While I do write all of my guides for free, it does take a lot of time and
effort to put them together. If you're feeling generous and want to show your
appreciation, I am gladly accepting donations. I don't know exactly what the
donations will be used for, but just know that you would definitely be helping
me make more quality FAQs! Even the smallest donation amounts are appreciated,
and are a great way to say how much you appreciate the work I do. If you do
decide you'd like to donate, please send the donations through PayPal at the
e-mail address listed below. Thank you so very much for considering this!!

By the way, this is also my contact e-mail, so if you want to contribute
something to this or any of my other FAQs, or have a question to ask about one
of them, go ahead and use this e-mail.

Welcome to another FAQ of mine. This one covers the DS game True Swing Golf.
Much as you would expect, this another one of your typical video games based on
the popular sport of golf.

...

That's all I have to say on this game. Enjoy.

-----------------
Modes of the Game
-----------------

There are four modes in which you can play.

 - Quick Start, a game played with the previous settings of a previous game.
If no such game has been played, it is Stroke Play by default.

 - Single Player, the main mode. Within it, you can choose to play Stroke
Play (scoring is based on shots), Match Play (scoring is based on wins),
Free Round (practice), and Championship (sequential series of matches, like
   a career).

 - Wireless Play, a multiplayer mode permitting the use of multiple DS's. Only
one game chip is required for one of the players!

 - Clubhouse, where you can find your high scores, evaluations, various info,
the settings menu, and the shop.

--------------------
Generalized Gameplay
--------------------

Assuming you are playing through Single Player, there are two particular things
to be aware of:

 - Stroke Play is based upon how many shots you take over the course of the
   game.

 - Match Play is based solely upon how many times you are the superior player
on a hole, or how many times you've "won a hole".

You will begin by choosing your course, number of holes to play, whether to
play a mirrored (left is right) course, and what kind of tee to use.

When you begin a hole, you will obtain various information on the hole. This
will include wind speed and direction, par (base level of shots), distance to
the hole in yards (1 yard is a little under 1 meter), shot number, player
score, and a few other things.

To begin, you will see a black "+" mark on the screen and a white line. The
line is coming from you, and the black cross is where the ball will
approximately land. You can tap and drag the cross to move it, changing your
trajectory and your shot power.

Note that you may want to choose the appropriate golf club. This can be found
on the third button down on the Touch Screen. The clubs are as below, to some
extent.

After choosing your club and trajectory, the next thing is to choose where to
hit the ball. It is a completely optional step, but tap the golf ball under
"LIE" just in case. Unlike most games, you can only choose to go for the top or
bottom, but landing on various terrains may cause other effects to the ball.
The yellow dot on it shows where you'll end up hitting it; depending on where
this is in relation to the center can cause a number of effects. Hitting the
right or left side of the ball during your swing can also induce the third and
fourth effects mentioned.

 - Higher up, to induce topspin, making the ball go farther
 - Lower down, to induce backspin, making the ball stop easier or roll backward
 - To the left, to make the ball go to the right
 - To the right, to make the ball go left
 - Dead center, to make the ball go straight and normal

When you're done, tap "Swing" at the bottom of the Touch Screen to continue.

In the next screen, you will want to touch the head of the golf club and slide
it to adjust your power - the closer to the golf ball, the weaker the shot it.
You can also minutely adjust the ball's trajectory with the arrow buttons at
the top of the Touch Screen. As soon as you're ready, slide the golf club
quickly at the golf ball to swing.

This generally will repeat for a bit until you reach the green near the hole.
It gets a bit more specialized there. ... Slightly. In reality, all that
changes is the new lack of ability to choose to have topspin or backspin on
the ball.

There are usually nine or eighteen holes played throughout the course of a
match, and in a way similar to this.

---------------
Scoring Details
---------------

Each given hole will have a set "par" on it. The par is the number of shots it
ideally takes to finish a hole. If you go under this, you earn points (your
score is negative, but that's good), and if you go over, you lose points (you
gain positive points). Hitting exactly par neither hurts or helps you.

The number of shots you take can also be affected by two other things - water
hazards and out-of-bounds area. Both are considered out-of-bounds. This bad
shot will count against you, and you'll be penalized an additional shot. For
example, if you hit the water on your first shot, consider the next shot you
take your third and not the second.

At the end of the hole, the number of shots you take, minus the par, is your
score. If such is positive, you went over (bogey); if negative, you did good by
going under (birdie, eagle, albatross). And, of course, par is neither good or
bad.

In Stroke Play golf games, your overall score at the holes' end is based on
the strokes you took across every hole minus the summed pars of every hole, or
just the added scores you got on every hole.

In Match Play, your record is based on the number of "wins" per hole. If you
have the best score of the participants, that is one win and there's nothing
else to it. This can mean that someone did three shots better than you, but you
still won more holes overall and are still the winner.

To the curious, the relatively official names for various shots:
