Direct Section Finder System
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have a system, like many other guides, that allows you to find the section
you want to read without the need of scrolling all the way down to find it.
It's a really simple system, though. All my sections have been seperated into
chapters and segments, chapters numbered and segments lettered. You can then
simply find any section, by pressing ctrl+f and typing in the segment or chapt-
er title, number and/or letter. For example, if I was looking for the game
controls for the game, I would search "(a) Game Controls". Since this is the
only place in the guide where the words "(a) Game Controls" then the search
function would bring you there. Simple as that.
 (a) Introduction
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Hey gamers, it's been quite some time since I last posted a guide. This is my
seventh guide, and seven being my personal lucky number (like for many others)
I decided to leave it for an awesome game. After playing through Batman: Arkham
Asylum once and beating all the challenges, I'm really started to feel that it
is my favorite game of all time- and so I decided to make this full guide for
it. I will try and make this the most informative and useful guide out there
when it's finally finished.
Ever since Batman: Arkham Asylum was announced I've been waiting for the day
it's released. I'm a hardcore Batman fan, having read over fifty Batman comics
and watched almost all of the movies, so that's one reason why I couldn't wait.
The other reason was because the quality of the game seemed to define greatness
in gaming- everything from superb graphics and sound to satisfying game play
and variety. And I could see all that from the previews, E3 videos, and the one
short kick-ass demo the developers released before the final game. Once I got
my hands on the full game though, I was more than satisfied. This game is one
in a million, a rare gem that does almost everything right and sets it all up
so well that it doesn't even matter if you like the game genre or not.
In short this is great stuff, and we need more games like this. So let's hope
that developers start putting forward as much effort as Rocksteady Studios, and
we'll have a bright future of gaming ahead of us.
                                                       Your Pal, Kranti
This short part will be on a little info about me, but if you're not interested
feel free to move on to the next part of this chapter.
I have over ten years of gaming experience by playing over two hundred titles
and beating at least sixty of them. Completely, from start to end, rooting out
all the secrets and side stuff. How did all this begin though?
At the age of just seven my dad brought back a NES (Nintendo Entertainment
System) so that he could play Super Mario and introduce me to it. I loved it,
and soon I was playing all sorts of games with him (and alone) as well. Gaming
was for pure fun back then however, and I thought little about the story,
presentation, sound, and whatnot. A year later I got the Gameboy Color, and
played Pokemon Blue and Yellow to the max. And other games, of course.
Then my beloved aunt decided- this was two years later- to give me a SNES. A
Super Nintendo. I was very excited when I got the system, and I couldn't wait
to play better versions of the games I played on the NES. And I did- games like
Mario got their sequel and I love them. But again gaming was only for pure fun.
Then of course I got a Game Boy Advance, and found myself not only replaying
Pokemon (and getting the story more this time), I also bought many other games.
After seven to eight months I think, my aunt gave me another game system. This
time only because my uncle got a PS2, but it was still a great gift. I recieved
a playstation, and a bunch of games. It must have been around twenty games as
well, I still remember not knowing which one to start with. I ended up playing
everything for pure entertainment, and soon found myself settled and into
"beating" some of them. Yes gaming became more serious when I reached the age
of ten, and I found myself beating a few games. I bought and owned over a
hundred games for that console.
The real big hit came next, however. A year later the Xbox was released, and I
found it a much cooler system than anything I've ever seen. Sure it was big and
perhaps a little ugly, but at the same time it was cool- both in color and in
design. It looked... like a kick-ass game system, rather than a delicate one.
I wanted it so bad, especially after playing Halo at my friends'. So I asked
for it a few months after release, and my parents promised to buy it for me. I
can't stress how happy I was to hear that piece of news.
Unfortunately it took another few months for me to finally get the system, and
I started out with just one game: Dead or Alive 3. Now that game was far from
perfect, but as probably quite a few of you know, it's pretty good. It's also
the first time I actually owned a next-gen game, so I was glad to play it. I
think I beat the game with every character after I got my third game for the
system. The second game was Terminator, the third was 007: Nightfire. I loved
the latter, playing what must have been a few hundred multiplayer matches with
my sister, friends, and bots.
The real gaming started with the Xbox I must say. The next couple of years were
spent on reading game mags and figuring out which games to buy, and which to
avoid. I felt I understood how important a game's story could be sometimes, and
I started to listen to them. I read reviews and compared them. I also picked
games I liked the most and finished them off completely- I must have finished
half of my first twenty games by the time I bought the twenty-first.
I still remember the thirteeths being Conker: Live & Reloaded. One of the best
game I've played to date, not only because it was funny and great fun, but also
because it had the best graphics I've ever seen, had superb sound, and just
presented to me one of the best characters I've ever known. Not to mention the
great multiplayer. Oh and this game was the reason I got Xbox Live as well, and
I spent ages on live with it. This was late 2005 by the way, and half a year
ago I also got Halo 2 and played a lot of live with it.
And then the guide and review writing began, starting with Conker and then with
a couple of other games like Fable. I also recieved the PSP around the time I
got Conker, and I spent a hell load of time on that too. Half a year later I
was deep into writing reviews and guide for both the Xbox games and PSP games.
I didn't post all of it onto sites, no, a lot were for practice and fun, but
I eventually started posting and joined gamefaqs.com.
Around summer 2007, which by then I had over fifty games on the Xbox and thirty
game on the PSP (and completed half of them), my mum bought an Xbox 360. Yes,
just one random day she decided to get it for me. The joy! It was not a gaming
leap like it was back when I got my Xbox, but it got me a little deeper into
guide writing I suppose. The next two years I spent on buying all the great
games that came out, and all with my money as well. Nearly every single one of
them was bought with my hard-earned (yeah right) pocket money. But it felt good
to do so. Because in a way it meant my parents couldn't take them away from me
by saying "we paid for them anyway, so take your punishment and give them to
us".
Games like Mass Effect, Oblivion, Gears of War, GTA IV, and Halo 3 were great
experiences. In just under two years I bought more than thirty games, and as of
now I've beaten what must be eighty percent of them. The games listed above
plus Bioshock, GRAW 2, Perfect Dark, COD 4, Ninja Gaiden, Dead Space, Fallout 3
and Fable 2 are just some of the games I absolutely loved. And then, of course,
I got possibly the best game ever made- Batman: Arkham Asylum. It was a long
and painful wait, but it was all worth it.
Yep and that's it. My gamer life may not be all that long and twisted, but it
felt like a damn long journey to me. Mostly because I can't believe how I
survived with a playstation now that I'm for Microsoft. But yeah I can't really
complain that much- Sony does deliver quite a few good games here and there.
After all, they have Batman: Arkham Asylum as well, don't they?
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (c) About the Guide
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
This guide will feature the complete walkthrough on Batman: Arkham Asylum and
very detailed information on its various aspects. Unlike many guides out there,
this guide is not simply seperated into chapters, but also into sections that
group the chapters up. There are five of these, and these will help you take
the first step into narrowing down the area of info you're looking for.
The first section will be the opening to the guide and include some basic info
on starting the game (you're in this section, by the way). The second section
will be on all the general information of the game- so you'll be able to find
all the basics and game info there such as the a characters chapter and a
chapter on combat. The third section is one on the main story of the game, so
the centre of the guide is there. This is not some straight forward walkthrough
as this game is quite long and not linear, and I've spent a lot of time filling
this walkthrough with useful strategy. The fourth section includes all the
chapters on certain areas of the game that may require a closer look- such as
it's enemies and gadgets. This is the section I'm most likely going to add
chapters to in future updates. The final section is simply a "closing up" of
the guide, but you can find the interesting "future updates" there and of
course the credits to all the good people that made this guide happen. And the
game of course.
You can view the guide in chapters if that suits you better, just ignore the
sections and head for the chapter you want to. In each chapter however, I've
broken up the info into "parts". These parts are lettered from (a)-(z). So once
you find the chapter you are looking for, you can narrow down what you seek
even more by scanning through the parts of the chapter. These will do well to
tell you what's exactly in each of the chapters of this guide. If you still
cannot find a specific area you want to look up with these, simply press 'ctrl'
and 'f' at the same time to bring up the search function, then search for what
you're looking for. Try not to make it long and make sure you spell the words
correctly. Chances are you'll find whatever it is you want to find. If all else
fails, you can always email me and I'll reply to you asap.
My guide also has a Note System. It allows you to immediately know where you
can find more info on more peculiar or important phrases or words. If one of
these appears somewhere, there will be an asterix '*' next to it. Then at the
bottom of the part you will see '*NOTE', with the message preceding it. Here
you can learn where else in the guide you can read more about the phrase or
word. If there is a regular note not connected to a word or phrase, you will
see 'Note:'. My other system in the guide is using clear symbols to represent
buttons on the 360 controller. Here is the key to the symbols:
   (A) - A button
   (B) - B Button
   (X) - X Button
   (Y) - Y Button
   {L} - Left Thumbstick
   {R} - Right Thumbstick
   [LB] - Left Bumper
   [RB] - Right Bumper
   [L] - Left Trigger
   [R] - Right Trigger
Yeah so try remember these symbols for my sake though it's bloody obvious which
is which, thanks guys.
 (d) Batman: Arkham Asylum
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
In case you were wondering what this game is like, what it's about, and how
good it actually is, I've written up an overview here. This part contains a few
paragraphs to sum the game up, in other words.
Batman: Arkham Asylum is an action adventure game that allows you to be Batman.
Not a simple and straight forward Batman, but one that has all the martial arts
and detective skills you've seen in the movies and comics. This is a game with
the best portrayal of a character found in movies or comics.
What is important to know about the game as well is that it would still be an
excellent game without it being set in the Batman universe, even if you contro-
lled a basic ninja detective instead of Batman. The game has this much quality.
There are no levels or missions in the game- in fact the entire thing is one
single, big mission. Although quite a few areas are locked until you get better
gadgets to unlock them, you can freely explore the Asylum buildings and the
island during the mission. What seperates the game into parts are the specific
sequences and objectives you must perform to continue with the story.
There are tons of different objectives you'll recieve during the game, but the
game play is based around three different aspects: combat, stealth, and explor-
ation. All three aspects are incredibley deep and satisfying to do in-game.
You'll fight many different types of goons with the superb free-flow combat,
you'll sneak around and pick off armed guards while using your detective mode
to help, and you'll explore Arkham Island for secrets, objectives, and more.
The pacing is great, and you'll find a lot of variety in the game play to keep
you strapped onto your seat while you play.
The final thing to note is that the game has jaw-dropping visuals and audio.
The graphics are flashy, colorful and very atmospheric, and to be honest this
is one of the most polished games I've ever seen. You'll almost never see any
glitches of any sort (I only saw one small glitch). The animations are done
well and realistically, thanks to Rocksteady Studio making good use of their
motion capture room. The soundtrack is the best for a batman game, and serious-
ly one of the best soundtracks that I've heard. The voice acting is wonderful,
every character is voiced by a unique person and Batman and Joker are voiced by
Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamil respecively- the two that voiced for Batman and
Joker for many different Batman-related shows, including the animated series.
This is an awesome game, it's deep and satifying, has all the qualities of a
highly-polished and well-made game. It also packs decent length for this type
of game, and includes of bunch of extra things to find and do once you're done
with the main story. And of course, it's good enough for you to give it another
go, possibly on the very challenging but fantastic 'hard mode'.
To get you started I've written the fundamentals of the game here, such as the
game controls, screen interface, story, and menu information. This is all 'game
manual' stuff, but it might help those that have lost their manuals or didn't
even get one in the first place.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (a) Game Controls
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
The control scheme in Batman: Arkham Asylum is pretty large. Rocksteady Studios
made use of every single button, trigger, and thumbstick with not only one
function, but sometimes two or even three.
I've written up the full controls in great detail below, complete with full
explanation of each game control next to it. If you simply want to know which
button does what without the explanation, read the words between the vertical
lines (the "|"s).
EXAMPLE LAYOUT:
   The Button - |What this button does| Explanation and detailed info.
 Normal Controls
 ---------------
 Left Thumbstick - |MOVEMENT| Push this thumbstick to make Batman walk in that
                   direction.
 Right Thumbstick - |CAMERA/ZOOM| Rotate this thumbstick to adjust the camera
                    around batman for a better view. If you turn the camera
                    left/right while moving, you will make batman turn in that
                    directionand the camera will stay behind him. If you want
                    to rotatethe camera so that you can see the front side of
                    batman, you need to stop movement before rotating.
                    Click the thumbstick button to zoom into a first person
                    view that sees a bit further than you usually can. This
                    allows you to focus on some things more.
 Directional Pad - |SELECT GADGET| Use the eight different directions of the
                   d-pad to select one of your owned and mapped gadgets right
                   away.
 A Button - |INTERACT/RUN/GLIDE| This is a context sensitive button which means
            you press it to allow batman to interact with something depending
            on the situation. So next to a ladder you will latch onto it, next
            to a raised platform you will climb onto it, etc.
            Hold (A) to make batman run. This allows him to move much faster
            and alters the camera view to a regular third-person persepctive.
            Hold (A) to make batman glide when the prompt appears on screen,
            but you usually know you can when near a ledge with enough space to
            glide down.
 B Button - |CAPE STUN/SILENT DROP| Press the (B) button when walking or runni-
            ng to perform the cape stun. This move makes enemies startled and
            paralyzed for a little while, and can be chained in with strikes
            and counters.
            When prompted you can also tap (B) to drop down below from a ledge,
            gargoyle, etc, in a silent manner that does not alert guards.
 X Button - |STRIKE| Performs a simple strike when the (X) button is pressed.
            You can press (X) more if you want to deliver more strikes. These
            have many different animations and can be chained into combos.
 Y Button - |COUNTER| Allows you to counter an incoming melee attack. This
            makes batman block or evade the attack and deliver a counter blow.
            Can be chained with strikes and cape stuns to perform combos and
            better moves.
