orange coral and fishing

Is there a trick to finding the orange coral? I am down to needing to trade the student for the leather shoe design and I can't find the coral to trade for it. Also is there somewhere other than the big rock in the ocean and the area where you get to by canoe to pole fish?

I don't know if you're talking about the river or the lake-type thing but maybe you could try there?
