Introduction [INTD] | ---------------------------- Welcome to my FAQ for Dragon, Fly! The purpose of this guide is to provide you with all the information you would need in order to quickly and easily succeed at the mobile game. The game is on both IOS and Android systems, but this FAQ will focus on the Android version. Level advancement should be similar between platforms, though. As of the writing of this FAQ, the game version is 5.3. The game is similar to Tiny Wings, but I feel that this game does the entire mechanic much better. There are a total of xx levels in the game, and with three achievements per level, that makes for a total of xxx achievements. The description on the Google Play Store summarizes the game pretty well (quoted for the most part, but fixed some grammar errors). As a newly hatched dragon pup, you are still too young to fly. That, however, is not going to stop you from embarking on your very first adventure. The realms are full of curvy hills. Slide along them, time your touches with precision to build momentum, and take off into the sky. Be quick, though! Dragon mum is anxious about your whereabouts and has reached out to end you journey and bring you back to the nest. Features: -Super simple: One touch controls. Pick up and play. -Super complex: Advanced 2D physics engine makes this a game that requires strategy, skill, and dexterity to master. -Super smooth: 60 frames per second on medium level devices. -Many quests to complete. Get your dragon to the highest level! -New beautiful landscapes generated fresh for you every day. -Online worldwide leaderboards. I couldn’t find very much information about this game elsewhere online, so I took it into my own hands to write a guide about a game into which I have sunk many hours. I am by no means the best at the time; I haven’t even managed to break onto the global leaderboards. I will say, however, that my high score was the highest for both my local city and zip code. I made this guide based on my experience and testing of the system. I used the free version exclusively to make this as accessible to everyone as possible. Also, I’m extremely cheap, and I couldn’t justify spending money on a game I could play for free, even if it takes soooo much longer to play it for free. If you notice something is wrong or is missing, please feel free to let me know (see the “Corrections/Contributions” section). This is my third FAQ, and it seems I only like to write about super obscure elements or games in my spare time. I hope you find it useful! -------------------------------------- | IV. Levels and Achievements [LACH] | -------------------------------------- A. Getting Started [GSTD] --------------------------- First of all, you need a smart phone running at least Android 1.6 that can access the Google Play store. Search the store for Dragon, Fly! so you can install it and begin playing. If you have even the most basic smart phone, it should still be able to handle the game; it is not that CPU intensive. If it simply can’t handle it, there are some settings you can change, and I’ll review them a little later. B. Playing Basics [PBCS] -------------------------- When you start the game, you are introduced to the basic mechanics through some introductory slides as well as a tutorial. You touch the screen to make your dragon dive into the ground. Timed well, you can hit the downward slope of a hill smoothly, and if you lift your finger when the dragon is at the bottom of the hill, your dragon will get a huge speed boost. This is called a “swoosh” and is the main element of the game. The more swooshes that you get, the farther you are able to get, and the higher your score becomes. Three consecutive swooshes gives you a conditional upgrade, called Fire Mode. This gives you a large point modifier for the entirety of the time you remain in Fire Mode. To keep Fire Mode active, you have to keep swooshing. The first mistake will remove Fire Mode, and you will have to get three swooshes in a row to reactive it. If you get enough height, you can see the clouds. If you get even more, you can go into or above them. This is called a SkyFly, and these give you bonus points. A good high score will result from a long time in Fire Mode with many SkyFlys. The game is divided into separate levels, or realms. They are all of similar lengths, but the number and types of hills in each level are different. They get progressively harder to use for good swooshes consistently. Obviously, the first realm is completely uniform and is easily completable. The increase in challenge is slight, and as you get closer to double digit realms, you really start to notice the difficulty increase. It is a challenging game, but it is not impossible. As advertised, it does take skill and dexterity to play the game well. There are obtainable items in many of the realms; these are Diamonds and Speed Vials. Diamonds are the in-game currency, and collecting these will allow you to purchase additional levels (if you are playing the free version) or specialty Vials from the shop. Diamonds look like little pink diamonds. Not hard to find, and with enough, you can purchase Vials that give you bonuses. These bonuses aren’t permanent and only last for three adventures, but they can make getting achievements significantly easier. The other item is Speed Vials. Speed Vials give you a boost of speed when obtained, and if you get a swoosh off a hill filled with these, you can