Credits 001-General Information --------------------------------------------------------- This is a walkthrough for the PC game called Nancy Drew: Creature of Kapu Cave. It's the fifteenth game in the Nancy Drew series, in which you play as Nancy Drew and go around and solve mysteries. If you want to contact me, e-mail [email protected], but make the subject blank if you do. If you want to reproduce this guide in some fashion, you should contact me before doing so. 002-Video Guide --------------------------------------------------------- Hey! Want to see how to beat the game instead of reading about it? Well, I've got a video walkthrough, and you can see it at... http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=26547B5642FE124A This guide gives a slightly more linear game path than the video walkthrough does, but the videos have lots of description to help you find a specific part, if a specific part of the game is what you're looking for. 003-Characters --------------------------------------------------------- Nancy Drew: Our heroine! She's a super-mystery solver, and she's about to take a vacation in Hawaii. But, of course, just like every other vacation Nancy takes, it soon evolves into a mystery. Which is okay, because solving mysteries is just as much fun as going on vacation. "Big Island" Mike Mapu: The owner of Big Island Mike's. He likes to force people to do jobs for him. Pua Mapu: Mike's daughter, who is a surfer. Frank and Joe Hardy are investigating her, to make sure she's on the level. Richard Aikens: He owns Aikens Biotech. He yells a lot. Dr. Quigley Kim: Nancy's boss, a quirky entomologist. Frank and Joe Hardy: Two detectives who are Nancy's friends. They are solving a mystery at the same time she is. Ned Nickerson: Nancy's boyfriend, who she can call in this game. Fiderman: An employee of Dr. Craven, who is fired for incompetence. 004-Walkthrough --------------------------------------------------------- The game starts with Nancy taking you to her room. You can click on the "How to be a Detective" for a short explanation of the game's control scheme--which is unnecessary if you've played the other Nancy Drew games and can remember how to play. You can click on the scrapbook to look at descriptions of the other games in the series. You can click on the case file to learn about the upcoming case. Here's a summary of the plot: Nancy Drew is going to Hawaii for three weeks. Yay! A three week vacation! While there, she's going to spend time with her entomologist (insect-studying) friend, Dr. Quigley Kim. All Nancy has to do is pick up the keys from Big Mike, and then head off to the rain forest to meet Dr. Kim. Pretty easy, right? That's all you can do here, so click on the plane ticket to start the game! Choose Junior or Senior Mode, and you're on your way! The game starts with a somewhat spooky cutscene of something destroying Dr. Quigley's camp. Hey, that's not very nice! I bet we'll learn more about that later. Then the game picks up with Nancy being dropped off at Big Island Mike's. Head straight forward into the building and talk to the big guy, who happens to be Big Island Mike. Big Island Mike tries to get you to accept his real island vacation package, where he'll plan a bunch of activities for you to do over the next few weeks. The gimmick is that the activities aren't normal touristy vacation activities, but REAL activities that REAL Hawaiians have been doing for thousands of years! That's awful nice of Big Island Mike, but Nancy's here to pick up the car keys and meet Dr. Kim, not to plan her vacation. Big Mike gives you a somewhat ominous warning about the Hilihili research center. When Nancy tries to get the keys from Big Island Mike, he refuses to give them to her. No, first, Big Island Mike wants you to try out one of his fun REAL Island Activities! Make him an aloha necklace, and you'll see how much fun his activities are! Wow, Big Island Mike is really trying to get you to sign up for his vacation package, isn't he? Anyway, it looks like you'll have to make him a necklace. Leave the building, and turn right. On the patios here are a snow cone machine, some sort of money-trading booth, a locked case, and a necklace area. Head to the necklace area, and flip through the book to see what an aloha necklace looks like, so you'll know what kind of shells to get. From here, head down to the beach area, past the closed surf shack. Ned Nickerson, Nancy's boyfriend, calls and Nancy not-so-nicely hangs up on him to talk with Frank and Joe Hardy, the Hardy Brothers. The Hardy Brothers are undercover, checking out Mike Mapu (that's Big Island Mike) and his daughter, Pua. See, some person named Richard Aikens (of Aikens Biotech) has hired them to investigate the Mapus. Unfortunately, you're playing as Nancy, not as the Hardy Boys, so you don't get to investigate the Mapus. The Hardy Boys tell you about Kane Okala, a local story about a guy who fell into a volcano and walks around causing trouble for people. They also