-----------------
I. Introduction
-----------------

Kuon had its North American release on December 7, 2004. Unfortunately, this
game was very low on the radar, and mediocre reviews just added to the problem.
It does have its flaws but the atmosphere makes up for most of it, and I would
not hesitate to say that someone who is a hardcore horror fan should happily
add this to their collection if they can find it.

I do apologize for repeating some information; however, since you can choose
either the Yin or Yang phase when starting out, and much of the phases overlap,
I chose to do it this way rather than Refer to the Yin Phase walkthrough or
vice versa.

As for the legal stuff

This FAQ is copyright 2005 Danyal Vierheller (siara79). If you feel the need
to post this on a website, it shouldnt be a problem as long as you notify me
and give proper credit. If you dont do that, Ill be severely annoyed. If
you have any questions you can contact me at [email protected]. All characters
and situations are copyright 2004 Agetec/From Software.

Anyone who submits information should be credited properly in the "Usual
Ending Stuff" Thanks section or listed with the information. If you gave me
info and for some reason don't see a credit, let me know.

-----------
II. Story
-----------

The whole game revolves around the strange events at a medieval Japanese manor
and the nearby shrine.

Yin Phase revolves around a sheltered girl named Utsuki. Her father is a
civilian exorcist who has been summoned to investigate the manor. When he does
not return, she and her sister travel to the manor in search of him. At the
manor, eerie hymns put her sister into a trance, and she vanishes into the
gloom. Utsuki must now find both her father and her sister.

Yang Phase revolves around Sakuya, exorcist-in-training under Utsuki's father.
She and her fellow students have been sent to investigate the strange
happenings at the manor.

The third phase, Kuon, is unlockable after defeating the first two phases. I
will not say much more in this section of the walkthrough other than it is the
final showdown, so the story of this section is self-explanatory.

-----------------
III. Characters
-----------------

Utsuki Playable character, Yin Phase. She is Doman's daughter and appears
at the outset to be his favorite.
Kureha Utsukis sister. She was injured in an accident for which her sister
feels responsible. She has some sort of strange illness.
Doman Once a noted exorcist, after his banishment from the Emperors court he
continues to practice the art as a civilian. There are hints of a darker side
to him, though..
Sakuya Domans only female disciple. She, along with her brother Doryo,
studies the ancient art of exorcism. She has accepted Doman as a mentor
because he is the only one who does not look down on her for being a woman.
Dokai One of Domans disciples. He is very meticulous and takes notes about
everything.
Dochin The youngest of Domans disciples. He is not very strong but he is
very responsible.
Doryo Sakuyas older brother. He is very conscientious but quiet, which has
caused him problems in the past.
Lord Fujiwara Lord of the manor. He summons Doman to exorcise the demons he
believes are infesting his manor, but he has disappeared.
Lady Fujiwara Lady of the manor. She has a kind heart, and when a strange
sickness begins spreading throughout the people of the manor, she tends them
herself at the temple.
Ayako Lord & Lady Fujiwaras daughter. She guards part of the key to the
shrine as per her mothers instructions.

---------------
IV. Yin Phase
----------------

Utsuki Chapter of Shadow
Starting Inventory: Dust x 2, Vessel x 2, Sacred Cloth: Earth, Domans Note,
Guardian Knife

Utsuki begins in the circular section of Garden: West. A Dust x 1 sits by the
corpse at the bottom of the screen, then take the path until you have your
first experience with a Tempest as the stone pagoda falls over. Kureha appears
briefly on the other side of the fallen pagoda, and checking the pagoda again
after she vanishes gives you the hint that you must find another way around.
Follow the right-hand path to get to Garden: Tree. The Silkworm Disk is next
to the body to the left of the tree. Walk toward the save point and note the
glint on the ground behind you. Upon returning to the spot where the body was,
you discover its been dragged to the water, leaving a Demon Suppressing Spike
behind. Pick the spike up and save your game.

If you try to continue to the right, something pounds on the door and makes it
impassable. The door down the stairs wont open at this stage of the game, so
go back to the left. You can see the round section you started in, and a gaki
is chewing on the corpse there. Keep following the path and inspect the small
statue by the bridge. Pick up the Manor Map and the Scroll: Survival 1, and
the Jizo statues head falls off.

The sound attracts the gaki, who jumps over and attacks you. Defeat it and
cross the bridge to the Spring. As you enter the area, a set of twins giggle
and run off. (If you watched the opening sequence, you recognize them from
there.) Continue through the Spring to reach the Small Shrine.

Upon entering the Small Shrine, the same eerie singing from the beginning fills
the area. There are three paths to take. Take the center stone path to find
the twins in front of the Temple door. They stop singing to gleefully inform
you everyone is dead, then run away. Take the Lady Fujiwara Memorandum from
the door to the temple to see the twins running down the far left path.

Follow the deck to the right and go down the stairs. Approach the gap between
the spikes for the Purpled Covered Book to fall down from above. Try to pick
the book up and the body of the author will fall on your head. Pick up the
book, then climb the stairs again. Go all the way to the left to fight a gaki
and find a door blocked by Seal: Venus. Go back down the stairs and take the
left path this time. Pick up the blood slick card Hibari x 9 from the right of
the save point. Inspect the small shrine to find out where the disks and
spikes are supposed to go.

Return to Manor: Tree to meet Sakuya (Yang Phase). You give her the Sacred
Cloth: Earth, and she gives you Hibari x 10, Sutegumo x 10, and Saiga x 2. Go
to the right to see that the doors to Garden: East are now open. Follow the
path through the doors to the right. When you try to open the doors to Manor:
Entry, a Tempest occurs, and a Yamabito walks through you. Try to open them
again to gain entry.

A gaki attacks immediately after you enter the area. Defeat it, then note the
small shrine locked with Seal: Mercury to your right. In the center is a
staircase blocked by rubble, so continue to the far left to reach Manor: Guard.

Kureha's Note is to the right of the door. Pick it up and follow the path to
the door blocked by Seal: Saturn. The deck to the left is blocked, so continue
up the stairs to the right. Make a left as soon as you can and enter the room
at the end of the deck. It is labeled 'West Guardhouse' on the map.

A Guardian Dog statue sits on the cart directly across from the door, and the
Scroll: Survival 2 and a Vessel x 1 are on the carts in the middle of the room.

At the rear of the room is the Seer's Symbol puzzle (aka the wheel puzzle). To
solve it, rotate each ring around and push X until you hear a deep "clunk"
sound instead of the normal "click". If it clicks, push the cancel button and
try the next one. Once all four rings are aligned, the mechanism deactivates
and you can enter the back room.

Two gaki are inside. Be cautious because the enclosed space makes it easy for
them to gang up on you. Once they're defeated, pick up the pliers from the
cart. Check the chests on the other side of the room for Dust x 1 (left chest)
and Sutegumo x 8 (right chest).

Exit the West Guardhouse completely, go back out to the main part of the deck,
and continue to the right. Follow it around then walk slightly north to reach
Ayako's Room (Manor: West).

Ayako is in her room, but when she sees you she scampers backward and runs into
her inner chambers to hide. Pick up Ayako's Letter for a clue - you have to
find a Bell to convince Ayako to open her locked door. A Hibari x 10 sits on
the left wall. Leave the lighted section of her quarters but don't exit to
Manor: Guard. To the right, the path is blocked by a partition, so go left. A
Tempest and a vision of someone walking away will tell you if you're going the
right way. In the middle of the room, another Tempest will occur, and slightly
beyond that a man in yellow with a purple aura walks away. Follow him around
the corner.

A small cutscene will occur and you will be able to inspect a hole in the wall.
Look through the hole and use the left thumbstick to look around the ENTIRE
room. To your right, Ayako stands behind the door she just locked with her back
to you. To your left, a woman in red slithers out from under the dresser, then
looks at you. You will step back from the hole. Look again to see a closeup
of the woman's eye. Utsuki confirms that the woman is Kureha, her sister.
Since the hole is blocked if you try to look again, continue around and take
the exit to Manor: Corridor.

Go slightly south and hit X to knock over some beams, opening up another access
to Ayako's Room. However, the noise also causes a Tempest and draws at least
one Ghost. Dispatch the Ghost and head north to open the left door to the
Servant's Housing. Collect the Servant's Memorandum from the floor.

When you attempt to exit the room, someone starts pounding on it. As soon as
you walk through the doors, two gaki will attack you. Dispatch them and move
on.

Bypass the door to the other half of the Servant's Housing since it is locked
with Seal: Venus. Continuing down, there is a door marked with a large Seal:
Earth. It has a note in blood next to it:

The seal must not be removed. The creature in there is not a gaki.

Continue following the path around until you see the stairway to Manor: Entry.
A gaki is chewing on the corpse there. Try to walk back to the left and the
gaki will knock the rubble out of the way and attack you. Once it is dead,
enter Manor: Main to reach the Lord's Suite. A Hibari x 12 is in the middle of
the room. Take the left door to reach a storage area off the suite. Pick up
the Green Bound Book then inspect the chair in the right rear corner of the
room. A body will fall off the chair and drop the Sacred Cloth: Mercury.

Exit the storage area. Continue to the right side of the Lord's Suite. Walk
to the bloody corner in the back of the room for a short cutscene, then use
your newly-acquired Sacred Cloth: Mercury to open the door to Manor: Garden.
(Note: If you run up the either side of the room, you will knock over a stack
of items and a couple of Ghosts attack.

Go north as soon as you enter the garden. There are two doors. One has a
Seal: Venus on it, the other is blood-soaked. Enter the blood-soaked door to
discover Doman stuffing something into a wicker chest. He gives you the
Sacred Cloth: Venus and sends you out to look for your sister. Use the Sacred
Cloth: Venus to unseal the door you passed a moment ago. Something is trapped
in the dresser inside. Open it and a mass of flesh called Ennyo falls on the
ground and attacks.

This creature hardly moves at all, but the angle makes it difficult to hit.
Run to the other side of the room and pelt it with magic to kill it. Then
collect the Elixir x 1 and Hibari x 9 from the dresser.

Exit and continue to the right. Take the first door past the bloody room to
reach the Manor: East bedroom. There is a door next to the bed that is locked
by a Zodiac Puzzle. Skip it for now, and continue down the hallway. You will
come out above a flight of stairs. Take the stairs and make a left. Crouch
under the decks in the Manor: Garden to reach the save point. When you leave
the save point, a ghost appears above you.

Return to the top of the stairs and continue to the right. Take the first
fork to the left to find a door with a Seal: Mercury. Use your Sacred Cloth
to open the door. Inside is another sealed door, this time with Seal: Earth, a
Vessel x 1, and the Silkworm Journal Vol. 1 near the rear of the room. After
you've collected everything, head back out and take the next left-hand fork.
The Manor: Quarters are at the end of the deck, sealed by Venus. Open the door
and go to the rear of the room. The Seer's Memorandum sparkles on the bloody
suit of armor, and the Metal Spike is in the wooden pillar nearby.

Use the pliers to remove the spike, and a gaki will fall from the ceiling. Kill
it and collect the spike.

Walk back out and Kureha will be dragging something in the opposite direction.
Follow the bloody trail and look through the door. Check the hole in the floor
for a Tempest, then go back to the right to the Manor: Spring. When the deck
splits, take the door to Manor: Carriage. A gaki attacks when you enter, and a
Tsuchi Jogo x 4 and a Sutegumo x 6 are in the room actually marked Carriage on
the map.

Exit the carriage area and continue to the right to reach the Spring Pavillion.
A Guardian Dog statue is on the ground by the first body you see, as well as
the Sacred Cloth: Earth and a Dust x 1. Watch where you run, because knocking
over the trays of food will summon Ghosts.

