POLARIUM OVERVIEW [0201] _______________________________________________________________________________ Polarium Advance is a sequel to a DS puzzle game. Polarium Advance is said to be a backward step for Mitchell because it was developed for Game Boy Advance, which is an older handheld console in comparison to DS. The original Polarium was one of the first game released for Nintendo DS and so it is quite popular. Polarium Advance was released in October 2005, but it took 5 months for Nintendo to publish the game in the PAL area. Even worse, the game was originally cancelled by Nintendo for American release because GBA era almost ended and so not many people would buy it. Fortunately, Atlus decided to get the publishing right for this game in America. Therefore in November 2006, exactly 13 months after its original release, Polarium Advance arrived in America. The main feature in Polarium DS is the challenge mode, which is played similar to Tetris where you have to clear out lines as fast as you can using your stylus. Unfortunately, they have to take out the challenge mode for Polarium Advance due to the lack of stylus usage in GBA. However, they managed to cramp in 380+ puzzles into this game, compared to 100 puzzles in the original Polarium. That alone will keep you occupy for at least a full week. However, that is actually NOT the intended way to play this game. The idea of its main stage mode, Daily Polarium, is that you only need to complete one puzzle every day for a year, but who can resist the temptation to do just one more puzzle? ... and then one more... and one more... and so on... You will get addicted to the puzzles before you know it. Mitchell has also added a twist to each puzzle by incorporating two secondary objectives for every single puzzle. After you have completed the puzzle for the first time, the two lightning-shaped symbols will appear on specific tiles. You then need to complete the puzzles by starting in one of these symbols and end in the other. You must also complete this secondary task within the required amount of steps. If you only succeed in one of these tasks, you will only earn a blue star, but if you successfully did both of these, you will complete the puzzle which is marked by a yellow star with green wings on its left and right side. This means you have to play most of the puzzles twice and this makes each puzzle has a definite route to take. This guide does not contain solutions to all of the puzzles, but I have compiled all the solutions to these puzzles here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/gbadvance/game/929333.html There are also a "time attack" mode and a "custom" mode. The game featured an extensive password system where player can retrieve puzzles made by other player without internet connection. This makes transferring custom made puzzles very easy. Just make any puzzles, complete the puzzles in the way that you want (for calculating the minimum steps and starting/ending point), collect the password and message or email the password to your friend. Your friend can then type the password into his/her game and that's it! Your friend should be able to play your creation in "Custom" mode. Custom puzzles made in Polarium DS would also work in Polarium Advance. Overall, this is one of the top puzzle games out there, but did not really success commercially in America due to the unfortunate released timing. So if you have the chance, get this game and your grey matter will thank you for it! _______________________________________________________________________________ III. GETTING STARTED [0301] _______________________________________________________________________________ The main objective of Polarium's puzzle is to clear all lines in the puzzle with one stroke. To clear a line, the color of all the blocks on that line must match with each other (either all white or all black). Your task is to run a cursor through the blocks you want to flip over in order to get the desired color. However, as has been said above, you have to flip everything required in one turn to clear all the lines and complete the puzzle. You have an unlimited amount of retries, so trial and error is the way to go! All the rules and controls will be explained in the Training Mode (the script of the mode can be found below). You cannot play any other modes on a new game before you complete the Training Mode . CONTROLS: --------- A = to choose, to start a line, A once more to flip the tiles. B = to cancel. R = to zoom in and out of the play area. L = the same as A. Start = to pause, to show the line you have previously taken in the level. Select = the same as B. _______________________________________________________________________________ oo-------------------------------oo | The script of the Training Mode | [0311] o---------------------------------o The Training Mode is very helpful in assisting first-time players. The following is the complete script of the Training Mode. Basic Rules ----------- - The explanation for the basic rules of Polarium will begin. (Press Right on the +Control Pad to proceed.) - Using the cursor, the player can move freely around the play area. - There are two types of cursors: the Free Cursor and the Route cursor. - The free cursor can be moved freely in the play area with the +Control Pad. - Press the A Button (or the L Button) to change from Free Cursor to Route Cursor to start a 'brush stroke'. - Move the Route Cursor with the +Control Pad in order to select the tiles in its path. - Press the B Button (or SELECT) in Route Cursor mode to cancel all selected tiles on the route. You will then return to Free Cursor mode. - Press the A Button (or the L Button) in Route Cursor mode to reverse all selected tiles on the route. - When you have one horizontal line of the same color, the black or white tiles in that line will all disappear. - The stage is cleared when you eliminate all the black & white tiles in one try. - You will fail if even one row is left. - The puzzle practice will start when you press Right on the +Control Pad. ** 4 practice puzzles ** Special Tiles ------------- - You cannot move the cursor over the