When playing on defense it is advised that you only keep three players at the line of skirmish. The reason for this is that it reduces the amount of players who will likely get knocked down once the skirmish starts on the opponent's turn. It also opens up opportunities for further blocks while playing on defense if you have additional players at least two spaces back from the line of skirmish.

A good strategy to protect your players is to place them in spots diagonally-adjacent to their teammates as doing so will increase the number of squares currently being guarded by your team. Employing this tactic aslo makes it more difficult for opposing players to get close without risking a few Dodge rolls.

As soon as the game gives you the option of increasing your number of re-rolls per half you should take advantage and start investing as much income as you can reasonably afford into doing so. Remember though that you can only re-roll once per turn so you need to use it wisely.

Make sure when you move into enemy territory or fortify your position on defense your team stays close together as much as possible and nobody is left out on their own. If however you are forced to spread out you need to make sure you bring everyone back together as quickly as possible.

Resist the temptation to skip the Tutorial if you are unfamiliar with the game. The Tutorial will allow you o begin playing a simplified version of the game that gradually becomes more complex.
