I don't have a definite answer, but I think I have an idea.

As we know, pirating software and games is very common. People do it all the time. One way they can be lessened (Not stopped though) is by restricting certain areas of the game if they don't have the actual CD and a real key. Call of Duty online is huge. People wouldn't be happy if it was blocked.

Most of the time, when you download a game illegally you don't need the CD. By requiring a CD to play online there would be more legitimate copies of the game.

So my best guess is it's just a safeguard against people who illegally downloaded the game.
