To become a dark brotherhood member you need to go to windhelm and go to the inn and ask if the lady has heard any rumors or if you decide to do the other way find Aventus Aretino's house and talk to him ( Note: you will have to break in to the house ) when you talk to him he will think you are a dark brotherhood member. Go along with it. He will tell you a story and give a contract to kill Grelod the kind who runs a orphanage in Riften . After you kill Grelod return to Windhelm and talk again to Aventus and he'll pay you and so on. After you have done that wait for a few days and you will be approached by the courier who will say the same thing be he did not know who from. After that read the note and then go sleep for any amount of time.

Go to windhelm and a door will have a dark elf in front of it and go inside lockpick through and a boy will be performing a ritual a note will come shortly after then sleep.
