GENERAL INFORMATION =================== Ultimately the goal of the game is to get 100% complete. Unfortunately this game has a glitch, and it's only possible to achieve 99.08%. Nonetheless, there are still only so many things to achieve and if you pay attention you'll know when you've completed the game. There are 2 disks. This FAQ focuses mostly on the "Simulation Mode" disk. The other disk is "Arcade Mode". ___________ I - A. ARCADE MODE ----------- You'll need to put in the Arcade Mode disk if you want to pop in a 2nd con- troller and race your friend; there is no "2-player" mode on the Simulation Mode disk. Unlike GT3, one cannot win a free car from Arcade mode for use in Simulation mode. In fact, in order to unlock all tracks in Arcade mode one has to obtain the licenses from the simulation disk. When you hit "Start Game" on the Arcade disk, you'll have several options: - Single Player - 2 Player battle - Bonus Items SINGLE PLAYER ------------- Under "Single Player" there are 3 options: - Road Race - Rally Race - Time Trials - ROAD RACE - 1st: Choose EASY, NORMAL or DIFFICULT 2nd: Choose your car; you have several options: ~ S-class : Super Sports Car ~ A-class : Sports Car ~ B-class : High-Performance ~ C-class : City Driver ~ Home Garage: Includes everything available in your home garage from the Simulation Mode disk. 3rd: Choose your track. You may choose between using a Rally car from a short list available, or a car from your home garage IF it has dirt tires purchased. If you choose to use one of the Rally cars courtesy of the Arcade Mode disk, you have the option of selecting "race" settings for the suspension, or "drift" settings. Pikes Peak Downhill - TIME TRIAL - There is no right or wrong way to do the time trial. There are no cars to beat and there is no minimum or maximum time to beat either. You can run as many laps as you want. Starting on the second lap you'll have a ghost car. This ghost will be YOU, from whatever previous lap held your best time. Should you "beat" the ghost car with a better time, then this new "best time" lap will be used for the ghost car on all subsequent laps. 1. Tahiti Road 9. Rome Circuit 17. Grand Valley 2. Grand Valley East 2-PLAYER BATTLE --------------- Simple... (1) Choose your car. Again, you may use one of several cars available from the list as mentioned under Road Race, with the S, A, B and C classes. Or you can pick from your Home Garage. You may also use one from a "guest garage" -- all you have to do is load a memory card with a GT2 save file on it with cars in its home garage into slot 2, and load the data. (2) Choose your track. The list will be the same as the 21 tracks listed under "Road Race". BONUS ITEMS ----------- This is simply a big chart. It shows your progress through the Arcade Mode disk. Your "bonus" is obtaining the closing credits for the game; your choice of "Arcade Mode" or "Simulation Mode" version. Whoop-de-do. _______________ I - B. SIMULATION MODE --------------- This is the "meat" of the game. It includes the Gran Turismo League, the Special Events (the largest section of the game), plus rally and endurance races. Each of these sections will be discussed in greater detail later in this FAQ. From the opening screen you'll have several options. One of them is "save game"; this is the only way to save the game, except at the end of a race. Another option is "load game"; this should only be used when after switching or inserting a new memory card into the Playstation. When the system is booted up, it automatically checks for a memory card file and auto-loads it. Note that you can NOT save multiple files on one memory card. Also note that this game can ONLY be saved to a Playstation ONE memory card. If you are playing this game on a Playstation 2 you will still need to have a Play- station 1 memory card inserted or you cannot save (or load) your data. Another option is "transfer data" -- this is used in the event that you have played the original Gran Turismo and have (another) memory card with a GT1 file on it. By transferring the data from the original game you can get your licenses that you earned in the first game without having to spend time doing it over in Gran Turismo II. You can also watch the "Replay Theater", which just shows races that you can watch. If you leave the opening screen on for long enough these races will come up on their own anyway. At the end of races you will have the option of saving a replay of the race, and you can watch your replays here. *** Really what you want to do is "Start Game" (right?!). Do this and you're brought to what one might call the "home" screen. You can move the mouse- style cursor around with the arrow keys on the D-pad, or with the L1 L2 R1 & R2 buttons to make it move diagonally (get used to this, it's irritating). The options of where you can go include: - the car wash - machine test - a city - licensing - "home", e.g. your garage - "go race" - return to opening screen ("walking" icon @ lower-right end of page) You have numerous areas you can go to from here. There are four "Cities", each one representing a different area of the globe. East City features Japanese cars. South City features American manufacturers. The North and West Cities feature cars of European Origin. Note that there is no "universal" tune shop; if you wish to purchase parts or upgrade any particular car you have to go to the respective manufacturer. This can make the game difficult in the event that you win a certain car but don't know who