WELCOME =============================================================================== Hello everyone! After a good fun time making the GT4 Car List I have decided to make a Tyres FAQ. This is my second FAQ and hopefully not my last. My contributor page is slowly growing so please check there for other things that I have done at GameFAQs. I just thought that tyres is a subject in GT4 that many people can get confused over or know very little about. I'm just trying to help. After just watcing the Formula One Turkish Grand Prix when Juan Pablo Montoya went off the track at that quadruple apex turn 8 on the final lap and letting third place man Fernando Alonso through to finish second happened because of a severe lack of grip. And Williams BMW having I think five or six tyre failures throughout the race weekend. Tyres are probably one of the most important parts of a car because it is the only part of the car that actually makes contavt with with the ground. More on this later. So I decided to create a Tyres FAQ for Gran Turismo 4 even though there aren't any tyre failures in this game but there is is still tyre wear. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 04. TYRES =============================================================================== Tyres are one of the most important parts of a car because the tyres are the only things that should be touching the ground. Having the correct tyres will have a huge effect on the handling, braking and acceleration of the car. The softer the tyre the quicker it will wear out but it will have more grip while a harder tyre will take a much longer time to wear out and less grip. Finding the balance is crutial at the beginning of any race. Also costs will come into account. You will have to manage your budget carefully as the price range of the different sets of tyres is quite vast. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 04.01. TYRE INFORMATION TABLES =============================================================================== This section has all of the vital data that you should know about the tyres. You should be able to view these tables easily if you are using a monowidth font like I said up near the beginning of this FAQ. This first table is just a brief overview of every tyre type. You will find more in-depth information later on. Type: Grade: Name: Price (Cr.): Service life (in laps): Standard N1 Economy - 17-20 N2 Comfort - 12-15 N3 Road - 7-10 Sports S1 Hard 4,600 13-15 S2 Medium 5,500 8-10 S3 Soft 6,100 3-5 Racing R1 Super Hard 8,200 25-30 R2 Hard 10,300 17-20 R3 Medium 22,300 10-13 R4 Soft 34,800 5-8 R5 Super Soft 47,300 2-4 When you stick a new set of tyres on a car, the tyres will not be at the optimum operating temperature, threrefore less grip. To increase the amount of grip you must put heat into them and the only way to do this in GT4 is by accelerating, turning and braking. But the continious forces that are applied to the tyres will slowly wear it down depending on the tyre. It is possible to extend the life of the tyre but going easy on the throttle, brakes and the steering. You have to find the balance between speed and caution then you will be unbeatable (unless someone is in a better car than you and doesn't crash out). When the tyre indicator is blue that means the tyres are not yet upto temperature. Green means maximum grip. When it reaches yellow that means the tyre is starting to loose its grip and efficency and red means the tyre is dead. No grip. Colour: Pencentage grip: Blue 70% Green 100% Yellow 80% Orange 50% Red 10% When the tyre indicator is blue that means the tyres are not yet upto temperature. Green means maximum grip. When it reaches yellow that means the tyre is starting to loose its grip and efficency and red means the tyre is dead. No grip. This table has been complied by using my own racing expierence. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 04.02. IN-DEPTH TYRE INFORMATION =============================================================================== This section has all the info you need to know about every tyre. Please note that the Maximum grip part may not be correct. It is just an estimated figure to give an impression on how much grip it can produce. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 04.02.01. STANDARD =============================================================================== If you are using these tyres press start and then go to exit and change them to sports or racing. They have no grip, they are crap and you will crash and crash and crash and crash and crash and crash and crash and crash and crash and crash. Just like what happened to me. The only good thing about them is that they are good tyres if you want to use them for drifting. Use something like the BMW M5. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 04.02.01.01. ECONOMY =============================================================================== Type: Standard Grade: N1 Name: Economy Price (Cr.): - Service life (in laps): 17-20 Maximum grip: 30% Notes: If you use these tyres, your life will be at risk! =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 04.02.01.02. COMFORT =============================================================================== Type: Standard Grade: N2 Name: Comfort Price (Cr.): - Service life (in laps): 12-15 Maximum grip: 35% Notes: By using these tyres, you are agreeing that you are an idiot! =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 04.02.01.03. ROAD =============================================================================== Type: Standard Grade: N3 Name: Road Price (Cr.): - Service life (in laps): 7-10 Maximum grip: 40% Notes: Even though it's free, it's not worth it. Little grip and poor endurance, it cant get much worse. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 04.02.02. SPORTS =============================================================================== If you have a little bit of money, you might want to buy some of these tyres. They are not that great but provide a substancial amount of grip for low powered cars. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 04.02.02.01. HARD =============================================================================== Type: Sports Grade: S1 Name: Hard Price (Cr.): 4,600 Service life (in laps): 13-15 Maximum grip: 55% Notes: If you are using a car with less than 300 BHP, these tyres should do the job. If your car has more han 300 BHP, you will notice that there will be very little grip and you'll need a better set of tyres. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 04.02.02.02. MEDIUM =============================================================================== Type: Sports Grade: S2 Name: Medium Price (Cr.): 5,500 Service life (in laps): 8-10 Maximum grip: 65% Notes: Only stick these tyres to an average powered car for optimum grip. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 04.02.02.03. SOFT =============================================================================== Type: Sports Grade: S3 Name: Soft Price (Cr.): 6,100 Service life (in laps): 3-5 Maximum grip: 75% Notes: Only stick these tyres on an average powered car for a little bit more grip that doesn't last long. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 04.02.03. RACING =============================================================================== These are the ultamate tyres. Expensive but awesome grip and endurance. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 04.02.03.01. SUPER HARD =============================================================================== Type: Racing Grade: R1 Name: Super Had Price (Cr.): 8,200 Service life (in laps): 25-30 Maximum grip: 65% Notes: The most useful tyre in GT4 is also the most cheap one. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 04.02.03.02. HARD =============================================================================== Type: Racing Grade: R2 Name: Hard Price (Cr.): 10,300 Service life (in laps): 17-20 Maximum grip: 75% Notes: If you've got a powerful FR car, you'll want to stick these on the front so the tyres wear out equally. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 04.02.03.03. MEDIUM =============================================================================== Type: Racing Grade: R3 Name: Medium Price (Cr.): 22,300 Service life (in laps): 10-13 Maximum grip: 85% Notes: Good for those medium distance races. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 04.02.03.04. SOFT =============================================================================== Type: Racing Grade: R4 Name: Soft Price (Cr.): 34,800 Service life (in laps): 5-8 Maximum grip: 95% Notes: Good grip for those very short races. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 04.02.03.05. SUPER SOFT =============================================================================== Type: Racing Grade: R5 Name: Super Soft Price (Cr.): 47,300 Service life (in laps): 2-4 Maximum grip: 100% Notes: Only use these tyres if the race distance is less than soething like 4 miles. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 04.03. TYRE TESTING =============================================================================== Before each race you do you should do some tyre testing. Just to make sure that you can make it through the race without too many tyre problems. Here is an example that shows how good tyres are compared to each other in means of grip. I have just done a test using all the different sets of tyres and it is easy to see how well each tyre performs. I used a Subaru IMPREZA Sedan WRX STi spec C (GD, Type-II) '04 because it is a four wheel drive car. I have arranged these results with the best time at the top and worst time at the bottom. Traction Control had been turned off throughout this test. Position: Grade: Name: Time: 1st R5 Super Soft 12.012 2nd R4 Soft 12.049 (+ 0.037) 3rd R3 Medium 12.160 (+ 0.148) 4th R2 Hard 12.332 (+ 0.320) 5th R1 Super Hard 12.381 (+ 0.369) 6th S3 Soft 12.593 (+ 0.581) 7th S2 Medium 12.675 (+ 0.663) 8th N3 Road 12.687 (+ 0.675) 9th S1 Hard 12.850 (+ 0.838) 10th N2 Luxory 12.879 (+ 0.867) 11th N1 Economy 13.079 (+ 1.067) You can now see how well a tyre performs compared to the others. I was quite shocked to see that the N3 was better than S1. I had a bit of wheel spin until I got up to R3 tyres. Then the grip was just too much. The R3 tyres were nearly two tenths quicker than the R2 set all because of no wheelspin. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 05. FAQ =============================================================================== If you have any questions please E-mail them to me and I might put them in this section, otherwise I will E-mail the answer to you. I have posted some questions here what I think will be asked in the future. Keep your questions coming in. Q: How can I buy new tyres for my Polyphony Digital Formula Gran Turismo '04? A: You cant. I think this is because of the licencing. It would be great if you could get the hard tyres on it but unfortunatley you can't. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 06.
