Author Contact Information ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. What is "CQC"? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- The term "CQC" stands for "Close Quarter Combat" and is used to describe an up-close military hand-to-hand fighting system. Originally a combination of martial arts and short-range weapon play (such as knives, batons and firearms), the basis of CQC was devised in Asia but now, is used to describe a wide range of mixed martial arts commonly implemented into military training used in different countries throughout the world. CQC is also known as "Trench Warfare" as the up-close fighting system was suitable for tight environments such as military trenches. Originally taught by the Shanghai Municipal Police Force as a self-defense technique for their law enforcement officers, the idea of CQC was to approach and combat your opponent with confidence at a very close range which would restrict the amount of "attack space" the hostile individual had. As a result, the opponent would in a way, be caught off guard and his ability to counter-attack at full strength and potential would be impeded. This would greatly assist the police officers in disarming and restraining an attacker while their optional baton and sidearm would provide self-protection and lethal stopping power if necessary. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2a. Real-life CQC History ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- The man often credited with inventing CQC is William Ewart Fairbairn. Fairbairn, a native son of Britain, lived in China from 1907 to 1939 and was SMP's (Shanghai Municipal Police) most highly recognized instructor of close combat and firearms training. Joining the SMP in 1907, it is legend that Fairbairn observed Chinese martial arts and decided to implement it into military training. The fighting system would later be refined by fellow SMP colleague Eric Anthony Sykes and renamed "Defendu" (Pronounced: "Defen-doo"; a play on words of "Gung Fu".) These two men would also design the legendary Sykes-Fairbairn "commando knife" that was made standard issue to all US and British troops during World War II. Defendu would later be refined by these two men for military training and be called "CQC". In 1935, Fairbairn was promoted to Assistant Commissioner of the SMP and at the height of the SMP's recognition, maintained and trained over 6,000 officers and recruits. Fairbairn is also credited with creating the SMP RU (Reserve Unit); a dedicated anti-riot police unit and precursor to the SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) and ETF (Emergency Task Force) Units that you see all over the world today. Legend also has it that Fairbairn was so highly skilled at CQC that he was able to dodge bullets! Throughout history, the Shanghai Municipal Police is still considered as one of the most efficient, well-trained and deadliest police forces in the world. In 1940, Fairbairn retired from the SMP, returned to Britain and saw the grim position Britain was in due to Adolph Hitler's impending invasion and plot to conquer Britain from Germany. Aiding Britain's war efforts, Fairbairn and Sykes (who was also a native of Britain) enlisted with the British Army and were quickly promoted as Captain Instructors teaching the effective method of CQC. With the newly founded War Office STC (Special Training Center) in Scotland as their school, Fairbairn and Sykes trained hundreds of highly-experienced British soldiers with CQC in preparation for World War II. This would greatly contribute to Hitler's defeat as many British soldiers effectively subdued Nazi soldiers in hand-to-hand "trench battles"; where the tight confines of the trenches still permitted CQC-experienced, British soldiers room to exhibit their skills while the German opposition were less skilled and remained constricted. A common misconception of CQC is that it is just another name for "Defendu". This is incorrect. Defendu is actually an empty-hand fighting system simply focusing on defense and restraint which is normally practiced by police forces. CQC however, is a military fighting system that allows the practitioner to engage an enemy and subdue him with lethal force if necessary. Simply put, William Fairbairn conceived and founded the empty-hand fighting system for police and law enforcement and with the help of Eric Sykes, refined and renamed it "Defendu". Both men would later refine Defendu further more for military use (with lethal properties) and call it CQC. In 1942 and after only 2 years of teaching, both Fairbairn and Sykes left the STC on amiable terms. Sykes traveled the world and soon returned to his family life while Fairbairn moved to reside in various parts of North America (both Canada and the United States) to pass his CQC teachings on to other military and law enforcement institutions in hopes of them continuing to pass the knowledge on to future generations. One of the legendary schools that Fairbairn taught was Intrepid's "Camp-X"; a