Introduction to Rune: Halls of Valhalla (3A) | |-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-| Way back in October 2000, a company called Human Head released a Viking action-adventure game called Rune. Rune was based off of the Unreal Engine, so it was basically Unreal with vikings. The game attracted a sort of cult following, with many becoming addicted to Rune's multiplayer mode. Clans, such as INI and Clashlords (Fun Fact: I was very friendly with the leaders of both clans <_<), became well-known in the Rune community and people strived hard to become members of them. Realizing that they had a potentially big thing on their hands, Human Head created an expansion pack for Rune, called Halls of Valhalla, that greatly expanded on the multiplayer mode of the original Rune, adding an "honor" deathmatch mode and a sort of gory football mode in addition to the pre-existing deathmatch and team deathmatch modes. There is no single player mode in Halls of Valhalla. Yes, you read correct, you can't play any single player games; Rune HOV is strictly online multiplayer. Why did Human Head decide to do this? Only God knows. But it would've been nice to play an all-new campaign :(. Meh, multiplayer is the most fun mode anyway. Here's a list of all of the new stuff Human Head added in Halls of Valhalla: * 15 new character skins to use * 34 new maps to play in, including seven fan-created maps * All new Arena mode, which allows for a controlled deathmatch game * New Headball mode, which is basically a combination of deathmatch and football. * Improved lag handling * The ability to deflect thrown weapons It would've been nice to get some new weapons and powers, as well as a new campaign mode, but Human Head got lazy on us. Sort of like how those wannabe gangstas wear their pants around their ankles because they're too lazy to pull them all the way up. And no, I don't hate gangstas (well, at least the ones that aren't jackasses), I just hate posers :P If you are new to the Rune series, I suggest you read my Gameplay Guide section for more information on how to play the game and the different modes of play. CTRL + F (4A) |=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=| | IV. Mini-Review (3B) | |-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-| As the title suggests, this sections consists of a mini-review. Pay close attention to the word "mini". I'm not going to get too in-depth on the game in this review, I'm just going to give the basic gist. If you'd like to read a much deeper review that explains more about the game and whether or not I consider it to be a good game, you should read my full review for the game located in the link below: http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/review/R95927.html Anyway, on with the mini-review! The RuneMatch/Team RuneMatch modes are back from the original and...they aren't much different than before. Pretty much the exact same modes. You do get to play on some new maps, but there's nothing new gameplay-wise - except that you get to deflect weapons that are thrown at you. But who cares about that, six times out of ten you'll miss and end up getting impaled anyway. There's no campaign mode...WTF? How the hell can you release a game without including a single player mode? Even freaking Big Rigs had one. WTF was Human Head smoking? The arena mode is actually a nice addition, because it simplifies the whole "honor RuneMatch" thing. It also prevents people that intentionally try to piss other people off by messing up honor games from doing what they do best (which, obviously, would be messing up honor games and pissing the players off) by making it impossible for them to do that since there are barriers that don't allow players into a battle until their turn has arrived. Of course, if they have the password to the administrative side of the game, which would allow them to use the Ghost cheat to fly right through the barrier into the battle, that prevents absolutely nothing. But the thought is still there and that is what matters. Headball is fun, but hardly anyone ever plays it for some strange reason. I guess most people aren't too fond of it, but I sure am. As I said before, headball is basically RuneMatch with some football elements. You can have your own Super Rune Bowl: The Decapitators vs. The Warlords! The game could have been very good if Human Head didn't decide to cheap out on us like the greedy bastards they are. They could've at, AT THE VERY FREAKING LEAST, given us ONE new weapon. That's it. That's all I wanted. ONE. NEW. WEAPON. But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, instead they say "LOL, WE GAVE THEM ENOUGH, LET THEM MAKE THEIR OWN WEAPONS ROFFLE." Well, HOV didn't sell as well as it could've. Most likely because Human Head didn't add anything new to alter the gameplay. Payback's a bitch :D. |=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=| | V. Gameplay Guide (4A) | |-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-| If you're new to the Rune