makes it. Should this happen, try going to the garage and looking up the car's information (the "i" icon) for clues. ____________ I - C. SERIES RACES ------------ There are certain races which appear in this game as a "series". Here, it is not necessary to win each individual race, only the series. At the end of each race points are given to each car depending on their placement. At the end of the series the points are totalled. Unlike other games, you cannot "redo" any race in the series if you don't like your placement; your only option is to re-start the entire series. The series races are: - the GT 300 (Special Events) - the GT 500 (Special Events), and - The World Leage (Gran Turismo League) The placement points are: 1st place: 8 pts 2nd place: 6 pts 3rd place: 4 pts 4th place: 3 pts 5th place: 2 pts 6th place: 1 pt On a 5-race series, it is possible to earn a total of 40 points for winning first place in every race. _________ I - D. FIRST CAR --------- The game does not give you a car to start with. Instead, you get $10,000 (or "credits", technically -- the game does not use "dollars" per se). Using this you can buy your first car. The only cars available at this price are all used cars, and those are only available from certain dealers in "East City" (*CoughCoughJapan*). One would be wise to buy one with the greatest horsepower (c'mon, you know you want to!). The first part of the game will be spent racing the same races over and over in order to gain money with which to buy upgrades for your cars. This means you'll get very used to the Sunday Cup and the Clubman Cup races. Looking under Chart 1 in this FAQ these are the first 6 races, and they get progressively harder. Tahiti Road is the easiest. You'll need to upgrade your car more and more for the other races, and might want to save the latter of these races for later, when you have a car with more horsepower and better handling. A car with 4-wheel drive is a good choice; they take off the line a little faster than others, and (generally) handle much better, especially when you're racing a stock car in a low- to moderate horsepower race. A 4-wheel drive car is invaluable should you find yourself in the dirt, off the paved roadway (which you frequently will). The Mazda RX-7 Infini III does quite well; it starts out with good horsepower and you can add a lot to it. The handling is very good, and can be used well throughout most of the rest of the game. Note that it's a rear-wheel drive. Since it's used, you don't get your choice of colors -- hope you think it looks good in red. The Toyota Celica GT-4 is a 4-wheel drive with fairly good handling and good horsepower. It's main drawback is that it's fairly heavy. Another winning choice is the Nissan Pulsar. Be sure to check the drivetrain and get the 4-wheel drive if you go this route. ALSO... You don't HAVE to buy a first car for this game. It is possible to win a 1st car for free. This takes patience; see the following section - "Licensing" - for more info. _________ I - E. LICENSING --------- *** Games in the Gran Turismo series are a little different from many other racing video games. Gran Turismo is designed to be a realistic "driving simulator" with a focus on the physics of the car, as well as countless other factors such as the speed at which you enter and exit turns and the path you take when doing so, et cetera. If you spend a lot of time on the license tests you not only learn about what is necessary to do well in this game, but may find that you also become much better at other racing games. And THAT is why I truly love this game... but hey that's just my opinion. *** Although most consider this section a pain, the license tests are a crucial part of this game. There are a grand total of 6 licenses which can be achieved, each with 10 tests. If you pass all 10 tests in a certain license you get that license. The licenses are: - the B License - the A License - the International C License - the International B License - the International A License, & - the Super License Additionally, for each test there are 3 "trophies" available. The basic is the "bronze" trophy. This will be the easiest to get, with the slowest time requirements; get this and you have passed the test. If you can pass the test with an even faster time you get the silver trophy. If you pass the test with a near-perfect time you get a gold trophy. The time requirements are posted, both on screen during the test, and on the screen when browsing through the available tests within a license. You will not need to be in or even own a car in order to take the license tests, as a car will be provided for you for each test. Unfortunately, you cannot alter the license test cars in any way. Nearly every race in the game will require a certain license. No licenses are necessary for the races in the Sunday Cup. After that you'll need at least the B and/or A license for many races. As you progress, you'll need the International licenses. ** FREE CARS ** If you can manage to get all gold trophies for every test within a license, you get a free car! For the B license you get a Honda S2000, and for the A license a Dodge Concept Car (red version). You can play each license test as many times as you want, even after you've beaten it. In order to get the gold trophy, you'll likely play the same test MANY times. For some tests, the gold trophy is nearly impossible, and sometimes even a silver trophy is extremely difficult to obtain. There are a few tests over rally courses