tell you the local pineapple crop is doing poorly. We'll hear more about those things later. So now you get to wander the beach, looking for the various shells that are hidden here. They are: Two by the small pool. One in the dark sand on the beach. One by the log under the dock. One at the base of the coconut tree. One near the starfish (you see the starfish when you walk from the three to the dock). Once you've gotten the shells, head back to Big Island Mike's, and go to the necklace area to make your aloha necklace. They way to put shells on your necklace is to put a shell on at the top end of the string, and let it slide to the bottom, instead of trying to put it on at the bottom, where it should go. Now that you've made your necklace, you should go back to Big Island Mike. Oh, and you probably should call Ned and apologize for hanging up on him earlier--in this game, it's optional if you want to talk with Ned or not. I'm sure that the Ned Nickerson fans are disappointed that Ned's role in this game is optional...but then again, I'm sure the Bess and George fans are even MORE disappointed, seeing as Bess and George aren't in this game at all. Talk to Big Island Mike and he warns you about Kane Okala, saying that the people at Hilihili have offended him. I don't think Kane Okala is doing anything bad, though, because he's not real. But it could be that someone is using the story of Kane Okala to...DO EVIL THINGS!!! Grab the keys, then leave to the car, outside of Big Mike's. Use the car's built-in system to drive to Camp Quigley, where Dr. Quigley is staying. Three bad things happen once you do this: 1) The bridge leading to the mainland collapses, stranding you in the forest area with Dr. Quigley. 2) Nancy's car gets stuck in a ditch. 3) Dr. Quigley's camp is trashed (but you knew that already from watching the opening cutscene) You can examine the camp to see that there's a solar panel and a winch. Left of the solar panel is a tape recorder that you need to rewind and listen to. The March 28th entry contains the sounds of opening Dr. Quigley's trunk. Head inside the tent, where you can find the radio. Try turning it on to see that it doesn't have any power. Also inside the tent is Dr. Quigley's green trunk. Play with the lock to see that each key makes a sound when pressed. What you have to do is press the keys in the order they were pressed on the tape recording. That order is Blee, blah, blih, bluh, bluh, blah, blah, blue, or 64511443. Inside is Dr. Quigley's journal about Malachi Herbert Craven. You'll meet him shortly. Also inside the trunk is a hook for the winch, a Hilihili security pass, and a phone number. Leave the tent, and look at the solar panel. Nancy comments that it powers the radio. You have to look at the radio, then the solar panel in order for Nancy to realize she needs some photovoltaic cells. Now to get the car out of the ditch. Put the hook from the trunk onto the winch. It's a little hard to see, but there's a whitish-tan thing that the hook can latch onto, left of the winch. Put the hook on the winch. Then click on the hook and the front of the car. Then zoom in on the winch and press the buttons to pull up the rope, which pulls the car up. Yay, it's out of the ditch! Now, go to the Hilihili Research Facility by clicking on the car and travelling there. You have two things to do here: investigate about Quigley and the Hilihili pass card, and get some photovoltaic cells. Use the card on the machine to the left (or just press the button to talk to someone), and you get rushed into the facility to meet Dr. Malachi Craven. He's an angry fellow, but Nancy gets on his good side by complimenting him and his blog. Talk to Dr. Craven about everything. When Nancy asks for some photovoltaic cells, he gives you the job of collecting viable seeds. Turn around and go downstairs, then go forward to where the plants are (not the lockers). At the very end, on the right, you can see the vines on the wall. Click on any part of the vines, and a pod shows up. Open it, and click on any viable seeds. Those are the seeds that are brown, with a white spot, NOT the ones with a brown stripe. The notecard tells you those are the ones to pick. Once you pick twelve seeds, go back to Dr. Craven in order to get the photovoltaic cells. He talks about being prescribed an antihistamine that makes him sleepy. This will be important later in the game, when you get to sneak around while he sleeps. For now, finish talking with Dr. Craven and leave the lab through the door at the base of the stairs. Then go to Camp Quigley and look at the solar panel. The panel is made up of four groups of nine. Every time a row or column is filled correctly, a green light goes on. 3 2 7 1 8 9 4 5 6 6 5 4 9 8 1 7 2 3 1 9 5 8 6 1 6 2 8 3 7 4 7 4 3 5 2 9 Once all the green lights are on, attach the hook to the panel and raise it with the winch. Then go inside the tent and turn on the radio. The note inside the folder on this table says to call at frequency 18.305. Use the