Please bear in mind that this is my first guide. Yeah, I'm starting with an achievement FAQ. Is that a weird way to start or am I just being paranoid? Anyway, let's get on to it... --------------------------- Table of Contents --------------------------- 1. Before We Enter The Darkness.......................................... [LGIN] ================================================================================ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Before We Enter The Darkness [BFRW] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================================ This section will give a detailed description of how to use this guide effectively. It's in no way mandatory that you read this section but it will help you out if collecting all the achievements is your primary goal. I also want to stress that this guide doesn't belong to just me. It belongs to everyone that has decided to help along the way. That being said, please point out any mistakes, shortcuts or anything else that I have missed. This way we can reduce the amount of problems that others may face. It's all about helping one another! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Terms to Know [TMTK] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Along the way there may be some words, phrases, etc. that others are not used to. I decided to add this section so that it's easier for people to understand the words used by the creators of this game for items such as manuscript pages, weapons, items, enemies, etc. I might also describe actions/techniques that you may need to perform using a certain abbreviation or word. This way we can get through the guide faster without needing an extremely large description for every little thing. For example, I might say, 'Quickly CD toward the switch' which means to cinematic dodge. Pistol / Handgun - I might sometimes refer to something else besides the revolver. Sorry, I'm not a gun aficionado so I can't always remember the correct term for this gun. PAS - Pump-Action Shotgun. CD - Cinematic Dodge. Just makes my life easier if I say it like this. Charge - Using the 'Y' button, put a new battery in. Boost - Using the Left Trigger to focus your flashlight on an area or enemy. Taken - The regular enemies you see all the time. Easier if I just use 'Taken' then a specific enemy name. Besides that I'll specify something like a chainsaw Taken or the speed Taken. Crows - Just the regular bird enemies. Yeah, I know they're Ravens but I tend to forget that sometimes. LST - Light-Sensitive Text. These are the messages that are only revealed when you shine your flashlight on them. HDLantern - Heavy-Duty Lantern. HDFlashlight - Heavy Duty Flashlight. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ratings [RTNG] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I decided to rate the achievements along the way in order to let you, the reader, know what you're in store for. Some achievements may be extremely hard while others require you to just walk forward (well, not that easy but you get the point). This way you can plan ahead and decide which achievements you may want to do first. The ratings will be done in the following format: ----------------------------------- Sample Achievement (1) [ROFL] (2) Rating: *** (3) Length: Around 20 minutes. (4) Gain: 20GP (5) Description: Complete a guide for Alan Wake (6) ----------------------------------- (1) The name of the achievement. (2) The achievement code for easy access (using CTRL + F) (3) The rating of the achievement out of 5 stars. 1 star being extremely easy and 5 stars being quite hard. (4) Estimated time as to how long it might take you. Yes, I timed all of the achievements myself. (5) How many Gamer Points you will receive for completing this achievement. (6) The given description of the achievement. If you have any concerns about the layout or you'd like more information than what I have decided to provide, you can always contact me and we'll work something out. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Links [LNKS] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anything else that I do not cover in this guide can be found at the following links: http://www.gamefaqs.com/xbox360/928006-alan-wake/faqs (Alan Wake FAQs section) http://www.gamefaqs.com/xbox360/928006-alan-wake/answers (Alan Wake Q&A section) http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/928006-alan-wake (Alan Wake Boards) Please try to use these sources before contacting me. Use them effectively. ================================================================================ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Achievement Guide [ACGD] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================================ *Achievements are currently listed in alphabetical order. ----------------------------------- Alan, Wake Up [ACH1] Rating: ***** Length: Depends. Estimated playthrough for my game: 8 hours Gain: 50GP Description: Complete the game on Nightmare difficulty. ----------------------------------- Probably the hardest achievement in this game. In order to complete this achievement, you'll need to prepare for your Nightmare run of the game. I'll cover all three points in order to beat this mode. The first