Detective Pikachu is one of the newest Pokemon Games, the last of its kind for the Nintendo 3DS. The game was first released in Japan on February 3, 2016 under the name of Birth of a New Duo; however, this version of the game only contained about one third of the total content that would later come. The full version of the game was released worldwide on March 23, 2018 under its name of Detective Pikachu, including all nine chapters this time around. Detective Pikachu begins two months after the strange disappearance of Harry Goodman, the great detective investigating the production of the chemical known as R, with Tim Goodman, the son of Harry, arriving in Ryme City. Tim has arrived to uncover what ultimately happened to his father after the car accident he was in, as Harry's body was never discovered. With the help of Mike Baker at the Baker Detective Agency, Tim looks to follow in his father's shoes by finding the very man that inspired him so.

Directly after arriving in Ryme City, Tim witnesses an Aipom suddenly steal the Necklace of a young Girl. While trying to stop the Aipom, Tim will be accosted by the same Aipom as well. During said assault, Tim will ultimately meet Pikachu, the same that use to be the former partner of Harry Goodman. Unfortunately, Pikachu lost its memory after the same accident that saw Harry suddenly disappear, not remember practically anything that the two discovered as a team.

After their paths cross, Tim and Pikachu will agree to stop Aipom together. After eventually finding the Necklace that Aipom stole from the Little Girl, this new duo will remain a team for the remainder of the game, growing an especially strong friendship in the process. Case by case, Tim and Pikachu will work together, hoping to eventually discover what happened to Harry Goodman. In the process of doing so, however, the team will stumble upon the case revolving around the Substance known as R, a scheme so diabolical and dangerous that not even Harry had the chance to solve without finding trouble.