 Right Bumper - |GRAPPLE| Batman will shoot his grapple at a available grapple
                point, such as a ledge, gargoyle, or a raised platform. This
                will then pull batman up to that location quickly.
 Left Bumper - |DETECTIVE MODE| Activated detective mode. This will serve as a
               type of x-ray vision for the batman, enabling you to see through
               walls to locate enemies or other characters. Also shows suspici-
               ous signs, points of interest (such as grappling points), and
               more.
 Right Trigger - |CROUCH/USE GADGET/QUICK BATCLAW| This triggers makes batman
                 crouch down, therefore enabling the "silent predator" mode.
                 When batman remains crouched, he will be more concealed from
                 his enemies, and can creep up to anyone facing away from him.
                 If you have a gadget equipped, this trigger makes you use the
                 gadget (if available or possible).
                 If you tap this button you will use the batclaw immediately,
                 even if you haven't equipped it beforehand.
 Left Trigger - |AIM MODE/QUICK BATARANG| Hold this trigger to enter aim mode,
                where batman holds out a batarang and a targeting reticle
                appears at the center of the screen. From here you can press
                R to toss the batarang towards where ever you aimed.
                Tap this trigger to immediatley toss the batrang outwards in
                the direction you're facing.
 Start Button - |PAUSE MENU| - Opens the pause menu that lets you tinker with
                options and the like.
 Back Button - |INFORMATION MENU| - Opens the information menu that shows you
               the map, objectives, character bios, secrets, and Waynetech
               Upgrades.
 Advanced Controls
 -----------------
 (A), (A) - |DODGE| Tapping (A) twice in a row allows batman dodge in the
            direction in which you point the left thumbstick.
 [R], (Y) - |GROUND TAKEDOWN| When an enemy is on the ground, you can hold [R]
            then press the Y button to finish him off with a ground takedown.
 [R], (A) - |Corner Cover| Pull and hold [R] at a corner then press (A) to hide
            behind it.
 (A) + (X) - |THROW MOVE| (Requires Upgrade) Allows you to throw an enemy next
             to you once you reached a certain number for the combo multiplier.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (b) Game Screen
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Developers Rocksteady Studios have created an excellent game screen interface
that's easy to handle and gives all the info you need at the same time.
Here are the features on the game screen:
*************
Health Circle
*************
At the top left corner of the screen will be where your health information is
displayed when your health gets damaged in any way. You start off with only a
semi-circle white bar, but as you upgrade your health you'll add blocks to it
to slowly make the shape into a circle. When you get injured the white parts
diminish leaving a black bar with the white outlines. Once all your health is
gone you die. Note that this circle appears on a comic-style batman symbol to
make it stand out.
*****************
Experience Circle
*****************
A thinner white bar than the health circle, the experience circle can be found
on the bat symbol near the top left corner of the screen. A white line starts
filling up a circlular bar to show you how you're progressing with your XP, as
when it completes an entire circle you get to upgrade anything once. This bar
appears whenever you gain experience.
***************
Gadget Selected
***************
At the bottom left of the screen you will find the comic-style sketch of your
currently equipped gadget. After a while the symbol will disappear, but when
you use that gadget again the symbol will reappear, remind you which gadget you
have equipped.
************
Gadget Wheel
************
Your gadget wheel appears when you use your d-pad to select a gadget. This
wheel appears at the bottom left corner of the screen, and disappears when you
have selected your gadget.
****************
Interaction Icon
****************
The interaction icon appears whenever you can interact with the environment in
some way with the (A) button, or you can make batman do something with other
buttons. These prompts will appear at the bottom center of the screen, with the
button shown on the right and the action which you will perform on the left.
This guide be gliding, climbing a ladder, dropping down silently, etc.
******************
Points of Interest
******************
When you see points of interest on the screen, batman will usually show you
what they are in Detective Mode. An arrow will come out of this point of
interest, and an information box will describe the point for you.
*****************
Targeting Reticle
*****************
Some gadgets such as the batarang bring up the targeting reticle when you enter
Aim Mode (pull and hold Left Trigger). This brings up the targeting reticle
that allows batman to aim exactly at where you want to use the gadget. This
reticel also locks onto enemies automatically.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (c) Prologue Story
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Before you start the game you might want to read about the prologue story, a
very brief explanation on what is going on in the beginning. If the cutscene
was enough for you, feel free to move on.
At the very start of the game Joker seems to have escaped Arkham Asylum and
been up to no good. Batman successfully apprehends him, however, and secures
him in his batmobile. He brings him towards Arkham Island, wanting to return
him to the jails of Arkham Asylum- where he truly belongs. Batman does not seem
to recognize the Joker obviously being too happy about the situation. Too happy
even for him.
Upon arrival, Batman greets Commissioner Gordan who evidently had been trying
to help the situation. Batman turns the Joker into the hands of some guards,
who bring him in. The Joker plays along with the guards as they enter the
Intense Treatment center, with Gordan and Batman waiting outside. The guards
believed that Batman would alert the villains he had captured before, so tells
him to stay out. The problem is Batman feels that the capture of Joker was too
easy this time, and he's right. A few seconds later Joker breaks free of the
guards and knocks them out, and Batman yells for someone to alert the Warden.
Batman tries to smash the window open, so he could jump down and get Joker
himself. The glass is bulletproof so it's too late when he finally breaks
through. Joker welcomes him to the "Madhouse" as he does so, and also tells
Batman that he set a trap and he sprung it for him. The Joker releases some
inmate thugs on Batman, and the game officially begins.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (d) Main Menu
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
The main menu consists of quite a few options, but when you first start the
game only a few are available for you to select.
 New Game - Start a new game in story mode, where most of the best game play is
            found in Batman: Arkham Asylum. You choose this by selecting an
            unused save game slot.
 Load Game - Load a previously saved game from one of four save slots.
             (This option appears before you enter the main menu).
 Continue Story - Appears as the top most option of the main menu. You can use
                 this continue your currently saved game from this profile.
 Challenge Modes - Views the big number of challenges you can take on at any
                   time and earn medals (your score can also be ranked on xbox
                   live leaderboards). You need to unlock these challenges in
                   the main story mode.
 Downloadable Content - Allows you to access any downloadable content if you
                        are able to connect to Xbox Live (marketplace).
 Character Trophies - Views all your unlocked character trophies, which you can
                      select any to admire. Must be unlocked by solving riddles
                      and such.
 Character Bios - Views all the character bios you have unlocked from the main
                  story mode. You unlock them by meeting new characters or
                  hearing about them.
 Options - Tinker with the in-game options such as the audio, game play, and
           graphics.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (e) Saving and Loading
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
The game saves manually at check points, and you can only load games at the
main menu. It's unfortunate that you cannot just save at any point during the
game even though it's a game with pretty much a full-fledged free-roam area.
You can use these "checkpoints" to help you save a game, however. Checkpoints
are almost always located at doorways or points where you enter a new area. You
know this happens when some animated bats quickly fly to the top-middle of the
game screen and form the name of the new area. So whenever you enter an area,
you gain a checkpoint and the game saves. Use this method to help you save the
game when you find a riddler trophie or do some exploring- simply head back to
any area you've previously visited and your game will be saved.
Just thought I would clear that up now, just in case people were wondering
about where to save and load the game.
This section contains many valuable information for both beginners and experts.
You will not only find the basics of the game here, but also many good ways of
using moves, maneuvers, gadgets, and so on. You can head right to the story
mode walkthrough if you don't need any help on this info- but it's here when
you need it. It's also a good choice to read parts of this section as you prog-
ress through the main story.
I strongly recommend everyone to read at least some parts of this section,
especially Chapter 6, "Batman & Game Features", which will teach you many of
the easy-to-miss features in the game that will enhance the experience. The
following chapter may also be interesting to you even if you're an expert,
because it's the "Characters" chapter. You'll find all the detailed info on
many of the in-game characters here.
Although the game does not have a jump button (which is a good decision, in my
opinion), Batman has many different maneuvers under his belt. You can climb
onto things, leap over open spaces, grappel to higher places, and even perform
the infamous Batman glide. If you're not sure how to pull these off, or you
just want to learn more about them, read the following parts.
It's very simple to move Batman around. Use the left thumbstick to guide his
direction, and push it forward to make him walk. By pushing {L} all the way
will make Batman walk faster, and less pressure on the thumbstick slows down
the walk. Yes you can only walk* with {L} like in GTA, but it's a good touch
that makes the game more realistic and special.
Note: When you're walking (and also standing, for that matter) the camera is
actually a behind-the-shoulder view with Batman positioned more towards the
left side of the screen (like the view in Dead Space or Resident Evil). This
makes his walk and presence much more powerful.
*NOTE - Right below (part b) is where I teach you how to actually move faster
        than a walk.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (b) Running
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
If you can't stand the walking or just need to get a move on, you can still
make Batman run by pressing and holding (A). Point the {L} to direct his run,
and alter your pressure on the {L} to change the speed. When you reach a ledge
with an open space that has a visible ledge nearby (across the space), you can
jump from your place to the ledge on the other side (automatically, just keep
pushing {L} forwards). If the ledge is a little bit too far, you may catch the
ledge where you can just press (A) to pull you up, should there be enough space
to do that. Batman won't jump at all if it's out of range, but you can still
use other moves to make him 'jump' off this ledge. This will be explained later
in part d, "Gliding", and part e, "Grapple Move".
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (c) Climbing
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Batman will actually climb onto crates, raised platforms, ledges, etc, if you
push the left thumbstick towards them for a couple of seconds. If you want to
do it yourself or immediately, then stand next to the object and press (A).
Usually the context-sensitive interaction icon will appear and confirm that you
can climb here, but even if it doesn't still press (A) as there is sometimes a
delay with that icon.
Climbing allows Batman to quickly escape certain situations and also explore an
area better. Sometimes it is also simply the means to maneuver through the
environment. The final note is don't forget about climbing and make sure you
utilize the move to get to places you other wise can't.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (d) Gliding
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
One of Batman's coolest moves is even cooler in Batman: Arkham Asylum, possibly
animated so well that it surpasses the gliding in the movie "The Dark Knight".
To glide simply press and hold (A) at a ledge with enough space below. At times
Batman will jump down a little before activating his cape- but don't panic- he
will open it up at the right time so just keep holding (A). Use the {L} to
direct your glide, making sure you don't fall into a pile of evil, bat-hatin'
goons.
Although a context-sensitive icon will pop up to acknowledge the fact that you
can press (A) to glide, you should quickly get use to remembering and using it
even when it has yet to pop up (because again, the icon's appearance can be
delayed at times). So in other words don't run to a ledge, wait a second for
the icon to appear and then glide- just do it immediately.
Gliding helps you safely reach areas that are far below, and also allows you to
reach areas you otherwise cannot reach. Gliding away from a fight that you are
almost loosing is sometimes a good idea as well. The most important thing is to
always remember that you have this move at your disposal, so use it when you
can. And who wouldn't want to- it just looks so damn cool.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (e) Grapple Move
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
This move makes up for the absence of a jump button* in the game. Of course
gliding and climbing and all that can allow you to get around without jumping,
but grappling is really what makes travelling upwards feel easy and effective.
You are also free to decide where you want to grappel up to out of the many,
many different grappel points in the game.
You can grapple up to any old gargoyle and ledge by looking up and tapping [RB]
when the grappel icon appears. You will see a circular pulsating icon with the
[RB] symbol next to it, indicating you will shoot your grapnel gun here and
grappel to this point when you press [RB]. You can shift your camera or move
Batman to alter the position of this icon and hence adjust the point at which
you will grappel to.
Using your grapnel gun gadget (nice alliteration right there) is useful for you
to reach good vantage points and get around areas with more speed. Quite a few
areas require you to grappel up to reach, so utilize this gadget well. It's
also a must to reach those gargoyles who are your best friends during stealth
sections of the game.
*NOTE: I personally think having no jump button is a good choice because making
Batman jump around crazily uses many animation and can not only waste their
efforts into making all the other animations so perfect, but it can also lead
to players making him jump around crazily to look like an idiot. The game's
many different ways to maneuver around more than makes up for the missing of
this 'jump button' anyways, so it's all good.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (f) Sneaking
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Being a super hero that stalks in the shadows you are able to sneak up on
enemies and take them out silenty, or just pass by without notice if that suits
you more.
To do this, pull and hold [R] to make Batman crouch down. This move can allow
you to enter vents and all that, but more importantly than that allow you to
creep silently and get behind or by enemies without them noticing. Use (L) to
creep while holding [R] and you will move with stealth. If you get behind an
enemy unnoticed, you can then press (Y) to silently take him out.
Note: You will still be noticed if you come to close to a guard or thug when he
      is facing you. The amount of darkness around you changes how fast they do
      notice Batman when they're facing towards you, however. The darker the
      area is, the more concealed will be.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (g) Dodging
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
You can dodge or evade incoming attacks by tapping (A) twice and pointing (L)
in the direction you wish to dodge to. Batman will leap and make a roll in that
direction. This move is not only good for avoiding attacks but it allows you to
reach enemies further away in less time while fighting. This can sometimes
allow you to continue stringing up more combos when you think you wouldn't be
able to reach the enemy a few metres away quick enough. It's also a better way
to dodge projectiles than running.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (h) Shimmy Move
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
If you ever latch onto the ledge in the game you can perform a shimmy move,
which is basically moving across the ledge while hanging off it. To grab onto a
ledge in the first place, you will have to do it by gliding towards a ledge or
leaping onto one of them when Batman jumps automatically across a ledge. Most
of the times you will also grappel up to a ledge and Batman will grab onto it
but not climb up. In all these situations, you can use (L) to make Batman
shimmy left or right along the ledge until you reach a desired location. You
can pull yourself up (should there be space) by pressing (A).
