Introduction ~= (AFS1) ================================================================= --------------------------------------------------------------------- Hey, welcome, you've stumbled across an in-depth FAQ for the Arena section of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. This guide contains information on gambling, fighting, and exploring the Imperial City's Arena. More information will be added after I finish the first version. This is the first FAQ/Guide I've written. I decided to write about on the arena because it is a very exciting portion of the massive game. If you find a mistake or think I should add something in this guide, please email me at [email protected]. If I change something due to feedback, I will give credit in the credits section. Almost no emails were answered in the year of '07, sorry. The account was deactivated and I was too lazy to check it. And I will no longer delay your adventure in the Imperial City Arena! _______________________________________________________________________________ --------------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= =~ II. About the Arena ~= (AFS2) ================================================================= --------------------------------------------------------------------- The Imperial City Arena stands grand and mighty in the Arena District of the Imperial City. It has been there since the days of Gaiden Shinji, the first blademaster of the Arena. There are two ways to enjoy the Arena, winning money as a gambler, or fame and money as a fighter. Anyone can enter as a combatant. You have to beat 27 opponents in 22 matches to become the grand champion. To participate either way, go to the arena from 9 am. to 9 pm. anyday. _______________________________________________________________________________ --------------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= =~ III. Gambling ~= (AFS3) ================================================================= --------------------------------------------------------------------- If you wish to gamble in the arena speak to Hundolin, who is the gatekeeper. This little guy will be happy to accept your bet for either the Blue or Yellow team for 25, 50, or 100 gold. Once you've made your bet enter the door to your right to find yourself on a balcony overlooking the arena itself. Both combatants are randomly equipped and a invisible wall is blocking your way down into the arena. That means you cannot affect the battle directly. But your luck attribute does help, the more luck you have, the more hitpoints the team member you bet on receives. Good luck! _______________________________________________________________________________ --------------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= =~ IV. Fighting ~= (AFS4) ================================================================= --------------------------------------------------------------------- To become a combatant, use the left hand door to enter the Arena Bloodworks. Talk to the blademaster, Owyn, who is in the east side of the north room. He makes you a "pit dog" and also gives you the choice of light or heavy raiment. You can exchange this raiment anytime by getting a new one from the cabinet beside Owyn. There are five of each and they regenerate once-a-day. The raiment is a full body armor, so you cannot wear boots, greaves, a cuirass, gauntlets, or bracers of your own. But you can equip your own helmet, shield, weapon, or even your enchanted jewelry. If you remove your raiment during a match you are disqualified and be forced to fight the match again. If you try this twice you are expelled from the Arena for good (Ouch!). Once it's between 9am to 9pm in-game, and you currently do not hold any bets with the gatekeeper, you are able to begin a match. Venture into the bloodworks and speak with Owyn. After asking for a match, he'll give you the first of many encouraging words and open the gate for you. ------- Hints ------- This is a subsection for hints on general arena battles. Yeah, I know, it's weak right now. I'm so lazy. Hint #1 1. Buy an invisibility spell that you can use and has fair amount of time Ex. Shadow Shape (30sec. invisibility) from Ita Rienus at Bravil Mages Guild 2. Start an arena match and equip your best weapon 3. Cast the invis. spell upon yourself before entering battle 4. Sneak around the dumbfounded opponent 5. Use your power attack while in sneak mode and you will get a bonus damage 6. Back away and cast the spell oncemore 7. Rinse and repeat until dead _______________________________________________________________________________ --------------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= =~ V. The Matches: Pit Dog ~= (AFS5) ================================================================= --------------------------------------------------------------------- At the end of the passage go through the door and you'll find yourself behind a gate. The mysterious announcer will speak a few words before dropping the gates. Once the bars have lowered, a circular arena will be available infront of you. The yellow team's starting area is directly across from you. All of the yellow team's combatants as a pit dog are one level above you. Your first match is a Wood Elf. She has a longsword and a light shield and helmet. Take her down easily and report back to Owyn for 50 gold. Tell him you are ready oncemore and you will then fight an Imperial. He has a heavier shield and helmet and is the hardest of your pit dog matches. After you kill him report back to Owyn for 50 gold again. Your next match is a Argonian archer, melee fighters charge him and take him down. Talk to Owyn once again and you'll get 100 gold and a promotion to