Return to the Manor: East bedroom. On your way back from the Pavillion, make
a side trip to unseal the Earth door inside the room across from the Quarters.
(Check your map if you're confused.) A Hien x 6 and a Vessel x 1 are inside.

Once you reach the bedroom, pick up the Hibari x 9 from the gore-soaked bed,
then inspect the Zodiac Puzzle to open the door.

** NOTE ** You can do this part now, or wait until you find the clue scroll,
its up to you, but I tend to just get it out of the way as Im going along.

The puzzle is fairly simple to solve. Push the middle button on the side once.
Push the second button on the top once. Push the fourth button on the top
once. Voila. Its done.

The final arrangement should be:

Rooster Dog Pig Rat
Dragon Rabbit Tiger Bull
Snake Horse Sheep Monkey

COllect the Vessel x 1 and use the two Guardian Dog statues on the plinths by
the altar. The altar opens to reveal the Old Disk and the Big Dipper Map. When
you come out, follow the bloody trail through the open door and back around to
the Lord's Suite. GO through the Lord's Suite and out to the Manor: Entry.

Take a right and inspect the small shrine with the Seal: Mercury. Pick up the
Crow Disk and the Hibari x 10, then take the left path to Manor: Guard. The
left path, which was previously blocked by items, is now open. If you run by
the stacked obstacles, you'll knock some of them over and Ghost x 2 will
appear.

This side leads to Manor: Fish Hut. There is only one way open - continue
straight across from the entryway. Utsuki will fall through the floor, and the
two Yamabito will get up and attack. After they are defeated, make your way
around the Pavillion and collect a Hibari x 10, Vessel x 1, and Elixir x 1.

On your way around, you'll notice a twinkle off to the far right. GO down the
stairs to the beach. Head to the left first to reach a save point, then walk
to the right. As you approach the partitioned area, a woman in yellow slithers
away and a man in yellow attacks. He's extremely fast and fairly strong, so
stay back and pelt him with magic to take care of him quickly. Once he is
dispatched, check the partitioned area for Fumon x 2 and the Constellation Map.

Return to Manor: Corridor and use the Sacred Cloth: Venus on the sealed side of
the Servant's Housing. Collect the Tsuchi Jogo x 2 and the Chinese Zodiac
Scroll. Exit the room and used your newly-acquired Sacred Cloth: Earth on the
door that has "The creature in here is not a gaki" next to it. This opens up
the rear section of the Lord's Suite. Follow the corridor to the right until
a gaki knocks the north wall out. Kill it and go through the new doorway.
Another gaki will attack from the right. Once it's done, go through the
door to the North Pavillion.

The first door you encounter contains a wicker chest with some silk clinging to
it. Inspect the chest and a gaki will attack from behind. Defeat it and move
on to the next room. Unseal the door with the Sacred Cloth: Venus.

When you enter the room you will hear a bell ringing. In the middle of the
room, you will be hit by a Tempest. BE SURE TO MEDITATE AND HEAL BEFORE
APPROACHING THE BELL.

Walk towards the bell and Lord Fujiwara, now a horribly deformed monster,
attacks! He is extremely fast, so I recommend staying back and pelting him
with magic. When you hit him, he falls flat on the ground. At that point,
until he gets back up, he cannot be hit.

If he grabs you check your health immediately. Dont stop using your magic and
he should be easily defeated.  Another helpful spell is the Saiga summon;
however you have to decide how to ration those two cards. After the battle,
check the corpse if you feel like it then go collect the bell. The blockage is
gone from the door, so when you get close enough you are automatically taken
outside the room.

Return through the Lords Suite. Now "This is where I died" is written on
the wall in blood. You will be attacked by a Yamabito; defeat it then return
to Ayako's ROom via Manor: Corridor.

On the way there, note the blood by the Servant Housing.  The door is open;
enter to find a gaki's body. When you exit the room, the Disciple you fought
on the beach earlier runs at you from the right. Get away from him and use a
similar strategy as what you used on the beach. Pelt with magic, avoid him,
repeat until he dies, then move on.

Once you reach Ayakos Room, stand directly in front of the doors and use the
Bell to convince Ayako to open the door. A short cutscene where the girls
discuss the evil aura around the mansion occurs, followed by Ayakos abduction.
Search the room after the scene ends to collect the Silkworm Journal Vol. 2
from the pallet, and the Metal Spike and a Dust x 1 from the cart.

Now you have all the disks and spikes. Head back towards the small shrine,
saving at the Manor: Tree site before continuing on. Once you reach the
Spring, you have an option to fight some extremely strong enemies. Inspect the
bloody trail at the water's edge to see a short cutscene, then try to walk
away. Three Mizuhiki attack. If you choose to fight then, DO NOT let the
three of them gang up on you. Stay out of range of their splashing and gas
attacks, and pelt them with magic. Once they are dead, or if you have bypassed
this battle completely, continue to the right and to the Small Shrine.

Take the center path again and climb the stairs. Go to the left side of the
deck and unseal the door blocked by Seal: Venus. Pick up the Tsuchi Jogo x 4
and the Shrine Entrance Guide, then take the left path once again.

Operate the device on the small shrine. The Silkworm Disk goes in the top
hole, the Crow Disk goes in the lower right hole, and the Old Disk goes in the
lower left hole. The doors open, and you can take the ladder to Shrine:
Cellar. A Hibari x 10 is on the ground near the ladder.

Follow the passage to its end and climb the rope to Temple: North. Pick up
the Temple Map from the floor and go through the door. There is a large hole
in the floor; when you try to go around the Yamabito grab you and cause a
Tempest. Meditate to restore your health after you get away and go through
the door to Temple: South. To the right, a bloody cocoon blocks the way, so
take the left door.

Follow the path around to the Library, which has a large Seal: Earth on it.
Open the door and collect the Scroll: Exorcism and the Priest's Journal Vol. 1
from the shelves, and the Winter Blade from the open box. When you try to
leave you see the twins running away through the lattice. Exit and follow them.
A Tempest just outside will summon a Ghost, but continue on to see the twins
chanting outside of the Study door.

Inside the study, a cutscene will show the source of the chanting voice you've
heard. The Temple priest is infected and dying, and as he warns you away
from the Temple and the manor, one of the Yamabitos kill him. After that
scene, pick up the medicine jar from the ground next to the priest's body and
return to the Temple: South. The cocoon blocking your way before is now ready
to hatch. A gaki pops out. After it's dead, continue to the right and take
the first door. A Vessel x 1 is in the room, and a cutscene of someone
running frantically through the sick in the Temple occurs. Exit the room and
go down the stairs to see Kureha dragging a wicker chest towards the Main Hall.

At the bottom of the stairs a Tempest occurs and the twins appear to block the
path back. Go through the door directly across from the stairs first to pick
up Yakushi's Legend, Priest's Journal Vol. 2, and a Hien x 6. The left door
leads to a save point.

Exit the room and go to the left. The door to the Main Hall is now open.
Collect the Sutegumo x 6 on the left side of the room, then climb the stairs to
the altar. Use the Medicine Jar on the Yakushi Statue, and a passage to the
Main Cellar opens.

In the Main Cellar, check the gate on the left for Sacred Cloth: Mars. Kureha
will wander away behind you - follow her. Past the bridge just slightly,
the corpse of an astrologer is surrounded by several items. Pick up the
Silkworm Journal Vol. 3 and the Elixir x 1. The end of the passage is blocked
with a Seal: Saturn. Turn around and head back out.

When you reach the bridge, an Adamushi falls from the ceiling and attacks. The
easy way to dispose of him is to drop a Tsuchi Jogo in front of him and wait
for him to walk into it. Otherwise, pelt him with magic from a distance.

Exit to the Main Hall of the Temple, and when you try to leave a cutscene is
triggered. Utsuki wakes up in a wicker chest in Underground: NE immediately
afterwards.

Check the cart across from the save point for a Tsuchi Jogo x 4, a Hibari x 10,
and a Vessel x 1. Save and take the passage south. Near the end of the
passage a Tempest will occur and a Yamabito and the same Disciple you've fought
twice already will be wandering around the cavern. The passage south is
blocked by silk threads, so defeat the Yamabito and Disciple and inspect the
other two passages.

The passage to the far left contains a Reiko x 3, Elixir x 1, and a Vessel x 1.
The center passage has a green partition - check behind the partition for a
corpse with a scythe embedded in it. Collect the scythe and use it to cut the
silk blocking the south passage.

That passage takes you to the Nursery, where Doman is overseeing a cocoon. He
tells Utsuki to get back in the chest, and takes the left passage. Check the
room to find Sutegumo x 8, Kugutsu Onna x 4, and Dust x 2 on the bottom cart
and Vessel x 1 and Underground Map on the upper cart.

FOllow Doman and peer through the crevice to see Kureha throw someone down on a
chest. Return to the Nursery to see Kureha break a cocoon and open a passage.
Follow her. An Adamushi will attack, then you will enter a room with many
corpses hanging from the ceiling. The door is blocked by Seal: Uranus, so go
speak to the twins. Follow them to the Nursery and walk to the very back of
the room to find Kureha and what appears to be Utsuki's bodies on a wicker
chest. The twins convince Utsuki to enter the chest with Kureha.

Utsuki wakes up in Shrine: Torii. Check the wicker chest to the right of the
bridge for Sacred Cloth: Neptune. (Note: This is not a vital cloth but it
does open up a minigame for you.)

Climb the rope ladder to Shrine: Garden. Two gaki will attack immediately.
The right path leads to the floodgate, but nothing is there. The left path
leads to a save point and another set of doors.

Go through the doors to Shrine: Storage. Climb the stones to reach the shed.
At the top of the path, a Yamabito paces back and forth.

The Sacred Cloth: Neptune will allow entry to the first door. Inside, there is
a sick man who says he is allowed to live because he produces cocoons. Pick
up the Decorated Diary from the cart, and the Fudobaku from the cart upstairs.
Also, look under the second cart for the Sugoroku Pieces. They are hard to see
(look behind the hanging body to see them) but they are half of what's needed
to open the Sugoroku Mini-Game.

Exit that room and take the other shed door. Two Yamabito are hovering over
something on the raised platform, but they don't attack until you approach. On
the cart on the ground, a Vessel x 2 and Hibari x 9 wait for you. When you
climb on to the raised platform, an Elixir x 1 and Scroll: Silkworm Shrine sit
on the carts.

Exit the shed and climb back down the stones. Continue slightly right and
cross the bridge. A Tempest will summon two ghosts in the storage area. An
Elixir x 1 and Dust x 2 are on the cart above the jars, and the Shrine Map is
hanging on the wall in the back.

The hole in the wall is blocked by lumber, so take the door into Utsuki's Room.
Pick up the Vessel x 1 and Dust x 2. Follow the passage and pick up the
Elegant Diary laying behind the partition.

A man in yellow is walking along the corridor. Follow him to a room with a
ruptured cocoon and a trail of blood. Pick up the Vessel x 3 and follow the
blood out to Utsuki's Entry. Cross the bridge and climb the rocks to get to
Shrine: Hall.

Explore the hall. All doors except the entry and the doors in the middle of
the room (I call this section the Inner Sanctum) are blocked or sealed at this
point, so take the doors to the Inner Sanctum. Collect the Summer Blade,
Doman's Book Vol. 1, Kugutsu Onna x 4, and Hien x 12. The man in yellow is in
here too, and when you approach him he runs away, screaming "I don't want to
die!"

Follow him back out and see him run away outside. Return to Utsuki's Room.
Upon passing the door with the gaki pinned on it, that door will fall over and
block your passage back. Continue back out to Shrine: Storage. Walk towards
the back wall for the man in yellow, Dokai, to finally attack!

He mostly stays back and throws Hibari at you. Dodge the Hibari and follow up
with some heavy magic of your own. If you have a Saiga summon left, this is a
good time to use it. He's a pain, but with practice his fire arrows become
easier to dodge. Once he is dead, check his corpse for the Sacred Cloth:
Uranus.

