Can I give my hay day friends gifts such as axes, boards and stuff like that? And if so, how?

There is no gift giving in Hay Day unfortunately. The best way to trade with a friend is to arrange the trade with them outside the game. Agree that you will leave a certain item in your Roadside Shop (traditionally 1 Wheat for 1 Coin) to show that you are ready to trade. When they accept that deal, leave the actual item that you want to give them for whatever fee.
This is the only real way to initiate and carry out a trade in Hay Day.

You can ask your friend to buy the item instantly as you sell it. That's the way how me and my friends trade.
