||THE STORY SO FAR||
|+----------------+|
+------------------+
You're a marine, one of Earth's toughest, hardened in combat and trained for
action. Three years ago you assaulted a superior officer for ordering his
soldiers to fire upon civilians. He and his body cast were shipped to Pearl
Harbor, while you were transferred to Mars, home of the Union Aerospace
Corporation.

The UAC is a multi-planetary conglomerate with radioactive waste facilities on
Mars and its two moons, Phobos and Deimos. With no action for fifty million
miles, your day consisted of suckin' dust and watchin' restricted flicks in the
rec room.

For the last four years the military, UAC's biggest supplier, has used the
remote facilities on Phobos and Deimos to conduct various secret projects,
including research on inter-dimensional space travel. So far they have been able
to open gateways between Phobos and Deimos, throwing a few gadgets into one and
watching them come out the other. Recently however, the Gateways have grown
dangerously unstable. Military "volunteers" entering them have either
disappeared or been stricken with a strange form of insanity - babbling
vulgarities, bludgeoning anything that breathes, and finally suffering an
untimely death of full-body explosion. Matching heads with torsos to send home
to the folks became a full-time job. Latest military reports state that the
research is suffering a small set-back, but everything is under control.

A few hours ago, Mars received a garbled message from Phobos. "We require
immediate military support. Something fraggin' evil is coming out of the
Gateways! Computer systems have gone berserk!" The rest was incoherent. Soon
afterwards, Deimos simply vanished from the sky. Since then, attempts to
establish contact with either moon have been unsuccessful.

You and your buddies, the only combat troop for fifty million miles were sent up
pronto to Phobos. You were ordered to secure the perimeter of the base while the
rest of the team went inside. For several hours, your radio picked up the sounds
of combat: guns firing, men yelling orders, screams, bones cracking, then
finally, silence. Seems your buddies are dead.

IT'S UP TO YOU
Things aren't looking too good. You'll never navigate off the planet on your
own. Plus, all the heavy weapons have been taken by the assault team leaving
you with only a pistol. If only you could get your hands around a plasma rifle
or even a shotgun you could take a few down on your way out. Whatever killed
your buddies deserves a couple of pellets in the forehead. Securing your helmet,
you exit the landing pod. Hopefully you can find more substantial firepower
somewhere within the station.

As you walk through the main entrance of the base, you hear animal-like growls
echoing throughout the distant corridors. They know you're here. There's no
turning back now.

||WEAPONS||
|+-------+|
+---------+
+------------------+
|3.1. MELEE WEAPONS|
+------------------+
Melee weapons have an advantage and a disadvantage: they don't need any ammo,
but they are weaker than any other kind of gun. Also, they don't have any range.

-3.1.1. CHAINSAW-
When you walk across the chainsaw it replaces your fist as the current weapon.

As Doom 95's help file doesn't explain how does the chainsaw work, I'm forced to
do that. The Chainsaw is a rather good melee weapon which "fires" continuously.
It does good damage, but it has little or no range. Can be a good alternative
when you are low on ammo. Great against Demons, Spectres and Cacodemons, as this
thing will keep them from attacking.

-3.1.2. FIST-
Your iron-clad knuckles are a little better than nothing.

Really, it's not a fist. They're brass knuckles. Are they powerful? Not at all,
unless you pick up the Berserk power-up. They can be used early in the game to
not waste ammo in easy enemies. When you have the Chainsaw, they become useless.
You can't even select them unless you pick up the Berserk.
+------------------+
|3.3. SHELL WEAPONS|
+------------------+
The only shell gun available in-game is the Shotgun, firing 5 shots. Shell guns
are very powerful at close range, but weak and not accurate at all at long
distances. Sometimes it can kill several enemies in one shot.

-3.3.1. SHOTGUN-
Shotguns can deliver a heavy punch at close range and a generous pelting from a
distance.