This can be useful for many reasons, but one tactic that may be forgotten is
making Batman shimmy to the part of the ledge where you won't get detected when
you climb up. So for example you glide to a ledge and grab onto it with your
hands, and see two thugs on the platform. You shouldn't just climb up and meet
them face on, maybe you should shimmy along to somewhere behind them or where
they might not notice you and THEN climb up. Once you do that use [R] to crouch
and hopefully you can get behind them and use the silent takedowns to safely
take them out and earn more XP.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (i) Corner Cover
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Yes, in Batman: Arkham Asylum you can even do a corner cover to look around
corners safely. This is most useful for surveying and then tossing a batarang
around the corner to knock some guy out.
To do the corner cover go to any corner and pull and hold [R]. While crouching,
press (A) near the corner to enter the corner cover 'mode'. You can then move
along the wall while you stick close to it, and peek around corners. You can
also pull and hold [L] around corners (with your batarang selected with the d-
pad) to aim at someone around the corner, then use [R] to toss it.
Note: This move is great for situations where there are two enemies around the
      corner. Knock one out with the batarang, and the other guard might do one
      of two things- come to check out who threw it, or check on his buddy.
      Either way it gives you the upper hand to quickly deal with them.
#                                                                             #
###############################################################################
Interacting is important in most games, whether it is shooting someone or just
simply opening a door. Some developers like to make their games have limitied
interactivity, but many make the interactive options creative and in-depth.
In Batman: Arkham Asylum, you'll find a sizable number of things to interact
with using a very nice system. It feels easy to interact with everything, as
the game uses context sensitive* interaction. This chapter will group up the
many different ways you can interact within the game and explain them in much
detail.
*NOTE: To learn what this is, read the first part of this chapter ("(a) Context
       Sensitive").
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (a) Context Sensitive
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
This is a system that is well used in games like Gears of War and Conker's Bad
Fur Day (or Conker: Live & Reloaded, if you got the Xbox version). With one
single button the Context Sensitive system lets you interact with anything at
the correct time and place.
Some people find it hard to understand the concept of using "context sensitive"
action in a game. It's actually quite straightforward- with one button you can
perform many different moves, but the actual move you perform will depend on
where you are standing and when you press the button. So the button is simply
senstive to the context... For example if you were standing near a door, you
can open it by pressing (A). If however you stand next to a ladder, you will
latch onto it instead if you press (A). So depending on where you are, and when
you press the button, you will and can interact in many ways.
In Batman: Arkham Asylum, the context-sensitive button is (A). You can use this
to climb lower platforms, objects, fences, and so on when you're near them. It
also allows you to open doors, activate switches, climb ladders, that kind of
stuff. It all depends on if you're standing next to the object. What's good
about this system in Batman is that it allows you to understand which action
you will perform when you press (A). An icon will appear at the bottom center
of the screen and appear like this-> " (A) ACTION ", where the word "ACTION"
would be the action you will perform upon pressing the A button. So next to a
door you will see " (A) Open Door ".
So don't ever overlook the powerful (A) button of many purposes! Check for the
icon frequently and see what you can perform in your situation. Here's a list
of things you can perform and interact with (A). I will add to the list as I
play through the game again and note down the interactive stuff:
                              - Open Door
                              - Enter
                              - Glide
                              - Talk to XXXXX*
                              - Climb
                              - Activate
                              - Open (Vent)
*NOTE: To read about talking to people, read part "b" of this chapter,
       "Speaking with NPCs".
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (b) Using Gadgets
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
A good way to interact with enemies or the environment is your lovely gadgets.
This game gives you a fair amount of gadgets which you are absolutely free to
use almost where ever you see fit. Want to spray some explosive gel in the
bathroom floor then detonate it? Sure, why not.
The main way to interact with your gadgets* is by using your grapnel gun and
batarang, which I will cover in this part.
The grapnel gun allows you to rappel up to raised ledges, surfaces, and those
eerie-looking gargoyles you find frequently (both indoors and outdoors). You
can rappel up to these things by first of all looking up at them, then spotting
the rappel lock-on icon that appears on them. This is the point at which you
will fire your grapnel gun if you press [RB]. You can adjust the location by
adjust the camera with (R).
The batarang is very useful with hitting switches, breaking chattering teeth,
and dazzling enemies. Simply use the left trigger (tap) to send it flying in
front without any real aiming. If you want to aim before tossing one, pull and
hold [L] then use (R) to adjust the crosshair. While holding [L] press [R] to
toss the batarang.
Both of the above gadgets are great ways to interact with the environment, and
can be vital to progressing in the game. Be sure to use them from time to time.
They're fun to use anyways so who wouldn't?
*NOTE: To learn everything about gadgets, head down to "Chapter 10: Gadgets".
       A full list and uses awaits you there.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (c) Attacking
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
A simply way to interact with something is to hit it. Yes, simply give it a
few jabs and elbows. Batman can do all that to Joker's thugs (and many other
enemies and bosses) by pressing (X)*. The rest is self-explanatory, but the
point is know that this game includes some heavy and very nice combat and
remember to use (X) to perform Batman's main moves. This will allow him to
'interact' with his foes.
*NOTE: To learn the in-depth strategies on combat, countering, and that kind of
       stuff, read the next chapter, "Combat".
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (d) Speaking with NPCs
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
There are tons and tons of non-playable characters (NPCs) that you are able to
speak with in Batman: Arkham Asylum. This is a great way of interaction in the
game, giving you opportunity to speak with many guards and characters to gain
backstory and listen to some interesting stuff (with all the excellent voice
acting).
To talk with an NPC, you need to be able to find a person that brings up an
icon at the bottom center of the screen that looks like this-> "(A) Talk to X".
"X" in this case stands for the character's name, sometimes it may be a simple
reference to the character's position (Docter, Guard), but a lot of the times
it will show you the unique name of the person you will talk to. Go up to him
or her and press (A) to begin the conversation.
The conversation will play out automatically, and you can only watch (and skip
it if you're mean enough). It's kind of like watching a cutscene but things can
be changing in the environment, such as a guard can pass you by from the backg-
round, a door could be opening, and so on. Whenever you recieve these chances
to talk to someone, be sure to do it as talking to a lot of people adds to the
experience and atmosphere of the game. Not to mention that Batman has many cool
lines to throw off for you as well.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (e) The Environment
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
The environment includes numerous different things you can interact with. I've
basically covered things you can interact with in the "context-sensitive" part
of this chapter, but what the heck- I'll do it again for those of you that will
not scroll up.
There are doors, platforms and ledges, switches, ladders, and more for you to
interact with in the environment of the game. To interact with them, you only
need to ever use (A). Simply go up to any of these objects and wait a split
second for an icon to pop up at the bottom-center of the screen, indicating the
move you will perform upon pressing (A), and then press (A) to interact with
it. If it's a door you will open it, if it is a character you will speak to him
or her. Same thing applies to everthing else.
The last note before you go is that you should keep your eyes wide open for
interactive objects such as Riddler Trophies to add to your collection and
vents and such for secrets paths. Activating detective vision with [LB] can
also allow you to locate interactable objects much faster, even those that do
not require the press of the (A) button. The most notable of these is probably
breakable glass, which Batman can break through* at the right moment for a cool
takedown (or you can break it with your batarang).
*NOTE: More information on this move can be found in part "j" of Chapter 5,
       "Combat".
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (f) Puzzles/Riddles
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
As you progress through the main game you will encounter a few puzzles that
will require some interaction to solve. When you are exploring around the game
and not continuing the story, feel free to solve the many riddles given by The
Riddler. These will be sort of interactable as well.
Puzzles and Riddles* will often require you to use your detective mode and the
"Environmental Scan" function to interact with the puzzle/riddle. This function
allows you to solve the puzzle or riddle if you are standing at the right place
and looking at the right thing. To solve puzzles in the main game just keep an
open mind and remember that you have your detective mode to help you.
*NOTE: Riddles will be explained in part "p" of Chapter 6, "Batman & Game
       Features".
###############################################################################
A large portion of the game is all about combat, and Rocksteady Studios has
created one of the best combat systems and thrown to us many of the best combat
encounters in video game history. Although this game is far, far away from a
beat 'em up since it contains all sorts of stealth action, exploration, and
detective work, combat is still a important game play element in the game.
This chapter will teach you all about beating foes up and using the correct
attacks for the correct situations. You will also read about the various moves
available to Batman, and how they can assist in different situations. If you
find it difficult to string up combos, or you are just starting off the game,
I urge you to read the following parts because they will make you a much better
Batman.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (a) Enemies
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
When we talk about combat, there are always enemies. Although a fair percentage
of enemies are Joker's Black Gate thugs, you will find a wide variety of
appearances for them, and they also wield different weapons and use varied
tactics against you. Other enemies can come in many different flavors, but we
will talk about that later*.
When dealing with regular thugs in the game, just face them straight on and
press (X) repeatedly to finish them off. If the number of thugs surpass two or
three, you need to start timing your strikes and counter at the appropriate
time. If the numbers get big (over eight thugs) you will need to make full use
the free-flow combat to survive. Read about that in the next part of this
chapter.
If enemies have melee weapons, it's a good idea to stun them first with your
batcape (press (B)). As you progress further into the game, the weapons will
become stronger, and sometimes you'll even find one or two thugs with guns even
though there isn't an opportunity for stealth. In these cases you know what to
do- deal with them first before the others.
*NOTE: You can learn all about the different enemies in the game by direction
       yourself to the "Enemies" chapter in chapter nine.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (b) FreeFlow Combat
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Rocksteady's newly invented combat system is absolutely amazing. The concept is
a little similar to Lionhead's "One Button Combat"- anyone can learn to fight
easily, but the system can go deep and difficult to master for those that want
that. This invites those that don't usually play games or aren't good at action
games to give this a try.
The combat is called "Free-Flow Combat" because the game allows Batman to
actually string up moves in an amazingly cool flowing motion quite easily. If
you button mash (X) you will still see a few nice moves, but your combos will
not stack and Batman's moves won't be as effect (and as cool-looking). For this
reason the system is great for those serious gamers that want a challenge. You
can try stringing up combos up to ten, twenty, thirty, even forty combo attacks
and not stop.
It's not easy though, as you'll need to be able to time your punches at the
right time, and aim them at the right guy. You'll also need to counter at the
right time, and use various moves correctly. After around three successful
strikes you will start the free-flow, and Batman will leap around and at the
enemies to strike them if they're too far, and the attacks will become faster
and more powerful. If you miss one strike, one counter, or don't attack for
about two seconds, the combo multiplier will reset to zero.
So the pros and serious gamers will get more XP to upgrade their Batman more,
as a higher combo multiplier means a higher XP bonus. Oh and by the way, this
system in other words allows you to connect attacks into your 'own' combos.
This is why there aren't any preset combos in the game- they are too overly
used anyways. Good choice again, Rocksteady.
Note: Speaking of combo strings, my personal best is 95 in challenge mode and
      over 60 in story mode, just in case you want to compare your highest with
      mine.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (c) Striking
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
This is the most basic attack move, but if you use it right Batman will pull
off an endless number of great-looking attacks. Developers Rocksteady Studios
created this button to remove the normal design of an action game- one button
for weak attacks and another button for heavy attacks.
Press (X) to perform a normal strike. If you press (X) repeatedly, you will
start combos. Depending on where you stand and how you direct your strikes with
(L), you can vary Batman's strikes significantly. Punches will become power
strikes, knee bashes, headbutts, elbow strikes, and more.
A key use to this basic strike is to successfully land it on an enemy at least
three times without getting hit or missing to get free-flow combat started.
From here Batman will be able to swing around and leap further to reach enemies
for a strike, so you can string longer combos because further enemies will be
in distance for your attacks.
Unless you don't give a damn for the combat or you can't really do it well, try
not to button mash (X), as it will keep disrupting your combos. Time and plan
your moves to watch Batman eliminate thugs with grace.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (d) Counter Move
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
The counter is a very important move in Batman: Arkham Asylum. Quite a few of
the action games allow us to block enemy's attacks, but there is no blocking in
this game. Instead you will use Batman's fast reflexes and master skills to
counter all sorts of moves, which not only keeps your health bar high but also
allows you to continue your combo multiplier.
To counter an incoming attack, press (Y). You can press this any time but if
no one is attacking you or if you've timed the press wrong, Batman will fail in
countering and your combat multiplier will stop (and maybe the enemy will then
successfully strike your face). So instead of button mashing, look for the
lighting bolt sign that appears above an enemies head when they are going to
attack you. Press (Y) when they appear, and you'll most likely counter the move
back.
The counter is also sensistive to direction, which means if an enemy attacks
from behind Batman he will catch his leg or arm and perform the counter while
still having his back to the enemy. This creates many awesome-looking moves and
counters. A big point to take not of is that you can continue stringing up your
combos (hence adding to the combo multiplier) even if you counter. So e.g. if
your combo multiplier is currently x7, and an enemy is about to strike you and
the lighting bolts sign appear, you can press (Y) to counter it and make your
combo multiplier x8. After this you can continue striking, and your combo will
not be disrupted. On the other hand if you had let the enemy strike you, your
combo will be restarted.
For Batman's protection and for racking up the higher combos, remember to
counter! It also feels damn good to counter any thug's attack- it makes you
feel genuinely like Batman.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (e) Cape Stun
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
The cape stun is a great way to mix up your fights in the game. This move does
not deal any damage at all, but immediately stuns an enemy and makes them
vulnerable. This is a vital move for the enemies that appear further on in the
game, and also those that carry weapons.
During a brawl with any number of enemies, you can press (B) to stun an enemy.
Batman will swing his cape and suprise an enemy you perform it to. Even if the
entire group of baddies have no weapons, this is useful for evening the odds.
Stunned enemies will usually remain that way for a few seconds, so you can stun
a few and take out a couple, then deal with the remaining thugs.
The best use of this move however is to use it against an armed enemy. This
will basically render his weapon useless while he is stunned- you can use this
chance to take him or other out. You can always stun them again if they regain
their composure.
