01. Introduction/Reveiw

Welcome to the Pro Evolution Soccer 2 guide. In this guide i will talk about all the different aspects of the game. Hopefully after reading this you will become better at the game and it will become more enjoyable. For people who are new to the game you can learn about the basics of the game and how to play a good match. If you think you are a pro then you never know, there might be something here that you don't know. If you are stuck or confused, feel free to email me at [email protected] and ask any question that you have about the game. Or if you know something that is not in the guide then please email me and i will add it. You will be given credit for it. If you want to do your own walkthrough and you don't know where to start just ask me. I have also done walkthroughs for Spiderman 2, James Bond: Everything or Nothing and The Sims on the PC.

Reveiw

This is the best PS2 football game. The gameplay is fabulous! There is so much to do. The good thing is that the scoring is really life like. In a lot of football games you can score from the half way line but in this game it is really realistic. You can ocasionally score from outside the penalty area with players like Scholes and Gerrard, but most goals come from one on one with the keeper or from set peices.

There are lots of things to do as well. There is a tutorial and a training section. This allows you to practice free kicks, corners and different moves in a match. It also shows you how to play the game. There is an edit mode which you can use to create your own player and register him with any country. There is a slight fault in which you can get anyone play for anyone. E.g Ronalo playing for England. See the cheats section to find out how. There is also a competition for which you can earn points which you can use to buy things. You can also have a commentary name so if there is a footballer with your name you can get it so that the commentators say that when your created player gets the ball.

The graphics are pretty good in the game. The pitch and the Players look quite realistic. Especially famous players like Beckham and Zidane. By the way, incase your wondering, one team has all of the players called Orange001, Orange002 etc. This is because they don't have the rights to use the players real names. But this can be easily fixed. Go to edit mode and look at the players. Work out who they are and just edit their name. Simple.

02. Rules

The rules are exactly the same as normal football. But incase you are unsure of something, here are the rules.

Fouls. Fouls are given when you try and tackle a player aggressively. If you tackle a player from behind or slide him and take his legs and not the ball that is a foul. If it is just a mild foul then nothing will happen. If it is dangerous then you will get a yellow card. Get two and you will be sent off. If you are playing in a cup or league and a player getd two yellow cards in seperate games then that player will miss the next game. If you do a really bad tackle, like taking a players legs out when he is past you and is one on one with the keeper, or you take a man without the ball then you will get a red card. This is an immediate sending off.

You can't put someone on in his place. You just have to play with ten men. If you get too many red cards, and are down to about six men, then you will automatically forfit the match. If a keeper gets sent off then substitute an out field player for a keeper. Then put him in goal. If you do not have any subtitutes then put another player from the pitch in goal. Always save a substitution incase you get an injured player. Or else they will have to play injured and will be really slow and rubbish. So be carefull.

Offside is a common problem. A player is offside if, when the ball is kicked, one of your players is the closest to the oppositions goalie. I hope that makes sense. It is to stop you just leaving a player right by the oppositions goal and hitting the ball upto him and scoring a goal. Offsides don't get anything like a card. It is just really annouying. There is a way of putting on the offside trap which moves your defence forward to catch an opponents up fronter offside. See the starting a match section for more details. Occsionaly you can get fouls for hand-ball. If you are really unlucky you might get a yellow card. I have done it before. If you do a mild foul then advantage will be played if the team that was fouled has the ball and have a good chance of scoring.

If the ball goes off the pitch on the side then it is a throw in to the opposition. If you kick the ball past your opponents goal then it is a goal kick. If you kick it past your goal, usually a deflection, then it is a corner. For tips on these set peices look at the set peices section. If you have any questions about the rules just email me at the address given at the top of this guide.

Substitutions can only come on when the ball is out of play. Go to the formation menu and select the person you want to take off, and then select the person you want to put in that position. Make sure they play in the position that you put them. You can also make formation changes. A game will last the amount of time you set it to. If there are fouls, which there will be, then the time is added onto the end. This is known as stoppage time. If the time is reached and the ball is in the opponents half and you or them are close to scoring the game will carry on. The game will only end if the ball is in the middle, no one is near scoring or if the ball is in the air or out of play.

Hold Square to make a team mate close to the ball after the player you are controling, apply pressure. Use the directional button and R1 to get your player close to the oppositions player who has the ball. Press Circle to perform a sliding tackle. If the ball is in the air your player will do a clearance header. Square will also clear the ball.

