How Can I Put in Cheat codes in Pokemon Emerald?

Ok, so I know many questions similar to this have been asked, but I just didn't know if it mattered on the emulator (I'm using RetroGBA)
I don't know if I am supposed to have the master code in different file, or in the same one as the normal cheat code. I have tried both and no matter what I try, it just says invalid format.
If anyone has any help/tips for this, it would be greatly appreciated.
