INTRODUCTION ~~ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- So you bought Barbie Game Girl. Well done! We enjoyed it very much. OK, that's a lie. We didn't. But it's not THAT bad really, so we figured we'd write this FAQ for it since at the time of writing, there isn't a complete guide for it on GameFAQs. Someone out there might need help with it, after all. Or you might just be reading this out of curiosity. Either way, we'll get on with it now. Have fun! - Lisanne & Martin G -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ~~ 2. CONTROLS ~~ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - HUMAN BARBIE - -Right, left Moves Barbie across the screen in the required direction. -Down Makes Barbie crouch (used when dodging shots from enemies). -A To jump. Be aware that Barbie can jump a terribly long way, and remember to allow for it. -B To throw a projectile missile (that thing that looks like a tiny blob) across the screen. Be aware that you'll pick these up during the levels occasionally, but they will be limited. If you don't have one, you can't shoot one. -Start Apart from pausing the game, it shows you the flowers you've got, your points, remaining throwing blob things, lives, and that type of thing. - MERMAID BARBIE - -Up, down, left, right The D-pad buttons make Barbie swim in the direction you wish. -A This makes Barbie swim faster for a very brief while. There's no limit to how much you may press this - she doesn't seem to run out of stamina at all. -B You throw a blob thing. Beware, the blob thing follows a different path from the one human Barbie throws, and it's also slower. Use this when timing when to shoot one. -Start Same as Human Barbie levels, it pauses the game and shows your stats. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ~~ 3. WALKTHROUGH ~~ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - Level 1: THE MALL OF DEATH - Oh noes! Barbie's local shopping mall is a deathtrap! And she has a date with Ken coming up! Only you can help her survive running the gauntlet in the mall to buy some fetching new shoes. There will be a variety of obstacles thrown in your path, but relax - we have the answers you need. Ironically, you start right in front of a shoeshop. Instead of just walking through the door though, Barbie decides she wants to go to a different, identical shoeshop. Maybe this one doesn't stock her size. Walk to the right, taking good care to avoid the water drops that are shot from the ground via jumping. If a drop of water does hit you, you'll lose a health point, so take care to avoid them. Straight after the first water drop, you can pick up your first throwing missile (it looks like a small pixel lying stationary in the middle of the screen). Pick it up. Leap over the second drop of water to pick up your first flower. You may be wondering what this does - unfortunately, whether by design or a sense of realism, it does absolutely nothing whatsoever and serves no purpose in the game. Grab it anyway, because maybe it'll match her new shoes. Proceed with jumping over things until you reach three gift packages piled on the ground. They're just to the right of a ledge with a big heart over it. If you shoot missiles at these gifts, they will turn into a diamond, which will allow you to pick up that heart. You'll need two missiles, although at this point you'll only have one, so head a little to the right and pick up that bag you'll see to get hold of another. Once you've got the heart, the screen gets starry, and Barbie gets a new outfit: sporty Barbie!! Do try to keep her safe now, because she runs and jumps much faster than her alter ego. Run forward until you see a bouncing furby immediately in front of a sheer drop into an abyss. If you touch the furby while jumping, the furby will disappear. If you touch it while jogging, you get hurt and lose your outfit, and your new bonus speed along with it. Throw a missile at it, and it'll freeze for a couple of seconds (this is kind of useless, since it can take a couple of seconds for the Gameboy to register your movements in this game). Whichever method you try, please mind the abyss or you'll have to start over again. Next, you'll see a few floating platforms in the middle of the screen. You're going to need to jump between those, while avoiding falling into the water fountain below. As if that wasn't enough to deal with, torrential waterfalls will randomly drop from the ceiling onto the mall below. If you get hit by one of these, you'll lose a point of health. Keep heading to the right, taking care to avoid any stray water, until you reach the end of the fountain. When you get there, you'll see a round object with the letter "B" written on it. Grab it, and it will attach itself to you as a shield. If you press the B button, Barbie will throw it across the screen, which will kill any bouncing furbies along with it. This will come in very handy, so make sure you pick it up! You'll encounter several obstacles while crossing the screen now, so avoid them using the methods already outlined (jumping in other words). When you see a Toy Shop at the other end of the screen, make sure you touch the lightening thing floating in the air a little to the left - this will make Barbie get changed again, and like last time, she can now run and jump at a faster speed. Also, this will make her invunerable to furbies and water drops, so go for it! It's only a temporary effect, but by the time it runs out, so long as you're fast enough, she'll be at the end of the level. There's a big B here and the shoeshop, which represents your goal. Now you get to play some very elementary memory card game. It's not fun, but whether you win or not you've finished the level, and Barbie now has new shoes. Oh, the trials and tribulations of femininity today. - Level 2: BARBIE GOES FOR A LITTLE SWIM - Remember how Barbie had legs in the last level? Well for some random unknown reason, she's now a mermaid. This may or may not be due to someone being heavily influenced by the writer who came up with the concept behind 1960s children's TV series, "The Herbs" (ask your parents). We simply don't know. The bad part is that Barbie's awfully slow underwater. The good part is that you can solve that via mashing the A button repeatedly. Unfortunately, despite (or maybe because) of its unbearable slowlness, this level is also really really simple, which is probably just as well since your concentration is bound to wane while playing it. Simply swim to the right of the screen, making sure to avoid the various enemies that appear. These are in the form of some kind of ape-like creature, and the large fish with teeth that look a