Press triangle when an opposition player has the ball to get the keeper to sprint out and take the ball. If the opposition kicked the ball and it is going off, press the R1 and R2 buttons together when a player of yours is automatically chasing the ball to make him give up. Use R2 and the directional button to control players when the ball is in the air.

05. Advanced Attack controls

There are many different types of dribbling. Each having an advantage and disadvantage. The usual dribble method is just to push the directional button when you have the ball. When dribbling press R2 to jump if a player tries to slide tackle you. To stop the ball release the directional button and press R1 to stop the ball moving. If you are changing directions press R2 to kick the ball hard. Now here are some other types of dribble. The dash dribble is useful for getting round players. Press the R1 button when dribbling. To give the ball a powerful kick tap the directional button twice in the direction you wish to go.

To perform the super high speed dribble just hold down R1 and press the directional button in the direction you wish to go. Hold R2 to do a moderately fast dribble. This is slower than the super high speed dribble but you have more control. Lastly, to do a low speed dribble let go of the directional button while dribbling. Note that using R1 may mean that you move faster but you
can be tackled easily and it takes much longer to turn so it is easy just to dribble off the pitch. Use this when there are defenders chasing you from behind or if you make a break.

To get around people just walk towards them using a normal dribble and at the last minute hit the directional button downwards. If you are running down the line and want to cross it but there are defenders right behind you, hold R1 to speed up. They will speed up to keep up with you. Then just push the directional button the other way to do a sharp turn. They will not be expecting this so they will turn late. As they were using R1 you have a lot of time to cross the ball or pass to someone else.

To feint whilst dribbling tap the L1 button rapidly. To do a quick feint press R2 rapidly whilst dribbling. If you have a player who can perform the two foot feint, push the directional button forward/right and forward/left quickly in the directon the player is dribbling. If you are near the goal press square to build up the power bar then hit X to cancel the shot. The opposition will think that you are shooting and you can get around them. If you hit X while the power bar is filling up you won't pass it. You will still have the ball so don't worry if there is no one around you, you won't loose the ball.

To perform a short pass hit X in the desired direction. If you turn and pass or are off balance then it will be a slow pass which the opposition can intercept. To do a heel pass push the directional button the opposite way and hit X. To do a through pass feint Press the R1 button immediately before the ball reaches you feet. Make sure that you are not holding the directional button. The ball will run through the player's legs. Make sure that you have a team mate behind you. To perform a direct short pass press X and a directional button before the ball comes to you to pass the ball in that direction. Press R1 or R2 before the ball reaches you to perform a powerful a powerful kick.

To perform a long pass hit circle. The longer you hold it the higher and further the ball will go. To Perform a direct long pass hold a directional button and press circle before the ball reaches your feet to do a long kick. The longer you hold circle the higher and further the ball will go. To hit the ball over to the other side of the pitch hold circle and press the desired directional button. The longer you hold circle the higher and further the ball will go. This is useful if there are too many oppositon players around you. You will then have a good chance to sprint ahead. Make sure no one is there because the ball can be intercepted easily.

Press Triangle to hit the ball forward between defenders to a player. The ball will not be passed directly to the player. This is used to get one on one with the goalie. This pass can be intercepted easily so make sure you play it at the right time. To Perform a direct through pass hold a directional button and press triangle before the ball reaches your feet to send a through pass in the desired direction. To perform a through pass in the air press L1 and hit triangle and hold the direction button in the direction you want the ball to go.

You can centre the ball in lots of different way. To centre the ball to the far side press circle. The player furthest away will go for the ball. To centre to the near side hit circle twice. The closest player will go for the ball. To centre the ball along the ground hit circle three times. Or if you are in the opponents penalty area then press X when facing the end line or to either side. When centring the ball press R2 to increase the height of the ball. To perform an early cross hold L1 and press circle. This is not just effective in the opponents half, but anywhere on the pitch.

Hold down L1 and press X to pass the ball to a team mate. Before you team mate receives the ball press triangle to send a return pass. To do a one-two pass in the air press the X button whilst holding down L1 to do a short pass. Then press circle immediately before the team mate receives the ball to do a return pass. Press the R2 button immediately after passing the ball to make the player who passed the ball sprint forward.