Brawler. _______________________________________________________________________________ --------------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= =~ VI. The Matches: Brawler ~= (AFS6) ================================================================= --------------------------------------------------------------------- You are now a brawler. Not much of a better name, but you're getting there. Your first match is a Nord with an axe two-levels above you. You'll receive 100 gold after defeating him. Your second match is two Wood Elf twin sisters, who are each a level above you. One has a bow while the other has a claymore. The bowman (or bowwoman) holds a Chameleon potion, so don't be suprised when she disappears on you. The best tactic would be to hide until the potion ends. Report back to Owyn for another 100 gold. Your last match as a brawler is an axe-wielding Khajiit two levels above your own. Defeat him and get back to Owyn for 150 gold and a new rank, Bloodletter. _______________________________________________________________________________ --------------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= =~ VII. The Matches: Bloodletter ~= (AFS7) ================================================================= --------------------------------------------------------------------- Let's hope you won't be letting any blood. Anyway, your first match is a Redguard, who uses either a sword or a mace. Defeat him and return to Owyn for 150 gold. In the second match you will encounter a female Breton equipping a shortsword, heavy armor, and also some Endurance and Speed potions at hand Your last opponent is a Dark Elf that uses a bow from long range. Charge him to force a switch to melee, then easily take him down. Make your way down to Owyn for 200 gold and promotion to Myrmidon. _______________________________________________________________________________ --------------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= =~ VIII. The Matches: Myrmidon ~= (AFS8) ================================================================= --------------------------------------------------------------------- You are now a myrmidon, a Greek mythological figure. Your first opponent is a little Wood Elf with a little magic dagger. It has a weak frost enchantment that shouldn't cause you too much trouble. Owyn gives you 200 septims for this victory. Next you have a normal High Elf with light armor and longsword. Take em' down for another 200 gold. Your last fight is a normal Orc with heavy armor and a silver battleaxe. Own him for 250 gold and a promotion to Warrior. _______________________________________________________________________________ --------------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= =~ IX. The Matches: Warrior ~= (AFS9) ================================================================= --------------------------------------------------------------------- Warrior, huh? Not bad. A better name means tougher fights, unfortunately. A Nord three levels above you with nasty longsword skills opens up your warrior matches. Take her down and win 250 gold. Next Owyn matches you up with the first of two magic users in the arena. Close on her fast so she will unsheath her blade, lessening the damage she deals. Return to Owyn for another 250. Last is a beastly orc with a big ole' warhammer. Keep safe from that thing and hit her real quick after she misses. Report to Owyn for 300 gold and a promotion to Gladiator. _______________________________________________________________________________ --------------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= =~ X. The Matches: Gladiator ~= (AFS0) ================================================================= --------------------------------------------------------------------- Gladiator...sweet. First you're up against three Argonian prisoners; two of which are unarmed, the last one wields a sword. They all are higher levels than you so don't let them corner you. Run until you can seperate them then take them down one at a time. When you've shown the lizards the punishment for their crimes Owyn will reward you 300 septims. Second is a Khajiit with his own healing potions. You should be able to take him down easily. Return to Owyn for another 300. Last is a Breton with a longsword and should be the easiest of your gladiator matches. Report to Owyn again for 350 gold and a promotion to Hero. _______________________________________________________________________________ --------------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= =~ XI. The Matches: Hero ~= (AFC1) ================================================================= --------------------------------------------------------------------- You are a Hero now and at your last 4 matches in the Arena. It ends pretty tough. It opens with a former Blade that still wields his Akaviri Longsword, Blade helmet, and Blade shield. He is quite a few levels above you. Be ready for a long and bloody fight. After killing him, get back to Owyn for 350. Second is the last magic user you'll face. She's five levels above you, and has various fire damaging spells. She also has an enchanted shield called the Grey Aegis with a Resist Magic enchantment. Do like the other mage and move up close for a melee fight. Return to Owyn for 350 again. The last one is a very dangerous match. You face the yellow team champion, that rude woman in the bloodworks, along with a pair of friends. She herself is seven levels above your own, and her allies, a mage and an archer, are two levels above. Owyn sends Porkchop, the blue team mascot, up with you. Make sure he occupies one of the three enemies the whole match. Take care of the lesser foes first, so you may focus on the other champion. After the allies are