You control a driller-wielding guy (usually Susumu the son of Dig-Dug's main character) drilling his way through hundreds of differently-coloured blocks in order to reach the bottom of a tunnel. The gameplay can get very action-paced and sometimes frantic maybe somewhat reminiscent of Tetris Plus (Game boy). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2.0 Controls BBB ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ _______________________________________ | _ _ | | |_| ___________________ |_| | | | _________________ | | | || || | | || || | | || || | | ::::::: || || ::::::: | | ::::::: ||_________________|| ::::::: | __| _ |___________________| _ |__ /_L| |_| |_| |R_\ || |_______________________________________| || ||_________ ___________________ || || ___ | || || ___ ___ || || |___| | || Touchscreen || |SEL||SRT||| || _ | || || || || _| |_ | || || X || || |_ D _| | ||_________________|| Y A || || |_| | | | NINTENDO | | B || || | |/_____________O_DS\| || ||_________| || ||____________|MIC____________||_____________|| |_____________________________________________| Start (SRT) : Pause the game. A single drill usually destroys a single block leaving every block laying on top of it open to whatever gravity wants to do with it (let it fall down of course, d'oh) but of course it is not always that simple. There are 4 different kinds of normal blocks (blue, green, red and yellow) each with the same characteristics: - They are destroyed with a single drill. X ______ __\/___ ______ ______ ______ |red ||green ||blue | |red | |blue | | || || | --> | | | | |______||______||______| |______| X |______| - If they happen to be in mid-air they start shaking for a brief moment before falling straight down. ______ |yellow| | | |______| --> ______ |red | O |yellow| \O/ | |<-Y | | Y |______| / \ |______| / \ - If two or three blocks of the same colour get in contact (no matter if horizontally or vertically) they link to each other creating a bigger block that can't be split up again but is still destroyed with a single drill. ______ |yellow| | | ______ |______| ______________ |yellow||red | O |yellow | O \O/ | || |<-Y --> | |<-Y --> Y |______||______| / \ |______________| / \ / \ - If four or more blocks of the same colour (or big blocks equal of 4 single blocks) connect they disappear. Should there be a big block consisting of four or more single blocks from the beginning it must fall down at least one row or get in contact with another block of the same colour to disappear. ______ |red | | | ______ |______| ______ |red ||yellow||green | | || || | | ||______||______| ______________ | ||green ||red | O --> |red | \O/ | || || |<-Y | | Y |______|| ||______| /_\___ | ______| /_\___ | ||yellow| | ||yellow| |yellow| | || | | || | | | |______________________||______| |______||______| |______| ----------------------3.2 Game Basics (special blocks)--------------------CC2 Besides the normal blocks Mr Driller also contains some special blocks: - Brown X-blocks generally have the same characteristics as the normal blocks with two exceptions: First of all they need to be drilled five times to be desegregated and second you lose 20 percent points of air every time you destroy one by drilling. (I'll talk about air in 3.3) Appears in every play mode. - White blocks completely "act" just like coloured blocks minus the ability of chaining up with other white blocks. (Only appears in Mission Driller, Pressure Driller and Dristone Driller) - Crystal blocks are the most unstable blocks by far: A few seconds after they appear on-screen they stop flashing announcing their implosion, sometimes starting a chain-reaction with blocks situated on top of it. Appears in every play mode. - Metal blocks might be regarded the complete opposite of the crystal blocks as they cannot be destroyed in any way. (Only appears in Time Attack) ---------------------------3.3 Game Basics (items)------------------------CC3 - The most important item in every Mr Driller game is the oxygen tank: These green capsules that can be found in every play mode except for the Time Attack replenish your air meter by 20 percent points. As you lose air automatically all the time and even fiercer when breaking an X-block with an amount of 0% of air leading to a painful death this item can definitely be regarded as essential. (Does not appear in Time Attack) __ / \ / \ / /\ ) / \ \/_/ / \ \/ / /\ \/ ( \/\ / \ \ / \__/ - The red POW capsules only appear in Pressure Driller mode and providing you with energy for your flamethrower which I'll cover later in this guide (in 4.2 to be more precise). __ / \ //\ \ (/\/ \ \ /\ \ \/ / \ \/ / \ \/ / ) \/ / / \/_/ - Dristones are coloured gems that can only be found in Dristone Driller which is exclusive to the Japanese and the European version of Mr. Driller DS. I'll cover them in detail in section 4.4.2. - Flip blocks: These yellow blocks marked with an arrow turn the screen upside-down. (Only appears in Time Attack) - Turn blocks: These orange blocks marked with an arrow turn the screen 90 degrees. (Only appears in Time Attack) - Crystals: These blue blocks marked with a star turn certain metal blocks into crystal blocks. - Clocks come with one of six different numbers on them: 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 which indicates how many seconds will be subtracted from the time taken so far. These items are essential to beating any records. (Only appears in Time Attack Driller) ________ ?-boxes:| These yellow goodies resemble the boxes found in the 3D-Mario Kart-games as they contain randomly chosen items but here you cannot choose if and where to use them; instead they're used right when you pick them up. (Only appear in The Moon and Outer Space in Mission Driller) - Good effects : - Speed-Up : A white shoe on a blue background. (according to the game) This speeds up your movement (not your drilling) for a certain amount of time. - Full Air : A blue air capsule and the word "full" on a blue background. This completely refills your air meter. - Max Up : A blue air capsule with a small double-sided arrow over it on a blue background. This adds five percentage points to your maximum air capacity, even after a death. - Smart Bomb: A few black lines on blue background; looks like when something disappears in a comic. Destroys all block son screen and a little further (but leaves the items). - Barrier : A black man covered by a white shield on a blue background. This temporarily gives you a shield that protects you from a falling block. Either disappears after a certain time or after being hit once (or running out of air). - Low Gravity : A blue block with white lines over it, indicating that it is falling, on blue background. For a short amount of time every block and every item will fall down extremely slowly. - Negative effects : - Turn Block : A black arrow and a "90" on an orange (according to the game) background; just the same as the normal Turn Block. - Half Air : A blue, half-filled air capsule and the word "half" over it on an orange background. - Flip Block : A black arrow on an orange background; just the same as the normal Flip Block except for the background. - X Creator : A pink cross on a red background. This changes a lot of blocks to X- blocks. - W Creator : A white block on a red background. This changes a lot of blocks to white blocks. - C Creator : A white star on a red background. This changes a lot of blocks to crystal blocks which might cause dangerous chain-reactions over your head but it can also assist you by cleaning the screen a bit so in my opinion this actually is not necessarily a bad effect. -----------------3.4 Game Basics (further info and tactics)---------------CC4 - When you're not aiming for any items or any other place you definitely want to go to (like huge blocks in Dristone Driller) you should just drill straight down instead of moving to a different column as alternating between columns usually puts you in danger and it costs time - X-blocks linking up have the same characteristics as normal blocks that link up, except for one thing: When drilling through one of the segments of the big X-block not the whole thing will be destroyed but only the sole block you drilled at. O E--| _______/_\_|__________ ______ ______ | | | | \O/ | | | | | | Y | | | X | | |__/_\___| | | | --> | | | | | X | |______________________| |______________________| - When collecting a falling oxygen-capsule or a POW-capsule before it lands safely anything lying on top of it will continue its fall at full speed. Hence you better wait for the tanks to land before you lay your greedy little hands on them. ;) ______ ______ ______ ______ |red ||yellow||green | |green | | || || | | | |______||______|| | ______ | | |green ||oxygen|| | |red | | | | || || | | | | | |______||______|| | |______| | | |blue || | --> |green | | | | || | | | | | |______________|| | |______|______| | |red | /_\ | | |red |yellow| | | | | | | | | | | |______| X |______| |______|......|______| - Sometimes you'll uncover a blue creature named undergrounder (or a yellow space undergrounder in the levels The Moon and Outer Space) when drilling a block. Usually they only give you a small point boost but sometimes they even provide you with an additional life (only in Mission Driller). To be honest I have absolutely no idea when they appear (in certain randomly-chosen blocks or maybe after a accumulating certain amount of points or after certain combo-sizes or whatever) and what determines whether they give you an extra life or not so I'd really appreciate it if anyone could tell me (of course I'd thank you in this guide for any good info). Update: I think I've at least found out that those undergrounders giving you an extra life appear when having met certain point requirements. The amount of points necessary differs from level to level. - You should drill straight down without moving to either side as long as possible as you avoid being crushed by any falling blocks this way. If you have to move left or right (e.g. when you're low on air and need to grab an oxygen tank or when you stand on an X-block) take a second to check if the lowest block in the column you're going to move on will securely chain up with any other block so you will not have to worry about dodging any falling blocks. - You can climb up one block to your left by pressing left or one block to your right by pressing right on the D-pad (or by moving via Touchscreen). \O/ Y ______ __/_\_ |blue | \O/ --> |blue | | | Y | | |______| / \ |______| - You better forget about the Touchscreen-ability of the DS from the scratch: Moving and drilling via stylus is way to imprecise if you want to navigate through the later levels. - Remember that drilling a block is quicker than destroying it via a chain- reaction, so if you need to change columns quickly (e.g. when a block is falling down from above) and you see that the block you need to destroy in order to be able to move is about to become part of a chain-reaction, you better destroy it yourself before that happens. - When losing a life any block located above you in your column and the adjacent column to your left and right will be destroyed (but will not count towards the number of destroyed blocks and therefore won't grant you any points) but items will stay unharmed meaning that when you inevitably will die (e.g. when being low on air with no oxygen tank being near) you should move to a place with lots of brick above you. ______ |oxygen| | | |______| ______ ______ ______ ______ |red ||yellow||green | |oxygen| |green | | || || | | | | | |______||______|| | |______| | | |green ||oxygen|| | |red | | | | || || | | | | | |______||______|| | |______| | | |blue || | --> |green | | | --> | || | | | | | |______________|| | |______|______| | ______ |red | /_\ | | |red |yellow| | |oxygen| \O/ | | | | | | | | | | | Y |______| X |______| |______|......