The Shotgun is a nice gun which fires 5 shots when triggered, doing good damage
to close targets. However, it's inaccurate when trying to hurt targets at long
distances. It uses shells instead of bullets, which have less availability than
pistol or chaingun ammo.
+-------------------+
|3.4. ROCKET WEAPONS|
+-------------------+
There is only one rocket weapon in the whole game: the rocket launcher. Rockets
can damage everything in a big radius, even you. Yes, that's right: Don't fire
a rocket at something close to you. Good to control masses.

-3.4.1. ROCKET LAUNCHER-
Rocket Launchers deliver an explosive rocket that can turn several baddies
inside-out.

The Rocket Launcher is a very nice weapon, and a very dangerous one too both to
your foes and you. It launches a standard rocket. It can kill several weak
enemies with one rocket, but can damage you if it explodes close to your
position.

NOTE: Strangely, the Marine wields the Rocket Launcher in his hand, not in his
shoulder as seen in reality.
+-------------------+
|3.5. PLASMA WEAPONS|
+-------------------+
Plasma weapons are the best ones in the game. Unfortunately, ammunition isn't
very plentiful, and you can't waste it. Beware when using the BFG9000, as a full
backpack will only last for 15 shots.

-3.5.1. BFG9000-
BFG 9000s are the prize of the military's arsenal. Great for clearing the room
of those unwelcome guests. Shoot it and see for yourself.

The BFG9000 (Big F***ing Gun) is as powerful as complex. It launches a big green
plasma ball which does an immense amount of damage and releases 40 invisible
rays when it hits something. These rays hit everything in a radius of 1000
pixels. It can completely clear a room of weak enemies, but there is a problem:
if there's an enemy next to the ball but you can't see it (i.e. behind a wall or
out of sight) that enemy won't be hurt. Also, it uses 40 plasma cells when shot,
so you'll have to decide well who will receive that plasma ball. However, it
doesn't hinder the gun very much, and it will always be the king of all guns.

NOTE: This BFG9000 wasn't the one that was going to be put into the game. A
former BFG9000 released 40 medium red and green plasma balls with one shot. It
was replaced with the actual one because, according to John Romero, it "looked
like Christmas" and also slowed down the game significantly due to the large
number of sprites in the screen.

-3.5.2. PLASMA RIFLE-
Plasma Rifles shoot multiple rounds of plasma energy - frying some demon butt!

The Plasma rifle is a small version of the BFG9000. It shoots blue plasma balls
at a high speed and can do rather decent damage, but has no splash.
Unfortunately, the rapid firing and the size of the plasma can block your view
when shooting against something that's near you, but that's not a very big
problem. Overall, a pretty good gun.

|+-------+|
||4     4||
||ENEMIES||
|+-------+|
+---------+
+------------+
|4.1. ZOMBIES|
+------------+
Zombies are enemies who were humans and your partners in the past, but the
invasion has turned them into mindless hungry creatures. Zombies drop ammunition
when killed and can start an infighting with any enemy, even other zombies.

-4.1.1. FORMER HUMAN-
Just a few days ago, you were probably swapping war stories with one of these
guys. Now it's time to swap some lead upside their head.

Aspect: Soldiers in beige uniform with short green hair.
Hit Points: 20.

Former Humans are marines like you but turned into zombies. They aren't strong
or powerful, but can get you into trouble if you find them in large groups, what
sometimes happens. They attack you with a pistol. Not someone to worry about.

-4.1.2. FORMER HUMAN SERGEANT-
Same as the Former Humans, but much meaner, and tougher. These walking
shotguns provide you with a few extra holes if you're not careful!

Aspect: Shotgun-wielding bald soldiers in black uniform.
Hit Points: 30.

Sergeants are "updated versions" of Former Humans. They are more resistant
(although not that much) and wield a shotgun instead of a pistol. It's also one
of the most common enemies throughout the game. They can give you some trouble,
specially in groups.
+------------------------+
|4.2. CREATURES FROM HELL|
+------------------------+
These creatures are straight from the deepest abysses of Hell. They often have
two types of attacks, one being the launch of a projectile and the other is a
melee attack of some kind. The only exceptions are Demons, Spectres and Lost
Souls, which don't have a ranged attack.