series, you definitely should read this entire section as it helps to introduce you to the different elements of Rune. If you're new to Halls of Valhalla, but you've played Rune before, you should skip down to the Newcomers to Halls of Valhalla section instead. CTRL + F (4AB) ************************************** * Newcomers to the Rune Series (4AA) * ************************************** *sniff* *sniff* What's that I smell? The smell of fresh pu-err, meat. So you've never played Rune before? What the hell is the matter with you, how can you have never played a game as fun as this one? DROP DOWN AND GIVE ME 20. Seriously though, a game as fun as this deserve a playthrough by every GameFAQs member. Yes, all 3000000+ GameFAQs members - including the purged accounts and various alternate accounts. It is just that damn fun. As there is already a great FAQ for the single player mode of Rune provided for us by akiraZ (http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/game/913855.html), I will not explain that part of the game to you guys. Besides, this isn't a walkthrough for Rune, it's for Halls of Valhalla. Instead, I will try to familiarize you guys with the multiplayer mode. You might be wondering to yourselves, "What is there to explain about a multiplayer mode? You go in and kill people, simple." Yes, that is the basic gist of multiplayer. But there's a lot of more depth to it than that, and things like unwritten rules and general etiquette that you are expected to know before jumping online. Not following these "codes of Rune" can lead to you becoming very unpopular and disliked in the Rune community and even shunned by its members. ------------------------ | Controls | ------------------------ In case you have unfortunately "misplaced" your Rune instruction manual (*cough* piraters*cough*), I have generously provided the default controls. TargetStrafe is a VERY useful tool that allows you to focus your attacks on a specific player. It automatically locks your camera onto the player closest to you and every direction the targeted player runs to will cause your camera to turn to that specific location. This allows you to get some nasty combos in as you don't have to worry too much about missing an attack. You must take EXTREME precaution and be very careful when using TargetStrage however - because your camera is locked onto the player, you cannot change the view, which allows for someone to sneak up on you from behind and perform a deadly swoop with their sword. The ability to throw your weapon allows for you to turn your swords, axes, and hammers into a variety of protectile weapons. The best projectile weapons would definitely have to be the Dwarven Battle Sword, Dwarven Battle Axe, and the Dwarven Work Hammer. They are the "heavy" two-handed weapons that swing slow but pack a huge punch. You are very likely to get an instant KO with a throw if you use either of the three. Defending yourself is a very important part of the game, and Human Head has realized that. They have provided you with a variety of shields, with each shield holding a unique strength bar. When the bar is depleted, due to the shield taking one too many blows, the shield will break and you will be unprotected, leaving you very vulnerable. You'll find out more about the different types of shields in the Weapons section. CTRL + F (5C) Rune Powers provide a lot of fun and can make a boring game very interesting and exciting. What are Rune Powers, you ask? Well, littered throughout each map are little, square-shaped rocks called...well...Runes. There are three different types of Runes: blue, yellow, and red Runes. Blue Runes provide a small burst of health, prolonging your life. Yellow Runes provide a short burst of energy. When you collect enough of these, you can "trade" the energy provided by them to summon a Rune Power. The Rune Powers vary, selected by whatever weapon you used to summon the Rune Power. They can give do anything from adding a small flame on your sword to add extra damage to giving your weapon the ability to cause a rockfall. Red Runes are special Runes that add to your Bloodlust bar. When your Bloodlust bar is filled, your player becomes enraged and very powerful, allowing to them to perform to super-human feats. It's as if your character turns into an angry Barry Bonds. Online, Rune Powers can even turn the tide of a battle greatly. Most long timers and vets of the game consider the use of Rune Powers as cheap, but most of the community is fine with it - permitting that you don't overuse them, especially the really powerful ones. Each weapon has its own unique Rune Power, some being very weak and some being very powerful. All of them are listed in the Weapons section. CTRL + F (5C) Whenever you're tired of battling, you can just chill and socialize with the other players by making use of the chat function. If you're playing a team message and you have a very important message that you only want your team members to see, you can use a privatized form of the