|______| |______| / \ - When a chain-reaction has already begun (i.e. when four or more blocks of the same colour have connected and start flashing) other blocks of the same colour can still "join" the fading away if they reach the big block before it's already disappeared. ______ |green | | | ______ |______| |green ||yellow| | || | |______|| | | | O | |<-Y |______________|_/_\___ |green | --> \O/ | | Y |______________________| / \ In this example you drill the big yellow block causing the left-most small green block to fall on the big green block starting a fade away. As the other small green block reaches the big brick soon after the first one it joins the reaction. The reaction is over just as soon as if the green block in the middle would not exist so it does not set the reaction back to the original countdown. - In later levels you should try to get directly below X-blocks when having to move left or right on your way down: X-blocks are quite numerous but not too numerous then, so the block above you should be stopped somewhere soon by connecting to another brown block but without causing any chain- reactions, hence the avalanche is stopped in most cases. - When standing directly under a column full of blocks that's about to fall down destroy the block being directly over your head to set back the timer for the whole column to crash down. - When an air tank is kept within four non-adjacent X-blocks you should try to clear out any blocks above the left-most or right-most brown block and then destroy the block directly below it: O E--| _________/_\_|________ |green | | | |_______________ | ______ ______ ______ ______ |red || || | |red || | |red || | | || X || | | || X | | || X | |______||______||______| |______||______| ______ |______||______| | ||oxygen|| |->| ||oxygen|| | | ||oxygen| \O/ | X || || X | | X || || X |-->| X || | Y |______||______||______| |______||______||______| |______||______| _/_\__ |blue || ||yellow| |blue || ||yellow| O |blue || || | | || X || | | || X || |<Y | || X || X | |______||______||______| |______||______||______|/ \|______||______||______| - If there is another X-block that connects to of the higher brown blocks there is another good way of reaching the "creamy filling" ^^: ______________________ ______ ______________ |red || | |red || | | || X | | || X | |______||_______ | |______||_______ | ______ | ||oxygen|| |-->| ||oxygen|| | |red | | X || || | | X || || |->| | |______||______||______| |______||______||______| |______| ______ |blue || ||yellow| O |blue || | O |blue ||oxygen| | || X || |<Y | || X | |--Y | || | |______||______||______|/ \|______||______|_|_/_\_ |______||______| |yellow||red | |yellow||red | |yellow|| | \O/ | || | | || | | || X | Y |______||______________| |______||______________| |______||______| / \ -----------------------------3.5 Scoring System---------------------------CC5 - Every block you destroy by drilling may it be a normal block or a special block raises your points by 10. Drilling a chained-up block gets you 10 times X points with X being the number of single blocks the big one consists of (e.g. a 9-block stone is worth 90 points). - A Crystal block disappearing all by itself is worth 10 points. - A block destroyed by a chain-reaction is worth 40 points times X with again being the number of blocks involved. - Finding an undergrounder that does not grant you a 1-Up is worth 765 points. - The first Air Capsule you collect is worth 100 points, the second one 200 points, the third one 300 points and so on. - After every game in Mission Driller you have the chance to get a special bonus: Every life left will grant you 30,000 points, collecting all air tanks give you 50,000 points and the faster you've been the more points you awarded as a time bonus. The best time bonus I've had so far is 421,450 points (with Holinger-Z in Egypt) so I don't know what might be the highest possible. - When you're aiming for a high score in an easy level in Mission Driller it is essential not to waste too much time trying to reach an air capsule. If getting one would usually require some thinking and some waiting, instead dimply drill through an X-block to cut it short. - As far as I am concerned there is no such thing as a combo multiplier or anything similar so even in a really long chain-reaction still every block is worth 40 points and no more than that. - After completing a stage you get two point bonuses: First you get a bonus, of which I actually can't say how it is determined, so if you have any idea please let me know. Right after that you receive a bonus for simply having beaten the stage. Beating the first hundred meters will earn you 1.000 pts, beating the second hundred meters will earn you 2.000 pts and so on. -----------------------------3.6 Character List---------------------------CC6 There is a total of seven characters playable in Mr. Driller Drill Spirits with only Susumu being unlocked at the beginning. More detailed information on the modes and the shop can be found in the sub- sections. -----------------------------4.1 Mission Driller--------------------------DD1 In Mission Driller you simply try to reach the bottom of a cave as one out of seven characters. Every level consists of a certain amount of stages each being 100 m long and in order to beat a level you have to finish all stages in one go. The deeper you get the more difficult the oxygen tanks are to get and also the quicker you'll use up air. Beating a level without using any items and without losing a single life will earn you a Mr. Driller Badge. Each character gets its own badges providing some replay value. For every mile you go down you get one point that can be spent in the shop even if you die or select retry. Mission Driller is the only game mode where you are able to use Usagi but note that he doesn't have any ending dialogues. As every stage in Mission Driller is randomly generated with only some things being determined (like number of different colours, general layout of X- blocks surrounding the oxygen tanks, etc.) I can't give you a real walkthrough with step-by-step solutions but just more or less specific guidelines. ------------------------------4.1.1 Walkthrough---------------------------D11 ____________ Driller Lab:| Difficulty: 1/5 Record: 120/300 m 30.000 pts Bonus Mileage: 200 m Points needed for a 1-Up: 100.000 The first level shouldn't be too much of a problem. There are nearly no X- blocks hindering you from getting the oxygen tanks and the air consumption is really low so you should not only go for the goal but also for the Perfect Air Bonus and at the same time for the badge. 1-100m : Four colours This is the first stage of the game and it shows. There are all four different kinds of normal blocks but they form a lot of big blocks, air consumption is extremely low, there are only a few X- blocks and in 99 out of 100 cases you shouldn't have any problem trying to drill directly to any oxygen tank you see so just speed through the first 100 miles and collect all air capsules. 101-200m: Two colours You'll learn to love these two-colour-stages: Just try not to get under any blocks, drill apart a big block and wait for the nice chain-reaction. Of course you can also go for a higher Time Bonus by manually drilling through all layers but this might be more dangerous because of falling blocks and if you take your time the stage still ends pretty quickly and you receive some neat bonus points from all those chain-reactions. Still every air-capsule is easy to reach although sometimes you have to drill an X-block at the end of the stage to get the last tank which isn't too much of a problem as you should have around 100 percent of air when reaching the bottom. 201-300m: Four colours This stage is a bit more difficult than the first one simply because there are a few more single blocks here but still every air capsule can be obtained by following the gaps left behind by drilling big blocks, air consumption is really low and X-blocks aren't too numerous. The only thing to watch out for are falling single blocks. ______ Japan:| Difficulty: 1/5 Record: 200/500 m 50.000 pts Bonus Mileage: 400 m Points needed for a 1-Up: 100.000 The second level is a bit longer than the Driller Lab, but not really harder. Gravity is still low as well as the air consumption, X-blocks are relatively scarce and air tanks are both numerous and reachable by easy means so you can easily try to get a badge and the Perfect Air Bonus at the same time. 1-100m : Four colours This plays just like the first one hundred meters in the Driller Lab which means that you should just keep on moving and grab all air capsules on the way down. A few of them might demand some X- block chain-reactions but nothing too mind-boggling. 101-200m: Three colours Three-colour-sections are a lot easier than four-colour-section but of course also harder than two-colour-section except for the low chance of uncontrollable chain-reactions. Actually this is just a step-down in terms of difficulty from the first section and nothing more or less. You'll be able to drill through a lot of big blocks and every oxygen tank is as easy to nab as in the first section so go for all of them. 201-300m: Two colours Just the same as the centre section of the Driller Lab; just enjoy this part. 301-400m: Four colours Although gravity has clearly risen, only getting through this stage is rather easy as you are able to drill down long ways before reaching an X-block but getting every air tank is harder than in any prior stage. Every item is surrounded by X-Blocks so you either have to destroy them via chain-reactions or find (or create) a gap in between them. Since air consumption still is pretty low you better not hasten through here too much but take your time and think strategically. 401-500m: Four colours Pretty much the same as the previous hundred meters but now you'll encounter the first air capsules lying in X-block-dead-ends so prior to picking up one, better check if you can move on afterwards without having to waste 20 percentage points of air. ______ China:| Difficulty: 2/5 Record: 320/800 m 80.000 pts Bonus Mileage: 1000 m Points needed for a 1-Up: 150.000 China is pretty hard when playing a Mr Driller-game for the first time and even after having gained some experience it seems way too hard to get a badge and/or achieve the Perfect Air Bonus but when coming back to this level after some more hours of playing you should relatively easily achieve both goals in one go. 1-100m : Four colours This stage is pretty easy and you should have nearly no problem getting through with every air tank collected and a full air reserve at the end. Most items are covered by X-blocks but not completely. Most of the time you just have to move right below the oxygen tank and let it fall onto you and you rarely need to destroy some X-blocks via chain-reactions. 101-200m: Three colours Big chain-reactions await but still this section might cause some Problems. If you're just aiming at getting through, this stage will be a breeze but if you try to get all oxygen capsules you need to break through a lot of X-block-barriers surrounding them. Move below the items and drill away any normal blocks on which the brown blocks lie so they disappear on their own or by falling onto some other X-blocks. If you do not necessarily want to get the Perfect Air Bonus you should pass out on most of the goodies and only pick up one or two that seem easy to reach. 201-300m: Four colours The number of X-blocks throughout the stage has increased but the amount of X-blocks surrounding oxygen tanks has decreased and still there is rarely a direct way to any item so you have to drill strategically to either open a path or to destroy brown blocks. Basically this stage plays pretty much the same as the previous one only being a bit harder. Decide for yourself if you want to nab every air tank. It is relatively hard but possible and you don't need to watch your air reserve too much since the next hundred meters will be really easy to traverse. 301-400m: Two colours Two colours, few X-blocks and easy-to-reach oxygen capsules, do I need to say more? Drill down as quickly as possible without risking to get crushed and collect all items. 401-500m: Four colours Actually this stage is easier than 201-300m as the oxygen tanks aren't completely covered by brown blocks and as there are lots of big blocks allowing for chain-reactions or quick drilling down. Nabbing all items shouldn't be too hard here. 501-600m: Three colours The amount of X-blocks increases once again but since gravity and air consumption rate are still moderate and since the lack of the fourth colour creates quite a few big blocks you are able to use this to your advantage by planning on how to destroy any X-blocks blocking your path to the air tanks so you should be able to collect all of them. 601-700m: Four colours This plays nearly the same as the previous stage, so by planning ahead to deal with the even more increased number of brown blocks it is very well possible to nab every air capsule. 701-800m: Four colours Play like you did in the previous stage and you won't have too much of a problem. ______ India:| Difficulty: 3/5 Record: 400/1000 m 100.000 pts Bonus Mileage: 1500 m Points needed for a 1-Up: 200.000 India isn't that much harder than China; in fact you should definitely be able to nab all air capsules in the first eight stages after a bit of practice but the last two stages will give you a hard time no matter how long you've played the game so far because of the insanely high gravity. If all you want is to beat the level you might enjoy India but aiming at the Perfect Air Bonus can become a real pain in the...butt. 1-100m : Four colours There are nearly no X-blocks besides those "guarding" the oxygen tanks and each air capsule can be reached via at least one easy- to-reach opening so you should aim at nabbing them all without encountering any problems. 