-4.2.1. BARON OF HELL-
Tough as a dump truck and nearly as big, these goliaths are the worst thing on
two legs since Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Aspect: Minotaur-like thing with horns and goat legs.
Hit Points: 1000.

They will give you a nasty surprise at the last level of Knee-Deep in the Dead,
where two of them (the Bruiser Brothers) will suddenly come out from two small
building to kill you (in higher skill levels, there will be Spectres too). You
will also see them somewhat often during the last two episodes. They can launch
green plasma balls or, if they are next to you, scratch you with their claws.
Either way, they can cause quite good damage.

-4.2.2. CACODEMON-
They float in the air, belch ball-lightning, and boast one Hell of a big mouth.
You're toast if you get too close to these monstrosities.

Aspect: Red floating balls with one eye, horns, a blue mouth and lots of teeth.
Hit Points: 400

Cacodemons can often be a flying nightmare in some levels. Unseen in Phobos,
they will appear a lot in The Shores of Hell and Inferno episodes. Sometimes
you'll see three or four of them, and up to eight in the same room can appear
(play The Shores of Hell's secret level, Fortress of Mystery, to see it) which
can be a real nightmare. They throw ball lightning when you are far and bite you
when you are near them. Either way, they do much damage. They also have a good
amount of hit points.

-4.2.3. DEMON-
Sorta like a shaved gorilla, except with horns, a big head, lots of teeth, and
harder to kill. Don't get too close or they'll rip your fraggin' head off.

Aspect: Pink bulls with bright yellow eyes and sharp teeth and large arms.
Hit Points: 150

Demons are strange pinky bulls which run up to you to start biting you. They
don't have a ranged attack but tend to appear in groups. They also have a high
pain threshold, so they can be killed easily with a chaingun or chainsaw (this
doesn't work with the -fastmonsters command or the Nightmare! skill level). They
don't do that much damage, but are somewhat fast.

-4.2.4. IMP-
You thought an imp was a cute little dude in a red suit with a pitchfork. Where
did these brown bastards come from? They heave balls o' fire down your throat
and take several bullets to die. It's time to find a weapon better than that
pistol if you're going to face more than one of these S.O.B.s.

Aspect: Brown hominids with spikes in their shoulders, elbows and knees.
Hit Points: 60

They are the weakest Hell enemy. They launch a fireball at you when they are at
long range, and use their claws to scratch you if you are next to them. They
aren't very resistant and their attacks don't do much damage (also, the fireball
is fairly easy to avoid by strafing), but they often (this is more seen in high
skill levels and the last two episodes) appear in groups. They are one of the
most common enemies in the game.

-4.2.5. LOST SOUL-
Dumb. Tough. Flies. On fire. 'Nuff said.

Aspect: Flying skull with horns. It releases flames from its back.
Hit Points: 100.

These are just flying annoyances. They lure around in the air, and when they
spot you they fly at you extremely fast. If they reach you, they'll bite you and
back up a bit to attack again. A note: NEVER use a Rocket Launcher to fight them
because it will explode close to you. To make things worse, they are usually
found in groups of three or more.

-4.2.6. SPECTRE-
Great. Just what you needed. An invisible (nearly) monster.

Aspect: Semi-transparent Demons.
Hit Points: 150.

The Spectre is a semi-invisible version of the Demon which retains all of the
latter's properties, like attack type, sounds, etc. They are hard to spot in
dark areas or against gray walls, but can be easily seen in bright places or
with the Light Amplification Visors.
+-----------+
|4.3. BOSSES|
+-----------+
Bosses are the ultimate endurance test which will show how strong you've become.
They both have ranged attacks: one of them launches missiles which and even kill
you in one direct hit; the other one has a mounted super-chaingun that can drain
health quickly out of you. They both have incredibly high hit points, requiring
several shots even from the BFG9000 to take them down. They are also immune to
any kind of splash damage, so, if you are using the rocket launcher, only direct
hits will work with them.

