If you find some, make sure you take it and equip it. Helmets are also a very important piece of equipment. If your helmet gets blown off, make sure you replace it immediately with a helmet from a downed soldier (sometimes you can pick the same helmet back up, too). II) Double clicking items in your inventory. - When you're examining another inventory, double clicking an item from your inventory will move it to the other inventory, and double clicking on an item in the other inventory will move it to yours. Double clicking on an item that has a lot more than can fit in one spot in your inventory will fill all of your available slots with that item (unless there isn't enough of the item to do that). This is helpful for quickly moving items in your inventory. If you only have a single unit's inventory open, double clicking on ammo will reload your gun. III) Equipping things from your inventory. - To equip helmets, body armor, or weapons from your inventory, simply double click on the item. You'll be able to tell if it's equiped by the change in background shading (it'll change to a light blue). IV) Using landmines, repair kits, and other things. - In Soldiers: Heroes of World War II, the U key was your "use" command that let you use matches, mines, et cetera. In Faces of War, though, if you want to use landmines or a repair kit, you'll need to open the second gray tab on the right side of a soldier's control panel, then click on the landmine icon (it'll only be lit up if you have mines in your inventory). Select where you want the soldier to set the mines, and he'll set them all in a group near that spot. You'll have to stop him after each one if you want him to spread them out a little. The same procedure needs to be done for repair kits and some other objects. V) Tactical mode vs Arcade mode. - When starting a mission, you're given two difficulty setting choices, Arcade or Tactical. Your soldiers will die way easier in Tactical mode, but things seem to be less chaotic there (and I might be imagining it, but your soldiers also seem to be more accurate). Arcade mode is a lot less frustrating though, since your soldiers are ridiculously resilient in that mode. VI) Attacking while prone is a huge help. - Got a tough target that needs eliminating? Go prone (space bar on your keyboard) and crawl towards it. Your soldiers can live through ridiculous amounts of nonsense when they're crawling. VII) The narration text from the game that I've included in this guide. - The text blocks that I've included in this guide are as-is (I left the typos and so forth in it on purpose). Please don't send me corrections for spelling/grammar found in the game text sections, as there's probably a 99% chance that's how the text appeared in the game. The translations are pretty bad sometimes. Even the voice actors seem confused by some of the lines they read, and yet they either didn't object or they objected and no one cared. =============================================================================== ------------------------------- | | | 0.10) Important Controls | | | ------------------------------- =============================================================================== If you never played Soldiers: Heroes of World War II or if it's just been a long time since you played it, I highly suggest you play through the training missions. I'll also list some of the most important control features in this section: I) Direct Control. There are three ways to enter the "Direct Control" feature. The first is by pressing the End key to turn the feature on, and then pressing it again to turn it off. The second way (which is the way I recommend you always do it) is by holding down the Control key for the duration of the time you want to stay in Direct Control mode. The third method is to click the Direct Control button when you have a unit selected (it's on the vertical bar on the right side of the minimap). You'll have to click the icon again to release direct control. Direct control is useful for making very quick, precise attacks. Units are a lot more accurate in Direct Control, and you can pick your targets much easier. Direct Control is also extremely useful for driving vehicles into tight spots, or escaping quickly from heated battles. It's also wonderful for controlling the fuses on grenades (commonly known as "cooking"). II) Free Fire, Return Fire, and Hold Fire (and also Hold Position). You can set a unit to any one of these three basic commands when the unit is not being Directly Controlled. To set these, simply click on one of the corresponding icons on the box on the right side of your command bar (they're on the left tab, middle row). Hold Fire means that the unit will absolutely not fire at anything, no matter what, until you tell it to. This is almost always the safest way to go, simply because your units are not exactly smart, and can easily get themselves killed for stupid reasons if they fire at something you didn't want them to fire at, or if they throw a grenade while standing in front of a wall or another one of your units. Return Fire means that your unit will fire back if it is fired upon. This is fairly safe, but you won't want to use it most of the time. Your units tend to waste their ammo shooting at things they can't hit, or they return fire with grenades and kill themselves or your other units. Free Fire means the unit will fire at anything that gets too close. This is rarely a good idea for several of the reasons listed above. The only time I recommend using this is when you need to slaughter a lot of troops at one time. You can set one or more men to Free Fire, and then take Direct Control of another unit. This also works great for setting up a cover line to retreat the unit you're direct-controlling if it gets into serious trouble. In addition to the three firing commands, there's also the absolutely critical Hold Position command. Always keep your units set to this, or they constantly defy your commands and do idiotic things the entire game. III) Hotkeys. Several actions have keys assigned to them so you can perform them quickly without using your mouse. I'll list the most important ones here, in no particular order. Note that most of these features can also be opened with various icons on your display. E) Exits a vehicle/gun. Depending on what you're exiting, you'll be given a cursor, and you must then click on where you want your unit(s) to exit to. +) Reloads your current weapon. This is one of the more valuable hotkeys. O) Opens the mission objectives list. F6) This puts your unit in the Melee attack mode when applicable. You can use a troop to run up to an enemy troop and smack them, causing the enemy to fall down for a while. Note that this DOES NOT ALWAYS MAKE THE UNIT STAY DOWN. They will sometimes get back up when you least expect it. On the plus side, it's quite amusing when you can get a good multi-unit fist fight going inside a building or something. (Note that you can also use the icon on the top of your command bar to activate and deactivate this feature.) X) This examines the target. Use this to have a soldier check a vehicle's inventory or check the contents of some crates. Very useful, especially for transfering equipment from one soldier to another. D) Drops the item you have in your hand. This is used a lot when you're carrying barrels, boxes, and so on. I) This will open the selected unit's inventory. Space) This will make a selected soldier go into the Prone position, which is useful when you need to sneak around or take cover quickly. Backspace) This will allow you to adjust the speed of the game. Beginners will probably want to stick with the default speed, but as you get used to the game, you'll find that fast-forward is very useful when you're moving long distances or waiting for patrols to cycle. Tab) This will make items and objects on the ground light up in red, so you'll be able to see them. Hovering over them will also tell you what they are. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.00) Walkthrough 1.10) German Campaign ============================================================================= | ------------------------- | | | | | | | 1.1A) Basic Training | | | | | | | ------------------------- | ============================================================================= "For three months we've been taught all things not just soldiers but the best warriors of Germany must know to do. And today is sort of our final and if I want to serve the cause of the Reich I need to pass it with excellence." "During long months of training, they did their best to create perfect fighters worthy of defending Germany. But all training comes to and end one day. Today we're passing our final exam, the biggest exam of our lives. Those who pass it will be granted the hightest honour: to fight for our country within the ranks of the best German units." ------------------ Friedentahl, Germany Primary Objectives 8 September 1944 ------------------ 1) Get to the boat-house and open the gates for the squad. - Before the game gives you this objective, you'll have to make your way north to the other side of the water. Just do what the narrator tells you to do until you reach the water. Once you swim to the other side, go prone (use the space bar) and crawl through the hole under the west side of the gate. When you're on the north side, you'll be able to click on the gate to unlock it. 2) Hit all targets at the shooting range. - Continue north from the gate and click on the giant ladder to climb up to the firing range. Follow the narrator's instructions to get targets to appear for you. 3) Destroy the vehicles using AT grenades. - Grab some anti-tank grenades from the crates in the south end of the vehicle yard and destroy both tanks closest to the crates. 4) Hit all targets using AP grenades. - Grab some anti-personnel grenades from the crates in the south-east end of the vehicle yard and destroy all of the targets that appear near the wreckage of the tanks you destroyed in the previous objective. 5) Destroy the vehicles and all targets at the last shooting-range. - Proceed north through the vehicle yard and destroy all of the targets that pop up along the way. I suggest changing your group to "hold fire" mode for safety reasons. It's possible to accidentally kill a friendly soldier, and you'll fail the mission if you do. Destroy the two tanks at the north end of the yard, then use the suppressive fire command on the large pile of targets that appear (F5 on your keyboard, or one of the middle commands on your menu bar). 6) Bring the group to the station and report the mission completion. - Your men will move to a gate on the east side of the firing range when objective number five is complete. Follow the street to the south and get the group to the commander standing by the car there. 7) Get into the train, if you want to move to the battlefront. Get into the truck, if you want to proceed with your training. - First, use the "Call Ally" command from your menu bar to take control of the two extra solders that run up to your group to join you. Then either get in the train or the truck to proceed (in theory, going to the train will lead you to the first actual mission and getting into the truck will take you to the Tank Training mission, but in reality, you're just going to wind up back on the mission selection screen either way). -------------------- Secondary Objectives -------------------- - None! ----- Units ----- 1 Soldier (Max Koehler) 5 Solders (Martin Erzberger, Tomas Reifsneider, Lenz Fuchs, Raimund Bader, and Konrad Lesser) start under AI control, but will come under your command later in the mission ----------- Walkthrough ----------- For the most part, you can just do what the narrator tells you to do, and you won't have any trouble getting through this mission. Start by heading north and swimming through the water to reach the gate on the other side. There's a hole under the west side of the fence near the gate that you can use to crawl under it (press the space bar to crawl). Once you're on the other side, click on the gate to unlock it. Head farther north and click on the giant ladder to crawl up to the firing range. Click on the fence to hop over it. Click on the crate in the south-west corner of the firing range to see what's inside. Take one of the SMGs and some ammo from it, then stand in the spot directly north of the crate where the flashing symbol appears. From here, use Direct Control with your soldier and hit the three targets that appear in his lane. You can fire at targets in your other soldiers' lanes too if they suck ass and take forever to hit them. NOTE: If you're having a hard time hitting the targets, rotate your camera so you can face west, which will give you a better view of them. Hold down the mouse wheel to rotate the camera. Once you're done with the SMG targets, grab a heavy machine gun and some ammo from the other crates in the firing range and take your position at the next flashing symbol. More targets will appear to the north (rotate your camera again if necessary), so blast them as well as any of your other soldiers' targets that they have trouble hitting. Once this set of targets is down, the narrator will instruct you to grab a rifle from nearby. Hold your tab key down to light up items that are on the ground. There are some rifles in the bushes near the wall, so hover over one of them and grab it (you're looking for a G-41 rifle). Use direct control to aim at the next wave of targets on the north side of the firing range once you've taken your position at the flashing symbol. If you hover over a target in direct control mode with a rifle, a red ring will slowly fill up around your crosshair. When the red ring is complete, your accuracy is way higher. Use that method to pick off all of the targets up here and then proceed to the east where there a few more crates on the ground by an observation platform. There's a Panzershrek and ammo in these crates. The narrator wants you to blow a hole in the brick wall near the fuel truck (despite the fact that there's a door nearby that you can unlock, you can't actually walk through it). Instead of simply destroying the wall, the narrator wants you to climb to the top of the observation platform and destroy the fuel truck under the assumption that the explosion will destroy the wall. Click on the top of the observation platform to get your soldier up there, then aim a Panzershrek rocket at the fuel truck (make sure the target light is on the truck before you fire, or your rocket is likely to hit the wall or tree in front of you). NOTE: Exercise caution with your units when you're throwing grenades. If you accidentally kill a friendly target, you'll fail the mission. Once the fuel truck blows up and opens a hole in the wall, follow your men through it and grab some anti-tank grenades from the crates south of the tank. You can equip these manually, or by clicking on the AT grenade icon on the menu bar, or by hitting the F2 key. Toss an anti-tank grenade at both of the tanks closest to the wall to complete this objective. Grab some anti-personnel grenades from the crate farther east from the crates that had the anti-tank grenades. Toss them at the targets that pop up near the wreckage of the two tanks you just destroyed. You can equip these manually, or by clicking on the AP grenade icon on the menu bar, or by hitting the F1 key. If you use direct control to throw them, keep in mind that they have a red ring that indicates their fuse (also known as "cooking" a grenade). This is a great tactic to use to stop enemies from diving for cover, and it also works great for getting enemies out of windows without having to get the grenade to land directly in the window. Anyway, once all of the targets are destroyed, follow your solders farther east and grab an SMG, some ammo, and some AT/AP grenades from the crates here. Do what the narrator says to form a group with your four soldiers, then proceed north through the firing range and knock down all of the targets that pop up. Destroy the two tanks at the north end of the yard, then use the suppressive fire command on the pile of targets that appear at the very north-eastern edge of the firing range (F5 on your keyboard or one of the middle icons on your menu bar). Your men will exit the firing range to the east automatically. Follow the road to the south and get close to the commander next to the car at the train station. Two more soldiers will come out to join you, so use the Call Ally command from your menu bar to make them join your unit. Now you have a choice of either getting into the train to proceed to the first mission (Nijmegen Bridge) or getting into the truck to proceed to the Tank Training mssion. In reality, either option will put you back on the mission selection screen, so it really doesn't matter which way you choose. ------- Endings ------- If you kill one of your men: "For your betrayal you've been sentenced for death by shooting. I can't explain what happened today, but we failed the trial. Months of painstaking studies and exhausting training were all for nothing and now the same goes for my career within the ranks of the Wehrmacht army..." If you complete the mission successfully (train or truck option): "You've perfectly completed the mission. As we expected, our group coped perfectly with the task. Battle training and good discipline distinguish true German soldiers from the youngsters we fight at the eastern front. However, we must admit that some people were just born to be warriors. I can find no other explanation for the fact that the Russian offensive is successful and are making us retreat from lands we conquered previously in the East. Hopefully, it is only a temporary success and once we've thrown the Allies' expeditionary forces down in the ocean, we'll take them on seriously." ============================================================================= | ------------------------- | | | | | | | 1.1B) Tank Training | | | | | | | ------------------------- | ============================================================================= "Today we are being transferred to Paderborn where they are to instruct us in handling the brand new machines of Wehrmacht. I guess skills of steering a tank and a course in tactical maneuvers for survival of an armored machine at the battlefield can be helpful." "I passed yesterday's exam with flying colours, like most of us dare-devils. And although we had an option to leave for the front straight away, we preferred to take a couple of lessons from famous aces at the Tank forces training centre at Paderborn. And really, who knows where the command's order will send us? Our knowledge of armoured machines may one day change the destiny of thousands of soldiers on the battlefields!" ------------------ Paderborn, Germany Primary Objectives 9 September 1944 ------------------ 1) Bring your tank to the shooting range for further tests. - It'll break down along the way. Have a soldier get out of it (click on one of the soldier icons along the bottom of your menu bar when you have the tank selected). Take control of the soldier and have him examine the contents of the tank (the E key on your keyboard). Inside is a repair kit, so take it. Use the middle gray tab on the far right side of your menu bar, then look for the wrench icon to find the Repair command. Use it on the damaged track of your tank, then have your soldier and the 101 crew get on your tank. Proceed down the road to the firing range. (If any of the 101 crew exit their tank in a spot that makes it so they can't get out, just leave them behind - you don't need them to finish the mission.) 