go super far and high. This is a double-edged sword because it also makes it harder to time your next swoosh at the end of the fall. Diamonds give you some extra points, while Speed Vials do not. At the end of each realm is a large downhill slope with exactly thirty Diamonds at the bottom. Based on how fast you are going and with a little bit of luck, you can get all thirty. Otherwise, your dragon will bounce and miss several. There isn’t a lot to be done about that but keep going. Your dragon is then shot high into the air, and the next realm starts to load. Each successive realm is a little harder, and now you just rinse and repeat until you get caught. I haven’t exactly worked out the algorithm that makes the different realms, and I don’t think it would do anyone any good to know it. You get a general idea of how the realms form and adapt naturally, which is kind of hard to teach and put into words. Dragon mum will eventually catch you regardless of how well you fly. She will gradually get faster and faster until she is faster than even your best swooshes. You just have to go as far as you can. It is possible to get caught on the first realm, but you have to actively try to fail. You get better as you play, so don’t worry. I believe in you! C. Menu Options [MOPT] ------------------------ From the main menu, there are eight different options. In the top right, you can connect your game to Facebook to annoy your friends. I never did this, and I don’t recommend doing it. No one likes people who do that, sorry. The middle is a large play symbol. Hit this to start playing. It will show your current progress first, and then it will take you to the start of Realm 1. On the bottom, there is a row of six options: Help, Leaderboards, Potions Shop, Unlock, Settings, and Achievements. Help will allow you to look at the introductory slides and tutorial again if you need it. Sometimes a refresher is helpful. Leaderboards show the top times based on varying geographical sizes. It will first show your Highest Rank Achieved with a title (i.e. Duke) and an associated percentage of your score (i.e. Best 10%). It will tell you what you score you need to get to the next rank, but these are always changing as more people play the game and score well. The geographical areas are Global, Country, City, and Postal Code. The Greatest in the World (from Global) have insanely high scores, and I simply don’t understand how. They are much, much better than me. They won’t load if you have turned off your phone location services, though, so be aware. Next, the Potions Shop is where you can spend your hard-earned Diamonds. Cheaper the more | | | | quests you have already | | | | completed. | ------------------------------------------------------------------- Diamond Potions are useful for achievements where you have to collect a large amount of Diamonds in one go. Fire and Stealth Potions are good to use when going for high scores. Speed Potions are supposed to have the same effect, but I don’t like using them. They make it that much harder to control your descent, which can cost you your Fire Mode. Quest Potions can cost from 0 Diamonds (meaning you have completed your current level) to 11000 Diamonds (meaning you haven’t done anything). They are a relatively recent addition and seem like a cheap way to do things. I was able to complete the game completely before they were introduced, so it is completely possible. You can also buy Diamonds with real money, but again, I’m super cheap. Alternatively, you can complete free offers, such as installing and playing a different game, to get some free Diamonds. I have done some of these, and they are legitimate. The games can start to clunk up and cause your phone to go slower if you do it too much, even if you uninstall them, so be careful. Unlock tries to get you to buy the full game if you are on the free version. I honestly don’t know what it does if you have the paid game. I also don’t think it is super important either. Settings allow you to tinker with the, well, setting. You can turn off music, background images, and unnecessary graphics to make the game run faster if your phone can’t handle it. I haven’t had a problem with it overall, so I left mine alone. To check, you can turn on Display Framerate (FPS), and if you see a large dip or disparity between realms or something, you can change some of the other settings to fix it. You can also reset your game progress, which will take you back to the very beginning. I’ve done this from boredom. Next, I’ll discuss the real reason for this FAQ, the achievements. D. Achievements [ACHM] ------------------------ Achievements will show your current level, dragon, and the achievements you have remaining until you unlock the next level. There are three achievements per level, and unlock new levels give you bonuses. For example, you start out with a ten second head start on Dragon Mum, but with a few levels, you can get more time and even a score boost! The table below shows all of the dragon levels, their respective bonuses (10s being a 10 second head start; 10% being a 10% increase to your score), the achievements for that level, and finally your reward for completing those achievements. Achievements are not retro- or proactive. You have to complete the task as it is assigned, which can be frustrating when you are trying to go through the game quickly with enough skill. The main frustrating element of the game is that on