Luffy Who the heck is Luffy? Short bio, written by sigmasonicX: "Monkey D. Luffy is the 17-year-old captain of the Straw Hat Pirates and, as such, is considered the main character of One Piece. When he was young, Luffy was friends with a great pirate named Shanks. Luffy vowed to someday surpass him and become the Pirate King by finding the legendary treasure One Piece, so Shanks gave Luffy his straw hat to hold until he reaches his goal. During this time, he also ate a Devil Fruit called the Gum Gum Fruit which turns his body into rubber, and by the time he started his journey as a pirate he had gained immense physical strength. Luffy is very simple minded and often acts like an idiot, but his determination knows no bounds and there's no stopping him when you hurt one of his friends." For the full bio, and more info than you ever wanted about Luffy, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luffy How do I unlock Luffy? 1-Koma Luffy: Obtained at the start of the game. 2-Koma Luffy: Obtained in Grasslands 4-1. 3-Koma Luffy: Obtained in Grasslands 4-1. 4-Koma Luffy: Obtained in Grasslands 1-4. 5-Koma Luffy: Obtained in Dessert 1-8. 6-Koma Luffy: Obtained in Battleground 1-8. 7-Koma Luffy: Obtained by fighting 300 battles in Story mode. Basic Moves Here's the legend of the different buttons used in combos and moves: B: The B button. Y: The Y button. A: A button, means to jump before pressing the other buttons in the combo. X: The X Button. ->: Press either right or left on the D-Pad (always press towards your opponent). ^: Up on the D-Pad. v: Down on the D-Pad. For the moves, I use the following format: Combo: Combo, and combo/move name. Damage: Amount of damage done by the combo/move. Hits: Number of hits done by the combo/move. Range: Close, medium, long. Notes: Notes on the combo/move, if applicable. Note: The damage done is damage against another Power character, for Knowledge, the damage is 1.5 more effective, and for Laughter, .5 as effective. Note 2: Close range is right next to Luffy, Medium range is 1-2 character spaces away, and far is 3+ character spaces away. Note 3: The names are mine, so some are corny. If you know the official names, send them over, and I'll include them too. Note 4: If you perform an X special with Luffy, and within the next three second perform another, the second costs only half a special energy bar. (Thanks VinceyPie!) 4-Koma Luffy B: Punch Damage: 4 Hits: 1 Range: Close -> B: Stretch Punch Damage: 5 Hits: 1 Range: Medium Notes: Great ring out attack. ^ B: Diagonal Kick Damage: 4 Hits: 1 Range: Medium Notes: Not a very useful attack, but can be used to bug the enemy if he's above you. v B: Belly Bubble Damage: 10 Hits: 1 Range: Close Notes: Good ring out attack. A B: Spin Attack Damage: 2-6 Hits: 1-3 Range: Close Notes: You can do this attack upt o 3 times in the air if you mash the B button. ->-> B: Dive Attack Damage: 10 Hits: 1 Range: Medium Notes: Don't use this at the edge of the level, as you might fall right out. Y: Multi-Punch Damage: 4-12 Hits: 4-12 Range: Close - Medium Notes: With one press of Y, Luffy will hit 4 times, doing 4 damage, but if you mash the Y button, Luffy will hit 12 times, doing 12 damage. Although it can hit an enemy at medium range, it does max damage at close. -> Y: Two Hand Push Damage: 12 Hits: 1 Range: Medium Notes: Nice ring out attack, slightly longer range than the Stretch Punch. ^ Y: Slam Kick Damage: 4/13 Hits: 1 Range: Medium Notes: If you hit the enemy with the first part of the kick when, it'll do 4 damage. However, if you hit the enemy with the shockwave on the way back, it'll do 13 damage. You can use it to knock an enemy to the ledge above you. v Y: Big Belly Bubble Damage: 12 Hits: 1 Range: Close Notes: Slightly better than the (v B) attack. A Y: Stretch Kick Damage: 10 Hits: 1 Range: Medium Notes: Knocks the enemy off a ledge if he's on one. ->-> Y: Super Dive Attack Damage: 12 Hits: 1 Range: Medium Notes: Don't use this at the edge of the level, as you might fly right out. X: Multi Stretch Attack Damage: 26 Hits: 10 Range: Medium Notes: Takes one Special bar. Can be used at medium, but for max damage, use at close range. ^ X: Super Slam Kick Damage: 6-8 Hits: 1 Range: Medium Notes: One of the worst secondary Specials. Stay away from this. If you hit the enemy with the first part, it'll do 6; whereas the second part will do 8. 5-Koma Luffy Because his basic moves are the same, and do the same amount of damage as 4-Koma Luffy, only his specials are detailed here. X: Super Stretch Punch Damage: 27-40 Hits: 1 Range: Medium Notes: If you simply press X, it'll do 27, but if you hold down X, and charge it to the max, it'll do 40. ^ X: Super Stretch Combo Damage: 13-33 Hits: 9-29 Range: Close Notes: A good move if you're close to the top of the level. If you're halfway to the top or above, use this one. Also, as an added bonus, you can hit multiple characters with this one. I guess I should mention that to get the extra hits and damage, you need to hit X multiple times. 