2) Destroy the tank and the AFV, using the field gun. - There's a truck near your tank that has a field gun towed behind it. Drive it to the netting east of your tank where the objective symbol is, then use the third gray tab on the far right side of your menu bar to find the Unhitch button to detatch the field gun from the truck. Have two soldiers man the gun, then push it to the objective symbol and use it to destroy the targets. Your crew members should put it into fire mode on their own, but if not, it's another option found in the gray tabs on the far right side of your menu bar. 3) Destroy the vehicles and all targets at the shooting range. - Take your tank through the path to the firing range and use it to destroy all of the vehicles and personnel target markers. If you have trouble seeing any of them, remember that they show up on your map as red dots, and you can rotate your camera for better views by holding the mouse wheel down. 4) Bring your tank to the shooting range, if you want to go to the battlefront. Get into the car, if you want to proceed with your training. - Either option takes you back to the mission selection menu. -------------------- Secondary Objectives -------------------- - None! ----- Units ----- 1 Pz VI Konigstiger (with five crewmen - Lenz Fuchs, Martin Erzberger, Raimund Satlzmann, Paul Holz, Konrad Kuster) 4 Soldiers (the 101 crew once it's abandoned - Waldeman Farber, Veit Huber, Michael Neumann, Thomas Reifsnider) NOTE: It's possible that one or more of the 101 crew will be killed or trapped between the tank and the rocks when the cutscene occurs, but it won't affect the mission if it happens. ----------- Walkthrough ----------- Drive your tank down the road until the landslide damages it. (If any of the 101 crew exit their tank in a spot that makes it so they can't get out, just leave them behind - you don't need them to finish the mission.) Your crew will exit your tank automatically when it parks at the firing range. Have one of your soldiers grab an empty barrel near the front of your tank, then click on the fuel truck so the soldier will fill the barrel with fuel. Click on your tank once the barrel is full, and the soldier will put the fuel in your tank. Use the D key on your keyboard to have him put the barrel back on the ground when he's done. Next, take the solder over to the ammo truck and use the E key on your keyboard to check its inventory. Make a few trips back and forth between the ammo truck and your tank to load up on machine gun ammo, explosive shells, and armor piercing shells. You'll receive new orders shortly after this. Have your crew get in the truck that's towing a field gun near your tank. Drive over to the netting area east of the depot and use the Unhitch option in one of the gray tabs on the far right side of your menu bar to separate the field gun from the truck. Then have two soldiers man the field gun and push it to the objective symbol. Another option in your gray tabs will allow you to put the gun into firing mode. Load up some armor piercing shells and destroy the two vehicles in the firing range. Send your crew back to your tank when you're done. Drive into the firing range by crossing the water and following the path with the logs on it. Blast all of the vehicles and target markers out here, using your map indicators and rotating your camera with the mouse wheel if necessary. When you're done, either get car that drives up to your tank, or drive your tank back to the base. Either option will take you back to the mission selection screen. ------- Endings ------- If you kill a friendly unit, like by running over the commander's car with your tank: "For your betrayal you've been sentenced for death by shooting. Shit! I can't believe I failed to accomplish the simplest task. Now, they'll probably send me to the front as an infantry private and I won't even be able to dream of serving in Otto Skorzeny's commando unit..." If you get in the tank and drive back to the base at the end: "Your tank has successfully passed the tests. It will be sent to the battlefront. The 'King Tiger' had a striking effect on me - a personification of German power and perfection. For a moment, I felt regret that my fate was not to serve in the tank forces. Then again, they say every man has his trade. Not much time is left before our first combat flight. It will be a chance for us to prove that a group of well-trained commandos is as worthy as a tank company." If you get in the car with the commander at the end: "You've completed the test. The 'King Tiger' had a striking effect on me - a personification of German power and perfection. For a moment, I felt regret that my fate was not to serve in the tank forces. Then again, they say every man has his trade. Not much time is left before our first combat flight. It will be a chance for us to prove that a group of well-trained commandos is as worthy as a tank company." ============================================================================= | ------------------------- | | | | | | | 1.1C) Elite Training | | | | | | | ------------------------- | ============================================================================= [The first part of the mission text is an error, it's the same as the text for the Allied version of this mission.] "Our first real job is coming. In an hour we are leaving for France to say hello to the Huns. We'll meet the French Resistance fighters and together we'll make the Germans enjoy a happy night. Seems a trivial job in fact, but I am pretty excited..." "We were taught to shoot aiming by ear in the dark, to shoot our German automatic weapons, Soviet Degryarevs and American Thompsons, to drive passenger cars, trucks and tanks. We were sure they were about to send us to the Eastern front. What can be more important at the moment than protecting the borders of the Third Reich from the hordes of Bolsheviks? But the landing of the English and Americans in Normandy and the disaster of the 7th Army at Falaise has shaken my confidence. Still, we were kept guessing up till the very last second: East or West? By the end of the day, our destiny was decided: we go westwards, and so tonight... we fly out on a jingling U-52. Our mission is to establish contact with Lieutenant Colonel Gerhard Scherhorn's fighters that are forcing their way from the deep of the enemy's rear." ------------------ American Warehouses of the 2nd Armored Division Primary Objectives 16 September 1944 ------------------ 1) Your soldiers must survive. - If anyone dies (even if you kill them yourself without being detected by the enemy), you lose. 2) Clear the road from mines before the arrival of our vehicles. - Take the mines detector from the crate after knifing the soldier that's setting them and use it to detect the hidden mines near the crate (either equip the mine detector like a weapon or use the Detect Mines ability in one of the gray tabs on the far right side of your menu bar). Once they're visilbe, exit detection mode and click on each mine to disarm it. 3) Mine the road. - Send a soldier with 5 mines to the first flashing red objective symbol on the road near the base. When he's standing in the first flashing symbol, use the Lay Mines button from the gray tabs on the right side of your menu bar and target the second flashing red objective symbol. This will cause your soldier to start planting mines from the first symbol to the second, which is what the game wants you to do (it doesn't want you to just deploy them in a random pattern manually). 4) Destroy enemy tank using a dynamite. - That's right, "a dynamite". Anyhow, after the tank attacks your units and gets stuck on the road, have one of your soldiers use some dynamite from the same crate where you got the mine detector. Run up to the tank and use the Dynamite option from the gray tabs on the right side of your menu bar to place some right next to the tank, then run away as fast as possible. 5) Eliminate enemy machine-gunner using grenades. - The road will be littered with corpses after the soldiers breach the gate, so raid some of them for frag grenades. Take cover at the sandbags just inside the gate and cook a frag grenade a little before tossing it up at the machine gunner to take him out. 6) Arrange a firing point at the main gates. - Get both of your soldiers to man the gun at the flashing objective symbol, then drag it over to the second flashing objective symbol near the sandbags and deploy it there. A pile of troops will attach the gate, and you'll have to use the machine gun to fight them off. -------------------- Secondary Objectives -------------------- - None! ----- Units ----- 2 Soldiers (Ulf Brenner and Max Koehler) ----------- Walkthrough ----------- Stay prone in the bushes where you start until one of the two soldiers that were setting landmines walks away. Then equip one of your soldiers with his knife and carefully approach the remaining American and knife him in the back (you can also use the knife as a throwing knife to get him from long range if you want). When the soldier is down, raid the crate on the street for a mine detector, dynamite, and mines. Equip the mine detector and use its Detect Mines feature from the gray tabs on the right side of your menu bar to find the hidden mines near the crate. Once they're visible, exit mine detection mode and left click on each one of them to disarm them. You'll be warned that the spotlight caught you, so make a run for the shrubs again and hide until the American soldiers get tired of looking for you and return to the base. A truck will drive by the road where you need to re-plant the mines, so stay in the shrubs until it passes. When it's clear, send the soldier that has the mines to the flashing red objective symbol on the road. Use the Lay Mines option from the gray tabs on the right side of your menu bar, and then target the second red objective symbol. This will make the soldier go from the first symbol to the second symbol, deploying the mines in a line between the two (the game wants you to do it this way, not just to deploy them all over the place manually). When the game gives you credit for deploying the mines the way it wants them, run back to the shrubs and take cover. AI-controlled reinforcements will arrive, and an American tank will come in to attack them. It will get stuck on the road near your mines, and you'll be asked to destroy it with dynamite. If you didn't grab any from the mine detector crate earlier, go get some. Come up to the side of the tank and use the Dynamite option from the gray tabs on the right side of your menu bar to place some dynamite next to the tank, then retreat into the woods. When the tank is gone and the AI-controlled units have made their way into the base, raid the corpses around the street for some frag grenades. Enter the base and take cover at the sandbags, then cook a grenade up at the machine gunner to take him out. Man the machine gun on the ground at the next flashing objective marker with both of your soldiers, then drag it to the other flashing symbol and deploy it there. American troops will assault the gate you came through, and you'll have to kill them all to end the mission. For some reason direct control sucks ass on the machine gun, so you're probably better off letting your men control it themselves. ------- Endings ------- If you're spotted prior to mining the road: "You've failed the mission. The operation failed, Gerhard Scherhorn's fighters failed to get fuel and ammunition from the American depots. As a result, they had to leave the remaining machine, now totally useless, and to break out without them. Just a handful of people managed it..." If one of your men dies, even if you killed him yourself: "Your squad has been killed in action. The operation failed, Gerhard Scherhorn's fighters failed to get fuel and ammunition from the American depots. As a result, they had to leave the remaining machine, now totally useless, and to break out without them. Just a handful of people managed it..." If you complete the mission successfully: "Mission complete. The mission turned out to be quite simple. Gerhard Scherhorn's fighters made the grade and we also managed to do a good job. It seems to me we've proved that commandos trained under the supervision of Otto Skorzeny are very worthy of respect." ============================================================================= | ------------------------- | | | | | | | 1.11) Nijmegen Bridge | | | | | | | ------------------------- | ============================================================================= "We are to serve as a lure for the English meanwhile the commandos will be mining the bridge. I would not say the idea appeals to me but if Germany wants it from me I will fullfill my duty till my end..." "Operations for the demolition of the Nijmegen bridge were planned by command in a top secret environment. Our group got to know the details only after the Tommies strengthened protection at the site, using powerful searchlights and installing additional machine-gun nexts on the bridge. No wonder, an intact bridge enables the English to reinforce without an end their bridgehead across the River Waal with tanks and gunnery preparing for further advance towards Arnhem. Our mission is to give commandos from K-Unit a chance to put torpedo-mines beneath the bridge's pillar without being noticed and to blast it off." ------------------ Support of the "K"-Unit Commandos Primary Objectives 29 September 1944 ------------------ 1) Attack the British defenses on the left bank. Neutralize the guards and consolidate your positions. - The left bank is technically the south bank, but you get the idea. You basically just need to assault the British bunkers and wipe them out. Sieze the mounted anti-aircraft guns to inflict some heavy damage, and capture the Allied M20 APC for an easy (and mobile) method of taking care of things. 2) Hold the bridge. Let underwater swimmers plant mines. - Continue slaughtering the British on the south bank until they're all dead, then get ready to move north over the bridge. A huge British counter-attack will hit shortly after that, and you'll need to hold them off for a little while. 3) Take your positions on the right bank. - Eventually so much British stuff arrives that your soldiers decide to retreat to the north side of the river. Make sure everyone gets to the other side of the bridge before the timer runs out, or they'll be blown to bits when the charges detonate under the bridge. 4) Neutralize the enemy in the park. - Farther to the north, there's a park full of hedges. Move in and gun down the British soldiers as you make your way to the very northern edge of the map. There's a mortar crew up there - take it out to secure the park. 5) Force your way to the British maintenance base. - Move east towards the two mounted guns and deal with them. There're British soldiers everywhere (including in the windows of houses), so don't stand still for too long. Also, don't damage the guns - you'll want them intact later. 6) Hold your positions, until the M4A3 "Calliope" is repaired. - When you reach the maintenance base, your men will need a few minutes to get the Calliope running. Man the northern gun with your troops and get ready to hit the incoming tanks with armor-piercing shells. You can also make use of the crates between the two guns - one of them has several bazookas in it, and the other has rockets for them. 7) Destroy the barge using the captured tank. - Take the Calliope to the river once it's running. A British tank and some infantry will move between you and the barge, so use the Calliope's rockets to blast them from a distance. Once it's clear, move the Calliope to the ramp near the motorboats and hit the barge with some rockets. 8) Reach the boats and leave the place. - Immediately eject your crew from the Calliope and send them to the motorboat in the water. British reinforcements will reach your position shortly after you destroy the barge, so there's not much time to waste. -------------------- Secondary Objectives -------------------- - None! ----- Units ----- 3 Soldiers (Erhard Mehler, Tomas Volker, and Elmar Lichtman) You'll also have the aid of several AI-controlled soldiers. ----------- Walkthrough ----------- The south side of the bridge is your first target, and it's extremely heavily guarded. Begin by moving your soldiers westward underneath all of the buildings. Your goal is to approach the far western defenses from underneath. There's an Allied M20 APC here that's unmanned, and capturing it will make this mission way easier. There's also a mounted anti-aircraft gun here that can make things a lot easier if you can capture it intact. Whichever way you'd like to do it, just slaughter all of the British forces on this side of the bridge as fast as you can. Eventually the British will try to send some reinforcements over the bridge at you. Stop both of the troop crawlers at the southern edge of the bridge with your anti-aircraft gun (or a heavy machine gun if you didn't capture one of the anti-aircraft guns). Having those two vehicles disabled at the entrance of the bridge will provide excellent cover when you need to defend the bridge later. If there're any survivors left on the west side of the road, abandon your anti-aircraft gun and go deal with them with your regular weaponry. If you happen to see a British soldier with a bazooka, take it (and some rockets). You'll be glad you did when the British send a tank towards the bridge later. Anyway, once the south side of the bridge is clear, move onto the bridge and assault the two bunkers on the north side. As you're assaulting them, some motorboats will approach the bridge from the eastern side. The bridge is lined with machine gun bunkers, so have your soldier jump in one of them and stop the boats before they can reach the divers under the bridge. Shortly after you take control of the northern side of the bridge, the British will launch a massive counter-attack from the southern side. Your other two soldiers will automatically be brought to the crumbled buildings on the south side of the bridge, so I suggest you send them to the northern side immediately to keep them from getting killed in the chaos of the counter attack. Meanwhile, plant your third soldier in the wreckage of the two vehicles you should've disabled on the southern end of the bridge earlier. From here, you'll be able to slaughter tons of British soldiers to your left, right, or directly in front of you. If you run out of ammo, either raid some dead soldiers or take a heavy machine gun and its ammo from one of the disabled vehicles or one of the machine gun nests on the bridge. Eventually a tank will come down the road. If you found a bazooka earlier, wait until the tank gets close, then jump out from behind your cover and hit it with a rocket. If you don't have a bazooka, you'll have to use anti-tank grenades. They'll do the job, but it's a lot harder to hit a moving target with a grenade than it is with a rocket. Either way, shortly after the tank is destroyed, even more British units will arrive and you'll be told to retreat to the northern side of the bridge. Get over there before the countdown reaches zero. Some light forces will attack you on the northern side of the bridge once it blows up, so deal with them as you move towards the park in the northern part of the map. The park is crawling with British soldiers, including guys with bazookas and plenty of grenades. Quickly move your soldier all the way to the northern edge of the park and take out the mortar crew there, then mop up the rest of the British soldiers as they retreat to the east towards the two heavy guns mounted on the upper level of the square. These guns will be invaluable to you later, so try your hardest to eliminate their crews without actually harming the guns. Watch out for soldiers in the windows of nearby buildings, and slaughter everything on your way to the maintenance base. Clear out the British soldiers in there, too, then turn around and prepare to defend against another huge British counter-attack from the park. If your other soldiers weren't with you already, send them to the maintenance base for their own safety. Your AI controlled guys will take control of one of the mounted guns - follow their lead and take control of the other one. Make sure it's armed with armor piercing shells, then point it due west towards the end of the park. Wait until the first British tank is in range, then start firing at it until it's disabled. If it moves its barrel to take a shot at you, eject your soldier and run like hell - there's no reason to risk getting anyone killed when there're plenty of bazookas and rockets in the crates between the two mounted guns. Grab a bazooka and some rockets if you don't already have some, then enter the shrubs and take care of the tanks from down there. Eventually the British will retreat, and your Calliope will be ready. Send all of your men into it, then turn towards the river. A British tank and some infantry will be waiting between the maintenance base and the barge, so use the Calliope's rockets to pulverize them, then mop up any survivors with your machine gun. Get to the river and launch some rockets at the center of the barge, then immediately eject your men from the Calliope and send them to the motorboat on the river bank. You won't have much time before more British reinforcements catch up to you. [If you're wondering how to fire rockets, they're set up the same way as the various machine guns are. Click on the secondary weapon thing when you've got the Calliope selected, then choose the rockets instead of a machien gun.] ------- Endings ------- If you complete the mission successfully: "Uncork schnapps! Your group has brilliantly completed the mission. Bloody Tommies! They were guarding a bridge in godforsaken Nijmegen as if it was London's residence of their beloved Churchill! But for us the English buards would have surely discovered our colleagues from K-Unit and would have riddled them with machine-gun shots. Well, Bretschneider owes me a couple of schnapps bottles... No, I guess I'd rather prefer a crate of Brandy!" If you fail the mission because the Calliope is destroyed: "German underwater swimmers guided by Company Sergeant-Major Bretschneider did a flawless job and were able to approach the Nijmegen Bridge. Unfortunately, the demonstration group under the command of Tomas Volker failed to carry out their mission. Consequently, the mission failed. The English quickly reinforced their tank group on the right bank of the Waal and by the middle of October, as a result of a sudden advance of two reinforced brigades, they took possession of Arnhem. Thus, despite a one-month delay, they were finally able to carry out Operation Market Garden, leading to the collapse of the Third Reich in early January 1945..." If you fail the mission because your three soldiers are killed: "Your squad has died in action. German underwater swimmers guided by Company Sergeant-Major Bretschneider did a flawless job and were able to approach the Nijmegen Bridge. Thus, despite a one-month delay, they were finally able to carry out Operation Market Garden, leading to the collapse of the Third Reich in early January 1945..." ============================================================================= | ------------------------- | | | | | | | 1.12) Wiltz | | | | | | | ------------------------- | ============================================================================= "Everything has been wonderful so far: our tanks smashed Yankees' defense and the Americans flee for dear life along every road leading to the West. In moment like this I start to think no one can ever stop our iron avalanche." "At dawn on December 16th, by 6 a.m., my soldiers were fully ready for attack and had secretly taken up their original positions. Once the initial thunderous bombardment which opened Operation 'Watch on the Rhine' died off, our assault platoon, along with other units, could take the Americans by surprise. They suffered severe losses and are retreating in panic. Crossings over the Maas are awaiting us ahead and now a small town of Wiltz is standing in our way. Yankees' 110th Infantry Division hold a position their. Quite a time has passed since I last saw that inspiration on faces of my fellows. I am sure that now we will destroy the spine of the Allies army in Europe!" ------------------ Ardennes Offensive Primary Objectives 17 December 1944 ------------------ 1) Attention! We have to capture the central square and settle down on it. - First things first, deal with the tank and infantry group right in front of your starting position. Once they're under control, follow the German tank to the north (which is to your right if you haven't adjusted your screen yet). The square you're after is the area directly west (above) of the line of houses the tank drives past. Take out the mounted artillery piece in the square first, then pick off the American troops. 2) Hold the square until reinforcements arrive. - Americans will pour into the square from the west side in an attempt to push you back out. Grab a bazooka off of a dead soldier to deal with the tanks, or just use the artillery piece if you didn't destroy it earlier. 