change in Nightmare mode is the enemies. Regularly, the normal Taken take 1-2 shots to kill. In Nightmare mode you may end up firing 4-5 shots with your pistol before taking a regular Taken down. On top of that, there are the chainsaw Taken and speed Taken. Chainsaw Taken could take up to 20 pistol shots before dying. As for the speed Taken, you'll be trying to chase them down a lot. What I do is tap the left trigger in order to get the flashlight to follow the speed Taken around. This way you can get the enemy to flinch much faster than waiting for them. For Nightmare mode, I'd recommend only fighting enemies when absolutely necessary. Sometimes it's better to just run away then take your chances. This brings us to our second change. Your health will be significantly lower this time around and you'll have to run away like a wuss. This is where flashbangs and flares come in handy. Once you see a group of enemies coming close to you (the point you can see them on the screen while running away) go ahead and hit the right bumper and then continue running like mad. This way you'll gain the speed advantage once more. Also make sure you dodge when appropriate. Usually, when you can see the enemy start to lunge, dodge. As for the third difference, the inclusion of Nightmare Manuscript pages requires you to search out each episode much more. If you want to collect the Manuscript pages at the same time as completing the Nightmare mode achievement, it's going to take you a lot longer to complete. Yet, you are killing 2 birds with one stone. Go for it if you think you can handle the enemies. *Note that you have to complete either Normal or Hard mode in order to play Nightmare mode. ----------------------------------- An Idyllic Small Town [ACH2] Rating: *** Length: 25-30 minutes. Gain: 30GP Description: Make it through "Night Falls in Bright Falls" in one go without dying or restarting even once. ----------------------------------- Not too hard. Not very demanding either. I'd recommend doing this achievement on Normal mode so you don't end up getting killed making a small mistake. All you need to do is keep yourself in corners when you're forced to fighting enemies. If you end up being attacked by the Taken while in a forested area, run toward the nearest checkpoint. If the enemies get too close, use flashbangs and flares in order to get them away from you and give you the speed advantage. If you need further tips on this section, see the achievement, 'Alan, Wake Up'. ----------------------------------- Back! Back, I Say! [ACH3] Rating: * Length: 1-5 minutes. Gain: 10GP Description: Save yourself with a flare. ----------------------------------- This is one of those achievements you'll definitely get naturally. When you are surrounded by Taken that are extremely close and you are in some sort of danger, use a flare by pressing the right bumper. Make sure you have a flare equipped and not a flashbang. I'd recommend doing this at a checkpoint or at the beginning of a level where flares are left in supply boxes. Finding an LST path and then following the text to a secret box can also get you a few flares. Like I said, shouldn't need much explanation. ----------------------------------- Boob Tube [ACH4] Rating: * Length: 5-10 minutes. Gain: 5GP Description: See what's on TV. ----------------------------------- This achievement can be obtained in episode 4. Right after a cutscene featuring Dr. Hartman being dragged off by the darkness, you will have to escape the medical facility. At one point, you will reach a room with a TV mounted to the wall. All you need to do is walk up to it and press the action button (B) and watch the advertisement. Achievement for watching an ad? Eh, why not. ----------------------------------- Bright Falls Aficionado [ACH5] Rating: **** Length: Depends. Could take up to 4 hours. Gain: 5GP Description: Absorb every bit of local history and culture. ----------------------------------- This achievement could be demanding at times. You need to read every sign that has to do with Bright Falls. The ones you should be on the lookout for have to do with the annual Deer Fest. Once you get to the mine, there are quite a few as well. It shouldn't be too hard finding these signs. It's just getting to their locations might be a bit difficult as they could sometimes be found in the middle of an episode. ----------------------------------- Bright Falls' Finest [ACH6] Rating: * Length: 1 hour and up. Gain: 20GP Description: Call for help. ----------------------------------- This is an automatic achievement. Once you reach a certain point in the game, you will have to make a phone call in order to call for help and progress through the game. Once you do this, you'll automatically receive this achievement. ----------------------------------- Carny [ACH7] Rating: *** Length: 2-3 hours. Gain: 10GP Description: Knock over five can pyramids. ----------------------------------- The only reason I labeled this at 2-3 hours is because at times, it could take a while to get to the specified pyramid of cans. Anyway, all you need to do is knock down the pyramid by shooting it. There are two pyramids of cans in each episode and I will outline where each of them are located: Episode 1 1. Along the path is a dumpster