1.What is the purpose of mail?

When you are trading Pokemon attach a letter with it. That is the purpose. If you beat it 50 times in a row then you get a silver shield. If you beat it 100 times you get a gold shield. Hope this helps. Have fun.

But whenever I try to trade pokemon it says "A Pokemon holding mail can not leave your party!"

1) To send messages to your friends (don't ask why, I have no idea)

2) A Gold Statue for your Secret Base.

get secret power from either the guy standing at the tree off of fiery path to fallarbor town, or at one of the booths in slateport city (look for tm43)

I can answer the second question. Mail doesn't really have a purpose juust have fun with it you can trade withyour friends while a Pokemon is holding mail to send them a message. But there is a girl in Mauville that will give you a coin case if you give her wailmer mail. That is all Hope This Helps

To communicate with your friends. You send it with a Pokemon when you trade it and the reciever can open it at any time. When you beat the Battle tower (depending on what lvl you are on) If you beat it say 100 battles on the lvl 100 level then you get anice little plaque to put in your secret base. But it's very immpressive if you have one!
