In Kengo 3, create your own swordsman and travel around Japan challenging different schools as you integrate their styles into your own. Collect swords from your opponents as you meet them along the road, join tournaments to prove your worth, or you may also do heroic deeds such as saving kidnapped victims or assassinating targets, it's all up to you on how you live the life of one devoted to the sword! Although I can't read Japanese, I have spent considerable time experimenting with this wonderful game. I'm sure a lot of people also want to enjoy this game, only to shy away because of the menu driven nature of majority of the game. With this guide, I hope that you will be able to have fun with most of the game's features, since the menus are really used to travel around Japan and to select weapons and clothes. Also in this guide, I shall create a swordsman that we can all use as a "walkthrough" of sorts. I'll try to be as detailed as possible so that the experience of following it will help you when you create your own swordsman to do whatever you please. Just please bear in mind that not everything will be exact because there seems to be some randomness in the game when it comes to what skills you learn or what sword you get, as well as how much you grow. There will be no literal translations of the menus, but I will provide the best words to describe what they are for. Please enjoy this guide and have fun! ---------- Main Menu: ---------- On the main menu, you will find these choices: Story Mode - This is where you create your own swordsman. This is more like a "choose your own adventure" game where there are no set paths to choose. VS Mode - This lets you fight the computer or a friend. Extra Modes - This lets you play extra modes like VS 100, VS1000, and 1-Hit Kill. View Mode - You get this after you finish the game once. It lets you view things that you got in Story Mode like techniques. Options - Change your game settings to your liking here. -------- VS Mode: -------- The first screen asks you if you want to fight the CPU or another player. On the next screen is the character selection. Below the list of characters is a display which shows how strong a character is. The more full the bars are, the better that character is. If you have created a swordsman in Story Mode, you can use him/her as well. Just press the Select button and the character list will switch to the Created Characters list. The next screen will let you change your set up if you chose a Created Character. --------------------------------- VS Mode Created Character Set-up: --------------------------------- When you choose a Created Character in VS Mode, you can set him/her up before battle. Here are the options from top to bottom. 1. Costume - When you choose this, two more choices will show up. The first one is used to change your clothes, while the second one is used to change your head accessories like masks or hats. You will need to buy them from Story Mode before they show up here. 2. Sword - You can change the sword that you are using from here, but you'll need to get them from Story Mode first. 3. First Stance - change the style of your first stance. You must learn them from Story Mode first. 4. Second Stance - change the style of your second stance. You must learn them from Story Mode first. 5. Third Stance - change the style of your third stance. You must learn them from Story Mode first. 6. Weapon Type - the first choice lets you use a real weapon, while the second one lets you use a wooden version of your weapon. 7. Done - choose this when you're happy with your Created Character set up. The next screen will let you pick a stage to fight in. To unlock other stages, you must fight on them in Story Mode first. --------------------- VS Mode In-Game Menu: --------------------- During a fight, press Start to bring up the in-game menu. 1. Resume/Rematch - when you or your opponent has been killed, choose this for a quick rematch. 2. Change Characters - this will bring you back to the character select screen. 3. Change Stage - this will bring you back to the Stage Select screen. 4. Exit - this will take you back to the main menu. ------------ Extra Modes: ------------ These extra modes are fun as they involve you having to kill a lot of enemies! 1. VS 100 - kill 100 enemies to win! 2. VS 1000 - kill 1000 enemies to win! Every 60 kills, you will get a short break time and your health will be replenished a bit for the next wave of enemies. 3. 1-Hit Kill - kill 108 enemies, but be careful, 1 hit will kill you as well! -------- Options: -------- There isn't much to change in the options menu. They are mostly used to disable certain information from being displayed in VS Mode like health and the stance you're using. 1. Life Bar - On/Off 2. Stance - On/Off 3. Blood - On/Off 4. ??? (Maybe it's a switch for the controller's vibration?) 5. Music - On/Off 6. VS Rounds - set the number to the amount of wins you need to be declared the ultimate VS Mode Winner! *********************** Part 2 *********************** ----------------------- Story Mode Walkthrough: ----------------------- In the Story Mode, we will create a swordsman which we will help get to the "end" of the game, which is a tournament of the best swordsmen in Japan help in Edo. Please remember that there are also different events which may occur while in the game that's not in this guide. After we reach that "end" (which serves more like a checkpoint), we will then proceed to discover what events we can while travelling all around Japan. When you choose Story Mode, you will be presented with two choices: 1. New Game 2. Load Game Choose the first one to start a new game and create a swordsman. ------------------- Character Creation: ------------------- This is where the fun really begins! The first screen lets you choose from a number of heads that you can choose to represent your swordsman. Please take note that there are also female heads if you want to create a female character. After choosing your character's head, the screen will ask you to input your name. Now thisis really sad for those who can't understand Japanese, but there is a way to write your name with alphabets! At the bottom of the box, there are two choices. Choose the left one. You will notice that suddenly, the box is letting you select from a bunch of symbols. Scroll down and you'll discover letters that you can actually use to spell your name! Unfortunately, the space provided is limited. For the first part, you only get to type in 3 letters, while the second part of your name, you can type in only 5 letters. At least this is better than not being able to see your name on the screen. Once you have finished typing your name, press Start and then choose the already highlighted character on the right to proceed. The next screen, I don't really know what it is for, but it seems to be some type of "Potential" chooser. It lets you choose different set-ups that seem to give more to some stats, and less to others. Others also seem to have lower "Maximum Potential". Let us just stick to the default choice and proceed. You will then be presented with a map because you will have to choose where your character is going to originate from. With the help of the little translated map in GameFaqs by "Jack Power", here's a list of the available areas for you. I will list them in order of upper right going to bottom left. 1. Aizu (this is selected by default) 2. Ueno 3. Edo (this isn't available as a starting point, but it's directly below Ueno) 4. Owara 5. Kyoto (this is directly in the middle) 6. Iga (this is directly below Kyoto) 7. Osaka 8. Tosa (this is on the island) 9. Buzen 10. Chikugo 11. Satsuma (this is on the bottom left) Let us choose Aizu, which is the default option. We are choosing Aizu because there aren't much text in the menu yet, and this will be good practice for you to be familiar with certain Japanese characters and what they represent in the menu. The next screen will have two choices for you. It is actually asking if you have a previous character whom you would like to use as your "saviour" of sorts. You can only choose a previous character to be your saviour (meaning you can use their money, fighting moves, clothes, and weapons) if that character has already won the ending tournament in Edo. Choose the second option for now because you don't have a previous character that has won the Edo tournament yet. The next screen will show you the starting stats of your character, as well as the maximum potential he/she can achieve in the game. Press the button to proceed, and then you'll be presented with two choices. Select the top choice and the game will finally begin with your character. -------------- The Beginning: -------------- After witnessing two swordsmen kill each other, you fall down in the snow. Another swordsman sees you and saves you. Later on, you are seen training at his place. He calls you to talk about something, and then you are presented with the menu in your room. I will list them down from top to bottom as I give a general idea of what they're for. 1. Action - currently, you only have one action to do here, which is to go visit the swordsman who saved you for some training. 2. Customize - when you choose this, you will be presented with three choices to customize. a. Moves - there are three slots to put combo moves in. Press Triangle to view a move or a slot. Press the O button to activate the animation to see it. Currently you only have two moves available. b. Weapons - you don't have any choices here yet, only the default one. You can collect swords from the Tea House betting game or you can buy some from the sword shop. c. Clothes - you don't have any choices here yet, only the default one. You can buy clothes from the clothes shop. 3. Stats - this section just shows trivial things like moves you've learned, swords you collected, characters that you've met, and others. We won't be bothering with this since it's all just about reading. 4. Rest - currently at the start, you have four choices. This is used to skip to a time period in the game. Each time you skip a time period, there are lesser choices here, until you reach evening and your only choice is to Skip to the Next Day. a. Skip 1 Time Period b. Skip 2 Time Periods c. Skip 3 Time Periods d. Skip to Next Day 5. Save/Load - choose this and you will be presented with three choices. a. Save b. Options c. Exit to Main Menu Right now, it is a good time to save the game. Choose the fifth option (Save) and choose the first option to Save the game. You will be brought to a screen with free saving slots. Save to one slot and then you will see two choices. It's asking you if you really want to save there, choose the left one to save. Once you are done saving, go back to the previous screen. ----------------- General Controls: ----------------- Before we continue any further, now is the best time to have a little review of how the control works while in fighting mode. Triangle - Back/Side Step. Press this in combination with Back, Up, or Down to do your desired step. Square - Distracting Weapon Strike. Some moves allow you to push aside your opponent's weapon by pressing Square. You can follow it up with the Circle button to strike your opponent after you distract his weapon. You can also add directions with the Circle button to make your character move forward while attacking, backward, or going to the side. O - this is used to attack. X - this is used to block. Some moves also allow you to do Block-Counter Strike. Just press X before the weapon hits you and your swords will lock for awhile, press O to attack. You can also cancel combos by pressing X anytime. For more information about how to do an Endless Combo, please check out the Tricks section near the end of this guide. L1 - Run. You can also attack while running by pressing O. L2 - Switch to Previous Stance (Move Set). R1 - sheath sword. Some moves allow you to attack while your sword is sheathed. R2 - Switch to Next Stance (Move Set). Pose - at anytime when you are attacking, hold down the O button and you'll notice that your character will also pose in that move until you let go of the O button. --------------------------- Training with Your Saviour: --------------------------- You are now back to your room and you can see the five options again. Choose the Action menu (the first one on the top). There is only one action for you here, choose it and you will meet your saviour for some basic training. On the next screen, you'll see your saviour's place. You will be presented two choices. Select the top one and you'll go inside the house. The screen after that will show you your saviour talking. A long list of menu items will then show up! Don't be scared because it's just a list of things you can practice with to get comfortable with the game's fighting controls. We will go through them one by one because this will help you get familar with the controls easily. Here is a list and a description of what will be done. 1. Talk - your saviour will just talk about something. 2. Attack - just keep pressing the O button to attack. 3. Block - just hold the X button to block his attacks. 4. Back/Side Step - when your saviour attacks, press the Triangle button to side step. Please note that you can side step to any direction. Press UP+Triangle to side step to the left, DOWN+Triangle to side step to your right, and just press Triangle to step back. A good way to back/side step his attack is to wait for him to raise his sword completely, and then press the Triangle button to step back or do a side step. 5. Block-Counter Strike - this training has two parts. On the first part, keep hitting the O button to attack him. You'll notice that he'll block your attack and then counter it with his own strike. On the second part, you will have to block his attack when it's about to hit you. You need to time this well, otherwise, you won't be able to counter his attack. Wait for him to raise his sword, then when it begins to come down, press X to block. You'll notice that your swords will be locked with each other, press forward and hit the O button to attack. You might hit him, but he will most likely avoid your counters. 6. Distracting Weapon Strike - in this training, he will show you how to "distract" the weapon by taking it out of the way, and then striking with your own attack. There are two parts to this training once again. On the first part, he will try to push your sword aside and then he'll hit you. On the second part, it's your turn to push his sword aside and hit him. Press the Square button when you're in mid-range from him (just so you reach his sword) and you will see that your character is trying to push his weapon aside. While this is going on, press the O button to attack him. 7. Escaping the Distracting Weapon Strike - in this exercise, you will be shown how to escape the "Distracting Weapon Strike" from the previous lesson. On the first part, just keep pressing Square to see how he does it. On the second part, you will have to press the Triangle button when you see him try to do the "Distracting Weapon Strike" on you. You will know it's the right time to press Triangle when you see the shiny rings on the screen. 8. Sparring - in this lesson, you will have to spar with your saviour with everything you have learned so far. The strategy against the savior is to simply side step one of his attacks then attack him quick. Don't even try to do the "Distracting Weapon Strike" on him as it is quite hard to pull off. In case you lose, you will be brought back to the menu, just choose the Sparring choice (it's the second to the last) and try to beat him again. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------ Extra Info: I'm not sure if it's really been taught in the game but there's another way to escape the "Distracting Weapon Strike". Instead of pressing the Triangle button, you can press Back+X button to jump back, or Up or Down+X button to quickly side step away. The only disadvantage is if his attack also follows in your direction, then it will be a sure hit! The advantage of this is, if you're successful, then you have created a space between him and you that would allow you to take a little break or escape from being trapped in a corner. You may also try to press Forward+X when he's trying the "Distracting Weapon Strike" on you, this will cause you to rush forward and bump him. If you bump him, he will be stunned for a second or two, giving you a chance to hit him with all you've got. The disadvantage is, if he did anticipate you trying to bump him, then he'll jump back along with you and he'll hit you for sure! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------ After defeating your saviour, you will be brought back outside of his home, you will see five choices again. It is the best time to save for now! Choose the fifth option, then choose the top choice. Save your game and go back to the screen with five options. Now it's time to learn some new moves! Where else can we learn more moves but in a dojo? To go to the Aizu Dojo, choose the first option. You will then have 6 choices. a. Return To Where You Came From (Saviour's House, the first option will most of the time be about returning to where you came from) b. Inn (this is where you live/rest, for now it's free, remember that is is made up of two easy characters) c. Jobs (this place is where you get jobs to earn money, we'll deal with this later, also remember that it's the one that starts with a SQUARE shaped character) d. Tea House (this is the place where you can beat people for swords, or participate in tournaments where you have to defeat 100 people in a friendly fight or a deadly live swords event) e. Dojo - (this is the only dojo in Aizu, please take note of the character it ends with, all dojos have that kind of character at the end) f. Blacksmith (you can go here so he can appraise or fix your swords) Choose the fifth option so that we can start on our way to the Aizu Dojo. -------------------- The Aizu Dojo Day 1: -------------------- On our way to the Aizu Dojo, our character encounters two men duelling. The guy with the orange sword kills the other, and a short converstation occurs between our character and him. Fortunately, he leaves us alone! Upon reaching the Aizu Dojo, we are presented with two options. Choose the first one to go inside the dojo. You will then talk to someone from inside, and then you will be allowed to spar with one of them. In the Aizu Dojo, they will most likely use attacks that come from above. Once you have checked on how far their attacks can reach, try to make them attack first. Side or back step, then hit them with your first stance combo. Move away and repeat. ---------------------------------- Equipping Your First Learned Move: ---------------------------------- Once you have beaten a student of the dojo, you will most likely learn a new move. You will then be back outside the dojo and it's already evening. Save your game (choose the fifth option, then choose the first option and then save). After saving your game, go back to the screen with five options. Select the second choice (Customize) and you will notice that you only have two options! The reason why you only have two options right now in the Customize menu is because you can't change clothes while you're outside of your room or inn. The two choices are: a. Moves b. Weapons Choose the first one (Moves) and you'll be brought to a screen with three slots. You'll notice that since we haven't really touched this yet, only two slots are filled in. The first slot is for your first stance, the second one is for your second stance, and the third is for your third stance. Select the third slot and press the O button. Another box would appear with two things listed in it. Try to select the first one. Depending on what type of move you learned from the Dojo, you might have two moves listed on the first one or just one. The same goes for the second option when you first selected the third slot. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------- Extra Info: Explanation on Moves Slots You'll notice that by default, you have the first slot and second slot filled in with a combo or move set. You'll also notice that each slot has four sections. The first three sections just tell the name of the combo or move set. The fourth section has two parts in it, the first one has arrows, while the second one has some characters in it. The arrows represent which attacks that current move set can use the "Block-Counter Strike" on. For example, on the first slot, it shows the Down arrow. That means, the move set on the first slot can use the "Block-Counter Strike" on attacks coming from below. Basically, the more arrows a certain move set has, the more advantageous it is for you because you will be able to use the "Block-Counter Strike" from attacks coming from more directions. The Dot represents a stab attack coming from the enemy. Just remember that sooner or later, you will learn moves that don't have the "Block- Counter Strike" ability, but some of them are worth the sacrifice because of the offensive combinations they unleash. The second section tells you about which stances from the enemy you can use the "Distracting Weapon Strike" move where you press the Square button to push aside your enemy's weapon before striking. Again, the more you have available here, the better for you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------- Press the Triangle button on a move set and you will be brought to a screen that shows you how the move set looks like. Let's call this section the "Moves Viewer". ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------- Extra Info: Explantation on Moves Viewer When you reach this screen, you will notice that you're in a dark room and there will be four boxes on the left with various information about the move set. On the first box (which is already highlighted), press the O button to view the entire move set combo. You will see your character perform the combo. The second box let's you view the "Sheathed Weapon Attack" of your sword. Some move sets might not have this, but majority does. You press R1 to sheath your sword, and then press O to do this while in a battle. The third box shows which types of "Block-Counter Strikes" you can do. Press O on those that have names to view them. The fourth box (which is the last) shows you which types of "Distracting Weapon Strikes" that move set can do. