Whenever a balloon mysteriously appears on your farm tap on it to pop it so you can collect the bonus found inside. The bonus will usually be a few gems.

Consider connecting your social media accounts to the game so you can join a community, doing this will enable you to work at the community farm to get resources to improve your own farm. It will also enable you to buy, sell, and share resources with other players.

Make sure before you log off that you pack your production facilites' queues up so that when you return you have resources to collect.

Unless you want to spend real money so you do not have to wait for things to finish building/growing you need to queue up things and return to the game in a few hours when they will be complete. If you do not do this you will get bored sitting around waiting.
