II. INTRODUCTION
===============================================================================

This is the Musou OROCHI Translation Guide made by BlackKite aka.
The Giant Hoeruo at GameFAQs Boards. This guide is made to help import gamers
who play Musou OROCHI, a hack'n'slash game made by KOEI, which is currently
available only in Japan.

This guide contains Japanese text which is saved in the Shift-JIS format,
so in order to be able to show the Japanese text, you need to change your
browser encoding to Japanese (Shift-JIS).

All names here are written with the surname-firstname order. Zhao and Sanada
are surnames; Yun and Yukimura are firstnames.
Thus, Zhao Yun and Sanada Yukimura.

===============================================================================
III. TRANSLATIONS
===============================================================================

First things first, remember the two most basic things in Japanese games:
1. ͂ (Hai) means Yes, and (Iie) means No.
2. Circle button is used to confirm things instead of Cross in NA games,
   and Cross button to cancel things instead of Triangle.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
1. Main Menu
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

After seeing the KOEI logo, Dolby Digital, Omega-Force and either watching or
skipping the opening movie, a huge Musou OROCHI logo should appear.
Press Start, and you'll enter the main menu. The Menu is listed as below.
For more details regarding the modes, please check their respective submenus.

Story Mode
Free Mode
Gallery
Options

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1a. Story Mode
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Story Mode is, well, the main mode of this game. Its system is similar to DW4,
which is kingdom-based Musou Mode. There are 4 different kingdoms to play:
Shu, Wei, Wu and Sengoku. However, don't expect that all characters from that
kingdom belong in that kingdom's story. Sometimes you'll get Wei characters in
Shu story, Wu characters in Sengoku story, etc.

As you enter this mode, you get to choose from one of the kingdoms.
   Shu, green and represented by a dragon
   Wei, blue and represented by a phoenix
   Wu, red and represented by a tiger
퍑 Sengoku, yellow and represented by a lion (Thanks to Geese911 and many
     others for giving information on this. It really isn't Genbu at all...)

After that, you'll go through the intermission menu (see "2. Intermission
(Barracks) Menu" for more details), and then to the stage selection.

Note that you can only use characters that belong in the kingdom's story.
For example, Shimazu Yoshihiro belongs in the Shu story, not Sengoku, so you
can't use him in Sengoku story.
There is, however, a way to make any characters available, which is by
finishing the kingdom's story.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1b. Free Mode
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As usual, in Free Mode you get to use any characters in any stages. As you
enter this mode, you get to choose three different characters. After that,
you'll go through the usual intermission menu and stage selection.

The only notable difference is that enemy generals you defeated will have a
dying quote instead of retreating quote...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1c. Gallery
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gallery is the place where you can see the artistic section of this game.

On the first menu, you can see the character illustrations.
The 1st picture is available as you unlock the character.
The 2nd one is unlocked when you have learned all skills from that character.
The 3rd one is unlocked when you have maxed out the character's attacker level.
The 4th one is unlocked when you get the character's specific item.

On the second menu, you can see larger images of weapons you have obtained.

On the third menu, you can see movies. You can also see opening movies of
all DW-SW games and their expansions, from Shin Sangoku Musou 1 (DW2) to
Sengoku Musou 2 Empires (SW2E).

The last menu is MobileJOY, and as the name suggests, this has to do with KOEI
mobile website contents which is obviously Japan-only. Expect this menu to
disappear from the overseas versions.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1d. Options
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Options section is, obviously, where you can change the game system settings.
Remember that ݒɖ߂ means Return to Default Settings.

Q[ݒ Game Settings
 ̗͕\ Life Display
 Here you can set if you want to have a life bar displayed above enemies or not
 Cxg\ Event Display
 Here you can set if you want to see events or not

Rg[ݒ Controller Settings
 ݒJn Change Settings
 Depending on which controller presses the Circle button, you will go through
 that controller settings (e.g. pressing 2P's Circle here will make you go to
 2P Controller Settings)
  U@\ Rumble Function
  Here you can set if you want to have controller rumble/vibration on or off
  Lؑ Character Change
  You can change the way of changing characters. The default is Type A, where
  R2/L2 is used for this. Choosing the other type (B) will switch R2/L2 to
  Map Change, while you'll change characters with the D-Pad
  {^ݒ Button Setting
  Here you can change the button assignments. Here are the defaults.
   ʏU Normal Attack: Square
   `[WU Charge Attack: Triangle
   o^` Musou Ranbu (DW) or Ougi (SW): Circle
   Wv Jump: Cross
   VtgK[h Shift / Guard : L1
   ^CvANV Type Action : R1 (This is when you do the new specials)
   }bvؑ Map Change : R3

TEhݒ Sound Settings
 VXe System
 Here you change the sound system between XeI Stereo, m Monaural,
 Dolby Pro Logic and Dolby Digital
 BGM BGM Volume
 ʉ Sound Effects Volume
 Zt Voice Volume
 These three are self explanatory.
 TEheXg Sound Test
 More like BGM test... Anyway, this is where you can listen to the BGMs you
 have heard in this game

ʒ Screen Adjust
Self explanatory, this is where you adjust the screen. Remember to press Circle
to confirm adjustment.