Certain armed enemies can also block your moves, so this is the greatest chance
to pull of your Cape Stun. Use it to break down their defense, then finish them
with (X) strikes. You can also be creative whenever an enemy is stunned. If
the enemy is the only one or two left, you can stun them both and use explosive
gel beside them and wait till they break out of the stun. Then detonate the gel
and BAM! Good bye bat-haters.
Note: The cape stun does not reset the combo multiplier, it strings in with
      your combo moves.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (f) Throws
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
This move has to bought as an upgrade before you can use it. I only recommend
those that either want more in the combat or like the combat to purchase this
move, as the only time it comes in handy is of course, during combat.
This is not only because it's an attack move, but also because you need to
string up a combo of x8 before you can start tossing enemies around. This means
during encounters with one or two thugs (including in stealthy sections) you
cannot pull this move off. You can later on buy another upgrade to make the
requirements for using this move less demanding, but you still won't be able to
throw a guy at any time.
To achieve a x8 combo is not hard however. Just hit any number of thugs eight
times before missing or getting hit. Once you do that, the game will remind you
that you can now use (X)+(A) to pick up and throw enemies. This move deals a
lot of damage, and has the potential of hurting multiple opponents if you hurl
them into one another. These throws add to your combo multiplier and does not
disrupt it, so use the move to mix up your attacks.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (g) Take Downs
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
There are a great many take down animations in the game, and they are all very
satisfying to watch. Takedowns are also the quickest way to finish off an enemy
as well, as a successful takedown means an instant knock-out to an enemy.
To perform the basic ground takedown move, you'll need an enemy lying on the
ground first. Once you've knocked an enemy to the ground, you can go over to
him and pull [R] and press (Y) at the same time to perform the ground takedown.
This immediately knocks the enemy unconcious. Depending on your position and
situation, different takedown animations will occur.
The other basic type of takedown that is very different than the ground one is
the silent takedown. This move is a stealth move, and should not be tried on a
group of enemies as they will all pummel you while you try perform it on one
of their buddies (unless you do it somewhere they can't see you). To perform
the move you'll need to pull [R] and sneak close behind an enemy without making
him notice. Then once you're nearby, you can press (Y) to perform the silent
takedown to dispatch him immediately.
The final takedown I'll have to mention is one you need to purchase as an
upgrade- the infamous Inverted Takedown. This move can only be done when you're
above an enemy and you've got space to hang down (so the ideal place to perform
this move is when you're perched on one of the many gargoyles). You can then
wait for an enemy to pass by you and press Y to swoop down and snatch him in
your cape, bringing him up and then leaving him hanging on the string. Awesome
stuff.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (h) Batarang
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Your batarang is quite useful in combat even right off the bat, but many types
of upgrades are available to increase the usefulness of it in combat. You can
use it to knock any part of an enemy's body- whether you like to hit him in the
leg, chest, or head, it's up to you. How could you be Batman without having the
freedom of choosing where to toss the batarang?
Striking an enemy with the batarang from far away is useful for stunning them.
They will only take minimal damage with a batarang that has not been upgraded,
but a strike to the head will stun them long enough for you to head over and
finish them off. With the batarang selected pull [L] to enter aim mode and use
[R] to fire it off at an enemy. You can adjust the aim with (R).
You can also pull off a quick batarang throw by double tapping [L], though it's
(of course) less accurate and might not go to the enemy you want it to go to.
It's useful for quickly stunning an enemy from a distance in a group fight,
however, and can be mixed into your attacks quite well. I'm not very sure if
this disrupts your combos as of now, but I would think not.
A final note is to remember that the stun time for an enemy varies depending on
the location you strike them. Legs and arms stun for the least time, crotch and
chest stun a little longer, and a throw to the head stuns the longest.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (i) Combos
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
There are no preset combos in Batman: Arkham Asylum, which is one thing that
makes the combat in this game so fun and unique. Instead Rocksteady Studios
introduced FreeFlow Combat, which allows us to string together many different
moves and almost create our own combos.
Combo moves usually indicate to you the steak of hits you have dealt to your
foes. This is also present in this game, and the higher your combo streak the
higher your bonus XP points will be. You can create your own combos by pressing
(X) continuously at enemies, but at the same time pointing with (L) towards the
right direction and not missing any of your strikes. You can further mix up the
moves by countering enemy attacks with (Y), and stunning them with (B). You can
also purchase more moves to mix up the combos and increase your combo streaks
even more. But with only the basic (X), (Y), and (B) it's possible to get huge
combo streaks as well. The number of combo hits in a row is shown at the top
right corner of the screen.
It really almost seems like you're making your own combos (and definitely feels
like it), since even by pressing only (X) and timing everything well, you will
notice Batman pulling off many different moves with a huge variety of animatio-
ns. These combos are what makes the game's combat so much fun. A final point
before you move on is the redirect move. You can use it to help you avoid any
enemy's attacks and mix up your moves even more. Tap (A) twice in the direction
of any enemy to perform the redirect, which makes Batman leap over the enemy
and push him aside. This still allows your combo multiplier to remain, and you
can immediately continue comboing after it.
So basically, comboing increases your XP and fun. It's also a good challenge
for those that are looking for deeper combat systems- it's all here. Those that
don't really mind and just want to have some fun, you can mash the buttons all
you want and still feel pretty cool.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (j) Extra Moves
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
There are many situations in the game where you will find Batman performing
moves that don't fall into any of the above categories. Moves like setting a
trap with your explosive gel are considered another type of move, and so is
something like cutting the rope of a an enemy hanging from one. So keep your
eye out for those extra ways of dishing out justice on Arkham Island.
###############################################################################
This is a fairly deep game with a lot in it, and so I have included in this
chapter many different features that are worth an explanation. You will find
out about your Bat Suit, Stealth, Riddler Challenges, and more. All the things
that are worth knowing are here, explained in full detail. If you think some
other feature should also be explained here, please email it to and I'll add it
to the list.
An important chapter for all kinds of players, so whether you've just started
the game or half way through it, I suggest you read some of the following info.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (a) Batsuit
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Since you are Batman in this game, you will obviously have your awesome batsuit
on. Although there is nothing to say about the suit in terms of game play,
there is one special dynamic system going on with it. The batsuit will show any
severe damages you've taken during the course of the Batman's longest night
(which is the full in-game length). By the end of the game Batman will appear
badly hurt and his suit will look terribly damaged. This adds to the realism of
the game, as well as the depth and feel.
So if you ever find a tear in Batman's cape, it's not glitch or anything, it's
just a sign that you have allowed something to damage Batman's cape that way.
This is another one of my favorite features of the game.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (b) Health
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
In the game you have a health bar like many other action games. The bar is
located on the top right hand corner of the screen, represented as a curved
white guage that is positioned above the black Batman logo. Your health bar
only appears when you take damage, however.
Your health will go down whenever you allow Batman to take damage, whether it's
from an enemy's blow or from an environmental hazard. The white bits will start
to drain when you take damage, and when it completely drain you will die and
recieve a "mission fail" screen*. You can then continue at the previous check
point.
Batman's maximum health can also be improved, as upgrades for it are available
in the Waynetech section of your "Back Button" Menu. Each upgrade increases
Batman's health by one fair sized block of extra health guage, and soon by
purchasing all the health upgrades you will make a full circle with the maximum
health. These upgrades will help you dearly, especially if you are bad at
either the combat parts or the stealth parts (or both) of the game.
This is mainly because Batman gets hurt real fast, and you will find your full
health soon plummet down to a tiny bit of flashing-red health. But this will
only happen if you don't fight well, don't use stealth well, or meet some of
the more difficult bosses of the game. And speaking of stealth, many stealth
sections will have armed thugs walking around randomly, and they can take you
out even faster with their gun. You won't die in three seconds, but you will
only last for six to eight seconds on average.
Therefore you will want to try fight well and use good stealth to maintain your
health (that rhymes!). Buy armor (health) upgrades to help you if you find the
game quite difficult, and practice on the challenge maps to hone your skills.
*NOTE: Yes, whenever you die you will see a "mission failed" screen. This is
       not your typical game-over screen, however, as you will find more than
       a dozen short taunts from your rivals when you die, encouraging you to
       continue playing after dying.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (c) XP & Leveling Up
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Another layer of depth in Batman: Arkham Asylum is added by having a great
XP and Leveling System. There aren't really "levels" in the game per se, but
when your XP bar reaches a full circle you get one point to purchase Upgrades
with.
XP are experience points gained from defeating enemies, locating collectables,
destroying chatter teeth, and completing objectives. The better you fight the
more XP you earn however, and if you're really good with the combat system you
will gain tons more XP than someone that is pretty bad at it. So those that
explore and delve deep into the great combat system can be happy to have their
extra XP to upgrade Batman with.
When you level up, meaning your XP bar increases into a full circle, you will
get a x1 Upgrade in the Waynetech menu. This means you can pick one upgrade to
purchase. If you level up again without using your x1, you will see x2 instead,
and so on. I suggest you use the majority of the points you earn immediately
as this isn't an role playing game, so it's better to improve Batman sooner
than later. There are tons of upgrades available for you to choose from, but
some of are locked in the beginning. Unlock them by progressing through the
game.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (d) Purchasing Moves
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
You can purchase moves by entering the Waynetech screen of your Back Button
Menu. You will see many different upgrades available, at a total of twenty
unique ones, and each only requiring a 'point' to upgrade. So whenever you fill
your XP bar and gain a point, you can come pick one of these. As I've said
previously, almost half of the moves are locked at the beginning, and you'll
have to either progress through the story or purchase certain upgrades to
unlock them. Upgrades will be things that give you extra moves in combat, add
damage to your batarang attack, improves your gadgets, and so on. Pick well and
feel free to concentrate in upgrading certain areas of Batman, or spread out
your improvements by upgrading different areas.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (e) Dynamic A.I.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Knowing that stealth would be a pretty big part of the game, the developers
spent a lot of time on the game's A.I. system. The results are great as you'll
never be able to predict the route which an armed thug will take, as there
aren't any set paths for them.
Each enemy in the game has an incredible A.I. system behind them. Armed thugs
will patrol areas and scout for you if they see you- but you can never predict
what exactly they would do. They also change their behavior depending on how
scared they are of you, and may team up with guards, blind fire around corners,
and more. These A.I. designs make the stealth sections of the game much more
interesting, as it never becomes a trail and error process.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (f) Stealth
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Many Batman games have been released in the past, but none of them have put
Batman's great stealth skills to good use. Stealth is a big part of Batman, and
Rocksteady Studios has put a lot of effort into creating a Batman game where
you can use a wide range of tactics to stalk your enemies and take them out
silently.
But since "stealth" seemed like a word that indicates weakness, the guys at
Rocksteady decided to call their stealth game play "Predator Game Play". Batman
is always in power when he's hunting down enemies, so in my opinion this was a
very good choice of choice of words.
For actual strategies of ways of using stealth, read the next part below,
"Predator Game Play".
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (g) Predator Game Play
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Many areas in the game put Batman against a group of armed men, and that calls
for Batman's use of stealth tactics (or predator tactics, if that suits you
better). Although you have the choice of just running up to each gun-wielding
thug, you will be gunned down very quickly. Batman's not superhuman, remember,
and though he will take in quite a few bullets before dying, you shouldn't
forget about stealth or there could be serious consequences.
In the stealth sections of the game you will usually find many gargoyles stuck
on the walls high above. You can grappel up to any of these and use them as
vantage points to study your enemies. Turning on detective mode at this point
would be a good idea as well, because it tells you how many enemies are in the
room and where they are. You can plan ahead using this vision, but don't forget
about the games dynamic A.I.- it'll be hard to predict what exactly they'll do.
You can go set traps with your explosive gel gadget or locate a thug that has
isolated himself from the others though, for example. Use these sort of tactics
to slowly take out enemies one by one, and you will see them start panicking
and grouping up as you pick them off. It's all very satisfying and exciting
stealth game play. When sneaking on the ground, hold [R] to make Batman crouch
down and creep to make sure nobody hears him approach.
A few moves that you have to learn to assist you in stealth sections are the
Silent Takedown, Ground Takedown, and Batarang toss moves. The silent takedown
is simple to perform and very effective in taking guys out. Simply hold [R] and
creep behind an enemy without being caught. Then a prompt will appear on screen
saying you can use the Silent Takedown by pressing (Y). Press (Y) to choke the
guy unconcious.
The ground takedown has to be used to quickly finish off a thug you have
stunned- if they get up they'll call for other guards and shoot you. So whenev-
er you stun an armed enemy from a gargoyle or from behind, move up to him and
use [R] + (Y) to perform a ground takedown. The batarang toss move is helpful
for stunning enemies for you to finish off with a ground takedown. Select the
batarang gadget then use [L] to aim and [R] to toss the batarang. Use (R) to
aim for certain areas of a thug to stun them longer (such as the head).
If you ever get caught and they start firing at you, try not to run away. You
should instead use [RB] to quickly grappel up to a gargoyle and from there
keep swinging to other gargoyles until they can't find you. After that you can
start hunting them again. Like many stealth games though it's possible to not
alert any guard's notice at all, so try keep stealthy and you will beat these
sections with more ease.
Note: During stealth sections, you won't actually gain the XP and the health
      recovery from the XP until you defeat all enemies in the room or area. So
      a blind face-on attack to an armed thug is not a good idea, they will
      hurt you bad an you will have to stick with a small health bar for the
      rest of the section.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (h) Detective Mode
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
This mode is one of the most useful features to ever appear in a game. By
turning on Batman's Detective Mode, you can immediately highlight enemies and
points of interest. Any evidence in the environment will also be shown to you
as well.
To turn on detective mode tap the [LB] button once. The screen will be covered
in a cool blue filter, and every person you meet in the game will be seen as
skeletons. The first thing that appears when you turn this mode on is the no.
of enemies in the area, and how many of them are armed and how many are not.
