stilshrine of mirium/ Matius

I have no idea how to beat matius (the boss right before you get the sword) in the stilshrine of mirium. I figured I should use fira magick since they are all ice types but they are immune to it, WTF!

My team is vaan 29, balthier 28, fraan 27, basch 28, penelo 28, and ashe 27.

Please help with strategy and weapons and armor possibilities.

Your levels are good. DO NOT USE MAGIC!!! Stick to Physical attacks. Actually, if you want to use magic, use Thunder magic. Why? In the odd, messed up world of Ivalice, Ice types seem to be weak to Thunder. Look, the Ice Elementals are weak to Thunder, so Mateus(the Ice Esper) is probably weak to Thunder. Luckily, there aren't any special conditions you need to work around(like not being able to use magic). Set up your gambits so you revive any fallen party members, heal anyone below 50% hp, and then set a gambit to attack the lowest level monster. Take out the grunts, then go for Mateus. I beat this battle no problem with only physical attacks, and your levels are higher then mine were. As for weapons, make sure that your weapons have no elemental affinity, unless you want Mateus absorbing your attacks.

First, you should dispel Mateus and reflect on your party. Then, you need to take down her 'helpers'. A good way to beat the helpers and do a lot of damage to Mateus is to chain a large quickening when they are all together that is focused toward Mateus. If the quickening is at least 10+, it should kill all of her helpers. After the helpers are down, Mateus will fall easily.

Ok here is a very good startegy...

Have each charcter at 30(average lv. 30)

Use flame swords if possible

Use ice shields to reduce damage

Dont hit mateus until you beat the minions
When mateus has about a little below 1/4th life use quickenings to finish her off

Hope I helped=]

A hint here:mateus is a very easy fight compared to archiman

Before you go to fight Matius you will have to stock up on Echo Herbs and make sure that you have the magick Thunderaga and either Curaga or Curaja (Ceraja works best). Now the thing to remember is that Ice type creatures are weak against Thunder and that if you deal physical damage to an Elemental you will take damage yourself so what you do about that is to use the Thunderaga magick to deal heavy Thunder damage to the Elementals. Once you use a magick though the Elementals will cast Silence on you, which is where the Echo Herbs come into the battle, use the Echo Herbs to get rid of the Silence that was cast onto you and continue on in the battle. A quick way to get rid of the Elementals is to cast a Quickrning on Matius and try to get it to about 10 or higher and that sould get rid of the Elementals. Once the Elementals are out of the way you can focus on Matius. Again I will remind you that, since she is an Ice type, use Thunderaga on her alot when you get her down to the point of the battlte where her HP is down to about 3/4 of her max HP that would be a good time to use another Quickening if you are able to,if you have the right Augments you will gain MP every time you deal physical damage, magick damage, take damage and defeat an enemy which will allow you to perform the second Quickening. If you are unable to perform the second Quickening then just continue to deal physical damage to her with your entire party, which should take off about an inch of her health every time the party attacks. Now to your party members levels, their levels are not too terriblylow but you could use some more training. Try to get your party members to arround level 30, I had mine at about level 35 and this battle was no problem for me but level 30 should do the trick. Remember to heal your party members with Curaga or Curaja whene they need to be healed and you should be fine. Hope this helps.

I suggest having everyone at least level 35. You can raise in the Paramina Rift for now. Use the most powerful weapon you can find that isn't ice-element. Use Ice Shields to reduce the damage from ice spells. I suggest taking out Mateus before the minions because if you kill Mateus, the Ice Azers die as well. Have Cura and Curaga. Heal with Curaga when your HP goes below 30%, Heal with Cura when HP goes below 50%. I suggest not using magick at all, but that's just me. If one of your party members is a Black Mage type person, you can use magick with them, but use Thunder spells. I suggest getting at least two quickenings for each person because of the magick boost, which helps to cure. Also, carry ALOT of Phoenix Downs. Set everyone's Gambits to where they either use Phoenix Downs or Raise a fallen ally. Hope I helped,