\͏ Character Ability Reset
Here is where you can reset the characters back to Level 1.

Z[u^[h Save/Load
Self Explanatory, isn't it?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
2. Intermission (Barracks) Menu
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Actually, this menu is named Barracks, but since this menu is similar
to the Intermission menus in Super Robot Wars and SD Gundam G Gen games, I
can't help naming it the "Intermission" menu.
Anyway, the menu consists of...

o[ύX Member Change
Here you can change the members of your ultimate trio. Remember that you can
change costume color with Triangle, and they're available from the beginning.
Note that this doesn't exist on Free Mode's Intermission, since you already
got to choose characters the moment you enter the mode.

푕 Weapon Equip
This is where you can change equipped weapon. But actually this is also
available in the Pre-Battle Menu...

Z Skill Equip
You can equip up to 7 skills you have acquired. For a list of skills, you can
check the "6. Skill List" section. This is also available in the Pre-Battle
Menu.

olU Experience Distribute
Here you can distribute stock experiences to any characters you have unlocked.
To speed up things, you can press Square to immediately raise a level,
provided that you have the necessary amount of EXP.

Z Weapon Fusion
Yes, this is the new feature of Musou OROCHI. You can fuse the weapons to
make a weapon stronger. First, you choose the base weapon you want to put
upgrades at. Then, you choose another weapon, the stats of which you are going
to put in the base weapon.
After that, you can add elements from the second weapon (There is a list of
elements at the "5. Element List" section), and their max level is 10.
You can also add attack bonus, the maximum point of which is 20.
You can add slots as well, as long as there aren't 8 slots in the base weapon.
Note that the money used here has the same amount as the stock experience you
use in Experience Distribute.
When you're done, don't forget to choose the last blue option.

`[ Team Information
Here you can see the information of the characters in your current team.
The first one is the requirement to learn a new ability. Note that these
requirements, ranging from defeating a certain number of enemies to defeating
a certain number of generals without using Musou-reducing attacks, have to be
done by the character him/herself. This will no longer be shown after the
character has learned all his/her skills.
The second one is a diagram of the character's current moveset.
The third one is the general controller configuration.
You can also see this in the Pre-Battle Menu.

`[gA Tutorial
Here you get to see explanations of the game's new features... in Japanese
of course.

Z[u Save
Self Explanatory.

iRJn Begin Advance
Exits the Intermission Menu and proceeds to the stage selection screen.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
3. Pre-Battle Menu
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

After you have chosen a stage, and either saw the prelude narration (Story) or
not (Free), you will go through this menu before going into battle. You know,
that menu with a big map on the right.
Many of the menus are accessible in the previous ones, so I won't include
descriptions for those already available before.

푕 Weapon Equip
Z Skill Equip
`[ Team Information

s Victory and Defeat Conditions
You can see the battle conditions here, and make sure you check it so that when
you go into battle you don't lose immediately just because your HQ has been
taken over by an enemy blitzkrieg. :P
The above one, , is the condition for winning, while the bottom one,
sk, is the condition for losing. The mentioned general is marked on
the map to help you determine who you need to kill/defend.

Rc Troops Information
Here you can see a list of generals, in your force, the enemy force, and the
third force as well.

ݒύX Setting Change
You can change some options here.
The first option is to (de)activate the life bar.
The second is similar, but for events.
The third one is the same, but it's for the rumble/vibration function.

퓬Jn Begin Battle
Like the name says, if you're ready, choose this to enter the battle.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
4. Pause Menu
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Anytime during a battle, you can press Start to go into pause menu. It's
basically the same as Pre-Battle menu, just with a slightly different menu.

`[ Team Information
s Victory and Defeat Conditions
Rc Troops Information

񗚗 History
You can see all messages you've seen here, like someone has defeated somebody
else, a reinforcement army has arrived, things like that. It might be useful
if you want to know if you have triggered an event or presence of unique items.

ݒύX Setting Change

rۑ Interim Save
If you want to suspend a battle and continue it at a later time without
restarting from beginning, this is your best friend. Might be useful if you're
having difficulty triggering items or defeating a boss.

