How do you plant seeds in garden box?

It won't let me plant seeds in the garden box,it says "need seeds from friends" and for that you must connect with Facebook?but I don't have Facebook,don't use it,and I can't get the Game Center to work...is the only way to plant those seed is from friends? I can't carry on with the game because I can't plant the seeds