101-200m : Three colours X-blocks are still pretty rare even around the oxygen capsules so once again it is easily possible to pick up every item without too much work. Since you'll encounter lots of big blocks you can haste through the stage only having to watch out for unforeseeable chain-reactions above you. 201-300m : Four colours This is just like the first stage in India with the only difference being that sometimes an air tank is lying in a complete X-block-box which can be easily destroyed by simply drilling through all blocks directly below it. 301-400m : Four colours The only difference to the previous stage is that now nearly no items can be reached directly but considering the still-moderate gravity and air-consumption-rate you can take your time and think about how to uncover all of them. Alternatively you can also haste through this stage maybe just collecting one oxygen capsule. 401-500m : Two colours Enjoy. 501-600m : Four colours Basically the same as 301-400m but with more X-blocks that actually make collecting all air tanks even easier as they allow you to cause chain-reactions with the brown blocks that surround the goodies. 601-700m : Three colours This stage is rather easy since big chain-reactions will both destroy lots of normal blocks as well as the big X-block-packs near air tanks but you need to look out for any avalanches from above; gravity has pretty steeply risen by now and you simply cannot foresee every chain-reaction here so you better play a bit more defensively here, meaning that you should not haste to the items and not move below any columns of differently-coloured blocks. 701-800m : Three colours This stage plays the same as the previous one. 801-900m : Four colours This plays the same as 301-400m but with a way higher gravity and air-consumption rate. If you only want to make it to the end you won't have too much of a problem as there aren't that many X- blocks but if you want to collect all air tanks without being crushed and without running out of air you need to be lucky with the position of the items and you need to think quickly...but it is still possible. 901-1000m: Four colours Good luck on this one if you're aiming at the Perfect Air Bonus: Basically this stage is 801-900m with a perverted gravity so you will have to stay calm and plan ahead but still you mustn't lose any time or otherwise you'll fall prey to the air loss. ______ Egypt:| Difficulty: 4/5 Record: 600/1500 m 150.000 pts Bonus Mileage: 3200 m Points needed for a 1-Up: 250.000 Although it is a strange thing: In my opinion India is harder than Egypt. Of course Egypt is longer (or deeper if you prefer ^^) so you have to maintain your concentration a bit longer but in India the two last stages are really hard whereas here the high-gravity-stages are rather nice to play. One of them is a two-colour-stage, another one is a three-colour-stage and the sole four-colour-stage with an extremely high gravity is actually eased by the high amount of single brown blocks that link up as you go instead of crashing down on you. Receiving both the Perfect Air Bonus and the Driller Badge in one go is possible but may require various tries as well as some luck so not a single air tank gets caught on two X-blocks when you've reached the bottom of a stage. 1-100m : Four colours After completing India, the first stage of Egypt can only be regarded as a pushover. Constantly drill down and aim for every air capsule without ever stopping or thinking about chain-reactions. 101-200m : Four colours Play like you did in the previous stage and you shouldn't have any problems as there are only a few X-blocks more here than in the first stage. Only once or twice you will have to think a bit about how to uncover an oxygen capsule. 201-300m : Two colours Enjoy. 301-400m : Four colours Lots of X-blocks but since they're forming really big blocks around the air tanks you can involve them in chain-reactions in no time and nab all goodies. Just watch out not to get caught inside an X-block-dead-end. 401-500m : Four colours Plays like 301-400m only with more X-blocks getting in your way. Since air consumption still isn't too bad you should plan ahead and destroy most brown blocks you encounter (but of course not those being out of your way). 501-600m : Four colours This stage again plays the same as 301-400m; drill straight down as long as possible and when having to move around any X-blocks you can destroy them via chain-reactions in most cases. Air capsules can also be reached easily as they lie in really big X-block-boxes. 601-700m : Four colours Think of this stage as the first stage with higher gravity: Easy- to-reach oxygen tanks and nearly no X-blocks. Just drill down constantly and pick up every item. 701-800m : Two colours Enjoy. 801-900m : Four colours This is the most difficult stage in Egypt so far: The number of air tanks is low, they're well-secured by a few brown blocks and you can cause nearly no big chain-reactions (neither with normal nor with brown blocks) but the gravity and air consumption aren't as bad as in this depth in India so stay calm and stick to my hints in the further info-section of this guide to reach all items. 901-1000m : Three colours As there are a lot of big normal blocks you can pretty well reach all air tanks and the low number of X-blocks in this stage allow you to drill straight down most of the time and have a few columns above you nearly completely empty so you can drill strategically when aiming for an item. 1001-1100m: Four colours This is like 401-500m so act accordingly. 1101-1200m: Four colours Like the previous stage this one consists of a lot of X-blocks not only around the items but also throughout the whole well; most of them can be destroyed by linking them and thus even uncover the air capsules. Most goodies should be easy to obtain, but if you find one too hard to get, you might just as well ignore it and move on since air consumption has become pretty steep by now. 1201-1300m: Two colours Enjoy. 1301-1400m: Four colours Definitely lots of brown blocks and they even do not form big blocks from the get-go but by simply moving around them you can destroy a lot of them and often even automatically reach the oxygen tanks. The best thing to do here is to build up some good speed and to slalom around the X-blocks. 1401-1500m: Three colours A pretty easy ending for Egypt: This section is like 901-1000m but with increased speed. ________ America:| Difficulty: 5/5 Record: 800/2000 m 200.000 pts Bonus Mileage: 6000 m Points needed for a 1-Up: 300.000 Good luck! America is about on par with The Moon in terms of difficulty, hence it is the hardest level of all game modes in Mr Driller DS. You will have to deal with lots of stages in general and with lots of four-colour- stages in particular and at the end you will experience a gravity that hopefully will never come real in our world. If your goal is to simply beat the level without using items you don't want to lose a life before ca 1000m and the second one before about 1700m but of course it would be better if you could stay alive even longer. Getting a badge is still possible but requires four things: Luck considering the level layout, quick reflexes, quick thinking and a lot of patience. You are most likely to start over and over again which can get really frustrating after the twentieth death at 1700m. The Perfect Air Bonus also is really hard to get and in my opinion achieving both goals at the same time without the use of any items is nearly impossible as the oxygen capsules in the last few stages require too much time to get without dying from air shortage. Up to maybe 1500m you should stick to my hints in the hints section but after that you better just run for your life any take cover beneath brown blocks. 1-100m : Four colours Just drill strenuously towards every air capsule. Since all of them are easy to reach you shouldn't ever have any problems in this stage. 101-200m : Four colours Only a bit harder in terms of air tanks-collecting as some of them are covered by four X-blocks but overall you can continuously drill on and collect a lot of oxygen capsules on the go. For the few "guarded" ones you can take your time to collect them too. 201-300m : Four colours Here most items lie in a large group of brown blocks, hence can be picked up in no time when starting chain-reactions. The only thing you really need to watch out for here is to not get caught on a big X-block requiring you to drill through a brown block. 301-400m : Four colours Most air capsules are well-secured but with a bit of luck the level layout allows for big chain-reactions with the normal blocks thus easing your way to the goodies. Even if you aren't that lucky you might still consider nabbing all items since air consumption is low at this point. 401-500m : Four colours Basically the same as the previous stage: Most air capsules lie amidst four sole brown blocks but can be freed relatively easy via chain-reactions. If you don't feel too comfortable with the game play just yet or if you realize that a certain oxygen tank would require too much work to get you might want to pass up on one or two items. 501-600m : Four colours Pretty much the same as 401-500m. Collect as many air tanks as possible even if you'd have to waste more air than you'd receive as this will grant you additional points but will probably not harm you, considering the easy stage that comes next. Of course do not play too greedy; your first goal is to reach the end of the well. 601-700m : Two colours Enjoy. 701-800m : Four colours Some air capsules are kept within those pesky four-X-block-boxes as I call them and some lie in big groups of X-blocks. Since you should have a decent air supply left from the previous two-colour-stage you can try to collect all items but as air consumption and gravity start to make things complicated you'll want to decide here whether you're aiming at the Perfect Air Bonus or just want to get through the level. If the latter one is what you're doing then ignore any hard-to- reach oxygen tanks here. 801-900m : Four colours Getting all air capsules becomes harder but not much. If you feel comfortable and if you have got more than 70 percent of air left go get the bonus points otherwise move swiftly around the brown blocks and keep an eye on any easy-to-reach goodies. 901-1000m : Three colours Lots of chain-reactions await so picking up the air capsules isn't too difficult but this also requires you to watch out for any debris falling from above. Also watch out not to waste too much time waiting for the chain- reactions to end; the high air consumption rate demands for some aggressive play style. Unless an item gets caught out of range at the bottom of the stage the best thing to do is to collect every oxygen capsule. 1001-1100m: Four colours Basically the same as 801-900m but with more X-blocks allowing for chain-reactions near the items and with a higher air consumption rate. 1101-1200m: Four colours By now gravity has become really bad so unless you're "desperately" aiming for the Perfect Air Bonus you shouldn't move left and right too much, but preferably stay in the centre and use X-blocks as a cover because they are very likely to form big blocks here and in later stages. 1201-1300m: Four colours Basically the same as before but now you can act a bit more greedy or play more defensively considering the next stage. 1301-1400m: Two colours Enjoy. 1401-1500m: Four colours Neat chain-reactions and some really, really high gravity make for some frantic action. You better drill somewhat defensively down and watch for any air tanks you uncover automatically. Surely if there aren't any you should work on uncovering one but only if you're sure you can do it without too much hassle. 1501-1600m: Four colours The difficulty doesn't evolve to our favour; the stage layout is the same as before but gravity and air consumption get really mad here. Either you have some good reflexes and/or some serious luck or you won't make it through here without dying. 1601-1700m: Three colours Big chain-reactions used to be your best friends but now they actually are more of a threat if started uncontrolled. Think quick and drill any big blocks that won't unleash avalanches right above you or take cover under X-blocks and try to collect lots of air tanks since you'll create large holes in the block structures. 1701-1800m: Four colours Drill constantly, ignore most oxygen capsules and put more effort into reflexes than into planning...and good luck.^^ If you're still relatively well-supported with air you can use my beloved "move-around-brown-blocks-and-take-cover-beneath-them"- tactic. 1801-1900m: Three colours Just like the previous three-colour-stage; use it to fill up your air meter one last time with relative ease. 1901-2000m: Four colours Nearly a three-colour-stage and lots of X-blocks so with some luck you can clear big parts of this area with a few drilling actions but whatever the stage looks like in the end: Move to the exit as fast as possible and evaluate for yourself if your air reserve suffices or not, thus if you can ignore the air tanks or not. _________ The Moon:| Difficulty: 5/5 Record: 800/2000 m 200.000 pts Bonus Mileage: 8000 m Points needed for a 1-Up: 300.000 The Moon is pretty much the same as America: Both have the same depth, the same general layout for every stage, the same gravity and air consumption, hence you don't need two separate full-fletched guides. The only difference between the two levels are the ?