You can also see through walls to locate these thugs- armed enemies will also
be highlighted in red.
The info box that appears telling you how many enemies there are present around
you will disappear after a few seconds, and from there you can look around the
environment and the detective mode will give you all sorts of information. This
information can be points of interest- any sort of operatable/interactable
environment object, surface, or system will be highlighted and explained with
its own info box. Every person you meet can also be highlighted and you will be
shown his/her heart rate, as well as the weapon that they're holding. This is
extremely useful information to know when hunting down a group of armed thugs.
The detective mode will also allow you to do some cool detective work. During
certain parts of the game you will be required to use Batman's detective skills
and the detective mode to track people. Here you will use the detective mode to
search for the right item or surface with the evidence you need, and be able to
scan it to locate a trail.
All in all this is a great feature that should not be forgotten about, but try
and not be in this mode all the time so that you can enjoy the great main-game
graphics.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (i) Detective Work
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
No Batman game has ever allowed Batman do some real detective work, but this
has all changed in Batman: Arkham Asylum. In this game you will be able to use
Batman's wonderfull 'toys' to solve many mysteries and track many characters.
These sections really add an entire element to the game that is very important.
Batman is the world's greatest detective after all.
Usually detective work makes you do some searching and scanning. You can use
your "Evidence Scanner" by tapping [LB] once, and your screen will turn into
a first person view with a focus point. You can aim this focus point at what
you think will contain the evidence, and if it IS what Batman's looking for you
will start to track this evidence. From then on you can keep looking for the
marks left behind that match the evidence, and slowly track your way to the bad
guy or whoever it is you were looking for.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (j) Locked Areas
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Many areas in the game are locked away at first until you acquire the correct
gadget to "unlock" it. When you do find the correct gadget, you can come back
to access the previously locked area and you will find either a few of the
Riddler's Challenges or an area to explore.
You know that an area is locked away when you find out that you cannot access
it in any way. An example of a locked area for players still near the beginning
of the game is a vent that is raised. You can normally only open vents by
making Batman pull the vent cover off, but how would you pull the cover off
when the vent's elevated two stories high? You'll need to wait till you acquire
a certain gadget in the future to open it.
Some areas are locked for story reasons however, such as a rival barricading
himself in a particular room or something. These areas will open naturally as
the story progresses.
The main point here is that there are many places to explore and find Riddler's
Challenges, even in places you thought were originally locked can be opened
with a new gadget.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (k) Inmates
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Inmates are the patients of the asylum, the crazies and the baddies that have
either been sent here by Batman or tons of other citizens. Most of them have
been released under the control of Joker, but many are specifically from Black
Gate Correctional Facility. Joker's men, in other words*.
Many will be released to fight you during the course of the game, and those
that are still locked up could be released any time as well, so keep an eye out
at all times. The most interesting of inmates are the ones that Batman had put
in Arkham Asylum himself, and many of those guys lead to boss fights.
*NOTE: Joker had purposely sent many of his men from Black Gate to Arkham
       Asylum before the game's story started, so that he could release them on
       Batman when he carries out his plans.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (l) Objectives
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
During the course of the game, after around an hour or two of play, you will
start recieving objectives to help you stay on track of the main story. All
objectives will be displayed on the game screen when you first get it, but if
you want to check on them later they'll appear in the maps menu.
The objectives will highlight your main goals of the current situations, and if
the situation calls for it, also sub-objectives. The sub-objectives will be
stated below the main objective in those cases. Accompanying the written objec-
tives will be an icon on the map that looks like a dotted circle with an
exclamation mark in it. This icon will mark the location of your highlighted
objective- should you have more than one.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (m) Challenges
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
You will unlock up to a total of sixteen great challenge maps during your play
through the game. You can find all of your unlocked challenges in the main
menu and they are available to be played at any time. These challenges are
separated into two basic types- predator and combat.
Combat challenge maps are ones where you basically fight four waves of thugs
that increase in number and difficulty. You earn points by fighting them with
many different techniques, with great combos, and with "style". You can also
get a lot of bonus points by meeting certain round requirements such as not
getting hit a single time or achieving a long combo streak. You finish each
challenge by beating all waves of thugs, and your final score is the total of
your score from all rounds. You can get a bronze, silver, or gold medal for
beating these challenges. You can also compare your score with the people on
Xbox Live.
Predator challenge maps are ones where you still fight enemies- but this time
with stealth. You'll be put in some of the game's memorable (large) rooms with
around 4-8 armed guards. You'll need to take them out with many different
techniques that are linked with stealth to complete each. The quicker the time
the better Batman you are. The times you've achieved can be showed online to be
compared with people on Xbox Live.
Challenges in general are a great addition to the game, giving you a reason to
play as Batman outside of the main story mode. To be specific you'll actually
need to solve the Riddler's Challenges to unlock challenges in the main menu,
so don't forget to look around and use detective mode to help you.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (n) Puzzle Solving
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
You'll come across a few "puzzles" when playing the main story mode, and these
are simply there to stop you from progressing. The puzzle may be as easy as
"search the correct switch and hit it with a batarang", or may be more challen-
ging and require you to think hard. My only suggestions for these 'puzzles' are
to keep an open mind and try using detective mode to help you. To be honest
there aren't many puzzles in the game, since the Riddler's Challenges already
pose you with enough.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (o) Riddler Trophies
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Probably considered the main collectable of the game, the Riddler Trophies are
hidden around Arkham Island waiting for you to uncover and pick up. They have
normal wooden trophy stands but the trophy itself is a green question mark.
These trophies are part of the Riddler's Challenges, and you can open the
Riddler's Challenges menu to check out how many trophies you've collected in
each area. You can also tell which ones will unlock a prize when you pick one
up. These also give you 200XP each, which is quite useful especially towards
the earlier stages of the game.
Note: Collecting these trophies count towards the percentage completion of the
      entire game.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (p) Riddler Challenges
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
A fairly large part of Batman: Arkham Asylum is about "Riddler's Challenges".
These challenges are a big load of different tests left by the famous Riddler
on the entirety of Arkham Island. They come in many different flavors, and
provide both side fun and challenge when you might want to take a rest from the
main story line. You can check which challenges are standing and which are
still pending in the Riddler's Challenges menu screen. Use [L] and [R] to cycle
through the different sections of Arkham Island to see the available challenges
there.
Note: If a particular challenge will unlock something once you solve it, you'll
      find an icon on the bottom left of the challenge in the challenges menu.
I've explained each type of challenge you can look for and solve below:
*******************
i- Riddler Trophies
*******************
These are basically collectable objects that look like a trophy in the shape
and form of a green question mark. They are usually hidden well or hard to
reach. Grab one of these to gain 200XP, and some even unlock prizes for you.
****************************
ii- Joker's Chattering Teeth
****************************
The chattering teeth are quite unique challenges. You'll find many chattering
teeth that make quiet laughing sounds on the grounds of Arkham Island, and
these can be targeted and destroyed by your batarang. Each Joker's chatter
teeth destroyed nets you 50XP, and also ends their taunting laughs.
************
iii- Riddles
************
The best part of the Riddler's Challenges are these riddles created by the
Riddler himself. Not only are these one of the most difficult to find, but also
they require you to solve the riddle in your head. It definitely helps if you
are a Batman fan, but even if you're not they're all fair and challenging. You
simply read the riddle in the Riddler's Challenges menu, try figure out which
area in this section of Arkham Island would 'house' this object (the answer to
the riddle). Then you should travel to that area, and when the area name
appears in the top center of the screen, you'll see the riddle written in green
beneath the area name if you've found the right area. If your chosen riddle
does not appear, then you might find another riddle in place or no riddle at
all. If a riddle does appear, you always know that this means the answer to the
riddle is found in this area. Once you're in the right area you can try solving
the riddle in your head, then searching for the correct object to carry out
Environmental Analysis on. You do this by holding [LB]. Batman will analyze the
things you are facing, and if something is the answer to the riddler a message
will either appear saying the subject is too small or obscured. If this happens
you'll need to move to a better position or get closer. If the message says
"no subject detected", then this means that what you're facing is no where near
the answer to a riddle. Overall these are very interesting things to solve when
you're not concentrating on the main story line. Each riddle solved gives you
200XP and might unlock a character bio or something.
**********************
iv- Patient Interviews
**********************
Tons of patients in the asylum have been interviewed, and some interviews have
even been recorded. These recorded ones are left around the island in places
where you might not notice them, but generally they aren't as well-hidden as
the riddler trophies. Once you find a patient interview, it'll be added to the
pages of the corresponding character in your Character Bio menu. You can listen
to the interviews by pressing (A) and stop them by pressing (A) again. If you
find an interview tape for any character, prepare to look for another four for
them. Yes, each character that has their interviews recorded will have five
interview tapes places around the island somewhere. Listening to these are not
only interesting but give you deep backstories of characters and to the main
story of the game. The interview tapes look like silver video tape rolls. Each
tape gifts you with 200XP.
********************
v- Spirits of Arkham
********************
These are similar to the interview tapes as each Spirit of Arkham found will
give you a recorded message to listen to in the Character Bio menu. These
"things" are much more difficult to locate however, although they look quite
big. They are basically a slab of concrete with a Spirit of Arkham symbol
printed on it. You can "find" these by looking in each nook and cranny of
Arkham Island, and once you find them you need to use the Environmental Analys-
is to verify you've found a Spirit of Arkham. You'll get recorded messages from
the spirits of the founder of Arkham Asylum with each that you find, as well as
quite a lot of XP points.
*************
vi- Mysteries
*************
There is only one mystery object in each section of Arkham Island, therefore
making them one of the most difficult things to acquire and locate. They are
simply "Secrets Maps" however, that reveal the locations of all the riddler
trophies in that particular section of Arkham Island (where you found the
mystery secrets map). These net you tons of XP however, and of course help you
quickly locate all those well-hidden riddler trophies in each section.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (q) Character Bios
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
A great feature in Batman: Arkham Asylum is your ability to access a menu of
Character Bios containing 42 great characters from Batman's universe. Many of
them you'll see in during the course of the main storyline, but many will not
appear as well. You'll start with around only three bios unlocked, and you'll
need to unlock the rest.
To unlock ones that appear in the storyline you simply have to progress to the
point where you encounter or talk about the particular character. For example
when you talk to people about Zsasz early on in the game, you'll immediately
unlock his bio. If you don't talk to people about him, once you complete the
first little section on him you'll unlock him.
The other characters are only unlocked by you solving riddles given by the
Riddler (in form of the Riddler's Challenges)*. The bio you unlock will always
be associated with the riddle you've solved, and sometimes the riddles fit not
only well with the bio you unlock but in interesting ways as well.
These bios are all fully detailed with facts, info, and attributes of each
character(s). You'll get facts like their height, occupation, real name, and so
on. The info you get from them is a large paragraph of backstory of the
character. And as for the attributes page, you'll find all the powers and
special traits of each character noted there. Each bio also comes with a unique
comic art drawing of each character (with color).
Certain characters will also have a patient interviews page. This page only
appears if this character has recorded interview tapes that can be found in the
game, and only if you've already found at least one. Each of these characters
will have five interview tapes that can be found in the game. These are also
part of the Riddler's Challenges.
All character bios are not only a great read, but provide a lot of backstory
and information on Batman's universe. And let's face it, a lot of you that was
initially not a Batman fan will very likely become one at the end of this
superb game. This means these character bios will get you right into the vast
universe of Batman, and make you an instand knowledgeable fan.
*NOTE: Detailed information on the Riddler's Challenges can be found in the
       previous part of this chapter, part "p) Riddler's Challenges".
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (r) Recorded Messages
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
As already explained in part p, Riddler's Challenges, recorded messages are
either patient interview tapes or Spirits of Arkham messages. Both these types
of messages are left as a type of audio logs, so you can listen to any of your
collected ones at anytime from the Character Bio menu.
Patient Interview tapes are recorded interviews of those villains that seem to
be more troublesome. These tapes have been left and hidden around Arkham Island
for you to find and listen to. Each interview tape will be added to the charac-
ter bio page of the character who's done that particular interview. So you can
find the tapes in the respective patients anytime.
The Spirits of Arkham also provide recorded messages. You'll need to find slabs
that have the Spirit of Arkham symbols on them and scan them with environmental
analysis to acquire the messages. You can listen to all of the Spirits of
Arkham messages in it's own character bio page. There are more than twenty of
these in the game, so there is a fair amount of back story to Arkham Asylum
here.
These tapes are recorded with great voice acting and are a joy to listen to.
Even if you don't really like to listen to tapes, you'll find these things are
great for filling in the stories of Batman's universe and your current story
line in Batman: Arkham Asylum. They also create another layer of atmosphere to
certain characters in the game, so do listen to some from time to time.
 (a) Introduction
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
The characters in the main game are all darker and scarier than in the comics
and/or movies. They are also much cooler and interesting in some ways, and it
seems to me that there are more than 50 of these different unique characters.
So I've created this chapter that includes every single character in the game
explained in quite some detail. If you want the most detail however, read the
character bios included in the game. For those that are a bit lazier or want to
save the bios, you can read my personal takes on these characters. These are
brief but can show you how in-depth and varied the characters in the game are.
And don't worry, I've done more than just play this game twice to gain some
knowledge on these characters. Many I'v read about in multiple comic books.
Note: At this time I haven't finished writing about all the characters, so what
      you find below is not all the characters in the game. By the time I think
      I've covered them all, I'll remove this message. Thanks guys.
!SPOILERS! - Watch for the spoilers in the next couple of parts. It won't be
             the info that I give which spoils it (I didn't really include any
             spoilers for character info), but the NAMES of the characters and
             when they appear and stuff. I recommend you only read the ones you
             have seen in the game.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (b) The Good People
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
The heroes, the good-hearted, the kind, and the innocent. All of the characters
included in this section have a kind heart and do not wish to mess with evil in
any way. Batman is of course here, and other well-known guys such as the tough
Commissioner Gordan (and does he look tough in the game!) and Oracle. Read on
to find out more about them and many other 'good guys'.