the free version, when you complete the three achievements, you have to collect 2000 Diamonds in order to purchase the next level. I refuse to spend any real money or bother my Facebook friends over a game like this, but I’m cheap and stubborn. This part of the games starts after you get the XXX Dragon, so if you want to play this game for free, be prepared for a large amount of Diamond farming and grinding. You really just have to do them; they are simple one line commands. If you are having serious trouble, put down the game and try again tomorrow. The realms are regenerated daily, so maybe the new hills will work in your favor. You can also use Potions to help you. If you absolutely must, I guess you could use the Quest Potion, but what is the point of the game if you aren’t actually playing it and completing the challenges? To each his own, I won’t judge. As of my writing, I was unable to complete all three of the Gold Lvl11 challenges. I bought the Quest Potion to get me past the 150,000 high score achievement. My best run was within 400 points of getting it. The most frustrating part for me was the Gold Lvl12 challenges. I know for a fact I had done all of them on previous levels, but having to do them again was just annoying. Gold Lvl13 is the final and highest level, so if you manage to get there, stock up on potions, and have some really good luck, you can set a very nice high score. I’m not going to lie, by the time I got to that point, I had played myself out of wanting to set a new high score. Maybe in the future when I stop hating this game. :) E.Strategies [STRG] --------------------- I’ve touched on some general strategies earlier, but I’ll do my best to list them here in a little bit more detail. Swooshing is the main component of the game. If you do nothing but have solid swooshes, you will automatically have a fantastic score because your momentum is never halted. As a bonus, you will be in Fire Mode for the entire adventure. With that being said, you need to accept that that is incredibly difficult and next to impossible. Maximizing swooshes is paramount, but there is more you can do. It is better to play it safe with swooshes than to try to go for one more hill. Your dragon’s natural diving can be deceiving, so the dragon might land on a rising hill instead of a falling one, ruining your swoosh. I have found it is better to dive earlier as opposed to later, so even if it might take more swooshes to finish a realm, I can still maintain my streak. Swooshes and SkyFlys give you points as well, remember, so you can get extra points this way. My personal method of diving is a little different than what the game suggests you do. I do several quick touches while my dragon is flying in the air, and during the dive I hold for longer. The quick touches allow for much finer control that just holding the screen, hoping you timed it right. Getting Fire Mode before leaving a realm is huge; you have a good 10 seconds or so of FREE Fire Mode bonus points. Maintaining it on the first impact of the realm can be difficult, but then your momentum is back to normal and you can adjust for the next swoosh. I get Diamonds whenever I can, especially when I can swoosh through them. Free points are important. Don’t go out of your way and loose a swoosh just for Diamonds if you are going for a high score. That being said, you can plan your swooshes a little bit based on where the Diamonds are located. This takes a little bit of planning from playing the day’s realms several times. The only downside is that they change every day, so you have to make new strategies daily. I try to avoid Speed Vials when possible because they make it harder to judge your landing location, and I have lost many swooshes to those dreaded blue potions. It can be done, and they can be of great use, especially if you hit a hill poorly and lose all of your speed. That being said, as you get better, you can adjust and make great use of those Speed Vials. They can really help you with the Realm goals, such as getting to Realm 11. That one took me one or two tries. Buying Potions from the Shop is also a great way to increase your score. You just have to be able to front the cost of the Potions, whether that be from grinding Diamonds to purchasing them in game. Most importantly, practice will get you a higher score. As you play the game more and more, you learn how to judge distances, speeds, risks, and rewards faster and more accurately. Even when I’m grinding for Diamonds and not trying to go far, I can still consistently get to Realm 8. All you have to do is take the time to figure out what works best for you, and then perfect your skills. F. Ranks [RNKS] ----------------- After you complete all of the achievements and beat all of the levels, all that is left for you to do is to get a super high score. My current best is 149549 (Gold Lvl10), so try and see if you can beat that. My current best did not use the highest level dragon; it did use the potions. It still put me in the top 1% and the highest score in my area. The farthest I have ever gotten is Realm 12, so if you manage to get past that, props to you. The most Diamonds I have collected was 436 in a single game, which is crazy, but that was a different run than my high score. As I mentioned earlier, the exact score it takes to reach a certain rank fluctuates. As a result, this table is just for you reference to see how you compare to other ranked individuals.