training school located by Lake Ontario Canada that produced the deadliest Allied Spies. (It is also a known fact that James Bond author Ian Fleming completed training at Camp-X and during one training session, was asked to CQC and "kill" an agent hiding in a bedroom. Too nervous to subdue someone - even in a training simulation - Fleming did not enter the room and complete his mission. It was later revealed to him that the agent waiting in Fleming's bedroom was in fact the legendary Fairbairn and when asked about this, Fleming stated that he was glad he didn't enter the room and confront "a fearsome man capable of stopping bullets". Despite this moment, Fleming still took Fairbairn's teachings to heart and quickly excelled to the rank of British Naval Intelligence Commander at the height of World War II.) In 1945, Fairbairn finally retired from the private sector and rejoined his family at the age of 60. A highly-decorated instructor, Fairbairn would also author the textbooks "Scientific Self-Defence" and "Get Tough!" and live to the age of 75. To this day, CQC is taught in every military branch throughout the world and although each individual country's military may feature their own form of martial arts, the basic foundation of CQC and Fairbairn's teachings still lives on. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2b. Metal Gear Solid CQC History ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- According to the Metal Gear Solid 3 storyline, the two people credited for inventing the CQC fighting system are The Joy (AKA The Boss) and Snake. Although the backstory on the creation of CQC did not go into too much detail, it is stated in the game that The Boss would invent and introduce the empty-hand fighting technique with her protg Snake for "on the field" battle situations. The technique is so effective that even Snake utilizes it in many key action sequences in the game. FACT: Reprising his role as the Military Advisor for the Metal Gear Solid franchise, Motosada Mori worked closely with Hideo Kojima and the KCEJ Snake Eater production team on all military aspects of this game. Motosada, a former SWAT instructor with over 20 years of military experience, also served as the motion capture actor for all CQC action sequences in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. MGS3 In-game CQC Controls ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- In addition to stealthy sneaking and explosive weapon play, MGS3 offers the new feature of CQC. With CQC, battles become more stylish, intense and dramatic as Snake combats his opponents with complex hand-to-hand maneuvers which - luckily for the gamer - are easy to do. The following section provides directional controls on performing CQC maneuvers. IMPORTANT NOTE: For the sake of convenience during testing and writing of this FAQ, all CQC actions in this game were conducted on the "Very Easy" level of difficulty. If you find it difficult to execute a certain CQC maneuver in your game, please note that a higher level of difficulty may be the cause and provide a tougher challenge. Gaming discretion is advised. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3a. Standard CQC Moves ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Before applying CQC grappling techniques to enemy soldiers, we should first be aware of Snake's standard attacks. This is an excellent foundation for more complicated CQC moves as practicing these basic moves will give you a feel for CQC and allow you to engage in more complicated attack combinations. Here is Snake's standard CQC moveset: 1. PUNCH - Simply tap the CIRCLE button once and Snake will throw one punch. 2. PUNCH-PUNCH COMBINATION - Tap the CIRCLE button twice and Snake will throw a 1-2 punch combination. 3. PUNCH-PUNCH-PUNCH COMBINATION - Tap the CIRCLE button exactly three times and Snake will do a 1-2-3 punch combination that can stun an enemy and set you up for a CQC grapple attack. 4. 1-2-3-KICK COMBINATION - Tap the CIRCLE button repeatedly and Snake will do a 1-2-3 punch and kick combination. If close enough to an enemy soldier, this attack can actually knock the enemy down and give you time to either escape or regroup for another CQC attack. Practice these moves repeatedly and you will be able to pull off stylish CQC combination attacks. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3b. Behind the Enemy CQC ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- To perform a CQC action behind an enemy, Snake must do two actions. The first action is to subdue and restrain an enemy from behind. To do this: 1. Quietly sneak up behind an enemy soldier by using the Directional Pad. (Tip: To make things easier, if you've already acquired the "Spirit" camouflage, you may wear it to eliminate the sound of your footsteps.) 