-boxes scattered throughout every stage of The Moon. These neat items have ten different effects that are randomly chosen each time you pick up one. So you never know if a ?-box will help you or maybe renders your trip impossible by cutting your air reserve in half for example. If you leave out this item for the whole level you can absolutely play The Moon as you did America but in my opinion the ?-boxes make this level way more interesting than any other level (except for Outer Space) hence you should pick them up. Actually in most cases you will receive a positive effect so when one of these yellow goodies lies near you and is easily accessible, go get it except for when you've nearly made it to the end of the level and feel like being able to do it without any special boost since you'd want to bite your DS if you'd happen to get an X-Creator-box blocking your way on the last few meters. ___________ South Pole:| Difficulty: 5/5 Record: 1000/oo m (infinite) 250.000 pts Bonus Mileage: N/A Points needed for a 1-Up: 400.000 Gravity sucks, but it's the law! South Pole starts off with both a high gravity and a high air consumption rate but don't worry too much: You won't encounter too many X-blocks and in some stages lots and lots of air capsules. Play just like you feel to. You can play defensively by just ignoring most items and use chain-reactions to your advantage without moving too much and head for a stage that's stuffed with oxygen tanks or you can play aggressively by quickly aiming for any air tanks you see; both ways are equally promising but sometimes you better move quickly and take a risk, especially in those stages only containing a single oxygen tank. Since this level is just for fun I will not give you a real guide on the stages but just a general outline on the whole level and general info on the stages. 1-100m : Four colours (Actually only three colours except for one big red block) # of air capsules: 2 101-200m : Three colours # of air capsules: 1 201-300m : Four colours # of air capsules: 17 (!) 301-400m : Four colours # of air capsules: 6 401-500m : Three colours # of air capsules: 6 501-600m : Two colours # of air capsules: 3 601-700m : Four colours # of air capsules: 1 701-800m : Four colours # of air capsules: 14 801-900m : Four colours # of air capsules: 5 901-1000m : Three colours # of air capsules: 5 1001-1100m: Four colours # of air capsules: 3 1101-1200m: Three colours # of air capsules: 1 1201-1300m: Three colours # of air capsules: 13 1301-1400m: Two colours # of air capsules: 1 1401-1500m: Four colours # of air capsules: 5 1501-1600m: Four colours # of air capsules: 5 1601-1700m: Three colours # of air capsules: 4 1701-1800m: Four colours # of air capsules: 4 1801-1900m: Three colours # of air capsules: 4 1901-2000m: Four colours # of air capsules: 4 From here on the stages 1001-2000m are simply repeated over and over again. ____________ Outer Space:| Difficulty: 5/5 Record: 1000/oo m (infinite) 250.000 pts Bonus Mileage: N/A Points needed for a 1-Up: 400.000 Outer Space resembles South Pole in being infinitely deep and therefore being just for fun and it starts off with a pretty high gravity, too. Like The Moon this level features ?-boxes either granting positive effects or hindering you on your way down. Given the just-for-fun-nature of Outer Space I'd say you should collect every ?-box you encounter to vary the gameplay. The other difference to South Pole is the location of the air tanks: In South Pole you have to deal with "air-crammed" stages followed by stages with only a single item whereas in Outer Space every stage contains a decent amount of oxygen tanks. So no stage here is really that much harder than any other stage and you can keep a steady pace throughout the level. Since this level is just for fun I will not give you a real guide on the stages but just a general outline on the whole level and general info on the stages. 1-100m : Four colours (Actually only three colours except for two green blocks) # of air capsules: 8 101-200m : Three colours # of air capsules: 7 201-300m : Four colours # of air capsules: 6 301-400m : Four colours # of air capsules: 6 401-500m : Three colours # of air capsules: 5 501-600m : Four colours # of air capsules: 5 601-700m : Two colours # of air capsules: 6 701-800m : Four colours # of air capsules: 5 801-900m : Four colours # of air capsules: 5 901-1000m : Three colours # of air capsules: 5 1001-1100m: Four colours # of air capsules: 6 1101-1200m: Three colours # of air capsules: 4 1201-1300m: Three colours # of air capsules: 4 1301-1400m: Two colours # of air capsules: 6 1401-1500m: Four colours # of air capsules: 5 1501-1600m: Four colours # of air capsules: 5 1601-1700m: Three colours # of air capsules: 4 1701-1800m: Four colours # of air capsules: 4 1801-1900m: Three colours # of air capsules: 4 1901-2000m: Four colours # of air capsules: 4 From here on the stages 1001-2000m are simply repeated over and over again. ---------------------------4.1.2 Ending Dialogues-------------------------D12 Driller Lab: __________________________________________________________________________ Susumu: |Susumu: Yes! By collecting up to three POW capsules you fuel your flame-thrower which can be used to shoot a fireball upwards at any distance. The enemy's life energy is determined by its weight measured in tons. Hitting the spider's only weak spot (a three spaces-wide flower appearing either in the centre or at the left respectively right) with a single POW- capsule collected will diminish its weight by 10 tons, a level 2-fireball causes 25 damage points and having collected the maximum of three capsules at a time will result in a fireball that deals 40 damage points so you'd be advised to shoot only when having reached the maximum pow. Special blocks have the same effect here as in every other mode although they look different: I cannot tell you why they are shaped like snowmen but what I can tell you is that the robot sometimes spills out new white blocks, X- blocks or crystal blocks replacing normal blocks. Dying in Pressure Driller is only possible when touching the enemy causing an instant defeat), being crushed by blocks or going out of air just make you lose time and all POW capsules collected so far. Note that the spider robot will throw off its outer shell after a certain amount of damage taken making it move quicker than before. Just like in Mission Driller any miles you traverse will count towards the shopping points and you receive bonus miles after completing a level. Points do not matter in this play mode, the only things recorded are the time needed and the depth you were at when ending a level (the less distance you moved the better). The more important factor for record keeping is the time so if you've improved on the depth needed to beat a level but the time needed is higher than on the old record nothing new will be saved. Usagi cannot be used in this game mode. ------------------------------4.2.1 Walkthrough---------------------------D21 ______ Korea:| Difficulty: 1/5 Weight: 200 tons Record: 200 m 5'00''00 Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus : 50 m No Miss Bonus : 150 m Perfect Hit Bonus: 80 m Amount of remaining tons at which the spider speeds up: 40 tons This level is more of a practice level than anything else. Simply drill straight down to the fourth pow-capsule (you'll collect the first three on the go) and wait for the centre flower to appear and shoot at it right about when the latch is about to open. Now move on to the next two POW capsules shoot at the right flower and collect the next three capsules. Probably you won't have completely powered up by the time the left flower pops out (but it is possible with some good timing) so just drill on and wait by the tenth capsule to shoot at the centre flower. Go on like before and you should beat this level after about a minute. Don't bother about the air capsules and just collect every pow-capsule as they're extremely easy to reach. ______ China:| Difficulty: 2/5 Weight: 300 tons Record: 300 m 7'30''00 Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus : 100 m No Miss Bonus : 270 m Perfect Hit Bonus: 140 m Amount of remaining tons at which the spider speeds up: 60 tons At the beginning once again try to collect every POW capsule and hit every flower with a three capsule fire ball as far as possible. You'll have to move to the left and to the right to get every single tank but as there are only a few X-blocks and as the spider doesn't move too fast it shouldn't be much of a problem. After a while the enemy gains quite a lot of speed so you might want to abandon the capsule hunt if it moves in too close and just concentrate on escaping. Soon after that you'll come to a two-colour-section (only blue and yellow blocks) rendering your escape a lot easier and enabling you to collect POW capsules. Right after the two-colour-section you'll reach three red capsules surrounded by two rows of X-blocks. Use these to end the level or at least nearly. Note that the last hit doesn't have to be performed with a full POW meter but can also be done with only two POW capsules collected as the spider robot has only 20 tons left after the seventh hit. Like in Korea you shouldn't bother too much about your air meter as the level ends before two minutes and collecting an air tank once in a while is more than sufficient. ________ Germany:| Difficulty: 2/5 Weight: 400 tons Record: 400 m 10'00''00 Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus : 550 m No Miss Bonus : 540 m Perfect Hit Bonus: 300 m Amount of remaining tons at which the spider speeds up: 120 tons Once again just constantly drill down and try to grab every POW capsule available while only collecting air capsules when they're directly on your way and shoot at the enemy with max-powered shots whenever possible. Grabbing all capsules is still fairly easy but the enemy's scheme needs some extra attention because this time the flower pops out once in the centre, then twice on the right and then twice to the left followed by another centre flower appearance before the scheme repeats. After a while you'll traverse a blue-yellow-section like in China this time followed by two POW capsules-row consisting of three tanks. This time though you won't be able to end the level here so you'll have to drill further and deal with the increased amount of X-blocks covering POW capsules. From here on the level plays pretty much like its beginning only that there are a few more X-blocks. Just collect as many red tanks as possible shoot whenever you're fully charged and now you should also collect some air tanks as you simply can't afford to die here too often. If you cannot beat the enemy within the next few hundred miles you'll come to a little stair made of five POW capsules hopefully making for a quick end of the level. ______ Italy:| Difficulty: 3/5 Weight: 500 tons Record: 500 m 12'30''00 Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus : 800 m No Miss Bonus : 750 m Perfect Hit Bonus: 400 m Amount of remaining tons at which the spider speeds up: 140 tons After dealing the first hit the enemy soon approaches really close so you might not have the opportunity to collect every POW capsule after that. Just concentrate on escaping and try to get every red tank that's basically on your way and hit the spider as often as possible without getting yourself into any trouble. Like in Germany the "flower pattern" is once in the centre, twice to the right and twice to the left. If your timing is right you come across a row of three red capsules in the centre column right when the centre flower opens up so you get the chance to deal a safe hit. Afterwards your way down takes you through a green-yellow-section only containing a few POW capsules but lots of air tanks so you might want to grab at least one. The next section consists of all four kinds of normal blocks but starts with a stair made of three red capsules usually giving you the chance for two consecutive hits at the same centre flower. Your enemy will have slowed down by now so you can fully concentrate on grabbing all POW capsules and not being crushed which actually is quite easy as the spider still is relatively close to you so there never are that many blocks above you. Next is a three-colour-section where you might want to pick up an air tank and again every POW capsule you come across. By now the robot probably has speeded up so your primary goal is to stay ahead of it. Staying alive luckily is eased a lot by the following three- colour-section. Unfortunately the number of X-blocks has increased by now but most POW capsules should still be easy to reach. Just don't get too greedy and only collect