To perform a manual pass push the right analog stick in the direction you wish the ball to go. The power of the pass depends on how long the right analog stick is held. Hold down L1 and push the right analog stick in the desired direction to do a long pass. The power of the pass depends on how long the right analog stick is held.

Shooting. Press the square button to shoot. The height of the shot depends on the length of time the button is held. While the gauge is displayed, press left or right to curl the ball in that direction. Make sure that you don't curl the ball away from the goal. So let go of the directional button if you don't want the ball to curl. To feint a shot press square and while the gauge is displayed press X. This is easier if they are pressed together.

When the ball is in the air press square to header, volley the ball depending on which is easier for the player. To lob the keeper hold down L1 and press square. This will kick the ball high over the keeper. The longer you hold down square the higher and further the ball will go. Use this if the keeper comes out. Just tap square because the ball goes quite far. To hit a lower loop shot press square and then press R1 while the gauge is displayed.

06. Set Peices

Corners. Hold circle to cross the ball. The longer you hold circle the further the ball will go. While the gauge is displayed press left or right to curl the ball (Hit the ball towards the goalie and curl it away so the keeper will be off his line). Press up or down to decide whether the cross will be high or low. To do a short corner kick press X. This will pass the ball to a nearby team mate. You can wait for the defenders to come towards you and then cross it so there are less defenders in the box, making it easier for you to score.

Free Kicks. To just pass the ball to a team mate press X and hold a directional button. Press circle to do a long pass. The longer you hold circle the further the ball will go. While the gauge is displayed press left or right to curl the ball. Press up or down to decide whether the ball will be high or low. Press triangle and a directional button to do a through pass. Good if you are near the
goal. To shoot press Square. The longer you hold Square the further and higher the ball will go. Press left or right to curl the ball and up or down to decide the trajectory of the ball.

You can score free kicks from the edge of the penalty area to about 30metres. It will give you the distance at the top of the screen. If you are Roberto Carlos you can score from about 34metres. I find the easiest is about 30 metres. I curl it up and left. If it is accurate then you can usually get a corner from it. But you can score very often if you know what your doing. Go to the training menu and practice different techniques. You get to decide where you take the free kick from in training mode as well. For a low shot hold R2 and press square. For a high shot hold R2 and press circle. To defend a free kick press square to make the wall jump. Press R1 and two players will run towards the ball and the others will jump. Press X and the wall won't jump.

Throw-ins. Move the player you are controling and when you are happy where he is press X to do a short throw. For a long throw press circle. A good tip is to put the player you are controling right infront of the defender. Then press X and before the player gets the ball hold R1 and the directional button. Now you will get the ball, do a quick turn and will be way ahead of the defender, dribbling towards the oppositions goal, ready for a dangerous cross.

Penalties. The penalties on this game are not that good at all. Sometimes you wack the ball over the bar, sometimes you score. A penalty will be on target depending on the players stats. A player with good penalty stats will usually score. A player with bad stats will probably miss. Even players with really high stats can still score. Hold either left, right, up, down, or diagonal. Then press square. There is no gauge. Sometimes if you just hit it straight in the middle of the goal it will go in if the keeper dives.

To defend a penalty, which is hard, just press a directional button and the keeper will dive in that direction. Press up if you think the opposition will hit the ball in the centre of the goal. In a penalty match a good tip is to kick the ball in different directions and to always dive into the same place because the computer will eventually hit the ball there. If you do it randomly it is very unlikely that you will save the shot. When saving a penalty hit the directional button early, if you do it too late you won't reach the position in time. So even if you dive the right way the ball will go in.

Replay. If you do a good shot but miss then you will sometimes see a reply which you can't control. If you score then you will see two replays from different angles, then one which you can control. Press square to save a reply. They take up a lot of space. Press square to delete something to make room. At the main menu go to saved replys to veiw them. Here are the reply controls.

07. Starting A Match

If you just want to play a normal match, click on exhibition. When the setup screen is displayed press L1 to make player selection manual and R1 to make it automatic. In manual use L1 to change player. Now you have to select your team. Press square if you just want to have random teams. Select the teams and then press left or right to change their kits. This is so that you don't get confused. Once you have chosen your team you move onto the environment settings. Select either day or night. The season and weather. The match time. How hard you opponent is on a star system. One being the worst, five being the best. Select whether players can get injuries. The conditions. Maximun number of substitutes from three to seven. Choose what happens if it is a draw. Extra time which juts involes another thirty minutes of play, golden goal which is the first to score wins or/and penalties. Choose the stadium and whether you get stadium effects. Lastly choose commentary and support stance.