knobs to adjust the frequency. The right knob switches between numbers, and the left knob inputs numbers. Press the left knob up or down to change the numbers, you see? Nancy calls Dr. Quigley, but the static is very bad. It sounds like she's at Green Trigger Rock, wherever that is. It's time for Nancy to call in the Hardy Boys for some help. Joe Hardy Investigates ---------------------- You can now control Joe Hardy. Joe's goal is to investigate the Mapus and find out where Green Trigger Rock is. Head to Big Island Mike and talk to him about everything. He'll tell you about his Try It and Trade It system, which is a big rip-off move by him. Basically, you have to do a lot of work for Big Island Mike in order to do things at his Immersion Excursion. For example, you can be like Nancy and collect sea shells in order to make necklaces. You can trade these necklaces in for Big Island Bucks, which can be used to buy seashells to make MORE necklaces. The cycle continues forever, and it feels like it takes forever to get enough shells to make even ONE necklace, because the seashells appear randomly. They show up in the same places Nancy found the seashells in. Talking to Mike about the Try It and Trade It system allows you to ask him if he ever takes time off. He says that he'll leave if Joe catches six Ulua fish for him. He gives you a box for putting the fish in. When you leave the building, there's an earthquake. Woah! Head to the beach, and you can talk to Pua by the surfer shack. Pua is Big Island Mike's daughter. She's the one the Hardy Boys are investigating. You can talk to Pua about a lot of things. She loves surfing, and she believes in Kane Okala. She gets kind of mad that Frank thinks she's being superstitious. Once you finish talking with Pua, head to the dock, where you can fish. Put a worm on the hook, then click an area to cast your line. Watch the line, and when the bobber sinks, that means a fish is on the line. Click on the fishing rod when this happens to pull in the fish. You want to catch six Ulua, but it doesn't hurt if you catch loads of other fish, because the non-Ulua fish that you catch will get turned into Big Island Bucks. Conveniently, you have an infinite amount of bait during this challenge. Later on in the game, that's not the case. The fishing takes a while, so you might want to go shell searching every now and then to break up the monotony, and to add to your shell collection. When you catch the six Ulua, Frank stops fishing. Go to Big Island Mike and give him the fish. Then go to Pua to trade in the fish for Big Island Bucks. When this happens, Big Island Mike leaves his office. Return to Big Island Mike's office to investigate, now that he's gone. There's a note on the calendar about JK, as well as a key. Use the key to unlock the door to the back room. Inside the back room, there is a cabinet. Open the fourth drawer from the top to find a map. Joe reads it and finds the coordinates for a place called Three Finger Rock. He calls Nancy and gives her the coordinates, shortly before he is knocked unconscious. Poor Joe! Nancy, the Frassy Detective --------------------------- Go to the car, then enter the coordinates: N 19, 24, 42 and W 155, 9, 1. You can now go to Three Finger Rock. This is a longish pathway, with various flagged locations on the side. For now, go all the way to the end of the pathway and look up at the tree to meet Dr. Quigley. Quigley is quirky, and she tends to digress a lot. She wants her clipboard. Go all the way back to Camp Quigley. The clipboard is in the tent, on a wooden box. Face the exit, then turn right to find the clipboard in a corner. Return to Quigley. She is upset that the first page of the clipboard was torn off, and she gives Nancy the job of retrieving all the information. First, we'll have to get frass samples from every single station, namely, those colored areas that you see off to the side when walking down the path. The red, blue, yellow and purple ones are all here at Three Finger Rock. Just look at a station, grab a plastic bag, and use it on the circular container to get a sample. The clipboard says the other two samples are at Kapu Cave. Read the clipboard to see that the coordinates for Kapu Cave are N 19, 20, 30 and W 155, 5, 33. Insert them on the GPS and go to Kapu Cave. Collect the two samples here. You can explore a bit, but there's not much to see besides the puzzle that blocks the entrance to the cave. Okay, samples collected! What's next? The clipboard says that we need to identify the plants that are near the frass samples. Nancy will have to get information about the various species of plants here in Hawaii, which the Hardy Boys can easily get. Frank Hardy Investigates ------------------------ This is easy enough. Go to Big Island Mike's main office, and check out the machine by the front desk. Use a Big Island Buck on the machine, then click "Hawaiian Plants". Read all of the descriptions, and the information is added to Nancy's organizer. At this time, you