Climb through the hole in the wall that was previously blocked by lumber to
enter another part of Utsuki's Room. This room has several blood-soaked chests
and the vertigo effect. Pick up Kureha's Diary from the table at the back of
the room. Once you read through it, a cutscene occurs where Utsuki writes
something in the diary. Check it again once the cutscene is finished for a
chilling addition to the last page...

Pick up the Mari x 4 on the floor, then go back out to Utsuki's Entry.
Continue until you reach the shrine then unseal the Uranus-blocked door within.
Go through the door to Shrine: Entry. A gaki will attack, then continue down
the stairs and cross the bridge to Shrine: Tree. The twins are there, although
one of them seems to be dead. The surviving twin tells you to go to the
Mulberry Tree.

Utsuki remembers that this is where the accident happened, and dives off the
cliff. She lands safely in Underground: Cliff.

Take the north path (past the small shrine) to Underground: NW. Save, then
pick up the Iron Wedge x 2, Hien x 12, and Vessel x 1 from the cart to the
left. The wall by the cart appears to be cracked; use the Iron Wedge on it to
open a passage. Moving south along the passage, youll encounter a Yamabito.
Defeat it then take the right-hand path to find a Kugutsu Onna x 4 at the dead
end. Backtrack then head south into the Nursery.

Open the wicker chest at the bottom of the screen for Dust x 2 and the note
that A tool was obtained from the chest. Take the left fork to enter the
Dream chamber with two Adamushi. If possible, drop a Tsuchi Jogo summon in
front of one of them. That should take it out easily and allow you to
concentrate your attacks on the other one. DO NOT LET THEM CORNER YOU. Since
they will double team you, they only need to attack you 4-5 times and youre
toast.

After the Adamushi are dead, exit through the other set of doors. Inspect
the bloody water and the tainted vessels twice then inspect the wall beside
the water. A Tempest will occur then a voice will say I mightve been killed
right here. This opens the way for a cacophony of voices most notably
Utsuki yelling, Kureha, stop! and the twins saying Theyre all dead. Wont
you play with us? Avoid the pool of blood in the center of the room. If you
step in it, you will be sucked in and it's Game Over. Check the wall on the
lower right side of the dream chamber to discover its weak; use the Iron Wedge
to break it.

Walk down the short corridor and use the bridge to enter the nursery. The twins
are beside a chest, and the surviving twin explains to you that a new life is
about to emerge. Continue to the south and use the Sacred Cloth: Uranus to
access Underground: SW. Immediately another Adamushi attacks, and another
emerges when you attempt to check the chests scattered around the room. Defeat
them both and continue south.

Enter the door of the underground structure and kill the Yamabito inside. Pick
up the Elixir and the Vessel x 1. Note the door locked with Seal: Jupiter,
and go through the open door to the Library. The door to the right of the
entrance wont budge; walk to the back of the room and pick up Domans Book
Vol. 5 and Sacred Cloth: Jupiter. A cutscene is triggered in which Doman tells
Utsuki that the twins killed Kureha and put her in the chest, then tells her to
give in to her urges and merge with someone else.

Return to the underground structure and use the Sacred Cloth: Jupiter on the
sealed door inside. The back room has several puppets and the collectible
items Crumpled Note Doman and Kugutso Onna x 4.

Return to the chamber with the chests where you fought the Adamushi. Use the
Sacred Cloth: Jupiter to open the right-hand door to the Main Cellar. Once
inside the Main Cellar, walk to where the twin is sitting to trigger a
cutscene in which Utsuki tries to merge with Sakuya

CONGRATULATIONS. You have finished Yin Phase.

---------------
V. Yang Phase
---------------

Sakuya Chapter of Light
Starting Inventory: Dust x 2, Vessel x 2, Spell Card: Hibari x 24, Summon:
Sutegumo x 6, Domans Fan

The Yang Phase begins with Sakuya and Dochin inside the Carriage area of the
Lords Manor. Follow the stone path to the room marked Carriage on your map
and inspect the shining purple dots to collect the Spell Card: Hien x 12 and
the Survival Scroll 1. Walk to the left side of the room for this phases
Tempest explanation. A corpse falls over in the shadows, and a gaki climbs out
from under a set of drapes to attack you. Defeat the gaki and pick up the
Sutegumo x 6 on the ground. Walk back out of this area and go through the open
doors to your left. This will take you to Manor: Spring.

Climb the stairs to the right upon exiting the Carriage area. On the wall,
there is something written in blood: The flute makes beautiful sounds. La,
la La. Hm-hmmmm, hmm. Directly across from the writing is a Hibari x 9.

Continue to the right and climb the short staircase into the Spring Pavillion.
Inspect the servants body for a Guardian Dog statue and a Scrap Cloth writing.
To the right of the body there is a Dust x 1 on a small table. Walk around the
pavilion to be sure you got everything, then head back to the left.

Follow the trail of blood from the Carriage doors down to the Spring and
inspect where it ends. Walk back to the carriage house doors to be attacked
by a Misuhiki. Remember to be careful of its splash and gas attacks kill it
from a distance with magic if possible. Once youve defeated it, continue
along the wooden deck to the left. This leads to Manor: East.

Passing the area that looks like it has giant claw marks on the wall, turn the
corner to the right immediately. Written in blood on the wall is My blood, my
blood! What fun, what fun! Continue along the deck until you see the sealed
door. Make note of the Seal: Venus on the door and backtrack until you can go
left again.

A short cut scene will trigger where Sakuyas brother explains how to break
seals by using the Sacred Cloth: Mercury on the door to remove the seal. He
then gives the cloth to Sakuya. Follow him into the Manor: Quarters.

Upon entering the quarters, make note of the door to the left that has the
large Seal: Earth on it. A shelf containing a shining Vessel x 1 sits to the
right. The shelf next to it holds the Manor Map (may not be immediately
noticeable; just push the X button until you pick it up). Right next to the
Manor Map is Survival Scroll 2. Talk to Doryo and he will tell you to go on
and look for more clues.

Exit the Quarters. As you walk back out you see something slither away on the
roof. Continue to the left to see a set of eerie twins run to the left. Walk
down the steps and follow them. Keep following them to the left until you get
a short tutorial on crouching, and crawl under the walkway. This is the first
save point; Doachin gives you a short explanation of the Cleansing Ritual
(saving process) and then you can save if you have a Vessel.

Try to exit the area and a short cutscene shows the twins on the walkway above,
pointing at a bloody door. Crawl out of the area to fight a Yamabito, then
continue to the right. Return to Manor: East by taking the stairway. Slightly
to the right there is a blood-soaked corridor that you passed while chasing the
twins. A Tempest will hit and a Ghost will attack. Dispatch the Ghost with
one or two swipes of your fan and continue along the corridor until you reach
the furniture blocking the way. Inspect the furniture to pick up a Spell Card:
Senin Sekka x 5. Return the way you came and you will fall through the floor.
Three Ghosts will attack but are easily dispatched.

Continue to the left. Dont worry about inspecting the bloody bed until later.
Pick up the shiny purple dot by the partition to receive another Senin Sekka
x 5. Another Ghost will attack.

The door on the left side of the bedroom is locked by the Zodiac Puzzle. (As in
the Yin phase, you can do this now or later, it's up to you.) To solve it, push
the middle button on the side once. Push the second button on the top once.
Push the fourth button on the top once. This will disable the device.

The final arrangement should be:

Rooster Dog Pig Rat
Dragon Rabbit Tiger Bull
Snake Horse Sheep Monkey

The room will unlock, granting you access to a Vessel x 1 and the Inspection
Report Vol. 1. Also note the small shrine on the left side of the room (right
as you enter). It has two plinths where something is kept. Return to the
bedroom and exit by the door nearest the partition. This leads to Manor:
Garden.

As you enter the Garden, you see the blood-soaked door the twins were pointing
at. Open the door and a cutscene showing a gaki bursting out of a chest occurs.
Kill it as soon as you regain control, then look around the room. (Nothing
really to be found, but if you inspect the chest there is a mutilated corpse
inside.) Try to exit the room to run into Dokai, who immediately inspects the
wicker chest and denies seeing who shut the door behind you.

Walk around the pavilion to the left. The first door to the left has a Seal:
Venus on it, and the next door wont open. As you continue around, Sakuya
notes that it looks like something has been dragged through recently. Follow
the trail of blood back to the source in the Manor: East bedroom to find that
the bed is open and can be inspected. Among the blood and gore pick up a
Hibari x 9, then follow the blood trail to the other end.

The seal has been removed on the door the trail ends at; continue through to
the Lords Suite. Make an immediate right and inspect the blood-spattered
walls in the rear right corner of the dark room for a short scene, then
continue left to the brightly-lit section of the Lords Suite. Pick up the
Hien x 6 from the middle of the floor and Fujiwaras Letter from the left rear
corner.

Take the door to the left to enter the Storage section of the Suite. Lots of
spiders are running around on the floor, you can squash them all day if you
like, for fun, but when youre ready to move on inspect the chair at the back
of the room. A body will topple over and drop the Sacred Cloth: Venus.

Exit the storage section. The hallway to the left is blocked so just go out
the doors to Manor: Corridor. The stairway leading down is blocked by rubble,
and the right side just leads to a dead end. Head to the left to end up on a
pavilion.

If you make a right and continue around the pavilion in that order:
The first door to your right is a door that wont open. The next door past
the bridge is sealed with Seal: Earth and has a note in blood next to it:
The seal must not be removed. The creature in there is not a gaki.
Continue on to find a Seal: Venus. Use the Sacred Cloth you collected in
the Lords Suite storage to open the door to the Servants Housing, right
side. Collect the Zodiac Hint scroll and the Hien x 6.

Exit and take the next door to find the left side of the Servants Housing.
Collect the Servants Memorandum from the lower left corner of the room to
trigger some loud banging on the door. Open the door to fight two gaki.
Head to your left to find another Seal: Earth, and continue to follow the
deck until you come up against the door with two wooden beams blocking it.
Push X to knock the beams over and attract two Ghosts. Take out the Ghosts
and use the Sacred Cloth: Venus to unseal the door you just unblocked.

Walk to the left to see a well lighted room. As soon as you enter, a girl in a
pastel kimono skitters into another room and shuts the door tight behind her.
Inspect the room to receive Hibari x 9 and Ayakos Letter. Nothing else of
importance is in this room, so continue to the left.

Another Tempest will occur and Sayuka has a vision of a man in a yellow kimono,
surrounded by darkness, wandering away. Follow him and a second Tempest and
sighting of the man will occur. Keep following the corridor and you will come
upon a small hole in the wall. A moth will flutter away when you walk by,
allowing you to peer inside the room. The girl you saw run away earlier is
cowering behind the locked door with her back to you.. and to the creature
crawling out from under her dresser. You will be knocked back; if you look
again, the creature is RIGHT THERE looking you in the eye. Try to look a third
time, and it says the hole is plugged.

Continue around the corridor to find another Seal: Earth, then return the way
you came. Right outside of the well-lit room, walk to the left again, but this
time stay to the outside of the divider to go to the Manor: Guard. Go to the
left to find Doachins Writings Volume 1 and a (clearly possessed) corpse lying
on something else. You cant get to it for now, so head back to the right and
to the West Guardhouse.

In the West Guardhouse there is a Vessel and the second Guardian Dog statue.
More knocking at the door draws your attention to the door at the back, which
is locked by what appears to be an impossible puzzle.

Once again, you can do this puzzle now or wait until you have found the clues.
Rotate each ring and push X until you hear the sound of something locking into
place (more of a clunk than a click), then go on to the next one. When
they are all lined up properly, the door will unlock. (If you're still
confused, check the Yin section for a slightly more detailed explanation.)

