Power Attacks

Power attacks are most effective when you find yourself being attacked by multiple monsters from multiple directions as they can kill, or at least knock back more than one enemy at a time giving you the space to disengage and reorient your attack pattern.

Gold

There is no point hoarding your Gold for more expensive benefits as the game uses a system in which the best goodies are locked behind purchasing the smaller ones.

Class-Specific Abilities

Use your class-specific abilities when you encounter a situation where a regular attack will not accomplish what you need to achieve like blinding an enemy or dodging an attack.

Statues

Make sure you use the statues when you find them as they grant haste, protection, or strength boosts.

Interruption

One way of keeping enemies from hitting you is by interrupting them, this is done by hitting them just before or after they have started their attack animation.

Inventory

You only get a limited amount of inventory space to hold specialty items and ammunition so not using them could mean wasting pickups later on.

Special Attacks

Nearly all the monsters have an audio-visual tell when they are about to use a special attack and they only use it when they are guaranteed to hit you. Knowing what kind of attack is incoming will determine which direction you need to run to avoid it and how far.

Explore

Make a point of exploring all the levels in the dungeons, they almost all have a forked path or two and there is the possibility of finding a forge, side event or stash of gold that can be used to provide temporary or permanent upgrades later on. Remember that once you exit a level you will not be able to return.

Forges

Forges are worth collecting as they upgrade your character for the duration of a single run. To make permanent upgrades to a character you need to use Gold.

Enemies

A good strategy is to focus on taking out the toughest enemies first when you enter a dungeon.

Keep Moving

As you only have one life per playthrough and there is no health regenerative pick-ups you need to keep yourself as healthy as possible and the best way to do this is to keep moving and stay away from enemies.

Patterns

Make a point of learning enemy attack patterns and using that knowledge to your advantage.

Corners

Avoid going into any corners as you will only get yourself trapped if you do.

Health

You gain health by reaching the next level so if you see that you are low on health start looking for the stairs that will take you there.

Hats

Don't worry about collecting hats, they are just cosmetic and give you no abilities whatsoever.