dead, kill the champion herself. Find Owyn once more to get 500 gold and promotion to Champion. _______________________________________________________________________________ --------------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= =~ XII. Grand Champion ~= (AFC2) ================================================================= --------------------------------------------------------------------- To challenge Agronak gro-Malog, the Grey Prince, current Grand Champion, talk to Battle Matron Ysabel Andronicus. She'll explain the rules of this match. Fortunately, you can wear whatever you please in this match, along with being able to loot the victim's body. gro-Malog wears his Raiment of Valor which boosts his Helath, Fatigue, Athletics, and Personality by 10 points each. He wields a longsword and shield along with being skilled in both. Before you challenge him yourself, prepare very well with everything. There is a way around this battle though, talk to him about the "Origin of the Grey Prince". This quest is covered in Idiosyncrat's Side Quest FAQ. If you completed this quest then he will beg you to challenge him. After you challenge him, go back to Isabel to select a nickname. My favorite is the Crimson Blade, but that's just me. When you begin the battle, Agronak charges at you then suddenly stops. He sheathes his sword, stands still, and asks you to kill him. Take him down easily, loot his body then return the Valor to Ysabel for 1000 gold. You also are able to select your own Heavy or Light Raiment of Valor for keeping. Congrats! You are now the Grand Champion of the Arena! _______________________________________________________________________________ --------------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= =~ XIII. Extras ~= (AFC3) ================================================================= --------------------------------------------------------------------- There are many things to do while you are exloring the Arena. Even if you've become Grand Champion, Ysabel wishes you to fight on. That means she wants you to do weekly matches against creatures leveled to your own. You'll always have three options of animals and a sum of gold depending which ones you fought. How you fight them might depend on you how much gold you get, I'm not sure about this and I'll have to test it but if anyone finds out for sure before please email me. One thing I've heard is that your reward is lowered by about 500 gold if you summon a creature to help you. Another factor might be how fast you finish the battle. If you are level 5 or lower, you can choose to battle with a Boar, a Boar and a Wolf, or two Wolves and a Goblin Skirmisher. At levels 6-8, you may choose a Goblin Berserker, two Trolls, or two Goblin Berserkers and a Troll. At levels 9-11 you may choose a Mountain Lion, two Mountain Lions, or two of them and a Spriggan. At levels 12-14 you can choose among a bear, two Minotaurs, or a Bear and two Minotaurs. At levels 15-17, you can go up against an Ogre, two Ogres, or two Ogres and a Land Dreugh. At level 18 and higher you can pick from 1-3 Minotaur Lords. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Another little thing is that you will have your own Adoring Fan. You'll meet him after exiting the Arena when you become Grand Champion. All this little guy will do is stay put, follow you, or leave you. If he leaves he'll just sit around at the arena, crying, waiting for his only friend to come back to him... He's a little helpful though, when at night he'll carry a torch to light the way. Also, he'll run away early at any sign of danger and come back when it is safe again. You can attack him and he'll helplessly defend himself, because he is six levels below you. Word of your rising will go into gossip and rumors. Along with that, the Blue Team gladiator will no longer be pleased with you. Agronak was his friend. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One last thing. If you look in the crumbled paper beside Owyn's cabinet beside Owyn, you'll find a note Branwen wrote to him saying she's his daughter. Branwen is a girl who trains outside the Arena with her friend. This does not strike a quest but is interesting to know. Neither of them will say anything about the note. Branwen fights with her friend on a mat from like 6am. to 1am. everyday. Watch them fight for a couple minutes and your hand to hand skill will shoot up 5 levels. They also hold a helpful item called the bands of Kwang Lao in their chest nearby. It's their chest so it'll be classified as stealing. It increases your hand to hand skill by 20 points when you wear them. There's an extra 15 hand to hand levels for you... _______________________________________________________________________________ --------------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= =~ XIV. Frenquently Asked Questions ~= (AFC7) ================================================================= --------------------------------------------------------------------- Here I will list some of the frequently asked questions that are emailed to me. Q: How do I complete the whole quest and get it off my active quests?! I beat all the Minotaur Lords! A: Right now, I have no clue how. I think it stays there the whole game. Then again, there's not much of a point on completed it unless you get an acheivement for it (on the Xbox 360). Or unless you go crazy about conquering the game and completing every single quest. Though I will keep my eye-out on a way to beat it. --- Q: I lost my battle raiment, and I don't want to travel everywhere I've been looking for it, how can I get a new one? A: There is a raiment cabinet beside Owyn with five of each kind of raiment. They regenerate once-a-day and are free to take.