full of pistol ammo. If you look toward the fence, the pyramid can be seen sitting on it. 2. Once you get to the lumber yard, you should be able to find a broken staircase. The pyramid is right next to it. Episode 2 1. At the mill near the river should be a barrel. The pyramid should be sitting on it. 2. Once you get to the visitor center, there should be a picnic table in the corner of the space of land. The pyramid is sitting on the table. Episode 3 1. Once you get to the barn, there should be a shed with a truck. If you check the truck, the pyramid can is sitting right on top of it. 2. Once you get out of the mine, you should be able to see a cable car platform. The pyramid is sitting right on the platform. Episode 4 1. Once you get out of the facility and into the gardens, start to search the outer wall. The pyramid should be sitting atop. 2. Once you see the silo, walk around it until you find the pyramid can. Episode 5 1. Once you're on harbor street, look for the hotdog stand. It should be right in front of the Auto Supplies shop. 2. Once you get to the power plant and you have to use the kill switch, look along the wall for the pyramid can. Episode 6 1. Once you get to the Majestic Motel, search the walls of the parking lot. The pyramid can is sitting on it. 2. In the scrap yard, there should be an office near the front gate. Check the desk for the pyramid can. ----------------------------------- Child of the Elder God [ACH8] Rating: ** Length: 1 hour. Gain: 10GP Description: Have a rock'n'roll moment without dropping to a low health state. ----------------------------------- Definitely my favorite achievement. Once you get to the Anderson's farm in episode 4, you and Barry will move up to the stage that the brothers used to use for shows. As Barry controls the lights, you'll have to fight off swarms of Taken. All you need to do is fight them off without going into the black and white health state. It shouldn't be too hard to accomplish. Just make sure you pick up the lantern before fighting off the enemies. Also remember to replenish your health using the lamp post toward the middle of the stage. Barry will turn it on at specific times during the swarm. ----------------------------------- Collateral Carnage [ACH9] Rating: ** Length: Depends. Could take up to an hour. Read guide. Gain: 20GP Description: Defeat 20 Taken with indirect means. ----------------------------------- This isn't too hard. There are a few ways you can kill the Taken without using your regular weapons. In some areas, you can find gasoline canisters. Just shoot it a couple of times and it will explode. Just gather a few enemies and shoot at the canister to kill multiple enemies in an 'indirect' way. The best way to complete this would be in the abandoned train yard where your primary goal is to turn off the power. There are multiple canisters and enemies around which gives you many chances to kill multiple enemies at the same time. Other ways involve pushing enemies into live electrical wires. There are tons of these around the game and require you to focus your flashlight onto an enemy, forcing them to move back toward a live wire. Some stronger enemies can be pushed back by firing a gun at them while they are still protected by the darkness. You could end up getting this achievement naturally while completing the game. That could either take an upward of 1 hour or a concentrated achievement run of 30 minutes. A great video guide for this achievement can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tx6DlD0Tr18 ----------------------------------- Collector's Edition [AC10] Rating: *** Length: 4 hours and up Gain: 50GP Description: Find all of the manuscript pages in the game, including the ones in Nightmare mode. ----------------------------------- If you've played games before, you know there's bound to be collectables. But these collectables are rather important to the story and show a wider view of the Alan Wake world. Manuscript pages are usually found right on the path you use to get through the game. So it's not like they're extremely hard to find or hidden out of place (But thermoses are >_>). So anyway, Gamefaqs member, Daicen has created a great guide on how to find the Manuscript Pages. This guide can be found here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/xbox360/928006-alan-wake/faqs/60105 ----------------------------------- Come One, Come All [AC11] Rating: ** Length: 10 minutes. Gain: 10GP Description: Kill four Taken with a single shot from the flare gun. ----------------------------------- Not too hard. Just gathering the enemies might cause you a little trouble. I'd recommend finding a few enemies (obviously, 4) in a forested area. Then corner yourself and use flares and your flashlight to make sure all the Taken are suppressed a bit. Wait for the Taken to get a little closer. You should be able to figure out how much your flare gun spans (if you don't, practice a few shots on single and double enemies). Once you think you have the shot, go ahead and fire. The flare gun has a decent amount of range so it should affectively hit all of them in one go. If it doesn't work the first time, practice gathering enemies and using your shotgun to measure it out without wasting flare gun shots. ----------------------------------- Couch Potato [AC12] Rating: *** Length: 4-5 hours. Gain: 30GP Description: Watch every single TV show. ----------------------------------- Not too hard. It will take some time to complete though. The following is a list of every TV show in the order they appear: Waking up to a Nightmare 1. Inside the gate control room. 2. Inside the car at the gas station. Bright Falls Sheriff Station 1. As you're leaving the jail cell area, a TV will automatically turn on overhead. Elderwood National Park 1. There will be a cabin that can be opened by kicking the door down. The TV is right inside the cabin. 