The best strategy is to first focus on increasing the stats of your Health so your chances of surviving improve, when that has reached an acceptable value move onto upgrading your Strength so you are able to defeat enemies quicker.

Although you can jump off ledges to reach the next area without using a teleporter it will cost you health. To reach the next area without a teleporter tap off the tiles into open air or use 'catapult' fluids.

A good strategy to minimise unpleasant surprises in unknown areas is to move one tile at a time.