There are two gakis in the back room. There is not a lot of space, so dont
let them back you into a corner. Once youve finished them off, check the
chests against the back wall for Sutegumo x 6, Inspection Report Vol. 2, and
Dust x 1. Also, dont miss the pliers on the cart across from the door.

Return to the Manor: Garden section and remove the Seal: Venus from the door
you previously bypassed. This leads to the Closet and a rather annoying mini-
boss.

There is a cupboard in the room but something is obviously trapped inside of
it. When you open the doors, a mass of flesh called Ennyo falls at your feet
and begins to crawl toward you. Luckily it hardly moves, so stay back and
pummel it with magic (I found several Hibari spells did the trick rather
quickly). Hibari x 9 and an Elixir are your rewards for beating this thing.

Continue back to the Manor: East bedroom and enter the door with the Zodiac
lock. Use both Guardian Dog statues on the plinths to open the small altar.
Collect the Old Disk and the Big Dipper Map, then return to the Manor:
Corridor. A gaki is chewing on the corpse, just as Doachins writings
suggested. When you try to exit to the left, the gaki knocks the rubble out of
the way and attacks you. Kill it to clear your path to the Manor: Entry.

At the bottom of the stairs is Doachins Writings Vol. 2 and another gaki.
Take the left path first. You will find yourself on the other side of the
corpse you couldnt pass earlier. Continue up the stairs to the left to reach
the Fish Hut.

When you arrive at the Fish Hut, two Yamabito will attack. Once they are taken
care of, pick up a Senin Sekka x 5, Elixir and Vessel from the hut itself,
then take the stairs down to the beach. Go left to reach a save point; right
is a small area where one of the other disciples appears to be sitting with a
long-haired woman in yellow. The disciple is possessed and attacks when you
approach. The guy is fast so I recommend staying as far away as possible.
Defeat him and collect Fumon x 3 and the Constellation Map.

Exit the Fish Hut area. Go back to the corpse and inspect it from this side to
discover it has been pinned down. Remove the spike and collect the Iron
Wedge x 1, then defeat the Yamabito. Inspect the Seal: Saturn on the door
before you go. There are two writings on either side of the door. The left
side says, The mountain path Monkey see, monkey kill! The right side says,
The mountain path what goes up must come down.

Return to Manor: Entry and take the right path. Inspect the small shrine to
use Sacred Cloth: Mercury and retrieve the Crow Disk and Hibari x 9. Walk to
the door next to the shrine and use the iron wedge on the bar holding the door
shut to gain entry to Garden: East.

As you enter the walkway, you hear more banging. A gaki is pounding on the door
on the other side. Kill it (and its fun to kill since you can ambush it from
behind) then go through the door to reach Garden: Tree. As you walk toward the
save point, a cutscene of a girl in red (Utsuki) being attacked by a gaki
triggers, and then you must battle the gaki.

Once you have defeated it, pick up the Demon Suppressing Spike from the ground
near Utsuki, then speak to her to trigger a cutscene in which she gives you the
Sacred Cloth: Earth. Save then continue to the left. Inspect the small shrine
before the bridge to collect the Silkworm Disk, and cross the bridge to the
Spring. Cross the bridge there to reach the Small Shrine.

The left-hand path (with the pool of blood on it) takes you to the shrine. Next
to the save point a Hibari x 9 is on the ground. Speak to Doachin for his
musings about how to open the shrine, then backtrack and take the right-hand
path.

The twins chant in front of a barred door, and comment that everyone is dead
except Ayako. Collect the Lady Fujiwara Memorandum from the door behind the
twins, and turn left. At the end of the deck there is a door locked with Seal:
Earth. Use your newly-acquired cloth to open the door. A writing on the back
wall says I will die here. But I will not allow them to devour my flesh.
Search the room for a Hien x 6 and the Shrine Entrance Guide.

Exit the Small Shrine and return to Ayakos Room. Walk around the outside of
her room until you reach the door locked with Seal: Earth. Break the seal and
walk straight across the corridor to the other Earth-sealed door. (The one with
The creature in here is not a gaki next to it.) This opens up the north part
of the Lords Suite. Follow the corridor to the right side of the screen and a
gaki will pop out of the north wall. Kill it then go through the hole it left
to fight another gaki. Use the door at the far end of the corridor to reach
Manor: North.

Walk towards the bell and Lord Fujiwara, now a horribly deformed monster,
attacks! He is fast and can jump short distances, so I recommend staying back
and pelting him with magic. If he grabs you check your health immediately. He
is invulnerable for a second after each hit connects. Dont stop using your
magic and he should be easily defeated. After the battle, check the corpse if
you feel like it then go collect the bell. The blockage is gone from the door,
so when you get close enough you are automatically taken outside the room.

Return through the Lords Suite to Ayakos Room. You will be attacked by a
Ghost on the way out, but it should pose no real threat. Once you reach
Ayakos Room, stand directly in front of the doors and use the Bell to convince
Ayako to open the door. A short cutscene where the girls discuss the evil aura
around the mansion occurs, followed by Ayakos abduction. Search the room after
the scene ends to collect a Metal Spike and a Dust x 1.

Exit the room and head back to the Manor: Corridor to see a woman in red
(Kureha) walking the opposite direction. Continue going right, back through
Manor: East to the area where you received your Sacred Cloth: Mercury.

On the right side of the deck is the door with an Earth seal on it. Break the
seal to enter one of the Manor: Quarters. This room is covered in gore. Check
the back wall for a comment on the mess, then walk to the far left corner of
the room. The Seers Note is attached to the bloody suit of armor, and the
third Metal Spike is stuck in the nearby column. Use the Pliers to remove the
spike and a gaki will attack. Defeat it and pick up the spike, then exit the
room.

Walk around to the door directly across the other Manor: Quarters that Doryo
unsealed with the Mercury cloth. Open the Earth-sealed door inside for a Vessel
x 1 and Hien x 6.

Once you have all three spikes and all three disks, return to the Mulberry Tree
area. As you approach the save point, a short cutscene will trigger in which
Doryo says he has chosen to help Utsuki find her sister in the mansion, and
that Sakuya should visit Doachin at the shrine. Take his advice and return to
the shrine. Operate the device to open the door.

The Silkworm Disk goes in the top hole, the Crow Disk goes in the lower right
hole, and the Old Disk goes in the lower left hole to open the shrine. Descend
the ladder and pick up the Hibari x 9. Walk to the end of the corridor and
Doachin will climb the rocks and throw down a rope.

Climb up the rope to enter the Temple: North. Follow the corridor and go
through the door at the end. Collect the Temple Map from the silk in the corner
then continue south through the corridor. When you edge around the hole in the
floor, a Tempest will occur and the hands of the sick people will pull you
against the latticework. Struggle away immediately and meditate to recover any
damage taken. Go through the door at the end of the passage to get to Temple:
South.

A gaki attacks as soon as you go through the door. Once it is defeated, check
the door to the left to note that it is blocked by silk. Turn around and go
the other way. Enter the door at the other end of the corridor to get to
Temple: North. Collect Miyoshimarus Note 1, Kugutsu Onna x 4, and Vessel x 1.
Exit the small room and head south down the stairs.

The door directly across from the stairs contains Lady Fujiwaras Diary 1 and
Hien x 12. Exit through the opposite door to reach a save point, then go back
through the room and take a left down the corridor. Check the door to the Main
Hall to see that its got a Seal: Saturn on it, then walk back towards the
steps. You catch a glimpse of the twins running to the left follow them. The
door that was previously blocked by silk is now open, so go through it.

Head south to reach the Library door. A gaki attacks inside, and your prizes
after defeating it are the Inspection Report 3, Lady Fujiwaras Diary 2, and
Senin Sekka x 4. Try to leave the library to see the twins running away again.
Follow them to a door near the Study. When you enter the room, the source of
the strange chanting you hear throughout the Temple is now evident the Elder
Priest of the shrine is attempting to comfort the sick. Talk to him then return
to the Main Hall.

Someone has broken the seal, so go through the door. Collect a Sutegumo x 4
from the left side of the room and defeat the Ghost by it. Also inspect the
silk covered Buddha on the right side of the room for a Tempest and Ghost x 2
attack. When you are finished collecting everything, ascend the staircase and
look at the statue. The twins will put the medicine jar in the
statues hand and open up the path to the Main Cellar.

Cross the bridge and look around the corpse of the astrologer for the Sapphire
Fan and the Yellow Cloth Scrap. Equip the fan immediately; the boost in attack
and defense helps greatly with upcoming battles. Take note of the Seal: Saturn
on the door just past the astrologer, then..

Attempt to cross the bridge again and an Adamushi falls from above and attacks.
This creature is quick and powerful, so watch your health. After the battle,
cross the bridge and walk back towards the steps to trigger a cutscene where
Lady Fujiwara abducts and kills Doachin. Follow her back up the stairs and
approach her to trigger the second boss battle.

Lady Fujiwara is even faster than her husband, and she has a huge advantage in
that she transforms into something with a LONG neck. Which translates to, You
can run, but you cant hide. Running away from her and pelting her with spells
was difficult to do since she would just stretch out her neck and attack me so
I couldnt complete the spell. The most effective method in my opinion is to
stand next to the wicker chest and beat on her with the Sapphire Fan. When she
thrusts out her neck, it doesnt knock you back as far, and it doesnt seem to
do as much damage. Just watch your health carefully and she should go down in
no time.

Check the chest after the battle to get the Sacred Cloth: Saturn and Doachins
Writings 3. Now that you have the Saturn cloth, you can return to the Main
Cellar and open the door behind the astrologer to collect a Karyu x 4. The
next door is sealed with Seal: Jupiter, so go back out through the Temple
and return to the sealed door in Manor: West.

Use your Sacred Cloth: Saturn to open the way to Manor: Gate. Take the gate
to Path: South. On either side of the gate there is Dust x 2 and Vessel x 2.
Approach Utsuki, Kureha and Doryo for a short cutscene, then save and follow
the others to Path: Center.

Inspect the mummified corpse to see a mashira roar and run away, then pick up
the Elixir x 1 from the opposite side of the path. Continue forward to the
small shrine at the fork in the path and take the Traveler's Map from within.
The left path is blocked by yet another corpse, so continue right to Path:
North. Climb the rocks and save quickly. Kureha, now surrounded by that
familiar dark purple cloud, attacks you. She has a Yamabito with her. Run
past them and collect the Sen'in Sekka x 4 from the northwest corner (by the
fallen tree). Defeat the Yamabito and run back to the south, past Kureha. If
she grabs you just remember to heal before you reach Path: Center again.

A mashira, a raging ape, attacks you as soon as you re-enter the Path: Center
area. These things are EXTREMELY strong and EXTREMELY fast, so try to stay
back and if you can't be prepared to use several healing items. One hit from
these creatures will take you to yellow, and two is most likely death.

Defeat the mashira and walk towards the left. The corpse that used to block
that side of the path is now being dragged off by another mashira, who promptly
attacks you. Once it is dispatched, go through the doors to the Mountain Hut
area.

A cutscene where Utsuki tells you to go to the hut and collect a mallet occurs.
To reach the hut, climb the rocks off to the side and follow the path to the
hut. A Hibari x 18 is outside the hut to the right.

Peer through the window to see the giant Yeti pacing back and forth inside.
When it turns its back and leaves the hut through the left side, open the door
and run inside.

(IF YOU DO NOT TIME YOUR ENTRY CORRECTLY, IT MEANS INSTANT DEATH. The Yeti
grabs Sakuya by the head and smashes her down on the floor.)

A Hien x 6 and a Karyu x 4 are on the floor, and the mallet is
on the upper right corner of the screen. Don't go too far and don't attract
the Yeti's attention. Once you've collected the items, run back outside and
start back the way you came.

