Do the villagers come back or die if you let them out of their houses with no fences around them? Aha

In my experience, no, they don't die, but they don't all act the same way either. In some villages, the villagers run away after I open the doors and I never see them again. Other times, they stay around but at a distance, as if they're not trusting me. In other cases, they hang around and some even follow me, as if they're curious about what I'm doing. One has followed me deep down my mine once and almost gave me a heart attack, I just turned around and he's right there, looking straight at me like, hey man, what's happening?