3) Dislodge the enemy off the last block. - You'll be given a ton of infantry and a Jadgtiger. Take the Jadgtiger to the block in the south-west (check the icon on your mission objective screen if you don't know which block I'm talking about) and destroy everything there, including the infantry, to finish the mission. -------------------- Secondary Objectives -------------------- - None! ----- Units ----- 4 Soldiers (Urban Lehrer, Oswin Schluter, Ulrich Cullen, and Gerhard Lichtman) You'll also have the aid of a slew of AI-controlled soldiers, and later in the mission, you'll gain control of the following: 1 Jadgtiger (with five crewmen - Erhard Lichtermann, Franz Kessler, Ralph Krieg, Reinhard Scherer, and Udo Kaiser) 11 Soldiers (Wilhelm Schlesinger, Peter Metzger, Emmerich Reiter, Stefan Breuer, Vinzenz Lederer, Marko Schlosser, Benjamin Mever, Kaspar Mehlmann, Peter Meltzer, Torsten Eisenhauer, Vinzenz Ledermann) ----------- Walkthrough ----------- Move your soldiers north to help your allies deal with the American roadblock, then follow the German tank to the north when it arrives (north will be to your right if you didn't adjust your camera yet). As the tank moves north, the area west of the row of houses is the square you're trying to capture. The primary threat is an artillery piece in one of the houses on the western edge. Ideally you'll run your men behind the house that the gun is in and kill the crew from behind so you can keep the gun intact, but if you don't feel like doing that, you can also just take it out with grenades from pretty much anywhere. With the artillery piece eliminated, concentrate on slaughtering the troops in and around the square. Eventually, they'll retreat to the church on the north side of the square. If the artillery piece is still intact, use it to blast one of the corners off of the church. If not, pick up a bazooka from one of the dead Americans and use it instead. Either way, wipe out the Americans that ran in the church, then prepare to defend against a counter-attack from the western side of the square. If you have more bazooka rockets, use them to deal with the American tanks. Otherwise, use the artillery piece if it's still operational or toss some anti-tank grenades at them, or just pray that your AI-controlled buddies manage to take them out on their own. After a while, the counter-attack will be halted, and you'll receive some heavy reinforcements (tons of soldiers and a Jadgtiger complete with its own repair kit). Use the Jadgtiger to help your allies topple the big house on the corner where the Americans are hiding, then move towards the well-defended block not far from your original starting position (check the location using the icon next to the objective on your objectives screen if you don't know where you're supposed to be). Use armor-piercing shells from the Jadgtiger to eliminate the American tanks in the area, and use high explosive shells to deal with the guns and troop concentrations. Once the Americans have been completely removed from the block, the mission will be over. ------- Endings ------- If you complete the mission successfully: "We caught them off their guard! The 110th Infantry Division has been defeated! The operation is beginning to feel like the good old days when Heinz Guderian broke through in his famous campaign in the exact same place and had France on its knees within two weeks. I wish we could repeat our success of 1940 at full scale..." If all of the men under your command die: "The American 110th Infantry Division showed much more resistance than the German troops previously expected. We failed to shatter them in the area of Wiltz. The attack was slowed down on the third day of the 'Watch on the Rhine' Operation and the German Army was unable to take any strategic advantages during its slow advance to Bastogne." ============================================================================= | ------------------------- | | | | | | | 1.13) Stoumont | | | | | | | ------------------------- | ============================================================================= "The first combats were successful for us. We broke through Yankees' defense without much problem. Supported by tanks we continue to head for the Northeast and soon we are to approach Stoumont." "Alongside Joachim Peiper's tank group, we've been quickly progressing forward, deep into the enemy's defences. The Americans look so surprised by the German offensive that they don't even really resist. Thus playing havoc and defeating American units on December 19 our group reaches Stoumont. We rely on quickness and surprise of our strike, which we hope will enable us to seize the town and to advance further towards Liege." ------------------ Ardennes Offensive Primary Objectives 19 December 1944 ------------------ 1) Storm through the block. - This particular block isn't even that well-defended, or at least not until a Sherman blasts its way in through a house. Use your bazooka to crush it, then finish off any survivors to clear the block. 2) Entrench on the square in front of the church. - All you really need to do is wipe out the Americans in the area, which will be a lot easier if you do the secondary objective and take command of the Panther. Follow the rest of the column with your Panther, then turn towards the church and finish off the American forces. Watch out for attacks from the rear, though. 3) Free the prisoned officers. - They're in the far north-western corner of the map. Take the Panther up there if you'd like, but it's not really necessary. Cut down the light American resistance up to the house where the prisoners are being held, and they'll come out of the house once you get close enough. 4) Officers must reach the evac point. - Return to your entrenched allies by the church, but be very careful that you don't get any of the escapees killed (you can still win if one dies, but you will lose if two die). Get them to the SDK behind the German tanks to make them evacuate the area. -------------------- Secondary Objectives -------------------- 1) Get into the command tank and head the attack on. - Once you clear the first block, you'll be told that the major was killed. The command tank is now unoccupied - head to the northern edge of the map and get your soldiers inside it. ----- Units ----- 3 Soldiers (Helger Gebauer, Tomas Volker, and Hans Huber) 1 Panther (will be added to your command later in the mission, no crew) 5 Soldiers (Max Koehler, Arnold Schroeder, Vinzenz Hoffmann, Ulf Kriea, and Karl Lederer will be under your control after you free them from captivity in the third objective) ----------- Walkthrough ----------- Move your three soldiers along the road with the rest of the German column and attack the block the Americans are occupying. It's not very well-defended, but have your bazooka guy ready - a Sherman will blast its way through one of the buildings eventually, and you'll want to be ready to take it out before it slaughters your men. Once the Sherman's destroyed and the block's clear, you'll be told that the major was killed, and that you need to take command of the assault. Head north to the edge of town and get your three soldiers into the empty Panther on the road, then follow the rest of your column up the street. The American guns and tanks in the area aren't much of an issue for your Panther, but watch out for attacks from the rear. Turn and make your way towards the square with the church, and be ready to take out a few more vehicles and some infantry. Once the Americans are gone, you'll be told that some officers are being held nearby. They're actually in a house in the very north-western corner of the map (use the icon next to this objective on your objectives screen if you can't find it). Take the Panther up there if it's still in working condition, or just leave it behind - it's not really necessary, and it usually gets destroyed from one hit by either of the two tanks that it's likely to encounter along the way. Continue on towards the house, and when you get close enough, the prisoners will exit on their own. Help them finish off their guards, then proceed back to the church where your allied-AI guys are holding a car for the prisoners. Some light American troops will try to keep you from making it down there, but there shouldn't be anything too heavy in your way. Your allied tanks will usually block the road and take care of the American tanks that come in from the edge of the map. Get all five of the prisoners down to the SDK behind the German tanks to end the mission. ------- Endings ------- If all of the soldiers under your control are killed: "Your group has failed. The battles at Stoumont swung from one side to the other, but eventually the Allies took over. American paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division, supported by a battalion of the 7th Tank Division, managed to maintain hold of the city. The German Tigers and Panthers kept running into their defences, with well-prepared bazooka crews and anti-tank guns. Even the crack commandos head by Tomas Volker couldn't help. This fight was their last..." If you let two of the rescued officers get killed: "The death of the captured officers is on your conscience. You can give give for lost your brilliant career in the ranks of the Werhmacht. This fight was their last..." If you complete the mission successfully: "Your group has acted perfectly! We were not too happy with the idea of fighting for Stoumont... After all, we were trained to capture fuel depots at the enemy's deep rear, but of course our glorious Wehrmacht lacks field forces! So instead of raiding the American's rear we were sent into the very thick of street-fighting! But we have to admit the Volksgrenadier militia would hardly have coped without our assistance... Anyway, Stoumont is seized and roads to Namur and Liege are open. Will our command make use of this chance?" ============================================================================= | ------------------------- | | | | | | | 1.14) Clerf | | | | | | | ------------------------- | ============================================================================= "The speed of our division's progress is good. But here we've got to stop. The waters of the river Clerf roll in front of us. This is the only obstacle to our tanks. The crossing lies to the West from us and we need to seize it as soon as possible." "On December 17th, we shot ahead with the 2nd Tank Division and now we're advancing westwards along the banks of the Clerf. The main supply centres are located in this area and the Americans have decided to avoid open fight and strengthen their positions. I can hardly blame them with it because they made the only correct decision. No one is likely to stop us in the open country, but an entrenched enemy can seriously hamper our attack, especially as our division's main forces are remaining behind due to poor roads. The vanguard infantry units including my group got an order to act aggressively. Our group's targets include destruction of American supply bases in this square and to weaken their defense positions..." ------------------ Ardennes Offensive Primary Objectives 17 December 1944 ------------------ 1) Destroy the North base. - North is misleading, but you get the idea (use the icon next to this objective on the objectives list if you don't know where the base is). Remove the Americans from the supply base, and be careful not to destroy the Sherman Firefly or the MK IV Churchill in the back of the base. 2) Destroy the post. - This will actually come before the first objective - you'll encounter a small outpost on the road towards the base. Clear out the Americans near it to complete this objective. 3) Clean the grade-crossing and destroy the bridge. - The crossing will be marked on your objectives list if you click on the icon next to it. The crossing is very well-defended, so you'll want to capture and repair the Firefly and Churchill if possible in the American depot. I suggest you take the road right in front of the depot to get to the tracks, then follow the tracks towards the crossing. Once you clear a path to the bridge, the paratroopers will arrive and plant dynamite on it. Defend them until the detonation happens. 4) Blow up the bridge using the aircraft bombs! - The dynamite that the paratroopers used will prove to be inadequate. When another train comes down the tracks, you'll need to stop it. If you time it right, you can destroy it while it's on the bridge, destroy the bridge in the process and causing this objective never to appear. If you stop the train before it reaches the bridge though, you'll get this objective. Take three aircraft bombs from the train and put them on the bridge to end the mission. -------------------- Secondary Objectives -------------------- 1) Prevent the passing of the column. - Shortly after you clear out the outpost, three American vehicles will come down the road from the depot and turn towards the train tracks. I suggest you have your soldiers standing on the road between the vehicles and the tracks, then gun down the jeep as soon as it turns the corner. Have an anti-tank grenade ready for the other vehicles, or just slaughter the drivers with a machine gun. 2) Destroy the American depots! - After you've captured and reloaded the Churchill or the Firefly, use one of them to run over the various buildings in the depot. Once you've caused enough damage to their supply piles, this objective will be complete. ----- Units ----- 3 Soldiers (Vinzenz Schreiner, Peter Knopf, and Georg Schuhmann) You'll also have the aid of three AI-controlled infantry 2 Soldiers (Ulrich Stump and Adolf Steinhauer) will be under your command once you complete the second main objective 5 Soldiers (Udo Kaiser, Hartmut Werner, Wolfram Hoffmann, Rene Werner, and Erhard Lichtermann) will be added to your command when the paratroopers blow the bridge ----------- Walkthrough ----------- Head to the right as soon as the mission starts and take up a defensive position on the road. A jeep will approach from below you, so hose it with your heavy machine gunner before it has a chance to fire back. Now turn your attention up the road to the small outpost there. Assault the soldiers behind the sandbags and above the outpost until you either kill them all or they retreat. Three American vehicles will come down the road from the direction of the supply base shortly after you finish off the Americans at the outpost. Get your men to the road between the American vehicles and the train tracks, and have your heavy machine gunner ready to take down the jeep as soon as it comes around the corner. The other two vehicles are a little harder to take out with machine gun fire, but you can do it if you pick off the drivers fast enough. I suggest you just toss an anti-tank grenade or two at them, though. With the vehicles destroyed, follow your AI-controlled companions up the road and stop at the crates to stock up on supplies. The American base is right in front of you, but it's easiest to attach from either the east or the west rather than hitting it head on. Be careful not to damage the MK IV Churchill or the Sherman Firefly in the back of the base. Once you've cleared out all of the enemies in the area and been given your next objective, you'll also receive control of two more soldiers. There's a repair kit on the ground near the MK IV Churchill with the broken treads, so use it to repair the Churchill (and the Firefly if you damaged it on accident). The truck at the entrance of the base has shells for the Firefly, so load it up. Split your men between the Churchill and the Firefly, then start crushing buildings and supply piles in the base to complete the second secondary objective. When you're ready to move on, head back towards the middle of the map where you stopped the trio of vehicles earlier in the mission. The best way to assault the bridge is from the road here. This way, you'll avoid a group of units that will intercept you if you try to head for the tracks and assault the bridge from there. The best strategy here is to leave one of your tanks on Free Fire mode so it can hose infantry for you while you use the second tank to focus on the enemy vehicles and field guns. Wipe out all of the enemy units near this railroad crossing, and your paratroopers will arrive. Of course, some American reinforcements will also arrive from the opposite direction of the paratroopers, so have your tanks ready to deal with even more vehicles and tons of bazookas. The same strategy as before is the best one here too - leave one tank on Free Fire mode so it will gun down infantry for you while you focus the other tank's attention on the enemy vehicles. Eventually the paratroopers will detonate some dynamite on the bridge, but it won't be very effective. You'll gain control of them, and then you'll be told to find another way to destroy the bridge. Defend the grade-crossing for a while, and another train will come through. Stop it with an anti-tank grenade, bazooka, or a shell from your tanks if they're still in working condition. If you manage to blow up the train while it's crossing the bridge, it can actually destroy the bridge in the process, which bypasses the last primary objective. If you stop the train prior to it reaching the bridge, you'll be given another primary objective. You'll need to take three aircraft bombs from one of the train's cargo cars and drop them on the bridge to finish the mission. ------- Endings ------- If you complete the mission successfully (with or without primary objective 4): "Day after day the command asks us to do impossible things... And every time, we manage to make it happen! How long are we expected to last like this?" If all of the soldiers under your command are killed or you let the train make it over the bridge: "It looks like the American soldiers, under the command of brave officials, have no plans to surrender. Their courage has been well rewarded. The Germans could not quickly cross the Clerf, which enabled the American command to bring up reserves and to keep their enemy away from the outskirts of Bastogne, never even letting them get within shelling distance." ============================================================================= | ------------------------- | | | | | | | 1.15) Marvie | | | | | | | ------------------------- | ============================================================================= "Our regiment is attacking Bastogne frontally through the village Marvie. This is the most responsible direction. The Yankees got plenty of anti-tank guns and bloody bazookas, what makes us a little nervous as we know victory won't be easy." "Our Tigers, Panthers, and our time-tested Pz.IV are advancing and breaking through all barriers. After the remains of the US 110th Infantry Division were captured, the command gathered forces to assault Bastogne, the main road conjunction in this region. But luck never leaves these goddamn Americans: they were in time to send their 101st Airborne Division to the city being just half a day ahead of us. The intelligence reported that the paratroopers are organizing defense, which we'll check up their endurance near the village of Marvie. We should also take into account that columns of Yankees' 10th Armored Division were seen not far from Bastogne." ------------------ Ardennes Offensive Primary Objectives 19 December 1944 ------------------ 1) Capture and hold the crossroads on the way to Bastogne. Don't let the enemy to send reinforcements. - Poorly translated objective, but you get the idea. Reach the crossroads to complete this objective, but make sure you're prepared first (check the walkthrough section for more information). 