I Quit
This is, a safer way to reset your game than the usual soft reset
(Start+Select). Make sure you've used the interim save unless you don't want
to continue the battle.

퓬ĊJ Resume Battle
Self Explanatory. Exits the Pause menu and returns to the battle.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
5. Element List
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

 Fire - Gradually decreases enemy HP as long as they haven't
                    recovered yet
 Thunder - Deals Damage to surrounding enemies
X Ice - Chance of freezing enemies temporarily
z Yang - aka Blast in US versions; Deals damage even when the enemy
                    is guarding
a Slash          - aka Vorpal in US versions; Chance of instant-killing peons;
                    generals hit with this element lose a considerable amount
                    of HP
z Life Drain - Self Explanatory; Absorbs HP
z Energy Drain - Absorbs Musou*
jV Sky Crusher - Deals more damage to enemies on-air (like being juggled)
E Valor - Deals more damage to generals
 Whirlwind    - Weapon range up
g Bunshin - Bunshins (Clones) will appear when you attack
_ Godspeed - Attack speed up
Ɉ Main Point - Attack power up
w Last Stand - The lower the HP a character has, the higher the damage the
                    character can deal

*In case you don't know yet, this game's Musou system is similar to that of
Capcom's Devil Kings (Yes, not Sengoku BASARA, it's Devil Kings): you won't
fill up the Musou bar by hitting enemies. Without the Energy Drain element,
the only way to replenish Musou other than Musou recovery items/skills is to
switch characters, and the character will refill his/her Musou gauge while
being benched.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
6. Skill List
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Like in SW2, there are skills that can enchance stats and abilities. However,
unlike SW2, you can not activate all of the skills (as that would make the game
too easy indeed), so like Gundam Musou, you can equip but a limited number of
skills: up to 7. Descriptions of skills will only be added if they are not
self explanatory.

̗͑ Life Increase
o Musou Increase
U Attack Enchance
h䋭 Defense Enchance
x㏸ Speed Rise
np Horse Skill Enchance (Enchances attack & defense while mounted)
^㏸ Luck Rise (Chance of getting better items & weapons)
͌^ Power Enchance (Increases strength of Power-type characters)
^ Speed Enchance (Increases strength of Speed-type characters)
Z^ Technic Enchance (Increases strength of Technic-type characters)
ꋭ Special Enchance (Charge attack power up)
KE Sure-Kill Enchance (Increases power of attacks that consume Musou)
ol Experience Up
ҋ@ Standby Recover
y Consumption Reduce (This reduces amount of Musou consumed by specials)
A Combo Recover (For each 10 hit combo, HP recovers)
񕜑̗ Recover Life
񕜖o Recover Musou

IV. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
===============================================================================

Q: Is this game available for two players?
A: Yes, it is. Note that the two players share the roster of the trio deployed
   at the time.

Q: Does this game have online?
A: No it doesn't.

Q: Do Fu Xi, Nu Wa, Shibata Katsuie, Sasaki Kojirou and Honganji Kennyo show
   up in this game?
A: No they don't. The latter 3 are excuseable since they're still NPCs
   (Katsuie & Kojirou only had mixed-up movesets in SM2E), but I still can't
   understand the exclusion of the former two.

Q: How do I get 4th weapons? Are there 5th weapons?
A: To get 4th weapons, it's very simple. All you need to do is to play in
   Hard difficulty, 4-star stage, and anything harder than that. (May also
   be possible in Hard, 3-star stage, if you have a high luck skill), And
   there'll be a chance one of the weapons you get is a 4th.
   And for the second question, that's a no.

Q: How do I unlock the Gaiden stages?
A: The Gaiden stages are automatically unlocked as you progress through the
   main story.
   The 7th Gaiden will be available after clearing the 6th Gaiden.
   To unlock the 8th/last Gaiden, you need to fulfill some tasks in the 7th
   stage (Main story, that is)
   Shu : Have all ally officers including yourself escape the castle within
            2 minutes after the castle starts to burn
   Wei : Kill Da Ji within one minute after her betrayal
   Wu : Rescue Sun Jian & Quan within 3 minutes
   Sengoku: Get 1000 KOs
   These requirements are from this site. Check it if you know Japanese.
   http://sasugawiki.ddo.jp/orochi

Q: Will there be a US version of this game?
A: KOEI Warriors (http://koeiwariors.simgames.net) stated that this game is
   slated for release in Europe before October, so US should be getting it
   earlier. You'll know the overseas release is near when I stop updating
   this guide.
