I don't understand the purpose of this item it depletes you're health when you you use a move so how does that help you

The Life Orb increases the power of all the holder's direct attacks by 30%, but you lose 10% of your pokemon's health every time you use direct attacks. It's not too useful in-game as you can go for long periods of time without healing your pokemon. It's mostly used in competitive battling, where it is much more useful, usually used on Pokemon such as Gengar and Heatran.