When you reach the large clearing just before the hut, the Yeti chases after
you and attacks! One hit from him will send you into the red, luckily he's
so large he tends to miss fairly often. Watch your health and pound him with
Karyu and Sen'in Sekka to knock this big ape down for good.

Return to Utsuki and use the mallet in front of where she's standing. She will
throw down the rope ladder. Climb the ladder to Shrine: Torii then follow her
up the winding stairs to reach Shrine: Tree. A short cutscene has Doryo
ordering you to exterminate the gaki that "followed" you to the shrine.

Before you run to the rescue, check behind the tree for a rope ladder.
Use the ladder to get to Shrine: Cliff. If you run, several Ghosts will attack
you, and in this quantity they can easily deplete your health, so be cautious.
On the left side of the Cliff area is another rope ladder and Miyoshimaru's
Note 2.

Climbing the second rope ladder leads to a dead end on the blocked off side of
Shrine: Torii, so return to Shrine: Tree. Take the right path to reach Shrine:
Entry. Climb the stairs and defeat the gaki along the way, then enter the
Shrine: Hall. The Shrine Map is hanging on the wall inside.

Take the left set of doors to reach Utsuki's Entry. Jump down the stones and
fight off the gaki, then cross the bridge to Utsuki's Room. A Vessel x 3 and
Dokai's Book Vol. 1 are in the first section of her rooms. In the next room,
Dokai's Book Vol. 3 can be found. Finally, enter the room marked Utsuki's Room
on the map. The door with the pinned gaki falls, blocking your exit. Pick up
Dokai's Book Vol. 2, a Vessel x 1, Dust x 1, the Sugoroku Board (half of what
you need to activate the Sugoroku mini-game), and Utsuki's Diary. Then exit
through the doors to Shrine: Storage.

An Elixir x 1 and Dust x 2 sit above the giant vases next to the door. Cross
the bridge and climb the stones to the shed. One of the doors is sealed with
Seal: Neptune (and can only be opened in Yin Phase). The other door has two
Yamabitos and the collectible items Scroll: Silkworm Shrine, Vessel x 2,
Hibari x 9, Elixir x 1, Onibi x 4.

Return to the doors to Utsuki's Room but instead of entering, continue to the
right until you see a large hole. Crouch and crawl through the hole to enter
a completely different section of Utsuki's Room. Pick up Kureha's Diary and
the Onibi x 4 from among the blood-stained chests. Dokai closes the door to
the left as you try to walk away, so follow him. In the passage Sakuya peers
through a window to see Kureha throw Utsuki off the cliff, with her brother
Doryo's body on the ground behind them!

Exit this section and return to Shrine: Hall. Dokai has sealed all the
other doors with Mars, and expresses his desire to merge with Sakuya. He is
still a "cheap" boss - he continuously shoots Hibari at you, unless you can
interrupt his spells with some powerful magic of your own. Counter with Karyu,
Sen'in Sekka, or Hien. If he manages to get a spell off, dodge it. Keep this
strategy up until he finally dies, then check the body for the Sacred Cloth:
Mars.

Use this cloth to dissolve the seal on the doors in the middle of the room
(the Inner Sanctum, if you will) and crawl through them to collect your final
weapon, the Ruby Fan, Hien x 18, Doman's Book Vol. 1, the Wooden Handle,
Doman's Memorandum, and Sen'in Sekka x 4.

Go back out and unseal the door to Shrine: Entry. Return to the Shrine: Tree
area through there, and follow the blood to the wicker chest. It has that
familiar dark purple aura, and when you check it, a half-merged Kureha and
Doryo attack.

NOTE: You can avoid this battle altogether. As soon as the boss appears,
leave the area. When the koto music stops, return to the clearing. The boss
will have disappeared and you can retrieve the Sacred Cloth: Uranus from the
wicker chest. When you continue back down the hallway, the boss will
reappear and come towards you. Run back to the chest, and when prompted, hide
inside it. The boss will circle around a few times (you can watch him from
inside the chest) and eventually leave. When it's gone, hop out and that's
the last you'll see of it.

If you choose to fight it:

This creature uses Tempests to throw you off balance every few rounds. The
strategy is similar to the ones on the other bosses, mainly stay back and use
your strongest spells, but be sure to check your health and also the creature's
position after each Tempest.

When you defeat it, it vanishes, leaving the Sacred Cloth: Uranus in the chest.
Use the new cloth to unseal the door to Shrine: Storage around the corner. A
Tempest will occur and two Ghosts will show up. After you defeat them, use your
Sacred Cloth on the door to Shrine: Garden.

Take the path to the floodgates (to Sakuya's left). Use the Wooden Handle to
drain the water, and Kureha will appear on the other side of the floodgates.
Turn around and check what appears to be the edge of the cliff for another
rope ladder, this one leading to the other side of Shrine: Torii. Walk out on
the dock and pick up the Truth Mirror from the pool, then defeat the two
Mizuhiki that appear and climb back up the ladder.

Kureha is waiting for you. Run past her and out the door to the Shrine:
Storage. Circle around and take the door back to Shrine: Tree. When you
approach the tree, Sakuya burns it down, then climbs down the ladder to Shrine:
Cliff. Walk to the left side of the area again to see Kureha throw the ladder
down on that side as well.

Put the Truth Mirror on the plinth of the altar to open the passage to
Underground: NW. A save point is here, along with a cart holding Onibi x 2,
Iron Wedge x 2, Underground Map, and Vessel x 1. The wall by the cart appears
to be cracked; use the Iron Wedge on it to open a passage. Moving south along
the passage, youll encounter a Yamabito. Defeat it then take the center path
to find Miyoshimaru's Note 3 behind the partition. On the right-hand path a
Kugutsu Onna x 4 waits at the dead end. Backtrack then head south into the
Nursery.

Open the wicker chest at the bottom of the screen for Dust x 2 and the note
that A tool was obtained from the chest. Take the left fork to enter the
Dream chamber with two Adamushi. As usual, a Tsuchi Jogo summon helps increase
your chances of survival.. and if you time it right, you can get them both with
one trap.

After the Adamushi are dead, exit through the other set of doors. Pick up
Miyoshimaru's Note 4 from next to the pool. Inspect the bloody water and the
tainted vessels twice then inspect the wall beside the water. A Tempest will
occur then a voice will say I mightve been killed right here. This opens
the way for a cacophony of voicesmost notably Utsuki yelling, Kureha, stop!
and the twins saying Theyre all dead. Wont you play with us? Avoid the
pool of blood in the center of the room. If you step in it, you will be sucked
in and it's Game Over. Check the wall on the lower right side of the dream
chamber to discover its weak; use the Iron Wedge to break it.

Walk down the short corridor and use the bridge to enter the nursery. Continue
to the south. Keep going until you come out in the room with the ruptured
cocoon. The far right passage leads to Underground: NE, but it's blocked by
silk. Search the chamber for Vessel x 1, Elixir x 1, Dust x 2, and Sutegumo x
9, then return through the original passage. Unseal the door with the Uranus
Seal on it and gain access to Underground: SW. Immediately another Adamushi
attacks, and another emerges when you attempt to check the chests scattered
around the room. Defeat them both and continue south.

When you approach the door of the underground structure, the surviving twin
threatens you. When the cutscene is finished, open the door. Pick up the
Elixir and the Vessel x 1. Note the door locked with Seal: Jupiter,
and go through the open door to the Library. The door to the right of the
entrance opens to a save point and a locked building; when you're ready, walk
to the back of the room and pick up Domans Book Vol. 5 and Sacred Cloth:
Jupiter. A cutscene is triggered in which Doman tells Sakuya that she and his
other students were merely fodder to complete the Kuon spell, the chest of the
nine grudges. Once you witness this scene, the right-hand door is no longer
accessible.

Return to the underground structure and use the Sacred Cloth: Jupiter on the
sealed door inside. The back room has several puppets and the collectible
items Crumpled Note Doman and Kugutsu Onna x 4.

Return to the chamber with the chests where you fought the Adamushi. Use the
Sacred Cloth: Jupiter to open the right-hand door to the Main Cellar. Once
inside the Main Cellar, the remaining twin sends Kureha after you. Run to the
opposite end. The door has a Seal: Saturn on it unless you unsealed it
earlier. Either way, go through the door and walk towards the bridge to
trigger a cutscene where Utsuki tries to merge with Sakuya..

CONGRATULATIONS. You have finished Yang Phase.

VI. Kuon Phase

Seimei
Starting Inventory: Dust x 7, Elixir x 3, Vessel x 3, Manor Map x 1, Spell
Card: Hien x 36, Spell Card: Karyu x 18, Summon: Zenki x 5, Summon: Goki x 5,
Ceremonial Spear

Abe no Seimei begins in the Carriage House (same starting point as Sakuya). On
the left side of the Carriage House a Senin Sekka x 5 sits in the same spot as
the Survival Scroll in Yang Phase. A Sutegumo x 6 is in its usual spot on the
other side of that room. Exit to the Manor: Spring.

Immediately a Mizuhiki attacks. Take him out. Since the path to the right is
blocked, head left. The standard paths through the manor are blocked by bodies
and debris, so keep going to Manor: East. The save in Manor: Garden is still
accessible. A gaki and an ennyo fight up above, but you can bypass them
completely if you wish. Return to Manor: East after saving. The Zodiac Puzzle
is broken, but there is a Hibari x 9 on the still bloody bed. To avoid the
ennyo and the gaki, exit through the door nearest the partition. To fight them,
exit through the bottom door. With Seimeis strength, it doesnt really matter.
The door next to the Closet holds another Ennyo in the cupboard. Four or five
attacks should kill it easily, then collect the Elixir x 1 and Hibari x 9 left
behind.

Continue to Manor: Main. Two Ennyos infest the Lords Suite. Once they are
dispatched, head to the Manor: Entry. Fight off the gaki then pick up the
Senin Sekka x 5 from the small shrine to the right. The only available path
is to Garden: East. The body that has been there through the two previous
phases is suddenly surrounded by a dark aura. Inspect it to be attacked by a
Yamabito. A second one attacks you near the exit to Garden: Tree.

At the tree, a short cutscene about sealing the tree occurs. Pick up Domans
Book #2 to the left of the save point, then go to the Small Shrine. A
blood-slick Hibari x 9 is in its usual place by the save point. Pick up the
Metal Spikes x 2 from in front of the door to the small shrine. The Seal: Earth
is back on the door on the shrine. With nothing else to do here, return to the
tree.

A short cutscene shows Sakuya finally reaching Seimei. Immediately afterwards,
Seimei transmits to Domans Lab. Go through the Lab to the Nursery to find that
all the hanging corpses are suddenly on fire. Talk to Utsuki, who says she has
burned them to escape the craving for flesh and blood.

Walk to the middle of the room to collect Domans Book #4 from in between the
chests. Take the bridge back to the Dream Chamber. The door in the grate is
finally open, so go through it to the Underground: SW. Go through the door
there to claim 9 more Demon Suppressing Spikes off the cart in the back of the
room.

When you return to the Dream Chamber, two Adamushi are there. Fight them off
and return to the Lab via the Nursery.

You can also visit the southern part of the Nursery for the usual goodies-the
Underground Map, Vessel x 1 and Elixir x 1. (This is the room with the
ruptured cocoon.) It's not necessary, but may be useful.

When you are ready, enter the Lab. Doman attacks Seimei in a rage, and the
final battle begins!

===================
FINAL BOSS: DOMAN
===================

Doman commands some powerful attacks, so as always, its better to stay as far
away from him as possible. He usually has either a series of flaming missiles
that scatter across the screen, or a big pool of dark energy that attacks
everything in its path.

I recommend summoning Goki or Zenki and allowing him to serve as a shield.
Goki will keep you from taking damage as long as you have him on at all times,
while Zenki will draw Doman's fire for you.