2. Once Snake is behind an enemy soldier, press and hold the CIRCLE button and Snake will subdue and restrain the enemy. Now that Snake has subdued an enemy, you have several options. These are the secondary actions that Snake can do: A. Drag enemy B. Interrogate enemy C. Use enemy as a human shield D. Throw enemy down to the ground E. Choke/snap neck F. Slit enemy's throat A. DRAG ENEMY - To drag an enemy, simply use the LEFT ANALOG STICK to move Snake while continuing to hold down the CIRCLE button. By doing this, Snake will drag the enemy soldier around like a hostage. B. INTERROGATE ENEMY - To interrogate an enemy for information, continue restraining the enemy soldier and then press and hold the L3 button (LEFT ANALOG STICK). By doing this, Snake will threaten the soldier with his knife and interrogate him for information. C. THE HUMAN SHIELD - By holding the enemy soldier and pressing the SQUARE button, Snake will aim his gun either straight ahead or at the nearest person. With the SQUARE button pressed down, you may let go of the CIRCLE button now and Snake will continue to hold the enemy soldier like a shield as he aims his pistol. Pressing the R1 button now will allow you to look in First Person View (which is a better view to aim with). (NOTE: To do this move, Snake must have a CQC-enabled firearm equipped.) D. THE ENEMY TAKEDOWN - If you're still holding the enemy soldier and wish to throw him down, simply move the LEFT ANALOG STICK and tap the CIRCLE button again. Depending on the direction Snake is facing in the game and the direction you move the LEFT ANALOG STICK, Snake will throw the enemy down in either one of two ways: A. Forward Throw B. Backward Throw The Forward Throw is when Snake pushes the enemy soldier forward so that the soldier falls forward and lands on his chest in front of Snake. By doing this throw, Snake now has a golden opportunity to switch to First Person View and hold the soldier up with a firearm ("Freeze!") and receive some ammunition or foodstuffs. Note: Once you throw a soldier down and hold him up, he will remain on the ground and not get up afterwards (unless another enemy soldier checks on him or you leave the area.) The Backward Throw is when Snake yanks the soldier down so that he falls onto his back next to Snake's feet. By doing this, Snake can use his punch-punch- kick combination and kick the soldier. Snake may also hold the soldier up with a firearm but this method is less effective as the soldier usually gets up immediately and once he gets up, he will either 1/ graciously surrender or 2/ continue attacking you so prepare yourself. It should also be noted that if you're quick enough to backward throw and then hold the enemy up, the enemy will not get up but instead, rollover onto his stomach and surrender. Of these two moves, the Forward Throw is the most effective because when Snake forward throws an enemy soldier, the soldier lands in clear, perfect view in front of Snake which saves you weapon drawing and aiming time. When you forward throw a soldier, all you have to do is switch to First Person View and you will notice that the soldier is in front of Snake and in perfect range for the holdup. The backwards throw however, requires Snake to quickly switch to First Person View, look down at the soldier [by Snake's feet] and aim and considering the thrown soldiers get up after only 1 second, this method is not 100% successful for gamers slow on the controls. E. THE CHOKE/NECK SNAP - A fan favorite move from Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2. If Snake is holding an enemy soldier and you quickly tap the CIRCLE button, Snake will apply a chokehold to the soldier. This is an effective move for when the soldier is struggling and trying to escape your restraint. By choking the soldier when he struggles, you weaken him again. If you continue to tap the CIRCLE button repeatedly, Snake will eventually snap the soldier's neck. F. THE THROAT SLICE - When holding an enemy soldier in the traditional CQC restraint position, if you depress the CIRCLE button firmly, Snake will slit the soldier's throat and kill him. This is an effective move to silence an enemy soldier and prevent him from either attacking you later or fleeing and calling reinforcements. (NOTE: When holding the CIRCLE button to restrain an enemy soldier, always remember that the buttons on the Playstation 2/PStwo controllers are pressure sensitive so if you apply a bit too much pressure, the game will interpret that as a second action and react accordingly. Please see Section 6 for more information.) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3c. In front of the Enemy CQC ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are only two CQC moves for Snake when he is facing an enemy soldier: A. Subdue B. Knock-out Takedown A. SUBDUE - This is the subdue maneuver that Snake uses to restrain his enemies. (See "The first action" in Section 3b.) When facing an enemy soldier, Snake will spin the soldier around and then apply the move. From there, Snake may continue with his "behind the enemy" CQC actions. B. KNOCK-OUT TAKEDOWN - This is similar to Snake's "backward throw" (See Section 3b) but instead, Snake will throw the enemy down to the ground extra hard so that he knocks the soldier out on the first try. To do this move, simply confront an enemy soldier and press towards him with the LEFT ANALOG STICK while pressing the CIRCLE button. NOTE: It should be noted that by doing this move, you automatically disable the enemy soldier's rifle so should he recover, he will no longer have his AK-47 rifle to attack you with. He will however, still have a pistol sidearm but if you do this move on him again, he will NOT lose his pistol. (TIP: Many people have complained that this technique is hard to do with the controller and instead of throwing the enemies down, Snake will instead punch them. This is due to the extremely pressure sensitive button controls. An easy alternative is to run straight at an enemy soldier and then press the circle button. For more information, please see Section 6.) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3d. CQC Counterattacks ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- One of the coolest CQC features in this game is to counterattack an enemy's CQC attack with your own CQC maneuver. This can be done during certain boss fights and will add a bit more style and drama to the battles. To counter an enemy's CQC attack, wait for an enemy to approach Snake and when a red exclamation mark "!" appears over Snake's head, press and hold the CIRCLE button and Snake will counter by blocking the enemy's attack. You may also use the LEFT ANALOG STICK and depending on the direction Snake is facing in the game and the direction you moved the LEFT ANALOG STICK, Snake will further counter the enemy in either one of several ways: A. Counter an enemy's attack and push them away. B. Counter an enemy's attack and strike back with your own attacks to stun them. C. Counter an enemy's attack, grab their wrist and "over-the-shoulder" Judo toss them onto the ground. D. Counter an enemy's attack and then backwards throw them into the ground. Sometimes an enemy's CQC attack may be so quick that the red exclamation mark will not appear over Snake's head. In this case, you will need to time Snake's counterattack perfectly with the enemy's attack. NOTE: Many people on the GameFAQs MGS3 message board have mentioned that you may also counter a boss' CQC attack by pressing the CIRCLE button when they attack and you hear Snake grunt. Another suggested method is to press CIRCLE button when an opponent grabs Snake's wrist/hand during CQC. At the time of writing, I have not tested these two methods out but because I have been receiving confirmation of this from other GameFAQs members, I am adding them to this FAQ. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. MGS3 CQC Weapons ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- CQC-CAPABLE: To introduce this new fighting system, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater also showcases a wide range of CQC-supported weapons that Snake can use in hand-to- hand combat. Here is a listing of these weapons: EZ Gun Survival Knife MK22/MK22-SP* 1911A/1911A-SP* Handkerchief Cig Spray Fork** *NOTE: The "SP" variation of this weapon is simply the suppressed or "silencer- equipped" version. These weapons may be equipped and used in CQC action and although most of these weapons include the same subdue and restraint action, some (such as the Chloroform Handkerchief) are used differently and include a different animation. **ANOTHER NOTE: I've received many emails from people stating that the fork is NOT a CQC weapon. For the record, the fork is listed in the game manual as a CQC weapon and indeed CQC capable. However, it should be noted that the fork does not become CQC "enabled" until AFTER you meet a certain someone behind a waterfall half way through the game. NON CQC-CAPABLE: Although the following weapons do have melee striking attacks, they are not CQC- capable and therefore not considered CQC weapons: XM16E1/XM16E1-SP M63 M37 Scorpion AK-47 Patriot SAA Torch The following weapons do not have melee striking attacks but they can be equipped during basic punching combinations. This can be really handy when you're surrounded by enemy soldiers and need to get out of a jam fast. (TIP: Rather than combating each individual soldier in an ambush, you can easily toss a stun grenade or detonate some nearby TNT to distract them.) Stun Grenade Grenade Smoke Grenade WP Grenade Chaff Grenade Claymore TNT C3 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. MGS3 CQC and Camouflage ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- CQC can be performed while wearing any type of military camouflage in this game. However, any disguises in this game that disables Snake's weapons also disable his CQC actions. As a result, Snake cannot CQC someone while in disguise. At the time of writing, downloadable camouflage and outfits for this game have not been tested for CQC capability. Facepaints and specialty masks do not conflict with Snake's CQC abilities. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. MGS3: Subsistence Additions ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- To be announced. