Don't Forget to Search for Collectibles and Secrets

Most of the time in Doom Eternal you will be surrounded by chaos and your main concern will be to stay alive as you deal with the enemies that are intent on killing you. While you are preoccupied doing this it is easy to run on to see what is next and lose access to the area you were just in resulting in losing out on the potential collectibles and secrets that are hidden in that level.

Although it is easy enough to replay levels it is recommended that you maximise your time whenever there is a quiet period in a level by using it to search for collectibles and secrets. Keep an eye out for cracks in walls that are not lit up green and whenever you come across something you are unable to reach take a look at your map to see the area it is in and work out a way to get to it. Remember that collectibles and secrets are not only found in levels but also the 'Fortress of Doom' hub. The video below will show you where all the collectibles and secrets can be found in the first three missions of Doom Eternal.

Keep Moving During Combat

If you want to stay alive and not end up as dead as the corpses scattered everywhere around you it is essential that you keep moving during combat. Always look to use the poles that are littered around to vault over enemies and the blue energy strips to launch you up in the air or across an arena. It is also important to keep an eye out and collect the various power-ups, such as armour, ammo, and extra health which you will come across as you progress through the game as you will need them to help keep you alive.

How to get the Flame Belch

In Doom Eternal there is a shoulder-mounted flamethrower called the Flame Belch which you can unlock and equip that will let you get amour by burning it off of enemies. The Flame Belch is an important weapon to have and you will unlock it after completing the game's opening mission, Hell on Earth.

Make sure when you have the Flame Belch you always use it before you perform a Glory or Chainswaw kill. Both the Glory Kill, which gets you health and the Chainsaw kill, which gets you ammo, are both insta-kills. So by always using the Flame Belch on an enemy before you perform each move you will ensure your armour never runs out.

Search for Extra Lives

Extra Lives in Doom Eternal are incredibly valuable as they enable you to resurrect your character after they have been killed in combat so they can continue their progress without having to return to the last checkpoint and repeat a particular part of the game.

It is important that you do not waste the Extra Lives you find, try to save them for when you really need them. Like in Slayer Gates. You will be able to find Extra Lives scattered throughout the game and they will be in the from of a helmet icon. Many of these Extra Lives you will have to climb or explore the environment very carefully in order to find walls that can be demolished.

Once an Extra Life has been used it becomes irretrievably lost, you will not be able to get it back even if you return to the last checkpoint. The video below will show you the locations of all 51 Extra Lives in Doom Eternal.

Explore the Fortress of Doom

The Fortress of Doom is a space station used by the Doom Slayer as his personal headquarters and in Doom Eternal it acts as a hub level filled with useful collectibles. You will be able to open doors in the space station to unlock things like weapon and suit upgrades by using Sentinel Batteries.

In the basement of the Fortress of Doom is a training grounds that you can use for practice fights. It is called the Demon Prison. Make sure you explore the Fortress of Doom as there are features there that you can take advantage of that will help you in the levels.

How to Upgrade Weapons

Whenever you clear an arena, challenge, or Slayer Gate in Doom Eternal you will earn Weapon Points, there are 10 Weapon Points to earn in each of the levels.

On the the top right of your screen is a bar that denotes opportunities to earn Weapon Points. The red segments of the bar represent normal combat encounters, the purple segments represent Slayer Gates, the pink segments represent secret encounters, and the yellow segments represent boss encounters. Each weapon in Doom Eternal has multiple different mods that it can be equipped with and each one serves a specific purpose. These weapon mods can be upgraded to improve their performance using Weapon Points.

You can obtain the actual weapon mods themselves during the game by interacting with the floating robots you encounter who are carrying them. To acquire a new weapon mod for a weapon of your choosing you need to walk up to these robots and interact with them. It is recommended that you spend the Weapon Points you earn immediately to upgrade your weapons, to be able to upgrade your weapons you simply have to pause the game.

How to unlock the Unmakyr

The Unmakyr is a laser weapon that is almost as powerful as the BFG 9000. To unlock the Unamkyr you need six Empyrean keys, you will be able to find these within the first few missions, behind the Slayer Gates.

Inside are combat challenge that will earn you the Empyrean Keys that will release the Unmakyr in the 'Fortress of Doom' hub. In total there are 6 Empyrean Keys and they can only be found by completing the challenges in the combat arenas. Empyrean Keys can be collected as you progress through the game but the easiest way to get them is to play through a bit to level up and then backtrack because some of the fights in the combat arenas involve hordes of high level enemies.

The Unmakyr uses the same ammo type as the BFG 9000 and is worthwhile getting as it is a weapon that is capable of decimating even the toughest enemies in seconds. Below is a video showing you the location of the 6 Slayer Gates you need to find.
