Question for Assassin's Creed Origins

Quest Level 31 Aya: Blade of the Goddess. Aya and Bayek are accompanying Cleopatra back to Alexandria by ship. They run into Ptolomy's ships. I can't sink the largest ship. I looked at a walkthrough video and it showed a clue to use the catapult on the screen which the person in the video used to sink that ship. I couldn't get that instruction when I tried it and I believe you can't defeat the ship without being able to use it. Can you help me?

Yes, you are correct.
I don't believe you can defeat the large ship without using catapults.
Technically you seem to be sending a flare or, possibly, a fireball at the target letting the rest of the fleet know wher4e to aim.

Aim by holding down [R1] or [RB], while [Square] or [X] will fire the catapult when aiming. Note that the catapult, while dealing massive damage, has a minimum operational range and takes a while to recharge, so use it wisely and against distant opponents.

The trick is to keep your distance by almost exclusively using the catapults.
(Unfortunately, in the final battle where you fight 2 of these ships, catapults are unavailable.)