2. Right when you get the garage key, turn around to find another TV. On the Run 1. As soon as you wake up the TV will be in the same room. 2. Inside the train depot on the top floor. Mirror Peak 1. The TV should be inside the locked building. (A key is required as part of your objective. It is on a dumpster in a broken down cabin) Cauldron Lake Lodge 1. As you head back to your room, you should be a car with the TV inside. 2. You should be running away from the darkness when you come across this one. You should have enough time to turn it on and watch what's on without anything happening to you. The Anderson Farm 1. Once you find the room with the drunk guy (top floor) turn around to find a TV on a desk. 2. Once you get to the barn, there should be a TV on a shelf. Barry mentions that it's the show, 'Nightspring Falls'. Night Falls in Bright Falls 1. Top floor of the mayor's office. Bright Falls Light & Power 1. Same location as the one in 'Night Falls in Bright Falls'. *There's also one last automatic TV that doesn't require searching. ----------------------------------- Damn Good Cup of Coffee [AC13] Rating: ** Length: 1-2 hours. Gain: 20GP Description: Discover 25 coffee thermoses. ----------------------------------- Searching for thermoses isn't too much harder than finding manuscript pages. But these aren't in plain sight like the manuscript pages. Currently, Gamefaqs does not have a coffee thermos guide. There is a guide here that is quite useful though: http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2010/05/17/alan-wake-coffee-thermoses- locations-guide-xbox-360.htm ----------------------------------- Departure [AC14] Rating: **** Length: 4-5 hours. Gain: 40GP Description: Complete the game on Normal difficulty. ----------------------------------- Probably the first mode you should complete just so you're not swarmed by tough enemies. You'll also have better chances collecting other things like manuscript pages and coffee thermoses. If you need help on obtaining this achievement, you can check one of the Walkthroughs available for this game: By dontyoulookatme: http://www.gamefaqs.com/xbox360/928006-alan-wake/faqs/60038 By: IceQueenZer0 http://www.gamefaqs.com/xbox360/928006-alan-wake/faqs/59980 ----------------------------------- Drink 'Em Both Up [AC15] Rating: * Length: 2 minutes. Gain: 10GP Description: Put de lime in de coconut twice. ----------------------------------- When I first saw the description of this achievement, I knew what had to be done. When you first start the game and head into the diner, you will see the Andersons sitting down. One of them asks you to turn on the record player. Once you walk up to it, you will have to press A repeatedly in order to get it to start working. Once it works, one of them will thank you. Later in the game, you will be with Sarah heading down Main Street. After going a long way down the road, you'll reach the diner once more. Go inside and head toward the record player. Hit B and you will turn on the record player. The same song will be playing again and you will get the achievement. ----------------------------------- Energized! [AC16] Rating: ** Length: 2-3 hours. Gain: 10GP Description: Use 100 batteries. ----------------------------------- Another achievement that you will most likely get naturally. If not, you can keep playing Episode 1 over and over again until you do eventually get it. (Batteries are most common in the first episode as they assume you'll still be getting used to conserving them.) I think I ended up getting this achievement naturally a little way through my third playthrough. If you plan to play this game a lot, there's no doubt it'll eventually end up completed on your list. ----------------------------------- Every Nook and Cranny [AC17] Rating: *** Length: 1 hour. Gain: 30GP Description: Discover all of the hidden chests. ----------------------------------- I found this achievement rather annoying. I hate getting attacked right when I start taking stuff out of the boxes. I'm not sure, maybe it's just me. So you can consider this two starts instead. So hidden chests are always found under a glowing flare symbol that is light sensitive. You'll usually notice LST point you in the direction of a box so that much is easy. Until I write my own guide for this section, I'd recommend using the same guide that I did back when I was still trying to get all of the achievements. The guide can be found here: http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2010/05/17/alan-wake-hidden-chests-locations- guide-xbox-360.htm ----------------------------------- Finders Keepers [AC18] Rating: * Length: 10 minutes - 1 hour. Gain: 20GP Description: Discover 5 hidden chests. ----------------------------------- Very easy. You will most definitely get this naturally. If not, check the above achievement for a guide on collecting the hidden chests. ----------------------------------- Float Like a Butterfly [AC19] Rating: * Length: 1 minute. Gain: 15GP Description: Perform a cinematic dodge. ----------------------------------- You will get this achievement most likely at the beginning of the game. Once you enter the tutorial, a cinematic dodge is explained and you are asked to dodge. At this time you will most likely CD rather than a normal dodge. ----------------------------------- Follow the Light [AC20] Rating: * Length: 10 minutes. Gain: 10GP Description: Take a night course of light education. ----------------------------------- Very easy. Just completely the tutorial at the very beginning of the game. It won't take you more than 10 minutes. Another natural achievement. ----------------------------------- Gatekeeper [AC21] Rating: * Length: 20 minutes. Gain: 10GP Description: Cut the power to the transformer yard. ----------------------------------- Fairly easy. Once you get to episode 5, there will be a section where you are told to go cut the power to the transformer yard. Walk outside and toward the gate on your right. Open it and turn right at your first chance. Walk straight until you are shown an overview of the generator. This is when you are given a choice to play around with the gate switches. Don't bother as the first gate is already closed and you can easily walk across it. Pull the switches to make it across to the third section and then finally cut the power using the generator. You will get the achievement soon after. ----------------------------------- Gunless Wonder [AC22] Rating: **** Length: 1 hour. Gain: 10GP Description: Make it to Cauldron Lake without firing a single shot in "On the Road to Cauldron Lake." ----------------------------------- I found this quite hard. When you get attacked, you always have the urge to fire a shot. Instead of using your guns to fight back, just keep throwing flashbangs and flares when you're in trouble. You also have your flashlight with you and tons of other ways to defeat enemies like running them over with a car. Remember that it's only the section, "On the Road to Cauldron Lake" and if you do make a mistake, you can always go back to the previous checkpoint and continue. Stray bullets do count and the flare gun counts as well. People usually forget that the flare gun does count in this achievement. ----------------------------------- Hardboiled Writer [AC23] Rating: **** Length: 5-6 hours. Gain: 40GP Description: Complete the game on Hard difficulty. ----------------------------------- Hard mode isn't too bad. It does get a little annoying though. You may end up dying 2-3 times before completing a particularly hard part and enemies are a bit stronger. Besides that, you shouldn't have too much trouble. I'd recommend thinking about what you should do before firing away. If you're swarmed by more than 4 enemies, it would be better for you to just run away rather than take your chances. Pistol ammo is still very abundant so take advantage of that. Also remember that the flare gun is going to be one of your best weapons. A shot from that can easily take out a big swarm if you aim correctly. If you need any more advice, I'd recommend checking [ACH1]. ----------------------------------- Heavy Metal [AC24] Rating: ** Length: 10 minutes. Gain: 10GP Description: Survive the bulldozer attack. ----------------------------------- In the middle of episode 3, you are going to end up being attacked by a bulldozer. In order to complete this, you are going to have to defeat it rather than run away. Once you reach a closed off area, a mini cutscene will show the bulldozer move toward the wall and break it down. Start shining your flashlight on the bulldozer getting it's circle down while dodging nearby enemies. You may want to use a flashbang or flare in order to buy you some time and get rid of the bulldozer. Once you do take it out, you will be rewarded with this achievement. ----------------------------------- Hypercaffeinated [AC25] Rating: **** Length: 4-5 hours. Gain: 30GP Description: Discover all coffee thermoses. ----------------------------------- At one point, you are going to end up doing a concentrated search for these. So I wouldn't worry about finding them while trying to beat the game. The coffee thermoses are not out in the open like Manuscript Pages so you are going to end up searching a lot for these. Currently, Gamefaqs does not have a coffee thermos guide. There is a guide here that is quite useful though: http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2010/05/17/alan-wake-coffee-thermoses- locations-guide-xbox-360.htm ----------------------------------- If It Flies, It Burns [AC26] Rating: ** Length: 20 minutes. Gain: 30GP Description: Burn 1,000 birds. ----------------------------------- This could be done in almost no time at all. Once you reach a swarm of crows, have your flare gun ready. Fire toward the swarm taking out all of the birds at once. This is the only practical way to do it as using your