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------- Go ahead and view all the available move sets and feel free to modify your Moves Slots. Go back to the screen with five options and Save the game (choose the fifth one, then the first one to save). -------- Resting: -------- After a hard day's work of sparring against your saviour and fighting someone at the Aizu Dojo, it is already evening and it's a good time to return to our room to rest. From the screen with the five options, choose the first one (Action menu). You will have six choices. a. Return to Aizu Dojo (the first option will always be about returning to the most recent place you visited) b. Saviour's House (there's no point returning here anymore since you've learned all that you can) c. Inn (this is where you rest to restore your health if you've been hurt badly, for now this is free because you started in Aizu, but in other places you have to pay) d. Jobs (we don't need money yet) e. Tea House (this is a place to make bets to win swords, or fight in friendly or deadly tournaments) f. Blacksmith (we don't need to have any sword appraised or fixed yet) Choose the third option (Inn) and you will be brought to a screen with three choices. a. Skip 1 Time Period (Evening going to Midnight) b. Skip to Next Day c. Cancel Choose the second option (Skip to Next Day). Choose the first option to accept. You will then be brought to your room and your stats will be shown. You'll notice that your "Minimum Potential" just went up! It might be random by how much they go up, but in the character I made, it went up from 3000 to 3003/6000. The percentage you see is your health or sword health. It is important to always keep this at 100% before fighting in the dojo, tournament, or anywhere else. You might also see two other numbers below the percentage. Those are your "Popularity" points of some sort. The higher they are, the better for you. Popularity seems to affect how dojos and people treat you, what items are available for you to buy, and what events get activated. Anyway press the O button to move on. -------------------- The Aizu Dojo Day 2: -------------------- You are now back to your room with five options. On the left upper part of the screen is a box showing you some numbers and a percentage. You'll notice there's a number 2 there. That means it is now your second day in the game! Congratulations! You will also notice there's a number 1 below the first number. That is your money. It means you have 1 Ryo. Just beside 1 Ryo is 0, that means it's 0 Mon (also a form of currency in Japan). The percentage is your health, hopefully it's at 100% right now after resting. We need to learn some more useful moves! We are going back to the Aizu Dojo to do just that. Select the first option (Action menu) and there will be five choices. a. Saviour's House b. Jobs c. Tea House d. Aizu Dojo e. Blacksmith Choose the fourth one (Aizu Dojo). You will be given two choices again outside the dojo. Choose the first one to go inside. Now you will have to fight against three students! The strategy to beat these students should be the same as the first day. The attacks mostly come from above, but sometimes they might do attacks coming from the sides, so be careful. Just make them attack first, then either try to do a "Block-Counter Strike" or just side step and then hit them. After beating all three of them, you should have learned thee more moves hopefully. You will be brought back outside of the dojo again with the five options. Save your game first (choose the fifth option, then choose the first option, then save). Now that you have saved, it's time to check out the moves that you just learned! They might be more useful than the ones you currently use. Go back to the screen with five options, then choose the second option (Customize menu). Choose the first one (Moves) and try to find out what each new move looks like. Equip them if you want. When you are done, return to the screen with five options and save your game. After saving your game, it's time to revisit the Aizu Dojo to learn some more moves! Since you already are just outside the Aizu Dojo, we just need to get back in. From the screen with five options, choose the first one (Action menu). You will see six choices. a. Return to Aizu Dojo b. Saviour's House c. Inn d. Jobs e. Tea House f. Blacksmith Choose the first one (Return to Aizu Dojo), then choose the top option and prepare for two more fights! The two fights will be noticably more difficult than the previous ones. The students you are fighting are becoming better. They may have the same moves, but they're skill in using those moves are improving, and they're faster too! Just be patient and try to side step then attack them when they're open. You might also encounter a student who can do the "Block-Counter Strike" move which is very dangerous as it does massive damage. This is another reason why we don't want to be the first to attack them, especially since our character is still relatively slow and weak. After you beat them, you might learn a skill or two. You'll notice that it is evening once again outside the dojo. From the screen with five options, go save your game. Go check out the new moves that you learned as well and see if they are worth equipping. To do this, from the screen with five options, choose the second one (Customize menu), then choose the first option. Review whatever moves you have available and equip them as needed. When you're done equipping new moves, you'll notice that your health might not be at 100% anymore. Since my character got damaged during the dojo battle, my percentage is now at 94%. You might still have 100%, or worse, even lower, so it's now time to go back to our inn to rest. From the screen with five options, choose the first one (Action menu), and then choose the third one (Inn). You will have three choices again, choose the second one (Skip to Next Day). Choose the top choice to accept. You will be brought back to your room, and you'll notice that your "Minimum Potential" has gone up again! Very good! Your heatlh should be back to 100% again, and you will notice that your "Popularity Points" should have gone up as well. Right now, my character has 33 Popularity Points. -------------------- The Aizu Dojo Day 3: -------------------- Another day has started and it's time to learn some more moves from the Aizu Dojo! You may want to save the game again just in case. By now you should be familiar on how to save your game so I wouldn't be writing it anymore to save space and to make things easier to read. The Saving process is always the same anyway. Choose the first option (Action menu), then choose the fourth option (Aizu Dojo). Choose the top choice on the next screen to enter the dojo. Prepare to fight! You will battle 2 students again. Their difficulty will also be higher than the previous students, so prepare for that. You will also notice new movements from them, like running away, and they will have an even improved defense. The only real way to deal with them now with our weak character is to let them attack first, then we side step and then attack. Also, be ready for lots of "Distracting Weapon Strike" moves from them! They will be using them more often, so it's best to get ready to press the Triangle button (to escape it) or press the X button with any direction to jump away or side step when they initiate this. After beating the two students, you might notice that there seems to be a lack of new moves to learn. Your health might also get low. Just save your game for now while we're outside the dojo. At 75% health, it should still be safe to go back inside the dojo for one more fight, so let's go in. From the screen with five options, choose the first one (Action menu), then choose the first choice (Return to Aizu Dojo). Choose the top one to enter. If you have won all fights so far (as our created character has in this guide), there will be a cutscene where a student will introduce you to the master of the dojo. You will then fight with a tough student. After you win, you might learn a new move. You will be back outside the dojo and it's evening once again. Go save your game. Check the new moves you just learned. To do this, from the screen with five options, choose the second one (Customize menu), then choose the first option (Moves). Equip whatever you think will be useful to you. Be sure to check out all of the attacks available. If you see the "Block-Counter Strike" style that the Aizu Dojo is using where they block the sword, step on your sword, and then slash you, then equip that right away. That is one "Block-Counter Strike" that is impossible to defend against and is probably one of the best moves in the game. Also, it comes with a nice offensive combo where you spin from right to left while slashing, and then ending it with a downward cut. This is a very useful attack when you're fighting more than 1 enemy, which is usually the case during jobs. After inspecting each new learned move set and equipping the useful ones, it is time to go back to the inn to rest. From the screen with five options, choose the first one (Action menu), then choose the third one (Inn). Choose the second option (Skip to Next Day) and then choose the top one to accept. Congratulations, your character has improved nicely! -------------------- The Aizu Dojo Day 4: -------------------- By now, if you have won all the fights so far, we should have around 55 Popularity Points. Since it is another day, it is time to go back to the dojo to try to learn some more new moves! Choose the first option (Action menu), then choose the fourth one (Aizu Dojo). Choose the top option to enter and prepare for battle once again. You'll see a cutscene of a student practicing. You will now fight! During the battle, you might notice some considerable improvement in your speed, and that's because we've been working hard these past few days and beating the students in the dojo! Hopefully you have the move set that I was talking about that we learned from the Aizu Dojo, the one with the unblockable "Block-Counter Strike" move which also contains the spinning attacks. You should be able to make quick work of this student now. After beating him, you might learn another move. Go save your game outside the dojo, and then check your move list if you did learn something. To do this, choose the second option (Customize menu), then the first one (Moves). Check everything for something new and decide if it's useful or not. Currently, our character just learned a 5-hit combo with the same unblockable "Block-Counter Strike" move from the Aizu Dojo. The 5-hit combo is composed mostly of middle slashes, ending with an upward slash. This is useful only when in close range. Once you are done, go back to the screen with five options (that's outside the dojo) and we're ready to return inside. Go choose the first option (Action menu) then choose the top one (Return to Aizu Dojo), then choose the first option to go inside. You will have a fight with one student. With the new moves that you have hopefully learned, he should be easy to dispatch. Just be careful of his attacking range, and let him be the first to make the mistake of attacking, then hit him while he misses. After beating the student, you will get into a conversation with the dojo master, then you will be brought outside. It is evening once again. Save if you want. It's time to go back to the inn to recover from injuries. Choose the first option (Action menu), then choose the third one (Inn). Choose the second option (Skip to Next Day) and then choose the first option. I hope you're getting used to this by now. On the stats screen in the room, we'll have around 77 Popularity Points by now. Also our other strengths should have increased as well. Save your game if you wish. -------------------- The Aizu Dojo Day 5: -------------------- Our health should be back to 100% by now, and we're ready for another day at the Aizu Dojo! Choose the first option (Action menu), then choose the fourth one (Aizu Dojo). Choose the first option to go inside. You will have to fight 2 students. The first one should be easy, but the second one is a real challenge. If you attack first, as expected, he will use the unblockable "Block-Counter Strike" move on you. He moves faster than your normal opponent, so he's a bit hard to side step and attack. You just have to be patient enough with him in order for the side step attack to work. Be careful, he will also try to run away from you. If you run after him, he will surely hit you when you get within range while you're running! Do not be tempted to run after him, instead, just slowly work your way to the range that you know he will attack that will make him miss you. After defeating that tough man, you're back outside the dojo. Save the game and it's time to go back in. Hopefully your health is more than 75%. Choose the first option (Action menu), then choose the first choice (Return to Aizu Dojo), choose the first one to go inside. You will see the tough student bowing to his master, then the fight will begin. The first fight is just as tough as the previous, just be careful of their "Block-Counter Strike" move. The second one is against the best student of the dojo. It's really going to be hard to defeat him, as his hits hurt a lot! Win or lose, if you make it to the second fight, you might have learned two new moves! In this case, our created character lost to the best student. Save the game outside the dojo and then check the available moves you have. If you don't see any new moves, then maybe it was something else that got added. Just don't mind it for now and it's time to return to the inn to recover. Choose the first option (Action menu), then choose the third choice (Inn). Choose the second one (Skip to Next Day) and then choose the top one to go to your room. As of now, we should have around 99 Popularity Points. -------------------- The Aizu Dojo Day 6: -------------------- It's time to spend the day at the Aizu Dojo once again! Choose the first option (Action menu), then choose the fourth one (Aizu Dojo). Choose the top option to go inside. You will see a cutscene of a student meditating. It's time to fight again! The student will be easier than the one from yesterday. After defeating him, save the game and return to the dojo. When you return, you will have two fights again. The first one is the easy student, but the next one will be the best student again! Beat the first student using the same strategy. The next fight against the best student would just be really hard. This time, he might even use some kind of karate throw on you when he's near, which will leave you on the ground, open to his ground stab attack, which usually results in one or two hit kills! Anyway, our character lost to the best student again because he just deals too much damage and he's way faster than us. At least we learn or add parts to our moves little by little even if we lose. Go save your game and return to the inn. We should have around 119 Popularity Points by now. --------------------------------- Aizu Tournament Invitation Day 7: --------------------------------- I think this is triggered by having 100 or more Popularity Points. A samurai will come visit you to invite you to a tournament. After that scene, you will be back in your room. Go save if you haven't done so. Since we just got beaten up by the best student from the Aizu Dojo, our health is just at 92%. It would be ok to skip a day at the dojo to check other things out. Go choose the first option (Action menu) and you'll notice we have a new addition to the list. a. Saviour's House b. Tournament (it is made up of two complicated characters) c. Jobs d. Tea House e. Aizu Dojo f. Blacksmith Let's check out the Tournament, which is the second choice. When you reach the tournament area, you will see on the screen the number 3. It's saying you have 3 days left until the tournament begins! Now might be a good time to try and learn some more new moves, but from where? ------------------------------ Friendly Tea Tournament Day 7: ------------------------------ Since we already have a somewhat capable character who just can't still beat the superior best student from Aizu Dojo, we might have a fighting chance elsewhere before the start of the tournament. It is time to visit the Tea House for a friendly tournament against strangers. From the screen with five options, choose the first one (Action menu), you will see seven choices. a. Return to Tournament b. Saviour's House c. Inn d. Jobs e. Tea House f. Aizu Dojo g. Blacksmith Choose the fifth option (Tea House). Choose the first option to enter. Inside, you will be presented two choices where you have to press Triangle or Square. Press Triangle to participate in a friendly tournament. Press Triangle again. The friendly tournament will begin. It is completely random who you fight, as everybody is a stranger. The friendly tournament will use swords only, and there is a good chance that you will learn moves after you beat your opponents. You will be facing different sword fighting styles for the first time, but fortunately, most of the strangers aren't too hard to beat. They are usually on the level of those normal dojo students. After you beat one, you have the option of fighting the next opponent. Press Triangle to continue fighting, or press Square to quit for the day. Since we have three days before the tournament, we'll spend two days fighting in the friendly tournament, and then we'll spend one day to fully recover to 100% just before the tournament. Try to beat as many as you can to learn new moves! Oh and remember, your health only replenishes partially up to the percentage when you entered the friendly tournament. For example, if you entered at 92% health, then the maximum the healing for each round can go is just 92% of your health. Later on the maximum healing also goes down as you progress in the friendly tournament. After you have had enough and chose to press Square to stop fighting (or if you lose), you will go back outside of the tea house. Since you probably have very low health left, it's best to go back to the inn for today. On the screen with five options, choose the first one (Action menu), then choose the third one (Inn). Choose the second option (Skip to Next Day) and choose the first option to start resting. The character that we're using in this guide was able to beat around 62 people before his health became dangerously low, and that's when we decided to rest. That resulted in having around 882 Popularity Points and greatly increased skills! ------------------------------ Friendly Tea Tournament Day 8: ------------------------------ We still have 2 days left before the start of the Aizu Tournament, so it would be better to spend some time learning new moves and improving our skills in the friendly tea tournament. From our room, choose the first option (Action menu), and then choose the fourth option (Tea House). Choose the first option to enter. Prepare for battle once again and hope that you learn something new! After you quit or you get beaten, it's time to take a break. Choose the first option (Action menu), and then choose the third option (Inn). Choose the second option (Skip to Next Day) and then choose the first option to start resting. ------------------- Resting Time Day 9: ------------------- On the next day, you should have more Popularity Points. Our character in the guide now has 1469 Popularity Points. Save your game. Since it is important to be at 100% health on the day of the tournament, let's take this day as a rest day. In your room, choose the fourth option (Rest menu) and choose the fourth choice (Skip to Next Day). This will bring us to day 10 and our health will be at 100%. ----------------------- Aizu Tournament Day 10: ----------------------- This is it! The Aizu Tournament day! Before we proceed to the tournament area, make sure that you have equipped all the moves that you think are useful. After making sure everything is fine, it's time to go to the Tournament area. Choose the first option (Action menu), and then choose the second option (Tournament). Choose the first option to go in the tournament area. In the tournament, you will have to face a few opponents until you reach the grand finals. The fighting styles of your opponents will vary, just like in the Friendly Tea Tournament. The only real challenge you'll face might be the final opponent, but if you can handle the Tea Tournament and the Aizu Dojo students, these guys wouldn't really pose a threat to you. After winning the tournament, you are given a few choices. Sometimes it's two, sometimes three. I don't know what they are for but just pick one. You will also be rewarded 1 Ryo for winning the tournament. With your first win, you will be brought back to your saviour's home and the two of you will discuss about something. After some time, he will give you his sword to inherit. Once you are outside of his house, go save your game. Be sure to check out the new moves that you might have learned from the Aizu Tournament. Choose the second option (Customize menu), then choose the first one (Moves). Don't worry about equipping the sword you just received from your saviour, it has automatically been equipped. It's time to rest for now. Go back to the screen with five choices. Choose the first one (Action menu), and you'll see that the list seems to be longer! That's because the "Travel" option has been added. a. Travel (this is used to travel to other cities) b. Inn c. Tournament d. Jobs e. Tea House f. Aizu Dojo g. Blacksmith It's a good idea to go and rest at the inn for now because we will try to finally beat that Aizu Dojo before we travel to another city. Choose the second option (Inn), since it is late at night already, the only option is Skip to Next Day, so choose it. Choose the top choice again to start resting. You will notice that at the stats screen that is shown, you should have around 2469 Popularity Points already because you won the tournament. Also check out the "Min/Max Potential" section. Some maximum potentials have gone beyond 6000 already, and some minimum potentials have greatly increased! This is because the swords you get can affect your stats positively or negatively. Fortunately, the sword that your saviour gave you is a good sword. --------------------- The Aizu Dojo Day 11: --------------------- Your health should be 100% or near when we start the 11th day. It's time to once again challenge the Aizu Dojo! Make sure you have saved your game first. After saving, choose the first option (Action menu) and you'll see six choices. a. Travel b. Tournament c. Jobs d. Tea House e. Aizu Dojo f. Blacksmith Choose the fifth one (Aizu Dojo) and enter it and prepare for battle once again. This time, you'll have better stats and better moves to deal with them, especially their best student. You will fight against a normal student and the best student. The normal student shouldn't give you any problems at all. The best student might still seem scary, but if you have an attack that uses stabs, then that's your way to beat him. When the best student does his short upward slash, stab him. When the best student tries to rush in with attacks coming from the side, the block them. His sword