-4.3.1. CYBERDEMON-
A missile-launching skyscraper with goat legs. 'Nuff said.

Aspect: Huge, incredibly tall minotaur-like cyborg beast with a rocket launcher
instead of a left arm, a metallic right leg and some wires around it.
Hit Points: 4000.

The Cyberdemon is the most resistant enemy in the game and the most powerful one
too. It has an arm-mounted rocket launcher which can kill you with one or two
direct hits. The rockets also have splash damage, so try to not fight near walls
to avoid it. It can also take HUGE amounts of damage: to defeat him you'll need
 around 400 bullets.
 between 40 and 55 rockets.
between 3 and 5 BFG9000 shots (2 if you are VERY lucky).
Also, it's not affected by splash damage, so if you are fighting with a Rocket
Launcher, you'll have to do a direct hit to damage it. There is one in the last
level of The Shores of Hell, waiting for you outside the Tower of Babel, and
another one in Inferno's secret level. In The Plutonia Experiment's last level:
Go 2 It (Final Doom), there are 13 Cyberdemons around the level, along with lots
of other enemies. It's so tall it can't go through some doors.

-4.3.2. SPIDER MASTERMIND-
You guess the Arachnotrons had to come from somewhere. Hi, mom. She doesn't have
a plasma gun, so thank heaven for small favors. Instead, she has a
super-chaingun. Crap.

Aspect: Huge mechanic spider with two pairs of metallic legs, a chaingun, red
eyes and a big brain over her.
Hit Points: 3000.

This incredibly big mechanic spider is only found in Doom's last level (Dis) and
in the last level of "Thy Flesh Consumed", called Unto the Cruel. Although it's
not as challenging as the Cyberdemon, there isn't much difference. Instead of a
deadly rocket launcher, this thing has a big rapid-fire chaingun mounted in its
front, which can drain your life quickly. The best strategy is to run away and
shoot it as far as possible, because the shots will lose accuracy over distance.
If you have the BFG9000 with you, fire two or three direct shots into her face
and it will explode. If you don't have it, good luck.

||EPISODES||
|+--------+|
+----------+
+--------------------------+
|7.1. KNEE-DEEP IN THE DEAD|
+--------------------------+
Knee-Deep in the Dead is the first and easiest episode in Ultimate DOOM. It has,
as any other episode, 8 standard levels and a secret level unlocked through a
secret exit in one of the levels. It takes place in the UAC facilities in Phobos
and has a rather tech-like theme (metallic walls, computers, etc.).

-7.1.8. PHOBOS ANOMALY-
Phobos Anomaly is the last level of the Knee-Deep in the Dead episode. It is
rather hard comparing with former levels because of the inclusion of two Barons
of Hell (the Bruiser Brothers) near the end of the level. It's rather small.

WALKTHROUGH
You'll start in a small empty room with a switch in front of you. Press it to
lower the platform you're on and reveal a small circular room with Demons (four,
eight or twelve depending on skill level), lots of barrels and a small slime
pool. Destroy the barrels and kill the remaining Demons. Go across the room to
the other side, stand in the elevator and wait for it to rise. Here you'll find
a computer area map, an ammo pack and lots of stimpacks. Pick them up and go
down again (Note that when you go down, the elevator rises forever and the area
becomes unaccesible). Go through the corridor and open the door. There is a pair
of alcoves here (in higher levels, they contain one Demon each). You can find
guns and ammo here. Follow the corridor to a green switch. Press the switch to
go up. You'll come to a star-shaped room with several powerups, ammo, barrels
and, in higher skills, ten Spectres running around. There are also a pair of
closed alcoves which will open when you step in the room, revealing one Baron of
Hell each. There is also ammo inside. Kill both Barons and the walls of the room
will lower, revealing a huge courtyard. There is a small structure in the court
with a switch. Press it and wait for the stairs to fully rise. Go up them and
go through the teleporter. You'll find yourself in the center of a small strange
room filled with enemies. You have invisible walls all around you, so you can't
move. There is also a strange slime floor which will constantly damage you even
with God Mode on (it will turn God Mode off, the only way to prevent damage is
to have Invulnerability on). When your health drops below 11% the level ends.