flashlight or your gun would take forever. If you are not sure how many birds you have killed, you can check in the start menu when in-game. ----------------------------------- Iron Horse [AC27] Rating: * Length: 10 minutes. Gain: 10GP Description: Encounter a steam engine. ----------------------------------- For this achievement, you're going to have to defeat the steam engine in the middle of episode 3. Once you reach the train tracks with a steam engine sitting on them, run toward the tree and the old canister and watch the steam engine come alive like other haunted objects do. While hiding behind the tree, shine your flashlight toward the steam engine until it's defeated. The tree in the way will block the engine from ever hitting you. Once it's defeated, you will get the achievement. ----------------------------------- It's Not Just a Typewriter Brand [AC28] Rating: ** Length: 1-2 hours. Gain: 20GP Description: Defeat 50 Taken with a shotgun. ----------------------------------- If anything, this will be another natural achievement. Throughout the game you are given tons of shotgun ammo and a choice of either a regular shotgun or a pump-action shotgun. Don't bother conserving ammo as your ammo never passes over to the next episode. Go ahead and fire your PAS like mad when encountering enemies. But I'd only recommend doing that in Normal mode. It won't take long to get this achievement. I actually didn't realize it when I got it the first time around. ----------------------------------- KBF-FM [AC29] Rating: *** Length: 2-3 hours. Gain: 30GP Description: Listen to all of the radio shows. ----------------------------------- Another collection type achievement. This one was fun for me though as the radio shows are usually pretty funny/interesting and are found in areas without enemies. Anyway, here goes... Welcome to Bright Falls 1. Right on the back deck of your cabin. Waking Up To A Nightmare 1. After you move the lift, walk toward the broken stairs. The radio is sitting in the shed. Bright Falls Sheriff Station 1. Once you're able to go outside in the parking lot, look toward the loading dock to find the radio. Elderwood National Park 1. Inside one of the cabins that you eventually come across. Shouldn't be hard to find. On the Run 1. On your way back to the trailer park, you'll find the radio on a deck. 2. Once you reach a safe haven, look around for the radio near some flashbangs. Mirror Peak 1. Once you reach the broken bridge, go up the stairs to the right to find a building with the radio inside. 2. Inside the ranger tower. Cauldron Lake Lodge 1. Right when you enter the office, look toward your left to find the radio. The Anderson Farm 1. Once you get to the range tower, walk up to the top to find the radio. 2. Get through the silo and right before the last floor, search this floor for a radio. ----------------------------------- Let There Be Light [AC30] Rating: * Length: 30 seconds. Gain: 10GP Description: Get a generator running. ----------------------------------- Once you reach your cabin, you will have to get the generator running in the house. Simply go outside to the back and walk toward the old shed. Open the door and get the generator started by pressing A when the target reaches the green symbol. Easy enough. ----------------------------------- Medical Opinions [AC31] Rating: * Length: 5 minutes. Gain: 10GP Description: Listen to Hartman's recordings. ----------------------------------- This one gets a little boring. In episode 4, you will eventually reach Dr. Hartman's office which requires a key that should have been found earlier. On his desk is a recording of a conversation between Alice and himself. Press B on the recording and wait for it to finish. Press it again and wait for them to stop talking again. Press it one last time to get the achievement. ----------------------------------- Meet the Deadline [AC32] Rating: ** Length: 25 minutes. Gain: 30GP Description: In "Mirror Peak," make it from the Coal Mine Museum to Cauldron Lake in 30 minutes. ----------------------------------- This shouldn't be too hard. Just try to avoid encounters with enemies and get to your destination as fast as possible. When you do end up getting swarmed by enemies, use flashbangs to kill them all at once. This can be achieved easily as long as you don't waste time trying to look for ammo or fighting off enemies. ----------------------------------- Missed by a Mile [AC33] Rating: ** Length: 10 minutes. Gain: 25GP Description: Perform a cinematic dodge 20 times. ----------------------------------- This could be achieved naturally if you're a player that tends to dodge a lot of attacks. Otherwise, you can get this in a concentrated run in about 10 minutes. What I did was, I went to the tutorial level and continued to dodge enemies under I received the achievement. The enemies in normal mode on the tutorial level are extremely weak so you shouldn't have a problem defeating them if you miss too many dodges or get hit. ----------------------------------- Nordic Walking [AC34] Rating: * Length: 10 minutes. Gain: 10GP Description: Take a walk through the logging area, meet one of the quirky locals. ----------------------------------- You will get this automatically after defeating Stucky in the