It has no effect on the grades. If you want to improve the grades, on each of the chao's life cycles, evolve it into it's second form with stats of at least 100 for one skill type.(for example, Power) If you want to improve stamina, it doesn't matter what you improve for stats...just don't improve any stat significantly over another.