******
BATMAN
******
The main character in the game, and one of Gotham's only good super heroes.
Bruce Wayne witnessed his parents death during his early childhood, and sought
revenge for criminals by training extensively in all forms of martial arts.
Later on he decided to conceal his identity as Batman, and used combat as well
as detective and stealth skills to take down enemies. He's a vigilante, and has
a policy of keeping the bad guys alive after he defeats or captures them.
Aside from being trained to physical perfection, Batman has all sorts of useful
gadgets and skills to aid him during his operations. This time round he's been
tricked by Joker, and now he needs to restore order in Arkham Asylum, possibly
remeeting many of his previous rivals. During the course of the game you'll
realise that this is Batman's worse night as he's sent around Arkham Island for
hours and hours and saving tons of lives and risking his just to try recapture
Joker- and this time, for good.
*******************
COMMISSIONER GORDAN
*******************
One of the truly good and effective members of the police force in Gotham City,
Commissioner James Gordan has served justice for many years to the best of his
will. He was one of the first people to trust what Batman was doing, and soon
joined forces with the caped crusader.
Although he's a middle aged man, Gordan is very skilled in hand-to-hand combat
and dealing with firearms. He also seems to be the only vigilante (along with
Batman) out there that knows when to make the right decision. He's the father
of Barbara Gordan, the young girl who eventually became Batman's important
ally.
Although his real name is James, most people refer to him as Jim Gordan. In the
game Jim will help Batman in his attempt to stop Joker, but will he succeed?
******
ORACLE
******
Barbara Gordan is the daughter of Commissioner Gordan, and had once concealed
her identity as Batgirl in order to aid Batman. She was a helpful assistant for
many years, until the Joker shot her spine and paralyzed her from the knee
down. This injury attached her to a wheelchair forever, but she never stopped
helping Batman. She's since become Oracle, who's job is to analyze many situat-
ions outside of Batman's vincinity. She has a great headquarters in the Clock
Tower, where she has everything she needs to assist Batman on his missions to
serve justice. She is known to have the best memory in the world, and is among
the world's best hackers. In the game the Oracle will help you by reporting you
a lot of useful information and keep you up-to-date on what's around you.
************
QUINCY SHARP
************
Quincy Sharp is an old fellow that has recently become Warden of the Arkham
Asylum. Although his position is a high ranking one, he wants to rank even
higher by trying out for mayor of Gotham City. He's currently carrying out many
different measures and methods to improve Arkham Asylum, so that he might
improve his chances into winning as mayor of Gotham.
*************
ZACH FRANKLIN
*************
A regular guard in the Asylum that seems nice enough but not confident enough
to keep calm when Joker takes over the asylum. You'll see him a few times in
the game, always willing to help but always nervous and worried. Seem's to be
one of Aaron Cash's personal guards.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (c) The Evil People
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
The slayers, the murderers, the evil, and the totally corrupted. The characters
you find in this section are all either downright evil or linked to 'the bad'
in some kind of way. The Joker is here, and so are many others such as the
scarred Zsasz and deadly Killer Croc. Read on to learn more about them and all
the other crazed evil-doers that have served in Arkham Asylum at least once.
*********
THE JOKER
*********
The Joker is a crazy lunatic that has managed to completely control himself.
He likes killing, stealing, and messing with Batman for fun, fearing absolutely
no consequences for the things he does. He's not even afraid of death.
Serving as one of Batman's oldest rivals, the Joker has escaped the asylum and
been brought back many times. Although he may seem quite weak, he's strong in
hand-to-hand combat and is an expert with all sorts of weapons. He's also famo-
us for using his Joker Gas weapon that makes the victims die with a deadly grin
on their face. He seems to be completely human however, with no special powers
whatsoever.
In the game Joker has managed to escape again, and seems to have launched an
attack at the mayor of Gotham City. Batman successfully arrests him however,
and brings him back to Arkham Asylum. He soons breaks free and reveals his plan
of taking over the Asylum and trapping Batman within it, creating a great
problem for the Dark Knight. He'll be the main protagonist for the entire game.
************
HARLEY QUINN
************
Originally a doctor, Harlet Quinzel joined the asylum to start working in a
different environment. Her first patient assigned was the Joker, however, and
soon she was fooled by his evil but cunning mind. She changed her appearance
and in a way fell in love with the Joker, serving him as best as she can and
making sure his plans always went well. She is a highly skilled acrobat and can
get around the environment in a very fast speed.
In Batman: Arkham Asylum she'll be the Joker's right hand girl and temporarily
take on the Warden's role. She'll have a lot of control over the asylum for
most of the game, and will prove to be as big of a threat as the Joker himself.
Soon you'll find that you can't wait to take this clown down.
************
VICTOR ZSASZ
************
A murderer of pure evil, Victor Zsasz craves for killing any type of person he
comes across. The worst part of it is that he adds cut marks on his body in the
form of a tally chart to keep his kill count. Aside from being bald and being
able to handle a knife particularly well, there isn't many other outstanding
characteristics of Zsasz. But then again... his cut marks. No one will ever be
able to forget them once they see it. He's saved a particular spot for Batman
as well, and is very excited about the day he kills him and completes his
"artwork".
You'll meet him early on in the game, but he'll be presented as a low threat
rival in terms of combat. He's just a psychotic man that loves killing that's
all, but you'll have to deal with him messing with other people's safety. The
way the developers designed him was a darker and meaner look in my opinion,
which fits the mood with the rest of the game perfectly.
****
BANE
****
Born in a prison to serve his father's sentence, Bane had a hard time growing
up. In the prison of Pena Duro he has trained himself in the prison gym and
also read all the books he could get his hands on. This means that the way he
is often portrayed as a large dumb but tough brawler is not exactly right, he
is actually quite smart. When affected by Venom Toxin however he undergoes a
large change in height, strength, and endurance.
Bane makes a great appearance in the game, although you do not really get to
see his intelligent side. His brutal side will prove as a tough opponent howev-
er, so prepare for your first encounter with Bane. He looks very similar to
the comic book counter part in the game, but the muscles are much more detailed
and appear more threatening.
Now that you've probably read all the general information chapters, or used it
in some extent to help you get ready for the game, we can start the game. This
section includes everything for the main story of the game. As of now there is
only one chapter, but later on there will be at least one more addition of
a "SIDE STUFF" chapter. This will cover all the side collecting, riddle solving
and all that from the main game.
The "Walkthrough" chapter will cover the entire walkthrough of the game, and
please don't use it unless you are reading on sections of the game you've
ALREADY completed or you do actually need help. If you don't need help don't
spoil the game by reading further into the game. But if help is needed I'm here
to hold your hand from beginning to finish with this fantastic story mode.
This is probably the best single-player experience I've ever had in a game,
probably only Oblivion rivaling with it. But as Oblivion is crazy in length,
it's an amazing achievement by this game to even come close, let alone almost
surpass the quality of it. Once again feel lucky you've got this rare gem-
we'll probably have to wait quite sometime before someone else pulls off a
superb, quality superhero game like this again.
 (a) Introduction
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Finally you've reached the main chapter of the guide- the walkthrough for the
game. If you have already starteed the game for a long time and require help,
you have also come to the right place. Simply scroll down to the section you
need if that's the case.
I've separated the walkthrough into parts that divide up the sections in the
game. So part (a) will be on section one of the game, part (b) will be on
section two of the game, and so on and so forth.
Within each section of the game are numerous different areas. Each area will
bring up a title that will appear as you enter the room/area, meaning each
place has a unique name. This allowed me to divide each section of the game
into the areas by using the area names. So if you ever need any help with a
specific area, simply search (ctrl + f) for the area name and you will find it
immediately.
Finally, I will be trying my best to cover the game in detail but also try
leaving out some of the routes for you to explore. And even then there are many
places I won't touch on simply because the story doesn't bring you there, so
feel free to roam the island at any point. I might point out a collectable or
two at times, but I'll leave  most those for another chapter in the future.
Now then, press (A) on 'Start New Game' and let the fun begin.
Note: This walkthrough was done by playing on the "Normal" difficulty.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (b) Recapture
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
The game begins with an extremely nice cutscene, so sit back and enjoy it.
Batman has just caught The Joker once again, and is bringing him back to Arkham
Asylum to be locked up. You will see him speeding through Gotham City and into
Arkham Island in his Batmobile. Once they reach the asylum, Batman pulls along
The Joker into the Intensive Treatment building. Many fellow guards will be
there to greet him, showing us their hate for Joker. Frank Boles is especially
pissed off and threatens The Joker while grabbing his suit. They then lock him
onto a trolley thing and start pulling him along towards the cells. Batman asks
a guard if Commissioner Gordan is here, and they say he is. The game will then
zoom out it's camera and give you control of Batman.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (c) Intensive Treatment
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
When you first control Batman you will have to follow the guards bringing Joker
slowly to his cell to be locked up.
  ===============================
  [i] - Intensive Treatment Lobby
  ===============================
Just follow the guards and Joker as they progress along the gritty paths of
the intensive treatment lobby. You will most likely enjoy getting use to moving
Batman with this Resident Evil-like camera, and also take in the wonderful
graphics and sound effects, creating an excellent atmosphere. The credits will
also be appearing at the top right hand corner, read them if they interest you.
The next parts will basically serve as a nice introduction to the setting and
the story, as you bring Joker to his cell.
Keep walking and enter the scanning room along with the group. The guards will
scan everyone for illegal objects. Red light will then suddenly flash, and the
guards announce that someone has something they shouldn't have on them. Joker
will start laughing and hint that it's Batman's fault (since he brought his
grappel and batarangs with him). The guards don't mess with Batman though, as
he's here to help, and instead scans the Joker specifically. The scan on him is
screen, and the door opens. They will walk out and continue along the lobby
floors. Follow them.
Soon you will reach an elevated platform and they will walk on it to wait for
you. Walk on to join them and one of the guards will lower the platform. After
this continue to follow them and listen to The Joker's funny and wonderfully
written chatter. When you reach a door with a lot of guarded men, you will need
to wait for a doctor to check Joker's status. Notice the inmates cheering for
Joker. When the inspection is done, you will move through a door and come to
an area where a bunch of guards are armed and ready for something.
The guards will block the way forward, so stop and watch what's happening. An
elevator will rise up, and Joker will greet Killer Croc. Yes, it's him. He will
get out of the elevator and stand up, huge and terrifying. After sniffing
around he claims he's got Batman's scent, and will hunt him down. The guards
get ready to shoot him if he does anything out of the ordinary though. When he
taunts Batman some more they shock him through his control collar. He will then
move on.
Follow the group of guards and Joker into the elevator which Killer Croc rode
up, and listen to Warden Sharp's announcements. A few seconds later the entire
elevator will stop and the lights will turn off, Joker's laugh echoing all
around. When the electricity returns, Batman will be holding Joker's neck. Just
to be sure. When the elevator reaches the bottom, head out and a cutscene will
ensue.
Batman will meet Commissioner Gordan and greet like old pals. It seems like The
Joker had done something to the Mayor of Gotham City to attract Batman to go
catch him. When a couple of guards bring the Joker in to the prison cell areas,
they stop Batman as he'll piss off the more violent inmates. Bad choice. Within
a few steps in, The Joker breaks free and chokes a guard out, while Batman
starts punching through the window to get down to him before it's to late. When
Batman breaks through Joker runs to the end of the room and welcomes Batman to
his madhouse. It was an inside job! The Joker has done it again.
  ====================
  [ii] - Holding Cells
  ====================
Immediately after the cutscene you will find yourself in the center of the
Holding Cells, where many inmates are kept. Joker has trapped you in here and
released a few thugs from their cells.
Use (X) to start bashing them around, watching Batman's awesome moves unleashed
on the thugs. Simply point at the enemy you want to hit and keep using (X) and
you'll take them all out in no time. The Joker will announce "Round 2" and
release more inmates. This time the game will introduce you the counter move.
Use (Y) to counter incoming enemy attacks. Whenever you see lightning bolts
above an enemies head, it means they are going to attack you. So press (Y) to
counter these attacks.
Once they are down Joker will be gone already, and Gordan will call out to you
from the top. Joker will then appear on the TV screens to taunt you. He ends
the talk with the line "then why don't you just come find me..." The force
field holding you in ahead will then be opened, allowing you to progress. There
is a Riddler Trophy somewhere around, if you want to find it before you leave.
When you walk out of the area, you will find a room to the right with Joker
Chatter Teeths on the ground. These are one of many Riddler Challenges (to
destroy certain numbers of Joker Chatter Teeth). Here the game will teach you
how to bring out your batarang and use them. Follow the instructions and aim
then destroy the teeth with your batarangs. Breaking these Chatter Teeth will
also net you 50XP a piece.
Once you break them all, exit the door and head left to continue following The
Joker.
  ============================
  [iii] - Processing Corridors
  ============================
You will enter the "Processing Corridors" here. Keep walking and you will see
many fallen guards- victims of Joker. The game will tell you how to run here-
just hold (A) and move (L) to run. Keep running and soon you will meet two more
Blackgate Thugs- the guys Joker sent to be locked up here on purpose. Take them
out easily, and also try out the ground takedown with [R] + (Y). Take the left
path once you beat them as you will see a guard calling out to you. There will
be some Chatter Teeth, break them and talk to the guard called Eddie Barlow.
He will explain how the door is jammed shut, and he needs to try opening it
with your help. He gets a radio call however, and it seems like a few guards
need your assistance in the Patient Pacification Chamber. Eddie tells you that
you can reach there by heading back and continuing to the end of the corridors.