Occasionally, Doman will block your spells. Just keep casting them as
quickly as you can and eventually they will get through. There is no real way
to tell when he puts the shield up, and when he drops it. Sometimes, he will
be surrounded by a reddish aura. That is usually your cue to run away from
him because he's ready to attack you again. (I didn't notice any pattern
to what spells he casts afterwards - one time he put up his shield, once it
was the flaming missiles, and once it was the dark energy.)

When Doman stops, run to the other side of the Lab as quickly as possible.
Hes about ready to attack with dark energy, and you need to get out of range
quickly. Watch your health and keep hammering with your most powerful spells
(I prefer Karyu because it seeks out its target, and its very powerful to
boot). Keep summoning your chosen creature until youve either used all of
them or the battle ends he makes a wonderful obstacle between Seimei and
Doman.

Don't even bother using your spear unless for some reason you run completely
out of magic.

Keep beating on him with your powerful magic until he falls. Utsuki runs
through and grabs her father, taking him off to merge with him. Walk through
the lab and exit into the Garden: Tree area to witness the ending.

X. ENEMY LIST
---------------

Main Enemies

Ghost: Weakest of all the creatures. Ghosts are easily dissipated by one
swipe of the equipped weapon. These spirits usually appear in response to
noise.

Gaki: Second weakest of all the evil creatures. Loosely translated hungry
ghost. The gaki are in various spots throughout the manor.

Yamabito: Residents of the manor that are infected with the disease. They
are fairly strong, but not very fast.

Mizuhiki: Mutated fishmen. These creatures spew a green gas as well as employ
a splash attack. They tend to attack in groups.

Ennyo: A shapeless mass of flesh. Serves as a mini-boss of sorts in the first
two phases, and a main enemy in the last one. Not extremely fast, but fairly
strong, and sometimes hard to hit.

Mashira: Aggressive monkeys guarding the mountain path to the shrine. Like
to attack in packs. Yang Phase only.

Adamushi: Appear to be giant silkworms with the head of a man. Fairly fast
and very strong, watch your health carefully when these attack. Weak against
Tsuchi Jogo summon.

Bosses

Lord Fujiwara: Lord of the Manor, infected by the spell. Boss guarding the Bell
in the Manors North Pavilion.

Lady Fujiwara: Lady of the Manor, also infected by the spell. Boss located

otherwise) for brief periods during the battle. Yang Phase only.

Dokai: Boss once you reach Utsukis House and the Silkworm Shrine. (Utsuki
fights him in a storage area, Sakuya fights him in the main room of the
Silkworm Shrine.)

Kureha: Although technically not a boss, the infected Kureha chases you
through various parts of Yang Phase. (She *can* be killed, but its not
really worth the effort involved in doing so.)

FINAL BOSS: Doman: Elder priest of the Silkworm Shrine and civilian exorcist.
Father of Kureha and Utsuki, mentor of Doachin, Doryo, Dokai, and Sakuya. Kuon
Phase only.

XI. WRITINGS (transcribed directly from the game, typos and all)
-----------------------------------------------------------------

A. Yin Phase Only

Domans Note (Letter written by Doman dated two weeks prior)

Dear Utsuki,
I have been summoned by the
Lord, who resides in the manor.

I shall be gone for a time. The
Lord is acquiring my prayers and
skills.

He is convinced that his manor is
cursed; I believe he has an overly
vivid imagination.

Most likely, he saw a rat and
mistook it for a creature of the
other world. At least, that is what
I think. I shouldn't be away for
very long, but take care of the
shrine in my absence. You must
not forget to take care of the
silkworms!

Also, I am worried about Kureha's
health. Please watch over her.

-----------------------

Kurehas Note (Note left for Kureha, dated two weeks ago)

I will be away for some time.
If something strange happens,
proceed to the manor.

I'll prepare many victims for
you to merge with.

-----------------------

Purpled Covered Book (Purpled covered book, emitting a foul odor.)

The residents of the manor are
disappearing, and not one of
them have returned alive. Sometimes
their corpses are discovered, and
they are always horrible to behold.

Some of them were killed with
bamboo spears. Others were
discovered under the eaves,
but were unrecognizable.
Only bits of their flesh remained.

I too may suffer that same fate.

-------------------

Green Bound Book (Green covered book with teeth marks.)

I saw Miyoshimaru break a seal
when he was sick.

Miyoshimaru used some kind of
blood-stained cloth and rubbed it
against the seal.

So he's the one who sealed the
door! If I can get some of his
blood, I should be able to escape
from the manor.

I'll wait until he's not looking.
Then I shall strike and have
some of this blood.

-------------------

Silkworm Journal Vol. 1 (Records of silkworms kept by Miyoshimaru.)

June 17
The servant boy, Miyoshimaru, gave
me some silkworm eggs. I saw many
of these black eggs on the mulberry
leaves. When I thanked him and gave
him a toy to play with, he bowed to
me again and again.

Everyone ridicules Miyoshimaru and
says he's feeble-minded. But I like
this gentle soul.

June 18
I'm keeping these silkworm eggs a
secret from my mother and sister.
If they see them, they'll make a
fuss because they're squeamish.

I watched them all day, but nothing
happened. Tomorrow I'll ask
Miyoshimaru if there's something
special I need to do.

June 19
Miyoshimaru told me the eggs will
hatch in 10 days. They need to be
kept in a warm place.

I put them in a room that receives
more sunlight.

June 22
The eggs are turning gray.

I was upset, because I thought
they might have rotted. When
I asked Miyoshimaru, he said
they should hatch very soon.

June 24
The silkworms have broken out of
their shells! They're very small,
about the size of my fingertip
and are covered with fur.

Following Miyoshimaru's
instructions, I gave them young
mulberry leaves, which they
gobbled up. At this rate, they'll
grow quickly.

----------------------------

Silkworm Journal, Vol. 2 (Records of silkworms kept by Miyoshimaru.)

June 27
The silkworms have lost their fur.
Their bodies are beautiful-
shinny and translucent.

I'm worried though, some of
them seem weak. They don't
move at all.

June 28
Miyoshimaru told me that the
silkworms that don't move are
just sleeping, and that I don't
need to worry.

So silkworms sleep, too!

July 4
I noticed that the silkworms had
grown when I looked at them this
morning. Though only a few days
have passed, they've doubled in
size. They grow much faster than
people.

Miyoshimaru has been so kind to me.
I must give him something. I wonder
what he'd like.

July 5
I'm going to teach Miyoshimaru
to read and write. I tried to give
him the little sword father gave
me, but he wouldn't accept it.

He's not at all greedy.

Some of the silkworms don't eat
very much. They're just like him.

July 10
The silkworms have shed their skins
many times, and continue to grow.

They're all so different. Some of
them lift up their heads and look
around, as though they were
thinking. While others crawl all
around all day.

A few have died.

July 18
The silkworms do nothing but devour
mulberry leaves all day. They've
grown so fat, I'm worried they'll
burst out of their skins.

Miyoshimaru said they'll be
cocoons soon.

--------------------------------

Silkworm Journal, Vol. 3 (Blood-stained record of the silkworms' growth.)

July 21
I ran into the elder priest when I
went to the shrine to get some
mulberry leaves.

He looked at the worms and said,
"These are normal silkworms
unike those fuond at the shrine."

I wonder if that's true.

July 24
I went to the temple to get
mulberry leaves again today.

The elder priest wasn't there,
but Miyoshimaru said he saw
the twins. I didn't see them, but
I know he would not lie. When I
returned from the shrine, the
silkworms had started spinning
cocoons.

July 25
The silkworms started spinning
silk yesterday. Today they're
cocoons. Miyoshimaru says we
just have to wait.

The cocoons are beautiful.
They glitter like silver thread
in the sunlight.

July 27
The cocoons are just sitting there.
Nothing is happening.

I shook them because I was afraid
they were dead. They made a
rattling sound.

Miyoshimaru laughed and said
they'll hatch soon enough.

July 30
The moths have come out at last!
After watching them for a while,
I decided that it's cruel to shut
them up in a box.

I was going to take them outside
and let them go, but Miyoshimaru
stopped me.

He said they can't survive outside.

August 5
They all died as soon as they
laid their eggs. Why do they
have wings if they can't fly?

----------------------

Priest's Journal, Vol. 1 (Well-written journal by the elder priest.)

For several days now, strange
sounds have been emanating
from the gruond under my feet.

At first I thought I was imagining
them, but I hear them even more
clearly at night when I sleep.

They're very strange - perhaps a
cross between agony and pleasure?

They say a creature emerged from
the bowels of the Earth, and that
this temple was built to prevent it
from proceeding any further.

Perhaps this creature has awakened
underneath this temple and is
howling. If it has been trapped
there for years, no wonder its
screams sound so.. sad.

-----------------------
Priest's Journal: Vol. 2 (The elder priest, of the shrine, Nyoei's journal.)

Lady Fujiwara departed from the
manor with many sick people.

She said that she was worried
about what the sick might
do if they weren't watched, and
asked that they be confined to
the temple.

I understand that Lady Fujiwara
too has contracted the disease.

But the sickness has not
destroyed her human kindness.

She reminds me of confucius'
saying about sacrificing one's life
in an act of charity.

I cannot help but admire her
high sense of morality.

-------------------------
Scroll: Exorcism (Scroll: Exorcism)

Long ago, a demon did emerge
from the bowels of Earth.

It appeared human, but was three
meters tall with arms as thick as a
woman's waist.

The demon was immortal.
Neither swords nor fire
could kill it.

One day a man appeared. He was
emaciated and clothed in rags.
To the people, who were at their
wits' end, he said,

"I will drive that demon away."

The people took one look at the
pitiful looking figure and turned
away, saying "You would be a fool
to embark upon such an enterprise."

The man ignored the people's
attempts to stop him. With the hint
of a smile on his face, he approached
the demon' lair. He pulled a spike
from the folds of his clothing and
threw it at the demon, penetrating
its flesh, riveting it to the wall.
Nailed to the wall, the demon
shriveled up and died after seven
days and seven nights of agony.

The man explained to the people
that spikes have the power to
suppress demons. He gave them
three spikes to use, should the
demon reappear, and departed.

The grateful people placed the
spikes in the small shrine in the
temple, where they have been
preserved ever since.

Elegant Diary (Diary kept by Utsuki as a child.)

September 3
Playing the Sugoroku game that
father gave us is so much fun!

I'll beat my sister tomorrow.

September 5
The Sugoroku pieces have
disappeared!

I've looked everywhere...
My sister and I will search for
them tomorrow.

I'm sure we'll find them.

September 6
My sister and I searched for them,
but were unsuccessful.

We told father what had happened...
I found it odd when he said we
should stop looking for them.

All I can do now is pray.

Mulberry tree, mulberry tree!
Help me find the Sugoroku pieces.

September 10
I still haven't found them.
The mulberry trees are malicious.

-------------------------------------

Decorated Diary (Diary kept by Kureha. Leaves adorn its cover.)

September 3
Utsuki loves the Sugoroku game
that Father gave her so much! We
play far into the night forgetting
the time.

Utsuki doesn't get upset when
she loses. She praises me when I
win and begs me to play another
game.

September 5
Utsuki was turning her room upside
down. When I asked her why, she
said that the Sugoroku pieces had
disappeared.

All she does is cry. Tomorrow
I'll help her look for them.

September 6
We looked for the Sugoroku pieces,
but couldn't find them.

Father scolded Utsuki for making
such a fuss, and told her to
abandon her search.

Her feelings hurt,
Utsuki went to bed.

After Utsuki went to bed, Father
told me, all of a sudden, that he
needed a lock of my hair.

When I asked him why, he said
he would use it as a sort of charm
to help find the Sugoroku pieces.

It's obvious that Father is very
fond of Utsuki.

September 9
Utsuki is praying to the shrine
Gods, asking them to find her
Sugoroku pieces.