2) Intercept and destroy the collumn of enemy vehicles that is heading to Bastogne. We can't let it escape! - What's with these errors in the objectives...? Jeez. Anyway, two columns of vehicles (mostly tanks) will be coming over the bridge and trying to make it past the crossroads. Stop them any way you can - I personally suggest you rely on landmines and bazookas, your tanks won't really stand a chance. -------------------- Secondary Objectives -------------------- 1) Clean the village off the enemy. - Typo in it, but whatever. Slaughter the Americans that're entrenched in the houses to complete this objective. Note that the two houses closest to the field gun by the crossroads don't need to be cleared for this objective to be completed, which is good - otherwise you're likely to accidentally trigger an event when you try to attack them. 2) The enemy is sending reinforcements and ammunition to Bastogne. We have to destroy the column! - A small group of American units will attempt to make it past the crossroads. Slaughter them as fast as you can, and try to clog up the roads with the hulls of the vehicles if possible - it'll make it a lot easier to stop the tank columns later if you do. ----- Units ----- 4 Soldiers (Tobias Hellmann, Dirk Saltz, Jorg Schubert, and Johannes Saltzmann) 1 Panzer IV (and five crewmen - Adolf Steinhauer, Wilfried Eisenhauer, Peter Knopf, Georg Schuhmann, and Emmerich Schneider) 1 Pz V Panther (and five crewmen - Benjamin Koenig, Torsten Schafer, Vinzenz Schreiner, Kaspar Stahl, and Ulrich Studebaker) ----------- Walkthrough ----------- Move your Panther up the road and turn the corner just barely. There'll be a field gun on each side of the road, and they should be your first targets. Take out the one on the left first, then the one on the right, and while you're waiting between shots, send your four footsoldiers to the small pile of rocks near the bend in the road. American soldiers will try to fire bazooka shots at your Panther from right there, and if you get hit, it usually destroys or at least damages your tank. Once the two field guns are eliminated, back your Panther up and make use of its machine guns to start slaughtering the American troops in the area. A few vehicles will appear eventually, but only one of them is heavy enough to threaten your Panther. In fact, it's a huge threat to your Panther - you should have your bazooka soldier ready to take a shot at it when it shows up. Sit tight and defend the bend in the road until it's clear, then head to the big pile of crates (next to two cargo trucks) on the south side of the road (check your compass if you moved your screen around - south is the blue direction on the compass rose). Lots of good stuff in these crates and trucks, including some anti-tank mines. More importantly, though, move towards the building between you in the church and check the crates there. Mmmm, a flamethrower! This baby will make your life a lot easier. Grab it and the big tank thing (labled "balloon" if you hover over it), then equip the balloon and use it to siphon some fuel from one of the nearby trucks. Unequip the balloon and equip the actual flamethrower now. You don't have much range, but you don't really need it - get close to the church and light it up for a few seconds, then simply walk away and let it burn. You'll want to do the exact same thing with most of the buildings around the church, too, since most of them are crawling with American troops. Clear out this side of the road first, but once you reach the mortar crew, don't get any closer to the crossroads. Instead, head to the other side of the road and work on clearing out those buildings with your flamethrower. You'll notice that there's an American M26 Pershing tank in the corner. Those barrels and crates next to it are very valuable, so try to avoid blowing them up on accident. Once the area around the Pershing is under control, dump the crew from your Panzer IV and put them in the Pershing. Steal all of the leftover machine gun ammo from the Panzer IV (and maybe a few disabled vehicles), then take the 90mm shells from the crates next to the Pershing. Use some of the barrels to fuel it, and you're ready to go (if you blew up the barrels, just use the gas can from one of your tanks to siphon gas from damaged vehicles eslewhere on the map). If the first secondary objective is still incomplete, search this part of the city again for survivors (you shouldn't have to empty out the two buildings closest to the sandbag bunkers near the crossroads). Once you've managed to complete it, go ahead and move towards the crossroads, slaughtering the occupants of those two buildings as you go. Some American reinforcements will appear behind you, but there's not really anything too heavy. Use your Panther and the Pershing to stop them, but watch out for bazooka troops that come off of the American transports. If you stop all of the vehicles, the second secondary objective will be complete (some will come from the south-west road, too, so be prepared). NOTE: The barn in the north-west corner of the map by the ambulance is a treasure trove of delicious munitions, including more anti-tank mines. If you can sprint a soldier up there to raid the place, those mines will make the crossroads a lot easier to defend. Just be careful in the barn - there's an enemy in the corner of it waiting to surprise you, and you have to be careful not to destroy the crates in there. There's also body armor in the Dodge if you really want it. A timer will show up on the screen eventually to let you know how much time you have before American armored columns try to make it past the crossroads. Send your footsoldiers up to the crossroads with the anti-tank mines I mentioned earlier and arm them on the road leading towards the bridge, preferably as close to the crossroads as possible (but still in the narrow part of the road). The first few tanks should be disabled on the mines, so leave your Panther and Pershing way up by the exit on the west side of the screen that leads to Bastogne. They'll be able to take shots at the crossroads from there. Meanwhile, you'll be inflicting the majority of your damage with your bazooka guys. The Amerians had tons of rockets on them, so you should've had no problem at all finding ammo. Hide in the bushes near the crossroads, and as soon as something makes its way through, take a shot at it with a bazooka rocket (or several). The more tanks you can disable in the narrow spot right in front of the crossroads, the better. Why? Because a second group will arrive a few minutes after the first group, and it's a lot easier to stop them if they're having trouble getting through the debris field. Use the exact same tactics you used earlier to stop the second wave, though you might want to consider firing rockets (or throwing grenades if absolutely necessary) from the hill on the east side of the road. It's a little safer that way. ------- Endings ------- If all of the soldiers under your command are killed or you fail the second primary objective: "You've failed to fullfil the mission your group was charged with. Marvie, held by brave American paratroopers, was too difficult for the Germans to take. The German tank columns' offensive failed, ruining the German high command's hopes to capture Bastogne, the key junction in the Ardennes. It delayed German progress to such an extent that it would be impossible to reach the river Maas. Wehrmacht tank columns were quickly stopped in all directions. The 'Watch on the Rhine' operation ended without any serious damage to the Allies' plans." If you complete the mission successfully, even if you fail one or both of the secondary objectives: "You've carried out the mission perfectly. I'm scared to even imagine what could have happened if our attacks towards Marvie had failed... Considering how fast the Americans are strengthening their defences around Bastogne, we're risking unacceptable losses of tanks. Imagine an attack without tanks?!" ============================================================================= | ------------------------- | | | | | | | 1.16) Dinant | | | | | | | ------------------------- | ============================================================================= "No sooner had we bandaged our wounds than they are sending us to fight. Our regiment has turned to the West and is advancing towards Dinant along the Maas. There's one more intact bridge left which is our last hope to cross over to the left bank." "All our efforts were in vain, those darned Yanks bombed out the bridges in Namur! The attack not only slowed us down, but we also suffered severe casualties. We lost many good friends from our battalion. The mens' morale has been undermined. Nevertheless we need to take control of the nearest crossing over the Maas, now it is the bridge in Dinant. Only capturing the Dinant Bridge will give us a chance to get to Antwerp before January." ------------------ Ardennes Offensive Primary Objectives 25 December 1944 ------------------ 1) With the tanks, force your way to the other bank. - This will be the last objective you complete. Basically, you need to reach the other side of the bridge with the three tanks you're given near the end of the mission. (If you get one damaged or destroyed, you still need to send the surviving crew over the bridge to complete the objective.) 2) Find and kill the spotter. - He's in the middle of that trenchline right in front of your starting position. I suggest you move up the road to the right of the trench, disable the small tank with a bazooka shot, and use the crumpled hull as cover to take out the machine gun bunker. From there, move towards the small town, take out the guns there, and then attack the trench from the rear. 3) Find the detonator and prevent the enemy to destroy the bridge. - The building with the detonator will be marked for you with a red arrow (and you can also click on the icon next to the objective on your objectives screen to see it). Get your guys inside the building to complete this part of the mission. 4) Give attack call. - When you talk to the guy that tells you about the house with the detonator, he'll give one of your soldiers a radio (or if none of your soldiers have room for it in their inventory, he'll just drop it on the ground). Make sure you have this radio with you when you enter the detonator house. 5) Eliminate the guards at the bridge. - All you have to do for this objective is wipe out the defensive guns and troops around the bridge on the side that has the detonator house. -------------------- Secondary Objectives -------------------- 1) Capture or destroy the rocket-launchers. - This is the trickiest part of the mission if you don't want to get anyone killed. The rockets these things launch are devastating, and they'll be firing at you from close range once you get to the other side of the river. You'll want to attack them from underneath (the river side) with a soldier with some bazooka rounds. Take a shot at the one closer to the road with the bridge first, then pick off the second one (they'll try to escape towards the road with the bridge as soon as you threaten them). 2) Lay the fire of enemy mortars on their own defences. - Depending on when/if you destroy the guns in the village, this secondary objective may never appear. If it does, a soldier will appear on the map and tell you that he can redirect the enemy's artillery from the building near the trenches. Escort him there, then defend him until the timer runs out. 3) Protect your spotter. - Depending on when/if you destroy the guns in the village, this secondary objective may never appear. If it does, a soldier will appear on the map and tell you that he can redirect the enemy's artillery from the building near the trenches. Escort him there, then defend him until the timer runs out. ----- Units ----- 6 Soldiers (Ulrich Studebaker, Emmerich Schneider, Georg Schuhmann, Torsten Schenker, Adolf Steinhauer, and Benjamin Krauss) 1 Pz III (will be added later in the mission, comes with four crewmen - Emmerich Schreiber, Jorg Schuhmann, Georg Schulmann, and Torsten Schatz) 1 Pz IV (will be added later in the mission, comes with four crewmen - Benjamin Krieger, Vinzenz Schuhmann, Torsten Schlesinger, and Peter Koenig) 1 Pz V Panther (will be added later in the mission, comes with four crewmen - Vinzenz Schroeder, Benjamin Kramer, Adolf Sternberg, and Ulrich Stump) ----------- Walkthrough ----------- The Calliope rockets are devastating to everything, especially your foot soldiers. You'll want to time your assaults right after a series of rockets falls - run in, do some damage, and retreat to your starting position as fast as possible. Otherwise, the rockets are going to slaughter you before you even get close to the trenches. A small tank will come down the road from the right side shortly after the mission starts. If you can stop it on the road near the hill that leads up to the area behind the trenches, its hull will serve as great cover. Try to smack it with a bazooka rocket, but make sure you retreat before the Calliope rockets shred the remains. From the safety of the tank's hull, you should be able to hit the machine gun bunker on the hill that leads behind the trenches. Use a bazooka rocket on it, then toss a hand grenade in the hole if the guy manning the gun survived the rocket. After that, run like hell before a barrage of Calliope rockets come raining down on you. Return with your full group and assault the gun at the top of the hill next. The bushes and the bunker you just attacked should provide cover for you, so just jump behind them and toss a few grenades at the gun until you either disable it or kill the crew. Immediately turn your attention to the next gun on the other side of the trench, then move above the trench and slaughter everyone inside. The artillery spotter is near the middle. Kill him, and you won't have to worry about the Calliope rockets for a while. If you didn't already head into the village and destroy the field guns there, the second and third secondary objectives will kick in (although sometimes they seem to just arbitrarily never appear for some reason). A soldier will appear near where the spotter was in the trench, and he'll say that he can redirect the artillery fire to destroy the guns in the village. You'll need to escort him to the building near the trenches, then protect him during the countdown timer. A hoard of infantry will appear to stop you, so leave your entire team around the building and set them to Free Fire mode. If you complete the second and third secondary objectives, the artillery will pulverize the guns in the village. Otherwise, deal with them yourself if you haven't already. Continue up the road towards the river now, working your way through the small village between the trenches and the iced-over section of the river. You'll want to continuously check corpses for ammunition and supplies - there're tons of American soldiers on this map, and you'll need tons of ammo to deal with them. You'll also want to make sure you have at least one soldier with a bazooka and several rockets. You'll have a much easier time dealing with the two Calliopes if you do. When you're ready, cross the frozen section of the river above the small section of town you were just in. A small American tank will try to attack you from the other side of the river, but don't worry about it - the ice won't be able to support its weight, and it'll sink on its own. Stay near the edge of the map and use the farm houses on this side of the river as cover while you deal with the American soldiers in the area. Keep your eyes out for crates, too. Some of them have tons of good equipment that you might find useful. Keep in mind that some of them can be rather exposive, though, so don't try to use them as cover. Eventually a cutscene will show a soldier back down by the small village that you're supposed to go talk to. Send a soldier down there and get close to the guy to talk to him. He'll give you a radio, which you'll need later in the mission. If you don't have room to hold it in that soldier's inventory, the guy just drops it on the ground. Make absolutely sure you have it in the soldier's inventory, then send him back to join the rest of your group. Work your way closer to the middle of the town until you're in the square of buildings directly under the two Calliopes. Thoroughly clean the American troops out of the area without getting near the Calliopes, then rush to the gap between them with your bazooka soldier when it's clear. Take out the one closest to the road with the bridge first, then take out the second one (both of them will try to run that direction as soon as they're threatened, so you'll want to take them out as quickly as possible). With the Calliopes removed, you can continue towards the road with the bridge on it. Follow the road towards the bridge, clearing out the Americans along the way. To complete the fifth primary objective, make sure you take out the mounted guns on the sides of the road right next to the bridge. When you're ready, send your soldiers into the house with the flashing red indicator on it to deactivate the detonators. Assuming you've still got the radio you received earlier, you'll automatically complete the fourth primary objective. After that, you'll gain control of three tanks on the other side of the river. Move them towards the river, then turn towards the big houses between the bridge and your position. Make sure all three of them are set to Free Fire, then move towards the houses. Pound away at their defensive positions with high explosive shells, but keep your eyes peeled for bazooka troops. The area's crawling with them, and your Pz III and Pz IV won't be able to take hits from them. A cluster of American tanks will come from the road near the bridge, so have your Panther ready to fire armor piercing shells at them. The Pz IV and Pz III can help too, but make sure you keep one of them ready to defend against bazooka troops if necessary. When the tanks are all disabled or destroyed, move your tanks towards the bridge. The guns mounted on the sides of the road are no threat to you, but feel free to run them over if you'd like. Cross the bridge with the tanks to finish the mission. Keep in mind that even though a timer will appear to show how much time you have to cross the bridge, it can't be trusted. The bridge can explode when there's still 2 or 3 minutes on the timer for some reason. NOTE: In the event that one of your tanks gets damaged on the wrong side of the river and can't finish the trip, you'll need to dump its crew and run them to the other side to complete the first primary objective. ------- Endings ------- If all of the soldiers under your command are killed, or you fail to cross the bridge before it's destroyed: "Alas, the Wehrmacht didn't win laurels for the battle in Dinant. It was impossible for the exhausted German tank and infantry men to break through the robust defence lines established by the Americans and the English inside and around the city. The opposite bank of the Maas remained an unattainable dream for them..." If you complete the mission successfully, regardless of whether you fail any of the secondary objectives or not: "We're on the right bank of the Maas! Fantastic! What can I say? If only someone could give us a thousand litres of fuel for each working tank..." ============================================================================= | ------------------------- | | | | | | | 1.17) Rochefort | | | | | | | ------------------------- | ============================================================================= "We finally spoilt the Christmas to Americans, but there was a bitter disappointment with fuel. All our hopes lie with depots in Rochefort. According to the plan we are to get to the depots inside a truck-body pretending to be Americans." "What luck! My application was accepted and I was directed to the 150th Special Brigade under the command of the famous Skorzeny. We were given US military uniforms, Garand rifles and Thompsons. The brigade's mission is to pretend to be a retreating American unit, to wreak havoc and to sabotage in deep rear of the enemy. Our main target is American military fuel depots in Rochefort. We need to seize them fully intact for our tank men are literally praying for trophy fuel. For there's no other fuel! I am very nervous for now all hopes are put on our group and if we fail to cope all previous victories achieved with that trouble will loose any significance." ------------------ Operation on Fuel Capture Primary Objectives 27 December 1944 ------------------ 1) Capture the fuel base. - After your reinforcements arrive after you've detonated the radio mines, you'll have to fight most of what's left in the base. Try to pick as many of the soldiers off with your Greyhound as you can, and try to save as many of your soldiers as possible so you can use them to man vehicles later in the mission. Taking your forces away from the base's entrance and assaulting the base near the repair shed instead is a good strategy, as it allows you to stop the American vehicles there before they have a chance to attack you with them. 2) Conduct a recon on the base. - You'll need to familiarize yourself with the base before you can get the second set of objectives to appear. Basically, this objective will be complete once you've completed the rest of the initial objectives that tell you to find things around the base. 3) We need to find where the ammo's stored. We'll need it when we start our attack. - It's near your starting position, just on the other side of that long building. It's also swarming with soldiers, so you're better off scouting it from the other side of the trains where the tanks are. 4) Find out where the fuel trucks are parked. They'll provide our reinforcements with fuel. - The trucks are parked in the middle of the base, surrounded by a fence and a few buildings. 5) Find the armoured vehicles and artillery. - They're in the far corner of the base on the same side that you start on, just past the ammo pile by the train tracks. 6) Find and capture the radio station. - This is in the middle of the base at the far side opposite of where you entered. It's a two story building - use the stairs to get up to it. 7) Find out where the barracks are located. - The barracks is on the far side of the base opposite of the side where you started, across from the area where the trucks are stored. 8) Destroy the radio center staff unnoticed. - This isn't easy. There're five soldiers in the radio center, and you'll have to kill them all within two or three seconds to keep the alarm from going off. Stand just inside the doorway and use your handgun to pick off the two closest to the entrance, then the one in the middle as he goes for his gun, and then the other two. 9) Blow up radio mines with the help of the detonator. - First you'll need to place the mines (see secondary objective 2 below). Once they're in place and you have your disguised soldier in place by the fuel trucks to stop the drivers from taking them, use your other soldier to push the detonator switch near the truck you used to enter the base. 10) Protect the base. - The Allies will counter-attack from the corner with the armor and ammo storage area. If you captured the fuel truck successfully, you should receive a truck full of troops that will automatically man the defenses in the area. They can deal out some major damage, especially with the field guns. If you can get your remaining troops to put some ammo in the two abandoned American tanks, man them and let them defend along with the rest of the forces. Finally, raid the storage crates by your original starting position to get a bazooka and plenty of rockets, which you can use to deal with any of the major vehicles that get past the rest of your forces. -------------------- Secondary Objectives -------------------- 1) Capture and drive away the fuel truck to provide some fuel for the assault vehicles. - After you've placed the four radio mines (but before you've detonated them), you'll need to capture one of the fuel trucks in the middle of the map and move it into the arch near it. The tricky part is taking the truck without being seen, though. There are two fairly easy ways to do this, one of which is really cheap and stupid - use Direct Control with your soldier and bump into the two guards near the truck to "push" them into the open door nearby, which will stop them from seeing you when you take a truck. The far less stupid way of doing it is to wait for the patroling guard to walk away, then throw combat knives at the other two from behind. Either way, steal a truck and drive it under the archway. Make sure this is the last thing you do before you detonate the mines though, since you will not be able to get your soldier back out of the truck once he drives it into position at the archway. 