you have to dive for it. I will be honest, it took a lot of diving at all times of the day and night to find it but you will need one for the gardener and two more for the winkle pants, so keep on divin'

You don't dive for the Black Onyx. It's found in the Treasure Chest right at the end of the game, before you escape on the ship.

I opened the chest at the end and didn't get the black onyx. it says i need to dig for it but i haven't found it yet.

The treasure chest only gives you a recipe. You must dig for the black onyx. Just keep digging. You can use your L button the the DS to make time go faster.

It's not watermelon, it's guava. That probably didn't help, but you got to go diving.
