You can perfrom a tight turn on a fixed spot without going anywhere if you press the brake and accelerate at the same time. This maneouvre is particularly useful in battle modes.
When Lakitu has retrieved you from falling into an abyss you can get a boost if you press the acceleration at the exact instant you hit the turf.
If you get a Tanooki tail while you are underwater you will be able to get a big boost by using it as a propeller.

Not much is known as of right now about Mario Kart 3D. Nintendo is trying not to reveal to much information about any 3DS games this year, so they won't build up to much hype.
