welcome to my Gym Guide for Pokemon Gold/Silver. Here's how it's going to
work: First, I'll draw a map of the gym (to scale, except the first one, in
which XX represents one tile in-game) and highlight the trainers with numbers,
then list their Pokemon, types and attacks like this:

Trainer (number)
****************

(Trainer Name and type)

Pokemon ~> Pokemon Lv. [XX]
           [Type 1]
           [Type 2]
           Move 1
           Move 2
           Move 3
           Move 4

Also, here are the Gym types and recommended Pokemon for them. I'll explain
why later on.

Gym 1 - Flying - Pidgey/ Ratatta
Gym 2 - Bug - Cyndaquil/ Pidgey/ Geodude
Gym 3 - Normal - Any Fighting type
Gym 4 - Ghost - Stantler
Gym 5 - Fighting - Pidgey/ Stantler
Gym 6 - Steel - Cyndaquil/ Magmar
Gym 7 - Water/ Ice - Any Electric type
Gym 8 - Dragon - Swinub (Or other Ice Beam-learning Pokemon)/ Dratini

 ---- ----

Well, this Gym's Trainers are all blocking the way to Falkner, so you have to
battle both of them. Falkner himself is brutal for Cyndaquil or Chikorita, but
Totodile should be OK. Your best bet if Totodile is NOT your starter is to use
a Pidgey because it negates the Mud-Slap and can deal decent amounts of damage
to Pidgey and Pidgeotto.

Bugsy really isn't tough for anyone except Chikorita. DON'T even THINK of
using Chikorita against Bugsy, especially against Scyther, because Fury Cutter
will destroy it. What you should use is either Cyndaquil, Geodude or Pidgey.

Now you're at the third Gym, which is shaped like a Clefairy (didn't notice
that, did you?) and is filled with Normal types. It can be wiped out by pretty
much any team, but a fighting type can OWN them. Whitney's Miltank should
be hit with fighting-type attacks because otherwise, it will heal with Milk
Drink. It's REALLY annoying, believe me.

This Gym has only Ghost/Poison types, so if you have a Stantler (caught just
south of Ecruteak City) you will destroy them. However, Avoid Normal and
Fighting type moves totally (you could try using a Ditto; I had HUGE success
with it).

To unlock this, you must first climb the Lighthouse, talk to Jasmine, get the
SECRETPOTION from the Cianwood Pharmacy and give it to her. Then she'll
return to the gym. She is easy with Cyndaquil or any Fire type (Burned Tower
has Magmar) or Ground Types, which have a 2x super-effective effect on her
Pokemon. There's nobody else in this GYm, for whatever reason.

There is a guy blocking the entrance to the Gym when you first get into
Mahogany Town, who leaves only after you go to Lake of Rage, kill/capture the
Shiny Red Gyarados and help Lance clear out the Team Rocket lair. This place
has icy floor tiles which keep you sliding, unable to change direction until
you land on a metal tile. Everyone in here is an Ice/Water type trainer, so if
you want, use Cyndaquil. It could take a while against Seel, though. Pryce's
Piloswine has a Blizzard attack which will massacre your Pokemon, so get a
Fighting type and defeat it quickly.

* [] means a tile where you can change direction. SS means an ice tile which
you don't need to follow to get to the Gym Leader. ^^, <<, >> and vv are ice
tiles on which you need to follow the direction to get to the Gym Leader.*

OK, here we are at the last Gym Badge. It's really not hard if you teach a
Water-type in your roster Ice Beam. Alternatively, catch a Dratini from the
cave behind the Gym and train it to a high level. I would recommend the first
option. By the way, the lava is going to be shown as ##. Stairs are ++ for
going up, and == for going down. [] is a moveable boulder and HH is a hole.
The arrows on the first floor indicate the way the rocks should be pushed. And
on the ground floor, the // is where the rocks will land.

Congratulations! You have beaten the 8 Johto Gym Leaders and are well on the
way to the Pokemon League! Just run Clair's errand and earn yourself the
Rising Badge. Good luck with that and the *other* Gym Leaders ahead, which
I'm afraid I can't help with... They aren't from Johto, after all...