hurdle tiles. - Multi-tiles disappear when the other tiles lined in the same row are all the same color. - A tile above a solid tile will not drop down until that solid tile has disappeared. - The puzzle practice will start when you press Right on the +Control Pad. ** 6 practice puzzles ** Skills ------ - Skillful use of the outer frame, which does not have any black & white tiles, is necessary in order to succeed. - Black & White Elimination is achieved when you alternate black & white horizontal stripes while clearing the stage. - You can use multi-tiles in the same way as you would use the outer frame. - When you reach the solid tile stages, you can also use the space between tiles in the play area in the same way as you would use the outer frame. - The puzzle practice will start when you press Right on the +Control Pad. ** 10 practice puzzles ** Additional Controls ------------------- - You can switch between the Scroll mode and the Overview mode with the R button. - Press START to open the Pause menu. - If you press and hold START in the Stage mode, then the previous route will be displayed. _______________________________________________________________________________ IV. DAILY POLARIUM [0401] _______________________________________________________________________________ This section is all about the "Daily Polarium" mode, which is the "Main mode" of the game if you like. Here are something to note about this mode: - When you first select this mode, you will be asked to select what date you want to start your game at. There will be exactly ONE year of puzzles for you to complete (365 or 366 depending on the year). You can choose any date from 01 January 2000 up to 31 December 2099. - You can attempt any 1 of the 7 unlocked puzzles for any given day. New one will be unlocked once you have finished a puzzle. You can play each puzzle as many time as you like. You need to complete the puzzle at least once before it is unlocked in the Polarium Reference. - The secondary objectives (involving finishing the puzzle under a specific amount of steps and start/end your line at a specific point) will appear on the puzzle on the second time you enter into the puzzle. If you successfully complete either one of the secondary objectives (even before it was shown on the puzzle), you will receive a blue star on top of the puzzle date. However, if you managed to complete both of the secondary objectives, you will get a yellow star with green wings stretching to its left and right on top of the puzzle date. - You will always get a Multi Tiles (Group 6) puzzle on any Saturday (marked blue in the calendar). It will be in ascending order following the Polarium Reference index, so on the first Saturday, you will get Puzzle number one in Group 6, and so on. - You will always get a Solid Tiles (Group 7) puzzle on any Sunday (marked red in the calendar). It will be in ascending order following the Polarium Reference index, so on the first Saturday, you will get Puzzle number one in Group 7, and so on. _______________________________________________________________________________ oo-------------------------------oo | How to Reference Daily Polarium | [0411] o---------------------------------o The order of the puzzles you would get in Daily Polarium is pre-determined. It is NOT random. The following list should help you to cross-reference when searching for solution to a specific puzzle. Note that this list has assumed that you choose a Thursday as your starting day. If for example you choose a Monday to start yours, you need to skip the Saturday and Sunday puzzles on this list and look at the puzzles on the next week. When you get to Saturday (marked blue in the calendar), go back to the previous week and look at Saturday and Sunday puzzles for your cross-reference, then for Monday week 2 on your game, continue to the next day where you left off on this list. In other words, in this example, you decided to start Daily Polarium on Monday. So for your game, your Monday W1 = Thursday W1, Tuesday W1 = Friday W1, Wednesday W = Monday W2, Thursday W1 = Tuesday W2, Friday W1 = Wednesday W2, Saturday W1 = Saturday W1, Sunday W1 = Sunday W1, Monday W2 = Thursday W2, and so on (Note: W = week). If you don't know what week you are on now, go to Polarium Reference, then look at Group 6 or 7 and find out how many puzzles you have unlocked. The number of puzzles you have unlocked in Group 6 or 7 is the week number you are currently on in Daily Polarium. So for example, you have unlocked 33 puzzles in Group 6; this means you are currently on Week 33 in Daily Polarium. So... here's the cross-reference list: o-----------------------------------------------------------------------------o Week 1 [0421] ------ Thursday - Group 8 Set 1 Friday - Group 8 Set 2 Saturday - Group 6 Set 1 Sunday - MISCELLANEOUS [1001] _______________________________________________________________________________ oo------------------------------------------------------oo | Differences Between Polarium Advance and Polarium DS | [1011] o--------------------------------------------------------o - Polarium Advance has more types of tile than Polarium DS. Polarium Advance has Multi Tiles, Solid Tiles and Hurdle Tiles. - Polarium DS has a challenge mode, where there are constant flows of white and black tiles line you need to clear (just like Tetris, but clearing white and black tiles using stylus). Polarium Advance does not have challenge mode. - Polarium Advance has 384 (or 390) puzzles, whereas Polarium DS only has 100 puzzles. Furthermore, each puzzle in Polarium Advance has two secondary objectives. There is no secondary objective for puzzles in Polarium DS. - Passwords of custom made puzzles from Polarium DS would work in Polarium Advance. However, passwords of custom made puzzles from Polarium Advance would NOT work in Polarium DS. - Polarium DS was first released on 2 December 2004 in Japan, whereas Polarium Advance was first released on 13 October 2005 in Japan. _______________________________________________________________________________ oo------------------oo | List of Glitches | [1021] o--------------------o - None that I know of.