items at the outer end of the well when the robots I not visible on the lower screen and you'll end the stage in a few moments. If it takes a little longer you'll find another row of three POW capsules. Remember that like in China you don't have to shoot the last fireball with maximum power as the spider will be down to 20 tons after the 12th hit. _______ Brazil:| Difficulty: 4/5 Weight: 600 tons Record: 600 m 15'00''00 Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus : 1850 m No Miss Bonus : 1400 m Perfect Hit Bonus: 700 m Amount of remaining tons at which the spider speeds up: 160 tons Just like in any other level you start your drilling tour in a four-colour- section this time being pretty long but don't worry too much about the first few strikes against the spider. Gravity is a bit higher than before but the number of X-blocks isn't too high, all capsules are easy to reach, your enemy is quite fast but should stay away for a while and after about one and half minutes you even come across a stair made of five red capsules. So enjoy this first section and try to hit the target as often as possible. The only thing to note here is that the flowers have a new pattern: centre, right, left, centre, left, right, repeat. Right before the upcoming three-colour-section the spider will probably have reached you, but as the next section completely lacks any POW capsules you can concentrate on escaping. After about two and a half minutes you'll enter a two-colour-section where you should pick up as many air capsules as you need and all four POW capsules. The next four-colour-section starts off with a line of X-blocks that can be easily destroyed by grabbing the first POW capsule giving you the chance to grab as many of the other five capsules as possible and strike two times but most often you don't have the possibility to grab all of them so you might want to stand in the centre, wait for the centre flower to open and then grab all remaining tanks in the three centre columns. POW capsules now are surrounded by a lot more X-blocks than before so if you can't get one easily just don't try too hard since the spider still is pretty quick and furthermore since you'll come across three columns made of two or three red tanks each (randomly chosen), with the first one sometimes being covered by an X-block that you should drill away. Drilling under the column won't do you any good as the spider probably is so close by that it destroys the tanks before they can fall down. By now you could have already beat the level but without enough experience in Pressure Driller you probably will have to drill on. The next two sections both contain normal blocks of three different colours and quite a lot of X-blocks but because of the absence of the fourth kind of normal blocks it shouldn't be too hard for you to reach most POW capsules and finally defeat the robot. _______ Mexico:| Difficulty: 5/5 Weight: 800 tons Record: 800 m 20'00''00 Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus : 3500 m No Miss Bonus : 2400 m Perfect Hit Bonus: 1200 m Amount of remaining tons at which the spider speeds up: 240 tons Once again you begin a level in a four-colour-section. Like before you should collect every POW capsule and pass out on most air capsules but this time you have to drill around lots of brown blocks from the get-go. (The flower pattern is the same as in Brazil) Pretty soon you'll find a row of X-blocks and six POW capsules just like in Brazil. Wait for the centre flower to open and bring in two hits here. Afterwards (when the spider has approached closely) two three-colour-sections await with some nicely to reach POW capsules and the chance to nab at least one oxygen tank. The hunt continues in a four-colour-section without any special structures but the spider's speed and the high amount of X-blocks make for a relatively hard time getting through if you want to go on attacking but nonetheless it is possible. After that Namco grants you a little break by letting you drill through a two-colour-section followed by another four-colour-section and a speeding up of the robot. Here you get a chance to strike two times at the same flower as you'll come across two rows of X-blocks "guarding" six POW capsules. You can either make an X-block drop onto these rows or alternatively move to the left or to the right and drill through a normal block. The next three-colour-section is pretty average: Just move around the lots of X-blocks, grab as many POW capsules as possible and any air tanks if necessary. Afterwards you'll get into a four-colour-section starting off with a small "cave" consisting of X-blocks and containing three POW capsules. If you're low on air and/or the spider robot is extremely close you don't want to get in there as you will have to drill a brown block at the bottom to get out again but if both doesn't apply go get the tanks. Just below this cave you'll even find two more columns consisting of three red tanks each. These are surrounded by X-blocks, too, but only to the left and to the right, so you should definitely grab them. By now probably the spider has thrown off its outer shell speeding up the hunt even more. If you don't feel like you're capable of both drilling down quick enough and collecting POW capsules don't do it. After a short while you come to a two-colour-section leading to a four-colour-section that begins with two rows of X-blocks that surround a lot of easy to reach red tanks. Watch out for falling blocks since gravity has risen steeply and go on like in the last four-colour-section meaning that you should either feel comfortable and nab POW tanks or only drill down and wait for the next big gathering of red tanks (a stair made of these goodies) and end the level. The last level of Pressure Driller seems intimidating at first but with a bit of practice (and a lot of resistance to frustration ^^) it becomes rather easy. --------------------------------4.2.2 Records-----------------------------D22 I will only list the best record for each level and not one for each character since I think of it to be unnecessary. (Of course all high scores are reached without the use of any Driller Store items) Korea : 0'51''05, 154m (Taizo) China : 1'45''72, 339m (Taizo) Germany: 2'32''61, 441m (Taizo) Italy : 2'51''80, 519m (Taizo) Brazil : 3'53''82, 657m (Taizo) Mexico : 5'37''91, 886m (Susumu) ---------------------------4.3 Time Attack Driller------------------------DD3 In Time Attack you try to reach the bottom of a cave as fast as you can. Just like in Pressure Driller you only have one life, points do not matter and you can choose between all characters. In order to balance the different movement speed of the various characters (Usagi is not playable) there are different time limits for each driller to beat. As Time Attack is the only play mode with non-randomly-generated levels every level has some path you're supposed to take for the fastest time but often there are different options to take and you have to try out which way is the best. In this play mode the air supplies are infinite and the air capsules as essential item are exchanged by clocks which stop the timer for a certain amount of time. Furthermore there are three Time Attack-exclusive collectibles that affect blocks (see 3.3 for more info). After beating every normal level you unlock the reverse courses which are just mirrored versions of the normal levels with a real bad-ass time-limit. Since both kinds of levels basically have the same layout I'll "only" give you a guide for the normal versions but with solutions that will also apply to the harder reverse courses times. So when playing the reverse courses just change any "left" to "right" in my guide and vice versa. ------------------------------4.3.1 Walkthrough---------------------------D31 ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Depth 100 m: ~~~~~~~~~~~~ _______ Amazon:| Difficulty: 1/5 Time to beat: 0'14''00 (Taizo) 0'15''00 (Susumu) 0'15''00 (Anna) 0'17''00 (Puchi) 0'17''00 (Holinger-Z) Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus: 100 m Reverse difficulty: 3/5 Reverse time to beat: 0'09''00 (Taizo) 0'10''00 (Susumu) 0'10''00 (Anna) 0'12''00 (Puchi) 0'12''00 (Holinger-Z) Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus: 300 m This level basically is self-explaining once you look at it: Simply aim for every little hole and pick up every clock. At the beginning you should drill straight down to the first clock. From here you always have a clock on screen being only one big block away. Follow this path to collect every item and you will complete this level in no time. ______ China:| Difficulty: 1/5 Time to beat: 0'45''00 (Taizo) 0'46''00 (Susumu) 0'46''00 (Anna) 0'48''00 (Puchi) 0'48''00 (Holinger-Z) Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus: 100 m Reverse difficulty: 3/5 Reverse time to beat: 0'39''00 (Taizo) 0'40''00 (Susumu) 0'40''00 (Anna) 0'42''00 (Puchi) 0'42''00 (Holinger-Z) Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus: 300 m China is more intricate than the first two levels and may be somewhat intimidating at first sight but actually it really isn't that hard. First drill straight down, leave the small yellow block intact and pick up the Turn Block, then through the other yellow block to grab the Crystal. After drilling through the crystal block the quickest path is blocked by a yellow block, a red block, a yellow block and a green block. You pick up another Turn Block here, allowing you to simply move left to the Flip Block. Move one square to the right and nab the Crystal which creates three entrances into the big metal block beneath you. Drill through the one in the middle and destroy another yellow, red, yellow, red block to pick up the third Crystal. The big brown block will disappear allowing you to drill straight down to the fourth Crystal creating two tunnels in the metal block. Take the left path and nab the left Flip Block by destroying a green, a yellow and a green block. Position yourself under the other Flip Block, directly drill towards the clock and save a little time by destroying the red block to your right and then the blue one beneath you. ________ Denmark:| Difficulty: 1/5 Time to beat: 0'15''00 (Taizo) 0'16''00 (Susumu) 0'16''00 (Anna) 0'18''00 (Puchi) 0'18''00 (Holinger-Z) Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus: 100 m Reverse difficulty: 3/5 Reverse time to beat: 0'11''00 (Taizo) 0'12''00 (Susumu) 0'12''00 (Anna) 0'14''00 (Puchi) 0'14''00 (Holinger-Z) Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus: 300 m Drill down into the small cave and further to the crystal block. Drill to the right and down through the red block to the next clock before the crystal block breaks apart. Now destroy the big green block, use the crystal block to move right through the blue, yellow, red blocks and through the group of crystal blocks before they disappear on their own. Collect the clocks and destroy the blue block to your right to fall down to another set of crystal blocks that you should destroy yourself to reach another clock. Move on through two more normal blocks and once again drill apart a few crystal blocks to enter a small cave in which you nab two clocks, destroy a block to the left, collect two additional clocks, repeat this to your right and don't leave the cave to the left but move back to the right and drill directly towards the next clock. Next, you move down and to the right wall, pass the big brown block, move to the left and destroy the sole yellow block under the falling clock to reach it easier. Now you move to the left wall, drill down and move along the whole row quickly before the crystal blocks disappear. Again now you need to drill down to a crystal block quickly and use it to reach the clock to your left. Destroy the green block to your right, the red one below you and finally you have the goal on screen. ______ Egypt:| Difficulty: 2/5 Time to beat: 0'22''00 (Taizo) 0'23''00 (Susumu) 0'23''00 (Anna) 0'25''00 (Puchi) 0'25''00 (Holinger-Z) Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus: 200 m Reverse difficulty: 4/5 Reverse time to beat: 0'14''00 (Taizo) 0'15''00 (Susumu) 0'15''00 (Anna) 0'17''00 (Puchi) 0'17''00 (Holinger-Z) Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus: 500 m First drill down at the left wall to get under the big brown block. Here move to the right to the point where an X-block seems to be missing in the big structure and wait for it to disappear. Right when you are able to move left again do so and collect all clocks on the way. Repeat the whole first part and make sure to destroy the sole yellow block as well as the red four-piece block and the green two-piece block because otherwise you would get crushed after destroying the second big brown block. Repeat it again with the only difference being that you have to stand in the centre when the big brown block is about to fall down and that you move left and right when catching the clocks. Guess what? You have to repeat the last