Where could they have gone?
They must be inside this room,
because no one wuold have any
reason to take them elsewhere.

Kureha's Diary (Blood-spattered diary kept by Kureha.)

May 12
When I fell off the cliff, I
thought I was going to die.
But when I came to, there
wasn't even a scratch on me.

I thought it was strange awaking
in a wicker chest. I asked Utsuki
about it, all she did was cry.

So sweet of her to be worried.

October 3
I've been feeling tired and
weak for the past few days.

Utsuki keeps asking me if I'm
all right. She mustn't find out
how bad I really feel.

October 13
There are strange marks all over my
body. I'm hiding them best I can.

I'm sure my flesh is starting to rot.
I've caught that horrible disease!
I looked in all my books, but they
don't mention it.

Utsuki keeps asking me how I feel.
I don't like lying.

October 25
Yesterday I met some twins.
I don't know when they arrived,
but they told me to sleep with the
silkworms in the chest for a night.
Maybe, I was dreaming but I was
desperate, so I did as they said.
When I awoke, my body felt normal.

They must have been manifestations
of the mulberry God.

November 5
I played with Utsuki today,
for the first time in a while.

Perhaps because I hadn't been
active for some time, I felt

March 4
"Everything will be all right".
The twins said that I'll get better
if I get inside the chest again.
They said to look for a rat this
time, rather than a silkworm.

I must hurry, or my arm will rot
and fall off or maybe my legs.
I envy Utsuki for her soft, healthy
arms, legs and neck.

July 4
When I mentioned the twins to
Father, he told me about a
ritualistic practice involving
resurrection and cocoons.

He said that a revived corpse will
start to rot, at which point it must
become a cocoon. Each time fusing
with a larger creature. This needs
to be done nine times.

April 27
When I woke up inside the wicker
chest, I realized that it was
Utsuki who pushed me off the cliff!

She talks nonsense about irises
and poems, while here I am in
agony, my body beginning to
rot!

Ah, I wish I had her healthy skin.

May 7
Today I killed Utsuki. Her body
will soon merge with mine

B. Yang Phase Only

Doman's Message (Orders to investigate Fujiwara's manor.)

They say that disturbing events
have been occurring at the manor
of Lord Fujiwara.

Go there and investigate.

Some astrologers from the capital
are heading there for the same
reason. Be sure they do not
arrive before you do.

-------------------------------

Scrap Cloth (Writings on a scrap of cloth by a servant.)

The manor and Lord Fujiwara
are doomed.

But his daughter must be saved.

I saw Lady Fujiwara at the temple.
I wonder how she is now.

----------------------------------

Fujiwara's Letter (Letter sent to Fujiwara by a noble.)

Since you mentioned strange
happenings at your manor, I
have directed an seer of my
acquaintance to visit you.

He is a disciple of Abe no Seimei,
the renowned noble seer. I'm
sure he'll be able to help you.

Recently, a renegade seer named
Doman has been boasting about
his powers. He has powerful
disciples, and claims to be
Abe no Seimei's equal.

But he has strayed from the
seer's true path, and cannot
be compared.

------------------------------------

Inspection Report, Vol. 1 (Report on the inspection of Fujiwara's manor.)

March 17
Seimei has ordered me to
investigate the situation at
Lord's Fujiwara manor,
starting today.

Seimei's instructions were vague:

"First, look for spikes. If you see
one, you may leave the premises."

March 18
I found someone who knows
about the spikes. He claims to
be the elder priest of the shrine.

I learned that in ancient times,
this shrine was dedicates to a
mulberry tree which has three
spikes in its trunk. I will go
and visit the tree tomorrow.

March 19
I visited the tree today. I saw
the holes where the spikes have
been, but no spikes were there.

Spikes are used to confine evil.

I wonder what horrible evil they
were trying to confined, or even
worse...what has been released?

--------------------------------

Inspection Report: Vol. 2 (Report on the inspection of Fujiwara's manor.)

March 21
I asked the elder priest if
anything unusual had occurred
at the manor. He was kind enough
to answer my questions.

A long time ago, a demon appeared
on the road to the west of the
manor. The elder priest himself
blocked the road with a sacred
rope to keep the demon out.

The elder priest seems to know
a bit about astrology.

He is very wise and his demeanor
is calming. he seems far superior
to the lazy astrologers we
encounter so often.

Once this mission is completed,
it might be a good idea to
recommend him to Seimei.

March 22
I went to see the sacred rope for
myself. Is it possible that a mere
human was capable was capable of sealing
out a demon?

Such skills may even equal those
of Master Seimei.

March 24
I went to Lord Fujiwara's quarters
to ask him about the elder priest,
but his servants said they hadn't
seen him since morning.

Where could he have gone?

----------------------------------

Inspection Report, Vol. 3 (Report on the inspection of Fujiwara's manor.)

April 2
Gakis have taken over the manor.

Now that Lord Fujiwara is dead,
I must protect his wife and
children.

Some of the surviving servants
claim to have seen their Lord.
But I think their devotion to
him caused them to hallucinate.

There is pure carnage in one
of the rooms in the main building.

April 4
Lady Fujiwara suggested that I
abandon the manor and go to
the temple.

She seems to think that the gakis
won't be able to enter a Buddhist
temple. She believes that the
temple, built long before the manor
was, has miraculous powers.

She underestimates the gakis.

Perhaps it makes more sense
to go there seeking death then
to stay here waiting for it.

April 5
While fighting off a gaki on
the way to the temple, I lost
sight of Lady Fujiwara.

I hope she arrived safely there.

----------------------------------------

Yellow Cloth Scrap (Writing in blood on a yellow scrap of cloth.)

This is the feeding ground. You too
were tricked by the twins.

Lady Fujiwara will be here soon.
She is no longer human.
Go back, if you value your life.

-----------------------------------------

Dochin's Writings: Vol. 1 (Written by Dochin in his distinctive handwriting.)

I need to pass by the front of
the main building, but there
are gakis lurking there.

That's why I'm afraid to go there.
In any case, to avoid a needless
struggle with the gakis I must
avoid being seen by them.

I can use the corpse under the
eaves as a decoy! Since the gakis
are attracted by blood, they'll
start devouring the corpse right
away.

Maybe then they won't notice me.

I'm so smart I surprise myself
sometimes. Soon I'll be as famous
as Master Doman.

-------------------------------

Dochin's Writings: Vol. 2 (Written by Dochin in his distinctive handwriting.)

In the garden, I saw two girls
wearing red.

one was rather pretty, but the
other frightened me a bit.

The pretty one was playing with
with blood-stained cloths.
Why would a young girl have
something like that?

I know! They must have found
them somewhere. There couldn't
be any other reason.

I'm in rare form today!

-------------------------------------

Dochin's Writings: Vol. 3 (Blood-stained document written by Dochin.)

I don't think there's any point in
investigating the manor any
further.

Besides, I'm sick of this place.

I heard that if you take the
mountain path that goes by the
West Gate, you'll arrive at a
temple. If I go there, I might be
able to get some new information.

The door that leads to the West
Gate locked by Seal: Saturn.

There must be some way...

---------------------------------------

Miyoshimaru's Note 1 (Miyoshimaru's, servant boy, writings on a leaf.)

I saw her...

I saw it...

I watched Lady Fujiwara
eat her own little boy!

------------------------------------------

Miyoshimaru's Note 2 (Miyoshimaru's, servant boy, writings on a leaf.)

The elder priest placed a mirror
on a plinth, and opened the cave.

I'm sure that mirror was inside
the three-legged shrine gate.

----------------------------------------------

Miyoshimaru's Note 3 (Miyoshimaru's, servant boy, writings on a leaf.)

Now I know what's happening!

The manor has become a huge...
silkworm nest.

I'm a silkworm, too -
a silkworm who spins a coccoon!

----------------------------------------------

Miyoshimaru's Note 4 (Miyoshimaru's, servant boy, writings on a leaf.)

At this pond, I can hear everyone's
voice.

I can hear them calling from the
vassal sailed long ago.

I will be joining them soon.

-----------------------------------------------

Lady Fujiwara's Diary: 1 (Diary by Lady Fujiwara. It mentions an illness.)

April 5
I have decided to take the other
sick people with me to the temple.

I dare not see Miyoshimaru or Ayako.
I am no longer human.

I cannot allow my children to
witness their mother's flesh
rotting.

April 6
Fortunately, the priest was
kind enough to take us in.

I ordered Miyoshimaru,
the servant boy, to seal the
front gate. This way, the disease
shouldn't spread any further.

April 9
Today I felt faint. Suddenly,
I was inside a wicker chest.

There were no silkworms in
the chest, only a centipede.

April 10
My neck is throbbing with
pain. The muscles are stiff
and swollen.

Does this mean that the
disease is getting worse?

April 11
I asked the priest for a
room in the temple, which
he provided.

If I stay here, the disease
shouldn't get any worse.

-----------------------------------------------

Lady Fujiwara's Diary: 2 (Diary by Lady Fujiwara. White silk clings to it.)

April 14
Many days have passed since
I vowed to avoid other humans.

When I catch a glimpse of soft
flesh, I am overwhelmed by the
desire to eat it.

I cannot control this hunger.
My body is no longer my own.

April 15
Alone in my room every day,
with no one to talk to but the cat.

I'm so lonely.

April 17

Sometimes I hear a song.

When I hear it, my body aches,
longing to chew flesh and drink
blood.

But I must never go near Miyoshimaru
or Ayako. A mother must never kill
her own children!

April 18
Stroking the cat, I have a strange
feeling.

The cat is so soft. Human skin must
be much softer. And the children's
skin is surely even softer.

April 19
I heard that song again, and lost
consciousness.

When I awakened, I was in a
wicker chest. The cat lay next to
me, dead. Strangely enough, I'm no
longer lonely. For some reason, I
feel calm and confident.

There's something inside me.

April 22
Something is moving around.
Whatever it is, it is extremely
annoying. I must be vigilant.

April 23
Miyoshimaru came to visit me.
Ah, my sweet child! His flesh
so very young and tender.

He must have come because
he was worried about his starving
mother.

---------------------------------------

Dokai's Book: Vol. 1 (Dokai's neatly written research report.)

Investigation of the Gaki.

Experiment
Examined characteristics of gakis.

Conditions
1. Used a fellow seer for comparison
    purposes.
2. Arranged for the battle in
    enclosed area to assess the
    gaki's strength accurately.

Results:
1. A gaki was defeated.
2. The power of the cards
    and fans appears to be
    effective.
3. Gaki's are relatively weak.

However, their endurance is
something to behold!

------------------------------------

Dokai's Book: Vol. 2 (Dokai's neatly written research report.)

Investigation of the silk.

Experiment
Compare silk thread seals on doors
with cocoons in the wicker chest.

Conditions
1. Used a cocoon still occupied by a human.
2. Used thread remaining after
    seal had been broken.
3. Investigate viscidity, strength
    and magic power.

Results
1. Some difference in viscidity.
2. Silk thread slightly stronger.
3. Higher magical properties
    in silk thread.

Cocoons and silk thread are very
similar in nature. Was this silk
thread spun from cocoons?

----------------------------------------

Dokai's Book: Vol. 3 (Dokai's neatly written research report.)

Investigation of cocoons and
corpses.

Experiment
Investigate relationship between
corpses in cocoons and their food.

Conditions
1. Find two identical wicker chests.
2. Remove food (victim) from one
    chest during experiment.

Results
When the food (victim) was removed
from one chest, only an incomplete
union took place. The creature died
at once after it emerged.

Food inside the chests, especially
the silkworms, seems crucial
to the resurrection. The silkworms
in this mulberry tree must be
endowed with magic powers.

------------------------------------------

Utsuki's Diary (Utsuki's diary, flowers decorate its cover.)