logging area of episode 1. Stucky will be extremely fast and in order to catch him, keep pressing the left trigger to get your flashlight to follow him. Once you finally get his focus circle down, just fire a few shots to defeat him. Soon after, you will get this achievement. ----------------------------------- Paging Mr. Wake [AC35] Rating: *** Length: 1-2 hours. Gain: 20GP Description: Find 25 manuscript pages. ----------------------------------- You will most likely get this achievement naturally if you pick up manuscript pages that are in plain sight. There are around 30 that require no searching whatsoever. If you completed your first run of the game and didn't get this achievement, you can try to work toward finding all of them in a concentrated manuscript running using the Manuscript Guide found on Gamefaqs. This guide can be found here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/xbox360/928006-alan-wake/faqs/60105 ----------------------------------- Park Ranger [AC36] Rating: ** Length: 1-2 hours. Gain: 15GP Description: Enjoy the sounds and sights of Elderwood National Park. ----------------------------------- You will get this automatically once you finish episode 2. ----------------------------------- Perchance to Dream [AC37] Rating: * Length: 10 minutes. Gain: 20GP Description: Take a moment to reflect on past events. ----------------------------------- You will get this after a lengthy cutscene explaining a lot of the back story to Alan Wake. ----------------------------------- Picking Up After Yourself [AC38] Rating: *** Length: 4-5 hours. Gain: 30GP Description: Find all of the manuscript pages in Normal mode. ----------------------------------- You're most definitely going to have to go through Normal mode more than once to get this achievement. I'd recommend doing a concentrated Manuscript run in order to get this achievement. Also use the Manuscript Guide found on GameFaqs. This guide can be found here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/xbox360/928006-alan-wake/faqs/60105 ----------------------------------- Right of Way [AC39] Rating: * Length: 15 minutes. Gain: 10GP Description: Drive over 15 Taken. ----------------------------------- Rather easy and super fun. Once you get a car, you can spend time finding Taken on the road and then filling their focus circle with your headlights. Then running them over with your car. If you do not fill their focus circle, they won't be killed and won't count toward the achievement. ----------------------------------- Sound and Fury [AC40] Rating: ** Length: 20 minutes. Gain: 10GP Description: Kill four Taken with a single flashbang. ----------------------------------- Not too hard. As soon as you get a flashbang, go into a forested area (enemies will always show up in groups of 4 while in forested areas). Get all of the enemies as close together as possible. What I did was first use a flare or your flashlight to get their focus circles down. Then when they try to run toward you all at once, go ahead and use your flashbang. I'd recommend running into a corner or a dead end so the Taken only have one place to come from. With a couple of tries, you should be able to get this done, no problem. ----------------------------------- Taken Season [AC41] Rating: *** Length: 1 hour. Gain: 20GP Description: Defeat 50 Taken with the hunting rifle. ----------------------------------- This was one of the last achievements I got. It's because people tend to conserve ammo for 'bosses' or a hard part. The thing is ammo is amazingly abundant in Normal and Hard modes. I would recommend just using you rifle normally. Don't bother conserving for 'something that may come up'. It's never going to happen. Go ahead and shoot those Taken like mad with the hunting rifle and you'll eventually get it. ----------------------------------- The Lady of the Light [AC42] Rating: * Length: 1-2 hours. Gain: 20GP Description: Discover the secret she guards. ----------------------------------- This is another automatic achievement. You get this right after you finish episode 5 and see the cutscene. ----------------------------------- The Six-Gun Scribe [AC43] Rating: * Length: 2-3 hours. Gain: 20GP Description: Defeat 100 Taken with the revolver. ----------------------------------- Pretty easy. Revolver ammo is EVERYWHERE and Taken are EVERWHERE. Put 2 and 2 together and you'll see how easy it is to get this achievement. I remember getting this a little way through episode 4. You shouldn't have any trouble with this. *Tip: If you want to concentrate this achievement, you could stick by a dumpster full of unlimited revolver ammo. Then walk into a forest, fight enemies and then head back to the dumpster over and over again. ----------------------------------- They're Heeeeeere! [AC44] Rating: * Length: 30 minutes. Gain: 20GP Description: Inanimate objects shouldn't move of their own accord. Put a stop to this affront, oh, say, 20 times. ----------------------------------- Super, super easy. There are a lot of sections in this game with inanimate objects that come alive. Most notable are a bridge in episode 4 and then again in episode 6. Both have around 10 objects so you'll definitely get this achievement before the end of your first