When I go to a chaple and try to use an alter it says, "repent your crimes vile one!" How do I repent my crimes?

Doing the pilgrimage, which is faster and easier especially if you have done it before(fast travel around the map), will instantly put your infamy to 0 and not only can you use shrines but if you have it you can once again wear the armor of the crusader.
