Capcom Announces 3DS Lineup Despite Opinion Portable Gaming Dead

With the launch of Nintendo's 3DS right around the corner, it is no surprise that we are seeing a sudden increase in the number of game announces for the new platform, in fact today's news cycle alone has several major announcements, but none that are quite as exciting as the news from Capcom or quite as disturbing.

According to Capcom Interactive president and COO, Midoori Yuasa, hand-held console gaming is dead. Yuasa recently told the press that the current trend shows gamers are abandoning the traditional hand-held consoles and PC gaming, preferring instead to play casual games on smartphones like Apple's iPhone. The implication is that Capcom is going to break that market wide open, but will it be at the expense of its traditional gaming section?

If this was not confusing enough, Capcom's European COO recently affirmed the company's commitment to advancing the development of in-house titles aimed specifically at the hand-held console market.

Before anyone panics it should be pointed out that Yuasa is the COO of the mobile gaming section of Capcom, and not Capcom itself, so her opinion (however she arrived at it) does not necessarily reflect that of the company. Yuasa was not available for comment when we called to ask her if she was smoking crack, but a Capcom Spokesperson did reassure us that the company was not, in fact, abandoning the hand-held console market.

"We are firmly committed to continued support of all console and PC gaming, as our upcoming release schedule clearly shows. Next month we have a Marvel vs. Capcom 3 title release, and with respect to hand-held gaming we have two new titles for the 3DS coming -- Super Street Fighter 4 and Resident Evil -- and also Okamiden, and there are several new titles currently in progress."

It seems that news of the demise of Capcom's portable gaming efforts is greatly exaggerated, but we will keep an eye on further developments and keep you informed.

The 3DS Lineup

It seems that a Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition and a Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D edition will soon allow us to experience these two franchises like we have never before -- with full 3D game play!

Capcom's critically acclaimed Super Street Fighter IV (oh mate, do I even have to tell you how cool this is?!) is now the ultimate portable 3D fighting game, available as a launch title for the Nintendo 3DS. Packed with 35 playable characters, new modes and features including online/local Wi-Fi multi-player, a collectible Figurine mode where 3DS units automatically battle via Street Pass, a 3D over-the-shoulder camera and customizable Simple and Pro Controls, the console experience is now even better and in the palm of your hands.

I am having a hard time just sitting still in my seat with all this excitement! A new 3D Street Fighter? yeah, that is going to redefine the hand-held fighting game experience to be sure, and considering that it is the only title to utilize the full capabilities of Nintendo's online network at launch, this one is going to be a very hot ticket.

Resident Evil? Oh Yes They Did!

According to the most recent word, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D is set to deliver some relentless zombie-crushing action, with players competing globally for the highest undead body count. Seriously -- you get to compete with the world for the number of undead you kill? Sweet!

Launching this summer but not soon enough, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D will include brand new mission types played out in the settings of Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, and as a major plus, the series' most iconic characters are all fully-realized in stunning 3D.

The title takes full advantage of the Wi-Fi connectivity of the Nintendo 3DS, allowing players from around the world to join forces in co-op game-play, and all we can say at Gaming Update is now! We want it NOW!