run. ----------------------------------- Thunder and Lightning [AC45] Rating: ** Length: 2 hours. Gain: 20GP Description: Defeat 50 Taken with flashbang grenades. ----------------------------------- There aren't a lot of flashbangs in this game so getting this achievement may take a little more time. Maybe a second run? Anyway, finding some LST and then looking for the treasure boxes may get you a few extra flashbangs. What you could do is try to get a group of enemies together and then use a flashbang. Let's say you take out 2 Taken for each flashbang, you just cut your flashbang usage in half. See [AC40] for help on getting Taken together. ----------------------------------- Tornado Wrangler [AC46] Rating: *** Length: 2-3 hours. Gain: 20GP Description: Defeat the tornado. ----------------------------------- Getting to the tornado itself is harder than defeating it. Once you do eventually get to the tornado, it's simply using your flashlight and flare gun shots to weaken it. Watch out for the inanimate objects flying around as they can hit and hurt Alan pretty badly. What I did was launch as many flare gun rounds as I could and then quickly take out the stray objects coming towards me. Like I said, the tornado is really easy to defeat. It's getting there that's the problem. ----------------------------------- Two For the Price of One [AC47] Rating: * Length: 10 minutes. Gain: 10GP Description: Kill two Taken with a single shotgun blast. ----------------------------------- Not hard at all. All you do is get into a swarm of enemies. Get rid of all except two. This way you won't have any other distractions. Then complete the focus circle for the last two enemies. Run a couple of steps away (maybe get into a corner) and wait for them to line up (single file line). Then fire a shot. If one goes down, you'll have to try again. If both are still alive, you're in luck. The next shot will definitely kill both of them earning you the achievement. ----------------------------------- Under a Thin Layer of Skin [AC48] Rating: * Length: 10 minutes. Gain: 10GP Description: Defy the park ranger. ----------------------------------- Once you find Rusty as a Taken, you'll have to defeat him. Of course, he's one of the really fast ones so you're going to have to use the light trick again. Keep tapping the left trigger to follow him around the map. Then once he stops, concentrate your light for a few seconds and he'll be ready to kill. Once he's defeated, you'll earn the achievement. ----------------------------------- What Light Through Yonder Window [AC49] Rating: ** Length: 1-2 hours. Gain: 20GP Description: Defeat 50 Taken with the flare gun, the way Shakespeare intended. ----------------------------------- Not too hard. Just try to group enemies together as much as you can before trying to defeat them. I'd recommend using [AC10] in order to get help on this achievement. Like I've said for other multiple enemy achievements, it's better to save shots by grouping enemies. Then you don't have to waste time looking for ammo. ----------------------------------- Wheels Within Wheels [AC50] Rating: * Length: 1-2 hours. Gain: 20GP Description: Meet the kidnapper. ----------------------------------- Another automatic story achievement. You will get this after finishing episode 3 and watching the end cutscene. ================================================================================ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Frequently Asked Questions [FQSS] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================================ The following questions were either found on the Q&A section of GameFaqs or they were emailed to me recently. You can still submit a question by contacting me. Q: Is that the end of the game? Is there anything else next? A: Right now I'm not sure. All I know is that there's some DLC coming out June 28 which is supposed to continue the story. Q: I can't find 'insert manuscript page'. A: You're in luck. The member Daicen has written a guide on manuscript pages which can be found here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/xbox360/928006-alan- wake/faqs/60105 Q: I can't find 'insert coffee thermos here'. A: As of June 10, 2010 there is no Gamefaqs guide pertaining to the coffee thermoses. There is however a guide on Video Games Blog: http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2010/05/17/alan-wake-coffee-thermoses- locations-guide-xbox-360.htm Q: If I beat the game on Hard mode, will I get the achievements for both Normal and Hard modes? A: Yes you will. Actually, if you play Normal and then play Nightmare mode you can get both the Hard and Nightmare achievements. These are called stackable achievements and are found in other games as well. Q: I collected a bunch of manuscript pages in normal mode. If I start a new game on another mode, will by pages be transferred over? A: Sadly, no. The manuscript pages do not transfer over as Nightmare mode offers more pages than Normal and Hard. ================================================================================ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Version History [VRSN] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================================ Version 0.1 Description: Guide was started!