chat function, which only sends your message to the members of your team. This comes in very handy for setting up strategic team attacks to decimate the other team without the other team having a clue of what's going on. ------------------- | Honor Games | ------------------- Honor games are normal RuneMatch games that have been adapted for one-on-one battles. In these games, two people battle to the death. The person that survives takes on the next challenger and they battle to the death. This goes on and on until the game ends - that is, of course, IF the game ends. Anyway, in these types of games, you are strictly forbidden from interrupting an on-going battle. Doing so can result in you being kicked or even banned from that particular server. Not to mention that you'll end up with a bad reputation - which you would deserve anyway because jackasses that do things like that are idiots. Sadly, this sort of thing seems to happen often. Since honor isn't an official game mode, even though you are not allowed to interrupt an honor battle, you still have the ability to do so and some people like to abuse that ability. I don't ever recommend doing that because it only serves to frustrate the people that just want to enjoy a simple one-on-one battle. There are countless other servers in which they aren't playing honor so there's no reason to join that one if you aren't planning on playing honor except to be a bitch and cause trouble. Most clans that open recruitment servers use honor games since they are real tests of your skills. Something that seems to happen a lot in Rune is kill-stealing, which is allowing someone to harm a player to the point of death and then coming out of nowhere and dealing the fatal blow to the injured player. In most games, people don't really mind that but it doesn't show that you have much skill when it comes to actually fighting - it just shows that you know how to steal a kill. :P Honor games, on the other hand, are intended to go uninterrupted. It's just you versus the other player without any unfair advantages. Which is why these types of battles are favored by clans during recruitment. ------------------------ | Online Etiquette | ------------------------ Whenever you play online, you are expected to follow the general, unofficial rules of the community. Here are some of the more common and followed rules: * Don't be cheap - Being cheap is one of the worst things to do not only in Rune, but in any online game. Doing things like overusing Rune Powers, attacking people while they are trying to get health, and the like are things that I consider to be very cheap and that I make a kickable/bannable offense if done often enough. It shows that you have no honor, and you'll sink to the lowest point just to win a game - and you can't even call it a true victory as you needed to resort to unfair tactics to achieve that. Cheats should only be used under the following conditions: - You've created a game for the sole purpose of using cheats. In this situation, everybody should be given the ability to use cheats to avoid being labeled as a bad admin. - You're using cheats for fun/show and not to get an advantage in the game. In this situation, you should NEVER fight using any cheats. Showing cool tricks you can perform using cheats or just flying around to watch a battle is alright, but any misuse of cheats is very bad. Cheating will end up giving you a terrible reputation, and can get you kicked or even banned from some games. Simply put, don't use cheats unless you create a game and you use the cheats for fun or you explicitly state in the game title that cheats will be used. * Respect honor battles - One of the rudest things to do in a game is to interrupt an honor battle. These types of battles are true tests of a player's skills, and by messing up one of them by being a jackass (either by attacking one of the fighters or trying to distract them), you can expect to be placed on the official Rune blacklist - the list that doesn't actually exist but no one ever wants to end up on. There's no excuse for doing that, so respect the fighters and let them battle in peace. * Unless otherwise stated, don't do cheap kills - "Chatkilling", sneaking up on people and killing them, and the like are very looked down upon. In most games, you are not allowed to do things like this, otherwise you risk being kicked or banned from that server. It's unfair and doesn't show that you have any skill at all. UNLESS the administrator of the game themselves says that chat- killing and the like is permitted, DON'T DO IT. Give people a chance to at least defend themselves. When someone is chatting, don't be a punk and sneak kill - NOBODY likes that. I can't tell you how many people I've kicked and banned from my games for doing that crap. * Remember: It's just a game! - Don't take this game too seriously. Throwing a bitch fit or temper tantrum over losing a fight is a quick and easy way to make yourself very unpopular. Also, leaving a game after losing a battle