How To Run The Gegenpressing Tactic

Formation: In order to run the Gegenpressing Tactic, you will need to have your Players in advanced positions at almost all times. Because of this, outside of your striker, you will need between 1-3 AM Positions so you can place them as close as possible, which will see opposing teams under constant pressure. The ideal formations to orchestrate this are a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-1-2-2-1, but a 4-4-1-1, 4-1-4-1 or a 4-4-2 can also work if (and only if) your wide midfielders can push opposing teams further up the pitch.

Team: As far as your team is concerned, you will need to choose "Higher" or "Slightly Higher" for your Defensive Line as this will see your Players always close to the opposition. Playing an "Offside Trap" is also a must, along with choosing "More" or "Much More" for Closing Down with your entire team. Finally, the you must have an aggressive mentality of either "Attacking", "Control" or "Counter", as well as have "Fluid" or "Very Fluid" in regards to your Team Shape. In addition to all of this, playing with a "Higher" Tempo is also helpful for this scheme.

Players: In regards to your players, you will need all of your Wide Midfielders, Central Midfielders, AMs and Strikers to have their Closing Down set to the maximum. In addition to this, your Wide Midfielders, AMs and Strikers will all need to be set to "Mark Tightly" in order to apply pressure to opposing players whenever their is a change of possession.

Opposition: There isn't much you can control when it comes to your opposing as far as the Gegenpressing Tactic is concerned; however, creating Pressing Traps by Pressing Key Positions on the other teams should help you isolate the ball all the better.

Technical Attributes: If one Technical Attribute is key for all of your Players to have in order to run this tactic, it has to be that they all must be Good Passers. On top of this, your players having great First Touch and Technique will help this tactic come together nicely. Finally, all of you players must have at least decent Tackling Skills.

Mental Attributes: In addition to the Technical Attributes above, your Players must also have great Mental Attributes in the areas of Work Rate, Teamwork and Determination. Actually, these are all the more key for your players to have, even more so than the individual Technical Attributes.

Physical Attributes: On top of the various Technical and Mental Attributes that your Players must have in order to properly run the Gegenpressing Tactic, they will also need high values in Acceleration, Pace and Stamina. This style of play is very quick and uptempo, and requiring loads of running to be executed. If your players aren't in shape, they won't be able to keep up with the pace this tactic needs.

Training: Since your Players need to be in tip top shape to run this tactic, you should always mix in as much fitness training as you can, including during Preseason, Winter Breaks and International Fixture Breaks. This should keep you players playing to the Best of their ability, which you will need for as strenuous of a tactic as this.

Staff: In regards to your Staff, all of your members must be firm believers in Closing Down opponents "Aggressively". And this goes especially for your Assistant Managers during the matches you have. If all of your Staff doesn't have this same mindset, you will have trouble orchestrating the Gegenpressing Tactic at all times.

Club: Finally, picking a club that has the type of Players (physically and mentally) and Coaches (strategically) needed to run this given tactic is a must. Some teams just aren't made out for the Gegenpressing Tactic, especially a squad that doesn't have the same set of philosophies listed above. Playing defensively and winning the ball back as quickly as possible is what the Gegenpressing Tactic is all about, so you need a team full of Players and Coaches ready to do this very thing.