2) Plant the radio-mines at the marked points. - One will have to go in the barracks - knock the cook out behind the barracks in a spot where he won't be seen, then use the crowbar on the ground to smack the metal thing near it. That will make the soldiers leave the barracks, allowing you to run in and place the mine. The next mine needs to be in the repair facility - steal the mechanic's tools to make him leave, then plant the mine and get out. The final two need to be placed near the entrance of the base, but they are far easier to plant than the first two. You don't actually have to complete this objective to finish the mission, but you do have to detonate all four mines regardless of where you place them. Note that if you choose not to detonate two mines at the entrance to the base, your reinforcements won't have much of a chance of surviving when they arrive. 3) Talk to train driver. - When the train arrives at the back of the base by the fuel storage units, the driver will be waiting in the small brick building by the train's entrance (where the officer is standing guard). Wait until the officer is looking away, then get in the building and talk to the train driver. Note that while it's possible to enter the lower door and talk to the driver, it's almost always going to get you seen. The better option is to hover over the building until you get the little "enter" icon. Your soldier will use the stairs to enter the second floor that way. 4) Drive away the train with fuel for our tanks. Without that fuel we'll be unable to hold the base. - After you've detonated the radio mines and cleared out most of the base, you can return to the train tracks and use the switch to change them, allowing the engineer to drive it away. ----- Units ----- 2 Soldiers (Torsten Schafer and Peter Hermann) Later in the mission, a hoard of soldiers and an M8 Greyhound will be added to your command. Even later in the mission, a truck full of soldiers will be added to your command. And finally, near the end of the mission, more troops and two heavy vehicles will be added to your command (if you get the train out of the base). ----------- Walkthrough ----------- NOTE: As infuriating as it is, you'll want to make sure your soldier walks everywhere in this mission until after the mines are detonated. Running seems to get you arbitrarily detected sometimes, and that's an instant way to fail. Being seen examining the contents of vehicles or crates tends to cause an instant failure too. Make sure your disguised soldier gets all three of the combat knives that your two soldiers started with. They'll be very useful later. Take your disguised soldier south through the middle of the base, but stop as soon as the game warns you about the officer standing near the small building by the train tracks. Get too close to an officer when they're looking your direction, and you'll lose instantly. Instead of messing with him, head to the corner of the base to find some tanks and artillery pieces. The ammo is also in that same general area. Once you've seen them both, head to the back wall of the base and cross behind the officer to reach the two-story building behind him, which is the radio station. You need to eliminate the five guards in the radio station without being detected, which isn't an easy task. Stand just inside the doorway and pull out your hand gun, then pick off the two guards closest to the entry. Get the guy in the middle next, then deal with the other two. If you're lucky, you should get away with it without causing any alarms to go off. Exit the radio station and get behind the building near where the officer is standing. NOTE: When you kill the guard sitting at the desk near the entrance of the radio station, he tends to fall out the window and alert the troops outside. It's best to wait until he stands up before you kill him. Your next stop is the barracks, which is on the opposite side of the base as the tanks. You'll have to avoid the snipers that're on top of the fuel storage bins, though, or you'll lose instantly. Head through the gap in the fence by the train tracks, then cross the tracks and head for the brick building with a guard and some vehicles in front of it. Continue past the barracks once you've seen it, and you'll find a repair shed and the area where they store fuel trucks. There's another officer between the repair shed and the trucks though, so you'll have to be careful. Once you've seen everything, you'll receive a new set of mission objectives. First, you'll need to place the radio mines in four spots, two of which require some trickery. Head behind the barracks and wait for the cook to head into the corner with the wood pile, then run up behind him and use a melee attack to knock him down. Nearby, you'll see a crowbar on the ground by a metal thing (use the feature to highlight items if you can't find it on your own). Equip the crowbar as a weapon and use it to smack the metal thing, which will bring the soldiers out of the barracks for their meal. Drop the crowbar and run to the entrance of the barracks. Once you're inside, get on the flashing red spot and deploy one of the mines there, then immediately exit the barracks. Head for the side entrance to the repair shed now. There's a mechanic in there that needs to be distracted, so wait until he walks away from his tool box near the vehicle, then immediately pick it up and put it inside the vehicle. Run to the flashing red spot where you're supposed to place the radio mine, then wait for the mechanic to wander off in search of his tools. Carefully place the mine in a spot that won't get you seen, then carefully exit the shed through the same spot you used to enter it. NOTE: If you're having trouble with planting the mine in the barracks or the repair bay, keep in mind that this secondary objective doesn't have to be done in order to finish the mission. All you have to do is detonate at least one mine - it doesn't matter where. I'd recommend still doing the two targets at the entrance to the base though, or your reinforcements won't have much of a chance when they arrive. (Also sometimes the game might not give you credit for primary objective 9 unless you detonate all four mines.) Sneak your way into the area with the fuel trucks now and work your way over to the tower thing with the flashing red indicator. A guard routinely walks in here on his patrol, so make sure you wait until he's started to walk away before you try to plant the mine in there. Once that one's placed, cross over to the other side of the base's entrance and plant the final one in the corner. Before you use your second soldier to set off the mines, get your disguised soldier back to the train area and enter the building near the officer to get the train driver to join your cause. Don't try to flip the tracks yet, though. Note that while it's possible to enter the lower door and talk to the driver, it's almost always going to get you seen. The better option is to hover over the building until you get the little "enter" icon. Your soldier will use the stairs to enter the second floor that way. Instead, return to where the fuel trucks are waiting. There're two guards standing near the trucks, and they'll raise the alarm if you try to get into the trucks. You'll need to eliminate them. Reinforcements should arrive, and the fuel truck will retreat past them. Once you have control of the reinforcements, back the vehicle away from the base and send your troops behind it, then use them to fend off the hoard of American troops. If you start running out of heavy machine gun ammo, you can use a soldier to raid the pile of corpses, the gun emplacements, or the vehicle that attacks. NOTE: A good way to drastically improve the odds of this initial encounter is to use the soldier that detonated the radio mines. One of the crates he's standing next to is loaded with frag grenades. Take a bunch of them, then after you detonate the mines, run him towards the battle and cook frag grenades towards the piles of enemy troops. When things have calmed down, send your forces to the entrance on the other side of the base near the repair shed. Elimate the soldiers here in the exact same manner, and you'll eventually complete the objective of securing the base. A truck full of soldiers should arrive and automatically man the defenses down by the tank and ammo storage areas in the far corner of the base. Follow them with your remaining forces, stopping to flip the switch on the train tracks on your way (which will allow the train to escape, completing that secondary objective). Send one soldier back to the truck where you originally started and raid the crates there for a bazooka and a bunch of rockets. Meanwhile, try to put some ammo in the two abandoned American tanks near the corner of the base, then man them and set them to fire at will so they can aid the rest of your forces in the defense of the base. The Americans will counter attack with vehicles, tanks, and hoards of infantry, but the machine gun nests and field guns that your reinforcements are manning should be able to dish out some serious damage. Try to take direct control of one of the field guns to make sure you can take out as many vehicles as possible, then use your tank and anti-tank gun reinforcements to take out as much stuff as you can. If necessary, send your bazooka soldier down there to deal with any vehicles that slip through your defenses. Once you've stopped the vehicles and most of the infantry, the battle will be over. ------- Endings ------- If you're spotted before detonating the mines in the base: "The operation failed. The scounts were exposted while fulfilling their mission. Despite the American uniforms and the German recon and sabotage group's rich combat experience, they were taken down by watchful American guards. The group failed because, after the attack against the La-Roche airfield, General Eisenhower gave a special order to strengthen the guard at all logistical installations. German tanks were left without fuel and couldn't advance any further from Dinant. Time was lost. The English and the Americans were able to establish defences on all roads leading to Brussels and Louvain. In January of 1945, the Allies launched a counter-offensive, eliminating the German advantage, then ended up with the Bulge at Ardennes." If you complete the mission successfully: "That's great! The base is ours now! Those cowards haven't been able to withstand our charge! I wonder what Volker's doing now? Also roaming the American's rear in search of fuel? If so, there's no doubt the Yanks are going to end up sharing a couple a thousand gallons of premium petrol with Volker! However, the stock we've already captured is enough to go on our offensive to Antwerp." If all of the soldiers under your command are killed: "All your soldiers have been killed! In January of 1945, the Allies launched a counter-offensive, eliminating the German advantage, then ended up with the Bulge at Ardennes." ============================================================================= | ------------------------- | | | | | | | 1.18) Louvain | | | | | | | ------------------------- | ============================================================================= "Outskirts of Louvain powdered with snow spread before us. Looks like the grand plan of field-marshal Model is starting to come true. After we seize the city nothing will prevent us from entering Antwerp the final target of our winter campaign..." "Thanks to fuel captured at the Allies' supply base in Rochefort and the successful seizure of Dinant Bridge, our tank forces did what had looked almost impossible just three weeks ago. We forced our way across the Maas. For two days we progressed to the North supported by tanks, virtually having no contact with the enemy. And although Brussels seems an easy prety now, our experienced commander Model decided to avoid battles for Belgian capital and to outflank if from the East. Probably, that maneuver will enable us to achieve the main goal of operation 'Watch on the Rhine', to capture the port of Antwerp at the earliest possible date. But when vanguards of our 2nd Tank Division reached the outskirts of Louvain the Allies launched counterattacks against our flanks..." ------------------ Ardennes Offensive Primary Objectives 16 January 1945 ------------------ 1) Seize Height 152 and destroy the enemy's gunnery positions there. - Major gun emplacements are heavily guarded by hoards of infantry and mounted guns. To make matters worse, you can't possibly get vehicles close enough to do significant damage due to a mine field and the fact that the heavy guns will pulverize you before you can even get close. You'll have to make hit and run missions over and over again with individual soldiers until you can free the place. Ideally, you'll attack from the water once you've cleared out the center. 2) Break through the enemy's defense in the center, capture the farm and retain the positions. - This is the easiest of the three objectives, so I suggest you start here. Rush your infantry towards the trench and then run as much stuff over as you can with your tanks until there's no where left for the enemy to hide. Your allied units will be a lot more effective that way. Just keep in mind that you can accidentally crush them with your tanks, too. 3) Knock out the enemy's defense at the left flank. - This is easiest when you do it last. Once you've wiped out the center and annihilated the artillery hill, you can get up to the water and then attack this area from above, which will make it a lot easier to deal with the entrenched tanks and field guns. 4) Destroy the enemy's gunnery at the opposite bank of the lake. - After completing the first three objectives, you'll be given this one, and the map will expand one way and shrink the opposite way (your forces will be moved accordingly). Your tanks won't be of any use here, so just leave them behind. Instead, use your infantry to make an assault on the guns in the same manner that you did before - starting at the lone gun off to the side, then entering the city from the corner of the map and sweeping your way across. Using the abandoned Allied field guns near your side of the water is the most effective way to deal with the enemy forces. Carefully wheel one of the guns to the fringe of the battle, then lob shells at whatever you can. If you're careful, you can virtually decimate the entire Allied force in this manner, including the guns you're trying to destroy. 5) Break through the last defense line of Allies and quell all resistance. - After completing the fourth objective and driving the Allies from the waterfront, you'll have to make one more assault on the city (the map will expand and contract again, and your forces will be moved accordingly). This time you'll be able to make use of your tanks though, which will speed this part up a little. I suggest starting by clearing out the center of the map, then using the center as a staging area to make assaults on the flanks. Make sure you keep your tanks far away from the city as long as you can though, or soldiers with rockets will shred you. If your mortar units are still intact, try to use them as effectively as possible to deal with a lot of the gun emplacements on the edges of the defended areas. -------------------- Secondary Objectives -------------------- - None! ----- Units ----- 4 Soldiers (Vinzenz Lesser, Torsten Eisenhower, Peter Nagel, Kaspar Krieger) 1 Pz VI Tiger (and 5 crewmen - Vinzenz Kuster, Benjamin Metzger, Torsten Eisen, Tomas Volker, and Peter Meltzer) 1 SdKfz 251/1 (and 5 crewmen - Georg Werner, Jorg Hartmann, Emmerich Pattkammer, Adolf Schatz) A seemingly endless stream of AI controlled units will join you throughout the mission, many of which will be turned over to your control. When the initial timer is still active, you will usually receive a new tank and some soldiers every time you get your current tank destroyed. After completing the first three objectives and the fourth objective, even more units will be added to your command, and even more AI-controlled units will flood the battlefield. ----------- Walkthrough ----------- This mission is going to take you a while, so don't count on being able to finish it in a single sitting unless you have an awful lot of time to dedicate to it. This mission is a little different from previous missions because of the way reinforcements arrive. There's a timer throughout each chunk of the mission, and while the timer is active, you'll get replacement units each time your current units are wiped out. So if your tank blows up, a new one will appear for you. If your infantry squad gets wiped out, a new one will appear for you. Once the timer on each chunk of the mission winds down though, you won't instantly lose - you'll just be royally screwed, because you'll have to try to finish the mission using whatever units you have when the timer stops. Knowing that you'll get a new tank every time one is destroyed makes things a lot easier though. You can be pretty careless with your units for the first three objectives and the last objective. Objective 4 will be pretty much infantry only, but you can be pretty careless with them during that part too. Just treat your mortar crews like gold, because they're extremely valuable (and won't be replaced). For the first timer, I recommend going for the center area first since it's the least defended. Charge in there and wipe out as many front line units as you can, then take tank after tank up there and run everything over. While using direct control, your tank will automatically spray machine gun ammo at enemy infantry if you leave it on free fire mode, so that's the way to go for most of this mission. Inevitably, a rocket guy will pulverize your tank, so when that happens, grab your new one and start running stuff over again until you take over the center area. Keep moving your new infantry units in there over and over again too, since they'll help wipe out enemy infantry. When you have control of the center, your next step should be to try to get behind the entrenched artillery vehicles on the hill (objective 1). They're a lot easier to kill this way, even with infantry (a well-cooked grenade can take out the crew without destroying the vehicle). Since you won't really be able to get a tank over here, you'll have to rush your infantry clusters in as many times as it takes to dislodge the guns and vehicles. Make sure you deal with the stuff closer to the water, too. When you've completed the first and second objectives, you should get an additional heavy tank to use for your assault on the next area. Take anything you have and head along the water to assault the last area from behind. The entrenched tanks and field guns are a lot easier to deal with that way. The tank crushing method still works great here too. The more of a distraction you can cause up here, the more effective your remaining AI friends will do on the other side. When you eventually wipe this area out, you'll be given objective 4, and the map will expand on one end and shrink on the other. The ice won't support your tanks, but they're pretty useless anyway considering how many heavy guns and bazooka troops are waiting for you in the city. I suggest beginning your assault by sending your infantry over the ice to the single artillery unit near the edge of the map. Try to do as much damage as you can with your mortar units, and take over the area around the big gun. If you can take control of it and it's still in working order, you can lob a few shells from it at whatever targets you feel like. In general though, you're better off destroying the gun and moving up to the next entrenchment on your way to the back side of the town. Otherwise allied reinforcements will just keep pouring in from the edge of the map right next to the gun, which is really annoying and hard to beat. Once you've punched through the defenses around that first gun and then cleared out the entrenchments around the next ones, you'll be able to make your way through the hedges on the back side of the row of houses. Use your mortar teams to wipe out countless soldiers out here, then rush infantry piles into the area to take care of anything else. Watch out for the gun that's inside one of the houses - it can be tough to get out of there. All you really have to do to finish objective 4 is destroy all of the guns with the red objective symbols on them, so once you've gotten the ones behind the row of houses, you can try using the rocket launcher vehicle that you received on the other side of the water to take care of the last gun or two rather than burning more time trying to take them out with infantry. With the guns destroyed and most of the Allied soldiers in the city eliminated, the map will again adjust itself, and you'll be given a new mission objective that will require you to make a final assault on the Allied defenses on the other side of the city. You'll be able to use your tanks this time though, which is helpful. If you still have your mortar soldiers as well, you can use them to pick off a bunch of the Allied soldiers on the fringes of their defenses. The same tank crushing method works great here again, since you'll be given a new tank every time your current one is destroyed (and new infantry every time they're killed). I suggest starting in the center, then taking care of the side with the windmill on it. If you can get behind the entrenched tanks, either with infantry or one of your own tanks, it will really help you make short work of them. The rest of the mission is just another grind. Crush as many buildings and guns as you can to deny the Allies the ability to use them or hide near them, and your AI controlled units will be a lot more effective. ------- Endings ------- If all of the soldiers under your command are killed and the timer has already ran out: "You have died in action... Victories achieved through the sweat and blood of German soldiers during operation 'Watch on the Rhine' turned out to be in vain. At Louvain, the Allies managed to grind down units of the 2nd German tank division. During the next three days, the Germans chaotically retreated back across the Maas, losing almost all armoured machines and gunnery. The operation which was originally so successful ended in the grave defeat of the Wehrmact." If you complete the mission successfully: "This cruel battle became a triumph for our Tigers and Panthers. We defeated a US tank division and two English brigades. Along with retaining the battlefield at Louvain, we were able to continue our offensive to Antwerp. On January 20th, 1945 the vanguard Tigers of the 2nd Tank Division entered the city seized with panic. We captured gorgeous trophies on the streets of Antwerp. The 21st Group of Armies headed by field-marshal Montgomery and located in Southern Holland was cut off from American forces that remained to the south of our armored forces wedge. We are to withdraw the secret stuffing of the radar after we wipe out the guard company. We are to get finished before the dawn. Otherwise the German artillery and Luftwaffe planes won't leave us any chance." "There's an unusual sense of excitement in our regiment: some major operation is being planned. It sounds like rumors that our troops 're soon gonna tread the roads of Europe are true. Well, that means we'll get to feel the French ground under our feet somewhat earlier. We've got an order to make a raid upon the Normandy. We'll land near an Air Defense radar on the coast to the east of Cherbourg, remove the guards and seize the site. After that we'll let the specialists dig into the bowels of the radar. This will save lives of many our pilots and paratroopers who are to land in Normandy, where they will fly aboard massive and very vulnerable gliders. It was explained to me that knowing the radar design features will make it possible to cause proper interferences to conceal our landing parties from the Huns." ------------------ Preparations for the "Overlord" Operation Primary Objectives 12 May 1944 ------------------ 1) The US Engineer must not die. - Pretty self-explanatory. Fred Cooper is the engineer, and if he dies, you fail. Keep him out of combat, and make sure you guard him when he's disabling the power station. 