section now only that this time you should drill down to the right and not to the left as this is a bit quicker to do and you'll need every split-second you can save in this level. After having collected the last clock just drill down to the exit and pray for having been quick enough if you're playing reverse Egypt. So far I haven't found any better way to clear this level and actually of all reverse courses I had the hardest time beating Egypt. Even when following my guide you still need to drill perfectly meaning that you have to drill just right when getting in reach of a block. _______ France:| Difficulty: 2/5 Time to beat: 0'21''00 (Taizo) 0'22''00 (Susumu) 0'22''00 (Anna) 0'24''00 (Puchi) 0'24''00 (Holinger-Z) Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus: 200 m Reverse difficulty: 4/5 Reverse time to beat: 0'15''00 (Taizo) 0'16''00 (Susumu) 0'16''00 (Anna) 0'18''00 (Puchi) 0'18''00 (Holinger-Z) Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus: 500 m This whole level is based on deciding whether to take a left path or a right path. Although it is tempting to take the right path at the beginning to get the three-seconds-clock you should refrain from taking that way as it will leave you about half a second behind the other path. So instead drill to the one- second-clock on the left and then nab the second one by destroying the green and the big yellow block. The next section also tries to "bait" you into a slower section...and considering myself it actually succeeded really often. ^^ The left path looks better as you'd collect two clocks on the way down as opposed to a lone somewhat out-of-reach clock but in fact just like in the first section you can save half a second by moving as far to the right as possible after collecting the second clock (do not drill, just move) and wait for the red block to disappear. Right after that you have to position yourself under the three-second-clock already destroy the yellow block under your feet (to save a few split-seconds) and let the goodie fall directly into your hands. If you drill the red block instead of leaving the job to gravity the X-block covering the clock takes longer to fall so don't do it. Now let yourself fall down, drill straight down until you can enter the small cave and drill down to the sole clock and to the left in order to pick up the two-second-clock. This time again the left path will save you precious split-seconds. Just drill down to the two-second-clock as quickly as possible and move on to the next centre-clock. Next you should take the right path which doesn't really need any explanation: Just drill down until you destroy the big blue block. From here on only collect the single clock to your left and drill to the exit. ________ Germany:| Difficulty: 2/5 Time to beat: 0'27''00 (Taizo) 0'28''00 (Susumu) 0'28''00 (Anna) 0'30''00 (Puchi) 0'30''00 (Holinger-Z) Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus: 200 m Reverse difficulty: 4/5 Reverse time to beat: 0'19''00 (Taizo) 0'20''00 (Susumu) 0'20''00 (Anna) 0'22''00 (Puchi) 0'22''00 (Holinger-Z) Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus: 500 m Unfortunately this level can't be easily described and mastered as most block positions change within seconds because of the many crystal blocks throughout the whole level...actually up to now I never realised we had so many unstable blocks in the ground here in Germany, but, oh well, there's always something new to learn I guess. ^^ So maybe you better try to find your own way through this level following a few guidelines given out by me: First of all you should only move out of the three centre columns when closing in on the clocks; there are no really long, big blocks making up for the time you need to move aside otherwise and the centre columns are just as dangerous as all other ones. Second you should try not to lose time by having to wait for a chain-reaction under your feet or to your side to end. The way I have found to be the best so far is as follows: Move one square to the right and drill down until you reach a green block on top of a brown block. Move back to the centre column, go down to collect the first clock and move both to the left and down so you can pick up the second clock soon, too. After that, move straight down until you're standing on top of a big yellow block where you should start drilling to the right and down leading you to the third clock. Move down until you reach another X-block, move one square to the right, pick up the clock, move one more square to the right and pick up another clock. Now you should position yourself under the other clock and start drilling downwards so you catch the item on your way down. The rest of the level is pretty simple as you only have to drill down as long as you have a normal block beneath yourself and just alternate a single column when reaching an X-block. __________ Hong Kong:| Difficulty: 3/5 Time to beat: 0'22''00 (Taizo) 0'23''00 (Susumu) 0'23''00 (Anna) 0'25''00 (Puchi) 0'25''00 (Holinger-Z) Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus: 300 m Reverse difficulty: 5/5 Reverse time to beat: 0'16''00 (Taizo) 0'17''00 (Susumu) 0'17''00 (Anna) 0'19''00 (Puchi) 0'19''00 (Holinger-Z) Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus: 600 m When trying to beat the normal version of Hong Kong even inexperienced players shouldn't have too much of a problem but figuring out the right way to beat the reverse course time can be for anybody. First move one square to the right and drill down until standing next to the two-piece blue block. Destroy it as well as the yellow block left of it (not the one beneath it) and quickly drill down until you've destroyed the single red block (also destroy the yellow block to your right to speed up the next section a bit). This way the first clock you just seemed to pass up on falls directly into your arms without losing any time waiting for the X-blocks to fall prey to a chain-reaction. Now, of course, pick up the second clock, too. From where you picked up the latter one you should drill straight down and destroy the huge blue block to your left instead of the huge yellow block (which can easily happen accidentally) and nab the third clock. Now drill down and under the big X-block start moving to the right until you're to the right of the next guarded goodie. Move right under the single X-block near the big X-block and go deeper and under the clock to make it fall into your arms after a chain reaction. Next work your way down towards the next clock so you can pick it up coming from the right, move left, down, right, down and grab the last clock also by coming from the right and from there just try to drill to the exit as quickly as possible. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Depth 200 m: ~~~~~~~~~~~~ ______ Italy:| Difficulty: 3/5 Time to beat: 0'12''00 (Taizo) 0'14''00 (Susumu) 0'14''00 (Anna) 0'18''00 (Puchi) 0'18''00 (Holinger-Z) Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus: 300 m Reverse difficulty: 5/5 Reverse time to beat: 0'10''00 (Taizo) 0'12''00 (Susumu) 0'12''00 (Anna) 0'16''00 (Puchi) 0'16''00 (Holinger-Z) Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus: 600 m This is by far the best level in Time Attack Driller in my opinion (although it highly resembles a level in the original Mr Driller) as it is really well- designed without any long drilling sections but stuffed with "escalators" made of X-blocks you have to ride down. Since these lifts are easy to find and to reach Italy shouldn't frustrate anybody so anyone can enjoy it. 1 m - 100m: Drill straight down until you can collect the first clock in the first lift. Stay there until the lift comes to a halt, then enter the second lift and repeat this for the third escalator. Once it stops destroy the sole blue block and wait for the next lift to come by your storey to enter it. Repeat this with the next lift after drilling a huge red block and leave it quickly once your next to a big blue block leading to a lift somewhat formed like a can (just show some imagination :p). Right when this ride fades away you have to start drilling downwards as soon as possible so you won't get crushed by an X-block. You have just left behind the first 100 m of Italy. 101 m - 200 m: Move down into the space between the two lifts and quickly nab the one- second-clock, then enter the other escalator. After landing walk to the right to pick up another clock and to fall down to the next lift you have to enter. When leaving this ride you will see a nice construction consisting of a disappearing huge blue block and some red blocks stuck within it now forming a path for you to reach the clock on the far-left. Just don't get too greedy and wait for the next red block to have fallen down before moving on so you don't get crushed. Now let yourself fall down, nab the next item and move to where the big blue block on your left side is. Wait for the X-blocks to lead the way, jump after them and enter the next escalator leading you to another one after a short trip which ALSO leads you to another lift and, guess what, you'll be taken to just another escalator that will finally bring you to the end of the stage. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Depth 300 m: ~~~~~~~~~~~~ ______ Japan:| Difficulty: 3/5 Time to beat: 1'42''00 (Taizo) 1'45''00 (Susumu) 1'45''00 (Anna) 1'51''00 (Puchi) 1'51''00 (Holinger-Z) Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus: 400 m Reverse difficulty: 5/5 Reverse time to beat: 1'20''00 (Taizo) 1'23''00 (Susumu) 1'23''00 (Anna) 1'29''00 (Puchi) 1'29''00 (Holinger-Z) Bonus Miles: Clear Bonus: 700 m So you've finally made it to the icing on the Time Attack cake. Japan is longer and more intricate than any other level and it contains nearly every element of the other courses but it definitely is possible to beat in no time. 1 m - 100m: Drill down until you're standing on top of a big yellow block, move to the right and drill down into the big X-block tube. Move to its left end and get to its bottom where you have to quickly cross two gaps before the crystal blocks disappear. Next you have to get under the right-most lone X-block and drill down until you're standing on the crystal block. Move beneath the other lone X-block and once again move down only stopping when you reach the crystal block. From here you have to move to the right in order to nab the clock, destroy the big blue block and jump into the small metal block-"can" waiting for the next clock to come down before you jump out again. Here you mustn't lose any time as otherwise the single metal block will either crush down on you or block your way. Destroy the red, yellow, green and red block on your way down to the next item and to the end of this stage. 101 m - 200 m: This section now (only the part featuring the crystal blocks) can't be easily described and probably I haven't found out the perfect way by now (or maybe I have but analyzing every possible path here is way too time-consuming and frustrating) but in my opinion you should alternate between column 3 and 4 (counting from the left) until you've made it through the green-yellow- section. Then move right and down to the next clock, destroy the single yellow block and the huge blue block beneath you and the big yellow block covering the second clock of this section in order to nab it. Drill through the blue and the yellow block under your feet, grab the third clock, destroy the yellow block beneath you as well as the blue block and (who would've thought?) pick up the clock near-by. Now drill down before the big yellow block is affected by a chain-reaction until you're standing one row above the next clock (and two columns two the left), move one square to the right and after the blue blocks disappear you can safely grab the clock. Move a bit deeper and you will find the last clock of this stage. 