6-Koma Luffy Because his basic moves are the same, and do the same amount of damage as 4-Koma Luffy, only his specials are detailed here. X : Twist Punch Damage: 35 Hits: 1 Range: Medium Notes: Great Special, excellent to ring out an enemy. Spam this one. ^ X: Energy Spin Attack Damage: 30 Hits: 1 Range: Close Notes: Getting better... Use this one if you have a strong surge to destroy multiple wall sections at a time. Also nice to ring out. 7-Koma Luffy Because his basic moves are the same, and do the same amount of damage as 4-Koma Luffy, only his specials are detailed here. X : Afro Mach Punch Damage: 22-42 Hits: 4-24 Range: Close Notes: Quick special, but to get max damage, jam the X button. Very good for ringouts. ^ X: Afro Super Punch Damage: 32-48 Hits: 1-9 Range: Close-Medium Notes: Great Special, but takes a little to charge. Once again, jam the X button for those extra hits, it really make the difference. _________ 4. Combos Here is a list of the most useful combos I have found. Note that I won't include every single combination of moves (like B; B, ->B; B, ->B, Y, etc), only the most useful ones. Here's the legend of the different buttons used in combos and moves: B: The B button. Y: The Y button. A: A button, means to jump before pressing the other buttons in the combo. X: The X Button. ->: Press either right or left on the D-Pad (always press towards your opponent). ^: Up on the D-Pad. v: Down on the D-Pad. Basic Combos These are the combos that you can use, regardless of which Luffy you're using. Here's my little combo format: Combo: Combo, and combo/move name. Damage: Amount of damage done by the combo/move. Hits: Number of hits done by the combo/move. Notes: Notes on the combo/move, if applicable. Combo: B, ->B, Y, ->Y Damage: 25 Hits: 7 Notes: The most basic combo at your disposal, use this one for some good damage, and also as a solid ring out combo. Combo: B, ->B, YYY, ->Y Damage: 33 Hits: 15 Notes: The same as the above combo, the main difference being that you don't press Y one, you mash it until you do 12 hits instead of 4. The easiest way to do this is to hit Y once, then press right/left while still jamming Y. This way, even if you don't get all 12 hits, you'll still end the combo cleanly. Combo: B, ^B, YYY, ->Y Damage: 32 Hits: 15 Notes: Although it does a little less than the above combo, this one is slightly better, as it incapacitates the enemy during the (^B) hit, making there less of a chance of him countering your combo. Combo: B, ->B, ->->B Damage: 19 Hits: 3 Notes: Not the best combo, but good if you need some quick damage. Combo: B, ->B, ->->Y Damage: 21 Hits: 3 Notes: Same function as the above combo, but this one does a little more damage. Remember, use this if you need come quick damage. Combo: YYY, ^Y Damage: 25 Hits: 13 Notes: Really nice, easy combo, but if you want the little extra damage, make sure you hit the enemy with the shockwave, not the original kick. Combo: ^B, ^Y Damage: 17 Hits: 2 Notes: Another quick combo, if you need some solid damage, and quick. As with the above combo, make sure you hit the enemy with the shockwave, not the kick. Combo: B, ^B, YYY, ^Y Damage: 25-32 Hits: 7-15 Notes: Great combo, remember to hold up while you're jamming the Y button to finish the comnbo cleanly. If you hit with all 12 Y hits, you'll do 32, if not, you'll do from 25 up. 4-Koma Combos These are the combos that only really work for 4-Koma Luffy. Combo: B, ->B, Y, X Damage: 39 Hits: 16 Notes: This is a great combo that really increases the damage of Luffy's X attack. This should be your main combo when fighting a smaller group of enemies. Be careful using this one when fighting 3 enemies, as you can easily be attacked from behind during any of the attacks. Combo: B, ->B, YYY, X Damage: 47 Hits: 24 Notes: Even better than the above combo, but at the same time it has the same drawbacks. You should actually always aim for this combo over the above as it does extra damage. Combo: B, ^B, Y, X Damage: 38 Hits: 16 Notes: Only slightly less damage than the above combos, but this one has a little advantage over the other ones. The ^B move slightly freezes the enemy, eliminating the chance of a counter attack between attacks. Combo: B, ^B, Y, ^Y, X Damage: 42-51 Hits: 17 Notes: As you can see by the figures, this is 4-Koma's most damaging combo. It does have one little problem, though. If you hit the enemy with the first part of the ^Y kick, it'll do 42 damage instead. Be sure to hit the enemy with the shockwave, not the kick. Combo: B, ^B, Y, ^Y, ^X Damage: 33 Hits: 8 Notes: Not my favorite combo, as I don't really like 4-Koma Luffy's ^X. Use this if you like the up hits over the left/right ones. 5-Koma Combos These are the combos that only work with 5-Koma Luffy. Combo: B, ^B, Y, ^Y, ^X Damage: 58 Hits: 36 Notes: Good combo, but be sure to be close to a wall, or you'll shove the enemy too far away to finish the combo. Don't forget to jam X to get more damage out of the special. Combo: B, ^B, X Damage: 35-48 Hits: 3 Notes: A good combo, as the ^B temporarily freezes the enemy, giving you time to charge up the X special to do max damage. Use this one if you're close to a wall, and you're almost garanteed to get a ring out. Combo: B, ->B, YYY, X Damage: 47-60 Hits: 7 Notes: Another nice combo, but you might be better off just to hit X, and not charge, as the enemy has a few free seconds to blast you while you're charging. 