little bit like tuna. The groups of tiny fishies are just for decoration - they can't hurt you, but they look pretty and we're grateful for that. Along your path you will find two Captain Barbie shields: one simply floating there. The other one, surrounded by boxes, will be available after you shoot two missiles at said boxes. Take a second to notice that the missiles are slower underwater, and proceed. You will find no obstacles or challenges whatsoever until the end of the level, at which point you'll be back playing the memory game. Yes, it really was that simple. - Level 3: WE'RE ACTUALLY NOT SURE - We're in some sort of diner, we can see from the Coke bottles and the coffee cups (or a vending machine). Why it's giant and why everything's floating are two matters that currently escape me, but it could well be some kind of parallel universe, or perhaps a dream. Either that or it's been a hard day at the office. Walk to the right, avoiding the sugar and the floating alien (yes really). Fire a couple of missiles at the three packages here in order to grab the heart, to change into the Sporty Barbie outfit. As you advance, you'll see a plastic cup with eyes which jumps up and down and shoots straws at you (again, really). This is considered a tough enemy within the game's universe, wherever it is set, so be careful about when you cross, and remember that you can crouch to dodge its shots when needed. Continue to the right avoiding all the obstacles until you reach a pool of water, which will hurt you if you land in it. This is a section comprised of floating platforms (as you got through in the mall level), so you should have no trouble crossing by now. You'll see three floating packages ahead of you. Shoot three or four missiles at them (simply press B while you're on them), and some more platforms will appear. Jump over any flying straws that come your way while crossing these towards the right hand side, also taking care to aviod the flying furby (or at least touching it while somorsaulting - remember that trick?). This can be a little tricky, but the timing is predictable so it shouldn't be tough to get the hang of it (although you'll probably sacrifice some health while doing so). A few more steps to the right after this section, and you've finished the mystery alien and beverage level. - Level 4: BARBIE'S A MERMAID AGAIN - YAY more mermaid Barbie. This time there's a very small maze to solve, which isn't too difficult so it shouldn't actually pose any problems. As soon as you start, go to the right if you want to grab some stars, then backtrack to the start and swim directly up. Go through the only open path avoiding the aliens and take the Captain Barbie shield. Go right, then down, and eventually you'll reach the entrance to a cave. It doesn't take long. When you enter the cave, you'll discover that you were here to save Mr. and Mrs. Crab from the giant jellyfish you'll see floating around. You must drop three missiles on the lock (indicated by an arrow at the very start) for it to open, so do it. The jellyfish is a little slower than you, and it'll follow you around, so just place yourself more or less under the King's throne and shoot away. When you do free the crabs, the level's over, and you're awarded with a pearl necklace from the king as thanks. Ho hum. - Level 5: LITERALLY A NIGHTMARE - This entire level seems to be some kind of nightmare. One of those ones where you imagine you've just woken up, and start going through your morning routine, only to find that the entire room is quite literally out to get you. Actually, that's never happened to me, but it IS happening to Barbie so you'll need to steer her out of it. Actually though, this level's one of the easiest in the game. Just hop onto the alphabet cubes and simply walk along them until you can jump off to the ground again. Then, just walk to the right, jumping over balls and avoiding the flying enemy that keeps coming for you. Once you see the wall, shoot three missiles at the door. The balls stop falling when you do this, and then the level's finished, and the nightmare is over. - Level 6: SOME KIND OF JUKEBOX - I know you won't understand this until you see it, but you have to jump from musical note to musical note in order to beat the jukebox and clear the level (this will make sense once you see the opening screen of the level). In this first section, just jump from one note to the other, upwards, so that you ascend to the higher level. Now go to the left and do the same to get to the third level. If you fall, simply start again. Don't pay attention to the spinning discs, just make it to the right of the screen carefully avoiding the flying enemies. When you do get to the right end, you'll see a black disc low enough for you to jump onto. Do so. Now the whole deal is jumping from one disc to the other, getting higher and higher. Be aware that the CDs will fall after you step on them, so be quick and start again if you need to. Once you get to the higher level, pass in front of the piano keys. Ignore the packages and keep jumping from disc to disc, until you get to a door. It's not hard at all to be honest. Next, there's a huge jukebox. There are three coins. Simply avoid the dropping notes while you make the coins spin. In order for the coins to spin very quickly, place Barbie over them and press A repeatedly. Get the three coins spinning at the same time, and you've finished the game. Well done! And that's all there is to it. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ~~ 4. CUTSCENE TRANSCRIPT ~~ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- -Intro: Barbie is standing in front of a brick building marked "MALL". She looks like Jane Fonda in the very early 80s. -Ending sequence: Barbie, wearing a dress that's SO clearly pink, walks. She finds Ken. They dance. You wipe a tear from your eye out of pride. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ~~ 5. SPECIAL "THANKYOU VERY MUCH" SECTION ~~ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Thankyou very much from Mart to: -Pachelbel This whole FAQ was written while listening exclusively to Pachelbel's "Canon in D major", possibly the only song in the planet that manages to calm me down when I'm thinking about Barbie and this game. -My Internet provider While I am writing this my Internet connection is deader than a certain flower girl in a certain FF. This total and absolute isolation towards the rest of the world made me actually get to play Barbie and write this document about it. Thank you connection, I would have never made it this far without your shocking lack of cooperation. Lisa's Insult Of The Day: "Insipid vacuous bovine"
