Question for Shadow the Hedgehog

What, exactly, is a chao? I've seen lots of people talking about them on the site, and on others, but I still have no idea what you're all talking about. Can you help me out here?

Well for one thing if you have Sonic Adventure/2/2Battle you should have seen one and if not, sonic advaced1/2/3, unless this is the first sonic game you've ever played, they are small blue creatures that have yellow highlights on thier hands, feet, and the tips of their heads. They change color and shape when you play the game and give them different things.

In the Cryptic Castle level those little blue baby-like things on the floor where one of the giant lanterns is. Those are choas.