April 21
Another day passed, but Father
didn't return. I went outdoors for
a walk, hoping that would lift my
spirits.

The irises in the garden are about
to bloom. The thought that they
might bloom tomorrow made
me feel a little more cheerful.

April 22
It's been drizzling since morning.
I can't look after the irises in
the rain.

Kureha stayed in her room because
her body hurts when it rains.

I saw a cuckoo land under the eaves.
How nice that he sings even in the
rain!

April 23
It rained again today. Not a heavy
rain, but a light, steady one.
Leafing through Father's book,
I found a poem about a cuckoo.

They say cuckoos are sentimental
about the past. My past is the same
as my present. I've never left
here. I'd like to see what's
outside.

April 24
I learned a poem recently. I
recited it till it annoyed my sister,
so I stopped and wrote it down.

The village of scattered blossoms,
The cuckoo sings for many days,
of unrequited love and those saved.

I wish my sister were as kind to
me as she used to be.

April 26
My sister's cough has gotten worse.

"Bring me a crow," she said.
"Why do you want a crow?"

"Never mind, just bring me one,"
she kept saying.

I can't go outside and leave my
sister alone. This is all my fault.

-----------------------------------------

Doman's Memorandum (Memorandum written by Doman about Kureha.)

Kureha seems to have entered into
a cocoon. Those twins certainly
have interesting ideas.

She's my daughter, after all. I'm
sure her silk threads will be
finer than those spun by the
sick people in the hut.

Kureha seems different from the
others, perhaps she's the
daughter of the elder priest.

Now the cards cannot help her.
Nor will the weapons supposedly
endowed with magic powers work.

Anyone who encounters her had
better run in the other direction.

=============================================================

C. KUON PHASE ONLY

Doman's Book: Vol. 2 (Document written by Doman. Concerning the mulberry.)

The Mulberry trees harbor
a powerful spell.

They are living creatures with
wills of their own. They live far
longer than humans and are
much more intelligent.

After I've completed my mission
and the time is right, I must
subdue those twins once again.

There are many ways to subdue them.
Which way would be best?

Fire annihilates them immediately.
But once they're dead, I won't be
able to use them again.

I suppose I'll suppress them but
keep them alive. I'll use a
demon-suppressing spike.

But given their magical powers,
one spike may not be enough.

I must remember that the twins
are a trivial concern. They're only
tools for sorcery.

In this realm, only that woman
has the power to resist me.

------------------------------

Doman's Book: Vol. 3 (Document written by Doman concerning silk and magic.)

Silk thread obtained from these
cocoons has magic power in
concentrated form which can be
used in a variety of spells.

It can be used as a seal.
A seal made from magic silk thread
can't be breached by anyone. Even
someone with supernatural strength.

Other uses for this silk thread are
spells that maniuplate summon
creatures or servant spirits.

One can also attach the silk thread
to puppets. Once given simple
orders, the puppets will execute
them and then act of their own
accord.

I could also make a servant puppet
from that woman's flesh and skin,
and force her to do my bidding.

-------------------------------------

Doman's Book: Vol. 4 (Document written by Doman concerning the mulberry.)

Those twins...where did
those two mulberry trees come from?

Rumor has it that the ancestors
of the Hata clan found them
somewhere and brought them
here.

I've never seen mulberry trees
like them.

Or perhaps their seeds floated here
from China, Korea or some other
foreign land.

Once there was a man named
Xu Fu, who came here from
China seeking eternal youth
and immortality.

Every age has its fools,
as does every realm.

Eternal youth and immortality are
nothing but illusions.

We enjoy life because we know
we will die.

What greater pleasure is there in
this world than to battle with
one's mortal enemy and emerge
victorious?

Lady Fujiwara Memorandum (Note addressed to Lady Fujiwara)

Milady,
I have placed the remaining
wooden disks in the manor's
small shrine and in the altar.

Don't worry about the two spikes.
I have entrusted them to Miss Ayako
and to the seer who's here
inspecting the manor. The two of
us are going to hide in the garden.
Please take care of yourself.

Ayako's Letter (Letter from Lady Fujiwara to her daughter.)

Dear Ayako,
I am going to the temple because
the manor is in danger. If it's
safe there, I will come to get you.

Until I signal you by ringing the
bell, do not open the door.

If I haven't returned in 10 days,
gather up the wooden disks
and spikes, and proceed to
the temple.

-------------------

Servant's Memorandum (Memorandum written by a servant concerning Ayako.)

Terrified of the demons that
come out at night, Ayako sobs.

Shut up in her room, she
weeps silently.

She believes the demons won't
notice her if she hides in her
room and doesn't make a sound.

Miss Ayako will open the door only
when Lady Fujiwara rings the bell
brought from the North Pavilion.

Ayako is as beautiful as an angel!

We servants have vowed to protect
her, no matter the cost...

Dedicated to the Silkworms.

The first priest planted two
mulberries in the garden. He
pronounced the two trees that
would spring from them sacred,
to be revered for all time. The
shrine must be watched by a member
of the Hata clan. The elder priest
shall be named Ashiya.

-------------------------------------

Doman's Book Vol. 1 (Document written by Doman regarding silkworms.)

My investigation of the silkworms
worshipped at the shrine are
nothing like ordinary silkworms.

The parents of the silkworms of
this shrine are incarnations of the
two mulberry trees. The mulberries
on the trees are their eggs.
Silkworms born from them have
magical powers.

They can bring back the dead.

But this means they must
feed from humans.

This dark magic suits me perfectly.

When the fusion of flesh has
occurred nine times, the spell
shall be perfected.

When I've mastered this magic
formula, you will whore
yourself before me!

-------------------------------------------

Doman's Book: Vol. 5 (Written by Doman about cocoons and the dead.)

Actually, entering a cocoon nine
times does not revive the dead.

What does happen is that the dead
are reborn as their children -
as mulberries.

This spell has always been intended
for silworms, not for humans.

------------------------------------

Crumpled Note (Note scribbled by Doman.)

Kureha's assimilation has advanced
considerably. Soon the Kuon spell
will be completed.

I've been waiting so long...

Seimei!
I eagerly await your arrival. I can
hardly contain my excitement
at the thought of our encounter!

------------------------
XII. FAQ/General Hints
------------------------

Is there any other way to regain health besides healing items?
A. Yes, you can push R1 to meditate until your health returns to full.
However, this is only effective if you are not currently being attacked. If you
are low on health and have no healing items, its best to run to a safe area
(i.e. the next room or screen), heal, and return to finish the battle.

Do I get any better weapons?
A. Yes, you get an ice and a fire weapon for both Utsuki and Sakuya. You dont
acquire them until later in the game, though. Seimeis weapon is the best you
can get for her, but you really dont need anything better.

Where is my health bar?
A. Your health bar is only visible from the in-game menu screen (accessed by
pressing select) or from the map screen (press L1). Outward signs of failing
health are: hand against chest (Utsuki) or shielding eyes (Sakuya), plus
heartbeat sounds and increased controller vibration Yellow (down at least
half or more). Vertigo and rapid heartbeat/vibration Red (one or two more
hits and youre dead).

How do I save?
A. Look for a little triangle of candles near a body of water. If you have a
Vessel, you can perform a cleansing ritual to save your game. (Vessels are the
equivalent of Resident Evil's Typewriter Ribbons, only more plentiful.)

Why give me the option to run if the game suggests you dont?
A. Although the in-game survival manual states that you shouldnt run you
can, just be forewarned that you will take more damage from contact with
Tempests and the noise you make (or the items you knock over) may draw enemies
to your position. It does drain your health a little at a time, so you just
have to be cautious, but its nothing that a little meditation cant cure.

Where do I go next/I followed the steps in the walkthrough and nothing
happened!
A. Make sure you have the required items to trigger the action. For example,
you wont see the cutscene with Utsuki and Doryo at the Mulberry Tree if you
dont have all three disks and spikes. If you are trying not to use this
walkthrough unless you absolutely have to the only real hint I have is to
read everything and watch for all the little animations. Follow those to the
next location.

If youve tried everything and youre still stuck, email me (see the Legal
Section) and I will do my best to help you out.

Further Tips:

In this game, even more so than others, its important not to let the enemies
gang up on you. Even the weakest enemies can kill you quickly when attacking
in a group.

An enemy is not dead unless you see a pool of blood around the body. If an
enemy is defeated but not yet dead, pull out your weapon and press your attack
button over the body. That will allow you to do a finishing blow.

Check all enemy corpses after defeating them. Usually they drop an item, and
if it falls under the body, it's often difficult to see.

If the game says NOT to do something, sooner or later youll have to do it.

Although you can equip magic and summons in both weapons slots, I recommend
leaving one open to use the physical weapon. True, it may not be as strong as
some magic, but its quicker on the draw many times.

There are some weird effects if you leave the game on pause or menu screen too
long. I dont really know how many there are, but youre not hallucinating if
your game does something weird.

Equipment and # Hits to Kill options. (Max Equipment gives you summons for
most of the monsters encountered in each phase, as well as the best weapons.)

 - The unlockable minigame Sugoroku, an old Japanese game similar to
Backgammon, becomes available once you find the Sugoroku Pieces in Yin Phase
and the Sugoroku Board in Yang Phase.

 - Submitted by mmjanitor:

Defeating Kuon Phase with the difficulty set to Insanity and the # hits to kill
to Nine Hits will unlock One Hit Kills. These affect both the player and all
enemies (including Doman).

 - Lyrics to the theme song, posted by katsuya2 on the Agetec Kuon boards.
(According to the game credits, the song is Hasi-zoroe.)

Hasizoroe Hasizoroe
Misu ni utsutta karagoromo
Obaketudura ni tudumi no ne
Kuwa no mi wo tuketa hanasitone
Kinuito tugumu magaidama
Sizukani yureru Hasizoroe
Hitoe ni hibiku kiraibasi
Hasizoroe.

katsuya2's rough translation:

Hasizoroe, hasizoroe.
Through a bamboo blind, I see a woman and a bamboo clothes box. I hear a sound
of a hand drum.
Scattered blood colors a carpet red-hot.
Silk thread spins a soul of a sham.
A bamboo clothes box is tied up with a string and wavers calmly.
It resembles the scene that a pleased baby shakes a body at the time of
Hasizoroe ceremony.
A threatening ceremony to continue earnestly.
Hasizoroe.

He says that Hasizoroe is some sort of Japanese cultural ritual.

Hushicho submitted this clarification to the lyrics:

"Anyway, I thought you might like to know that hashizoroe (it can also be
written hasizoroe, since si and shi are the same character) is also
known as ohashizome (or ohasizome) and refers to a child's first meal
fed by chopsticks (hashi). And if the implications of that aren't
enough to chill you right to the bone, I don't know what is. :)"

THE USUAL ENDING STUFF
----------------------

Thanks to:

My husband, who bought me this game when I was feeling particularly low and has
since tried to help if I got stuck. (And who kept prodding me to finish this
when I was almost done and wanted to slow down. :D);

Sashanan, for encouraging me and offering helpful advice on format and other
general issues. (And of course for being my all-in-one sounding board,
shoulder and mood stabilizer.);

The folks on the GameFAQs Kuon board. I didnt really have to bug them too
often but the stray hints I picked up helped me get through this quicker.
Special thanks to FeralX777 for his tips thread;

mmjanitor for finding the last of the unlockables;

Brian M. for pointing out a mistake I'd made in the Yang Phase section and
also for the information on how to avoid the Kureha/Doryo hybrid;

Sam M. also for being the first to notice and report the aforementioned
mistake;

katsuya2 from the Agetec Kuon board for finally posting the elusive theme song
lyrics;

Hushicho for writing to clarify what "hazizoroe" is;

Agetec for making such a cool game;

And CJayC and GameFAQs for getting me started on the FAQ writing thing.