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. CQC Troubleshooting FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: I just tried to choke and interrogate an enemy soldier but for some reason, Snake always end up slitting the soldier's throat. This keeps happening... am I doing something wrong? A: Don't press the CIRCLE button too tightly. Remember that the Playstation 2 controllers are pressure-sensitive so if you press and hold the CIRCLE button to choke an enemy soldier but accidentally add additional pressure to the button, the game will interpret that as a second button depress and react accordingly. --- Q: Is it possible to CQC an enemy soldier and Judo toss him as shown in the game trailers and title screen? A: No. Although you can arm-toss an opponent with the in-game CQC, you cannot use that specific Judo toss. --- Q: At what points in the game can I use CQC to counter attacks? A: You can use CQC to counter attacks during some of the boss fights against characters who has striking attacks in this game. I'll refrain from posting spoilers so you should just experiment with the boss battles and find out for yourself. Just remember that if a boss character likes to attack you with close- range hand attacks, you can most likely CQC counter them. --- Q: I just tried to "knock-out throw" a soldier but instead, Snake just punches him and then turns away. What's going on? A: The buttons on the PS2/PSTwo controller are pressure sensitive for this game so try not to do moves too quickly because the controller will react accordingly. If you tried to do a knock-out throw but Snake punches the soldier and looks away it means that you're pulling away on the LEFT ANALOG STICK when you press the CIRCLE button. My best advice is that you practice this throw maneuver or as an alternative, simply run straight at an enemy soldier and press the CIRCLE button when you're close to him. --- Q: I want to learn CQC! Can I learn this at a martial arts school? What about buying CQC textbooks/reference books? A: CQC is a military teaching with extremely lethal techniques which is why it's hard to find a place - outside of a military or police institution - that would know or even teach CQC to anybody. If you would like to learn martial arts similar to CQC, then I would recommend Judo for throw techniques and Jujitsu for self-defence grappling and counter-attacks. For books, there are textbooks about CQC but any techniques that are discussed in these books should be considered strictly for reference and educational purposes only. Reading a CQC book over and over again will not make you a CQC master so please don't think you can take on just about anybody after reading a textbook as it takes years and years of physical training and practice. William Fairbain's books: "Scientific Self-Defence" and "Get Tough!" are now out of print and only available for reference within law enforcement and military institutions but there are a number of CQC related books available for purchase to the public. Check your local bookstore or an Internet-based bookstore for more information. Also, according to Ethereal Raven (aka Dark Avatar) and VoodooandCoffee from the GameFAQs message forums, the book series "The Art of Metal Gear Solid" also contains descriptions of combat techniques featured in the game(s). --- Q: Umm... who are you and why do you know so much about the history of CQC? Are you in the military? A: This really isn't related to the game but I'll answer it anyways because I've been receiving a fair bit of emails about this. First of all, I am not in the military and have never served in any branch of military. The reason why I know so much about the history of CQC is because I studied it... when I became a self-defence instructor. I am currently 28 years old, reside in Canada (Toronto, Ontario) and have over 18 years of martial arts experience. My first study of martial arts was Chinese Siu Lum Gung Fu but now, I specialize in "Modern" Okinawan Kobujutsu and Filipino Balisong relating to "urban self- defence". I have been an avid balisong collector and practitioner for the past 10 years and in 2004, started the web-based community "Balisong-Canada" strictly for Canadians interested in the art of Balisong. In 2005, I founded the exclusive school "The Balisong Academy" here in Toronto which allows veteran martial arts students to further study close-range self-defence techniques. --- Q: Just out of curiosity, but in the February 2006 issue of "Official Playstation Magazine" (OPM), there's a letter to the Editor (page 17) and the writer's alias is the same as your GameFAQs ID. Is that you??? A: Yes, that's me. I'm an avid reader of OPM and wrote that letter in December 2005 in celebration of OPM reaching 100 issues. To my surprise, my letter was actually printed in Issue 101 in its entirety. I'm very happy to have had my letter printed and be a part of OPM history. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8.