spread out throughout the licenses; these are almost always just flat stupid- easy. When you choose a certain license that you'd like to work on, you're taken to a screen where you can rotate through the tests. You'll be given several options, one of which is "demo". This will show a demonstration of what is necessary to get the gold license. ============================================================================== =================== II. GRAN TURISMO LEAGUE =================== Even though this would seem to be the most logical place to start once you're ready to start racing, one might do best to begin with the "Special Events". Here, the Gran Turismo leage will be discussed first because it appears first. The "G.T. Nationals" don't offer any prize cars. The cash prizes are fairly small, and the horsepower restrictions are fairly low as well. You may find yourself in this area after beating some of the basics in the Special Events. Both the Euro and Pacific Leagues offer some very nice prize cars. The World League is a "series" race with 5 races. You don't have to win every race in 1st place. Rather, you get so many points per race based on your placement upon crossing the finish line, and your score is totalled at the end of the series. There are multiple prize cars available; you don't get to pick the one you want, but you can accumulate several of the best cars in this game by playing this series multiple times. ______________ II - A. G.T. NATIONALS -------------- Again, there are no prize cars given anywhere in the GT Nationals. There are 6 countries, and each country has one track. Horsepower is usually fairly limited, and prize amounts are respectively nominal. Below is a short chart, with the name of the country, the race track, and then the level # with the maximum horsepower allowed, and the prize amount (listed in "k" for "thousands", i.e. "5k" = 5,000 Cr. prize). For example, if you go to the Japan Nationals, you'll have 3 races on Midfield Raceway. One has a horsepower maximum of 197, and a 4,000 Cr. prize. You can also race in the Japan Nationals, on Midfield, with a max horsepower of 295 and a 5,000 Cr. prize, and lastly with a 345 horsepower maximum and a 7,000 Cr. prize. You do not have to race these in any order, or even beat one in order to "unlock" another. EURO LEAGUE ----------- Pretty cut and dry. There are 3 races, as listed below. PACIFIC LEAGUE -------------- Similar to the Euro League, except for a slightly lower HP restriction, and the same 10k prize. WORLD LEAGUE ------------ Again, nothing too complicated to explain. This is a series race of 5 races. There is no "maximum horsepower" restriction, so take your best car. "Championship bonus": 150,000 Prize amounts per race: 1st place: 25,000 2nd place: 10,000 3rd place: 5,000 4th place: 3,000 5th place: 2,000 6th place: 1,000 ...and the races are: 1 - Trial Mountain 2 - Laguna Seca 3 - Apricot Hill 4 - Rome Circuit 5 - Midfield Raceway _______________ II - D. EVENT GENERATOR --------------- The "Event Generator" seems to be more of a novelty than a necessary item in order to complete the game. Although there is a small circle next to the name of each "event" where one would expect to see a trophy appear, there never appears one. Pick a car from your garage, and pick one of the following four skill levels: - Easy - Medium - Hard - Expert ============================================================================== ============== III. SPECIAL EVENTS ============== Due to the nature of the game, there is no one "correct" way to play, although there is somewhat a sense of "order" in what events can be done before others. Essentially, this guide is nothing more than a large chart. Many times you will want to modify the performance of a car as much as possible, or only up to a certain point. These modifications cost money, and it's very helpful to know which races give the most bank (of the ones you can win). On most races there is one single prize car, and you'll win that same car every time you play. If you want to have more than one of the same car, go ahead. Since this is usually pointless, the value of the car might as well be added to the prize amount one gets for that race, since you'll most likely just sell the car. It will also be helpful to know the horsepower restrictions ahead of time, hence the usefulness of this chart/guide. Alas, there is no way to create a "walkthrough" for this game. The best way to present the information is on one large chart, showing: (1) The race categories; (2) The track name; (3) The horsepower restriction; (4) The prize car for that race; (5) The prize car's horsepower rating; (6) The prize car's value; (7) The prize car's drivetrain; (8) The prize amount for the race; and (9) The total between the prize amount for the race and the value of the prize car should it be sold. Unfortunately, that's WAY too much data to put on one page, especially given a limit of 79 characters per line. So, it's been broken down into 3 charts. The first chart gives basic race info: (1) The name of the category each race is in; (2) The name (location) of the race; (3) The horsepower restriction; and (4) The prize amount for that race. Chart 2 lists the info for the prize cars, including: (1) the prize car name, (2) its horsepower, (3) its value, (4) its drivetrain, and (5) the total amount that can be won for the race--namely, the total of the direct prize amount as added to the value of the prize car. Using the "race number" one can cross-reference