will bounce away for a little while, giving you the time to stab him some more! Do this until he's knocked out. You'll be outside the dojo again. If you still have a lot of health, like over 90%, then go save the game. Return to the dojo and we will try to defeat another student and the best student once again! Be careful, sometimes the Master will be the one who you will fight after the normal student! For the character used here, we fought the best student twice this day. It's time to go back to the Inn and rest for now. Choose the first option (Action menu), and then take the third option (Inn). Choose the second option (Skip to Next Day) and choose the first option to start resting. --------------------- The Aizu Dojo Day 12: --------------------- By now you should know what the Aizu Dojo characters look like on the menu. Save first and then go to the Aizu Dojo. Defeat the normal student and the best student. You should get the hang of how to beat the best student already. Stab attacks really work wonders against him. The only problem left is the Master of the dojo. If you have more than 90% health left after beating the two guys, save outside the dojo and then come back in. This time, you will probably see a cutscene with the best student and the Master of the dojo kneeling in front of each other. You will have to fight them! Against the best student, just use stab attacks just like before. The Master is the hard one to beat because he really hits harder than the best student and he knows the secret technique of the Aizu Dojo where he will do a combo involving a jumping upward slash! The trick to beating the Master is by not using stab attacks. You have to use the attack which you learned from the Aizu Dojo itself. It's the one that has the unblockable "Block-Counter Strike" move, which is also a combo where you spin from right to left with attacks, ending with a downward slash. The usual attack pattern of the Master is he'll use middle side attacks to get you. You can use the "Block-Counter Strike" move of the Aizu Dojo style against him and he won't be able to escape that. Attacking him offensively is very risky because he can also do the same "Block-Counter Strike" move against you. Additionally, he can also use a type of throw against you, and you'll be stunned on the ground for a few seconds, just enough for him to stab you. It might take a few tries, but you will be able to beat him by blocking his attacks or "Block-Counter Striking" him. If you do manage to beat him, congratulations! It's time to return to your inn once again because we will be coming back to the Aizu Dojo the next day. --------------------- The Aizu Dojo Day 13: --------------------- Return to the Aizu Dojo and try to beat them up again, you might earn some more moves. What we want to do is completely defeat the dojo. The first fight will be against the best student. Use the stab attacks on him once more and you will probably end this fight without getting hurt yourself. After you beat him, you'll be outside the dojo. Go save if your health is above 90%. Return to the dojo and you will now fight the Master for the second time! The main trick to remember against the Master is use the moves you learned from the Aizu Dojo itself that has the unblockable "Block- Counter Strike" move. That is the only way to defeat this Master at our current status. Always stay around a 10 or 8 steps away from the Master's weapon. You'll know you're in the right range when his attacks can barely reach you. The reason why we want to be a little far from him is because his attacks come out fast. If you are a little further away when he starts his attack, then there's a better chance for you to block his attack in time in order to pull off your own "Block-Counter Strike" move, which he will not be able to avoid. Remember, do not try to make the first offensive move against him, this will only lead you to getting beaten by the same "Block-Counter Strike" move that you use against him. Also, always remain a few steps away from him to be able to have time to block his attacks. When you have defeated the Master for the second time, you will enter a cutscene where the two of your are talking about something. Return to your inn and choose Skip to Next Day. Don't forget to save. I think that since we are now able to defeat a real dojo master, we are ready to travel. *********************** Part 3 *********************** -------------------------- Journey to Ueno Day 14-21: -------------------------- Before we begin, It doesn't really matter how many days we spend in a certain area. It just so happens that our character was able to beat the Aizu Dojo Master twice already and we got that cutscene where he talked to us in private. You can actually opt to stay in Aizu and continue joining that Aizu Tournament or the Tea House Tournament. Just beware that you don't want to participate in a Tea House Tournament that involves real swords, because that will ruin your reputation and you won't be able to go inside dojos! Let us try to avoid taking jobs for now as well because we just aren't that ready yet. Anyway, let us begin our journey to Ueno. From your inn, choose the first option (Action menu), and choose the first option (Travel). You will then be presented with a map. You will notice that from Aizu, a glowing line will show you that you can travel to the next city, which is Ueno. Select that new area that is available to you and press O to enter Ueno. While on the way to Ueno, our character encounters another swordsman. There is some tension, but he will just ignore you and move along his way. You arrive in Ueno and end up at the inn. The inn keeper seems to tell you about the things that are available in Ueno. Meanwhile, outside, there's an old swordsman sitting at the side of the road. He seems to be at peace. After the scene, there's a hint about where to go. It's the light blue character in the text. You'll find it later in the Action menu. It is now evening after the cutscene with the old man. You will notice that you now have less money! Instead of 2 Ryo, you now have 1 Ryo and 8250 Mon (or somewhere near that). It seems to be the fee of staying at the inn. After saving your game, go back to the screen with five options. Choose the first one (Action menu), you will see seven choices. a. Travel b. Inn c. Tournament d. Jobs e. Tea House f. Ueno Dojo g. Sword Shop Choose the second option (Inn), and you'll discover that now, you have to pay a fee to stay at the inn! Skipping 1 time period using the inn costs 50 mon, while Skipping to Next Day will cost 500 Mon! It is now evening, let us check out the Tea House in Ueno. Choose the fifth option (Tea House). Enter the tea house. Inside the tea house, during the evening at Ueno, there will be five swordsmen inside. This means there is a Tea House Betting Game going on! --------------------------------- Tea House Betting Game Day 14-21: --------------------------------- The purpose of the Tea House Betting Game is to win swords from other swordsmen. In the tea house, you select an opponent. Press Triangle button to confirm that he is the one you want as your opponent, then the friendly duel shall begin. The two of you will use wooden swords to fight. The winner will take the loser's sword. You will be brought back inside the tea house after the fight, and you have a choice of choosing another swordsman to fight or quitting for the day. The swordsmen themselves shouldn't pose much of a threat to you, especially since you have already beaten a dojo master in Aizu! Go ahead and pick a fight. Try to beat all the guys in the Tea House Betting Game, you should have no problem taking out five of them. The unblockable "Block-Counter Strike" move from the Aizu Dojo really works well here, you can even finish all five of them without receiving damage! When you're done collecting all five swords, you'll be brought outside the tea house. Go ahead and save your game. After that, try to check out what swords you've got and how much they will improve your stats. On the screen with five options, choose the second one (Customize menu), then choose the second option (Weapons). You'll notice that you have a lot of text listed in the box, those are the swords that you've won so far. Go scroll down on each of them and you'll see on the box to the right how they will affect your stats. Most of the swords you get from the tea house aren't really good. Most will even make you weaker! Don't equip any of them. If you see that the stats on the right have a lot of blue arrows going down, then that sword is crap. What you want is a sword that improves your stats with red arrows going up, not something that makes you weaker. Since it is already very late at night, it's time to go back to your inn. Go back to the screen with five options. Choose the first one (Action menu) and then choose the third option (Inn), you only have two choices, take the first one (Skip to Next Day). Confirm to start resting. At the stats screen, it seems that our character has 2615 Popularity Points overall, but only has 50 Popularity Points in Ueno since you just arrived in the area and you're not well known. -------------------------- Ueno Old Man Event Day 22: -------------------------- At the start of the day, don't forget to save. We will now try to find the Ueno Old Man Event. Remember the cutscene we saw when we first arrived in Ueno about the old man? There was a highlighted text character. We will find that in our Action menu. Go choose the first option (Action menu), you'll notice that there are seven choices. a. Travel b. Tournament c. Jobs d. Tea House e. Ueno Dojo f. Sword Shop g. Ueno Old Man Event (it looks like a fork) Choose the seventh option (Ueno Old Man Event). You will then go to a temple like area but won't find him. You will be brought back to Ueno with five options. Let's try to go back to the temple to see if he's there now since the time period is now afternoon. Choose the first option (Action menu), then choose the seventh option (Ueno Old Man Event). Our character sees a meditating swordsman. They converse for a little while. After that, you will be brought back to Ueno in the evening. It's time to go back to your inn. Choose the first option (Action menu) then choose the second one (Inn). Choose the second option (Skip to Next Day). Don't forget to save your game after that. -------------------------- Ueno Old Man Event Day 23: -------------------------- It's time to go back to the Ueno Old Man Event. Choose the first option (Action menu) then choose the seventh one (Ueno Old Man Event). Nobody will be there again and you will be brought back to Ueno. Choose the first option (Action menu) then choose the seventh one (Ueno Old Man Event) since it is now afternoon. You still won't find anybody in the temple, but as you walk along the road, you'll find the old man sitting near a bunch of mini statues. It seems that our character decides to challenge the old man to a duel, but the old man remains calm. This earns our character's respect for the old man. After that small talk with the old man, it will be evening at Ueno once more. It's time to go back to the inn and rest for the day. Choose the first option (Action menu) then choose the second one (Inn). Choose the second one (Skip to Next Day) and don't forget to save your game afterwards. -------------------------- Ueno Old Man Event Day 24: -------------------------- It's another day and it's time to visit the Ueno Old Man Event again. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the last one (Ueno Old Man Event). At the temple, our character meets the old man (who seems to be a master swordsman in reality) and another man who seems to be his student. There seems to be a little discussion about your character being taught under the old man. Later on, our character sees the other student practicing. The student challenges our character, so we must prepare for battle once again! The student is actually faster and stronger than us as of the moment. Anyway, win or lose, the story progresses and we see the students watching the master meditate on the side of the road. Our character and the student seems to be getting along just fine by now. The master then talks to our character and says something that shocks our character. Our character then proceeds to have a man to man talk with the other student. Late night comes and our character then has to decide whether he has the spirit to fight the other student to the death or just go away. a. Triangle - Face the other student in a duel to the death. b. Square - go away. Just for the fun of it, let's press Triangle and let's try to kill the other student. The day of the duel finally arrives, and the master acts as the witness. It is now time to fight the other student. The strategy against the student is actually similar to the one we used against the best student of the Aizu Dojo. He is weak against stab attacks. Just block one of his attacks and then proceed to stab him. He shouldn't last long since you are duelling with live swords to the death. After you kill the other student, you will probably learn a move. The master will talk to you and will ask you for your name it seems. Just press the O button to give him the name you already have. You will then have two choices, press Triangle button to confirm that it is really your name, or press Square to change the name you give him. After you press Triangle button, the two of you will go on your separate ways. Save your game afterwards. You'll notice that the days have gone by so quickly! Anyway it's time to go back to your inn because we will be challenging the dojo in Ueno the next day. Choose the first option (Action menu). You'll notice that you can't find the Ueno Old Man Event character anymore because we have just finished it. Just choose the second option (Inn). Choose the second option (Skip to Next Day) and then confirm. On the stats screen, you will notice that you have around 115,615 General Popularity Points already! In Ueno, you'll have around 13,051 and your skills would have improved as well. ------------------ Ueno Dojo Day 128: ------------------ Wow, it seems like a hundred days have passed by since we started the Ueno Old Man Event. It's time to check what type of moves you got from the old man. Choose the second option (Customize menu), then choose the first option (Moves). You might notice that when you choose a slot, on the left box, there will now be three choices instead of the usual two. The top choice on the left box would just be one character. It seems that it represents "Special" combo moves. Hopefully you got that with your character as well. Go check it out if you like it. Anyway let's try to challenge the Ueno Dojo! Go back to the screen with five options, then choose the first one (Action menu), choose the fifth option (Ueno Dojo), and of course enter the dojo when prompted. The Ueno Dojo seems to utilize attacks that come downward. This means you can easily exploit this weakness by using the Aizu Dojo's "Block- Counter Strike" move. The students should be no match for you by now. Beat the first student and you will be brought back outside the dojo. Save your game if you want and check out what move got added to you. Go back inside the dojo. This is done the same way as you have always done when you were still challenging the Aizu Dojo, so you should already know how to do this. You will now have to defeat two or three students. Just use the same strategy as before. After you defeat them, it will be evening already outside the dojo. You might want to check out how many days are left before the Ueno Tournament begins. To do this, go choose the first option (Action menu), then choose the fourth option (Tournament). On our character here, it says there's just 2 days left before the tournament. Since we don't want to join the tournament while not at 100% health, we will spend two nights in the inn. Back at the screen with five options, choose the first one (Action menu) then choose the third one (Inn). You should know by now which options to choose to Skip to Next Day. --------------------- Resting Time Day 129: --------------------- While still in your room, choose the fourth option (Rest menu), then choose the last choice (Skip to Next Day). ------------------------ Ueno Tournament Day 130: ------------------------ This is just like the first Aizu Tournament you joined. There will be a number of fights which should be easy for you by now due to the number of effective moves we have learned during our travels so far. Choose the first option (Action menu) then choose the second one (Tournament). Win the tournament and pick a prize, also you get an additional 1 Ryo. If you're lucky, you might even learn a move or two. After the tournament, save your game and check out what new moves you've got if you wish. After that, it's time to rest and challenge the Ueno Dojo the next day. Choose the first option (Action menu), and then choose the third one (Inn). Just make it Skip to the Next Day. ------------------ Ueno Dojo Day 131: ------------------ When it's already the next day, it's time to visit the Ueno Dojo to continue challenging it. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose fifth menu (Ueno Dojo). Enter the dojo and prepare to fight. The first one is a battle against a normal student. He shouldn't be a challenge. The next one is against the Ueno Dojo's best student. The trick to beating him is to use the "Block-Counter Strike" move you learned from the Aizu Dojo. He isn't really a challenge at all with our current status. After beating the two, go save your game outside and return to the dojo (you should know how to do this by now). You will fight another student and the best student once more. Just use the same strategy against them, they're not a problem anymore. After defeating them, it's time to go back to the inn and rest, we'll come back to the dojo tomorrow. You already know how to go back to the inn. ------------------ Ueno Dojo Day 132: ------------------ Don't forget to save your game before going to the Ueno Dojo. Go to the Ueno Dojo and enter it (I hope you already are familiar with how the text for dojo looks like). With our character, he meets the best student inside, and the two begin to duel. Just beat him the same way we did from yesterday and you'll be outside the dojo again. Go save your game and if you learned a new move, then go check it out and see if it's good to use. Return to the dojo and he will introduce our character to the master. You will have another match against the best student. Just beat him against like before. After that, it will be evening so it's time to return to your inn. Don't forget to save. ------------------ Ueno Dojo Day 133: ------------------ Return to the dojo and you'll have to fight another normal student and then the best student. Go beat them up like before and save your game. Return to the dojo to continue. Beat up the student and the best student once again and the master will talk to you in a room. After that, it will be evening so it's best to return to your inn to rest. ------------------ Ueno Dojo Day 134: ------------------ After saving your game, go to the Ueno Dojo. You will only fight the best student for the first part. I'm sure you already know how to beat him, you can even finish him in less than 20 seconds now. Go save your game outside and then return inside the dojo. You will now have to fight the best student, and then the master afterwards! Beating the best student isn't a problem. The trick to beat the master is to use stab attacks against him. He will try to use quick head slashes at you, so you better maintain a range that is a few steps away from him. Also, don't get caught near him because he will do a karate throw on you and he'll stab you on the ground! Just keep stabbing him when he misses and he should be done for. After that, you might learn a move or two. Go back to the inn and save your game. Don't forget to check out moves you might want to use. ------------------ Ueno Dojo Day 135: ------------------ Return to the Ueno Dojo, we'll try to beat them completely. The first match will be against the best student. After beating him, save outside the dojo. Go back inside and you'll face the master again! Use stab attacks against him and be sure you are not near him because he will throw you to the ground. In the case that he tries to do a "Distracting Weapon Strike" on you, go press X+Forward to bump into him. This will stun him for a while, giving you a few seconds to stab him some more. After you beat him, the two of you will talk in a room again. Once it's over, go save outside the dojo. It's already evening and we have beaten the Ueno Dojo Master twice already. I guess we are now allowed to visit another city. From the screen with five options, choose the first one (Action menu), and then choose the second option (Travel). You will be presented a map. You'll notice that we can now travel to the area below Ueno. That place is called Edo. Enter it. *********************** Part 4 *********************** ----------------------- Journey to Edo Day 138: ----------------------- Upon reaching Edo, save your game. Saving the game will always be the same, I hope you are already used to doing it. On the screen with five options, go choose the first one (Action menu), and you will be surprised that there's a lot of things on the list! Hopefully, you will recognize that most of them are dojos (just look at the end of the text, they have the dojo character). This is a list of what they are. a. Travel b. Inn c. Tournament d. Jobs e. Tea House f. Sword Shop g. Clothes Shop h. Edo Dojo 1 i. Edo Dojo 2 j. Edo Dojo 3 k. Edo Dojo 4 Let's try to visit the Tournament area. Choose the third option (Tournament). It seems we need to wait two days for this. Let's go visit the Edo Dojo 1 for now. Choose the first option, then choose the eighth option (Edo Dojo 1). Enter it. Defeat the weak student and then go save outside the dojo. Return to the dojo. You will have to beat three students this time. After that, it will be evening. Go save your game. It's now time to rest at an inn. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the third option (Inn). Oh no! Inns at Edo cost so much for a one night stay! It's 1000 mon! Fortunately, we should have around 2 Ryo and 2000 Mon left. Let's pay for tonight since we'll win a tournament in 2 days which will give us 100 Ryo anyway. Go choose the second option (Skip to Next Day). ------------------- Edo Dojo 1 Day 139: ------------------- Make sure you have saved. We'll return to Edo Dojo 1. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the seventh option (Edo Dojo 1). Enter it. You will have to fight a student, and then the best student. The students are no problem since they are very slow and weak. The best student isn't a problem too. He usually uses a slash that goes up. You can just block it and then attack afterwards using middle slashes. After you beat them, you'll be outside the dojo. Save and return to the dojo. Defeat the student and the best student once again and you're done for the day, go back to the inn. Choose the first option (Action menu) then choose the third one (Inn). Just choose the second option (Skip to Next Day). ----------------------- Edo Tournament Day 140: ----------------------- The day has finally come! Our character will participate in the Edo Tournament where the best of the best will compete for 100 Ryo and a chance to become an official! From your room, choose the first option (Action menu) and then the second option (Tournament). You will first fight five opponents. They aren't really that challenging, but they will try to trick you unlike normal students. They are also strong, so try to not get hit. When you beat them all, you will automatically earn 100 Ryo. You will also have two options. a. Triangle - fight an official, win and you will also become an official! b. Square - continue travelling all around Japan. Choose Triangle and you'll fight an official. Now this official will be a challenge. He is fast and his hits really hurt. One thing to remember is, his attacks mostly come from above, so that means our "Block-Counter Strike" move from the Aizu Dojo will also work well against him. The only problem is, he is really fast, so you really have to time it well in order for it to work. In the event that you lose to this official, you will just be brought back outside of the tournament area. Just load a saved game before the tournament, beat the five other contestants, and then try to beat the official again so that you will be able to use your character as the "Saviour" in the future if you want. After you beat him, congratulations! Watch the "ending"! You can watch the credits or just skip it. Don't forget to save your game! You can continue playing using that saved game or you can create another character and use the one that just finished the game as your "Saviour". If you use your character as your "Saviour", then you also have access to his/her money as well as whatever swords, clothes, and accessories he might have! ------------------------------------------------------- Optional Edo Tournament Part 2 - Extra 100 Ryo Day 140: ------------------------------------------------------- This is an optional part, and it might be a glitch in the game. Go load the character that you just saved with. It should be the one in RED text at the loading screen. After loading, you will notice that you are back in your room and it is still Day 140 (if you have been sticking very closely to our character's guide), or whatever day it is you won the Edo Tournament. You can actually go back to the tournament area and fight again! This is your chance to earn another extra 100 Ryo! If your health is still good and you're confident enough to beat the official one more time, then go back to the tournament area. Choose the first option (Action menu) then the second one (Tournament). You will be brought back and allowed to join the tournament again! Fight the five contestants, and then when you have the two choices again, choose to press Triangle. Beat the official one more time using the same tactic that we've employed previously. After you win, you'll be asked to save again just like the first time you won the tournament. Go watch the "ending" again if you want. You should now have around 200 Ryo! After you have saved, load the game again using the RED saved game you just made. You'll find out that you can join the tournament again for a third time! If your health is still good, then go ahead and join! Anyway just try to do it until you think you can't beat the last guy anymore. Our character in the guide was able to do it 4 times, so we have 402 Ryo already. You should be able to do it as well, but 200 Ryo is also fine. When you're done exploiting this little trick to earn extra Ryo, then in your room, choose the fourth option (Rest menu) and choose the last one (Skip to Next Day). ----------------------------- Shopping For Clothes Day 141: ----------------------------- You should have at least 100 Ryo right now or more (if you did the optional Edo Tournament Part 2 Extra 100 Ryo Day 140 section). That means we can finally buy NEW CLOTHES or SWORDS! We also wouldn't have to worry about being able to afford staying at inns to skip to the next day! Good job! Let's go and buy some neat new clothes for our character first. From your room, choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the sixth option (Clothes Shop). Enter it. In the shop, you will have two choices. a. Buy Clothes b. Exit Choose the first one (Buy Clothes). You will then be presented with nine types of things you can buy. Feel free to browse them. When you like an item, press the O button to choose it, then you will have two choices. Take the top choice to buy the item. You will see two more choices. It's asking if you want to equip it now or later. It's up to you. Choose the top one to equip it, choose the second one to not equip it yet. Go buy a MASK or a hat as well. They're pretty cheap compared to some clothes. I bought a Demon Mask for our character (the one with horns). As for clothes, I bought the most expensive one, which costs 72 Ryo. The reason why we need to buy a MASK is because it enables us to participate in things such as taking jobs where you have to kill people without giving us bad reputation. We have to wear a mask whenever we want to take a job (and they all require us to kill people) so that our good reputation won't be stained. When you're done shopping (remember don't spend more than 1/4 of the total Ryo you got), then press X to exit the shopping screen, and then choose the second option (Exit) when you're facing the merchant again to get out of his shop. Since we still have some free time, let's go visit the Sword Shop. ---------------------------- Shopping For Swords Day 141: ---------------------------- From the clothes shop, choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the seventh option (Sword Shop). Enter it. Just like the clothes shop, you will have two choices. a. Buy Swords b. Exit Choose the first one (Buy Swords). You will see a list of swords he has available. On the right box is some sort of chart that shows the advantages and disadvantages of a certain sword. Let's just buy the most expensive sword to see how good it is. The most expensive currently is 28 Ryo. Go buy it. Exit the shop. Now it's time to see if there's a good sword for us to use! Outside the sword shop, choose the second option (Customize) and then choose the second option (Weapons). Go scroll on the available swords you have. You might notice that there seems to be lots of swords. Most of them must have come from the tournaments or dojos. Anyway, they all seem to bring down your stats, so don't mind equipping anything new, just stick to the one you have. Exit your sword inventory screen. It's evening now so it's time to rest! Go back to your inn. Choose the first one (Action menu) then choose the third one (Inn). Choose the second option (Skip to Next Day). Doesn't it feel good to be able to afford 1000 Mon for a night's stay at the inn without having to worry? ------------------- Edo Dojo 1 Day 142: ------------------- Go save your game. We're going to challenge Edo Dojo 1 again! Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the seventh one (Edo Dojo 1). Enter it of course and prepare to fight! Defeat the normal student followed by the best student. They're no match for our character now. Save your game outside the dojo when you're done, and then go back inside the dojo. The best student will face you again. Beat him up and you're done for the day. Go back to your inn. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the third one (Inn). Choose the middle choice (Skip to Next Day) of course. ------------------- Edo Dojo 1 Day 143: ------------------- Our character should have around 116,871 Popularity Points, and the number below it should be around 72. Our Minimum Potential should've reached 4000 or more by now. Our character even has one that has reached 5022 already! You're doing great! Now it's time to return to Edo Dojo 1. I'm sure you can find it yourself in the menu. Go inside the dojo and beat them up! The best student will fight you again. Just beat him using the same old method and then save outside the dojo. Come back inside to continue. You will fight a student and the best student once more. Finish them and then it will be evening. Go back to your inn and rest. ------------------- Edo Dojo 1 Day 144: ------------------- Don't forget to save your game. Go back to Edo Dojo 1. This time, the best student will introduce you to their master. Defeat the best student and save outside the dojo. Go back inside to fight again. After you beat him, return to your inn and skip to the next day. ------------------- Edo Dojo 1 Day 145: ------------------- Return to Edo Dojo 1 to fight. Defeat the best student once again and save outside. Go back inside and fight. Defeat the best student once again. This is getting repetitive! Return to your inn to rest and skip to the next day. ------------------- Edo Dojo 1 Day 146: ------------------- Save your game and return to Edo Dojo 1. Fortunately, this time, the master will notice that you've been beating up his best pupil for the last couple of days one sidedly. He'll let a normal student and the best student try to bet you again! Beat those two up to force the master to fight you! After beating those two as expected, the master will talk to you in private. This is it! The time to beat him is near! Once outside the dojo, go save your game. Go back inside and you'll find the best student trying to get revenge on you. Beat him up once more. After that, return to your inn and skip to the next day. ------------------------- Edo Dojo 1 Event Day 147: ------------------------- Save your game and return to the Edo Dojo 1. You might notice something being said that has a number on it. It's 9. Maybe it's some sort of counter for an event. Beat the student and the best student and then save your game outside. Go back inside the dojo and beat the best student. Return to your inn when you're done and skip to the next day. ------------------------- Edo Dojo 1 Event Day 148: ------------------------- Save and return to Edo Dojo 1. You'll notice the weird text again with a number, this time it is 8. Something is definitely going to happen! Anyway, go beat up everyone in the dojo. Save your game outside, then come in again. When you're done for the day, return to your inn and skip for the next day. ------------------------- Edo Dojo 1 Event Day 149: ------------------------- Save and return to Edo Dojo 1. Whatever is going to happen, you only have 7 days left. Go inside and beat everyone up. When it's evening, return to your inn and skip to the next day. ------------------------- Edo Dojo 1 Event Day 150: ------------------------- Just like before, save, beat everyone up in Edo Dojo 1, then when it's evening, return to your inn to skip to the next day. Only 6 days left for whatever's going to happen! ----------------------------- Edo Dojo 1 Event Day 151-155: ----------------------------- * From now on, I will be condensing dojo domination in as few sections as possible because they are very repetitive. The pattern is the same anyway and by now you should be used as to how things work. The same as yesterday, only 5 days left! ------------------------------------ Edo Dojo 1 Tournament Event Day 156: ------------------------------------ The day has finally come!!! After beating up the students of Edo Dojo 1, you will notice that our character should have most of his Minimum Potential at 5000 or more! This means we have grown even faster and stronger! Have faith in our character, he/she has really grown up very nicely! Don't forget to save your game! When you're done checking your things, go to Edo Dojo 1! Whoa! The best student of the dojo is waiting for our character! It seems that there is a tournament being held! Do your best and beat everyone in this Tournament Event! Nobody is really a match for our character, especially since our stats are really high! After winning the tournament, the person that has been receiving the most punishment these past few days will happily talk to you. I guess he feels that he's the reason why we became stronger. You will be automatically sent back to your inn. Save your game. ------------------------- Edo Dojo 1 Event Day 157: ------------------------- After winning the tournament, let's go back and visit Edo Dojo 1. At the dojo, our character meets with the master. They seem to be talking about a shocking issue! After that, the two of you will fight. Use the same tactic versus the master. Most of his attacks from from above and from the side. Use the "Block-Counter Strike" technique from the Aizu Dojo. You can also try to use stab attacks against him. Just be cautious because he's faster than the people you defeated in the tournament yesterday. After beating him, you will talk to each other again. Save your game and return to the dojo. You will now have to beat a normal student and then the best student. After that, you will talk to the best student again. After the little talk, go back to your inn and skip to the next day. Don't forget to save. ------------------------- Edo Dojo 1 Event Day 158: ------------------------- Let's return to the Edo Dojo 1 and see what's new. Upon arrival, the master starts talking to our character. We then go inside a room with another person who's wearing purple clothes. After a little while, the guy in purple leaves the room while our character and master continue chatting. Once outside, go save your game and return inside the dojo. Defeat the student and the best student. Return to your inn and save when you're done. ------------------------- Edo Dojo 1 Event Day 159: ------------------------- Return to Edo Dojo 1. There will be a meeting among the 5 of you, including the guy in purple clothes. He seems to be challenging our character! The fight will begin afterwards. The guy in purple will be using stab attacks along with some side slashes. Be sure you have moves that can do the "Block-Counter Strike" against his moves. Unfortunately, our Aizu Dojo "Block-Counter Strike" move won't work on this guy. He's probably the first real challenge you'll face. This guy can also use the one-handed sword techniques! It is better to stay away from him if you can. Stab attacks also seem to work well against him. The safest way to deal with him is to make him miss his stab attack. Making him miss his one-handed attacks is even better because those are slower than his stab attacks. Stab him at the right time and be patient and he will fall! After the battle, there will be another conversation and the loser seems unable to accept his loss! You will then be outside of the dojo. Go save the game and return inside the dojo. Once inside, you will have another duel against the best student. Fortunately, the best student is trash compared to the guy in purple! After your little duel, you will be walking back to your inn, but you will encounter the guy in purple on the road! The two of you will talk and when you're done, it will be late at night already. Go back to your in and skip to the next day. ------------------------- Edo Dojo 1 Event Day 160: ------------------------- Go back to Edo Dojo 1, but don't forget to save your game first! You will have a conversation with the best student again. I guess he's become some sort of like your best buddy in the dojo after beating him so much. You will also talk to the master about something and it will be shocking! Even more shocking is the length of the conversation... After the long talk with your master, you will be brought out to some kind of temple. It seems that the guy in purple has really challenged you to a duel to the death! Be prepared! Use the same method as before! Stay away from him and make him miss. Stab him when he is vulnerable. He should die faster this time because you will be using real swords. If you have a sheathed sword attack that has a long range, you might want to use that too when he misses using his one-handed attack. Once he is dead, it will be late night again. Go to your inn and skip to the next day. ------------------------- Edo Dojo 1 Event Day 161: ------------------------- Don't forget to save. Go back to Edo Dojo 1 and you'll fight against the best student for one more time. After beating him, you will have another talk. When you're outside, go save your game. Go back into the dojo. Beat up the best student once more and return to your inn and skip to the next day. ------------------------- Edo Dojo 1 Event Day 162: ------------------------- Go to Edo Dojo 1 after saving. You will finally get to fight the master! First, beat up the easy best student. On the next fight against the master, our "Block-Counter Strike" Aizu Dojo technique is very effective because most of his attacks come from above. The master shouldn't be a problem at all. Save your game outside after beating the master and then come back in. Beat the student and the best student. After that, go back to your inn and skip to the next day. ------------------- Edo Dojo 2 Day 163: ------------------- I think it's time to move on now. We've already beaten an event at the first Edo Dojo. Now, let's proceed to beat up the other remaining dojos! Let's go to Edo Dojo 2! From your room, choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the eighth choice (Edo Dojo 2). Enter it and prepare to fight. Their style isn't really that different and can be easily countered using our Aizu move. Beat up all the students and save outside the dojo. Go back in to beat them up some more! You will fight a normal student and then the best student. The best student uses some stab attacks, which is quite different from their usual students. He should still be slow and easy to take care of. Once you're done, return to your inn and skip to the next day. ----------------------- Edo Dojo 2 Day 164-169: ----------------------- Return to Edo Dojo 2 and beat them up some more. When it's evening, return to your inn and skip to the next day. * On day 169, their master still hasn't shown up. Maybe the previous tournament event has something to do with this. Anyway it's time to move on to Edo Dojo 3. ------------------------- Edo Dojo 3 Event Day 170: ------------------------- From your room, choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the second to the last choice (Edo Dojo 3). Enter it and beat them until day 179. At the end of the day, you will be talking to the guy in yellow (I'm not sure if he's the master of just the best student), but some guy in blue clothes will enter the dojo and the two of them will fight. The guy in the yellow will be stabbed and knocked down and the guy in blue will just walk away. Return to your inn and skip to the next day. ----------------------- Edo Dojo 3 Day 171-179: ----------------------- Keep returning to Edo Dojo 3 until day 179 and beat them up. This should let you learn almost all the moves they still keep. ------------------- Edo Dojo 4 Day 180: ------------------- On day 180, you'll notice in the stats screen that our Minimum Potential has really gone high, there is even one that's over 6,000 already! Our Popularity Points should be around 140,377 and the number below it is 23,622. It seems that we have already learned all we can from Edo Dojo 3, so let's proceed to Edo Dojo 4. From your room choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the last one (Edo Dojo 4). When we arrive, some guy will be blocking our way! They won't let us in for some reason! I guess it's time to move on to a new city. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the second one (Travel). Let's travel back to Ueno and see if the road from there can lead us to another area. From our current location which is Edo, choose the area directly above us (Ueno). Enter it. *********************** Part 5 *********************** ------------------------ Passing By Ueno Day 183: ------------------------ Nothing seems to be new here. It might be a good idea to visit the blacksmith at Aizu to have our sword returned to 100%. Remember that we used our sword in a battle against that guy wearing purple in Edo? When we use our real swords, it gets damaged. If it gets damaged too much, it might break! It's better to keep it at 100% as often as possible, you never know when we might need our sword only to have it break! From Ueno's menu screen, choose the first one (Action menu) and then choose the first one (Travel). It seems that we're not yet allowed to travel elsewhere except Ueno, Edo, and Aizu. Maybe it has something to do with our Popularity Points. Anyway, from the map, choose the one above Ueno (Aizu) and enter it. --------------------------- Blacksmith of Aizu Day 190: --------------------------- Save your game right now. From the menu, choose the first one (Action menu) and then choose the last one (Blacksmith). You will have three choices. a. Appraise Sword b. Fix Sword c. Exit We're here to have our sword fixed first. Choose the second one (Fix Sword). A box will show up, listing all swords that ened fixing. Since we've only been using the sword given to us by our saviour, then it will be the only one there. Press O to have the blacksmith fix our sword. It costs 1 Ryo, which shouldn't be a problem for us. After that, let's try to have him appraise our current sword collection! The three choices will be shown again, choose the first one (Appraise Sword). You will see another list with around 9 swords (the other swords, we probably won from tournaments or events, I'm not sure). Press O on each sword to have him appraise them. This service costs 3 Ryo each. Maybe it will improve the stats of our sword collection. Just keep appraising all the swords because we can afford it anyway. When you've appraised all the swords that we have, then it's time to exit that Blacksmith's place. Choose the third option (Exit). Outside, let's check the stats of our swords again. Choose the second option (Customize menu) and then choose the second one (Weapons). Scroll down and see if any of the swords will give us more stats. Unfortunately, nothing seems to be worth equipping yet, but go ahead and experiment if you wish. Wear them, it's up to you. --------------------------- Visit To Aizu Dojo Day 190: --------------------------- Since we have some spare time, let's try to visit the Aizu Dojo again and see if anything is going on. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the last one (Aizu Dojo). The master will talk to you again. When you're done it will be evening. It's time to rest at your inn. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the third one (Inn) and skip to the next day. --------------------------- Visit To Aizu Dojo Day 191: --------------------------- Return to Aizu Dojo and beat up everyone, go back to your inn when it's evening and skip to the next day. --------------------------- Visit To Aizu Dojo Day 192: --------------------------- Go back to the Aizu Dojo and beat up the students. Save your game and then beat the best student and the master one more time. Nothing else seems to be happening, it's probably time to win some more prizes from the Aizu Tournament! Remember they were letting us choose the prizes during tournaments? Let's try to win some more! It's now evening outside the dojo. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the fourth option (Tournament). On the tournament area, it says we still have 8 more days before it begins. Anyway it's time for us to rest. Since we have 8 free days, it might be a good time for us to try getting our first job tomorrow. Return to your inn and skip to the next day. ------------------ First Job Day 193: ------------------ This will be the first day that we take on a job just for the experience of it and the extra cash (although I'm sure we have no financial troubles currently). From your inn, choose the second option (Customize menu) and choose the third option (Clothes). Choose the mask and equip it by pressing the O button. You'll know it has been equip when there are red characters that appear near the name of the mask. Anyway go back to the screen with five options and make sure you have saved your game. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the third option (Jobs). Go inside. Press the Triangle button when you are presented with two choices and then you will see three more options. a. Jobs b. Change Clothes c. Exit Choose the first one (Jobs) and since this is your first time, you will only see two jobs available for you to take. On the left box, you will see information about the job. The upper section tells you how much money you'll earn when you successfully complete the job. The second section tells you how hard the job is. You will notice there are red check marks. I think the more red check marks there are, the harder the job is. Anyway, the available jobs seem to be random, so let me explain here the possible jobs that you can get as well effective ways on how to deal with them. By the way, before you begin, make sure you really are wearing a mask! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------- A. Bodyguard on the Road You will be walking along with someone when suddenly a bunch of people will try to ambush you. Your client will fall on his butt, obviously afraid that he might get killed, he won't even be able to run away! Sometimes, you will have to guard the client who is riding a small box which is being carried by cowardly servants (who have the brains to run away when the killers arrive). The most important thing to remember in bodyguard missions is to always make sure nobody gets close to your client! Stay close to your client, preferably just by a few feet and make the enemy go after you. Make sure they don't surround you, so try to make them line up in front of you or something else as long as they won't be able to attack from all possible directions. The move that we learned from the Aizu Dojo is going to be effective in jobs. It is the technique where you spin from right, and then left, and then ending the attack with a downward slash. It is also the one that has the Aizu's "Block-Counter Strike" move. The reason we want to use this in jobs is because it covers a lot of range, and the attack area is wide! With this move, it is possible to kill four enemies with just one swipe! Another good thing about this technique is, you are moving all around the place while you attack, making you harder to hit. Just be careful, you have to do this attack when you're sure nobody will be attacking for a few seconds. Just kill every enemy that comes and you'll be done. Later on in the game when you have progressed with this type of mission, the enemies will also be a lot tougher. You will have to also fight archers and advanced swordsmen! B. House Guard You will either be inside the house or just outside the door when a bunch of bad guys will show up. There's really nothing to be worried about here, so you can take your time and play with the attackers. C. Jail Guard You will have to guard the jail that is hiding someone from the attackers who are trying to get to him. Just kill every attacker and you're done. D. Gate Guard A bunch of bad guys will form just across the bridge from where you are guarding a gate, and they intend to bring it down! There will be around three guys with giant hammers who will rush in and try to break the gate! When you first start, you can move forward and then take out everyone who comes rushing in. Be sure to keep an eye on the guys that have giant hammers and kill them quickly before they reach the gate! It will take them around 5 or 10 smashes to the gate before they succeed! After you have killed everyone who is trying to rush in, move forward and go to the other side of the bridge and move forward again beyond the carts. You will encounter a boss! The style the boss uses seems to be random, so just deal with him carefully. Remember that you are using real swords, that means you can use sheathed sword attacks. Kill him and you have won! E. Rescue Mission Rescue missions are fun! Sometimes you have to invade a big mansion-like place. There will be hundreds of enemies who will try to kill you! Sometimes you will have to rescue someone from the forest, and there will be a lot of ninjas who throw projectiles as well! During rescue missions that happen in mansions, you can either kill everyone in front of you or you can just run past them and go through the gate. It will load the next section of the area and you would have probably gotten through without getting hurt yourself. The problem is, for mansion areas, the second section will still usually be outdoors, and there will be locked gates this time. This means you have no other choice but to kill all enemies in that area. Once you have done that, the gates will open again and a bunch of new enemies will rush in to kill you. Make your way going "up" and you'll eventually find a door. This will of course lead you inside the mansion. Be careful while inside! There are many paper doors and enemies will cut through them! Inside the mansion, it is possible to just run straight to the next section if you have gotten familiar with the layout. Just cut the white paper doors and run! It might seem like a maze at first, but after a few tries you should be able to go through it just by running and cutting down white doors and you'll be sent to the next section. The final section is usually the boss who guards the poor kidnapped victim. The styles are different, so just use caution when dealing with him. Hopefully you didn't get hurt too much while making your way to him. Another thing to remember is, the more you do this type of mission, the harder it gets. There will be archers waiting for you, and then later on enemies with rifles! When you reach the really difficult level for this, after you kill the boss, you will have to run back all the way going out of the mansion! The same goes for the forest rescue missions, but there are no other sections. You just reach a boss at the end, kill him, then go all the way back. About ninjas, you can block their projectiles if you time it right. F. Assassination Assassination missions are just the same as the previous missions. You have to kill their clients and then run away! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------- After you have done your first mission, you will be sent outside. Save your game. You'll also notice that it's already day 194! Let's go pay a visit to the blacksmith and make sure our sword is back to 100% because we'll be trying out a serious live tournament later on. ------------------------ Aizu Blacksmith Day 194: ------------------------ From the job place where we just saved, choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the last choice (Blacksmith). Enter it. Choose the second option (Fix Sword). Let him fix your sword and we're done. Choose the third option (Exit). Outside the blacksmith's place, save your game. After saving, choose the fourth option (Rest menu) and choose the first option (Skip 1 Time Period). This is random, but if you rest outside of your inn, some bandits might try to attack you. Simply kill them all, they're no match for you. When you're back to Aizu's screen with five options, you might want to save again. Anyway go choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the fifth choice (Tea House). Enter it. ------------------------------------ Deadly Tea House Tournament Day 194: ------------------------------------ Since we are still wearing our mask, we can now participate in the Deadly Tea House Tournament! That means we will be using real swords against people, and the survivor will be the winner! When you enter the tea house, you will be shown two choices. Press Triangle, and then Triangle again when needed. You will then pay a fee of 1 Ryo to enter this deadly version of the tea house tournament. This should be a good way to earn some extra Ryo. The more you win, the more the prize money after each fight increases! My only advise is to quit the tournament when your health is at 50% or lower because you'll have a high chance of dying with one good hit from the enemy. We only did this for the experience, so once you're done, let's check out how many days we have left until the Aizu Tournament. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the fourth choice (Tournament). It will say 6 days left. Let's just spend the time at the inn and rest until tournament day. ---------------------------------------- Waiting For Aizu Tournament Day 195-199: ---------------------------------------- First of all, don't forget to unequip your mask! From your room choose the second option (Customize menu) and then choose the third one (Clothes). Go to the mask section and press O button to unequip it. While in your room, just keep choosing the fourth option (Rest menu) and choose the last one all the time (Skip to Next Day) until you reach day 200. ------------------------ Aizu Tournament Day 200: ------------------------ Beat everyone up and after winning, choose one of the long named prizes. You'll notice that there are just two of them now. Let's try to win the tournament again next time. Go back to your inn for now and skip to the next day. Don't forget to save! ---------------------------------------- Waiting For Aizu Tournament Day 201-209: ---------------------------------------- Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the second one (Tournament), it will say we have 9 days left before the tournament starts again. Let's return to the inn and skip until it's day 209. ------------------------ Aizu Tournament Day 210: ------------------------ Go to the tournament area and defeat everyone. After you win, you'll notice there's only one prize left. Return to the inn and save your game. We'll see what other prizes we can have next time on the Aizu Tournament. ---------------------------------------- Waiting For Aizu Tournament Day 211-219: ---------------------------------------- From your room after saving, choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the second one (Tournament). You'll find out that we only have 9 days left before another Aizu Tournament begins. Return to your inn and keep skipping until day 219. ------------------------ Aizu Tournament Day 220: ------------------------ Go to the tournament and defeat everyone once more. You'll discover that they really only have one prize left to give you. Anyway since there doesn't seem to be anything left in Aizu to get for now, let's go to the blacksmith and let him fix our sword, just to make sure it's at 100%. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the last one (Blacksmith). You might want to choose the first option (Appraise Sword) because our character somehow got a new sword. After appraising whatever sword you have, then choose the second option (Fix Sword) and let him do his job. When you're done, exit the blacksmith's place and let's travel back to Ueno and win their tournament! But before we do that, go check your swords if you were able to appraise some, our character just got a sword that actually increased all the stats without dropping any! It's a very good sword! Equip it of course. Outside the blacksmith's place, choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the second one (Travel). On the map screen, you'll notice that we can now travel from Aizu to Edo! But let's go visit Ueno first and win whatever prizes their tournament have. Choose the area directly below Aizu (Ueno) and enter it. *********************** Part 6 *********************** ------------- Ueno Day 227: ------------- Save your game upon arrival. Let's go check how many days we have left before the Ueno Tournament begins. Choose the first option (Action menu) then choose the third one (Tournament). It will say we have 3 days left. Since we have some free time, let's go visit the Sword Shop and buy all of their swords. We're pretty much loaded anyway. We'll try to appraise the swords later when we get the chance. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then the last one (Sword Shop). Enter it and buy the swords that he keeps. He should have around 4 of them. After that, exit the shop and let's go to the inn and let's skip until day 229. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the third one (Inn). Don't forget to save. ------------------------ Ueno Tournament Day 230: ------------------------ From your room, choose the first option (Action menu) and then the second one (Tournament). Proceed to beat everyone and take the prize with the long text. Go back to your inn and save. ---------------------------------------- Waiting for Ueno Tournament Day 231-239: ---------------------------------------- Keep skipping to the next day until day 239 inside your room. ------------------------ Ueno Tournament Day 240: ------------------------ Go to the tournament and beat everyone up. There's only one prize left so take it. It's now evening, if you still have good health, then let's visit the tea house for some betting game. Let's collect some swords! Don't forget to save first. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the fifth one (Tea House). Enter it. Defeat all five strangers and collect their swords. They should be no match against you at all. After this, it's time to travel to Edo once more. Let's go get an extra 100 Ryo because we'll be buying some more swords along the way, and we'll have the blacksmith at Aizu appraise them. We'll also do some betting games and take their swords! Choose the first option (Action menu) then choose the second one (Travel). You'll notice on the map that we can now travel going to the left. We won't go to Owari yet, so let's choose Edo, which is the area directly below Ueno. Enter it. *********************** Part 7 *********************** ------------ Edo Day 243: ------------ Save your game upon arrival. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the third one (Tournament). It will say we have 7 days left before the Edo Tournament begins. We have some spare time so let's go check out the Sword Shop. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the sixth option (Sword Shop). Enter it. Buy all of the available swords if you can, we'll be getting back the money we've been spending at the Edo Tournament anyway. After we're done shopping for swords, let's go check Edo Dojo 4 and see if they will let us in this time. They didn't allow us before! Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the last one (Edo Dojo 4). We get greeted by the ugly guy before and we not yet allowed to go in. I guess this means we can just go to the Tea House and spend a little time there in the evening collecting swords! Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the sixth option. Enter it. We'll find out that there aren't any betting games available yet because nobody else is around except for the shop keeper. Press Square button to go outside of the Tea House. Outside, you'll notice that it has become darker. It's already evening. Go back inside the Tea House. Finally, there are people to play the betting game with! Beat them all up and collect their swords. After taking their swords, it's time to return to the inn. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the third one (Inn). Keep choosing to skip to the next day until it's day 249. ----------------------- Edo Tournament Day 150: ----------------------- From your room, choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the second one (Tournament). Defeat your five opponents. When you are given the two choices, press the Square button instead. I think it will tell the officials that you want to continue travelling around Japan. After that, go save your game. At least we have an extra 100 Ryo to spend again. After the tournament, it's time to go back to Aizu to have the blacksmith appraise all the swords that we've collected so far. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the second one (Travel). On the map screen, choose the one on the upper right corner (Aizu), you should know that since it's where we started our game from. ------------- Aizu Day 259: ------------- Upon arrival, go save your game. After that, go choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the last one (Blacksmith). Inside the blacksmith's place, go choose the first option (Appraise Sword) and let him appraise all the new swords we have collected. After that, exit the place and save outside. Go check if any of your new swords would bring up our stats. When you're done checking, it's time to leave for Ueno. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the second one (Travel). Choose the area below Aizu (Ueno) and enter it. ------------- Ueno Day 266: ------------- Upon arrival, choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the first one (Travel). We are going to Owari, a new place! On the map screen, choose the area to the left of both Ueno and Edo, that is Owari. Enter it. *********************** Part 8 *********************** ------------------------- Owari Tournament Day 280: ------------------------- Go save your game upon arrival. Let's go check the tournament area and see how long we have to wait until the Owari Tournament. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the third option (Tournament). Surprise! We arrived exactly on the Tournament Day! Enter it and defeat everyone. Take the prize with long text. It seems that there are still three prizes left. Anyway, go save your game after the tournament. Let's visit the sword shop since we still have some time left. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the seventh one (Sword Shop). Buy all of the swords. They should be a bit expensive, but we can afford them. After buying out all of the swords, it's time to rest. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the third one (Inn). Save your game. ------------------------- Owari Dojo 1 Day 281-289: ------------------------- We only have 9 days left before the next Owari Tournament, so it's best to spend the time dominating the two dojos in Owari. We'll take on Owari Dojo 1 first. From your room, choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the fifth option (Owari Dojo 1). Beat everyone up. Return to your inn when you're done in the evening and skip to the next day. You might notice that your stats might go down a little, but don't worry, it's just by one point and the affected stats are those that you have maximized already. Yes, we already have reached that point where our character has multiple stats that got maxed already! Congratulations! Anyway continue beating Owari Dojo 1 until you beat the master, which should happen at around day 286. Anyway just beat the dojo until 289, you might learn an extra move or two. ------------------------- Owari Tournament Day 290: ------------------------- From your room, choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the second one (Tournament). Defeat everyone again and take another long named prize. Return to your inn when you're done. Two more prizes left, so we'll have to wait for another Owari Tournament. ----------------------- Owari Dojo Day 291-299: ----------------------- From your room, choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the last option (Owari Dojo 2). Defeat them all until day 299. Don't forget to return to your inn every evening and save. ------------------------- Owari Tournament Day 300: ------------------------- Beat everyone up just like in the previous tournament. After this, we have to beat it one more time to get the last prize. Anyway, when you're outside agian, go save your game. We'll wait ten days again before the next Owari Tournament. Let's go to the tea house and spend a little time beating people up in a friendly tournament. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the fifth one (Tea House). Enter it. Defeat as much as you can, just quit when your health is below 50%. If you really are good and lucky, you might be able to actually beat 101 opponents! At the end, you will have to fight a samurai ghost, and a blacksmith as well! Against the samurai ghost, you have to be careful! He seems to have the same moves that you do. The trick to beating him is to make him miss, and then attack him with all you've got. He won't be a problem if he misses. If he does hit you, even with wooden swords, he will hurt you a lot! As for the blacksmith, it might be a shock to actually fight him. He uses two weapons on his hands. The best way to deal with him is to make him miss and then hit him with combos just like you did with the samurai ghost! Congratulations, you have no unlocked the blacksmith and you can play as him in VS Mode! When you're done, go back to your inn and keep choosing to skip to the next day until day 309. ------------------------- Owari Tournament Day 310: ------------------------- Go to the tournament area and beat everyone up. Take the final prize and save your game. We're going to a new area now called Kyoto. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the second one (Travel). To the left of our current area (Owari), you'll find out that we are able to choose between two new places to visit. The one on the top is called Kyoto. The one on the bottom is called Iga. Choose the one on top (Kyoto) and enter it. ****************************************** Part 9-A Shinsengumi Story ****************************************** * On this section, it will lead to a DEAD END. I advise you to make a SEPARATE SAVE FILE right now if you wish to proceed with the Shinsengumi Story. When you finish the Shinsengumi Story, even if you load it after saving, it will just put you back to where you have to kill the Shinsengumi Final Boss and you won't be able to continue your journey all over Japan. If you wish to continue travelling around Japan, then proceed to Part 9- B -------------------------------- Kyoto Shinsengumi Event Day 315: -------------------------------- Upon arrival, there will be a cutscene where two swordsmen are speaking. After this, go save your game. When you're done saving, let's check out the Kyoto Dojo first. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the sixth one (Kyoto Dojo). Beat up everyone inside and it'll be evening when you're done. It's time to go back to your inn. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the third one (Inn). On the way to the inn, you will be confronted by a bunch swordsmen! Kill them all, they shouldn't be hard. After that, another cutscene will occur. Three more swordsmen will show up, but they seem to be good. During the converstation, a text will be highlighted with skyblue color. Take note of that. After they leave, an old man will talk to our character. After the converstation, you will reach the inn. Choose to skip to the next day. -------------------------------- Kyoto Shinsengumi Event Day 316: -------------------------------- After saving, go choose the first option (Action menu). You'll notice there's another option added to the list. It's the text that was highlighted in your converstation with the three good people last night! Choose the last one (Kyoto Event). You will be greeted by a guy and he will let you in. There will be a meeting inside. You will be presented two choices. Press Triangle and you will fight someone. After beating him easily, the meeting will continue. You will suddenly have a different outfit, which is blue and it looks like the clothes the other guys are wearing. It seems you got recruited into their group! After that, you'll be back in your room. Go save your game. After saving, go choose the first option (Action menu) and you'll find that you only have two choices! Go choose the first one (Duty). It seems like it means duty for your group. It will became late at night and you will be out on the streets with the guy wearing the black uniform. You will then talk inside a restaurant. After that, you will be meeting with someone in a white uniform. After the talk, you will be brought back to your inn. Save your game. -------------------------------- Kyoto Shinsengumi Event Day 318: -------------------------------- Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the second one (Training). This really seems to be a training option because you will fight some guy in the same uniform. He is just as good as a master actually! In order to beat the guy in blue, make him miss and then attack him with combinations. Be careful! If you use the Aizu "Block-Counter Strike" on him, he will actually make you flip over! This is the first time we have encountered someone being able to have an escape from the Aizu "Block- Counter Strike" technique! Anyway you should be able to beat him with our current stats (which are mostly maxed out by now). After you beat him, you will have two choices. a. Continue b. Quit When you feel you have learned all the moves that you can from him, then just choose the second one (Quit). When you're done training, go save your game in your room. After saving, go choose the first option (Duty). You will be in another meeting with your group. It seems that you are discussing something about your mission for tonight. Later on, you will invade an area with a lot of swordsmen! Use your spinning Aizu technique and clear them out. There's just a lot of them, but they won't really be able to hurt you if you're careful. After that, your poor bald groupmate will get ambushed from behind by some guy in a purple outfit. You will now have to fight him! The guy in the purple outfit isn't really special. He uses stab attacks and some more that comes from above. Just make him miss and then attack him with combos. Another good idea is to attack him using a sheathed sword technique, especially if you have one that can do multiple hits! He should die fast. After avenging your groupmate, you will be back in your room. -------------------------------- Kyoto Shinsengumi Event Day 319: -------------------------------- Save your game first. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the first one (Duty). You will be patrolling the streets on a clear day when suddenly, a guy in dirty ugly clothes will try to ambush you! Fortunately, our character's overtrained reflexes allows him to detect such things, so he survives. Back-up soon arrives and the attacker chickens out! You will be back in your room. Save your game. Choose the first option (Action menu) and you'll notice there will still be two choices but the second one is new. Choose the second option. You will then patrol the streets at night. Kill anybody who attacks you. After this you will be back in your room. Save your game. -------------------------------- Kyoto Shinsengumi Event Day 320: -------------------------------- Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the first one (Duty). You will be having another meeting with the group. While out on a rainy day, the guy who tried to ambush you a few days back will face you again! You will now have no escape, it's time to fight to the death! This guy's attacks usually come from the side and from above. Just make him miss and then attack him with your combos. He's not as good as you think he is. I guess that's why he was trying to ambush you from behind before, because he knew he's no match for you! After killing him, your groupmates will arrive and you will be brought back to your room. -------------------------------- Kyoto Shinsengumi Event Day 322: -------------------------------- After saving your game, go choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the first one (Duty). You will have a meeting with your group and then you will begin to raid a place. On the first area, some enemies will cut through doors. Dispose of them. Go inside the rooms and find some more doors. Cut the doors and you will discovered some more enemies hiding! Kill them all! Whenever you enter a room, make sure you check it and cut open the doors and kill everybody. When you're done on the ground floor, it's time to move up. Go up the stairs and kill some more enemies. Make sure to go inside the room just in front of the stairs when you go up. Explore the second floor and cut open the doors and kill everyone. After you have annihilated them, one person will try to escape and our character will run after him. When you reach him, it's time to fight! The guy is really very easy to kill. He cannot be compared to any "boss" you have beaten so far. Just make him miss and then attack him with combos. After he's dead, you will be returned to your room. Go save. After saving, go choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the first one (Duty). It seems that everybody's away, so our character decides to go roam the streets. As always, you will encounter a bunch of villains, go kill them. After that, you will be with your groupmate once more. There will be some screaming so you will investigate. You'll suddenly find yourself surrounded by more bad guys, but since they are weak, you quickly dispose of them. Later on, our character talks to someone and then goes back to the headquarters to think about something. You will then be returned to your room. -------------------------------- Kyoto Shinsengumi Event Day 323: -------------------------------- Save your game and then choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the first one (Duty). You and a groupmate who is wearing white will be patrolling in the evening, but some more villains will show up to ambush you! You're tasked to deal with the goons while your friend deals with the boss. Kill everybody! After that, the enemy boss will run away because he got badly hurt, but your friend will fall afterwards. You will then be returned to your room. Save your game. -------------------------------- Kyoto Shinsengumi Event Day 324: -------------------------------- After you have saved, go choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the first one (Duty). You will have a meeting about something. The old man you were with last night isn't present, he must've died. You and a friend will then guard something and talk some more. Later that night, the entire group has been assembled again on the street, you are preparing to capture or kill the people responsible for the death of your comrade. As you start to launch your attack, another of your friends fall! One of your comrades then deals with the goons as you face the boss. The boss is pretty easy. Just like before, make him miss and use combos on him until he dies. I guess thugs like him really have no skill! After your revenge, your friend who collapsed dies. You have a meeting with the group again, with the leader very mad about the deaths of your comrades. You will then be sent back to your room. Save your game. ------------------------------------ Kyoto Shinsengumi Event Day 325-326: ------------------------------------ Choose the first one (Action menu) and choose the first choice (Duty). You will be out at night with the leader. You will just talk and that's it. You'll be back in your room. Go save. Choose the first option again (Action menu) and choose the first one (Duty). You will then visit one of your comrades. Wow, your friend survived! Your friend didn't die after all! After the visit, the entire group will be on the move again to clean up the streets. Go ahead and kill all the bad guys now. You will be brought back to your room after killing them all. Save your game. -------------------------------- Kyoto Shinsengumi Event Day 328: -------------------------------- Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the first one (Duty). You will have to fight again and clear the streets. Later on, you'll discover that the real leader has also survived! There's a lot of talk within the group. You'll be out again by evening. On the street, you'll meet another swordsman who will say a lot of things. After that, you'll report back to the headquarters and you'll be sent back to your inn. Save your game. -------------------------------- Kyoto Shinsengumi Event Day 332: -------------------------------- Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the first one (Duty). You will be out in the evening again with your comrades. Suddenly fires will break out! You will rush in to a building. Kill every bad guy you encounter and make it to the second floor. Cut the door to the left on the second floor and enter it. You will find the swordsman that you encountered a few days back. It seems he likes fire! Anyway it can't be avoided, you will have to kill him. Be careful because he uses a "Weapon Distracting Strike" technique and he will stab you. He is fast and strong, so don't let him hit you. Another problem is that the area you are fighting in is small. Don't worry, the flames can't hurt you. Just make him miss and then do some combos on him. Make sure you stay away from him if your combo doesn't kill him right away because he might do his own combo on you, and you'll most likely die! After killing him, it seems that the entire Kyoto is burning! You have reached another ending in the game, congratulations! Save your game (hopefully in a separate file). ************************ Part 9-B ************************ -------------------- Kyoto Event Day 315: -------------------- Upon arrival, there will be a cutscene where two swordsmen are speaking. -------------------- Kyoto Event Day 316: -------------------- After saving, go choose the first option (Action menu). You'll notice there's another option added to the list. It's the text that was highlighted in your converstation with the three good people last night! Choose the last one (Kyoto Event). You will be greeted by a guy and he will let you in. There will be a meeting inside. You will be presented two choices. Triangle - Join Shinsengumi Square - Don't Join Shinsengumi Press Square so you won't join them. You will then be sent back outside of their place. We still have some time to explore, let's try the Tea House and let's try to win some more swords for us. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the sixth option (Tea House). Enter it. Beat everyone inside and we're done. Go back to your inn. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the third one (Inn), of course, skip to the next day. ----------------------- Kyoto Dojo Day 317-319: ----------------------- It's time to beat the Kyoto Dojo! Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the fifth one (Kyoto Dojo). Beat them all up until day 319. Return to your inn every evening and save of course. ------------------------- Kyoto Tournament Day 320: ------------------------- Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the second one (Tournament). Beat them all and claim the prize with the long text. Two prizes left! Return to your inn and skip to the next day. ----------------------- Kyoto Dojo Day 321-329: ----------------------- Save your game. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then the fifth one (Kyoto Dojo). Beat them all up. By now, even dojo masters aren't a match for our character's superior stats and moves collection! ------------------------- Kyoto Tournament Day 330: ------------------------- Just like before, beat up everyone and take the prize with the long text. Return to your inn and save. -------------- Kyoto Day 331: -------------- Let's try a friendly tournament at the tea house, maybe we'll find something interesting! Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the fourth (Tea House), enter it. After a few wins, you should have gotten a few more popularity points and maybe some moves that you still didn't have before. After that, go back to your inn and skip to the next day. ------------------ Kyoto Day 332-339: ------------------ In your room, keep skipping until it's day 339. ------------------------- Kyoto Tournament Day 340: ------------------------- Beat everyone up again and take the final prize. Save your game. Now it's time to travel to Iga! Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the second one (Travel). On the map screen you will see Iga which is directly below where we are. Go there and enter it. While on the way to Iga, our character will get ambushed by some swordsmen! Fortunately, some guy with a wooden sword who seems tough will beat the crap out of them and scare the others away. *********************** Part 10 *********************** ---------------- Iga Day 342-349: ---------------- Save your game upon arrival. Let's start beating up the Iga Dojo! Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the sixth one (Iga Dojo). By now you should know what the text for "Inn" looks like. Just return to the inn every evening. ----------------------- Iga Tournament Day 350: ----------------------- Beat everyone and if you've followed our guide up to here, you'll be surprised that the only prize left is the one with short text! I guess the prizes were actually "passes" to other locations, maybe the short one is a sword. Anyway after taking your prize, return to the inn, skip to the next day and save your game. ---------------- Iga Day 351-388: ---------------- Since there is a blacksmith around, let's go and have him appraise the swords we have collected so far. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the last one (Blacksmith). Ask the blacksmith to appraise all the swords that you have and fix whatever needs fixing. Exit the place and save. Since our cash is running low from all the spending that we've been doing, it's time to do a few jobs. Before that, let's go back to the inn, but choose the first option so that we will only skip 1 time period. In your room, save the game. We have to use a MASK. Choose the second option (Customize menu) and choose the third one (Clothes). Go to the mask section and wear one. Now we're ready to take a job. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the third one (Jobs). Take any job. Keep taking jobs until you get one that has VERY long text and the reward is 75 Ryo. That is a special job that is related to an event. You will then fight a bunch of bad guys on the road. You will then have a showdown against a guy with the top of his hair missing. There's really not much strategy against this boss. Most of his attacks come from above. The easiest way to deal with him is to make him miss, then flood him with your combos. He might have a somewhat longer health supply than most of the people you have beaten so far. He will die eventually after around 4 or 5 combos from you. Save your game and continue taking jobs. Don't forget to check the status of your sword. If it's below 30%, then go to the blacksmith and have him fix it. When it's fixed, continue taking jobs. Our character did jobs up to day 388, and no new jobs that seem to have any relation to events were available. Anyway we also racked up tons of cash! We should be good for some time. Return to your inn and remove your mask (go back to the Customize, Clothes menu to do this). We're going somewhere else. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the first one (Travel). On the map, choose the area directly above us (it's Kyoto) and enter it. *********************** Part 11 *********************** ----------------------- Kyoto Dojo Day 390-391: ----------------------- When you enter Kyoto, you will get another cutscene. Two swordsmen will be talking about something. Save your game after this. Let's visit the Kyoto Dojo. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the sixth one (Kyoto Dojo). Once you enter, you will talk to the master. You will have two choices. Triangle - duel to the death. Square - don't duel to the death right now. Choose Triangle and kill the master. Once you're done, you won't be able to go to his dojo anymore. It's time to rest for the day. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the second option (Inn). While walking to the inn, you will be confronted by another swordsman. You'll recognize him as the best student of the Kyoto Dojo! Kill him, he shouldn't be a match for you. After that, you'll finally arrive at your inn. Choose to skip to the next day and save your game. We're leaving again. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the first one (Travel). On the map, we're going to Osaka, which is the area to the left of our current location. Enter it. ----------------------- Osaka Dojo Day 393-399: ----------------------- Save your game when you arrive. Let's beat up the Osaka Dojo! Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the sixth one (Osaka Dojo). Enter it and beat them all. After that in the evening, go to the Sword Shop. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the last one (Sword Shop). Buy all of the swords that they have. Go to the inn afterwards and skip to the next day until day 399. ------------------------- Osaka Tournament Day 400: ------------------------- Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the second one (Tournament). Beat up everybody and you'll see there are three prizes. Choose the prize with long text as always. Go back to the inn and save. We'll beat the tournament two more times. ------------------ Osaka Day 401-409: ------------------ After saving your game, let's go to the tea house and beat some people in a friendly tournament, this will also boost our popularity somewhat. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the fourth one (Tea House). Enter it. Beat some people in the friendly tournament and quit when you're tired of it. Next, let's try to win some swords from strangers! After you exit the friendly tournament, choose the fourth option (Rest menu) and choose the first one (Skip 1 Time Period). Go back to the tea house and enter it. Defeat all the strangers and take their swords. When you're done, return to the inn. Save your game. Keep skipping until day 409. ------------------------- Osaka Tournament Day 410: ------------------------- Beat everyone just like before and take another prize with long text. Only one more time left to beat it. Go back to your inn and keep skipping to day 419. ------------------------- Osaka Tournament Day 420: ------------------------- Beat everyone and claim the last prize. Save your game and we're going somewhere else. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the second one (Travel). On the map, you'll see that we can now go to two more places to the left. We want to go to the area on our lower left, it's called Tosa. Enter it. *********************** Part 12 *********************** ------------------ Tosa Dojo Day 434: ------------------ Save your game upon arrival. Let's visit the dojo. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the sixth one (Tosa Dojo). Beat them all until day 439. You should know by now what the characters for "Inn" looks like. ------------------------ Tosa Tournament Day 440: ------------------------ Defeat everyone and claim your prize. There will still be 2 left so we'll have to return to the tournament two more times later on. For now go rest at the inn. ---------------------- Tosa Dojo Day 441-442: ---------------------- Beat them up some more and the master will talk to you again. Return to your inn and skip to the next day. Save your game. Skip until day 449. ------------------------ Tosa Tournament Day 450: ------------------------ Beat everyone and claim another prize. Save your game and skip until day 459. ------------------------ Tosa Tournament Day 460: ------------------------ Defeat everyone again and claim the final prize. Save your game and choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the second one (Travel). On the map, we have two more paths we can take going to the left. On the upper left is Buzen, the lower left is Satsuma. Take the upper left area (Buzen) and enter it. On the way to Buzen, you will meet a swordsman who has a very long sword, he has to wear it on his back! After a short conversation, the two of you will go on along your separate ways. *********************** Part 13 *********************** -------------- Buzen Day 476: -------------- Upon arrival, go ahead and save your game. There is a blacksmith in this area so let's go visit him and let him appraise or fix our swords. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the last one (Blacksmith). Enter it and let him appraise or fix your swords. Save your game afterwards. Let's go to the inn and skip until day 479. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the third one (Inn). ------------------------- Buzen Tournament Day 480: ------------------------- Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the second one (Tournament). Beat everyone and claim your prize. After that, you will get a cutscene where the swordsman you met earlier (the one with the very long sword) will talk to you. After the conversation, you will be outside of the tournament area. It's time to rest. His name is Kojiro. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the third one (Inn). Skip to the next day and save. ---------------------------------- Buzen Kojiro Sasaki Event Day 481: ---------------------------------- Let's return to the tournament area and see if Kojiro is still there. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the second one (Tournament). You'll notice that we can enter the tournament area even if it's not yet scheduled for the next tournament! Let's fight with Kojiro, fortunately, you're going to use wooden swords. The trick to beating him is to make him miss, and then unleash combos on him. He will hurt you bad if you allow him to hit you, so watch out! After you beat him, the two of you will talk. Save your game outside and return inside. You will talk to Kojiro again and then it will be evening. Return to your inn and save and skip to the next day. ---------------------------------- Buzen Kojiro Sasaki Event Day 482: ---------------------------------- Return to the tournament area and enter it. You will have another chat with him and then you will be outside the tournament area. Save the game. Go back inside. You'll talk again. After that it will be evening. Go back to your inn and skip to the next day, be sure to save. ----------------------- Buzen Dojo Day 483-489: ----------------------- Now it's time to beat the Buzen Dojo since Kojiro seems to be saying the same thing over and over again. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the fourth one (Buzen Dojo). Beat everyone up and save your game. Just keep skipping until day 489. ------------------------- Buzen Tournament Day 490: ------------------------- Beat everyone and claim the last prize. Save your game and it's now time to move to another area. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the second one (Travel). On the map you'll see we can go to the next area on our lower left side. That place is called Chikugo. Enter it. *********************** Part 14 *********************** -------------------- Chikugo Day 495-499: -------------------- Save your game upon arrival. Let's visit the Sword Shop. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the seventh choice (Sword Shop). Enter it and buy all the swords they have. Exit when you're done. Let's go to the inn and skip until day 499. Choose the first option (Aciton menu) and choose the third one (Inn). --------------------------- Chikugo Tournament Day 500: --------------------------- Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the second one (Tournament). Defeat all challengers and claim your prize. Return to your inn and skip to the next day. ------------------------- Chikugo Dojo Day 501-509: ------------------------- Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the fifth one (Chikugo Dojo). Beat them up and return to your inn each evening. Do this until day 509. --------------------------- Chikugo Tournament Day 510: --------------------------- Beat everyone again and claim the final prize. Go back to your inn and skip to the next day. We'll go beat some people at the tea house. -------------------------- Chikugo Tea House Day 511: -------------------------- Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the fourth one (Tea House). Enter it and beat some people. Just quit when you get tired of it and then we'll leave for a new area. When you're done beating people in the tea house and you're outside, choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the second one (Travel). You'll see the final area on our lower left is now available, it's called Satsuma. Choose Satsuma and enter it. *********************** Part 15 *********************** --------------------------- Satsuma Tournament Day 520: --------------------------- Just on schedule! Since we arrived on tournament day, let's go beat everyone there! Save your game upon arrival and choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the third one (Tournament). Beat everyone in there and claim the one and only prize. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the third one (Inn). Skip to the next day because we'll start beating up the Satsuma Dojo. ------------------------- Satsuma Dojo Day 521-526: ------------------------- Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the last one (Satsuma Dojo). Beat everyone up to day 526. Go back to the inn and skip to the next day and of course save. Congratulations, we have now beaten all the dojos in Japan! Oh wait, there's still one place we haven't gotten into! It's the Edo Dojo 4! Well, it's time to go back and see if they will let us in this time. Let's also try to find out if there are new events on the way back to Edo. *********************** Part 16 *********************** ---------------------------- Journey Back To Edo Day 527: ---------------------------- From your room in Satsuma, choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the first one (Travel). On the map screen, let's go back to Chikugo, it's the area above Satsuma which is our current location. Enter it. From Chikugo, choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the first one (Travel). On the map, choose the area above us (Buzen). Enter it. While in Buzen, let's give Kojiro a visit in the tournament area. Choose the first one (Action menu) and choose the third (Tournament). Enter it and you'll talk to Kojiro again. You'll be outside once more. Save your game and enter once more. You'll find out that you can't bother Kojiro anymore! I guess it's time to move on. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the second one (Travel). Let's go to the area on our right (Osaka). Enter it. While in Owari, choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the first one (Travel). We'll go check out Kyoto, which is the area above us. Enter it. When you arrive at Kyoto, there will be some swordsmen talking again. Nothing will be new so just choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the first one (Travel). Let's visit the area below us called Iga. Enter it. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the first one (Travel). The area to our right is Owari. Enter it. There will be a cutscene while our character is walking his way to Owari. Our character will encounter a swordsman with an eyepatch! It's time for another duel to the death! You have to be careful because the eyepatch man will try to stab you. He will also be good in trying to do "Block-Counter Strikes" against you. Just make him miss and do combos on him until he dies. --------------------------- Owari Dojo 2 Event Day 569: --------------------------- Save your game upon arrival. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the last one (Owari Dojo 2). You'll enter and there's a master waiting for you. Be careful, he is pretty fast and strong! Make him miss and then pummel him with your combos and he should be done for. He is also weak against attacks that come from above, followed by stab attacks. After beating the master, the two of you will talk. It seems like he's asking you to fight him in a real duel later. Night comes and our character meets up with the master at the temple, ready to do battle with live blades! Use the same strategy we used against the master earlier. Utilize attacks coming from above, as well as stab attacks. Be careful, he loves to do some counter strike moves. After he's done, it'll be late at night. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the second one (Inn). Skip to the next day. It's now time to move on. Save your game first of course. Choose the first one (Action menu) and then choose the first one (Travel). On the map screen, the area directly to our right is Edo! Enter it. As our character walks to Edo at night, he will be ambushed by a bunch of ninjas in black attires! Kill them all and our character will continue on his way. ------------------- Edo Dojo 4 Day 582: ------------------- Save your game upon arrival. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the last one (Edo Dojo 4). You will now be allowed to enter it and you'll be talking to someone. You will then go out again. Go to your inn keep skipping until it is day 589. Don't forget to save! ----------------------- Edo Tournament Day 590: ----------------------- Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the second one (Tournament). Beat the five challengers and choose Square to get 100 Ryo and to continue on your journey. Save your game and choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the second one (Travel). Let's go visit Ueno, which is directly above us. *********************** Part 17 *********************** ---------------------------- Exploring Japan Day 593-719: ---------------------------- Upon arriving at Ueno, go save your game. Nothing seems to be different so we'll go explore some more. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the first one (Travel). Let's visit Aizu, the area above us. Nothing's new at Aizu, so let's go back to Ueno. Hopefully, you already know which one is Ueno. From Ueno, let's make our way back to Owari, which is to our left. From Owari, let's go to Iga, which is to our lower left. From Iga, let's go to Kyoto, which is directly above us. From Kyoto, let's go to Owari, which is to our lower left. From Owari, let's go to Tosa, which is to our lower left. From Tosa, let's go to Satsuma, which is to our left. From Satsuma, let's go to Chikugo, which is above us. From Chikugo, let's go to Buzen, which is above us. From Buzen, make your way back to Iga. From Iga, make go to Edo, which is to our right. While our character is walking back to Edo, he will encounter the swordsman who saved him before. He had a wooden sword before, but now he's carrying a real one! He and our character will have a staredown on the road, but they will then move on their separate ways. By the way, that guy's name whom we met again is Musashi. Please remember that the important thing is we get this cutscene where we meet with Musashi on the road, stare down with him, and then leave. This seems to trigger something. ---------------------------- Edo Tea House Event Day 719: ---------------------------- While in Edo, choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the fifth one (Tea House). Beat one person in the friendly tournament and then quit. Someone will talk to you all of a sudden! A text will be highlighted in lightblue color, that means we have to go there! When we're back out of the tea house, save the game. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the eighth choice (Edo Tea House Event, it's the one the guy told us about). Inside, we will talk to a bald guy. After the talk, it will be evening. Save your game. Go inside the place again and you'll find out you can use the place to "combine" moves, just like other temples. We won't touch on that subject matter for now, so exit again by choosing the fourth option while inside the temple. Outside, it will be dark late at night. Save your game. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the last one. It should be very a very long text. You will then be walking on the road at night when suddenly, those black costumed ninjas will ambush you! Kill them all and you'll arrive at your destination. Nobody will be there for now so you will just look around. It will be morning again. Save your game. ------------------ Edo Event Day 720: ------------------ Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the last one (with the longest text). You will go back to the place we went to last night, but this time there will be someone there! The person looks familiar. He looks like the master from one of the events we had where we had to kill the other student. Anyway the two of them will talk. You will be out in Edo again. Save your game. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the last one (we're just going back). You will then talk to the man we just met. The two of you will then step outside and prepare to duel to the death! Be very careful, he is really good! He is a very defensive type, so don't even think about attacking first. He will easily use "Block- Counter Strikes" if you're not careful. Throws or "Distracting Weapon Strikes" don't seem to work on him as well. Your only real chance is to make him miss and then pound him with combos. After you kill him, you will have his sword. After that, it's time to travel again. Let's visit the blacksmith in Aizu to make him appraise and fix our swords. ---------------------------- Exploring Japan Day 720-928: ---------------------------- From Edo, let's go to Aizu, which is on our upper right. While in Aizu, choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the last one (Blacksmith). Let the blacksmith appraise and fix your swords. Exit after that. Go check if any of the swords you have collected so far is worth equipping. Outside the blacksmith's place, choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the second one (Travel). Go to Ueno, which is on our left. From Ueno, go to Edo, which is below us. From Edo, let's go to Owari, which is on our left. From Owari, let's go to Iga, which is on our lower left. From Iga, let's go to Kyoto, which is above us. From Kyoto, let's go to Osaka, which is on our lower left. From Osaka, let's go to Tosa, which is on our lower left. From Tosa, let's go to Satsuma, which is on our lower left. From Satsuma, let's go to Chikugo, which is above us. From Chikugo, let's go to Buzen, which is above us. It will take some time but keep travelling until you get back to Edo. ------------------ Edo Event Day 928: ------------------ Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the seventh one (Bald Guy's Place). You will talk with the bald guy again. After talking, save your game. Go to the inn and skip to the next day. It's time to leave again and explore Japan. Make sure you have saved. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the first one (Travel). ----------------------------------- Exploring Japan Day 929 and Beyond: ----------------------------------- Where you travel next is up to you! It seems that in order to trigger some more events, we need to get high Popularity Points in every area. You'll know you have high popularity in an area when you check your map. Areas that have full yellow bars mean you're very popular there. The blue bars represent your "good" popularity if you've been doing good things like winning tournaments and beating dojos. The "bad" popularity is represented by the red bar, this is filled up by taking jobs that involve killing and assassination without using masks. Hopefully, this guide was able to help you get used to how the game works. I'm sure there are still a lot of events we haven't discovered yet. *********************** Part 18 *********************** ----------------- Edo Dojo 2 Event: ----------------- * It is important that for this event, you haven't entered any other dojos in Edo yet. We can only trigger one Edo Dojo event for each game. It is important that you make one save game where you are still going to choose which Edo Dojo event you want to activate. From the main Edo screen, choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the nineth option (Edo Dojo 2). Keep beating everyone in Edo Dojo 2 everyday until the event starts. When you beat the best student, you will be brought outside the dojo and you will talk with the students about something. After a few days of beating them up some more, the best student will introduce you to the dojo's master. It seems that you will be representing the dojo in the upcoming tournament! Keep beating them up until you get the countdown saying you only have a few days left before the tournament starts. When that time comes, just keep skipping days until it's time for the tournament. When it's the day of the tournament, go back to Edo Dojo 2 to start the event. Win the tournament and you will be talking on the bridge with the best student. The others will also join in. Later that night, you will still be talking, but this time on the road. You will then be star gazing with everyone else. The next day, return to Edo Dojo 2 and you will see that the best student is waiting for you. The two of you will talk and you will have two options. Press Square. Return inside the dojo and then you will fight a student and some guy in black costume. Beat them and then return to your inn and skip to the next day. Return to Edo Dojo 2 and you'll get another cutscene with the guy in black. You will then be outside, and the best student will talk to you. Later on, some guys in purple will be talking. You and the black dressed guy will enter and you will fight the old man in purple. He shouldn't be hard so just beat him in the same old style. The day should end so just skip to the next day. Return to the dojo and then the master will challenge you. Beat him, he shouldn't really be too hard. Come back inside and you'll fight with the guy in black, so just beat him up too. Do this for a few days and you will get a cutscene where the master will ask for your input or name. Just press O to accept your name and then press Triangle to tell him you're done. After that, return to Edo Dojo 2 for two more days. After that, try to go to the Tea House in the morning. ------------------------------- Formation of Shinsengumi Event: ------------------------------- * I got this right after the Edo Dojo 2 Event, it just happened while I was on my way to the tea house to check something. You will get a cutscene where a man and a woman are being challenged by two guys. There will be a short fight between them, but the man and the woman will win. Another stranger will appear and you will all talk for a bit. Go back to your inn and skip to the next day. Of course, don't forget to save. On the next day, choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the tenth one (it has three characters, it's a new addition). Enter it. You will then have to battle a lot of them in sparring matches! Be ready! Fortunately, they won't be too hard. The normal guys are easy. Just be a little cautious with the one who wear different clothes, they're a bit fast. You still shouldn't have any problems beating them anyway. After that, go back to your inn and skip to the next day. Return to the new place (it's the tenth choice from your room's Action menu). Beat everyone there again. Go back inside when you're done and you'll be talking with the girl (or is she really a guy, I don't know). A guy in blue will come in and challenge you to a fight. Beat him and the day will end with all of you talking. Skip to the next day. Return to the place again. Beat the guy and then the girl. After the day is done, return to your inn. You will meet another guy from the dojo, and then some more guys. You will then be surrounded by attackers, and you and the other guy you met will have to help each other out. Kill all the attackers and the two of you will then move on your own ways. On the next day, return to the place you've been visiting recently. The girl will tell you something and you and the guy from yesterday will have a chat. After that, return inside and beat everyone up. Go to your inn after that and skip to the next day. Enter the dojo and beat everyone up. The master will then recognize you for your efforts. Keep returning to the place everyday and you will get a cutscene where the girl and a guy will talk to you inside. After that, the master and the guy you helped fight the bad guys will talk to you. You will have two options. Press Triangle. You will seem to accept something. Later on, the girl and another guy will be talking to you. Some guy in green will show up and say stuff, but he'll leave quickly. Later that night on the streets of Edo, you will be out with the people from the new place you've been visiting the past few days. You will then go inside a room with another person and all of you will be talking again. The next day, you will be in your room and the girl will visit you. The master will also show up and all of you will have a meeting somewhere. It seems that you have now formed the Shinsengumi! In your room, you will be wearing a new uniform. Choose the first option (Action menu) and you will only have two choices. Choose the first one (Duty). You will then be talking to someone. You will have two choices again. a. Continue with Kyoto Shinsengumi Event b. Shinsengumi Assassination Event. Press Triangle and your story will eventually branch out to the Kyoto Shinsengumi Event. (If you press Square to brance to the Shinsengumi Assassination Event. You may want to go to the "Shinsengumi Assassination Event" section if you chose to press Square now.) The screen will be black for awhile and then you will be talking with some more people. On the next day, choose Duty again. You will then talk to the girl. The day will end after that. Choose Duty again on the next day. You will talk to the other guy again but he will leave. A guy in black uniform will appear and talk to you. The day will end after that. Choose Duty again the next day. Your character will hear something and decide to eavesdrop on the other guy in uniform who's talking to a guy in green. Later on, the guy in uniform will talk to you in your room. The next day, choose Duty again. It seems that you will be reporting some stuff to the leader. Choose Duty on the next day. You will be talking to the girl once more. You will also see the other guy in uniform looking sad. It seems that later on, you will become some sort of leader as well. From this point on, you will be following the storyline from "Kyoto Shinsengumi Event Day 318". Please go check that section and continue from there. -------------------------------- Shinsengumi Assassination Event: -------------------------------- * You get to this storyline by pressing the Square button the first time you talk to the other Shinsengumi member when you two are guarding the house or something. You get to that event just after the Shinsengumi has been formed and you change into the Shinsengumi uniform. Follow the story and keep choosing Duty after you have chosen Square on the "Formation of Shinsengumi" event. You will eventually reach a point where your character will talk to the others and you will try to assassinate the guy in green. On that rainy night, he escapes your attack by rolling away. You now have to fight him. He isn't hard, so just make him miss and deal a lot of combos on him. He