the allied main camp, where Kagekatsu
     Uesugi is very much in need of assistance. Soon after Ieyasu's arrival to
     the battlefield, Kagekatsu starts moving towards Edo Castle's main keep in
     order to establish a new main camp there. Escort him [Mission] and defeat
     all enemy officers that stand in his way so that he may reach his
     destination safely. After this, Tadakatsu Honda and Masamune Date join the
     battle. Quickly intercept Masamune at the northwest to prevent him from
     entering the main keep [Mission], and then Tadakatsu at the center for the
     same purpose [Mission]. Now defeat any remaining enemy officers and finally
     eliminate Ieyasu to win the battle.


4.6 Kanetsugu's Dream: Last Stand against Ieyasu*

     Disgusted at Ieyasu for using Hideyoshi's death as a justification to rule
     the land, Kanetsugu allied himself with Mitsunari Ishida, Ieyasu's greatest
     opponent. Enraged, Ieyasu marched east to destroy the Uesugi. He didn't
     realize that Mitsunari was also marching from the west and his army would
     soon be surrounded.

     But just when it looked like Kanetsugu and Mitsunari's plot had succeeded,
     one of Ieyasu's scouts learned what was happening. Ieyasu quickly turned
     his forces around, sending Masamune Date to deal with the Uesugi. However,
     Kanetsugu swore to honor his promise to his friend and pursued Ieyasu. At
     Kawanakajima, he finally caught up to his enemy...

Defeat Condition: Kagekatsu, Keiji or Yukimura is defeated.

Walkthrough:

     For the first part of this battle, concentrate on defending the main camp
     from the many enemy officers that charge into it. Keiji Maeda and Kagekatsu
     Uesugi soon join the battle; while Keiji can very well take care of
     himself, Kagekatsu requires assistance [Mission] as he moves towards the
     main camp. Defeat all enemy officers in the area, including Masamune Date
     when he arrives.

     Not long into the stage, Yukimura Sanada also joins the battle to support
     the Uesugi Coalition, while Ieyasu calls his protector, Tadakatsu Honda.
     Defeat him [Mission] and the officer that accompanies him; then defeat Ina,
     Hanzo Hattori and all remaining enemies. When Kanetsugu gets close to
     Ieyasu's main camp, the deliciously evil Kojiro Sasaki shows up; defeat him
     [Mission] and then proceed to slay Ieyasu to win the battle.

* This is a bonus stage, unlocked by completing Kanetsugu's Tale. Also, it
  contain's Kanetsugu's fourth weapon (for more details, see section 5.2).

5.1 General List

5.2 Obtaining the Fourth Weapon

Stage: Last Stand against Ieyasu
Mode: Story Mode
Difficulty Setting: Hard
Requirements: While all allies are alive, defeat Masamune Date, Tadakatsu Honda,
     Ina and Hanzo Hattori, in that order.

Procedure: 

1. Start by eliminating all enemy officers that charge towards the main camp.
   Kagekatsu Uesugi and Keiji Maeda arrive a few minutes into the stage; not
   much later, Masamune Date, the first target, joins the battle.
2. Defeat Masamune, as well as any other enemy officers that stand between
   Kagekatsu and the main camp, so that he may arrive there safely [Mission].
3. Continue to defend the main camp; Yukimura Sanada eventually comes to the
   aid of the Uesugi and Ieyasu announces that he has a defender of his own:
   Tadakatsu Honda, who, by the way, is in hyper mode and accompanied by another
   officer. (From this point forward, speed is essential. I recommend to do an
   interim save before fighting Tadakatsu, just in case.)
4. Defeat Tadakatsu [Mission] and the officer with him, as fast as possible.
5. Immediately proceed to the southeast garrison in order to eliminate Ina
   [Mission]. Do not stop to defeat the officers with her just yet.
6. Move on to defeat Hanzo Hattori [Mission]. If all allied officers are still
   alive, a transport unit appears at the upper central enemy entry point and
   heads northeast.
7. Defeat the Supply Captain [Mission] for the weapon.
8. Continue the stage as normal and slay Ieyasu to win.

Notes and Recommendations:

- Build up Kanetsugu as much as possible. Due to the extremely tight timing, the
  weapon is rather difficult to get, even at level 50.
- Equip a fully-upgraded third weapon. One with an element and attack bonus is
  preferred.
- Equip a mount with high speed, Matsukaze if possible.
- It is a good idea to use the Interim Save function throughout the stage.