201 m - 300 m: First you simply have to pick up four clocks by following a path of big blocks between them. After that, move on to a big X-block with an opening on the far-right leading you to a small metal block-platform (and a clock) that you have to ride. Then destroy the red block, enter the second lift and repeat for the third lift. The next long section plays a lot like China meaning that you'll encounter small areas surrounded by X-blocks that can be left by using flip- and turn- blocks. In the first are you need to destroy every normal block over and under the two single X-blocks (you may leave alone the green and the blue block on top of the left-most brown block) so you can grab the turn block. To speed up this part a bit you should only destroy the first normal block under an X- block and then a block under the other one before drilling more blocks so both brown blocks start shaking (and thus indicate that they're about to fall down) nearly at the same time. When the area has turned by 90 degrees, destroy the green block beneath you so you don't get crushed. Now destroy the big yellow block and the four differently coloured single blocks near the flip block, to make it reachable, and pick it up. In the next section you should make sure not to drill down too far to the right. Instead move down in the third column (counting from the left) and pick up the crystal. If you don't do it as I told you, you are likely to get stuck next to the single X-block. Now all you have to do to complete Time Attack Driller mode is collecting the flip block and move down to the end of the level (preferably near the centre because of the big blocks there). --------------------------------4.3.2 Records-----------------------------D32 I will only post one record for every level as there is no difference in difficulty for achieving a certain time either in a normal level or in its reverse counterpart. Ok, now I've also played a bit with Taizo and Ataru in Time Attack, so there aren't only times with Susumu here in this section anymore. _______ Amazon:| 0'09''05 (Susumu) 0'05''50 (Taizo) _______ Brazil:| 0'08''65 (Susumu) 0'08''52 (Taizo) 0'07''13 (Ataru) ______ China:| 0'35''40 (Susumu) 0'31''53 (Taizo) 0'33''80 (Ataru) ________ Denmark:| 0'10''10 (Susumu) 0'09''15 (Taizo) ______ Egypt:| 0'14''65 (Susumu) 0'08''69 (Taizo) _______ France:| 0'13''80 (Susumu) 0'11''55 (Taizo) ________ Germany:| 0'15''57 (Susumu) 0'12''53 (Taizo) __________ Hong Kong:| 0'16''03 (Susumu) 0'11''97 (Taizo) ______ Italy:| 0'11''19 (Susumu) 0'09''22 (Taizo) ______ Japan:| 1'14''58 (Susumu) 1'09''13 (Taizo) -----------------------------4.4 Dristone Driller-------------------------DD4 In Dristone Driller (being an exclusive to the European and Japanese versions) you (once again) try to reach the bottom of a randomly-generated cave trying not to run out of air by collecting oxygen tanks. But that's basically all that Dristone Driller has in common with other play modes. A minor difference to other modes is that only Susumu is playable but besides this restriction there are two main unique elements: First of all air is not reduced automatically as time goes by but only when drilling. Drilling through a normal block (no matter what its size may be) costs 1 percentage point of air, drilling through an X-block only costs 5 (1 for every drill at an X-block). The other main element are the Dristones which the mode is named after. These gems either lie around from the start or hide in normal blocks unveiling after you've drilled the right block. Collecting one of these gives you one of various special abilities that can be accessed via the Dristones- menu acting as an inventory (that can hold up to 20 Dristones). Similar to Pressure Driller there is only one way to die which here is running out of air (here meaning to have -1% of air). Being crushed only steals 20 percentage points of air. Running out of air means instant death so no extra lives here. Usually Dristone Driller is played rather slowly and thoughtful. Only move fast if you have to take a path that starts off a chain-reaction. Otherwise plan every drill, wait for all block to fall down and cause chain-reactions and simply chill out. Any miles traversed in this play mode count towards the shopping points. I cannot give a real walkthrough for this mode as both the blocks and the air capsules and Dristones are placed more or less randomly but I wrote down ratings and recommendations for every Dristone and I can help you by telling you what blocks can be found in every stage so you can plan ahead as to what items you should use and which one you should save for later. Note that not every kind of special block listed for a certain stage has to appear every time you play. Also note that drilling the very last stage-end-block when being down to 0% air will not kill you. ------------------------------4.4.1 Walkthrough---------------------------D41 ______ Japan:| Quote: How about a souvenir from Japan? Green Dristones refill your air meter. Red Dristones destroy certain blocks. Yellow Dristones grant Sususmu certain abilities or bonuses. Some Dristones only appear in later levels. E.g. I've only encountered Warp, Stone Search, Air + 1%, Destroy H and Destroy V in China or in later levels and the first level you get for example Destroy 1 and Change X in is France. _______ Blue: | Change B: Change all blocks of one colour to blue. The in-game description should be self-explaining but you should consider that the block colour which is changed to blue is chosen randomly. At least you can be sure that the game will always choose an on screen colour. Just like the Destroy-Dristones (see red gems section below) this item is best used with lots of single blue blocks on screen otherwise it is relatively useless. Special blocks cannot be turned into blue blocks. As the Change-Dristones appear quite frequently you might consider using more than one at the same time to create really big blocks making for some easy chain-reactions. My personal rating: ***OO Change C: Change all blocks of one colour to Crystal blocks. This is just the same as Change B only that it changes blocks to Crystal blocks instead of blue. As the Crystal blocks disappear after a short amount of time you can't use this Dristone to create large blocks but on the other hand you can use it to destroy blocks that are out of your reach. Basically you can regard this item as a random Destroy- Dristone. Just use it whenever there are lots of single or double blocks and you don't want to waste any better Dristones. My personal rating: **OOO and a half Change G: Change all blocks of one colour to green. This is just the same as Change B only that it changes blocks to green blocks instead of blue ones. My personal rating: ***OO Change R: Change all blocks of one colour to red. This is just the same as Change B only that it changes blocks to red blocks instead of blue ones. My personal rating: ***OO Change W: Change all blocks of one colour to white. This is just the same as Change B only that it changes blocks to white blocks instead of blue ones. Just throw this one away as soon as your inventory gets near- full. Like Change X this Dristone might be useful if you want to deploy a Destroy-Dristone of the corresponding colour but otherwise it only makes life harder. Using this item can sometimes provoke unforeseen chain-reactions and generally you want to have as few white blocks as possible as they always fall down all the way and as they can't be destroyed by forming big blocks. Luckily this is the Dristone I've encountered the least so far. My personal rating: *OOOO Change X: Change all blocks of one colour to X-Blocks. This is just the same as Change B only that it changes blocks to X-blocks instead of blue ones. Nearly the mother of all definitions of crap. Who would want to change any blocks to X-Blocks? Might be relatively useful in combination with a Destroy X-Dristone or if you're desperately in need of an X-Block to destroy other brown blocks but in this case you need to be lucky so the right blocks are transformed because otherwise the situation just gets worse. My personal rating: *OOOO Change Y: Change all blocks of one colour to yellow. This is just the same as Change B only that it changes blocks to yellow blocks instead of blue ones. My personal rating: ***OO Warp: Restart the current stage with all Dristones currently held. When you use this mother of all Dristones you are brought back to the beginning of the current level (i.e. to 0 m) keeping all Dristones you had when you used Warp. No matter when you get this Dristone you can consider yourself lucky. Of course you'd be best advised to warp only when resigning which probably only happens in the late game but if you get it early when still having lots of air you can just keep it for later use. Air supply is not refilled when warping but you keep all Yellow-Dristone-effects, even the Max Up-effect. After warping you'll be in back again in rather easy areas with more big blocks, less X-blocks and easy to reach air tanks plus you're probably equipped with lots of useful gems. UPDATE: After playing Dristone Driller for quite some time I've realized that Warp isn't nearly as good as I thought Before: The first few levels are so easy and short that you shouldn't have any problems beating them quickly and later levels rarely provide many air capsules in the first stages but rather in the mid-range-stages and in addition two-colour- stages are found solely in mid-range-stages so warping back to the start without lots of air actually is more dangerous than useful so I change my rating from ***** to: My personal rating: *OOOO (I know: That's really some big change of mind so you're gladly invited to hate-spam me...don't take this too serious, please ^^.) _______ Green: | Air + 1%: Recover 1% Air. Works just like all other Air-Dristones but only refills one percentage point of air (see Air + 5% below for more information). Extremely rare and extremely crappy. My personal rating (and hopefully everyone's rating here): *OOOO Air + 5%: Recover 5% Air. Works like a quarter-air-capsule for the go. What might easily be overlooked is that this gem does not really recover 5 percent of air but 5 percentage points of air meaning that if you've enlarged your air tank to e.g. 120% and then use this Dristone you still only get 5 percentage points back and not 5% of 120 which would be 6 percentage points. Use it only when being dramatically low on air or when your inventory is full and you don't want to waste any other Dristones. My personal rating: **OOO Air + 10%: Recover 10% Air. This is just the same as 2 Air + 5%-Dristones combined into one item. Simply use it in the same situations as the smaller version. My personal rating: ***OO Air + 20%: Recover 20% Air. This is just the same as 4 Air + 5%-Dristones combined into one item. Simply use it in the same situations as the smaller versions. My personal rating: ****O _______ Red: | Destroy 1: Destroy all blocks within a 1 block radius. This destroys all blocks directly around you (a maximum of 8 blocks). Only somewhat useful when being surrounded by lots of blocks and at least one or two of them being an X-block. My personal rating: *OOOO and a half Destroy 2: Destroy all blocks within a 2 block radius. This destroys all blocks within a radius of two blocks around you (a maximum of 24 blocks). Use it like Destroy 1 when being surrounded by lots of single blocks and X-blocks. It's a bit better than Destroy 1 but don't get too excited just yet... My personal rating: **OOO Destroy 3: Destroy all blocks within a 3 block radius. This destroys all blocks being three squares or less near you (a maximum of 48 blocks). The advanced version of Destroy 1 and 2 is way more useful than the smaller versions as it can dispose of a lot more blocks and also over a greater distance. Use it when being surrounded by many blocks, mainly with lots of X-blocks and single blocks. My personal rating: ***OOO Destroy A: Destroy all blocks on screen. Air will be reduced 50%. As the in-game description already says this destroy all blocks currently on screen at the cost of 50% of your air (percent this time, no percentage points). When being down to 0% air you don't lose any air. You'd be advised to use this gem when already being low on air and especially when seeing an air capsule or knowing that one is nearby without having enough air reserves to reach it the usual way. Furthermore you better not waste this on a two-colour stage or on lots of big blocks. My personal rating: ***OO and a half Destroy B: Destroy all blue blocks on screen. As the in-game description already says this item destroys all blue blocks that are visible at the time it is used. While this Dristone might not be too powerful it still is very useful and, luckily, it appears rather often. The best time to use it is when there are lots of blue single blocks on screen but when being in a stage without blue blocks or when you are in direct reach of a big blue block this gem is pretty useless. My personal rating: ***OO Destroy G: Destroy all green blocks on screen. This is just the same as Destroy B only that it affects green blocks instead of blue ones. My personal rating: ***OO Destroy H: Destroy a horizontal row of blocks. This Dristone destroys all blocks in your horizontal row may it be normal blocks or special blocks. The best use for this is when you are in a dead-end made up of X-Blocks but of course you can also use it to reach any Dristones or air tanks located on some X-blocks or to create chain-reactions you couldn't easily start any other way. Unfortunately although this item is rarer than e.g. Destroy B hence you might expect it to be more powerful it actually is less useful. My personal rating: **OOO Destroy R: Destroy all red blocks on screen. This is just the same as Destroy B only that it affects red blocks instead of blue ones. My personal rating: ***OO Destroy V: Destroy a vertical column of blocks. This has the same effect as Destroy with the difference of not destroying the horizontal row you're standing in but the vertical column (who would