When the talk ends head in the direction he showed you, and Batman will put two
fingers to his right ear to contact Oracle (Gears of War style), who is your
assistant that is a computer genious. She asks for her father, Commissioner
Gordan, and Batman says he's safe. You will then unlock Oracle's Bio. After the
talk head to the end of the corridors and into the next room.
  ===================================
  [iv] - Patient Pacification Chamber
  ===================================
You will see two guards standing far ahead, make your way to them. Talk to the
guy called Zach Franklin and he will tell you that Zsasz has gotten out and has
taken hostage one of his guards. Batman says he will get him. You will also see
a scene where Zsasz has a remote control that can zap a guard he's strapped on
the chair with a single press. To save him, you're going to have to take Zsasz
out without him noticing.
Continue past the guards into the stair ways, and head up the flight of stairs.
Walk to the balcony and feel free to talk to any of the guards and the doctor
here. They will have something to say about the guard taken hostage and unlock
the Bio of Zsacz. The game will tell you how to turn on the detective mode at
this point, do it and you will find that the screen is filtered with a blue
tint. You can now see through walls and find enemies easily, while being able
to see their condition (calm, nervous, terrified) and the weapons they're
wielding. Points of interest in the environment will also be pointed out for
you in this mode.
You will soon notice the gargoyles sticking out of the walls around the room.
Detective mode will point them out and explain how they can help you. You can
use your grappel to rappel up and use them as vantage points to stalk your
enemies without them noticing you. Look at a gargoyle you want to grappel to,
then press [RB] when the [RB] button symbol appears on the gargoyle. You will
zip onto it quickly.
Use detective mode to keep track of Zsasz's position, and travel from gargoyle
to gargoyle with your grappel to get in a good position to strike that badass.
There is a number of ways to defeat him, but basically you have to remember not
to let him see Batman, or him will shock the guard dead and you will fail your
mission. The simplest approach would probably be to look at him and press (X)
to use the glide kick move. Once you knock him down, you'll need to take him
out with a ground takedown however, or he'll get back up soon. Once he's out,
a cutscene will initiate to introduce Harley Quinn.
In the cutsene she shows you that she's tied up Warden Sharp, and that she's
taken over his job... basically. She explains how Joker has now come back here
to rule, and that Batman's his 'guest of honor'. Damn Harley. She'll then break
the screen to shut the chatter. The cutscene will then end and Oracle will
contact you.
She says that Joker has set up bombs around the city, threatening guards that
if anyone sets foot on the island he'd detonate them. Batman says he's just
using it to scare the guards, and when Oracle asks how he knows, he says he
knows him. When you regain full control of Batman you can search around the
room to talk to the doctor, some guards, and find some hidden stuff. Once you
are done here find a vent near the TV screens you Harley used to contact you
and head through. You will soon come to another Riddler Trophy, pick it up and
continue. You will soon reach an opening- drop down to reach the back out on to
the Processing Corridors.
  ==========================
  [v] - Processing Corridors
  ==========================
You will find Eddie Barlow here again, but it seems like he's been able to
unlock the door. You will, through the window, many guards choking at what
Batman describes as "Joker Gas". Seems like they are in danger. Eddie Barlow
will plead you to save them, but Batman says anyone smelling Joker Gas is bound
to die. But it might not be too late for some, so let's save some guards now.
Look above and you will find an opening for you to grappel up. Press [RB] to
use the grappel then press (A) to pull yourself up into Decontamination.
  ======================
  [vi] - Decontamination
  ======================
You'll find a guard hanging onto a ledge nearby, quickly run to him and help
him up by pressing (A) next to him. The game will teach you here that you can
hold (A) and use {L} to run towards the ledge and Batman will automatically
jump across the gap. You will find another guard here calling out to his friend
higher up. If you talk to him he'll tell you that Steve needs help.
Grapple up to the guard clinging onto the ledge and press (A) to save him from
falling. The guards will be grateful for your rescue, but needs you to help
them turn on the control panel to initiate the filter system. This will get rid
of all the Joker Gas that's flood the area below. If you jump down, you'll need
to quickly press [RB] to grapple back up before Batman is completely poisoned.
Jump off the ledge and glide down to the platform ahead, towards the end of the
room. One of Joker's henchmen is clinging on a ledge for his life here, and you
can choose to leave him or to save him. Saving him earns you an achievement
though, so I suggest you do it. Help him up by pressing (A), and when you do
that Batman will also immediately knock him unconcious. Great job, Bats.
You can now search for the control panel that'll turn on the fans in the room,
using detective mode to help you locate it. It'll be highlighted orange in
detective mode. Once you find the control panel aim your batarang at it and
when you've got a lock on the panel toss the batarang. You'll knock the switch
on, which in turn initiates the filter system. Within seconds the room will be
Joker Gas-free, and the guards will thank you dearly.
Now you can drop or glide down below. There are quite a few Chatter Teeth
around here if you want to get them. There's also a hidden Riddler Trophy
nearby if you want to look for one. Once you're done with the area, leave the
Decontamination room by heaidng for the exit door at the end of the room.
  =====================
  [vii] - Transfer Loop
  =====================
Head forwards and you'll come to an intersection. Take any path you want, but
if you take the left side you'll run into two Blackgate Thugs immediately, and
if you take the right path you'll meet them a bit later. Deal with them quickly
and remember to counter their attacks to make sure your health is completely
full. You're going to need a full health bar for the next section.
You'll find some chatter teeth further down the corridor. Head to the end of
the corridor and towards the door that leads to Secure Treatment Transit and a
cutscene will start.
  ==================================
  [viii] - Secure Treatment Transfer
  ==================================
Batman will meet Joker again here. He'll be standing above a cage with a large
beast like thing in it. Batman will toss a batarang, but Joker avoids the
batarang easily. He then releases the large beast thing, and it cries out in
rage. Get ready, because you're going to fight this thing.
************************
Boss Battle: Venom Beast
************************
Your first boss fight comes quite early in the game. This beast is actually
(and obviously) someone that has been drugged with venom, a toxin that can
improve one's strength, size, and defense drastically. So this guy won't be too
easy for you.
The Venom Beast has a few attacks, the most common being his charge attack. To
avoid this attack, take the game's advice to double-tap (A) in one direction
to evade towards that side. Use this evade control to avoid being rammed by
the beast, or you'll loose quite a bit of health. Other attacks that it'll
perform is the guard toss and the shockwave punch. The guard toss is a move in
which he picks up a random dead guard off the floor, and tosses it at you. This
can be evaded by double-tapping (A). The shockwave punch will only be used if
you get too close to him. This move is basically a punch on the ground that
creates a few shockwaves.
There are a couple of ways to take this baddie out. You can do it the old
fashioned way, but only if you have enough health, or you can do it the way
that involves tactics. The old fashioned way is to make him charge at you
while you just try avoiding him. Once he misses you you can go up to him and
start punching him like crazy. Quickly move away after a few punches though,
as he'll hit you with the shockwave punch if you don't. By the way you can
check on the health level of the boss on the top right hand corner.
The strategic way is to take out your batarang, and wait for him to charge at
you. Once he does, toss the batarang at his face and this'll temporarily blind
him during his charge, which makes him slam himself into the wall if you move
away in time. This'll take a lot of his health that way. After doing this
three or four times you can easily go finish him off.
Once the boss is knocked out, a cutscene will show Joker leaving the room with
a transit system, leaving us stranded here. A guard will call out to you from
inside a room telling you that you come if you don't want to fight more venom
henchmen. Talk to the guard to initiate a scene where Joker shows you the
video of Frank Boles betraying us!! You see him knock Commissioner Gordan from
behind. Looks like the Joker has convinced another person to join his side.
Here you'll get two new (and your first set of) objectives to follow:
  => PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: Rescue Commissioner Gordan
  => NEW OBJECTIVE: Locate and analyze the Holding Cells for evidence
At this point (after beating this boss) everyone should have at least gained
enough for XP to fill the XP circle for one round. This means you should have
X1 Upgrade Points left, so go upgrade! Choose wisely during your first few
upgrades because those are the ones that will get you started in the game.
You can now start travelling back to the Holding Cells by exiting the door back
to the Transfer Loop area.
  ====================
  [ix] - Transfer Loop
  ====================
Follow the paths to the west side of the Transfer Loop area. As you approach
the door to the Holding Cells, you'll hear two thugs engaged in a conversation.
Listen to them blabber and then go and take them out. Since there is only two
thug inmates here, you should consider making your kills creative such as using
a ground takedown in the end or known them out with your batarang. Once they're
down head through the door to the Holding Cells.
  ===================
  [x] - Holding Cells
  ===================
Once you enter the area you'll recieve a new objective:
  => NEW OBJECTIVE: Scan the crime scene area to isolate a forensic trail
Make your way to the room where Frank Boles betrayed us and knocked Gordan out.
This side room will be marked as the crime scene area for now as this was where
the crime had taken place. If you turn on detective mode within this room you
will enter a first person mode which is actually Batman using his detective
scanner. You'll be able to see the crime scene borders in an orange borderline,
and so you know the exact areas you need to search to find evidence.
Search the room for something to track Frank or Gordan with, so that you'll be
able to follow a trail to them. After looking around a b it you should be able
to a whiskey flask which Frank was drinking from before... That careless basta-
rd, leaving a perfect way for Batman to track you down. Aim your detective
scanner over the whiskey flask and hold (A) to scan it. Once you complete the
scanning Batman will use the results to track the whiskey trail so that it'll
lead you to Frank Boles, and ultimately, Gordan.
Your 'scan the crime scene area to isolate a forensic trail' objective will be
now completed, and a new one will take it's place.
  => NEW OBJECTIVE: Track Gordan's movements by following Boles' whiskey trail
Turn on detective mode and you'll see that the tint of the detectice mode has
changed from blue to purple. Now any whiskey remnants matching the one Frank
had drunk will be highlighted and you can use this to track Gordan. Follow the
few whiskey trails and enter the door back to Transfer Loop.
  ====================
  [xi] - Transfer Loop
  ====================
Keep following the traces of whiskey here and you'll find yourself heading to
the Secure Transit area. You'll recieve a call from Oracle here, listen to it
before entering back into Secure Transit. There should be a few Joker Chatter
Teeth for you to destroy before you enter the door as well.
  ======================
  [xii] - Secure Transit
  ======================
Walk forwards and you'll enter a cutscene. Harley Quinn will drop the elevator
here, not allowing you to take it up and follow her and Frank Boles.
When the cutscene ends you'll find a guard named Henry Smith sitting on a
chair. You can talk to him to gain some insight into the situation. After talk-
ing to him you should search around here for a Interview Tape.
Since the elevator isn't operatable any more, you'll need to climb up "the old
fashioned way", as Batman rightly puts it. Grapple up to the platform above,
and then grapple up again to the next higher platform. Here you can jump across
the gap to grab onto a ledge up ahead.
Here the game teaches you how to shimmy- simply move {L} left and right to
shimmy around the edges while hanging off them. Shimmy to the right here and
then press (A) to pull yourself up to the open space once you get there. You'll
find yourself inside a vent here, so follow it to the end as Joker uses the
intercom to speak to you.
He'll patch over the audio feeds of what's happening outside with Frank and
Harley Quinn. Frank is using his identity to trick the guards into moving away
and then killing them when they turn their backs on him. What a dickhead. You
will hear that Harley is using him to clear the path ahead so that they can
escape with Gordan in hand.
Continue through the vents until you reach an area with a block that you can
crouch under. Crouch under it and walk through, and you'll be able to stand on
the other side again. Use (A) to jump and climb up onto the ledge and shimmy
your way around. Take the left path ahead and look for a grapple point up high.
Grapple up to it and you'll find yourself in a new open area.
Here the game notifies you of the Environmental Scan, you can use it (hold
[LB]) to scan the Chronicle of Arkham next to you. This will add the Spirit of
Arkham character to your character bio, and you can listen to these collected
messages any time.
At this point head towards the right side of the area and you'll be able to
grapple up and out of the area. You'll find a big group of Thug Inmates here.
Stun one from afar with your batarang and then quickly engage them all. Take
them out by carefull placing your strikes and countering when needed.
Once they're down, head for the only way out- the visable vent. Pull it off
with (A), then crawl through until your reach Cell Block Transfer.
  ============================
  [xiii] - Cell Block Transfer
  ============================
Break off the vent door at the end and then walk out. Oracle will contact you
here, and you'll hear Batman say that Joker seems to have armed some of these
men. Turn on detective mode to find that they are armed with assualt rifles
and shotguns, and so Batman will calibrate his cowl's vision mode so that all
armed enemies will be highlighted in red from now on. Use this feature to help
immediately differentiate between enemies wielding or not wielding a gun in the
future.
A direct assault will be crazy, as you can see in detective mode that there
are three Armed Thugs waiting aroudn the corner. It'll be a much better idea
to go around them. Look around and above and you'll soon locate a gargoyle up
high. Use your grapple to get up onto it, and a very cool Batman theme will
start playing. Swing from gargoyle to gargoyle here until you get behind these
men.
Drop down silently from the gargoyle by tapping (A). Hold [R] to crouch down
and sneak behind the Armed Thug nearest to you. If you sneak behind any of the
ones further away, the ones next to him will notice you even when you sneak.
So perform the silent takedown on the thug away from the other two, and then
take out the next closest, then finally take down the last. Damn that was
satisfying- finaly a batman game that allows us to take guys out like the dark
knight would himself.
Head back once you've made them all unconcious, and you'll find a staircase
leading up into a control room. You'll find a lone Armed Thug here if you
turn on detective mode. Climb up the staircase but not into the room. At the
top hold [R] then press (A) to perform the corner cover move. You can now spy
on this thug as he speaks to Joker through the tv screen. If you appear now
Joker will notice you and the Armed Thug will turn around and shoot you a few
good times before you will be able to attack him.
Stay back until he finished the conversation, then toss a batarang at his head.