just shows that you are really immature and can't handle losing. This isn't the Olympics, it's just a game about Vikings going around slicing off each other's limbs. **************************************** * Newcomers to Halls of Valhalla (4AB) * **************************************** So you know the basics of Rune, right? Well, you've pretty much mastered Halls of Valhalla. The gameplay and controls are identical to the original Rune, so there isn't much to introduce to you. I'll just give you guys an in-depth run-down of the new elements brought in by HoV. ------------------ | Arena Mode | ------------------ This is an honor game fan's dream come true. While, for the most part, the community of Rune is civilized and mature, there are a few little bastards that sneak in through the cracks. I bet you everyone that has played Rune for at least three months has encountered at least three people who don't seem to understand the concept of honor games. They are supposed to be fair battles between two people, but some people seem to think they can jump into these battles and mess them up. This is easily fixed by kicking, or if the situation is bad enough, banning the troublemakers from your server, but it still causes a lot of aggravation. After hearing the cries of the members of the Rune community who had been pissed off repeatedly by jackasses like that, Human Head decided to create an official honor mode, called Arena. Arena is essentially the same as regular honor battles, except with one major difference - it is impossible for someone to interrupt a battle that is currently in progress. Games are played in matches and the people that play in each match are the Champions and the Challengers. The Champions are the people that have won the previous match and the Challengers are the people that are battling them. Challengers are selected based on the order they arrived in while waiting for a chance to battle and the only way into a battle is to be a selected Challenger. In Arena maps, there are two general areas in each and every map - the battle area and the safe area. The battle area is, obviously, where you battle. The safe areas are areas in which you cannot be harmed by anyone. You can prepare for an upcoming battle by collecting whatever weapons you think are necessary for a victory. You also respawn from death in these areas. Some of the maps have time-killers, such as targets for you to throw your weapons at or levers that, when pulled, spawn a human head. There is a pair of numbers in the upper right-hand corner of the screen in every Arena game - basically, it looks like this: x-x. That is your win-lose count. In Arena, your score is based on how many battles you win and not how many people you kill, which is why in team Arena games, even if you die, if your team member(s) successfully kill the opposing team, you will still win the battle and have the win added to your win total. Every time you win a battle, the number on the left will increase by 1 and every time you lose a battle, the number on the right will increase by 1. As mentioned before, Arena games can be either one-on-one or team based. The size of each Arena team can be anywhere from one (making a one-on-one Arena game) to four. A match will only start when there are enough players to make even teams, so you should on make three-on-three or four-on-four during the time of day when Arena servers are busiest. --------------------- | Headball Mode | --------------------- This, in my opinion, is the most fun mode out of all of the default available modes but, sadly, the Rune community doesn't agree - there are rarely ever ANY Headball servers up. You'd better get used to seeing "0 Players, 0 Servers" whenever clicking on the Headball tab when checking for a game to play online. Anyway, Headball is possibly one of the most unique modes I have ever seen in a game like this. As I've said earlier in this FAQ, it's basically RuneMatch combined with football. The object of the game is to cut off the head of one of your opposing team members and then to take their head, run to an opposing team's goal, and throw the head into the goal to score a point. I, myself, find Headball very fun and addictive but the rest of the community doesn't. I find a few people from time to time when playing online that say they like Headball as well, but that number is so miniscule, you need a microscope to see it. The game doesn't start until a member from each team each in the game pushes the lever that is the same color as their team. This means that if you are on the red team, you are supposed to push the red lever, blue team, blue level, and so on and so forth. The default weapon you spawn with in the game is the Viking Broad Sword, but the best weapon to use in Headball would be either the Dwarven Work Sword or the Dwarven Battle Sword, so look for those weapons as they will make decapitations incredibly easy. Your score is based off the amount of points you gain from throwing a head into an enemy team's