6-Koma Combos These are the combos that only work with 6-Koma Luffy. Combo: B, ^B, X Damage: 43 Hits: 3 Notes: As 6-Koma Luffy's X attack has a slight delay before it actually activates, the ^B attack eliminates any chance that the enemy will counter before you hit 'em hard. Use this one for quick damage, or for ring outs. Combo: B, ->B, YYY, X Damage: 55 Hits: 3 Notes: Great combo, this should be the mainstay of your arsenal with 6-Koma Luffy. This combo is quick, and there's almost no way for the enemy to interrupt you. Like I said, spam this one. Combo: ^B, ^Y, X Damage: 52 Hits: 3 Notes: Another good combo, make sure you hit the enemy with the shockwave, like always, and not the kick, or it'll do slightly less damage. 7-Koma Combos These are the combos that only work with 7-Koma Luffy. Combo: B, ->B, Y, X Damage: 55 Hits: 30 Notes: Excellent combo, that's all there is to it. If you use this combo, then there's should be no one in the game that can take you down. Spam this baby, and make sure that you jam X at the end to get the extra damage. Combo: B, ^B, ^X Damage: 40 Hits: 3 Notes: Once again, the ^X attack takes a little to activate, so the ^B takes the enemy out while it's charging. Good combo for quick damage. _____________ 5. Strategies Luffy, the Ring King Well, you might be thinking, "What the heck is a ring king?" What I mean by ring king is that Luffy is one of the, is not the, best ring out characters in the game. Sure, beams can kock enemies out, but almost every one of Luffy's forms has an excellent special that can make the enemy fly out of the ring. This is the strategy that you should use most, as it's the one that Luffy was really built for. In any of his forms, spam the B, ->B, YYY, ->Y attack, especially if you're anywhere near the edge of the level, and you've got an easy ring-out on your hands. Like I said a little back, each of Luffy's forms has a really nice special that is really good for ringouts. Try to use the B, ->B, YYY, X combo with all the forms (when it applies) to have the easiest time. One last thing I'll add is to team Luffy up with Jotaro (battle), and Saito Hajime (3 Koma Support) to really buff up your ring out efforts. Luffy, the Power House Although he might be more suited to ringing out the enemy, he can still hold his own in a battle of strength. The best way to use him this way is to spam the long combos, and finish them off with an X special. I like to use B, ->B, YYY, X as it's the easiest one to pull off, and it can do a lot of damage, especially at later stages of the game. If you're going for this approach, team up Luffy with with Zoro, or Jotaro. Both are power characters, and are also really strong. I'd take Zoro over Jotaro, as he powers Luffy up, unless you're going with a combo deck. Luffy, the Nature Master With this deck, you team up Luffy, a power character, with a knowledge character, and a laughter character. Unfourtanetly, there's no laughter battle characters in One Piece, so you'll have to bring in some from another franchise. The only downside to this plan is that you have to have a basic knowledge of all the characters and their types before fighting. Luffy, the Friggin' Turtle Defensie tactics rule the game here, use use that R (or down) a lot. Stay away from your opponent, using support characters for most of your attacks, and disabling the enemy even more for max damage. The best team for this deck would be a Zoro help Koma to keep you safe for a little, a Kakashi help Koma (to make you invisible, and safe for a little), and a Kitaooji Satsiki 3 koma support to keep the enemy from attacking. One final addition to this deck would be 6-Koma Jotaro, as his special freezes time for all but you, giving you time to smack the enemy around. ____________________ 6. Powering Luffy Up Luffy can only really be powered up by a few characters, however you can use other characters to power up those, thus powering up Luffy. Luffy can be directly powered up by the following characters: Zoro (Any size) Robin (2-Koma or larger) Usopp (Any size) Now, besides that, remember that Nami and Sanji can power each other up, and Chopper can power up Usopp. Here's my max powering up deck: 1 3 3 4 4 1 5 5 5 5 2 5 5 5 8 2 6 6 7 7 1. 2-Koma Chopper 2. 2-Koma Sanji 3. 2-Koma Usopp 4. 2-Koma Robin 5. 7-Koma Luffy 6. 2-Koma Nami 7. 2-Koma Zoro 8. One Help Koma of your choice If you use the above deck, you only have one battle koma, but you will have a pretty long life bar, and you'll start with 13 special energy bars, 14 if you throw in a help koma in the number 8 slot. Although you may not use the above deck, this still will help you to power up Luffy to get the most out of him and his team. ________ 7.
