The guide this time around is a little unknown and underrated Gameboy game called "Penguin Wars". This game combines the aspects of hot potato, air hockey and dodge ball. This game uses animals as the characters, or in this case, the "contestants". Without further ado, here is the guide. 2) CONTROLS Control Pad--Moves the contestant left or right. Also used for choosing a contestant from the "Char. Select" screen. A Button--Picks up ball, then throws it towards the opponent. Also, if held down, it will charge up and a super-fast ball is thrown when released. Start Button--Starts the game. Also pauses the game. 3) THE RULES OF PENGUIN WARS Before you start throwing balls at your opponent, there are a few rules of the game that are needed to be learned: THE SET--Each game, or "set", consists of up to three games max. The object is to win two out of the three games to win the set. In case of a tie game, look under the rule "TIE GAME". THE PLAYING FIELD--Each contestant starts each game with five balls on his/her end of the playing field. THe object of the game is to win by having more balls on your opponent's side that balls on your side or have all ten balls on your opponent's side. Each game of the set lasts 1 minute, or 60 xeconds. After 30 seconds has elasped, a character will appear in the center of the playing field, obstructing the direction of the balls thrown. See rule "ROADBLOCKS" for more info. UPON WINNING--If you win the game, you'll earn points for the number of balls on the opponent's side if the 60 seconds is up. If you win by having all ten balls on the opponent's side, you'll earn points for the amount of time remaining on the clock at the point of victory, plus a "Perfect" bonus for getting all ten balls on the other side. ROADBLOCKS--There are three different character that will obstruct the direction of the balls thrown. These three are called the spinner, the gravitator and the little devil. When the ball is thrown at the spinner, the spinner will re-direct the ball toward any direction, including either you or your opponent. The gravitator will suck the ball towards itself and redirect the ball elsewhere. The little devil will deflect any ball thrown at it back towards the player who threw it in the first place. TIE GAME--In the event of a game ending in a tie, that particular game will begin again. It'll keep on going until a winner is determined. BONUS GAME--If the contestant sweeps the set with all ten balls on the opponent's side in both games, the winner will participate in a bonus game, in which he/she throws as many balls toward the other side as possible in a 30 second timeframe. bonus poiuts are rewarded for each ball successfully thrown. END OF GAME--game ends when you lose a set. 4) THE CONTESTANTS There are a total of five characters, or "contestants", that participate in the game--the penguin, the rabbit, the cow, the rat and the bat. To get a general idea of what each contestant is like, use this key: SUMMARY--The contestant's background, along with strenghts and weaknesses. SPEED--The contestant's walking speed. the higher it is, the better he/she can dodge balls thrown by the opponent. STRENTGH--The throwing ability of the contestant. the higher it is, the harder the ball is thrown. CHARGE--The ability to throw chraged balls. The higher it is, the faster it is thrown. RECOVERY--The stamina used to recover from being stunned by being hitted by an thrown ball. The higher it is, the faster the contestant recovers from the stun. RATINGS KEY *--Poor **--Bad ***--Good ****--Excellent *****--The best there is. 4.1) PENGUIN SUMMARY--The penguin, as he is the star of the game, is the best overall contestant. The flighless bird from the South Pole good in all attributes, which makes him perfect for beginners. His speed is good, as well as his strenght, charge and recovery attributes. Like I Said before, the penguin is the best choice for players new to this game SPEED--*** STRENGHT--*** CHARGE--*** RECOVERY--*** 4.2) RABBIT SUMMARY--The rabbit is usually the first opponent you face in a one-player game. His strenght is the best, with his recovery speed superb as well. Unfortunatly, his recovery is bad, as rabbits are easy prey. Finally, his charge is the weakest of the five, as an opponent can easily slip pass a charged throw made my the rabbit. Overall, the rabbit is a very althetic contestant. SPEED--**** STRENGHT--***** CHARGE--* RECOVERY--** 4.3) COW SUMMARY--The cow is usually the second opponent you face, first if you're playing as the rabbit. First off, her strenght is the second worst of the five, aminly because of her hooves. Second off, because she is the largest contestant of the five, she is definatly the slowest one of them all. However, what she lacks in speed and strenght, she more than makes up for in the other two attribute. Her charge is the second-best in the game. What really benefits the cow is her super-fast recovery speed. Basically once you stun her, she doesn't stay stunned for long. Overall, the Cow is the one with the most staying power and the hardest charge. Use her if you want to prevent the opponent from getting any perfect games off of you. SPEED--* STRENGHT--** CHARGE--**** RECOVERY--***** 4.4) RAT SUMMARY--The rat is usually the third contestant you face in the game. Amazingly enough, the rat is really fast, which really helps in getting perfect games a lot faster that the other characters. His charge is the best of them all, which is enough to force the opponent to wave the white flag. However, all that speed and charging power comes at a deadly price. His recovery is, by far, the worst of the five contestants. Basically, if you're facing the rat as an opponent, constantly stunning him will ensure victory on your part. Unfortunatly, the rat's strenght is sub-par as well, which means the rats best line of defense is to throw chraged balls at his oppenent. Overall, the rat is best used by experts or those who want a challenge. SPEED--***** STRENGHT--* CHARGE--**** RECOVERY--* 4.5) BAT SUMMARY--The bat is usually the fourth and final opponent you face in the game. He has the second-best speed, as he is a mammal that can fly. His strenght is excellent, which might throw some opponents off-guard. However, his charge is bad, as the bat has wings instead of hands. Also, his recovery is better than the rat's, but not by much. Overall, the bat is speedy and has a tough charge. SPEED--**** STRENGHT--***** CHARGE--** RECOVERY--** 5) GENERAL TIPS AND HIMTS Because the ultimate goal of the game is to get the highest score possible, it is best if you follow these tips to help you win: KNOW THY CONTESTANT'S STRENGHTS--Depending on your playing style, choose the best character that suits your style. For example, beginners should play as the penguin, while players who prefer raw power play as the rabbit, while players who want a quick pace play as the rat. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE STUNNED OPPONENT--Usually, when you stun an opponent with a ball, you can throw a few more balls towards his side before he recovers. This is especially true with the rat. THE KNOCK-OUT PUNCH--The charged ball is powerful because it can keep an opponent stuned for a little bit longer. However, you're open for a clobbering yourself when you charge throw the ball, as it takes 1-3 seconds for it to comepletly charge up. Use it carefully. GET OUT OF THE STUN--In the second go-around of the game, the opponents get much tougher, especially the rat. If you get stunned by a charged ball, immediatly head of the other side of your end, as if left unchecked, the opponent will get an easy perfect game out of this. GET OUT OF THE WAY--When one of the three characters gets in the middle of the playing field, time your throw to where it does not get in the way of the character. This is especially true with the little devil. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE BONUS GAME--If you end up in the bonus game, immediatly pick up and throw the balls toward the other end as quuckly as possible. The more balls successfully thrown, the higher your score wil be. 6) FAQS Q: When was "Penguin Wars" released? Basically, it is called a "stage select" code, but actually is a difficulty level select, which determines how tough the opponents are at the begining of the game. To use the cheat, go the Char. Select screen, the hold down the Select and B buttons, then press the A button. If the code is enetered correctly, a number appears. You can choose a number from 1-to-10, with 1 being the defaut difficulty and 10 being the toughest one. 8) CONTACT INFORMATION If you have any questions about this guide or my other guide, that being the GBC Dragon Warrior I FAQ/Walkthrough, drop me a line at the following e-mail address: [email protected] 9) LEGAL INFORMATION This FAQ is the copyright (c) 2007 of Robert Johnson.