Once you do that quickly run to him and perform a ground take down to take him
out. Joker will still notice you but says he won't alert any of his men so that
it would be more interesting... That's good for us anyway.
Look for the vent in this control room and rip it off. Head through and make
your way to the end while listening to the Joker telling everyone is the
Intensive Treatment building to stay alert of a person dressed like the Bat.
You'll reach the Intensive Treatment Lobby at the end of the ventilation shaft.
  =================================
  [xiv] - Intensive Treatment Lobby
  =================================
Through the vent you'll find an Armed Thug examining a dead asylum guard. At
this point you can immediately start breaking the vent off the wall with (A),
or you can wait until the Armed Thug walks away. Either way get out of the vent
quickly and look up to find a host of gargoyles that would assist you in the
next section dearly. Grappel up to any one of them and then turn on detective
mode to study the enemies in the area. Great, we have three Armed Thugs patrol-
ling this area.
In these types of stealth sections you are free to choose how you want to take
these guys out. No matter which tactics and methods you use in the end however,
I strongly suggest you do not try taking on more than one armed thug at a time.
Try grappeling around the room, spying on enemy movements and plan to pick off
each one by one. That will keep your health bar high and avoid the risk of ever
being caught by any enemies. Speaking of your health bar, you should know by
now that gaining experience fills up your health bar as well. The thing is for
each kill you make in these stealth sections the game will show how much XP you
get, but not actually add it to the total until all enemies are defeated in the
area. So don't get into a situation where you've only defeated one of five
enemies and have lost almost all your health- you'll be stuck with that tiny
bar of health for the rest of the section.
A good way to start is to watch for thugs walking on their own and also on
raised platforms. These are good targets simply because if they're up high it
would be a harder job for the other guys to climb up to see him. So look around
this area for any armed thugs isolated and walking on the catwalks or near the
office building. If you glide onto the office building roof, you can walk onto
the glass part of the roof and press (Y) to take down any thug standing below
it.
Once you pick off two guys, you'll find the last armed thug to become terrified
(but only if he's both unconcious bodies of his thug mates). You can check if
he is by using your detective mode to check the armed thug's condition and
heart rate. If he is terrified, simply glide down in front of him and he should
cover his face and walk back in a cowering way. At this point you can give the
thug a few good punches to end it all.
Once all three goons are down, Joker will laugh and just send three more to
your place. Once the cutscene finishes Batman will appear atop the office
building undetected. You can either stay here to spy on them or go up to one of
the gargoyles. Try utilizing different tactics to take these trio of armed guys
than you did last time. If you have purchased the Inverted Takedown upgrade
already, be sure to try it out here if you haven't already. If you stay on the
lookout and use some strategy, soon the three armed thugs will be taken out.
You can now resume following the whiskey trail. Follow it down to the ground
floor of the area and then up the ladder to the platform. At the end of the
platform here you will find the trail ends. It's obvious to see why, as you'll
find Frank Boles dead and tied up with a sign put up in front of him. Looks
like Joker didn't need him anymore after all.
  => OBJECTIVE
     COMPLETED: Track Gordan's movements by following Boles' whiskey trail
Suddenly you'll recieve a radio signal call from The Riddler, Edward Nigma, and
he will tell you of his challenges on the island. He's left you 240 challenges
that come in various types, such as destroying Joker Teeth, finding Riddler
Trophies, and so on (some of which you've already been doing). One of the most
interesting types of challenges that he's left are the actual riddles, and here
he'll present you with your first.
He says, "Don't cut yourself on this sharply observed portrait".
This is the only riddle challenge in the game that is compulsory, all the
others are there for you to take on at your own pace and leisure. If you do not
want the answer to this riddle than do not continue reading the next paragraph.
Once you've solved it yourself come back and read on. If you don't mind, just
read on.
If you walk back towards the end of this platform where the ladders are and
look on the left side, you will find a large portrait painting of Warden Sharp.
Yep, that's the answer to the riddle. Just hold [LB] here to use Environmental
Analysis to confirm that you've chosen this as your answer to the riddle. You
will get a message that confirms you've solved it now.
An asylum guard will open the door for Batman here, and you can go up to engage
a conversation. After talking to him you'll recieve a new objective.
  => NEW OBJECTIVE: Escape from Intensive Treatment to the island surface
Looks like it's time to get out of this place. Follow the pathway past the
asylum guard and make your way down the flight of stairs. You'll find a metal
double-door here, open it to enter the Utility Corridor.
  =======================
  [xv] - Utility Corridor
  =======================
Walk through this corridor and you'll reach a locked room. At the end you'll
locate a vent, so use Batman's incredible strength to pull it off the wall.
Crawl into the vent and make your way to the end of it where you'll emerge in a
cave-like place. Open the vent cover here and continue walking forwards. You'll
find a high ledge that you can grapple up to here, so press [RB] to zip up onto
it. Walk forward and a cutscene will engage showing you the gorgeously crafted
Arkham Island accompanied with a great music score. Yes, you've finally gotten
out of the damn building!
  => OBJECTIVE
     COMPLETED: Escape from Intensive Treatment to the island surface
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (d) Arkham Island
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
  =================
  [i] - Arkham East
  =================
You'll be in Arkham East when you first get out, which is one of three large
outdoor areas of Arkham Island. Look down below and you'll see how big and well
crafted this section of the island is. Here you can perform the glide move all
the way down to the grounds below. If you want to continue with the story I
suggest you direct Batman's glide towards the gate below with the two guards
standing next to it. If you want to run around and explore the area feel free
to do it- you can also speak to various guards for background story here.
When you reach the ground you'll have heard Joker saying that he knows from
Harley that the batmobile is still parked in Arkham North. He'll then order the
inmates to destroy it or "obliterate" it as he puts it. Looks like we have some
more justice to serve in Arkham North now. Right after Joker finishes speaking
through the speakers Batman will contact Oracle through his earpiece. He'll
tell Oracle to turn the automated defense systems of the batmobile off and
Oracle will acknowledge. She'll also send you the schematics of the entire Isl-
and from now on mark objectives on your map. You will then recieve a new
objectice- check this out by pressing the BACK button.
  => NEW OBJECTIVE: Protect the Batmobile
Now I remind you again you can go off exploring and talking to guards at any
point now. You can also go hunting for riddler trophies and chatter teeth, or
try solving some riddles here and there. Once you're ready to continue the main
story however, read on.
Head for the gate/door guarded by two asylum guards. You can talk to them here.
Enter the door and you'll find an ambulance with a deceased guard next to it
and another guard examining him. If you turn on your detective vision at this
point you'll detect two armed hostiles behind the ambulance. It's obvious that
they were ordered by the Joker to stop you from heading through the door behind
them that leads to Arkham North. Well we're going to take them out without them
even noticing.
Walk past the ambulance and look up at long rocky ledge. Choose any point to
shoot your grapnel gun at and grappel up to the ledge. Pull yourself onto it
and drop down behind the guards. From here on make sure you keep your right
finger on [R] to ensure remain stealthy. Sneak behind the thug closest to you
and press (Y) to deliver a silent takedown. The thug a bit further away will
not notice as you've taken down his partner silently. You can now repeat this
process with him or in fact just beat him up with fists as there aren't any
more armed thugs around.
Once they both have been taken out turn around to locate the door and gate to
Arkham North. Head through it and you'll arrive in Arkham North and immediate-
ly find your batmobile up ahead being smashed by a bunch of thugs.
 (a) Introdcution
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Let's face it, for an action game to be good, it's got to have some decent
enemies. In Batman: Arkham Asylum there is no shortage of great enemies, and
they all have a strong A.I. systems behind them to make fighting them even more
interesting. Although there isn't a terrible amount of variety in the enemies
in terms of different types, within each type there are quite a few different
appearances and variations.
In this chapter I will basically list out all the different baddies in the game
and explain them to you. I'll give you strategies and hints to take them down,
and also give each enemy a difficulty rating as to how easy it is to defeat it.
Come back in the future for more as I'll add more enemy types when I find them
during my second playthrough. The last part of this chapter contains detailed
analysis and strategies on all the bosses in the game.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
 (b) The Enemies
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
For each enemy type I'll give you a few different kinds of information:
WEAPONS are the different types of weapons these enemies might wield
INFO is where I tell you about the enemy and give you tips on beating them
DIFFICULTY is where I rate the enemy out of 10.
***********
THUG INMATE
***********
WEAPONS: Unarmed, Lead Pipes, Metal Bars
INFO: These are the most common types of enemies in the game. They are all
'prisoners' in the Arkham Asylum, released by Joker and Harley Quinn. They all
know about Batman and hates him, so all of them will be looking forward to take
you down. All of these are basic thugs, ordered and released by Joker to keep
an eye out for you.
Fighting each of them is a simple affair, as most of them come unarmed. It only
takes a few strikes to take one out, but the unfortunate thing is that they
always come in groups. The least amount to appear is two, and they can be wait-
ing around in a group with as many thugs as ten. Thankfully it's incredibly
satisfying take on big numbers of these Thug Inmates, as they usually hesitate
and stand around a lot (scared of the Batman, obviously).
My tips for you are to keep bashing them with (X) and make sure you point {L}
in the right direction to keep your combo going, while making sure they don't
get a chance to fight you. A few thugs will be quick enough to strike at you,
but simply press (Y) to counter their attacks when they do. If the odds are
greater than 5, you might want to use (B) to stun a few of them. Later on some
of them wield lead pipes and metal bars, and these can hurt quite bad if you
don't counter the strikes. You should aim to take these pipe-wielding thugs
first.
Aside from times you're outnumbered greatly, they shouldn't prove to be too
much of a problem.
DIFFICULTY: 1/10 (Alone), 3/10 (In a group of 3-5), 5/10 (In a group of 6 or
            more)
**************
BLACKGATE THUG
**************
WEAPONS: Unarmed, Lead Pipes
INFO: Very similar to the thug inmates, these guys are a little stronger as
they are Joker's henchmen. You can see this from their appearances as they have
painted their faces into a clown-like look.
Aside from having a little more health and being more agressive, these thugs
from Blackgate Correctional Facility aren't much more difficult to beat than
the standard thug inmates. Use the same tactics- strike them continuously and
cape stun those that wield weapons.
These enemies appear later on in the game, and replace all the regular thugs.
DIFFICULTY: 2/10 (Alone), 4/10 (In a group of 3-5), 6/10 (In a group of 6 or
            more)
**********
ARMED THUG
**********
WEAPONS: Assault Rifle, Shotgun
INFO: Extremely dangerous enemies. These dudes are either inmates that Joker
has ordered to find weapons around the asylum or his personal Blackgate Thugs
wielding guns. Both variations are the same, except inmates look like normal
thugs and Joker's Blackgate Thugs have clown paint jobs on their faces.
Each one of these Armed Thugs wield either an assault rifle or a shotgun, maki-
ng it extremely dangerous for Batman to engage them head-on. This means during
encounters with these guys, it's best to use the invisible predator element of
the game- in other words, stealth. Usually you'll find that you're able to use
[R] to sneak behind them and then use (Y) to deliver a silent takedown. At
other times you'll find yourself in large rooms where you need to slowly pick
them off one by one.
In these situations you'll almost always have gargoyles to help you with. You
can grappel up to the gargoyles and use them as vantage points to scan over
your enemies and study their behavior. It especially helps to use detective
mode to locate all of them and study how scared they are of you, and what weap-
ons they are wielding. If they are wielding assault rifles, you'll have to be
careful of them at all times as they'll be able to shoot at you from pretty
far. As for the ones with shotguns you can still escape from afar if they spot
you, as they'll have less aim. But close up, they deal a lot more damage and
can be very dangerous.
If you're able to use stealth, set traps, and take them down silently, these
enemies will be quite easy to defeat. If you do need to engage one or two face
on, however, they are one of the most deadly enemies in the game as Batman is
human and can only take a certain number of bullets with his armor. If you do
get caught it's a good idea to use the gargoyles to escape quickly, and replan
your strategies.
DIFFICULTY: 6.5/10 (Assualt Rifle), 7/10 (Shotgun)
***********************
HIGH SECURITY PRISONERS
***********************
WEAPONS: Twin Daggers
INFORMATION: Although these enemies are still unarmed, their twin daggers can
deal as much damage as a burst of assault rifle fire per slash. It is wise to
be prepared to fight these enemies then, and there are a few simple tactics to
make taking on them much easier. They wear a weird type of metallic head gear
and red overalls.
When they attack you may notice the red lighting marks that appear above their
heads as opposed to blue ones. This means that their attacks cannot be counter-
ed no matter what. The only way to avoid these attacks are to run away, perform
a redirect move on the High Security Prisoner, or evade (dive) away. This links
into one of the tactics to taking them out. You need tactics because not only
can you not counter their attacks, but they can block your strikes with their
blades.
One way to deal with these High Security Prisoners are to use the redirect move
and attack them from behind. Press (A) twice and point {L} towards them to use
the redirect move, which results in you leaping over him, and from there you
can just beat him up. The most effective and quick way to deal with them though
is to stun them with (B) first, then start striking them. If they fall to the
ground try and quickly perform a ground takedown or they will be coming back up
a few times.
Speaking of which they come up after you knock them down quite a couple of
times because they have more health than other regular thugs. This also means
that using an instant takedown on them will be your best choice when fighting
with a group of enemies, as you'll take them out regardless of their health
level.
I believe these enemies are not that difficult to deal with, but do present a
bit of a challenge in group fights where attacks are coming in from all direct-
ions. At least they mix the combat up even more and makes things more interest-
ing.
DIFFICULTY: 6/10 (Alone), 8/10 (Mixed in a group)
 (c) Closing Words
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
The guide is starting to look the part, with quite a few completed chapters
and I've finally started some of the later chapters. Updates will be coming
very soon, and I will be finished with the entire main story walkthrough within
the month of September. Thanks for being patient guys.