2) Eliminate the guards and escort the engineer to the radar. - After you've scouted the farm, use your men to slaughter the pile of guards by the radar station as quickly as possible. The engineer should move there on his own once all the guards are cleared out of the way. 3) We need to get rid of the guards quickly, gentlemen. No one should raise the alarm - we don't need guests here. - If any of the guards escape towards the farm, you'll fail this objective, but it doesn't always mean that you'll be unable to complete the mission. Also note that the AI-controlled Allied troops will attack the radar station as soon as you make an offensive move of any kind, whether it's by opening fire on something or even just deploying a landmine. Make sure you're ready to take care of the guards - the AI troops can't be trusted to do it on their own fast enough. 4) The US Engineer needs an escort to the power station. We need to provide for his safety while he's working. - After detonating the radar station, attack the farm and man the anti-aircraft gun there. Once most of the troops have been eliminated, move the engineer into the big building there and protect him while he works. Be prepared to deal with trucks full of troops coming from behind the farm, and also be ready to deal with a tank that sometimes shows up (your bazooka soldier will make short work of it). If you don't get the engineer into this building fast enough, you'll fail this objective, but failing it will not stop you from completing the mission. 5) We need to reach the coast. - Once the power station is destroyed, you'll need to retreat your remaining soldiers and the engineer back to the secondary beach landing (check your map by clicking on the binocular icon next to the objective if necessary). Take out the troops at the beach, then get everyone into the transport that arrives. -------------------- Secondary Objectives -------------------- 1) Investigate the farm. It looks too suspicious... - This should be your very first stop after starting the mission. Simply approach the farm and get close enough until your men comment on its contents. ----- Units ----- 6 Soldiers (Fred Cooper, Roger Bailey, Lesley Allen, Fred Cox, Chris Robinson, and Roger Stewart) A dozen AI-controlled soldiers will also aid you. You can also use the Call Ally command in your command bar to add some of these soldiers into your unit. ----------- Walkthrough ----------- Leave Fred Cooper (the engineer) at the beach, then take the rest of your men to the outskirts of the farm until they comment on the farm's contents, which will accomplish the secondary objective. Backtrack to the radar station now and open fire on the guards, wiping them out as fast as you can to ensure none of them are able to escape (if you crawl towards it from the road, you can toss a frag grenade in there to take care of most of the troops instantly). The engineer will come to the radar station and begin working on it as soon as all of the guards are eliminated. Meanwhile, send the rest of your men over to the farm and take control of the anti-aircraft gun there. Slaughter as many of the troops there as you can, but make sure you're prepared to deal with trucks full of troops coming from the other side of the farm, and possibly a tank at some point as well (your bazooka soldier can easily handle that from the safety of the trees). If you can secure the power station fast enough and get the engineer into it, you can actually destroy it before most of the heavy reinforcements arrive. If you don't get the power station destroyed fast enough, be ready to deal with the enemy reinforcements. As soon as the engineer destroys the power plant, there's no need to stick around and continue the fight. Retreat to the secondary beach lading zone, clear out the Germans around it, and get your men onto the ship that's waiting for you. NOTE: The truck that starts in the farm is loaded with landmines if you'd like to amuse yourself with them, but note that arming one usually counts as opening fire, which will make your AI soldiers attack the radar station. ------- Endings ------- If your engineer is killed and/or all soldiers under your control are killed: "Despite careful planning of the operation, the rangers were unable to provide England with any information about the new German radars. Therefore, the Flying Fortresses and Lancasters were"t equipped with the new devices to induce interferences and were unable to develop the tactics for overcoming the German Air Defense System. The Allies' bombers were suffering severe losses from the precise fire of the anti-aircraft artillery and night destroyers' attacks guided by the new German radars. Considering the fact that the success of landing in Europe was completely dependent upon the power and precision of air strikes, the Allies' commandment was forced to delay the implementation of the Operation Overlord for an uncertain period of time... The Allies' landing in France in 1944 never took place." If you complete the mission successfully, regardless of whether you completed the secondary objective or whether you failed to destroy the power station fast enough: "We did it! I swear by the recent notches on my Garand that we're the hottest guys in the American army! I'd like to believe that the information we've got about the German radar design will help our pilots in their air Crusade over Europe. If the bombardment operations are carried out as scheduled, our landing in France will be a matter of only a few weeks. I wish it was gonna start sooner!" ============================================================================= | ------------------------- | | | | | | | 1.22) Falaise | | | | | | | ------------------------- | ============================================================================= "The battles for Failaise have been lasting for two days. We've seized part of the town, while the Canadians are rounding it from the east. Our today's attack should be a decisive one and I hope luck won't leave us this day..." "The worst seems to have remained back in the bloody dunes of Normandy. The Krauts aren't putting up much strong resistance as yet. We've been moving east for the second week already with almost no losses. The Colonel said that if we hurry up, we'll be able to link up with the Canadians near Falaise, which will make the encirclement of twenty German divisions inevitable. But can we really hurry any more? We're on our march all day for long periods. But that's OK, we've come to Falaise already and we'll be able to have some rest after seizing the town. As of now, our unit is to check a couple of blocks and provide the approaching tanks with clear passage." ------------------ Operation "Tracktable" Primary Objectives 17 August 1944 ------------------ 1) Secure the first block. - The block right in front of your starting position is crawling with infantry units. Use your rifle soldier to pick off as many as you can from the hill, then use well-timed grenades to eliminate the soldiers that're manning the machine guns. Clear out the rest of the defenses in the middle of the block to secure it. 2) Destroy the "Pak-40" cannons. - There're two of these sitting on the other exit to the first block. If you can kill the crew of the far one with a grenade without damaging the gun, it'll be a huge asset to you later in the mission. If you can't, don't worry about it - just destroy them both with anti-tank grenades if you have to. 3) Knock out the Germans from the market square. - German forces are all over this area. If you managed to capture an intact Pak-40, this will be the easiest part of the mission since you'll be able to simply blast the crap out of almost everything with it. If you weren't able to snag a Pak-40, you'll have to raid the place with a soldier. Luckily, there's no shortage of rockets and grenades to be picked up from dead soldiers. When you've cleared everyone from the square and the surrounding area, the Germans should counter-attack. If they don't, it's probably because there's still a guy hiding under the manhole in the square. 4) Repel the counter-attack. - This will be easy if you captured the Pak-40, and even if you didn't, the counter-attack doesn't have a whole lot of power to it. Slaughter the infantry and use the Sherman to stop the train gun before it causes too much damage. 5) Destroy the "Tiger" tanks. - The nearby buildings provide great cover for taking out the two entrenched tanks. Simply toss anti-tank grenades from the safety of the buildings or get close and tag them in the back with a rocket. -------------------- Secondary Objectives -------------------- 1) Destroy the "Wirbelwind" anti-aircraft unit. - This is the mobile anti-aircraft vehicles near your starting position, surrounded by infantry defenses. The easiest way to deal with it is to distract it with one guy while you crawl another one close enough to hit the top of it with an anti-tank grenade. ----- Units ----- 6 Soldiers (Lawrence Sanchez, Justin Barnes, Donald Martin, Dennis Reed, Larry Turner, and Troy Taylor) A hoard of AI-controlled units will also aid you. Later in the mission, you'll gain control of a Sherman tank and its crew. ----------- Walkthrough ----------- Take control of your men and tell them to hold their fire, then send them all to a low spot on the hill to keep them safe. Grab your rifleman and use him to pick off as many Germans as you can, then toss grenades at the machine gun emplacements to clear them out. Some AI-Controlled soldiers should arrive to aid you after that, so find a machine gun and start clearing out the rest of the block. Once the soldiers in the middle of the block are eliminated along with most of the ones in the buildings, you'll be told to silence the Pak-40 guns in preparation for your tanks arriving. If at all possible, use a regular grenade to kill the crew of the far Pak-40 without damaging the gun. Capturing it intact will be a huge benefit for the rest of the mission. Don't try manning it until you've destroyed the other one though, or you risk having it blast you to pieces. Instead, toss grenades at the second one and mount an assault on the fortified building behind it. The anti-aircraft vehicle on the other side of that building is the Wirbelwind, which you'll need to empty out to complete the secondary objective. Once the building around it is fairly clear, use one soldier to distract it while you crawl a second soldier up close enough to toss an anti-tank grenade into the top of it. Deal with the rest of the Germans around it as fast as you can, then regroup and hunt for more grenades, ammo, and rockets if necessary. The assault on the market square is fairly straight-forward, especially if you managed to take that Pak-40 intact. Simply clear out all of the Germans in the area, including the guy that hides in the manhole. Once enough of it is clear, the Germans should counter-attack. The Pak-40 will again make this part a breeze if you have it, but otherwise, try to find some cover with a soldier armed with a heavy machine gun and just unload on them. The armored train with the huge gun should be dealt with by your Sherman, but it has a nasty habit of making shells just bounce off of it. Try to aim for the hole where the barrel comes out of it. When it moves out of the way, get a soldier with some rockets or anti-tank grenades to deal with the two entrenched Tiger tanks. The buildings in the area provide excellent cover, and the distraction caused by the approaching Canadian tanks will also help. Once both of the Tigers are disabled, the mission will be complete. NOTE: I've searched all over the place trying to find a repair kit somewhere in this mission to fix the broken tread on your Sherman, but I haven't had any luck. If you happen to know where one is, I'd love a screenshot of its location. ------- Endings ------- If you complete the mission successfully, with or without completing the secondary objective: "Falaise has been taken! That means that the German Seventh Army has no chance of escaping. Even if some infantry manages to force its way out of the trap, the Germans will have to leave all their machinery: trucks, tanks, and artillery in Falaise Pocket. Everyone says that after the German Army's surrender in Tunisia in May 1943 this is the greatest success of our arms. I'm proud of having my humble contribution to this victory." If all of the soldiers under your command are killed: "The results of the fierce battles of Falaise were not good for the Allies. The Wehrmacht 7th Army avoided being surrounded due to the German soldiers' furious counter-attacks. The Allies had no choice but to let their prey go. The enemy has retreated to the positions around Paris and consolidated there. It took two more months before the columns of the British, Americans, and French under General De Gaulle's command to get a chance to pass under the Triumphal Arch. It means that precious time has been lost, and the Allies are unable not only to speed up crossing the Rhine but even to get close to it..." ============================================================================= | ------------------------- | | | | | | | 1.23) Walcheren Isle | | | | | | | ------------------------- | ============================================================================= "The silhouette of Walcheren bristled up with guns is bringing some sad thoughts. The island's batteries have been preventing us from using Antwerp to supply our armies for more than a month. Now time has come to put an end to all this!" "Our regiment is gathering their belongings and cleaning up their weapons - at last the command decided to take Walcheren by assault. I saw pictures of the island taken from the air and to be honest I hardly liked it, as German pillboxes and trenches are scattered all over. The operation doesn't seem to be an easy stroll for us but what can scare the people who went through the Omaha beach landing more? I wonder where Gallagher is now. It was back in Saint-Lo that I got his last letter; I guess he'd be quite happy if he could get the better of the Germans at Walcheren." ------------------ Operation "Infatuate" Primary Objectives 1 November 1944 ------------------ 1) Disembark and consolidate your positions at the lowland. - Your AI-controlled units will move into the middle of the fight and take most of the fire for you, so just hide behind the buildings for now. When the German tank comes by though, jump out and toast it with an anti-tank grenade to help your allies out. 2) Suppress the resistance at lowlands and reach the passage to the second tier. - Your AI-controlled units will again do most of the work for you. Just follow them through the town, helping them deal with vehicles and gun emplacements when necessary. The biggest help you can be for them is near the entrance to the second tier, where the tank is sitting behind some trenches. Sneak a soldier around behind it and destroy it, then clear out the trenches with some grenades. Toss a grenade behind the machine gun next on the stairs to clear it out, and the AI troops will take care of the rest. 3) Provide the clear passage for the sappers so they can plant the explosives. - Your AI troops will pretty much do this on their own as they move through the city, but you can help them by eliminating vehicles and gun emplacements whenever you can. 4) Neutralize the pillbox WN36. - Your AI-controlled allies will do most of the work, but you can support them by taking out any machine gun nests and other defenses that they run into. 5) Neutralize the pillbox WN35. - Your AI-controlled allies will do most of the work, but you can support them by taking out any machine gun nests and other defenses that they run into. 6) Neutralize the pillbox WK7. - Your AI-controlled allies will do most of the work, but you can support them by taking out any machine gun nests and other defenses that they run into. 7) Neutralize the pillbox WN25. - Your AI-controlled allies will do most of the work, but you can support them by taking out any machine gun nests and other defenses that they run into. 8) Neutralize the pillbox WK03. - This is one of three located near the lighthouse. Raid the map for grenades and stand outside of the bunker compound's walls, lobbing them in to deal with the hoard of German troops inside. Once you've cleaned them out, dealing with the actual guns will be simple. 9) Neutralize the pillbox WC02. - This is one of three located near the lighthouse. Raid the map for grenades and stand outside of the bunker compound's walls, lobbing them in to deal with the hoard of German troops inside. Once you've cleaned them out, dealing with the actual guns will be simple. 10) Neutralize the pillbox WK05. - This is one of three located near the lighthouse. Raid the map for grenades and stand outside of the bunker compound's walls, lobbing them in to deal with the hoard of German troops inside. Once you've cleaned them out, dealing with the actual guns will be simple. -------------------- Secondary Objectives -------------------- - None! ----- Units ----- 4 Soldiers (Leonard White, Luis Brown, Kevin Crosby, and Steven Johnson) A slew of AI-controlled units will also aid you. ----------- Walkthrough ----------- This is another mission where your AI-controlled allies will do most of the work for you. Sit back and wait for them to secure the first rendezvous location at the lowlands, dealing with the tank when it arrives. As your forces move through the city, your goal should be to aid your AI allies by dealing with vehicles and gun emplacements whenever you encounter them, since they tend to be quite ineffective in dealing with them on their own. When you get near the stairway to the second tier, there will be an entrenched tank and some other stuff guarding it. Sneak a soldier behind this area and destroy the tank from the rear, then clear out the trenches and raid the nearby crates for an anti-tank grenade supply. Toss one up to the stairway to take out the machine gun nest there, then move up to the second tier. Help your AI allies clear out the soldiers in the open up here, then move behind the huge bunkers and aid them in their assault on them by tossing grenades at defending soldiers. As you proceed from bunker to bunker, keep your eyes peeled for crates that have molotovs in them - they'll be very useful later. Also try to collect as many grenades as you can, since they'll be necessary to clear out the defenses around the lighthouse later. When you reach the center of the first bunker area and the defenses seem too strong to risk your soldiers, you should find a building on the outskirts of the town that you can run through to get to the other side of the town's wall. If you crouch, you'll be able to toss grenades on the defending soldiers from the safety of this area, allowing your AI allies to continue moving. Once the fourth bunker in this area is dealt with, you'll be told to assault the area around the lighthouse so you can take out the remaining three guns there. Your AI troops should break a hole in the wall of the compound, but don't run into it until you've taken plenty of time to toss grenades over the walls to clear out as many of the Germans as you can. Don't hesitate to backtrack into previous parts of the map if you need more grenades (...which you will). The bunker closest to the edge of the map is the easiest one to get rid of, but be prepared to deal with a light vehicle that'll show up from the side of the screen when you start getting close to the gun. Once you've cleared out that first gun emplacement, raid the hoard of corpses to stock back up on grenades, then repeat the same process to deal with the other two guns. When you assault the one in the middle, a tank will show up, so be ready to nail it with an anti-tank grenade from the safety of the trench. ------- Endings ------- If all of the soldiers under your command are killed: "You heroically died in action. Failure of the operation to seize Walcheren had serious stretegic consequences. Large-calibre guns kept aiming at the outlet of the river Scheldt, making it impossible to use Antwerp until March of 1945, when the Germans ran out of ammunition. The Allies had to organise the delivery of all supplies from the remote French ports of Cherbourg and Le Havre. Because of this, their tank armadas experienced a constant shortage of fuel and ammunition and got stuck on the access routes to the Rhine. The Red Army was therefore able to occupy the whole German territory, instead of just occupying Berlin." If you complete the mission successfully: "You have perfectly completed the mission: At Walcheren the Germans fought like lions. After battles for the island, many of our guys are worthy of the Silver Star. But frankly, the German defenders of Walcheren have deserved the highest rewards and the best praise... And one more thing, I really hope that was the last island I'll ever assault in my whole life." ============================================================================= | ------------------------- | | | | | | | 1.24) Maastricht | | | | | | | ------------------------- | ============================================================================= "We will take part in a newly structured combat team to land at the right bank of the Vire, detect the location of the headquarters and capture secret documents on V-2 rockets. OK, we are ready to complete the task." "After our bombers razed the last launching pads for V-2 rockets in France to the ground, the Huns decided to change tactics. They have new mobile launching platforms to enable their praised 'wonder weapon' to move and fire to hard-to-reach places. This point became a new headache for our generals. But it seems that finally the luck turned to our favor - we got news that 'Special Artillery Command' of the Germans has evacuated to the rears at the right bank of the river Vire where they positioned their provisional headquarters. Capturing operational documents will enable us to find out time and routes of mobile platforms movements and to detect their procurement bases. It goes without saying that preventive strikes against the above objects could save lives of tens of thousands of Londoners. And who do you think can manage with the task better than my guys? The more so as they are personally interested in operation's success as many of them left wives and kids back in London. In brief there was no lack of volunteers - we have boarded the gliders and now we are heading to meet our destiny..." ------------------ Operation "Cobra" Primary Objectives 29 July 1944 ------------------ 1) Attack the town and get the documents at the headquarters. - Use the binocular icon next to this objective if you want to identify what part of the town the headquarters is in. When you've cleared the surrounding area of troops, walk a soldier into the headquarters, and he'll automatically start looking for the documents. Note that if the headquarters takes structural damage at any point in the mission prior to you stealing the documents, you'll fail. 2) Hold positions at the headquarters. - Some light vehicles and infantry will attack the headquarters after you send a soldier into it. Keep some of your men around it to make sure it doesn't take any damage, or you'll lose (make sure you don't accidentally damage it yourself). The trucks in the nearby storage area have tons of weapons to use if you need them, including piles of landmines if you want to set some in the streets to help stall vehicles. 