Cheats, Tips and Strategy

Walk, Don't Run

It is more beneficial to walk than it is to run. The reason being is that you are expend more energy the faster you walk and you have to remember that when you are on the trail you never know how much food you will need while moving between camps so it is in your best interests to conserve what you have. The frozen region in particular you will find scarce on food.

Eat Often

One of the most important things you need to do is to make sure you keep your stamina up. If you neglect to do this you will soon find that your character will be fainting from exhaustion and you will be forced to either pay to restore stamina or lie on the ground and have other travellers loot the goods you have collected from you. You can help prevent this from happening by always making sure sure you gather any form of food you see on the trail. A particularly good source of food is meat as it restores more stamina than nut, berries and apples.

Clothing

Try to wear as much clothing as you possibly can as all clothing helps to ward of fatigue and each item offers a benefit you can take advantage of. Headgear will increase the number of stamina hearts you have while shirts, pants and skirts will provide more health and also provide hooks that will enable you to attach tools to so you have less to carry in your pack.

Don't Overpack

Although it is important that you pack some extra food in case you need it is also equally important that you do not squeeze too many things into your backback as doing so will run the risk of it starting to shake and exploding. When you then retrieve your items you will discover some will be missing.

Gathering

When you reach the point of the game where you are able to craft items you need to start to gathering wisely by getting into the habit of only picking up materials you know will be useful in crafting things you can sell during the trading time. To do this effeciently will require you getting to know your recipes. Also make sure you grab any food you see as it will fetch a decent price.

Animal Skin Scraps

Animal skin scraps can be found all along the trail and they make up the base of most of your clothing items. This make it important that you pick them up whenever you see them as they will not only keep your character warm but also enable you to craft more valuable items which you can then sell.

Animal Pelts and Logs

Getting animal pelts will require a tool such as slingshot so you can hunt rabbits and to get logs you will need an axe. Obtaining tools is always useful as they can always be used for crafting clothing and creating decorative items which you can trade.

Replace Items

A yellow warning sign will appear in the top corner when an item starts to wear out. Make a note of this and be ready to replace it at the next camp or two. If you neglect doing so the next warning will be red one and your energy will start to drain a lot faster and your food will not last as long. Also, the hearts will turn to red when this happens. If you have spare cash to invest in the game you can buy clothing items that never wear out which means you do not have to worry about ever replacing it.

Resource Management

The most important thing in order to survive and thrive in The Trail is to practice good resource management. A good strategy is whenever you come to a campsite is to check the status of your clothing to see if any of the garments are wearing thin and if so look to craft those items first. If you can't craft an item for whatever reason you can always check to see if other players are selling them at trading time. Craft as many slingshots and axes as you can, keep the tools that are better than those you currently have for your journey and sell the others.