  6. Moves
============

6.1 Move List

This is the diagram of Kanetsugu's moves. Since he will gain new moves as he
advances in level, I have included both the initial and the final lists as
reference. Note that my diagram for the two Special moves varies from the one
presented in the game; this is because the original diagram can be misleading:
Kanetsugu's second and third level Special moves are activated by holding down
R1 and then pressing S or T once, twice or thrice, as opposed to pressing R1
before every S or T.

6.2 Normal Attacks

 Rush S : Swings his sword in a wide arc, and at the same time his charms move
          in a whole circle around him.

Jump +
      S : Jumps and throws his charms downward, where they quickly circle around
          him a single time.

SSSSSSSS: Swings his sword three times from side to side, followed by a 360
          degrees slash; then swings three times more and finishes with a second
          360 degrees slash in the opposite direction.


6.3 Charge Attacks

Jump +
      T : Jumps, and when he lands, his three charms surround him and hit the
          ground for a small area effect.

   T(T) : Throws his charms forward a short distance, knocking back enemies in
          front of him; if T is pressed again, the charms hit the ground after
          the first attack, causing an explosion.

  ST(T) : Swings his sword once and then swings again to throw his opponent up
          into the air; if T is pressed again, his three charms extend in front
          of him as he jumps to hit his foe once with his sword, throwing them
          back to the ground for an area effect.

 SST(T) : Swings his sword twice and then makes his charms spin rapidly as he
          hits the opponent in front of him, for damage and disorientation; if
          T is pressed again, he thrusts once with his sword and a purple star
          appears as a beam of light shoots from it, knocking the target back a
          considerable distance.

SSST(T) : Swings three times and then drives his sword into the ground as his
          charms spin rapidly in a large circle around him; if T is pressed once
          more, he drives his sword into the ground again and shoots beams of
          light in all horizontal directions around himself.


6.4 Special Moves

R1+
  S(SS) : Says, "Heaven, protect me!", and a large number of spinning charms
          form a circle around him; as they disappear when the effect wears off,
          an explosion occurs near him. If S is pressed twice, the formed
          circle is wider, and even wider if S is pressed thrice. The charms hit
          enemies near him and throw them upwards.

Note: The area between Kanetsugu and the circumference is unprotected and enemy
     officers may avoid the spinning charms by dodging towards him. Despite this
     fact, the protective charms can be useful after throwing back an enemy that
     will surely return and try to him, or for adding up to combos.

R1+
  T(TT) : Throws his charms to the ground in front of him and a purple column
          of energy that slows enemies down appears briefly; if T is pressed
          twice, a significantly wider column appears; if T is pressed thrice,
          the purple energy forms a barrier around him, covering an area as
          wide as the screen.

Note: This move can leave enemies defenseless if used wisely. Unless enemies
     nearby are busy hitting someone else, it is usually best to use the first
     level of the move (a single T), since higher levels take longer to activate
     and Kanetsugu is open for a hit while charging up.


6.5 Musou

In Samurai Warriors 2, the Musou Gauge is divided in three sections that
determine the strength of the Musou attack. Each character begins with a
fragment of one section, and will gradually complete all three as he or she
gains levels and Musou stat. Like in the first Samurai Warriors, there are two
options for the use of Musou attacks: either press and hold O to perform the
character's unique Musou, or tap O and use regular attacks while Musou is
active. The following are Kanetsugu's unique Musou attacks:

Level 1 : Stands while his charms spin rapidly in a circle in front of him, and
          finishes with a wave of energy that hits all enemies within a large
          area around him; he can rotate, but not advance in any direction.
          Indicated by a blue aura.

Level 2 : Stands while his charms spin rapidly in a circle in front of him, and
          finishes with a wave of energy that hits all enemies within a large
          area around him; he can rotate, but not advance in any direction. It
          seems to hit a larger area than level 1. Indicated by a green aura.

Level 3 : Stands while his charms spin rapidly in a circle in front of him and
          meteors rain upon a very large area, and finishes with a wave of
          energy that hits all enemies within a large area around him; he can
          rotate, but not advance in any direction. This version can add up for
          hundreds of combos in crowds, but is less effective against officers,
          because they find a way to avoid the hits more often than not; in the
          unlikely event that the targetted officer does take at least most of
          the hits, however, it inflicts quite considerable damage. Indicated by
          a yellow aura.

Double
  Musou : Performed with the aid of a guard or a second player, this Musou
          attack is enhanced by lightning element and does many more hits than a
          single Musou. In Kanetsugu's case, this can mean well over a thousand
          hits against crowds at level 3. Indicated by red waves of electricity
          that link both parties in proximity.