goal. There are two types of goals: the close goal and the far goal. Scoring a goal on the close goal nets you three points while reaching for the far goal gets you five points. The amount of people that you have decapitated can be found in the Scoreboard, but that number has absolutely no effect on your score. You can also see how many times you have been decapitated, under the Beheaded column. Note that ONLY decapitations and beheadings are added to those totals - "clean" deaths are pretty much nothing as far as Headball cares. |=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=| | VI. Maps (5A) | |-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-| There are a ton of maps in Halls of Valhalla, more of them than the amount of pounds that Oprah has lost. In this section, I'll list all of the maps for each gametype, give a detailed description on them, how to play in them, and my personal favorite maps. As this section is quite large, I've created a small navigation guide to help you get to a specific map quickly by means of using the Find feature. Just press CTRL + F and type in the letters/numbers combination found next to each map name to get to the one you're looking for. Both rooms contains a small skylight and a tarp that brings you up to the second floor when you jump on it. One of the rooms also includes a Trial Pit Mace while the other has a Viking Axe. Both of the rooms are illuminated by small fires burning in two holes in walls. In the main area of the floor, there are four tarps, each located in a corner of the room. There is a Dwarven Work Hammer, a Bloodlust Rune, and a Sigurd's Axe. Over the center of the floor is a small footbridge that takes players on the second floor of the map from one side to the other. Above that is another footbridge that runs perpendicular to the first, bringing players on the third floor of the map from side to side. The only way to gain access to the second floor of the map is to use one of the tarps on the first floor to get up to the third floor. From there, you have to jump down onto the second floor bridge. On both ends of the bridge are two small rooms that resemble the small rooms of the first floor. The rooms are illuminated by fires in holes in their walls. One of the rooms contains a Trial Pit Mace while the other holds a Viking Broad Sword. In the center of the bridge is a Health Rune. In each room is a tarp that brings players to the fourth floor of the building. On the third floor, you can look up and watch the sun and stars through an open ceiling. There are no weapons or Runes located on this floor, but each side of the bridge leads you to a small walkway in which you can pick up a Dark Shield. In these two walkways are a pair of stairways that lead up to the fourth and highest floor. In one of the walkways, taking one of the stairways will lead you to another Bloodlust Rune while the other walkway will allow you to wield a Sigurd's Axe. There is also a lizard located right next to it. In the other walkway, you will find another Bloodlust Rune (Human Head sures like rage...) up one staircase, and a Dwarven Work Sword and a lizard up the other. Depending on which staircase you take, you'll end up on a certain side of the fourth floor. One side contains two Viking Wooden Shields inside of the floor and a Dwarven Battle Sword on a small platform that juts out from building. The other side of the floor contains another two Viking Wooden Shields, but rather than a Dwarven Battle Sword on its small platform, there is a Dwarven Battle Axe. Both sides of the floor have a huge opening on the floor inside of the building, allowing you to drop down to the second floor easily and quickly. ---------------------- |III. The type of skin you select has no affect on how you will play - all they are there for is for decoration. In this section, I'll give a general description on what each skin looks like. Contact Information (6A) | |-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-| If you have any questions about my FAQ or Halls of Valhalla itself, I am very easy to get in contact with. You can email me at [email protected] or [email protected]. If you have AOL Instant Messenger, you can instant message either Xboxlover3 or ModHunterz. I am an administrator for the YA RLY message boards (http://yarly.thisisgod.net), so you can always get in contact with me that way. If you have a GameFAQs account, look for me on Life, the Universe, and Everything, The Elite, the Rune: Halls of Valhalla board, the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas boards (PS2 + Xbox), or Message Board Help. There's tons of boards I visit regularly, but I'm only giving you the boards I check on a daily basis. Make sure you don't make any attention topics (ex: "ATTN: Xboxlover2") on the latter three boards I have mentioned as they have topicality and can result in you being moderated. And I don't need people whining at me for getting them modded. :P |=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=| | X.