Now you can either go straight into the match or make a few changes to the team. Click on formation and there are lots of options to choose from. Substitutes is obvious. Just click on the player you want to come off, then click on the player you want to come on. Make sure he plays in the place you put him. For formation select different types. E.g 4-4-2, 5-4-1 etc. You can also move the positions of the players by doing create formation. Select captain and which players take what set peices. This doesn't matter because when you get a set peice in the game press start and select, select player, then choose who is going to take the set peice. For strategy choose whether you want you players to focus on defending, attacking or normal. Keep it on normal and if you score put it on defending and if they score put it on attack.

Lastly you can select different gameplay tricks. Look at the Advanced Defending controls for details on how to do this. But you can set an offside trap so in the game you can tell you defenders to come forward and catch your opponents offside. This is really for advanced players. Begginers shouldn't worry about this because it is just a little extra.Press triangle to go back to the original menu. You can save the formation if you want in formation manager. Now put opening ceremony off, unless you want to watch it. It is really boring.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ __ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

08. Training Mode

Training mode is really useful. There are so many things to do. There is a tutorial which shows you the basics for begginers. There is also a competition which gives you points to buy things if you do certain challenges like free kick, long pass ect. The best is probably the free training. You can, from here, just pass the ball around. Just your side and their goalie. Or you can go to substitutes and press start and click on the players you wish to come on for the opposition, so you could play a match without fouls if you set that at the beggining.

You can practice moves and just generally practice a few things as well. Press start and go to training menu for more things. From here you can practice normal training, which i just talked about, one-two pass and shoot, free kicks and left and right corners. For free kicks you can select exactly where you want to take free kicks from. If you put it in the penalty area you can practice penalties.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ __ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

09. Edit Mode

Here you can create and register your own player for a team. You can edit players. So if you wanted you could try out different hairstyles on David Beckham. Though there probably aren't any hairstyles on the game which he hasn't had in real life. You can change players names and edit club team strips, names and flags. By the way Arsenal is called London so you might want to change the name. A lot of clubs have this.

When creating a player you have to choose his nationality, appearance and abilities. This is stupid because you could create eleven players all with full stats and all have every special ability which would make the team perfect. Most games have a limit to the number of points you can give them but this one doesn't. The game is no fun if you just keep scoring. When playing with mates you can laugh about how you hit the crossbar five times in a row.

Once you have created your player register him with his country. Firstly you have to stock him. Then go to the edit mode main menu and select register player. You will have to unregister a player so just unregister a rubish player who you never use. You can also re-register the player back again. If you want the up to date England team just create the missing players, or just buy Pro Evolution Soccer 3.

10. Pause Menu

Press start to access the pause menu. From here you can do lots of things. Click resume game to continue playing. Click formation settings to change the formation and make substitutions, more about that in the "starting a match" section outlined earlier on in this guide. If it is a set peice select the player to take the set peice. Set the whether the player selection is manual or automatic in the player settings, change the camera view, Ajust on screen controls eg: Team name, score, time etc, Select the volume of the commentary and language, change the button configuration and quit match. Not much to say in this section i just wanted to tell you the different things incase you didn't know.

11. Top Ten Tips

Here are my top ten tips for victory.

1. Slide tackling is a last resort. If you miss it takes too long for you to get up to have a chance of getting the ball back.

2. Don't give away free kicks outside the area. X can often foul from behind. Five star computer level can score from free kicks.

3. Don't use R1 unless there is no one infront of you because you are easy to tackle and can't turn quickly.

4. Don't try and shoot too far out because you will just give away the ball.

5. Don't shoot from a turn because you will miss.

6. Keep dribbling in the box until you get a clear shot on goal. Remember feints.

7. Counter attacks are a great way to score.

8. Make sure none of you players are offside.

9. Low shots are harder to save.

10. Through balls only work when used correctly.

12. Cheats

As far as i know there are no valid cheats. The cheat to unlock all teams and cup does not work. If you know of any cheats tell me and i will try them out. If they work i will post them here with credit to you. By the way Pro Evolution Soccer 4 is due out on October 22nd 2004. There are some screen shots of Super Cheats.