SECRETS
#1: When you get to the first corridor, past the demon room, check the walls on
your right until you find one that has a greenish color. Open it to reveal a
Soul Sphere.

|7.2. THE SHORES OF HELL|
+-----------------------+
The Shores of Hell is the second episode of the game. It takes place in some UAC
facilities on Deimos, which don't look as futuristic as they did in Phobos.
Instead, they gained some mixed look: there are some tech futuristic parts with
standard keycards and other parts with more hell-like aspect, which use skull
cards instead of key cards. You'll also face two new enemies in this episode:
Cacodemons and the incredibly annoying Lost Souls. This episode also contains
the hardest boss in the game: the Cyberdemon.

-7.2.8. TOWER OF BABEL-
This level has a nice layout with a small building (the one you start in) and a
huge courtyard with lots of columns.

WALKTHROUGH
You start the level in a small square room with a crucifixed Baron of Hell in
each wall (it's just decorative, not a true enemy). There is also a Combat Armor
here and a small square with a switch on each side. Pressing a switch will make
some stairs rise in the opposite sector, and the wall with the Baron will slide
when approached. Depending on which wall you open, you can get a Soul Sphere and
some rockets or lots of rockets. There is also a Rocket Launcher in one of the
rooms. When you are done, exit. In some skill levels you can find Lost Souls
here, but the most important thing is that enormous cybernetic goat that makes
those loud steps. Yes, that's the Cyberdemon. He launches bursts of three
missiles at you, which can kill you if they hit you. They can also do blast
damage, so beware and try not to fight near the edge of the yard. You have a lot
of columns for cover, so hide, get out, shoot and hide again. Between 40 and 50
well-placed rockets will kill him. He is immune to blast damage, so you have to
hit him to do any effect. If you are a cheater, take out the BFG9000 and the
rest is history.

|7.3. INFERNO|
+------------+
Inferno is the last episode in Doom. It's difficulty is more or less the one in
The Shores of Hell (perhaps a bit harder). It takes place right in Hell, which
can be seen in its gory decoration, blood pools you'll have to walk through, a
red montanious sky, and other details.

-7.3.8. DIS-
The layout of this level is rather strange, but still good. It's shaped as a
4-sided clover leaf with a small room in the centre and an extension in the
south side of the map.

WALKTHROUGH
You start in a small empty room with a door in front of you. Open it and go
through the corridor until you find a Rocket Launcher. The small room in the
centre of the courtyard has a Plasma Rifle and a Combat Armor and there is ammo
at a ledge which surrounds the arena.
There are two good methods to follow after you pick up the Rocket Launcher:
Monster infighting: You should see a pair of Cacodemons around the yard. Force
them into shooting the Spider Mastermind. The spider will obviously win against
both of them but will be weakened. Also, while she is distracted fighting one of
them, you can go up the stairs and pick up the ammo that's there.
The Mastermind's ranged weakness: When you pick up the Launcher, back up a bit
and wait. Two Cacodemons (and perhaps a Baron of Hell) will come. Dispose of
them as you want and run to the centre. Turn to face south-east. The Spider will
start shooting. Now, run back quickly until you are at the tip of the upper-left
corner. The Mastermind will keep shooting but, due to her awful accuracy at long
distances, almost every shot will miss you. From there, take out the BFG9000,
plasma rifle, or whatever gun you want and shoot her to death.
You can even combine both of them by running between the Cacodemons and the
Mastermind, go far away and shoot her with a Rocket Launcher or BFG9000 (beware,
you could turn the Cacodemons against you in the process).