can call the pawnbroker to investigate who knocked Joe unconscious. It appears to be a guy named Johnny Kuto. You don't have to do this, however. Talk to Pua about her father. She reveals that there is some sort of secret underwater chamber nearby, which her dad has been visiting. The chart which leads to the chamber is inside a trunk. The trunk is outside of Big Island Mike's near some chairs. The trunk is locked, though. The combination is the name of Big Island Mike's favorite shave ice flavor. When you ask Big Island Mike, he challenges you to figure it out on your own, by trying out different flavors. He will tell you if you get a flavor correct. The solution is the middle syrup in row one, the middle syrup in row two, and the rightmost syrup in row three. That gives you an orange and blue and green shave ice. Give this to Big Island Mike. He likes it, and he says it is called Honi 'awa. Use this combination to open the trunk. Pull out the map to see a picture that looks a lot like Kapu Cave. Say, could Kapu Cave be the hidden area that Mr. Mapu keeps visiting? Nancy and More Frass -------------------- Frank calls Nancy as soon as he sees the map, and the game reverts to Nancy. Nancy can now enter the vegetation codes on the clipboard, thanks to Frank's investigation. Red: 10 Blue: 08 Purple: 04 Green: 11 Orange: 11 Yellow: 06 Next, the clipboard says to weigh the samples, which involves looking through the microscope. Check out the microscope to learn that it is broken. Where can Nancy get another one? Go to the Hilihili Research Facility. Dr. Craven should have a microscope lens. Talk to the call box by pressing the button, and Nancy is let inside. Dr. Craven wants Nancy to earn the microscope lens by doing a quick job with the plants. Take his key, then go downstairs. Use the key on the fertilizing machine, which is in the bottom area, sort of near the gray machines. There are seven types of fertilizer. Some help certain plants and some hurt certain plants. Use a fertilizer by selecting a color, then pressing the green button in the upper/right. Use the second from the left color (light blue) twice. Use the lefmost color (green) after that, and the puzzle is solved. Then, return to Dr. Craven to get the microscope lens. When Nancy leaves the Hilihili, she overhears Dr. Craven firing an employee named Fiderman. Return to Campe Quigley, and use the lens on the microscope. Nancy can now look at the frass bags in more detail. Each bag is made up of seeds, insect parts and frass. A picture of all these things is kept in the clipboard. What you're supposed to do is weigh each bag. Remove all the non-frass items to learn what the frass weighs. Note how many seeds, frass and insect parts there are, in order to determine the Detritus Predominance code, listed on the final page of the clipboard. This is a lot of work. Fortunately, the answers are the same every time you play the game, so you can simply enter them on the clipboard without weighing every bag. Red: 10 99 12 405 Blue: 08 108 8 505 Purple: 04 119 9 105 Green: 11 44 3 505 Orange: 11 37 5 305 Yellow: 06 150 9 105 Enter those numbers on the clipboard, then put the clipboard into the machine near the microscope. The machine analysis it and gives Nancy the number 119,456. Go to Quigley and Three Finger Rock and tell her this number. She is excited, but you're not done yet. You need to figure out what has caused such a strange reaction among the bugs. Quigley suspects that it's Dr. Craven's new experimental plant. Go to the Hilihili Research Facility and talk to the doctor. Then go away from him and head towards the exit. This makes him think Nancy has left. Turn around and go to Dr. Craven. He is sleeping. This lets you do various things, like examine his PDA and lab coat. The PDA is on the desk. When you touch it, it makes noise. Quickly, go to settings and turn the volume to "mute". Go through the employees list, until you find Fiderman, who was recently fired. He has high level security, and his number is 14-667-93. His locker is number 13, and the combo is R4 L2 L7 R9. Nancy says this information out loud when you scroll through the employees list and the locker information list. Go to locker #13 and insert that combination, pressing the green button to insert a number. The locker opens and you get a yellow suit. This gives Nancy access to the restricted area near the lockers. This area is sort of like a maze. There's a small room in the back of this area. Inside this room is a computer. Use it and enter Fiderman's employee number: 1466793. Check out shipping, then extract codes. Nancy deduces that the new plant is HH3333, and the Hardy Boys' employer ordered a lot of it. When you leave the computer, the alarm sounds. Uh oh! Nancy will have to sneak out without being seen! Leave the room. The plant we're looking for is on the left, and it's HH3333. Take a leaf of it, then step back. Turn right, then go forward to the wall. Turn left, then go forward to the wall. Turn left, then go