3) Retreat to the isle and establish defenses. - After the timer expires when your soldier is looking for the documents, he'll exit the headquarters (well... a soldier exits the headquarters, but oddly it won't be the one you sent in there, and he definitely won't have the same equipment in his inventory). Your next objective is to retreat to the island to the north. As tempting as it might be to clear this island out before you raid the headquarters, don't. It will almost certainly trigger a glitch that will make you unable to complete the mission. 4) Capture or destroy the coast artillery on the isle. Provide safe arrival for the amphibian. - Simply slaughter the crews that're manning the artillery units along the island, and this will be complete. Don't worry about capturing them intact, you won't need them later. 5) Gentlemen, we're not gonna be able to escape with the river under fire like this. In order to survive, we need to stop the German artillery. - Two heavy artillery pieces will magically appear on the street directly east of the bridge between the amphibian's landing zone and your original starting position. Leave some soldiers (or your tank) down near your original starting position, and when this objective becomes active, quickly move up and silence the artillery units. 6) Take the documents to the amphibian and evac it. - As long as all of the other objectives are complete, simply drive the amphibian off the northern edge of the map. You don't need to put any of your other men it or anything first. Not even the guy that came out of the headquarters. -------------------- Secondary Objectives -------------------- 1) Germans are holding a farm near here. Before the second glider is landed, we have to neutralize them. - You'll need to clear out the German soldiers around the farm near your starting position as well as the well fortified house across the road from it. Make good use of grenades to take care of the machine gun, and be prepared to toss an antitank grenade or a bazooka rocket at the machine gun vehicle. The absolute easiest way to deal with the fortified houses (especially the big one on the other side of the road) is with your flamethrower troops. ----- Units ----- 8 Soldiers (Joe Foster, Howard Clark, Nick Holmes, Matthew Lewis, Chris Robinson, Paul Smith, Roger Stewart, and Lesley Phillips) Later in the mission, you'll gain control of the following: 5 Soldiers (Simon Harrison, Derek Parker, Humphrey Morgan, Philip Reid, and Nigel Jackson) 1 Willys MB (with three crewmen - Lee Jenkins, Michael Brown, and Colin Owen) Also note that the Willys is loaded with bazooka rockets and a bazooka. 1 MK VII Tetrarch (with three crewmen - Malcolm Foster, Garry Webb, and Philip White) 1 Soldier (Basil Cook) for some reason exits the headquarters instead of whichever soldier you send in there ----------- Walkthrough ----------- Your first objective is to clear out the farm area right next to your starting position. Make good use of grenades to clear out the German soldiers near the buildings, especially the one manning the mounted gun. Be prepared to deal with the machine gun vehicle too - a bazooka or an antitank grenade will take care of it easily. The large house across the street is very well defended, so it works best to attack it from the rear. If you torch it with a flamethrower, chances are pretty good that you'll wipe out everyone inside. The troops outside will be easy to pick off with weapons or more grenades. With the area cleared, reinforcements will arrive. Load your tank with extra heavy machine gun ammo from dead soldiers or empty vehicles, then head up the road slowly (make sure you remember to put a forth soldier into the tank). Have a soldier behind you with a bazooka (the jeep has plenty of rockets in it). A hoard of German soldiers will attack along with several light vehicles, so use the explosive shells and machine gun on your tank to slaughter as much as you can. Some of the vehicles might prove too strong for your tank to destroy, which is what the bazooka soldier is for. Meanwhile, when you get near the cross road, you'll note that there's a German self-propelled artillery piece in the tree line. You'll need to clear some soldiers out of the surrounding area, then creep a soldier close enough to the artillery to lob an antitank grenade or a rocket at it to destroy it (your tank's shells are too weak, they'll just bounce right off of it). Be aware that some of the Germans in the area will have flame throwers, which are especially deadly to anything. Sometimes stray flames can light grass and trees on fire, so watch where you're going. Your goal is to head up the west side of the map into the town, annihilating everything in your path on your. NOTE: When you reach the small bridge over the water with the house next to the water wheel, do yourself a favor and don't cross to the island for any reason. Doing so will almost certainly cause a glitch that will prevent you from completing the mission. Wait to go over to this island until after you've gotten the documents from the headquarters. When you reach the water, head east into the town and clear yourself a path all the way to the headquarters. Your flamethrowers will be very valuable again for clearing out garrisoned buildings, but be very careful you don't light the headquarters on fire on accident (you lose if it takes structural damage). When you've cleared out the troops from around the headquarters, send a soldier into it to start a five minute count down. You'll be told to defend the headquarters while the documents are located. Only a few light vehicles and some soldiers will attack, so position some men on both sides of the headquarters and be ready. The trucks to the north-east of the headquarters are loaded with rockets and land mines if you want to be extremely prepared (just remember to avoid damaging the headquarters). When the timer is up, a soldier will exit the headquarters. Take all of your men from around the headquarters and send them directly north into the water to cross over to the island. Wipe out the crews that are manning the artillery units along the northern edge of the island, and your amphibian will arrive. You'll be told to destroy some new heavy artillery units that just appeared on the map, so use some of your units that you left near your starting position and move towards the island. When you encounter the artillery units along the way, destroy them. Once the first five primary objectives are complete, drive the amphibian off the northern edge of the map to end the mission. You don't need to have all of your soldiers on the island first, and you don't even need to put the soldier that came out of the headquarters into the amphibian first. ------- Endings ------- If all of the soldiers under your command are killed: "The failure of the special operation to capture the German documents has deprived the Allies of crucial operational data... They also missed something far more important. As it was discovered after the end of the war, the so-called Commando 5, a unit of the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA), accompanied the Army Corps Headquarters as it travelled via Susanne-sur-Vire. Commando 5 was guarding the most confidential part of the Cherbourg submarine command centre's archives. If these documents had fallen into the hands of the Allies, they would've learnt a lot about the Flying Dutch submarine and its secret mission..." If the headquarters takes structural damage before you can extract the documents, whether the Germans caused the damage or you did it yourself: "Damn! The HQ building was destroyed before we got the documents! The failure of the special operation to capture the German documents has deprived the Allies of crucial operational data... If these documents had fallen into the hands of the Allies, they would've learnt a lot about the Flying Dutch submarine and its secret mission..." If you complete the mission successfully: "According to what Captain Parkinson of Defence Intelligence told me, the raid's results turned out to be more important than expected. Information about an enigmatic German submarine fell into the hands of our experts. The facts were so confidential that the experts could not even share them with Captain Parkinson! They said that such things are meant for the ears of General Eisenhower exclusively, if not for President Roosevelt himself..." ============================================================================= | ------------------------- | | | | | | | 1.25) Avranches | | | | | | | ------------------------- | ============================================================================= "We're still moving towards the south. Very little of German resistance here, but the great battle is still ahead. If we manage to capture the bridge, the German 7th Army will face its death." "After smashing the German defence at Saint-Lo, our armoured divisions are heading south at full speed to seize bridges across the rivers Seille and Selune. The unusual silence is amazing - it seems as though the Germans decided to flee all the way back to Berlin without any resistance. Our strike is aimed at the Huns' defences at Avranches. If we overwhelm their defences, our troops will pass through the bottleneck between the sea and the town of Morten and, turning eastwards, we'll be in a strong position to surround the German Seventh Army. The Germans are unlikely to retreat without a battle. All around me, men've been discussing the serenity of this morning as the calm before the storm." ------------------ Operation "Cobra" Primary Objectives 31 July 1944 ------------------ 1) Force your way through the defences and to the bridge. - You'll be told to make your way through the left side of the road to clear out the artillery units near the greenhouses. Once you're there, you can easily use those artillery units to utterly destroy the Germans in the trenches on the other side of the road, including the anti-tank guns they have. 2) Capture the bridge. - This will entail clearing all German resistance from around the other side of the bridge. While a careful approach across the bridge using one of your captured artillery pieces might seem like a good idea, it's actually suicidal because of the range and ridiculously high fire rate of enemy mortar crews on the other side. Instead, breach the water over by the small island with the tiny wooden bridge. Then you'll have to slog your way through the city until you can clear the other end of the big bridge. NOTE: If you feel like being a cheap bastard though, you can exploit the direct control mechanics to "drive" your men through the water from this bank to the tiny island, allowing you to take the captured mortar and captured howitzer over there, which makes things a breeze. -------------------- Secondary Objectives -------------------- 1) Neutralize the howitzers. - Shortly after the mission starts, you'll be told to head for the greenhouses and take care of the howitzers there. This is pretty straight-forward, but watch out for piles of enemy troops that tend to spawn seemingly out of nowhere sometimes. You can also do yourself a huge favor by sprinting forward with the first tank on the left right off the bat. A German with a rocket will magically appear in a shrub next to the first log pile the tank approaches, and if you're quick, you can stop him from destroying the tank. 2) Destroy the AT cannons. - This will be simply once you've captured the howitzers. Simply roll one a bit closer to the field guns and pulverize them with a shell from one of the howitzers. 3) Cut the Germans' escape routes. - Once you've routed the Germans from their gun positions, they'll attempt to flood back towards you and cross the water towards the tiny island. Cut them off and stop them from making it to the water to complete this objective. If you're having trouble stopping them fast enough, spend a little more time cleaning some of them out before you obliterate the anti-tank guns. That way there won't be as many survivors for you to have to stop. 4) Get to the other bank. - This will be complete as soon as you cross one of your player-controlled units to the other side of the river. 5) Neutralize the anti-aircraft gun on the island. - The tiny island has a mounted anti-aircraft gun on it. You can either annihilate it with a howitzer shell, or use the nearby mortar that you can also capture. 6) Fight your way to the fountain. - There's a big pile of crates with a machine gun nest on top of a fountain near where the tiny wooden bridge crosses the water. You'll need to destroy everything around it to complete this objective. 7) Assist soldiers that got across the river. - Some of your AI buddies will cross the river on their own in a ridiculous location, right in the middle of the buildings next to the tiny bridge you used to cross the water. Sweep in behind those buildings and help clear stuff out for them. ----- Units ----- 4 Soldiers (Jesse Lewis, Danny Mitchell, Fred Cooper, Francis Jackson) ----------- Walkthrough ----------- As soon as you have control of your men, run them up next to the first tank on your left and follow beside it. When it reaches the log pile, a German rocket soldier will appear out of thin air and try to destroy it. If you're fast, you can pick him off before he fires, which will allow this tank to continue moving forward for quite a while. Use this to your advantage and head along the edge of the map towards the greenhouses, carefully destroying pockets of German soldiers inside the buildings as you advance. When you reach the greenhouses where the artillery units are deployed, be very careful not to destroy them on accident. Instead, clear out the soldiers near them, and be prepared for more German soldiers to appear out of nowhere. When you're sure the area is quiet, move one of the howitzers closer to the road and use it to destroy the German anti-tank guns on the other side of the road. Be ready to block the grassy area between the greenhouses and the water next, as a wave of retreating Germans will attempt to get to the water. If any cross, you'll fail the third secondary objective. Keep in mind that there are spare shells for the howitzer in some of the crates near them, and you can also capture a mortar nearby. Both will make it very easy to take care of the German anti-aircraft gun on the tiny island in the river, so go ahead and do that. Next you'll have to cross the water, and the tiny island is the best choice for that. You can use the howitzer and the mortar to take care of some of the German defenses on the fringes of the bank. NOTE: If you feel like being a cheap bastard though, you can exploit the direct control mechanics to "drive" your men through the water from this bank to the tiny island, allowing you to take the captured mortar and captured howitzer over there, which makes things a breeze. Once you've crossed the river at the island, your next objective is a small German supply pile by a fountain. There's an entrenched tank and plenty of machine gun nests to worry about, so make sure you proceed carefully. Remember that sometimes the best way to deal with enemies inside buildings is to just destroy the buildings with anti-tank grenades. When you've cleared the fountain, some of your AI buddies will attempt to cross the river right in the middle of the garrisoned buildings. You'll be told to help them, so swing in behind those buildings and start tossing grenades like mad at anything and everything you see (or howitzer/mortar shells if you were a cheap bastard). Your goal is to proceed through the city and annihilate everything until you clear out all of the buildings and entrenched Germans on this side of the bridge. ------- Endings ------- If you complete the mission successfully, regardless of whether you fail the secondary objectives: "Congratulations, Sir! You've just proved that you can be entrusted with very important missions. Of course, it would have been naive to suggest that the Germans would retreat from the bridge across Selune without any resistance. But no one, including the most distinguished veterans who began back in Casablanca, could have expected the bloodshed we've seen. Well, the harder the combat, the sweeter the victory. I'm certain that we'll enter Paris in a matter of weeks now, not years." If all of the soldiers under your command are killed: "You've lost all your people. You've totally failed to capture the bridgehead. If we'd managed to retain the bridge across the rivers Seille and Selune in the region of Avranches, the American armoured divisions could have turned sharply to the East and surrounded the German 7th Army in Northern France. However, destiny had something else in mind. Hundreds of American tanks, self-propelled guns and armoured troop-carriers got stuck for ages on the Northern bank of the river Selune, where they faced aggressive flank counter-attacks by the German tank divisions. This above all was why operation Cobra failed and the Battle of France dragged on for several long months..." ============================================================================= | ------------------------- | | | | | | | 1.26) Saint-Lambert | | | | | | | ------------------------- | ============================================================================= "The commander says if we manage to force our way through Saint-Lambert it won't be long till we meet our guys. I wish it could be so but ruins of the town suggest some less optimistic thoughts." "After a successful operation at the enemy's rear in the northeast, we are making our way to the Third Army's positions, passing the sites of recent battles. At the moment, our guys are struggling to tighten up the Falaise Pocket and finish surrounding the Seventh Army. In order to overtake them, our commander decided to lead the group through Saint-Lambert. The little town has almost been wiped off the face of the Earth. It looks like the battles that took place here were no joke and the Huns gave the Canadian units a real good beating. Anyway, we're really looking forward to passing through the town because it's about time we met up with our guys. All the more so, since we've been trying to get to our positions for many days now and I promised old man Crosby to write him at least once a month." ------------------ Operation "Tracktable" Primary Objectives 19 August 1944 ------------------ 1) Hold on until reinforcements arrive. - Basically you have to keep the church intact through a series of waves of attacks from German infantry and tanks, the worst of which will come from the south-east corner of the map shortly after your AI buddies plant landmines on the road there. You can make the last defensive stand a hell of a lot easier by raiding the crates near the ambulance where you get the medkit. There are tons of landmines there that you can plant all over the south-east streets, which will slaughter a ton of the last attack wave before it even gets near the church. The jeep that your AI buddies show up in has more landmines in it too, and also bazooka rockets. 2) The church should not be destroyed. It won't hold too much gun hits. - No, I'm sure it won't hold too much gun hits... luckily, this objective comes in several stages. Failing it won't hurt too bad. Failing the more serious versions of it will make you lose the mission, though. 3) Check the trucks that wasn't destroyed. - When the game starts telling you to search for medkits, check the empty trucks on the south street. You really don't have to do much for this since they're all empty anyway, and this objective just goes away rather than getting check marked as complete. 