Where do you put in the codes and should it be in pause mode if anyone can help me I would really appericate it?

Depending on the code. If it's a combination control code (example: X,Y,A,A,R,L) then most of those for the time being you have to do while your at home but do not pause the game. You have to do it while your still playing.
If it's the unlock codes (example: ZZZ1-ZZ1H-QH1-191Z-B1A) go to Townsquare and go to where you can buy and sell pets, press X (it should tell you on the bottom of the screen) enter the code and you unlock whatever it is you want to unlock, you can find codes like these at ign.com.