just has high health. After killing him, your friends will come and you will be brought back to your room. Save your game. From this point on, the game will continue on the "Kyoto Shinsengumi Event" just like before. ------------------- Kyoto Dojo 2 Event: ------------------- I was able to get this event when I started a new game. Create a new character and make him start from Kyoto. Win the first tournament and then choose the second prize (it's the pass to Iga). Beat the first dojo until you defeat its master twice. After that, beat the Kyoto Dojo 2 (it should be the last choice in the Action menu from your room). You will notice that you'll be fighting the same best student after a few days. Leave Kyoto and go to Iga. When you arrive in Iga, it's time to go back to Kyoto right away! When you arrive, go back to Kyoto Dojo 2 (it's the last choice from the Action menu) and you'll get a cutscene eventually after you beat it repeatedly. You will be introduced to a few people inside Kyoto Dojo 2. The best student will talk to you and you will have to fight a normal student followed by the best student. Beat them up and the day is over. Save your game inside your inn. Return to Kyoto Dojo 2 on the next day. You'll find that the guy in blue would have beaten up all the students! You will talk to the best student once more. After that, go back inside the dojo and beat up everyone. Go back to your inn and save. Go back to Kyoto Dojo 2 on the next day. Beat everyone up and you will talk to the master. Go back inside and beat everyone again. On the next day, return to Kyoto Dojo 2. Beat the master and return to the dojo. Beat the best student. Go back to your inn and save. Return to Kyoto Dojo 2 on the next day and you'll get another cutscene. The master and the best student will talk to you about something very important. Go back inside the dojo after that. Beat the best student. Save in your inn afterwards. On the next day, you'll notice that the master is gone from Kyoto Dojo 2 and only the best student is left! At this point, you might want to join the Kyoto Tournament and win all the other prizes (the passes) so that you can travel to other places. When you're done, leave Kyoto. Let's go to Iga. When you arrive at Iga, you will see a cutscene where two swordsmen are chatting in a restaurant. After that, return to Kyoto. Save your game and go to Kyoto Dojo 2. You will get a cutscene and the best student will talk to you. A guy in blue will burst into the dojo and yell something serious. You will be brought outside the dojo. You will be back on the streets of Kyoto. If you check your Action menu, you'll find out that the Kyoto Dojo 2 has disappeared! Maybe they closed it temporarily due to whatever serious matter was announced. Save your game. Try to go to the Tea House, choose the first option (Action menu) and then the fifth one (Tea House). One of the swordsmen inside will say something and you'll be brought back outside. Go back to your inn and save. ------------------- Kyoto Shrine Event: ------------------- * This is a continuation of the Kyoto Dojo 2 Event. On the next day, return to the Tea House. The swordsmen will be gone and you will be allowed to enter the Friendly Tea Tournament. Enter it. Win one battle and then choose Square to exit. Some guy will tell you about something. Be sure to save your game afterwards. Once outside, choose the first option (Action menu) and you'll notice that there's a new choice at the bottom of the list. Choose that last option, which turns out to be a shrine. Enter it. It seems that the shrine is full of bald monks with sticks! You will then have to defeat a student monk. The strategy against these monks is to try and move in a circle. They usually just use stab attacks. If you keep moving in a circular way, they will miss, and that will give you the opportunity to attack. Do this a few times and the student will be defeated. Use stab attacks against them if you have those because other attacks won't reach them in time. Be careful, your "Block-Counter Strike" moves won't work against them. You can't even use the "Distracting Weapon Strike". After this, go back to your inn and save. Return to the shrine on the next day (it's the last option in the Action menu). Beat them all up and repeat the process for a few days. You will eventually meet the monk master. After beating up the student monks, the monk master will talk to you. Go back into the shrine after this and beat the best student. Go back to your inn and save when you're done. Return to the shrine on the next day. Beat them up and then go back inside the shrine. Beat them up some more. Do this everyday and you will eventually have a cutscene where the monk master will talk to you in a room. Be sure to save your game and skip to the next day. Return to the shrine. Beat up everyone and you will fight the master. You will know it's him because he's the monk who has the longest stick you've ever encountered! Just do the same tactic as before, try to circle him and make him miss, and then stab him. Go back to your inn and save. Return to the shrine the next day. Beat up everybody and you will have to fight the master again! Since we have been beating the monks for some time now, you should also have noticed that they are not capable of doing "Block-Counter Strike" and "Distracting Weapon Strikes" as well. Although circling them and stabbing them works, there's an easier way! Hold down the X button to block and keep moving towards the monk. They will attack but you will block it. When you're close enough to them, make them hit you. When their stick gets blocked, it will bounce away a little. Use this opportunity to use a combo on them, you can now use whatever attack you want, not just stab attacks! Once the master has been beaten, the two of you will be talking about something serious. It seems that he has challenged you to a fight to the death! The fight will begin and you will be using live blades this time. His stick will become a spear, which is deadly! Fortunately, we have figured out how to easily kill monks. Just keep holding the X button to block, and then when you're close enough, let him attack. When his attack gets deflected, use combos on him to kill him. By the way, there are times when he will run away from you. Just let him do that, don't run after him. Just keep walking towards him while holding the block button and he'll once again fall to your trap. After he's dead, you will be back on the streets of Kyoto. Save your game. The shrine won't be available in the Action menu anymore, and Kyoto Dojo 2 still won't be there. I guess it's time to leave. Let's go to Iga. On the way to Iga, a bunch of monks will try to avenge their master! Kill them all. After you kill all the monks, you will arrive at Iga. Go back to Kyoto immediately. You will be ambushed by a bunch of bandits, but Musashi, the guy with the wooden sword will save you! After that, go back to Iga and save your game. -------------- Iga Job Event: -------------- When you're at Iga, you might want to win the Iga Tournament so that you will be able to pass to the next area. It's a good idea to do this now so that we won't be bothered anymore later. When you're done with the tournament, save your game and we'll begin the Iga Job Event. From your room, choose the first option (Action menu) and then the third one (Jobs). What we're trying to find is a job wherein we will have to kill a bunch of mountain bandits. Just keep taking jobs until you get that one. The job we're looking for is listed as three characters on the job listing. It also has a full set of red check marks. Choose that one when you see it. The guy who gives jobs will talk to you a bit longer than usual. Your character will be walking along the mountain road when suddenly, a bunch of bandits will ambush you. Kill them all. As you try to sheath your sword, an attack will come from behind, but you will dodge it. A man with a chain attached to some kind of sickle will be the enemy. The guy with the chain and sickle is no problem. Our strategy against him is just the same that we used against the monks. Hold the X button to block all the time. Get close to him, and let him hit us while we're blocking. When the chain or sickle gets deflected, we pound him with our combos until he dies. After killing the chain and sickle guy, a girl will appear. She will talk to our character. Choose Square so that we won't have to kill her. She will then tell us of a location we can go to later, highlighted in skyblue color as always. Save the game afterwards. After saving, choose the first option (Action menu) and you'll notice that another choice has been added at the very bottom. Choose that one. We will arrive at the girl's place. She will introduce us to who seems to be her master, also a chain and sickle user. After a little chat, we will be brought back to the streets of Iga. Save your game. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the last one option (Girl's Place). The girl will bring you inside and you will talk to the master again. Save your game after that. If you try to go back again, the girl will tell you something and you will go away. Maybe she said you've been bugging them too much and just return on the next day. Go to your inn and skip to the next day. Go back to the Girl's Place. The girl will send you away. Go back to the Girl's Place again after that, and she will finally let you back in. You will then talk to the master. Go to your inn after that and skip to the next day. Don't forget to save your game. Go back to the Girl's Place. You will see the master sitting down. He will notice you and the two of you will talk. A duel to the death is about to begin! The strategy against the master with the chain is sickle is the same with the monks. Just keep holding the block button. We just have to be more careful because he can actually use the sickle to wrap our sword and pull us closer! Anyway, just make him miss or block his attack and then let him taste our full arsenal of combos. He should die in no time, he isn't that hard. After killing him, the girl will be shocked after she sees the dead body of her master. We will be out on the streets of Iga again. Save your game. It's time to go back to Kyoto. ----------------------------- Return to Kyoto Dojo 2 Event: ----------------------------- Save your game upon arrival to Kyoto. Choose the first option (Action menu) and then you'll notice that Kyoto Dojo 2 is back! It's the last option so choose it. The best student will tell you something. It's now time to go to Owari! ---------------------- Chasing Musashi Event: ---------------------- Save your game upon arriving to Owari. Join the Owari Tournament and take the prize that will let you go to Edo, it's the second one if it's the first time you have beaten the Owari Tournament. Beat the tournament a second time to get the prize that will give you access to Ueno. Go to Edo. Save your game. Choose the first option (Action menu) and take the fifth one (Tea House). Win a game and choose Square to quit. A guy will tell you about a place you can go to. We won't go there yet since we have to do something else. We just wanted to unlock that place that is represented by three characters. Save your game and go back to Owari. From Owari, we will go to Ueno, BUT we have to make sure that when we arrive to Ueno, the day is divisible by 10!!! This is VERY IMPORTANT. Ex. Current day in Owari is 112. Total Days to travel from Owari to Ueno is 14 Days. We want it to be divisible by 10. Solution: From Day 112 in the example, let us skip to day 116. If we travel from Owari starting at day 116 going to Ueno, then the result would be: Day 116 + 14 Days = Day 130. Anyway, when you are sure that you will arrive at Ueno on a day that is divisible by 10, then start your travel to Ueno. On the way to Ueno, you will meet the guy wearing blue clothes who came from Kyoto Dojo 2! You will talk for a little while and then go on your separate ways. Upon arrival at Ueno, save your game. You will remember that any day divisible by 10 is Tournament Day! Hurry up and beat the Ueno Tournament. Take the second prize which should let you go to Edo. Hurry up and go to Edo! Once you're in Edo, choose the first option (Action menu) and then choose the eighth choice (Shrine), which we unlocked on an earlier visit via the Tea House tournament. You will talk to a bald monk when you enter it. When you're back out, go back inside the shrine and you'll find the guy in blue from Kyoto Dojo 2 standing inside the shrine! You will have two options. Press Triangle to fight him to the death. The strategy to beat the guy in blue clothes from Kyoto Dojo 2 is by using your Aizu "Block-Counter Strike" moves. His attacks mainly come from above and from the sides. He shouldn't pose a threat to you. Save your game after you kill him. It's time to return to Kyoto! Make your way back to Kyoto now. You will get another cutscene where swords men are talking about something again. After this event, go travel around the places that you've been to. It's pretty random it seems, but you will eventually meet Musashi on the road once again. Keep travelling around. Anyway return to Edo and go back to the shrine (it's the eighth option). You will talk to the monk one more time. Now it's time to make your way to Osaka. When you arrive at Osaka, go save your game and beat the Osaka Tournament. Choose the first prize which will let you go to Buzen. ---------------------------- Meeting Kojiro Sasaki Event: ---------------------------- Travel to Buzen. You will meet Kojiro Sasaki on the road. Save the game afterwards and join the Buzen Tournament. Pick a prize. You will then talk to Kojiro in a room. Save your game and skip to the next day. Go back to the tournament area and beat Kojiro. Go back inside after that. After your little talk, go back to your inn and skip to the next day. Save your game and return to the tournament area. You will talk to Kojiro again. After that, go back inside. You will talk to him again in the same way. Go back to Osaka. When you're in Osaka, go back to Buzen. Go back to the tournament area and Kojiro will say something different. Try to go back inside but it won't let you talk to Kojiro anymore! At this point on, it will seem to be random where Kojiro will next show up. The only thing we can do is to go to every area and try to enter the tournament area during non-tournament days. Kojiro will be in the tournament area during a non-tournament day. As for our character who went around, we found Kojiro back in Buzen! After talking to Kojiro in the tournament area, go back to your inn and skip to the next day. Skip time to the evening (but not late at night!). Remember to save your game because we will have multiple paths here to choose. Go back to the tournament area and you will find Kojiro again. He will bring you to the beach. You have two choices. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Kojiro Triangle Choice ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you choose to press Triangle, the day will end. Go back to your inn and skip to the next day. Choose the first option (Action menu) and you'll notice there's a new addition on the bottom of the list. Choose the last choice (Beach). You will be brought to the beach where Kojiro and a bunch of swordsmen are waiting for Musashi to arrive. A boat carrying Musashi will show up and as soon as Musashi gets off the boat, he rushes towards Kojiro and the two of them deal each other a single lethal blow. Unfortunately for Kojiro, Musashi is a lot better. Kojiro gets killed with Musashi's oar! The day will end after that. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you decide to press Square when Kojiro first asks you, you will see another two choices. Choose Triangle. This seems to give the same result as the "Kojiro Triangle Choice". Another option we have is by pressing Square first, and then Square again on Kojiro's second question. This will let us fight Kojiro. The strategy against Kojiro is simple. He's not really fast. His attacks usually come from above or the side, so we can just make him miss and counter him with combos. He'll die fast. After Kojiro is dead, you will get his very long sword! You now have two choices that you will have to make manually. Since Kojiro is dead, we have the option of fighting Musashi on the beach the next day, or we can go to Edo and wait for Musashi to invite us to a duel. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fight Musashi with Oar on the Next Day -------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you want to fight Musashi in the morning after you have killed Kojiro, go back to your inn and skip to the next day. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the last choice (Beach). You will be brought to the beach with an audience. Musashi will come via boat and he will be wondering where Kojiro is. The two of you talk and then you fight Musashi. Musashi, who is using an oar, is quite surprisingly easy to beat, even more if you're using Kojiro's long sword! Musashi's attacks come from above and the sides, use the Aizu "Block-Counter Strike" move on him whenever possible. Pound him with combos if he misses. He should die soon. You'll get one or two of Musashi's moves after you kill him. You will then talk to three guys and the game will proceed normally. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you want to fight Musashi who will use two swords, then follow the next section instead. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fight Musashi with Two Swords in Edo --------------------------------------------------------------------------- After killing Kojiro, it will be late at night. Make your way to Edo. On the way, you'll hear two swordsmen talking about something. Once in Edo, we have to choose a dojo to beat. Choose Edo Dojo 1. If you remember, this will trigger an event where we have to join a small tournament. Just follow the events until you reach the point where you have to kill some guy in purple. After killing the guy in purple, keep returning to Edo Dojo 1 until the master talks to you and asks you to input your name. Just accept and your business with Edo Dojo 1 is over. Just go back to your inn and skip to the Edo Tournament day, which is any number divisible by 10. Beat the Edo Tournament and when presented the two choices, press Square so that you will only get 100 Ryo and continue on your journey. Go back to your inn and skip to the next day. A man will visit you in the morning, he will tell you that Musashi has challenged you to a duel! The text highlighted with lightblue color is the one you have to go to. Don't forget to save. Choose the first option (Action menu) and choose the eleventh one (Beach). It's the second to the last option. Your battle with Musashi shall now begin! This version of Musashi who is using two swords is surprisingly not that tough! You just have to be careful because he also has an unblockable "Block-Counter Strike" move where he stabs you. His attacks come from below going up, but it's nothing really to worry about. Another version of his attacks will come from above. Just like before, make him miss and then pound him with combos, he shouldn't last too long. You might want to use Kojiro's sword in this battle. *********************** Part 19 *********************** ------- Tricks: ------- A. Endless Combo Later on in the game you will gain combos that range from 3 to 5 hits. You can actually perform a combo and then cancel by pressing the X button. For example, let's take the Aizu Dojo's special combo. This is the one that is in the move list category that only has one character. That's the place where you find the special combos. Anyway, the Aizu Dojo's special combo works like this. It starts with a middle slash, followed by a rising diagonal cut, followed by a diving diagonal cut, and finally ended by a middle slash. To do an endless combo with it, hit the O button twice, so it will perform the middle slash and the rising diagonal cut. Quickly press the X button and you'll notice that as the enemy is getting hit with the rising diagonal cut, your character will move back to his stance. Press O again and you'll notice that you are doing the middle slash again that is the beginning of the full combo. Once you get used to how this is done, you can actually make an opponent miss, hit them once, and then string in an endless combo. Most fights can be ended in less than 10 seconds this way. B. Unlockables There are some unlockable stuff in the game. Beat the VS 100, VS 1000, and 1-Hit Kill Modes to unlock some characters in VS Mode. Finishing events in the game can also unlock more characters. C. Quickly Finish Jobs In jobs where there are screen transitions, you can just avoid enemies and run to where the next screen loads and you'll move on to the next area or the boss right away! This is useful in missions where you guard the gate from those guys with hammers. Just keep running forward until you face the boss. This also works on mountain missions and mansion missions where you have to get to reach a certain area to load the next screen. ------------------------------------------ RAW Codes for GameShark and Action Replay: ------------------------------------------ I only have RAW codes, so I think this is compatible with both the GameShark and the Action Replay cheat devices. The only one which isn't in RAW format is the master code. I think the master code is for Action Replay. I'm not sure but I think raw codes MIGHT work without the master code. Being unable to read Japanese while wanting to play a game that has lots of Japanese text might be a bit daunting at first, but experimenting always leads to understanding. Thanks also to those who wrote what little information I was able to gather about the game on the net. The two other mini-guides that I found useful were the ones at GameFaqs by Gohda_Motohide (initial menu translation) and Jack Power (map screen). Those two got me started nicely into understanding the game more. Without those two guides, it would've taken me a few more hours figuring out the menus, and I wouldn't know what to call the main areas in the game. I hope you enjoyed this guide as much as I enjoyed writing it. If you have any additional information about how to make events happen, or if you have additional RAW codes, please drop me an email. Explore and have fun with the game! --------------- Special Thanks: --------------- Thanks to Gohda_Motohide for being the first one to give a translation on most of the menu items, Jack Power for providing a nice translated map, and SamuraiKenji for re-posting hints on how to find Musashi. *********************** Part 20 *********************** ---------------------- Copyright Information: ---------------------- I wrote this guide so that people can use it for FREE.