between charts 1 and 2. If you are looking for, say, specifically a front-wheel drive car, you can look up the prize car's drive- trains in chart 2. You'll notice that you can win a FF ("Front Engine, Front Wheel Drive") car in races 7 through 9, 20 through 25, etc. Note that if you are looking to enter the FF races but don't have an FF car (and don't want to buy one) then you'll have to take a race in a different category where you can win an FF car, and you already have an applicable car for that other race. If you are mainly interested in winning money as quickly as possible, pay close attention to the last column in chart 2. This lists the sum of the race prize and the prize car's value. ** MAJOR HINT ** Take note of race #59, under "GT ALL-STARS", Red Rock Valley. You win the TVR Tuscan Speed 12, which is worth a whopping half million! Oh, not to mention the fifty grand prize just for winning the race itself. Best of all, there's no horsepower restriction for entering the race, so you can take any car you like. Yes, you can race it with the Speed 12, which is a beast of a car, but a booger to control. The Escudo's your best bet. **************** The third chart is a consolidation of the first two. It's convenient because it lists both the category and track name along with the prize car name. Notice though that the "race #" column has been left out. The third chart contains the following elements: (1) the name of the category as it appears on the screen; (2) the name of the race track in that event; (3) the max amount of horsepower you are allowed in order to race that event; (4) the name of the car you win for that race/track; (5) the value of the prize car; and (6) the prize amount for the race/track. ...and now for the charts!... ______________________________________________________________________________ _______ III - A. Once the timer hits 2 hours, finish whatever lap you're on, and accept the placement you're in. It's also listed as "99 laps". If you can finish 99 laps in less than 2 hours, you have finished the race. This can be done in the Escudo, with skill. ============================================================================== =========== IV. RALLY RACES =========== This is a very unique portion of the game. You're not racing against another car per se. Instead you're racing against a ghost car. This is not a ghost car from one of your previous laps, like in the Arcade Mode. You only get one lap around. The game does not tell you what time you have to beat, although it will be the same every time around. You either win or you don't. If you lose, you have to go through a "prize" screen, and your prize is $0. Annoying. Also, there are no cars to be won in the Rally section, unlike GT3. The only reason you have to play this section of the game are (1) to progress through the game to get as close to 100% as possible, (2) it's fun, and (3) it's easy money, sorta. I suggest saving this portion of the game for a time when you have a 4WD car with lots of horsepower and dirt tires. Once you have a car that you know can beat the "hard" level on any track, you can get usually ten grand (10,000 Cr.) in only a single lap without having to check your garage at the end of the race and sell anything. NOTE: You do not have to use a rally car for the rally races. The only requirement is that the car you use have dirt tires. Not all cars have dirt tires equipped or available for purchase -- you'll just have to check them one at a time. You'll have the best luck with a 4WD car. Tracks are listed by track name (all caps), prize amount and the car you'll be up against (the ghost car). Notice that the prize amounts almost always run 5, 8 and 10- thousand Credits, except for Tahiti Dirt Road Route 3 Reverse where the prize that would normally be 8,000 is only 5,000; and the Pike's Peak Hill Climb where the last two prizes are both 25,000 Cr. Beating either of these is very hard, as the Cultus and the Escudo are the #2 and #1 fastest cars in the game. INDIVIDUAL CAR RACES ==================== This portion of the game can be a booger. On the Simulation Mode disk, after pressing "Start Game" you're brought to a "Home" screen. On this screen there are four "cities" (North, West, East and South). Each of these cities features various car manufacturers from a certain part of the globe. Once you select a specific manufacturer you'll USUALLY see a box labelled "event". Here you'll see the name of one or more specific model(s) of car from that manufacturer. So, you have to go to each manufacturer (of those that host events) one at a time, and from there to each "event" for however many models of cars that manufacturer has. Most (but not all) cars feature both a "regular" (stock) version and a "racing" version. You'll want to first race the regular version, then modify your car with racing stripes and win the "racing" version. Whenever possible it is obviously cheaper to use a prize car than to purchase one for the stock race. Not all prize cars can accept racing stripes, meaning you might as well buy one which can be used in both races. Some prize cars will already come with the racing version, which will allow you to participate in the "racing" portion but you'll still have to buy a car in order to participate in the "regular" version. ALSO, there are times when you can buy a "Special" car which just happens to be eligible for the "racing" version race. You'll pay a high price for these Special cars, but they're usually worth keeping.
