To get a 'Perfect' and speed everything up in the different sports requires timing, you need to pay attention to the middle line on each boost position and tap as you glide over it.
Gear can be unlocked via gems and special boxes and is not just cosmetic as they will aslo provide your stats with some speed bonuses.