forward once. A guard is here! Turn left to dodge him. Go through this area until you see another guard. When he is looking right, move forward past him. Turn right and go forward to the wall. Turn right, and go forward to the wall again. Turn right, and you'll be behind the guard near the exit. Simple go forward once, then turn left to reach the exit. Return to Camp Quigley at this point. The last page of the clipboard says what to do here. Go to the test tubes. It's very simple. Use the leaf sample on a test tube. Use the solution (in the jar with an eye dropper built into the lid) on the tube, then click it to put it on the row. Click the frass bag in the lower/right. Put two drops in the test tube, then click it. It doesn't match the plant from the Hilihili. Return to Quigley at Three Finger Rock. She tells Nancy to analyze the samples in her backpack. Grab them, then go back to Camp Quigley. Go to the test tube area and pull out the samples. Use each sample on a test tube, and add some of the solution to each test tube. It turns out that fritillated flag beetles is the match. Return to Dr. Quigley and tell her this. She has no idea what these results mean. If Nancy is right, the caterpillars are eating a lot of fritillated flag beetles. But then, where have all the flag beetles come from? Quigley also tells Nancy about a ring she found. Take it from the backpack. This ring is the key to opening Kapu Cave. Go to Kapu Cave and use the nose ring on the giant face. Now, Nancy can move the teeth. You want them to look like the pictures on the map that Frank Hardy saw. The description of this map is inside Nancy's notebook. Specifically, the map has a picture of these animals: eel, turtle, shark, manta ray, porcupine fish, octopus, crab and urchin. Spin the teeth to show these eight animals, one on each tooth. The top row, from left to right, is made of a shark, an eel, a turtle and an octopus. The bottom row, from left to right, is made of a porcupine fish, a crab, an urchin and a manta ray. Nancy calls the Hardy Boys before entering. Go forward through the cave, which has a few dangerous puzzles. Nancy can jump over the first and second gaps in the path, but the third gap is too far for her to cross. Pull on the tongue of the statue here to make a platform appear, which shortens the gap. She can now jump over the third gap. After the lava, there is a path with several things to see, such as fire and light and water. At the end of this area, you see a puzzle. Click on the four things, in the order you saw them: water, air, fire and rocks. The light she saw apparently doesn't count. Solving this puzzle sends Nancy to a new area. Go across the bridge for another puzzle. Put the pictures in order, from first to last. The order is: 3 1 6 5 4 2 The machine looks to the right. Turn right to avoid the giant boulder. Once Nancy gets past the boulder, the game switches to the Hardy Boys. Snorkeling to Kapu Cave ----------------------- If you remember, Pua said there's a hidden underwater entrance to Kapu Cave. You need 30 Big Island Bucks to snorkel to the hidden entrance, though. You can make necklaces or go fishing to earn Big Island Bucks. Of course, you'll need to spend Big Island Bucks to buy fish bait. Once you get the money, go the beach. Near the dark sand, go out into the water. Swim left and go forward to the currents. The symbols on the map which opened the Kapu Cave Teeth are here underwater. Follow the path of the currents, in the order of the pictures: shark, turtle, octopus, porcupine fish, crab, urchin and manta ray. Click on the pictures to move through this area, but do it quickly because you don't have a lot of time. Our hardy hero arrives in Kapu Cave, shortly after Nancy escapes death at the hands of the giant boulder. Walk along the edges of this area to reach the other side of the bridge. Climb up over the puzzle, now that the block is gone and go forward. Go through this area, and Frank reaches a closed door. Press the button on the right to open the door, then go forward into a large room. Look around and you will see crates. Examine them to see that they are covered in fritillated flag beetles. This must be where all the beetles have come from. Big Island Mike and Pua appear. They talk about what has been going on. Mike has large debts to pay, debts that he can only pay if the Hilihili Research Center goes out of business. Therefore, he has been using illegal means to try to get the center shut down. Another earthquake occurs, starting a puzzle. You have to jump from rock to rock, to reach the exit. The correct sequence is randomly determined each time you play the game, so you're on your own here! Jump from block and make it to the exit on the right, before Big Island Mike makes it to the exit on the left. That's it! The ending to the game plays, as well as the preview for the next game in the Nancy Drew series. 004-Credits --------------------------------------------------------- This FAQ is copyright of The Lost Gamer, 2011.