4) Obtain medkits for the wounded. - There's an overturned ambulance in the north-west corner of the map, and the medkit will appear in it as soon as this objective becomes active. Do yourself a favor and wait to grab it until after you've grabbed all of the landmines from the crates next to the ambulance. Use them to mine the crap out of the south-east corner of the map, and you'll save yourself a ton of trouble later. 5) The church is damaged, don't let the guns fire at it. - This is a worse version of primary objective number two. It won't appear unless you allow the church to take a certain amount of damage. Even if you fail this version of this objective, you won't lose the mission. Instead, this version of the objective will be replaced with the next version. 6) The church is critically damaged. Just a few hits will mean certain death to the wounded. - Failing THIS version of the objective will cause you to lose though. If you manage to defend the church well enough though, this version will never appear at all. -------------------- Secondary Objectives -------------------- - None! ----- Units ----- 1 Soldier (Christian Gallaher) After delivering the medkit to the church: 2 Soldiers (Trevor Roberts and Francis Jackson) ----------- Walkthrough ----------- You're only going to have a single soldier at first, so your tactical options will be pretty straight forward. Don't mess around with hiding like the game keeps asking you to do. Instead, just blast the hell out of each German patrol that comes along. There are extra rockets and anti-tank grenades in crates near the church's entrance which will make your life a lot easier. The nearby entrenched tank hull has plenty of heavy machine gun ammo for you too. Eventually you'll be asked to raid the empty trucks on the south street to look for a medkit. Go ahead and do so, but it's not there anyway. Eventually the fourth primary objective will become active, at which point you can actually go to the north-west corner of the map and grab the medkit from the overturned ambulance there. Before you do that though, raid the crates next to the ambulance for landmines. As soon as you bring the medkit back to the church, you're going to trigger a series of events that leads up to a massive tank assault on the church from the south-east corner of the map. Instead of picking the medkit up right away, make a few trips back and forth from the crates to the south-east corner of the map and mine the crap out of that piece of the street. It will make defending against the final assault a breeze. When you're ready, grab the medkit from the ambulance and bring it to the church. Two more soldiers will be added to your command, and a jeep will show up with some AI-controlled allies. They'll put even more landmines down on the street to help, and you can find more inside the jeep too if you feel like planting them really fast. There are also more bazooka rockets in the jeep for you. The final wave of Germans is huge. If you placed your mine field effectively, it will wipe out a huge portion of them before they get anywhere near the church. To deal with the rest, the best plan is to leave two of your soldiers on free-fire mode near the entrenched tank that your AI buddy repaired. Give all of your available bazooka rockets to your third soldier and use him to take care of any tanks that manage to make it through your mine field. Eventually a German with a flamethrower will show up and start torching the church, so take care of him as fast as you can. Allied tanks should start showing up, and the Germans will start retreating. Keep taking out vehicles and soldiers until the game gives you credit for completing the mission. ------- Endings ------- If you complete the mission successfully, even if you let the church get damaged or fail to get credit for searching the undamaged trucks: "I heard that Old Man Crosby's regiment took part in the assault on Falaise. If that's the case, then there are now only a few kilometres separating us... And, more importantly, those kilometres are now completely controlled by us and the Canadians! It might be a good idea to talk some guy behind the wheel of a jeep into taking a quick ride into Falaise. We could go out on the lash with Crosby! Obviously, the Huns aren't thinking about booze right now... It was a total defeat! They're fleeing France like dogs! I'm guessing we'll enter Paris before the end of the month. And then we'll have quite a night out, I'm guessing!" If all of the soldiers under your command are killed: "The American army's advance from Avranches had little success and the Allies failed to surround the German Seventh army. After escaping the trap via a corridor in the region of Saint-Lambert, General Hausser's divisions retreated to the East, where they established new defence lines along the Seine and Marne rivers. Due to that, although Paris was freed in early September, it took long before the Allies could advance to the North and the Northeast to liberate Belgium. That enabled batteries of German V-2 rockets deployed in Belgium to start the massive shelling of London, causing the deaths of tens of thousands of people." ============================================================================= | ------------------------- | | | | | | | 1.27) Bastogne | | | | | | | ------------------------- | ============================================================================= "We have entrenched and now we are ready to confront the first German attacks. The guys keep cheering each other up with jokes but it looks like all of them are under highest possible strain. We need to retain Bastogne and we'll do it at all cost." "After a quick march on Vans from Reims, our 101st Airborne Division reached Bastogne last night and started to get entrenched after we got the order to defend the town at all costs. The men are in the worst mood, but everyone is ready to keep doing their duty till the end. There are Rumours of unstoppable German tanks approaching. However, our field engineers worked all night and we can now relax a bit. Some people are writing home, so I decided to write a couple of letters before the combat starts..." ------------------ Heroic Defence of Bastogne Primary Objectives 20 December 1944 ------------------ 1) No retreating! Hold your positions! - You have to defend this little statue area that your troops start in. Keep at least one soldier near it at all times. There are crates nearby loaded with equipment, so it should be a breeze to deal with the attacking Germans. Try to always keep one of your men ready with a rocket launcher to handle the vehicles that show up. 2) We need to fight the tank attack back with our artillery support. Don't take a step back! Don't give up your positions! - After you've successfully defended the statue area, your men will move down to another area on their own along with a bunch of AI-controlled troops. Defend this area just like you did for the statue area. There are crates all over the place, so make sure to stock up on ammo, grenades, and definitely rockets. Rockets will be critical to your success again, so make sure you have at least one soldier ready with a rocket launcher at all times to pick off enemy tanks. 3) Help the Allies fight back the attack on the glider. - When you've successfully defended the street from the tank attack, a glider will crash nearby. Head over to it and slaughter the Germans around it. Make good use of the machine gun nest in the trees near the tail of the glider, and you'll annihilate the Germans in no time. 4) Get to headquarters and warn the Major. - Once you've secured the glider, you'll need to follow an advancing column of Allied units to the headquarters in the city. 5) Don't let the German saboteurs destroy headquarters. - Oh snap, they're not actually Allied troops at all, they're Germans in disguise. Kill them all. Make sure you're not standing right in the middle of them all when you reach the headquarters, or it could turn ugly for your men very fast. Try to stay on one side of them and go prone so you can safely wipe them out before they do much damage to you. 6) Hold the positions at any cost. Reinforcements are on their way. - With the headquarters safe, some more men show up and join your command along with a truck loaded with equipment and a field gun. Your next goal is to defend the trenches near the headquarters building. Your men will deploy the field gun in a decent spot. Your objective should be to help them them by keeping a soldier ready with a rocket launcher, just like before. Heavy German tanks will attack, and you'll want to eliminate them as fast as possible. -------------------- Secondary Objectives -------------------- - None! ----- Units ----- 6 Soldiers (Russell Allen, Kenny Smith, Martin Turner, Fred Ward, Mathew Lewis, and Paul Smith) After you complete the fifth primary objective, the following will be added to your command: 3 Soldiers (Leonard White, Jeremy Hernadez, and Terry Morris) 1 GMC CCKW-353 (and 1 crewman, Danny Mitchell) 1 M5 76MM (and 2 crewman, Adam Allen and Leroy Collins) ----------- Walkthrough ----------- You'll need to defend the little statue area that you start in, so make sure you always keep at least one soldier near it. There are crates all over the place on this map that are loaded with rockets, anti-tank grenades, and all kinds of good stuff, so make sure you keep your men stocked with everything. Definitely make sure you keep one of your soldiers armed with an ample supply of rockets for the entire mission. Using rockets in quick hit and run attacks will be crucial to your success. When you've defended the little statue area, your men will automatically move to a new defensive position in a street near some anti-tank guns that your AI buddies are manning. Defend this area just like the statue area, and make sure you raid all the nearby crates again for even more anti-tank grenades and rockets. Keep your rocket soldiers handy again, and every time a German tank shows up, blast it immediately. When the German tank attack is stopped, a glider will crash nearby. Send your men over to defend it. There's a machine gun nest in the trees near the tail of the glider, and it will be a huge help if you man it. Either way, clear out all of the Germans around the glider to complete the third primary objective. You'll be told to make your way to headquarters, so go ahead and start moving towards the map indicator. Some AI-controlled Allied units will show up, and you'll be told to follow them. Do so, and you'll wind up at the headquarters. Try to stay on one side of them though - don't stand right in the middle. Why? Because they're actually Germans and disguise, and when their cover is blown, it gets ugly pretty fast. Try to stay prone on one side of their troops and help your AI friends annihilate them as fast as possible. Reinforcements will arrive, including an anti-tank gun. The men that are manning it will push it right behind one of the trenches by the headquarters, which is as good of a place as any, so let them use it there. Take the rest of your mean and deploy them nearby to defend the gun against infantry attacks. Make sure you remember to have the guy get out of the truck too so he can join the fight. Your main objective for the last defensive stand should be the same as the other times. Grab a soldier with a rocket launcher, keep him stocked with rockets, and make quick hit and run attacks on every tank that shows up. At some point, heavy artillery shells will start landing near the headquarters, and you'll be told to attack the other side of the houses to deal with it. Take a man or two up to the source of the shells and it the mobile artillery unit with a rocket or anti-tank grenade, then run back to your defenses. Sit here defending for a while longer, and a column of Allied tanks will show up and drive across the map in front of your defenses. You'll be told to go with them, so go ahead and have your men run beside them. Deal with any infantry that the tanks don't take out on their own, and use your rockets to deal with any German tanks that survive. When the Allied units make it to the other end of the map, the mission will end on its own. ------- Endings ------- If you fail to hold a position or all of the soldiers under your command are killed: "You failed to complete the task set by the command. Mission failed. The defeat of the American 101st Airborne Division in Bastogne had the direst consequences. The Germans seized the town and broke through our defences, headed towards the bridges across the Maas. They weren't stopped until they were near Brussels. The Allies paid a huge price for this in manpower losses, followed by three extra months of war." If you complete the mission successfully: "Who would have thought the Huns could still attack? We never doubted for a moment that we had beaten them down entirely. But, strike me dead, those devils were fierce and left us hanging by a thread... Luckily, the bad roads around Bastogne are more of a nuisance for the Huns than for us!" ============================================================================= | ------------------------- | | | | | | | 1.28) Omaha Beach | | | | | | | ------------------------- | ============================================================================= "Now the day has come that all our guys have long been waiting for. After our training we finally are heading for real war. According to the timeline at 6:30 am our company is to be among first troops to set foot on the land at Omaha beach coast..." "All the events of that day are deeply engraved in my memory. I can still see everything as if it happened yesterday. Five areas on the French territory which had been thoroughly investigated by the commandos were designated for America's landing troops. At dawn of June 6 our LCVP approached to bristled-up with pillboxes and braided with trenches area Omaha at Easy Green sector. At the same time our companions in arms should move into action at areas Utah, Gold, Juno and Sword. A foretaste of our first real combat filled my soul with joy but my heart was beating fast in alarm..." ------------------ Operation "Overlord" Primary Objectives 6 June 1944 ------------------ 1) Disembark and consolidate on the beach. - Rush your men directly towards the trench where the flashing objective symbol is waiting for you. Try to duck inside the trenches for cover and let your men slaughter as many of the Germans as possible, focusing on the machine gun emplacements if you can. You should be able to get credit for this objective pretty fast. 2) Hold the positions and protect sappers, until they destroy the obstacles. - Retreat your men from the trench and take cover at the water again. Lob grenades at anything you can reach from here, and just sit back and wait for your AI buddies to destroy the beach obstacles. Make ample use of your "call ally" button if necessary. This mission will be rough on your men, so you'll likely need replacements a few times. 3) Knock out the enemy off the town. - This will be the last thing you complete if you follow my advice. Basically once you make it off of the beach, you're going to have to clear a path through the town all the way to the north edge. 4) Repel German counter-attack. - Once you cross into the town, a German counter attack will appear on the north edge, including some tanks. You can just destroy it while you're clearing out the town. -------------------- Secondary Objectives -------------------- 1) Provide safety for the landing troops, until they reach the open area. - Some landing crafts will show up at some point after both sides of the tank obstacles are destroyed. Keep the beach as clean as you can, and large amounts of infantry will land along with a pair of Sherman tanks. These will be under your control, so try to make sure they stop on the beach as early as possible instead of suicidally driving into the trenches. ----- Units ----- 7 Soldiers (Kenneth Williams, Sean Thompson, Allen Thompson, Scott King, Justin Coleman, Thomas Barnes, and Walter Hayes) You can use the "call ally" button to add a hoard of AI units to your command throughout the mission. Tons of infantry will also be added to your command automatically during certain parts of the mission, along with some landing crafts and some tanks. ----------- Walkthrough ----------- This mission is a disaster from start to finish, so try not to get too frustrated with it. Begin by rushing your men straight for the landing zone where the flashing objective symbol is waiting for you (right in front of the trenches, where the exit heads north up towards the house). The safest place you can be while you're trying to get credit for the first primary objective is right here inside the trenches. Try to take out the machine guns inside the trenches along with as many Germans as you can. Once the game gives you credit for completing the first objective, retreat your men to the beach again and take up a defensive position behind the concrete obstacles. Lob grenades at the trenches from here and pick off as many German troops as you can. The goal is to defend the concrete obstacles while your AI friends destroy them. Don't forget about your "call ally" button during this mission. You can use it to take control of tons of the random AI troops on the beach, which will make your life a lot easier. Your main challenge while waiting for the AI guys to detonate the concrete obstacles is going to be lack of ammo and supplies. Try to raid as many corpses as you can without walking in front of too much German machine gun fire. Eventually each side of the beach will get its concrete obstacles destroyed, and reinforcements will arrive. You'll be told to take control of the town. This will not be an easy task since the area between the beach and the town is a horrid disaster of entrenched Germans. I suggest you take a pile of soldiers and focus on making a hole in the German line on the eastern side of the beach. There's a small spot in the barbed wire next to the moat where you can actually jump in and swim to the other side, bypassing most of the beach defenses in the process. You might want to just suicidally rush a group of guys straight for that spot and cross the water rather than trying to be careful. Once you're on the other side of the water, focus on protecting your survivors. Keep your men prone near the pile of crates, and take one soldier at a time on hit and run missions into the town. Remember to grab every grenade you can get your hands on, because you're going to need them. Blasting holes in buildings with anti-tank grenades or rockets is often the only way to effectively remove German soldiers from them. At some point, your presence inside the town will cause a German tank column to counter-attack the beach from the northern edge of the town. You can destroy this counter-attack along with your other town-raiding activities. Don't worry about letting some of it reach the beach. The secondary objective will light up eventually too, and large amounts of reinforcements will show up and land on the beach. Try to pay attention to this as carefully as you can, since there will be two Sherman tanks that you will get control of, and you can make great use of them if you stop them before they drive suicidally into the trenches and get hit from rockets from fifty directions. Once the reinforcements have arrived, continue your current endeavors and wipe out the town. Keep your eyes peeled for mortar units, and if you can capture one intact, use it to wipe out German infantry from a distance. If you can manage to get one of your Sherman tanks up here intact, you can use it to deal with the buildings. If not, use anti-tank grenades or rockets to blow holes in them to get the Germans out of them. You can also scrounge on the beach for a flamethrower if you don't already have one on one of your men. Once you've carved a nice clean path from the beach to the northern edge of the town, the remaining Germans will start to retreat, and you can ignore them until the mission ends. ------- Endings ------- If all of the soldiers under your command are killed: "Commander, you have lost all your soldiers! The landing in this sector turned out a failure for us... New waves of attackers kept rolling over the shore... But as they rolled over, they broke against the concrete of the German fortifications... Thousands, tens of thousands of soldiers fell dead along the coast line, remained hanging on barbed wire, perished under the tracks of the German tanks. Barrels of German machine guns became red-hot; some gun crews had to change guns up to seven times that day. Everyone was a hero that day, but only a few lived to tell of it. On the evening of June 6th, when defeat became obvious, General Eisenhower gave an order to those who survived to leave the coast of Normandy, spilled with blood, and to evacuate to the ships... Operation Overlord in this area ended with the complete defeat of the Allies' landing forces." If you complete the mission successfully: "The town is ours! Good job, men. After landing at Omaha, we struggled through Normandy, moving inland, meter by meter; farm by farm... We then managed to break through at Saint-Lo and raided the area en route to the bridge across the river Selune, near Avranches. We strangled the German Seventh Army at the Falaise Pocket and entered Paris... We then liberated Belgium and the South of Holland and by November, we ran into the Siegfried line... We held out in the Ardennes region and did not let the German tanks into Bastogne... In March 1945, we forced a crossing over the Rhine to finish off the last German divisions at Colmar... Indeed, this all took place, but it wasn't until that day: June 6th, 1944 on the dunes of Omaha beach, covered with blood, after all German counter strikes faded out, that we suddenly realised: we won the war. Now it's just a matter of time. Just time." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.30) Russian Campaign ============================================================================= | ------------------------- | | | | | | | 1.3A) Basic Training | | | | | | | ------------------------- | ============================================================================= - Here's where I stopped this time.