have thought?) but only the part that you can see at the moment of the use. Not as useless as Destroy H as this item will clear your way through a few rows but also not as useful as the other Destroy-Dristones as it rarely creates any chain-reactions. My personal rating: **OOO and a half Destroy W: Destroy all white blocks on screen. This is just the same as Destroy B only that it affects white blocks instead of blue ones. Since white blocks are a lot rarer than any of the normal blocks this Dristone actually isn't as useful as Destroy B, R, G or Y. My personal rating: **OOO Destroy Y: Destroy all red blocks on screen. This is just the same as Destroy B only that it affects yellow blocks instead of blue ones. My personal rating: ***OO Destroy X: Destroy all X-blocks on screen. This is just the same as Destroy B only that it affects X- blocks instead of blue ones. As X-blocks can get really pesky in higher (or actually lower ^^) stages this is better than any other Destroy-Dristone. My personal rating: ****O _______ Yellow:| 3-Way: Drill in three directions at once. (Duration: 50 turns) This is one of the very best Dristones to be found. When using this item you'll be able to drill not only one block next to you but at the same time the two blocks next to it that are diagonally situated to you using up only one percentage point of air. The effect lasts 50 drilling actions. My personal rating: ****O ______ ______________ |green ||yellow | | || | |______||______________| ______ ______ |red | / \ |green | |red | \O/ |green | | | | | | --> | | Y | | |______| ___X__ |______| |______| __/_\_ |______| |blue ||green ||red | |blue ||green ||red | | || || | | || || | |______||______||______| |______||______||______| ______ ______________ ______________ |green ||yellow | |yellow | | || | | | |______||______________| |______________| |red | O |green | \O/ |green | | |<--Y | | --> Y | | |______| _/_\__ |______| _/_\__ |______| |blue ||green ||red | |green ||red | | || || | | || | |______||______||______| |______||______| Barrier: Survive being crushed by a falling block once. This neat Dristone makes Dristone Driller mode even more relaxed than it already is. Use it the instant you get it and from now on you'll be protected by a shield only wearing off when you're crushed by a block. If you get a second Barrier while still equipped with the first one you can (and should) equip the second one, too, to make the shield last two deaths. My personal rating: ***OO Jump: Able to climb up 2 blocks at once. (Duration: 30 turns) This gives you Puchi's special ability for thirty turns (meaning thirty two-block-climbs). Can sometimes be pretty helpful when having to climb out of an X-block dead-end or when you can reach a big block by climbing up two blocks but most of the time you could very well do without this. Use it when you get it and hope that you can make good use of it. My personal rating: **OOO Max Up: Increase maximum air capacity by 10%. Increases the maximum capacity of your air storage by 10 percentage points (again not percent but percentage points). In the early game this is a nice item to have but the later in the game you get it the less important it is as you probably won't reach the 100% air mark later on not to mention the 110% mark. Note that Max Up does not give you a 10 percentage point boost of air when you use it. Definitely use it the moment you get it as the effect lasts the whole level. My personal rating: Early in the game: **OOO Later in the game: *OOOO Mini-Drill: Reduce Driller size and air consumption by 50%. (Duration: 30 turns) Shrinking Susumu is a nice effect but sadly this Dristone basically is just as good as three Air + 5%-Dristones because the shrunken Susumu simply loses a percentage point of air only every second time he drills for the next thirty drillings. Being crushed still drains 20 percentage points of air. My personal rating: ***OO and a half Speed: Increase movement and drill speed. (Duration: 50 turns) This Dristone lasts 50 drilling actions, moving without drilling doesn't count towards the 50 turns-limit. Actually this is one of the most useless items: This play mode is nearly nothing about speed so you'll rarely ever benefit from this gem. At least it can be used the second you get it so it doesn't stuff your inventory and you don't have to throw it away. My personal rating: *OOOO Stone Search: Locate hidden Dristones. (Duration: 50 turns) When using this item you'll be able to see a sparkle around blocks that contain a hidden Dristone making it a lot easier to concentrate only on getting deeper and destroying blocks granting you a new item instead of maybe looking around for them but just wasting precious air. The effect lasts 50 drilling actions. Use it whenever you're in need of new Dristones. If your still really good on air or when your inventory is full you definitely want to save this precious item. Of course you also shouldn't use it in the two-colours-stages as you'll probably destroy almost every block there anyway automatically. The only downside is the effect's duration limit. My personal rating: ***** Super Barrier: Survive being crushed by falling block three times. Air reduced 50%. This Dristone has the same effect as three Barrier-Dristones have but it decreases your air reserves by 50 percent (real percent this time, no percentage points). When being down to 0% air you don't lose any air. Best used when you're already low on air but are in possession of at least an Air + 10% Dristone or have an air capsule in direct reach as you'll want to refill your oxygen reserve as soon as possible. You might also use this item when being close to 100 % air and being really close to an air capsule in order not to waste the tank. My personal rating: ***OO and a half You can use any yellow Dristone twice to double the duration (or use it thrice to multiply it by three, etc.) --------------------------------4.4.3 Records-----------------------------D43 My record for Tokyo: 2018m This took me about one and a half hours and I could've gone on but sadly I got hit by a block when being down to 16% air although I still had a few green Dristones and a Super Barrier Dristone. Probably I'll try to beat my highscore some day but for now I'm really fed up with Dristone Driller. ^^ ------------------------------4.5 Driller Store---------------------------DD5 In the Driller Store you can invest miles traversed in Mission Driller and Pressure Driller to buy items for use in those two play modes. While these can greatly increase your chance of simply beating a level they hinder you from saving high scores and from obtaining badges. ______________________________ 4.5.1: Mission Driller (D51) :| __________________________________________________________________________ |Barrier 1: |Survive being crushed by a falling |costs 2.000 m-pts | | |block once. | | |_______________|____________________________________|_____________________| |Barrier 2: |Survive being crushed by a falling |costs 4.500 m-pts | | |block twice. | | |_______________|____________________________________|_____________________| |Barrier 3: |Survive being crushed by a falling |costs 6.500 m-pts | | |block 3 times. | | |_______________|____________________________________|_____________________| |Life up 5: |Start the game with 5 lives. |costs 6.500 m-pts | |_______________|____________________________________|_____________________| |Life up 7: |Start the game with 7 lives. |costs 8.500 m-pts | |_______________|____________________________________|_____________________| |Life up 10: |Start the game with 10 lives. |costs 13.500 m-pts | |_______________|____________________________________|_____________________| |Air capsule 5: |Receive 5x additional air for |costs 4.000 m-pts | | |every air capsule collected. | | |_______________|____________________________________|_____________________| |Air capsule 15:|Receive 15x additional air for |costs 6.500 m-pts | | |every air capsule collected. | | |_______________|____________________________________|_____________________| |Air capsule 25:|Receive 25x additional air for |costs 10.000 m-pts | | |every air capsule collected. | | |_______________|____________________________________|_____________________| |Speed up: |Increase movement and drill speed. |costs 12.000 m-pts | |_______________|____________________________________|_____________________| _______________________________ 4.5.2: Pressure Driller (D52) :| __________________________________________________________________________ |Barrier 1: |Survive being crushed by a falling |costs 2.000 m-pts | | |block once. | | |_______________|____________________________________|_____________________| |Barrier 2: |Survive being crushed by a falling |costs 3.000 m-pts | | |block twice. | | |_______________|____________________________________|_____________________| |Barrier 3: |Survive being crushed by a falling |costs 5.500 m-pts | | |block 3 times. | | |_______________|____________________________________|_____________________| |S. fireball 1: |Increase fireball speed. |costs 4.500 m-pts | |_______________|____________________________________|_____________________| |S. fireball 2: |Increase fireball speed even more. |costs 7.000 m-pts | |_______________|____________________________________|_____________________| |S. fireball 3: |Increase fireball speed to maximum. |costs 9.000 m-pts | |_______________|____________________________________|_____________________| |EX. damage 1: |Increase fireball power. |costs 6.000 m-pts | |_______________|____________________________________|_____________________| |EX. Puchi: Beat Japan. Holinger-Z: Beat China. Anna: Beat India. Taizo: Beat Egypt. Ataru: Beat America. Rabbit (Usagi): Beat The Moon with Ataru. (JP/EU-version only) Special levels: -Reverse Time Attack levels: Beat Japan in Time Attack Driller to unlock the mirrored versions of the Time Attack levels with a harder time limit. -Tokyo in Dristone Driller: Beat every level in Dristone Driller. (JP/EU- version only) -South Pole in Mission Driller: Beat every level on the earth in Mission Driller. (JP/EU-version only) -Outer Space in Mission Driller: Beat the level The Moon in Mission Driller. Mr. Driller Badges: Beating a level in Mission Driller without dying once and without using any items will get you a Mr. Driller Badge. Every character gets its own badges and there are different badges for every level in Mission Driller. Actually I don't know if getting all badges unlocks anything or if it just acts as a motivation all by itself without any real reward. I haven't played Mr. Driller DS for too long yet so please grant me some time and eventually I'll find out what's up with the badges. ^^ Update: I guess I just found out that getting badges does absolutely nothing: I just beat America in Mission Driller with Usagi without using any items and without losing a single life, hence I received a badge but as the score I had was lower than my old high score the score wasn't saved under records and the badge isn't shown when selecting the record for America with Usagi. So as there is no possibility to see which badges you already got if your score isn't high enough I definitely doubt that the game keeps track of what badges you have earned so far and that they allow you to unlock anything. Flowers on the Title Screen (counting from the left): 1st flower: Beat every earth level in Mission Driller. 2nd flower: Beat The Moon in Mission Driller. 3rd flower: Beat Japan in Time Attack Driller. 4th flower: Beat Reverse Japan in Time Attack Driller. 5th flower: Beat every level in Dristone Driller. 6th flower: Beat every level in Pressure Driller. 7th flower: Unlock the first six flowers. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5.0 Guide Ending EEE ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ -----------------------------5.1 Version History--------------------------EE1 0.2: Finished on 07/22/2005, 14 KB large Completed parts 0.1 to 3.1, started parts 3.2, 3.3 and 4.0 to 4.5.2. 0.4: Finished on 07/23/2005, 19 KB large Completed sections Game basics (items), Game basics (additional info) and Scoring System. If you have anything to tell me (except for what an idiot I might be or that Germany suxxers!!11!!1 W00t!!!1! or anything similar... ^^) feel free to mail me at [email protected]. ------------------------------5.3 Experimental----------------------------EE3 In some other guides I've seen the author implement the following and I thought "Why not give it a try for your own guides?": If you really like this guide and you think it helped you or entertained you a bit or whatsoever and you feel like rewarding me not only by writing a nice e-mail, feel free to send some money to my paypal account at: [email protected] Of course I don't want to make somebody send me money who doesn't really want to (even if I could, I wouldn't ;) ), but (also of course) I'd appreciate any contribution. Thank you very much for reading this guide and hopefully some more of my stuff on gamefaqs.
